I have conflicting opinions on this whole episode, and this scene even more. Then I read the tags added by @merlin-wolfgang-trades-hale and I stopped to reflect a bit more.

Let's just say that the whole "dating&mating season" in season 10 is so pitiful and badly written, that if it was a cishet dudebro homophobic asshole desperate attempt at screaming NO HOMO!!! ....Let's just say maybe the dudebro should consider another career path because clearly, writing is definitely not his thing. If ever, the whole vet disaster, and then the Brooke-dating Schrödinger Problem which exists and not-exists at the same time, and that hallucinating mushrooms-induced nightmare that was Joanna....only helped doing a thing, just one: confirming that Steve and Danny are NOT heterosexual, are NOT interested in making ANY KIND OF HET RELATIONSHIP work, and the only person for each other is, well, the other.

I agree that Danny here is in a bad mental place, just as bad as Steve’s (and if Steve’s collapsing mental health finally brought him to run away and try to find himself alone and far away from everyone and everything connected to his past and what he did for that past....well, I can only say that Danny couldn’t be in a better position when he hooked up with Joanna in a bar restroom. The whole episode is so wildly OOC and Danny is so clearly trying to interpret a role that doesn't fit his skin, that I can only parallel his actions with Steve's final escape: a desperate soul's last attempt to find a meaning and a grounding when they feel the ground giving way under their feet, because they keep refusing the chance that exactly because of their emotional trauma and past baggage, a romance between them could not only work, but thrive and finally help them heal. But this is matter for another rant). And I agree that probably he doesn't like having all these folks merrily gathered on the couch, while he's mourning Grace’s absence and the emotional stability her physical presencein his life, at his side, has granted him in any context (he's always carried on for her), while he's consuming himself in the guilt of having caused an innocent woman's death only by involving her in his messed up head, while he's mourning the (apparent) loss of his first love, Brooke, and his true and last love, Steve, by being forced at seeing them together (and it doesn't do that Steve doesn't fucking care about her, doesn't look at her, doesn't touch her if not by appearances sake, and his hand is barely hovering on her shoulder like he's frightened he might catch some kind of heterosexual virus if he interacts with her too closely. All the time basking into Danny’s presence, using his trademark Smooth Dog move on him, contemplating how hard he'll have to fight the urge to kiss Danny’s forehead and sneak his hand inside Danny's cleavage), while he's contemplating that once again everyone has left him behind after having consumed him or having exploited everything he could give, everyone but Steve, who's the one he cannot have.....

So Danny probably wanted an alone night with Steve, this day only, and God help me but he was in such an emotionally frail state, that I fear that he could've really blurted out everything he felt. After Joanna's death he didn't talk to Steve about it, even when he asked - and this can only mean (and Steve is well aware of it) that Danny's bottling everything up and he's a second away from exploding, leaving only death and blood and rubbles in the aftermath. He knows his boy. He just doesn't know which kind of explosion he's about to live through: the angry, mean, violent, destructive one? Or the emotional breakdown kind of collapse?

Either way, Steve knows they're both on a bad path. He knows that if any of them says something on this night, there won't be any turning back. Words won't be unheard and unspoken. And he's terrified: because he knows, he's not an idiot, and he knows just how broken and self-destructive they've been lately. And he's frightened that if they finally say the word and cannot go back, this could really be the day everything good between them is lost forever. Because even if they start being officially a couple, even if the love and the sexual chemistry and the immediate and instinctual understanding are amazing and perfect, he knows they're so badly fucked up that they could ruin it. He's sure they'd ruin it.

And that's why this self-sacrificing idiot, once again, is smothering his need and desire and brings everyone with him. As a buffer. To protect Danny and himself from what he's sure would happen without witnesses as buffers.

And it breaks my heart because Danny, given his face during the whole snuggling, probably guessed Steve's intentions...and doesn't even try too hard to stop him. Because he, too, is scared of what could happen otherwise.

Please someone put them into SERIOUS therapy.

I've mostly written for 9-1-1, though I started off with Shameless (6 fics) and I have written some for Teen Wolf (5 fics). There's one 9-1-1 crossover with Schitt's Creek.

Do you respond to comments?

Always, even if it takes me months. I actually just caught up again (there's still a bunch to go, but right now the oldest is 17 days ago instead of 250 days...). It's just a rule I have for myself, and even with the backlog I've kept it up so far, so I'm not going to stop doing it now.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I'm not a big fan of angsty endings, I generally try to at least make it a hopeful ending or, in the case of the college au, use an epilogue to fix things.

But I guess sunny skies & summer highs qualifies as an angsty ending simply because of the cliffhanger (and yes, there is still going to be a continuation, I'm working on it 🙈).

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Choosing one out of 160 is really hard, but I think tell me, will you stay or will you run away is definitely one that deserves a mention here, because it already has a happy ending and then the epilogue just makes it even better 🥰

Do you get hate on fics?

Not commented on the fic itself, no. I've had some people talk shit about my fics on twitter, though, and not even vaguely but calling me by (user)name.

Do you write smut?

Is grass green? Yeah, I write smut 🤭 Thanks to two times kinktober, I have 95 explicit fics, by far the most used rating for my fics.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

My head over feet Buddie valentine's two-parter got posted as one chapter in Wattpad work with over 30 fics once. Filed a DMCA and Wattpad took it down within two hours.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Two of my fics have been translated into Russian afaik, one on ao3 and one on Ficbook

Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Nope. It may be a nice challenge for the future? Not sure who I'd do it with.

All time favourite ship?

Gotta go for Buddie on that one, lol. Especially if you look at my writing history. But I often tend to hyperfixate on one ship at a time (current reading obsession is McDanno)

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Buck's POV of if love is art then you might be my masterpiece. I really want to, but at this point it's been two years since the original so I don't know if it'd be worth it either. (I know not everyone was happy about how I ended it, but I doubt any of them are still waiting for more). Writing a different POV of the same fic takes an amount of planning that my brain just really struggles with. And I could pick up where the last chapter (before the epilogue) picks up, but I think that way there would be some crucial information about Buck missing.

What are your writing strengths?

I've been told quite a lot of times that I am good at keeping characters, well, in character, even when putting them in partial or complete AU's. Of course, what is in character or not is subjective, but I do always challenge myself to work as much of the canon backstory and personality into who they are in the AU as possible.

And I like to think I'm pretty good at writing smut.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm terrible at pacing, which multiple of my long fics prove. It'll be drawn out first and then suddenly rushing. And being ESL I do struggle with things like sentence structure and grammar pretty regularly still.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

As long as there is some kind of translation provided somewhere I like it, but I'm not so quick to use it myself. Not beyond a few Spanish words here and there (generally pet names between Eddie and his family we've seen on the show or the occasional curse word when I feel it fits better than an English one, but I usually need to employ help from Spanish-speaking friends for those).

First fandom you wrote in?

Shameless! I binged that right before I started 9-1-1 and combined with the creative writing minor I was doing, it was actually what got me back into writing in general and what made me write my first ever fic.

Favorite fic you've written?

My in your arms i feel safe-series (which I always lovingly refer to as the ace kink fic) is definitely one of my favorites simply because of how personal it is to me and for the reason behind me writing it in the first place.

Other strong contenders are i would've loved you forever (it's never enough but i wanted it to be) and i'm begging you, come home to me (Teen Wolf, Thiam)

Sorry but these tags by @teruel-a-witch made me laugh so much, because basically Steve dried and fed this angry, feral cat he found soaked and famished on his doorstep, and he's never left him since then, while still hissing at him before purring then biting his hand - but gently and without leaving marks - and then licking it:

And anyway it's exactly like this: they've never been chosen for what or who they are, they've always been deemed too much or too little, they've never been loved for everything they hide inside, so they keep building this perfectly acceptable and perfectly fake persona they both offer to the girlfriend of the moment, have nice times together, have nice sex together, have nice fun together. Keep everything superficial. Keep everything fake. You cannot be hurt if you don't open up, if you don't love. You cannot be smothered in sleep if you never sleep.

Because what is love, I'll say it again, if not handing the other person both your heart and the knife with which they can stab it? And neither Danny nor Steve cannot afford another heart-stab.

After re-watching 7x16, the valentine double date, I feel that Melissa & Lynn were testing Danny and Steve.

I almost think, they were trying to see if it could work as another kind of double date. The girls have more chemistry between them than with their respective boys.

It would have been an interesting way to go, booking the staycation to figure it out.

Even their girlfriends cannot deny the power of McDanno.

ohhhh am i glad you asked!! first of all, thank you?? that makes me so happy to hear – and moving on, yes i've got some more rdr2/mcdanno ideas cooking away.

i've been playing rdr2 nonstop now since i handed in my exam, and let's just say it's taken it's toll on my creativity–

(i may have titled the ideas i've actually started writing and if you think that sound familiar because it's a mission from red dead redemption, both games, then weeeeell you're quite right)

ideas below the cut, let's rumbleeee

📕 – we loved once and true

steve and danny are teenagers, confused and on the run, set somewhere during the 1870s. think the town of valentine, just earlier, and think a storyline that resembles that of dutch and hosea finding john and arthur.

they first meet in a saloon, seeking shelter from the rain. steve's the son of an outlaw and a bounty hunter, a tale that's tragic on its own, and danny's the son of a wealthy family with ideals he considers to be wrong. they spend an afternoon and a night together, dodging drunken fools while waiting for the rain to let up.

finding out they have quite a bit in common, they spend some days together, getting to know one another and falling in love – though this is what terrifies them, because what's a future for two gay teenagers in the wild west?

one morning, about the same time as the sun rises, they part ways, steve heading for the forest where he left his horse, secure and sheltered, while danny heads for the plains, a train, and a future somewhere else.

(the next bit technically works as a we loved once and true II)

five years later they meet again, under another set of unfortunate circumstances. danny's new and better life was in a gang, led by joe white. steve's a man on the run, scarred (physically and mentally) and hardened by a life as a lone wolf. there's a bounty on his head, and he's skittish, his trusted horse the only one he truly trusts.

the gang needs money, and danny's set to lead a little group that does bounty hunting. however, when he sees a poster with steve's name on it, he sets out alone. ain't no way some other fools are gonna put a bullet in steve and earn money from it.

and then yadda yadda, you know how it goes. danny gets steve to trust him, and instead of turning him in, he shows steve the value of a family and introduces him to the gang – though it's not always easy – and so on, and so forth.

writing down this i came to realise i have far too many ideas for this, so oops watch me make an attempt at actually writing this and possibly turning this into a series? god help me

📗 – stranger in a strange land

amnesia!fic but make it the wild west (can you tell i'm a sucker for wounded!steve ending up at danny's ranch one way or another?)

steve's taken a beating. a bad beating. he's got on his horse, and he's got his horse moving, but he passes out long before they get anywhere, and is woken to someone desperately trying to calm down his horse. enter danny, who nearly shot steve's mustang instead of the pronghorn he was hunting, and now heads home with a horse and a wounded man.

he quickly establishes that this stranger's got a bad case of amnesia, that he's taken a beating, and that someone's probably coming for him – to save him or kill him, danny doesn't know.

he keeps him around, let's him heal, helps him through nightmares that show glimpses of what he's been through, and let's the powerhouse of a mustang rest up in the field with his horses.

when the time comes, and someone does come for steve, it's not to kill him (but danny's got his rifle at his side, because he's grown fond of this dumbass stranger who's stuck in what he keeps calling a "strange land"), but to bring him home, but as it turns out, steve returns after only a few days – because he kind of like really enjoyed the quiet and peace of ranching with danny.

📘 – honor, amongst thieves

thief!danny & lawman!steve

danny likes to think of himself as a robin hood type of guy. ever since he got the sole custody of grace, it was what he needed to do – no job was interested in keeping him, no ranch was interested in a farmhand with family ties that could take him away from work, and he wasn't about to risk his life to become a bounty hunter, regardless of how well it would pay him.

so, he steals. he steals, and he gets a criminal record, and he moves them around more often than not.

however, as he comes across a new town, a rustling city more than a dusty town, really, he figures they can stay a while. crime spikes, and his petty little thefts will be overlooked as yet another wanted outlaw is hanged for his crimes. there's a lawman set to work danny's case, though.

steve's the "runt" of the force. he didn't want to become a lawman, yet had no choice, his father forcing him to be a police officer. he gets set to work the lamest cases, and when people start reporting stolen purses, wallets and money clips (among other things), he's set to figure it out. he just didn't expect the thief to be ... well, danny.

📙 – blood feuds, ancient and modern

rival gangs rival gangs rival gangs

romeo and juliet, but make them gay cowboys in rival gangs. shooting at each other at noon, bandaging each other's wounds and kissing at six pm. that's really all there is to this idea at this point.

📚 – lost, and not quite found

freddie and steve had to split up, their best chances of survival being that if they split. steve makes it out alive, freddie doesn't, and steve then decides he's going to make it back to where freddie died, bringing him to a place of peace to bury him.

on the way, one late night, he stumbles across the small camp of a nature photographer, who offers him shelter for the night. steve reluctantly stays (he's just survived being betrayed by a man who once gave him shelter, naturally he's going to be unsure about the offer), and as things would have it, the two really hit it off.

steve leaves, however, in the morning, continuing his mission to give freddie peace, and danny continues his work, gathering photos for an upcoming exhibition. they're not expecting to see each other again – not until danny's been chased around by wolves, and in a desperate attempt to calm his horse down, returns to his old camp, only to find steve there.

he's given freddie peace, he's honoured him, but he can never go back to the life he lived before. danny tells him about the wolves, unsure of why – but when steve offers to help him out, claiming he "knows his way around the wildlife and the woods," it makes sense to danny. and suddenly he had an extra name to credit on the exhibition

and nooow for the two ideas that aren't rdr2 inspired!

📔 – fever pitch

soccer dad!danny and talent scout!steve

charlie's this massive talent on the football (soccer) pitch, and it's no secret to anyone that there are big clubs from all over the world looking to sign him to their academies. steve is the big shot talent scout for one of said big clubs (manchester united), but he's had a bit of a drought on the recruitment side. however, he flies to the us to sit down with charlie (and danny and grace), and gets them to move to england.

at first, danny's negative to the idea, because it's england, and it's away from their family, and moving there means his son is really growing up. however, he's not too happy about this fancy-clad talent scout that came to uproot their lives, and intends on complaining about it to him.

however, steve's traveling a lot, and offers the williams' to stay in his house until they get settled in the city, and when he returns after a business trip late one night – to find danny in his kitchen, tea towel over his shoulder as he's cooking something italian, he's finding it real nice to have company again. and, danny finds it very nice to see that this guy, the fancy talent scout with a shit-ton of money – well, he's not so bad (and he looks really good in cargo pants, not that danny'd ever tell him).

📖 – down by the river avon

because mcdanno au's in england >

danny's a professor. this big shot, amazing professor, that's being headhunted to teach at universities all around the world. for a while he was interested, but when grace was born, it was a no from him, and he stayed put. however, as the university of bath looks to recruit a new professor, they reach out for him – first for a trial year.

he doesn't want to, but grace convinces him he should ("it's a good idea, danno, and i can come visit you when i visit grandma and grandpa in london,"). due to delays in getting his apartment ready, he ends up staying at a nearby hotel, and the pub down by the river becomes his go-to watering hole.

it's a good thing the barkeep is kind of really attractive.

steve's up and left his life in hawaii, after the death of his parents and years as a navy seal that's given him more grief and pain than anything else. now he owns the scuttlebutt, a cosy pub down by the river avon. his customers are mostly regulars, those who come time and time again, regardless of season and weather, but when there's a new guy stumbling in, his interest peaks.

and, as the year progresses, his interest never once dips.

Writing Goals 2023

No specific word count goal.  The goal here is to finish at least one (perhaps two) of my longer wips and then clean up a bunch of other wips to clear the slate for new works. Let’s go with finishing 8 fics this year from this list. This is me putting out goalposts for myself (that hopefully I won’t have to move closer). Please note that word totals are for current chapters only and don’t reflect how much I have written past them. I often am nonlinear in how I write then have to fill-in between scenes.
