Stokely Carmichael was a prominent civil rights activist and leader known for his advocacy of Black Power and Black Pride in the 1960s. Originally a leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Carmichael became known for his powerful speeches and call for Black empowerment, shifting the movement toward self-determination and independence from white support structures. He coined the term Black Power during a 1966 march, inspiring pride and a stronger emphasis on Black identity, which resonated widely across the United States. Later, Carmichael joined the Black Panther Party and, eventually, moved to Guinea, where he continued his activism on a global scale under the name Kwame Ture. His legacy remains influential in discussions around racial justice and Black liberation.

“It is a call for black people in this country to unite, to recognize their heritage, to build a sense of community. It is a call for black people to define their own goals, to lead their own organizations.” Stokely Carmichael AKA Kwame Ture HATERS will say it’s photoshop!!! #MartinLutherKingJr, #StokelyCarmichael, #WillieMukasaRicks, and other activists walk together during the #MarchAgainstFear in 1966. The march was a major demonstration, originally launched by activist #JamesMeredith. Meredith started a solidarity walk from #Memphis TN, to #Jackson, MS. On the 2nd day, Meredith was shot by a white gunman & was hospitalized. Vowing to carry on the march, SNCC, the SCLC, the MFDP, CORE, among other groups converged. Black history, right here. Details and page spreads from 'Gordon Parks: Stokely Carmichael and Black Power,' published by @steidl @gordonparksfoundation & @mfahouston Gordon Parks’ 1967 @life magazine essay “Whip of Black Power” is a nuanced profile of the young, controversial civil rights leader Stokely Carmichael. As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Carmichael gained national attention and inspired media backlash when he issued the call for Black Power in Greenwood, Mississippi, in June 1966. Parks shadowed him from the fall of 1966 to the spring of 1967, as Carmichael gave speeches, headed meetings and promoted the growing Black Power movement. Parks’ photos and writing addressed Carmichael’s intelligence and humor, presenting the whole man behind the headline-making speeches and revealing his own advocacy of Black Power and its message of self-determination and love. 'Stokely Carmichael and Black Power' delves into Parks’ groundbreaking presentation of Carmichael, with analysis of his images and accompanying text about the charismatic leader. Lisa Volpe explores Parks’ complex understanding of the movement and its leader, and Cedric Johnson frames Black Power within the heightened political moment of the late 1960s. Carmichael’s own voice is represented through a reprint of his important 1966 essay “What We Want.” Read more via linkinbio. @lisamvolpe #gordonparks #stokelycarmichael #blackpower #blackhistory #whipofblackpower #whatwewant https://www.instagram.com/p/CoxNpuzuv1S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In honor of Kwame Ture (born Stokely Carmichael), we did something special over the weekend. In Conakry, The Kwame Ture Foundation decided to give Guinean girls black dolls at a school in The Ratoma neighborhood Kwame Ture used to live in. Kwame used to bring black dolls back to Guinea after his trips abroad and gift them to young black girls so that they would grow up understanding that “black is beautiful” and appreciate their own beauty. There were only white dolls accessible at the time and unfortunately even today black dolls are rarely found at the market in Guinea. For most girls it was their first doll ever and for others it was their first black doll. Representation is important. We also gifted the local kids some backpacks, toys and soccer balls. We plan to continue this activity. Stay tuned! ✊🏿 #kwameture #stokelycarmichael #momodione #momodionegoinghome #blackdolls #guinea #conakry #blackisbeautiful #ratoma #blackpower #organize #representationmatters (at Conakry, Guinea) https://www.instagram.com/p/Chb79-DNhYl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#GroupConciousness ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽 "The relative powerlessness and nature of Black consciousness as the reactionary product of White-Black power relations is operationally created through the sabotaging and manipulation of the fundaments of Black consciousness through their social and educational conditioning by Whites. Since the power of consciousness is related to its available fund and accuracy of knowledge, Whites have determined the strength and potential of Black consciousness by deliberately supplying it with operational non-knowledge or ignorance, inappropriate, inadequate, or otherwise faulty knowledge. The strength and behavioral character of Black Consciousness depends on its accurate perception of and its willingness to directly confront and come to terms with reality. Consequently, in order to weaken and misdirect Black consciousness, Whites through obscuring and misdefining reality, by associating it's discovery by Blacks with social rejection and with other forms of punitive and painful consequences, have induced in many Blacks a compelling need to also obscure and misdefine reality, to chronically seek to escape from it, and to accept the self-serving depiction of reality by Whites as valid." 🎬 via @blackdetour #DrAmosWilson #drclaudeanderson #MalcolmX #hueypnewton #fredhampton #stokelycarmichael #WhatisyourHistory #whatiscognativedissonance #whatisconformity #whatisselfhate #Amerikkkanhistoryx #Truthwaiversfornoman #SeekKnowledge #seektruth #DoResearch #AskQuestions #questioneverything #imwiththeshifts #RulesofRacism #HiddenColors #skyytribe #GCFC #godschosenfromcreation #youngblackandgold #WhatisPsychologicalWarfare (at Lubbock, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA8D2J2gx47/?igshid=1g47ukjqbngh1

“[Gordon] Parks was very aware that the vast majority of Life’s readership was white … But he understood that it was his voice that could humanize people like Stokely Carmichael, who had been shown in such a terrible, one-dimensional manner. He wanted to draw Stokely’s full character as a multidimensional person. And, in the end, you can see Parks really took in Black Power, interpreting it in his own way.” Read @theyxtabunny on 'Gordon Parks: Stokely Carmichael and Black Power' — with gorgeous exhibition catalog / monograph published by @steidlverlag @gordonparksfoundation & @mfahouston — in the new issue of @aperturefnd magazine via linkinbio. #stokelycarmichael #gordonparks #gordonparksstokelycarmichael #blackpower https://www.instagram.com/p/CoVfAheOPfD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
