almost 5 years in Steve is as enamoured with rambling/worried Danny as ever. Danny is too busy ranting to get the memo.

Maybe I'm just too tired to keep runnin'
Maybe you're what I never saw comin'
Maybe I'm just too tired to keep lying
Maybe you're all I ever wanted
Am I in your head
Half as often as you're on my mind?

here for you
The sun was setting over the picturesque beaches of Oahu, casting a warm glow over the island. Steve McGarrett, head of the Five-0 Task Force, had just wrapped up a long day. He was looking forward to a quiet evening with Y/N, his girlfriend. She worked for a secret government agency, and their relationship was often punctuated by periods of absence and secrecy, but they made it work.
As Steve poured himself a drink, his phone buzzed. It was Y/N. Smiling, he answered, "Hey, you. How's it going?"
There was a pause, and then he heard her voice, tense and hurried. "Steve, I don't have much time. I've been compromised. I have to go under. I just wanted to tell you that I love you."
His heart skipped a beat. "What? Y/N, what are you talking about? Where are you?"
"I can't say. It's too dangerous. Just... trust me. I’ll contact you when it’s safe."
"Y/N, wait!" But the line went dead.
Steve stood frozen for a moment, the gravity of the situation sinking in. Y/N was in danger, and he needed to find her. Without wasting a second, he called his team.
Within minutes, Danny Williams, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, and Jerry Ortega assembled at headquarters. Steve briefed them on the situation.
"Y/N's been compromised and has gone under. We need to find her. Start pulling every contact, every lead. We don’t have much time."
The team sprang into action. Danny reached out to his contacts within law enforcement, while Chin and Kono scoured surveillance footage from various parts of the island. Jerry used his tech expertise to trace Y/N's last known locations and digital footprints.
Hours turned into a day, and the team worked tirelessly, driven by Steve's determination. They finally caught a break when Jerry intercepted a communication indicating that Y/N might be held in a storage unit on the outskirts of Honolulu.
Steve led the charge, with Danny, Chin, and Kono flanking him. They arrived at the storage facility, the place eerily quiet. Moving cautiously, they approached the designated unit. Steve's heart pounded in his chest as he forced the lock open.
Inside, they found Y/N, bound and bruised, but alive. Relief washed over Steve as he rushed to her side, carefully untying her restraints.
Just as Steve was about to lift her to her feet, a shadow moved in the corner of the unit. Steve barely had time to react before a burly man lunged at him. The kidnapper had been waiting, anticipating a rescue attempt.
Steve managed to sidestep the initial attack, but the kidnapper was strong and determined. They grappled, fists flying and grunts filling the air. Steve landed a solid punch to the man's jaw, but the kidnapper countered with a blow to Steve's midsection that knocked the wind out of him.
Y/N, though weak and still recovering from her ordeal, wasn't about to let Steve fight alone. She grabbed a metal rod from the floor and, summoning her remaining strength, swung it at the kidnapper's legs. The man stumbled, giving Steve the opening he needed.
With a swift and powerful move, Steve disarmed the kidnapper and subdued him, pinning him to the ground. Breathing heavily, he looked over at Y/N, who was leaning against the wall, exhausted but determined.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.
She nodded, managing a weak smile. "I am now."
Back at the Five-0 headquarters, Y/N received medical attention. Steve never left her side, his worry gradually easing now that she was safe. The team debriefed, planning their next moves to neutralize the threat that had endangered Y/N.
Later, as the night settled in, Steve and Y/N sat on the balcony of his house, overlooking the ocean. The ordeal had taken its toll, but they were together.
"Y/N," Steve began, breaking the comfortable silence. "I want you to join Five-0. I can't go through something like this again, not knowing where you are or if you're safe. I want you closer to me, where I can protect you."
She looked at him, seeing the earnestness in his eyes. "Steve, I don't know..."
"You'd be an incredible asset to the team. We could use someone with your skills. And more importantly, I need you here, with me."
Y/N smiled, a mix of exhaustion and affection in her eyes. "Alright, Steve. I'll join Five-0."
He pulled her into a tight embrace, the fear and worry of the past days melting away. They had faced danger and uncertainty, but in the end, their bond had only grown stronger. Together, they were ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.

A little McGarrett imagine bc that one scene in ep 8.6 makes me giggle every time…
—————
“So, uh,” Steve starts, reaching around you to snag a grape off of the bunch you’re running under the water, “I had a visitor at work today. Well, a shadow, really.”
You pop a grape into your mouth and busy yourself with chewing, managing to get out a, “Mm?”
“Yeah,” Steve affirms your understated question, wrapping his arms around your waist and resting his chin against your shoulder. His hulking form dwarfs yours and you instantly melt into his chest. “A stress management consultant,” he clarifies further. “Evidently our friends think I’m gonna stress myself to death.”
You level him with a glare before returning your attention to the fruit, shuffling your connected bodies to the cabinets and pulling down a bowl before tossing them in. “Not funny, Steven. They’re right to be worried.”
“I knew you were in on it,” he murmurs into your neck, pressing gentle kisses along your rapidly heating skin.
With a hum, you respond, “I plead the fifth, Commander.” You hold a grape up over your shoulder and feel Steve’s lips draw it from your grip.
“She actually gave me some great info,” he admits after chewing and swallowing your offer. His hands shift to your hips and slip between the fabric of your T-shirt and shorts, his fingers kneading random patterns into your skin.
Distracted by his touch, you let your head fall back against his shoulder and entertain, “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” he replies, his husky voice right by your ear sending an excited thrill down your spine, his lips still firmly attached to your neck. “Did you know that sex is a great stress relief?”
“Steve,” you growl playfully, turning in his arms and pushing on his chest. “I told you I’ve got work to finish tonight! I just came in here ‘cause I was hungry.”
“Oh, me too, baby,” he counters suggestively, one eyebrow raised as he fixes you with a predatory grin.
With one finger pointed in an utterly non-threatening fashion, you retreat towards the stairs and warn, “Don’t you dare, McGarrett.”
“Woah,” Steve feints holding his heart, a look of pain contorting his annoyingly handsome features. “I can feel it getting to me.”
“Babe!”
“So stressed,” he fake coughs, taking lumbering steps toward you with a gleam in his eyes. “Can’t- hold on- much-” He catches up to you with one more long stride, tossing you over his shoulder as you squeal in protest.
“You’re a menace, Steven Jack McGarrett,” you howl, giving his backside a firm smack as he runs up the stairs with his precious cargo.
“You’re doing a public service,” your smartass declares, returning the favor with the palm of one of his much larger hands. “This is for the good of Hawaii!”

Danny walks into HQ Grover is standing at the computer desk and Danny groans. “What now?” Grover asks, Danny has been in an even worse mood ever since Steve Mcgarrett, that jerk he’s secretly in love with but will never admit, left a year ago now.
“Charlie, wants to hang out with friends this Halloween then go trick o treating with me.” He complains. Grover raises an eyebrow.
“Are you sure that’s it, and not the fact that this is your first Halloween without Mcgarrett?” That earns him a glare from Danny. Grover just sighs, then says what’s been on his mind since Mcgarrett had left with Cathrine on that plane to god knows where. “You could have left this town. You hated it enough I honestly thought you’d be on the plane with Mcgarrett.”
Danny shakes his head. “And leave Grace and charlie? Never.”
Grover rolls his eyes. “You want to know what I think?”
Danny crosses his arms. “No, not really but I’m sure you’ll tell me anyway.”
And to Danny’s snarky answer he got a replie. “I think you stayed here just in case he ever did come back he’d know where to find you.” Danny doesn’t respond to Grover’s words. He doesn’t know how.
When kono and chin left there was a void yes. He missed the cousins working with them day in and day out, and when Jerry left he’ll admit he missed working with him as well. He even miss Max slightly and his nerdy Halloween costume antics each year. But when Steve left it broke him. He didn’t realize how much he loved the suicidal idiot until he got on that plane and left this town. A town that he knows deep down that Steve will never return to, at least not really.
It was a pretty slow day at the office and by the time he got home he just wanted to sleep and maybe eat something other than TV dinners. He finds himself turning on that damn Chucky movie that Steve insisted to watch every year on Halloween. He never got the point of the damn movie and watching it just made him miss Steve even more. He gets up and goes to his fridge and opens it only to find there isn’t any more beer he sighs and considers calling Adam to bring him some, but he doesn’t feel like bothering him and everyone else on the team already had premade plans.
He plops back down on the couch again watching as the red headed doll runs through the house with a butcher knife chasing someone-Danny wasn’t really sure who- he’d stopped paying attention to the movie awhile ago. He hears a knock on the door and groans knowing it’s tricker treaters. He gets up and grabs the bowl not even bothering to pause the movie. He then opens the door and the sight suprises him. Steve is standing there a soft smile on his face when his eyes meet Danny’s. “I thought you were still with Cathrine.” Danny chokes out.
“It didn’t work out. Besides there’s someone I needed more than her.” Danny swallows hard at the taller man’s words. His head dropping to his stomach. He should have known better then to think that he’d come back to this island just to visit him right? Right?
“Oh, I’m sorry come in.” Danny says, fighting back the fleeing feeling in his gut as he steps aside to let Steve in. Steve walks in to see the Chucky movie playing.
“I thought you hated this movie.” Steve says, a confused look on his handsome features.
Danny crosses his arms. “Maybe I just wanted to watch a hated movie.” He bites back, and then decides to ask the million dollar question. “So who did you come to see?”
“You.”
“Well yeah, you’re in my house man.”
Steve shakes his head and Danny is certain that the only reason his heart didn’t escape his chest is because of his rib cage. “No, dumbass I came back to this island to see you.”
“You did?”
Steve nods. “Truth is Danno I thought I was looking for something, but what I didn’t realize is I found what I was looking for. It was right in front of me the whole time and it was in you.” Danny practically jumped into Steve’s ridiculously sculpted arms. Steve responds by wrapping his arms around Danny. Danny looks up at him.
“I’m going to make you pay for leaving me.” Danny says to him.
Steve just smiles. “I’m sure you will danno. Now why don’t we finish this movie?” Steve says, planting a soft kiss on Danny’s head and both men knew that they wouldn’t be watching the rest of the movie.

Feeback Fest 2024: H50 Fic Recs
For International Fanworks Day, February 15 (for more information see this post by @transformativeworks)
Thank you, babe @stephmcx because of your great fic rec list I noticed this amazing Fic Rec Day! I'm not often on Tumblr anymore scrolling and discovering interesting things and I miss the interaction with other fandom folks. And here you are, posting a great fic rec list of the most epic OTP ever: Steve and Danny.
I have my McDanno 'go-to' fics I love dearly but for this list I put together a different number of McDanno stories from my bookmarks. I hope some of you haven't read them already. Maybe there's a chance you find an unknown great McDanno story. All of my recommanded stories always act like a large safety net of love I let myself fall into when I need those special, unique, and most magic McDanno vibes.
1.Blue Shorts and Gloves by WeirdoOfTheCentury - Summary: Danny... well Danny is Danny. Stella is a protective Sister and both Steve and herself wanna commit a crime when it comes to Danno. @shadowhunterdownworlderhybrid
2.Touch My World With Your Fingertips by kristen999 - Summary: Danny has plans for Steve when he returns home from his reserve drill.
3.More Than Words, Part One by Candy_A - Summary: The first chapter in a series based on the events that follow Danny's rescue from Colombia (Episode 5.17). In this installment, Danny returns to Hawaii and he and Steve begin to cope with the reality of Danny's ordeal there. (Nine parts belong to this outstanding series)
4.See You Tomorrow by bgharison - Summary: "When we were leaving the office, I said, ‘see you tomorrow’ to Chin and Kono, and they said, ‘yeah, see you tomorrow'. I said, ‘see you tomorrow’ to you, and you said, ‘goodnight’, And 'goodnight' sounded like 'goodbye', okay?""I wasn't saying goodbye," he said, finally. But he kept his eyes fixed on the water.
5.Why don't you try me? by azziria - Summary: Steve and Danny both want the same thing, they just don't know it yet.
6.Back To Back (They Faced Each Other) by harrycrewe - Summary: Danny didn’t even realize that Steve was a sentinel when they first met. That probably said a lot right there about what kind of a guide Danny was.
7.Like Death and Taxes by ariadnes_string - Summary: "One of these days," Steve growled, voice low and rough and filthy, "I'm gonna rip this thing off you and gag you with it." (That's my very first McDanno fanfic I read.)
8.Moments In The Skript by joannereads - Summary: Hello all! So, over the last few years I have dreamed of a few scenarios before, during and after the events of The Script. I wanted to add to it, but never found the time, so now I'm making a point of doing it. I'll add to this as and when I have time or the muse is singing. Some of the stories will be teen and up, some explicit. Hope you enjoy! (RPF)
9.Close To Me by joannereads - Summary: Danny Williams is 17. Steve McGarrett is 26. They all live in Hawaii. And their lives are about to get really, really messy. Because Steve? Steve's his brother's best friend.
10.Sock Monkey by Cattraine - Summary: He’s late; he’s running late when the call comes in. One minute he’s sitting at a traffic light on a perfect day on his way to work, bemoaning his lack of coffee and the next he’s screeching the Camaro’s tires towards the accident, heart pounding, keeping perfect time with the chant in his head. No, no, no. It can’t be.

Paradise Undone |2 | S. McGarrett
Two
Emily bade her oldest brother goodbye and made him promise to be careful before she slipped out of the office and waited in the hallway until Steve followed her and pulled her into the stairwell. His mouth covered hers desperate like he had the last night they had in Japan. "Steve, I'm so sorry about your dad." She mumbled against his mouth, "I tried to get out of my shift to go but McCormick wouldn't let me leave." Sara McCormick was her superior officer and hated Emily and how quick she was on her feet and the smart-ass attitude she had when she knew she was right.
Which was a lot of the time and they both knew it.
He shook his head as if he were waving her statement.
He didn't want to see her in a moment of weakness. She only knew him as a strong leader and that's what she needed to keep picturing him as. "You don't have to be strong all the time. Not around me." Not wanting to talk about it, he pressed a bruising kiss on her mouth. The vibrating of her phone pulled them apart and she muttered a curse. She pulled it out of her scrub pocket and groaned when she saw the message, "Sorry, I got to go back to base." "Come over later.' It wasn't a question, it was an order. "Of course." She returned with a smirk as he bent his head to kiss her again. "Go, we don't need Sara punishing you for being late again." She pressed another kiss to his mouth again before going down the stairs.
***
Emily was still tingling when she walked into the hospital. She knew that Steve had been back in Hawaii for the funeral but she didn't realize he had stayed. Of course he had, he wasn't going to rest until the man who killed his father was caught. But what surprised her the most was him working with her ultra stuffy serious older brother.
"You good Williams?" McCormick asked as she came around the counter and placed her phone down on the desk.
"I am fine, my brother just got hurt and I went to double-check his injury." She answered.
The older woman gave her a look, 'It's not that. You saw McGarrett."
Emily pursed her lips together and picked up the files that were on the desk to go through. "McGarrett? As in Commander McGarrett? The man you almost got court-martialed for?" Jane, one of the the other nurses who had been with them for a long time asked as she joined them.
"That would be the one." The lead nurse returned a smirk pulling at the corner of her mouth, knowing that she would be getting under Emily's skin.
"His father died, he is on the Island." The blonde said shortly as she started flipping through the files. "Did you see him?"
"Yes, he is my brother's new partner." The former New Yorker finally spat, knowing that she wouldn't be able to keep it from them forever "And no we don't need to talk about it. It's not any of your business."
"It may not be our business now Sargent but when he breaks your heart it will be." Sarah commented as the girl tapped her finger against the files, "And you know he will, he loves Catherine Rollins just as much as he loves you."
"Let me make one thing completely clear ma'am. Steve McGarrett doesn'tnor will he everlove me. I am just a piece of ass for him." She snapped, "That's it. Excuse me."
**
"Commander McGarrett? Can I help you with something?" Sarah asked as the Commander came onto the floor where they were working just before quitting time. "Where is Williams?" He asked they had brought him in after the whole incident with Victor Hesse and he knew that Emily was there. "Locker room." The redhead tilted her head down the hall to the room.
"Thanks." He answered tensely before he walked down the hall and peeked into the locker room.
The blonde was standing at her locker standing with her back to him, her eyes on her phone. "Hey, you.' He greeted causing her to spin and look at him dropping her phone with a thud onto the floor.
"Steve! What happened?"
"Caught Victor Hesse."
'Victor Hesse? The bastard that you have chased all over the world for 5 years?" Emily questioned as she stood up on her tiptoes to look at the cut and butterfly bandages on his cheek. Not that she didn't trust the nurses downstairs, she did but it always made her feel better if she could double-check their work.
Steve nodded as his free hand caught a hold of her waist and pulled her into him. "He killed my father." The blonde hissed and shook her head, she knew all about Victor Hesse and his brother Anton, she had even been on a task with him and other SEALs trying to hunt them down before she got injured. "Is he dead?" The commander was quiet as his fingers dipped under the material of her scrub down to trace a pattern across the skin of her lower back.
"Steve? Is he dead?" She repeated, cupping his cheeks in her hands, her thumb rubbing against the non-bruised cheekbone.
"Yes." He answered after taking a deep calming breath, he made the right choice of asking to be taken to the hospital on base so he could see Emily afterward, she offered a different sort of comfort than Catherine did.
She offered not only the physical aspect of everything but the emotional side of things, it oddly felt like she was the one that completed him. But he wasn't ready to go to that step yet.
"Can you give me a ride back to the palace? I need to check on your brother and the others" He finally said, pulling away to look at her.
"Of course." She returned pulling away from him fully to gather her belongings.
"Have you seen the hell hole that he has your niece going into it?" "Yes. I tried to tell him we could get a place together that wasn't as bad but he refused, he doesn't want help." Emily had fought with her brother about it, wanting to get off of the base and away from most of the girls in her unit. But Danny stayed stubborn and didn't listen to her or their mother. "What are you thinking?" The Commander smirked, he had to give it to her, she caught on very easily and was usually right there with his plans.
The exact opposite of her brother.
**
At first, Emily wanted to stay behind in her car and let Steve go in and check on her brother and the rest of the team but he insisted that she come in and meet the other two members of the team and he thought that the gift card to the hotel would sound better coming from both of them compared to just him. Instantly, the natural shyness that she had came forth and she grabbed onto Steve's good arm, her blue eyes going from the men working on setting up stuff to the glass office.
"Emily!" Danny's voice exclaimed from his office, "You won't be what he did this time." "What else did you do to my brother?" She asked looking up at the Commander and then at her brother who looked more upset than he had earlier that day. 'He drove a police cruiser onto a freighter boat." "You did what?" She shouldn't have been surprised but she was, Steve was known to do stuff like that especially if he thought it would get their mission completed. Danny nodded smirking, this was a good way to get her to stop seeing him, "He drove a car onto a moving boat with me in it.' Chewing on the inside of her bottom lip thoughtfully before giggling, "Yeah that's pretty on track with him.' "Em, I don't want you seeing him anymore." He ordered causing her to laugh even more before turning back to the two other people in the bullpen. 'Yeah, I don't think that is going to happen." Steve chuckled if she didn't listen to her mother what made Danny think she would listen to him

Redemption | Chapter 5
BACK IN BLACK
As they started the drive back to the house, Sam finally felt herself starting to calm down, finally compartmentalizing as she had been taught.  Her breathing under control, her heart rate slower, Sam took a deep breath and watched the beautiful scenery of the island go by.  She also started formulating a plan on what she needed to do moving forward.
Mae glanced over at her passenger.  She knew Sam was up to something in that brain of hers.  Hoping to distract her a little longer, hoping she could stop ‘crazy’ from happening the minute they stepped over the threshold, Mae pondered what she could say to catch Sam off guard.  Throw her a little.  So, she went for the jugular.
“He looked damn good,” Mae said, with a little growl in her voice.
Sam barked out a laugh that ended up in a snort, causing both women to bust out laughing.  “Yeah.  Yeah, he did,” Sam conceded, quietly.  “He definitely filled out those dress blues nicely.”
“I noticed you guys didn’t talk much,” she fished.
“Nah.  It’s okay.  I did what I came to do,” Sam replied.  The hint of sadness in her voice was different than Mae had heard the past few days.  This sadness had nothing to do with John and everything to do with Steve.  Mae had been there for the four years between the deaths of the Devereauxs and Doris McGarrett.  She had seen what an utter handful Sam and Steve had been together, but they were also so loyal to each other, always looking out for each other, always there when the other needed it.  Mae knew how heartbroken Sam had been when Steve left, when John sent him away.  To Mae, it seemed as if it was a loss Sam never truly got over.
Seeing Sam slip back into a melancholy she was scared would start to consume her, Mae went for another distraction.  “How about we stop at Kimo’s for lunch?  I think we could use the sustenance,” Mae said.
“Sure, Mae, that sounds good,” Sam responded with a small smile.
After lunch at their favorite little café, Mae suggested taking a walk along the beach, once again stalling for time to get Sam’s frame of mind straight.   “Mae, do I really look like I’m in beach walking attire?” Sam asked with a lopsided grin, gesturing to the rather warm dress uniform she was still wearing.  Mae acquiesced.
“Ah, you’re right.  Sorry.  I imagine you’re a little itchy and probably about to keel over from the heat stroke,” Mae joked.
“Um, yep, pretty accurate,” Sam chuckled as she looped her left arm through Mae’s right.  They made their way to the car and headed for home.
Sam once again couldn’t keep her eyes off the house next door as they passed.  She had come up with a few ideas while at lunch, in between Mae’s constant barrage of stories of old family friends.  Sam knew Mae was trying to distract her.  Sam also knew that Mae knew it wasn’t going to work but she was going to try anyway.  Just another reason Sam loved and revered her Aunt Mae.  The woman didn’t know when to quit, when to take no for an answer and she absolutely refused to give up, no matter what.  I guess that’s where I get it from, Sam thought with a smile.
Once inside the house, Sam made her way upstairs, making excuses about wanting to get changed and rest.  Mae knew better but she was also keenly aware of the fact that not one single thing she said or did was going to change Sam’s mind.  Mae just hoped she didn’t have to arrange to have bail money at the ready before the afternoon was over.
“Well sweetie, if you’re going to lie down for a bit, I think I’m going to make some tea and follow suit, if you don’t mind.  I’m sure if you can’t rest, you’ll find something…constructive to do.”
Sam snickered.  Mae Devereaux would have made a good agent.  Hmm, maybe she had been at some point, given all the traveling she did when Sam was young. I never thought of running her through any databases, Sam thought, only half-jokingly.  But, for the moment, she simply said, “I understand.  It’s been a rough morning.  Get some rest.”
Mae smiled at her and went into the kitchen, shaking her head and sighing.
Sam climbed the stairs to her room and peeled off the blazing hot uniform.  Pulling her hair out of the tight, headache-inducing French twist, she put it back into a ponytail.  After throwing on a black ensemble of a t-shirt and a pair of jeans, she changed into her favorite pair of matching boots.  Back in black, Sam thought as she looked in the mirror.  After running an inventory of what she needed through her head, she changed her mind and stripped off the jeans for a more practical pair of cargo pants.  She loaded them up with her lock picks, phone for photos, a small flashlight, and she grabbed her badge just to be safe.  Sliding her Glock into the back of her waistband, pulling her t-shirt over the outline of the gun, she waited until she heard Mae close her door before she left her own room.  Sam quietly went downstairs and walked into the oversized pantry, pulling out a few pairs of gloves.  Mae loved to cook and ate her steak as bloody as the next guy, but she was completely grossed out by actually having to touch raw meat.  Sam said a silent thanks that she always had a bulk supply of food grade, nitrile gloves stashed away.  They were nearly identical to the black latex gloves she had used at crime scenes over the years.
Sam walked out the back French doors, making a beeline for the edge of the fence that separated the Devereaux property from the McGarrett’s.  Sam stuck her head around and made sure the yard was empty and quietly made her way along the fence line, ducking under the police tape on the lanai and knelt at the back door, pulling on the gloves.  She made quick work of picking the lock, silently stepping into the home she knew like the back of her hand.  After all, she had basically grown up in this house, spending just as much time there as her own.
Taking a deep breath, Sam advanced into the den.  A sob stuck in her throat as she stood in the space where John, the man who had saved her life, had lost his in one of the ugliest, most violent of ways.  She felt cold standing there, as if with his death, the warmth that had always wrapped itself around her had died, too.  What had once been her safe space, now, wasn’t.  Victor Hesse took that away.  It was no more evident than the moment Sam’s eyes settled on the wall.  Like a punch to the gut, a wave of nausea swept over Sam as she stared at the blood.  John’s blood.  Before any further invasive thoughts sprung to mind, she was spared by a noise coming from the garage.  Like a flip of a switch, Sam was back in complete control of her faculties.  She yanked off her gloves, stuffed them in her pocket and grabbed her Glock out of her waistband.
Sam quietly released the safety on the gun and stealthily made her way to the garage door.  Listening carefully, it sounded as though whoever was in the garage was around the Marquis.  She heard the rustle of the car cover being removed.  Man, John loved that car.  She had spent hours with him in the garage after Munich.  John had dragged her into the project, believing that somehow, some way, it would help Sam’s healing begin.  And as usual, John had been right.  They continued to work on the car when Sam would come home for holidays or vacations from LA, hoping they would be able to take it out at some point.
Shaking the newest flood of memories from her mind to focus on the intruder on the other side of the door, Sam carefully turned the knob.  Praying the door wouldn’t squeak and give away the element of surprise, she slowly swept her eyes over the space.  While the afternoon sunlight poured through the small window on the opposite wall, the garage was still dimly lit.  It took a second for her eyes to focus and once they did, she located the figure of a man crouching down by the work bench. He had his back to her.  Moving in on the target, she was taken by surprise when he swung around, grabbed her and in one swift move, pinned her face first against the Marquis.  Sam countered just as fast and reversed the pin, sticking the muzzle of her gun between the intruder’s eyes before recognition set in.
“Steve! You ass!”  Sam growled.
The surprise was evident on Steve’s face.  But then, for a second, it looked as though…he was having fun.  And sure enough, he gave her his best Cheshire cat grin.
“Good way to get yourself shot, you idiot,” Sam said haughtily as she placed her gun back in her waistband.
“Um, this is my father’s house, so a good way to get yourself shot,” Steve said as he showed her the gun in his hand.  “How the hell did you get in here?”
Sam bit the corner of her lip, as she always did when she got caught with her hand in the proverbial cookie jar.  Pondering how he would react, she just stuck her right hand into her pocket and held up her lock picks.  Steve’s eyebrow shot up.  Sam rolled her eyes.  “As I was planning on technically breaking and entering an active crime scene, I figured why implicate Mae by asking for her keys.”  Steve looked at her strangely for a brief instant when she said Mae had keys to his father’s house.  Then the SEAL mask was back in place.
The pair just stared at each other for a minute.  It wasn’t awkward, as Sam predicted it would be.  More, bittersweet, she thought.  Sam’s gaze softened and without thinking, grabbed the front of Steve’s shirt and pulled him into a hug, wrapping her arms around his neck.  She was slightly surprised when, without hesitation, Steve wrapped his muscular arms around her torso and hugged her back.  Tightly.
“I’m so sorry.”  Sam whispered, stroking the back of his head.
“Me too.”
They held on for another moment before breaking the embrace, but remaining in each other’s personal space.  They just looked at each other for another moment before Sam broke the silence and said, “We need to talk.”
“I know it’s been a long time, and with the way we left things…I wanted to reach out, Sam, really I did.  It’s just…” Steve struggled to find the right words.
“Steve,” she interrupted, placing her fingers on his lips.  It was an innocent gesture that turned into an intimate moment between them neither had been expecting.  Sam swallowed hard before removing her hand from his mouth, continuing.  “Yeah, I want to talk about that, too, but there are way more pressing matters we need to address.  First…”
“Sam, I swear to you, Mae is safe here.”  Steve knew Mae was the only family Sam had left and he would protect that with his life.  In hopes of reassuring her, he continued.  “I will personally see to it that she is watched and protected.  But I promise you, this will not touch her.”
Sam smiled sadly at Steve.  He really had no idea, did he?  Better than anyone, Sam knew he couldn’t promise that.  “So, you’re looking me in the eyes and telling me that Mae is safe?”
“Yes.”
“From Victor Hesse?”  Steve’s eyes widened slightly at Sam’s question, particularly the emphasis on Hesse’s name.  She continued, softly.  “Yeah, I know it was Victor Hesse.”  Tears threatened yet again but these were not tears of grief.  They were tears of fear, of rage.
Sam could see in his eyes that he was fighting an internal war.  What was it, she wondered as he started to speak.  “You know about Hesse?”
“Yeah, Mac, I know it was Hesse,” Sam confessed.  Steve’s reaction to her childhood nickname for him quickly transformed from playful into one of surprise and something she didn’t quite recognize.  Perhaps it was fear.
“And Anton?” Steve cautiously asked.  “You know…”
“That he’s burning in the deepest layers of hell?  Yeah, I know,” Sam stopped short of saying the sick bastard’s name.  And that was all it took for a tear to escape.  Before either knew it, Steve lifted his hand to cup the side of her face, catching the tear as it slid down her cheek. Before she could stop herself, Sam allowed herself to melt a little into Steve.  Falling completely would not end well, she knew.  He’s a SEAL.  He was only here for a few days to wrap up John’s affairs and then he would go back to traipsing around the world, hunting bad guys while she got on a flight back to LA where she would do the same.  Taking a deep breath, hoping to diffuse the situation before it got to awkward, she spoke, breaking the spell with a silly, flippant question.
“So, didja miss me?”  Sam chuckled, pulling back slightly.  But it was also a sad query – had he ever thought about her?  About them?  Had he missed her, had he tried to contact her, had he even wanted to?  Sam would have settled for anything at this point, which if she was honest, made her feel like a silly little girl.  So, she was taken by complete surprise at his answer.
“Every day, Sam.  Every damn day.”   The two briefly got lost in each other’s eyes.  Sam’s were full of surprise and bittersweet pain at Steve’s confession while Steve’s were filled with sorrow.  They had lost so much at such a young age, most of all they had lost each other.  He ran his thumb over her bottom lip as he leaned down…
“Hands up, don’t move!”
Within the blink of an eye, Steve, Sam and some blonde ha’ole had drawn their weapons on each other and the two men engaged in a shouting match.  Sam just stared at Steve when she realized he had flipped her around behind him, in protection mode.
“Boys.”  More yelling.
“Boys!” Sam said, slightly louder.
Enough.  “HEY!!”  Sam yelled.  Silence.  “Hmm, ooh, thought. Why don’t we all show each other our badges and clear this right up?”  The two men looked at her with a look that was a cross between ‘she’s grown a 2nd head’ and ‘that makes sense’.  Sam loudly whispered in Steve’s ear.  “And if you ever pull the soccer mom arm, slash women & children behind the big bad SEAL move on me again, I will throat punch you.”  Steve gave her a dirty look and rolled his eyes.
The two men went on to argue that neither were putting their guns down.  Sam rolled her eyes, but the truth was, she wasn’t putting her gun down either.
Finally agreeing to pull out IDs on the count of three, everyone reached for their credentials.  “One.  Two.  Three.”  The blonde was Detective Daniel Williams, Honolulu Police Department.  Aha, Sam thought.  So, this was the guy she planned on giving a hard time after his refusal to give into her request for some interagency cooperation.  Huh, she thought.  Not bad.
“Lieutenant Devereaux?  We spoke the other day, right?”  Danny asked.  Steve shot her a look, which she ignored.
“Yes, Detective Williams.  You were less than inclined to, how shall I say, throw me a bone,” Sam replied playfully.  Danny turned his attention to Steve.
“Listen, I’m really sorry about your father, but you can’t be here right now,” Danny said to Steve.  While they exchanged a few barbs, Sam studied Detective Williams.  Jersey accent.  Tie.  Too much hair product.  She smiled inwardly, thinking how fun he would be to tease and mess with.  He seemed like the kind of cop she would want on her side.  She got a good vibe from him, despite their initial interaction and the current state of affairs.  And he was pretty cute, too.  Before she could get any further with her assessment of the cute cop, Steve grabbed John’s red tool box from the work bench with one hand and Sam’s hand with his other.
“Leave the box or get arrested,” Danny said.
“All right,” Steve said.  “Gonna call for backup?”
“An ambulance,” Danny replied.  Sam had to duck her head to hide her snicker.  She was surprised when Steve put the box down on the back of the Marquis and looked at her.  She couldn’t read the look on his face.  The way he was staring into her eyes, it was as though he was trying to read her, figure out what she was thinking.  There was a brief moment that passed between them before he spoke.
“Wanna find some trouble, Red?” Steve asked her with a twinkle in his eyes and an incredibly sexy lopsided grin on his face.
“With you, Mac?  Hell yeah,” Sam instantly replied.  She couldn’t help but smirk.  They were settling into their old verbal back-and-forth in less than five minutes, despite being separated for nearly two decades.  How was that possible, Sam wondered.  Yet, it felt good.  It felt right.  It also felt like, all of a sudden, Sam knew her world was going to turn upside down.  Again.  She resumed chewing on the left corner of her lip, unsure of what direction this was going to take her.
Before Sam or Danny knew what was happening, Steve was on the phone with Governor Pat Jameson.  Looking into Sam’s eyes, Steve said, “Governor, I’ll take the job.  No, let’s just say I found some things that changed my mind.”
“Take the job?” Sam mouthed at him, which simply elicited a wink.  Next thing she knows, she’s listening to him take an oath.  What the hell is going on, she thought.  Steve didn’t break eye contact with her until he hung up the phone and once again grabbed the tool box.  And Sam’s hand.
“Now it’s my crime scene.”  And with that, Steve pulled Sam through the door.  She had the courtesy to at least shrug in empathy and throw a look of apology at Danny, who was standing there with his jaw wide open.  Sam simply stared at the back of Steve’s head as he dragged her out of his father’s house.

When he was five years old, I asked my son Steve what he wanted to be when he grew up. He said, "I want to be a cop, dad, like you." I told him to be anything but that.
(John McGarrett, 1x02)
Danny: Steve?!
Steve: Hey, babe.
Danny: Wh-what... You're gonna drive me to work with a squad car? Why and how you... hey, where's our car, where's Misty, huh? And where are your cargo pants... Steve... Why are you wearing HPD's uniform?
Steve: Cause I'm a cop.
Danny: No! Huh, yes... I mean, of course you are. You're Five-O, right? Five-O, Steven, not HPD.
Steve: Yes, I am.
Danny: What's that answer? Geez, Steve, what...
Steve: I mean you're right, Danny. I'm Five-0. And I'm a cop cause I'm Five-0. I'm a cop cause I feel it in my heart. But, you know, technically I... I was a Navy Seal just called a cop by people and...
Danny: And?
Steve: I did it.
Danny: You did what?
Steve: I passed all HPD's exams.
Danny: ...
Steve: Don't worry, I don't have to attend the Academy. Governor said that Five-O was my school of life and the best FTEP.
Danny: Whoa, whoa... Governor? Exams? Why the hell I know nothing, ha?! And why... Why, Steve? You know you're the best, you know we love you, I LOVE YOU, you know you don't have to prove anything... you know, right? All people call you a cop cause... you're a cop. As you said, your heart is blue. So... why? Please, don't say you needed another diploma on your wall cause I'm not gonna believe in that shit.
Steve: Okay… You wanna know the truth?
Danny: Yeah, please.
Steve: I… Remember that tape? My dad's confession?
Danny: How could I forget.
Steve: You know… He was right. Five years old me wanted to be a cop, so badly, for… for him. But he didn't want me to be a cop. He… didn't want me. You know the story, Danno. He thought Navy would be better. More safe? I don't know what was in his mind but I know he was wrong. Remember? I told you I started hating Navy after Freddie's death. But it's not a whole truth. I, um, let's say I hated Navy all the time. Yeah.
Danny: But…
Steve: Yeah, Super Seal. I was that, why not. What else I had to do? I… Look, Danny… I was a shit. A mess. A lonely Navy boy with his sad, very sad life. I was… empty. I was sure I would die like that. But once I found you and our ohana and… I wasn't empty anymore. And I became what I once wanted to be, a cop. But…
Danny: Yeah?
Steve: I became Five-O for him, for my dad. But soon I became a cop for… for myself. I love that job, Danny. I need it. It, it gave me a life. My feelings. All these people we've met, whom we've helped. Ohana. It gave me you.
Danny: *heart-eyes*
Steve: Yes, I'm a cop. And these exams… You know, I thought it would be nice. Like a… final touch. I know, it's stupid but… I wanted to do that. Hell, I want to wear the same uniforms as you! I want to represent you, my life, not my past, for all these festive days to come. And I… I wanna be a cop like you, Chin, Kono… Okay, mostly like you. You gave me so much, detective Williams, you teached me so much. Look, I will never be such a Sherlock like you but… You made me a cop, Danny. A good one, I think. These exams, um… It's like, um… a child-made card for you. This HPD uniform, this car... It's just for a while, it's a surprise, oh, that's why I told you nothing about it. It's just a one ride. At the office I'll become your Five-O neanderthal animal, promise.
Danny: Oh, Steven, Steven.
Steve: What?
Danny: What? I love you, you big child - that's what!
Steve: Hey, I'm not... I love you too.
Danny: So...
Steve: So?
Danny: It's a child-made card for me, yeah?
Steve: Yeah.
Danny: So I, um, I can drive, right?
Steve: NO! I mean... No, honey. Let me be your escort today, my sweet VIP!
*A few minutes later*
Danny: You know, just wondering... Why on Earth did they let you take these exams... You know: traffic violation, speeding citations...
Steve: Citations?! I never got one!
Danny: You should.

Mcdanno reunited
2 years after leaving Danny receives a phone call from Steve throwing his world into a spin once again. But it's Steve McGarrett, what else would he expect.
Chapter 1 - The Call
Danny Williams hated when people interrupted his sleep. Well the sleep that he did get, i mean after all that he has been through in his life there was no question to why he has sleepless nights. And tonight was not one of those nights. Tonight was a night where Charlie wasn't asking him to stay up playing games with him and Grace wasnt up late watching a tv show meaning he was able to go to sleep peacefully but then his god damn phone had to ring at 2 am. There wasnt many nights that Danny had been woken up to his phone in the middle of the night, not since Steve left.
After that Danny took some time off of Five 0, spend some time with the kids and get used to the fact that Steve wasnt there anymore, only returning about a year ago deciding that he wasnt going to be out in the field as much and let his team take the reigns. He was suprisinly content with the paperwork, maybe it was the fact that he knew that he was safe, that his kids didnt have to worry about him ending up in the hospital in life threating condition. He blamed it on his age, he wasnt getting older, but then there was a part of him that did think that maybe it was because he didnt have Steve around to make him do crazy things.
Danny groaned before turning around in his bed and grabbing his phone. He answers without looking at the caller ID.
"Hello" he grumbles whiping the sleep out of his eyes.
"Danno" a voice whispers. Danny stills. It couldnt be. A voice that he hadnt heared in 2 years. A voice that he heard every single day for 10 years. A voice that he longed to hear.
"Steve" he says back, sitting up fully. "Steve, hey are you alright" he asked concerned. He hears crying on the other side of the phone.
"Hey Steve, listen to me i need you to calm down okay. Tell me what the hell is going on" he pleads. His heart thumps against his chest, he felt like he couldnt breathe, the panic was too much.
"Oh Danno... i dont..." Steve starts before sobbing again. Danny gets out of his bed unable to sit anymore.
"Steve. Please what is going on. Where are you".
"Im at Cedars-Sinai" he whispers. Danny heart sinks.
"Your in a hospital" Danny asks paniced. This was good, being in a hospital was never a good thing.
"Why are you in the hospital, Steve. What happened to you," Danny couldnt handle this, Steve was in hospital, in California.
"Its not me that im here for" Steve says finally calming down a little bit. Danny felt himself finally breathe again. So Steve wasnt hurt, that was good but then that lef the question for why was he in a hospital.
"Why are you in a hospital then. Who do you know that's hurt" Danny questions more but then there is another voice on the phone.
"Mr McGarrett" a voice asks and then he can hear shuffling.
"Danny please come. I need you" is all that is said before the line goes dead.
"Steve" Danny asks into the phone but there is no reply. He moves the phone away from his ear and looking at the screen. He felt so many emotions, he was confused, scared, angry. What is it now that after 2 years that Steve decides to contact him.
Sitting down he puts his head in his hands and lets out a shaky breathe. Steve wants him to come to California. Steve needs him, but why now, its not like he needed Danny in the last 2 years. But Danny knew Steve better than anyone and he knew that Steve would never cry like that if something wasnt wrong. And God Danny hated that he was even considering getting on the next available flight to California but he was.
Grabbing his phone he looks up flights to California. God he was going to hate himself for this later. He books the flights and grabs a duffle bag from his closet putting as many clothes as he could into it, he didnt know how long he was going to be gone for.
Danny door opens slowly and Grace stands at the door rubbing her eyes. "Danno what are you doing" she asks him still processing the scene in front of her. Danny really didnt know how he was going to explain this to her. I mean its not every night that you wake up to your dad packing a bag frantically.
He sighs and stops for a second. "Im going to California" he tells her closing the closet door.
"California. Why are you going to California" she asks him confused. Danny steps in front of her and sighs.
"Steve is in California" he tells her and this really puts her mind into a spin.
"Steve. As in Uncle Steve is in California".
"Yes".
"Why are you going to see Steve. I mean i thought you werent speaking to him" she asks him and Danny sighs putting his hands to his hair.
"He rang. He's in hospital".
"Hospital" Grace asks frantically and Danny puts his hands on her shoulders calming her down.
"He's in hospital buts its not for him" he assures her and this leaves her more confused.
"What... what does that even mean," Danny groans.
"I dont even know honey. He wasnt saying much to me on the phone but something is wrong and i cant just leave him to figure it out on his own. He needs me" Danny explain closing his duffle bag.
"Danno" Grace says and Danny turns and looks at her.
"I know you love Uncle Steve" she starts. "And i know that you would do anything for him, but has it ever occured to you that he might walk out on you again if you let him back in" she asks him. Danny knew she was scared. She saw what he was like after Steve left. He wasnt the same Danno as he was. It was like light was taken out of him, the light that Steve had put into him and it was only now after 2 full years that he was finally starting to get back to normal.
Danny sighs before taking his daughter into his arms. "I know that your scared honey but i have to do this. I have to go to him" Danny explain and her grip around him gets tighter.
"I just dont want you to get hurt" she explains and Danny shakes his head.
"I won't. I won't let him hurt me again" Danny explains and Grace sighs.
"You can't guarentee that," Danny nods.
"I know. But i will do my best". Grace looks at her head and shakes her head.
"You know what, i am coming with you" she says turning on her heal and heading towards her room. Danny is stunned for a second before shaking his head.
"No you are not" he whisper yells at her as he follows into her room. She fishes out a bag from her closet and starts putting clothes into it like her father.
"Yes i am. If you are going to be around Steve again you need someone to keep you in check and there is no better person than me" Grace says firmly and Danny groans.
"Gracie i am a grown man i can handle myself" Danny tells her and she nods her head.
"I know but I hate seeing you hurt and im not going to allow you to be. So im coming" she says finally and Danny groans knowing that this was going nowhere.
"Who is meant to look after Charlie. I cant leave him on his own" Danny explains and Grace shrugs her shoulders.
"Getting junior and Tani to look after him. I mean Danno we have a big enough Ohana that there is bound to be someone who can look after him while we are gone". Danny knows that there is nothing that he can do to get her to stay so he decides to save his energy.
"Fine. I will call Tani and Junior, book your flight and as soon as they are here we are leaving" he tells her. She smiles at him and he turns walking out of the room. How is it that in the span of 10 minutes that Steve McGarrett can make his world go absolutly crazy.
After a quick converstation with Junior on the phone, Danny puts his and Graces bags down near the door before heading to Charlies room. Opening the door, he steps inside quietly walking towards Charlies bed and crouching down next to it.
"Hey, Charlie buddy can you wake up please" he asks shaking the boy slightly. The boy shuffles groaning.
"Dad" he asks confused as he turns his head to his father.
"Hey" Danny says quietly. "So I need to go away for a little bit" Danny explains and the younger boy looks at him confused.
"What do you mean. Where are you going" he asks and Danny gives him a small smile. "It's just a work thing. Im going to California".
"For how long?"
"I dont know but it shouldnt be too long. I'll be back before you know it".
"And is Gracie going too". Danny nods his head.
"Yeah she is. But uncle Junior and Aunt Tani are going to come and stay with you for tonight and then were are going to figure it all out okay" Danny explains. Charlie nods and reaches out and hugs his dad.
"You promise you wont be gone for to long right". Danny nods and hugs the boy tigher.
"Not to long. And hey" Danny pulls back. "I will bring you back something from California".
"Like an action figure" Charlie asks excitedly.
"Yeah an action figure if thats what you want okay" Danny says and Charlie beams excitedly. The door opens and Charlie and Danny look at Grace as she stands in the door.
"Tani and Junior are here" she explains and Danny nods before turning his head.
"We have to go now buddy but we will be back before you know it" he says hugging his son again and giving him a kiss on his forehead. "I love you".
"I love you too Danno". Danny pull back, standing up and walking towards the door. Grace walks towards Charlie, kneeling down and giving him a hug. Danny watches the scene from the door with a smile on his face.
The front door opens and Tani and Junior walking in looking at Danny as he stands in the doorway. Danny nods his head at them and walks over towards them.
"What is going on Danny" Tani asks him.
"Yeah why are you going to California" Junior asks. Danny sighs.
"I dont know much yet" Danny starts and Junior and Tani are even more confused.
"Steve is there" Danny states and this causes Tani and Junior to look at each other confused. It had been 2 years since anyone had heard from Steve. They didnt know why he had called after all of this time but they werent suprised that the first person he called was Danny.
"Why is he is California" Tani asks. Danny shrugs.
"I dont know. All i know is that he is in hospital. That he's not hurt but that he needs me," and that made it all make sense. Tani and Junior knew that Danny would drop everything for Steve in the blink of an eye, without thinking twice and they also knew that Steve would never admit that he needed someone unless he really needed them.
"Do you know anything more" Tani asks and Danny shakes his head.
"No but i know what hospital he is at and I will ring as soon as i know something," and that was enough for Tani and Junior.
Grace closes the door behind her and the 3 older adults all look at her. "I got Charlie back to sleep telling him that if he went back to sleep that you two would make him pancakes in the morning" she explains and Danny laughs at his daughters bargining. Tani and Junior shake their heads with a grin on their faces.
"Well looks like we are going to have to put our cooking skill to the test tomorrow if we are going to make pancakes. We are going to have to beat Danny" Junior says. Tani laughs as Danny has his mouth open wide in shock.
"Hey you two can not beat Danno alright. Its impossible" Danny exclaims and the other 3 laugh.
"We will see. We'll have to get Charlie verdict in the morning then" Tani says and Danny holds his finger out at the pair.
"I will hold you to that".
Grace laughs grabbing the bags. "Dad we really should get going" she explains and then they are brought back to reality. The reality of why they are all here in the first place. Danny looks at her and nods. A knott starts growing in his stomach.
"Okay" he says simply before opening the door. Grace walks out past him and to the car and Danny turns to Tani and Junior.
"We will text when we land and call when we know something" he explains and they nod. Danny nods and them before turning and walking towards the car. He get in the front as Grace had put the bags in the back and turn the car on. As he drives out of the driveway he looks in the mirror seeing Tani and Junior waving goodbye to them. And for the first time that night, it finally hits him that he is leaving to see Steve. He is going to see Steve.

Mr. Fix It
For a man who refuses to don a hat unless he’s in uniform, Steven J. McGarrett sure wears a lot of them. A decorated Navy SEAL, leader of the governor’s task force, expert pilot, sport pro, amateur (although he’d argue with you on that) mechanic, occasional ukulele player, son, brother, friend, uncle, husband, dog dad, and now race car-bed-putter-together. The man’s talents clearly know no bounds.
Leaning against the doorway of Charlie’s bedroom in Danny’s house, you can’t help but admire the view before you. Your husband has traded in his usual cargo pants and t-shirt for a pair of form fitting jeans that hug his lower half in all the right places and a plaid button up that shows off his muscular back and arms. A tool belt is slung low across his hips, and a few dirty jokes featuring the hammer and screwdriver tucked into their designated slots pop into your head unbidden. Steve slides the pencil out from behind his ear to make a mark on the wood, then grips the writing implement between his teeth to free up his hands. That draws your attention to the scruff currently dotting his cheeks and the sexy patch of gray along his chin that’s been steadily growing with every birthday that passes. He bends over to fit two pieces of the bed frame together, and your promise to Danny to not fool around in his house is suddenly dangerously close to being broken.
Passing Steve on your way to collect more wallpaper, you gather two handfuls of denim in a firm squeeze and appreciatively murmur, “Nice ass, stud.”
Your husband lets out an amused grunt, straightening up to his full height and tucking the pencil back in its rightful spot before turning to you with one eyebrow raised. “What was that, you cheeky little brat? Huh? You objectifying me again?”
“I said,” you emphasize as you climb the ladder with your next few feet of racing stripe wallpaper, “that’s a nice brass stud!”
“Yeah, okay,” Steve says, eyes twinkling with mirth. “Hey, lemme ask you something.”
“Yeah?”
“You think Danno could fit in this bed, too?”
You turn to your husband, trying and failing to bite back your laughter. “You’re objectively the worst. And I’m telling him you said-”
Steve’s phone ringing interrupts your threat, and he brandishes his cell with a playful grin. “Speak of the Jersey devil.” He answers the phone, the smile melting off his face at whatever he’s hearing on the other end. After a few tense moments, he ends the call and then walks up to you on the ladder with a sigh.
“Duty calls?” you ask knowingly.
“Sorry, baby,” he pouts, leaning up to kiss you three times for I love you.
“Don’t get hurt, Steve!” you call to his retreating form down the hallway, getting a confident, “I won’t!” in response.
“I’m serious,” you yell louder as his footsteps grow quieter. “You’ve reached your allotted hospital visits for the month!”

Later that night, you find yourself in the same position as this morning at the entrance to Charlie’s room, this time admiring the way the space has transformed into a little boy’s dream and enjoying the Indy 500 animatedly playing out before you.
“…and the crowd goes wild,” your husband declares, whisper-yelling cheers as Charlie grins proudly beside him. Steve tucks a victorious Charlie into bed before smoothing the little tyke’s hair down and pressing his lips to his forehead with a quiet, “I love you, buddy.” He joins you in the doorway, and your heart swells at Charlie’s voice sleepily calling out, “Goodnight, Uncle Steve! Goodnight, Auntie!”
“Goodnight, bubba, we love you,” you respond softly, flicking off the light switch and leaving only the glowing CHARLIE’S ROOM on the opposite wall as a nightlight.
“Hey, race you in the morning?” Steve asks, head tilted in question. Charlie nods enthusiastically and his uncle reciprocates his excitement with a resounding, “Boom.”
Steve pulls the door shut behind you, and as you make your way down the hallway, you wrap your arms around his waist and lean into his solid form. “Should we make one?”
Your husband looks down at you, one eyebrow raised, and squeezes your hip. “You want a little race car bed, too?”
“Steve-” you groan, but he carries on with, “I mean, sure, but I’ll smoke your ass every time, babe.”
Laughing, you grip his face in one hand and smush his cheeks together until his nose scrunches up from a smile. “No, you doofus,” you correct him, “I meant should we start trying? Make a mini you?”
Steve’s eyes shine with adoration, and he shifts your hand to his mouth to press kisses against your palm. “You want to have a baby?”
“I think being a daddy would suit you well, Commander,” you purr, trailing your fingers down the sliver of skin peeking between the open buttons of his plaid shirt.
“That turn you on?” your husband teases in turn, taking note of the glint in your eye.
“I mean…” You trail off, looking up at him with a suggestive smirk. Using the collar of his shirt as leverage, you tug him closer and confess, “Uncle Steve with his kiddos is a hottie, don’t get me wrong, but Daddy Steve? One baby tucked up in each of those arms?” Your hands glide along his muscular biceps and you let out a hum of appreciation.
Steve’s eyes go wide, and he stills your wandering hands. “Woah there, two? At the same time?”
“Well, we can’t have one of your biceps getting bigger than the other,” you clarify. “You’d look dumb.”
“Oh, of course, of course,” he acquiesces, nodding. “You really want twins?”
“Steve,” you tut. “Don’t tell me the big bad Navy SEAL is afraid of dealing with two tiny humans.”
“I’m not afraid, I’m just, y’know- one is- is a lot already. Joanie could be a handful, so think about two of ‘em, two at the same time would be-”
“Hey,” you cut off his rambling, pulling him down to your level for a sound kiss. “How ‘bout we go home and get some practice in, and we’ll talk more about this tomorrow?” Steve’s hands glide down your body until they settle on your backside with a firm grip, and you take that as a yes. Pressing your lips to his again, you murmur, “Sound like a plan, McGarrett?”
He fixes you with a devilish grin in response. “Hooyah.”
