a/n: i didn't have room to mention it but this was totally loki's fault btw (never trust a loki when there's mistletoe)

They’re like weeds, Steve thinks with an exasperated huff, seasonal parasites that apparently love to follow him wherever he goes; all day long, branches of mistletoe have appeared hanging from doorframes and lampshades and even one of the helicarriers. He’d normally blame Tony or Sam for this, because judging by their shit-eating grins they at least know something, but he’s gotten stuck with Pepper, too, which got him a holler—it was a kiss on the cheek, for crying out loud.

Anyway, the point is that this has been going on for hours and he’s starting to suspect that there’s something supernatural about this infestation and someone should look into this as soon as possible, actually, because there might be some nefarious intent behind it and—

"Steve, you’re stalling," you grin, your gaze flitting between his face and somewhere above his head where he knows, he knows there’s another one of the damn things but he doesn’t want to look up. The alternative, though, is continuing to stare at you, which doesn’t make things better at all and he should really stop doing that and get his shit together pronto and, god, is he blushing?

"We don’t," he starts and has to clear his throat immediately when you take a step closer, "we don’t have to if you don’t, uhm—"

Your hand comes up to his cheek and his voice gives out as you press your lips right next to the corner of his mouth, lingering just long enough for his mind to go blank; and so, when you move away from him again, he catches your chin between his fingers, your smile steady as his heartbeat rushes wildly in his ears, and then he leans in again.

Bucky was second in command for the Commandos therefore should've planned strategy with SSR as much as Steve. yet there's zero indication that the SSR personales knew Bucky well enough to even call him by his name??

Peggy has never addressed Bucky directly, even after his death Peggy used 'your friend' in her conversation with Steve. that's, if not avoidance out of jealousy of his relationship with Steve, detachment. there's no personal relationship between Bucky and her. plus Howard Stark calling him 'sergeant Barnes' which literally couldn't have been more impersonal.

the only logical conclusion is that the Commandos never spent time socializing with Peggy and Stark, they probably didn't even meet all that often cuz they were going around Europe fighting Hydra while SSR stayed behind doing their own stuff. Then how can Peggy possibly be the person Steve couldn't get over with, let along have any long lasting impact on him when they've barely spent time together?

popcorn movies are thoughtless and get criticized for this precise reason. the plot doesn't have to be properly developed bc audiences are conditioned to think certain ways and they complete the story in their head for the movie. 'oh that's a classic setup for romance, of course the hero falls in love with her.'

the thing is, it doesn't make sense, and when it doesn't, it shouldn't.

steggy is what happens when you let this thoughtlessness dictates how you percee a trope in a movie.

she never should've been the 'love of my life' for Steve. she simply couldn't have been. THEY BARELY KNEW EACH OTHER ffs.

I'm just thinking... Trans!Steve AU where the serum still made him stronger and gave him the muscles and stuff, but it didn't fix everything. Seemingly yes, but Erskine was the only one who knew about Steve being trans, and the doctors are curious and Stark has some wildly inappropriate questions but no one actually wants to check if the serum also increases dick size. (Steve wouldn't know. It didn't give him one)

(Cue some self doubt and insecurity and stuff, that Bucky definitely helps with after being rescued, IDK, this isn't why we're here)

Cue the twenty first century. Cue the Avengers. Cue a supervillain with a sex-changing magic ray. Tony is delighted. Thor is amused. Bruce is so confused and weirded out that most of his energy is put towards staying calm. Natasha doesn't seem to care at all. Clint makes a bet that he can walk in heels. (He can. He's frankly amazing.) And Steve...

Steve looks the same. No one understands why. The official theory is that he somehow managed to duck out of the way of the perfectly-aimed-hit-everyone-straight-on magic ray. Or that the decades old serum somehow made him immune to the fresh, modern supervillain invention.

But neither of these explanations are enough for Tony. He's hitting a wall with figuring out how to fix everyone else, so he wants to distract himself by figuring out why he doesn't have to fix Steve. He wants to dig deeper, he wants to study the serum even more than before, he wants blood tests, he wants to go crazy until he figures it out.

Steve... well he has time for it, the Avengers missions are put on pause until this mess is over, but he has neither the nerve nor the patience. Never has, never will.

Steve tells Tony that the magic ray gave him a dick (he keeps to himself how happy he feels about it, and how guilty this makes him feel, because this is not a good thing for anyone else). Tony is satisfied enough by this explanation and finally gets some sleep.

When he wakes up (after so many hours of sleep that Steve is beginning to worry he somehow slipped into coma) he offers Steve to finance a bottom surgery, after he solves the magic ray problem.

(Said problem figures itself out. The effects simply wear off. Tony is glad but also bitter. He decides this supervillain is now his nemesis - of the week at least.)

By the time he hangs up the call with Robin, Steve's not tired anymore. Grabbing a beer from the fridge, he heads towards the living room, pulling an extra chair next to the typewriter. The window is already closed back.

"How did that happen?"

No idea

Steve groans and chugs down half of his beer in one go. 

"I need to clue the nerds in," he sighs with resignation. "I really want to help you, you know?" he asks, head turning to pout at the typewriter. 

I know. Thank you

Steve slumps over the chair. 

"I wish I was doing a better job at it. Turns out I'm useless when there's nothing to punch," he murmurs. He looks over the many unpacked boxes stacked against the wall.

The keys click.

Well Im glad theres no monsters to punch

Steve smiles weakly.

"That's fair, yeah."

I wouldnt even hope to have a life again if you werent here. Give yourself some credit

Steve shrugs at that.

"I was just at the right time and right place."

And thats enough

"I guess," Steve hums, not convinced. He focuses back on the boxes. "I'm gonna look for the walkie. You," he taps against the table and points at the sheet of paper. "List any books or movies you want me to check out when I'm in town tomorrow."

Roger

He knows it should be somewhere in the top boxes. Well, the ones labeled as 'essentials' at least. But, apparently, Steve from a week before decided his hairspray and comb go into those. He sighs, putting them on the table. Next go actual essentials, like flashlights and candles in case his electricity wasn't cooperating. He finds what he's looking for in the second box and slams it on the center of the desk, so he doesn't forget to call the Party tomorrow. He's too tired to interact with them after the day he's had. 

He looks at the chair in front of the typewriter and for a moment he can almost feel a connection with someone else in the room, like their eyes have met despite the worlds separating them. He rounds the table to look at the list Eddie's made, which consists mostly of authors and bands he doesn't recognize but some of them he's herd of from his nerds. He taps the sheet sticking out of the machine. 

"Mike's been raving about a new Metallica tape for some time, I can probably find it for you. And I know for a fact there's a new edition of Dungeons and Dragons out."

The words are barely out of his mouth when the typewriter frantically comes to life. 

THERES A NEW EDITION OF DND I HAVE TO LEARN ? STEVE STEVE PLEASE I BEG YOI CAN YOU FIND IT FOR ME ? 

And Steve is a weak man, a people pleaser, as Robin calls him. He loves doing little things that will make his friends happy. 

"Yeah," he nods. "I'll look around."

Thnk you thank you thank you 

Steve laughs. 

"I haven't found it yet, It's a small town, don't expect too much," he says, knowing full well he'll drive to Indianapolis if he has to, just to find what Eddie needs. He's been stuck with the same books for ten years, it's normal that Steve wants to help. Somehow, he's already put him in the same box his other friends are: nerdy, lost, in need of help or protection. Just his type. 

He hopes it doesn't change when they actually meet.
