Alfie's End of Year Rec List 2023

Out of 447,090 words and 141 total fics, this year I wrote a whole 224k and 78 fics, which is a lot more than last year. I wrote for 10 different ships this year, including 3 new ones. Yay for progress, I guess.

Anyway, to celebrate a rather productive year here at the_oncoming_stormageddon's AO3 dashboard, I've decided to compile a list of all of my favorite fics that I would reccommend :D number three will shock you!

In a shocking turn of events, I lied, sorry. This is about my graphs. It's always about my graphs. All graphs are up to date as of 12/21/2023, and there isn't even a missing word somewhere that has to be accounted for!

(Did I type all of this up, realize I had another fic to post, and then have to go back in and fix everything? ...perhaps)

Anyway. Let's start with Taylor Swift.

As always, "Other" corresponds to fics with titles from other artists, "Non-Album" refers to titles from Taylor Swift songs that aren't on an album or are unreleased, and "None" refers to titles that weren't from any lyrics. Orville Peck and Maisie Peter were the big contributors to the "other" category this year. The second graph shows the percent of the number of fics, while the first graph is the combined word count. Also, I did have 1 fic with an If This Was a Movie title, and I categorized it under "Speak Now TV" instead of Fearless TV. Yell at me about it in the comments if you really care, since it's technically incorrect.

Last year, I had a big Fearless slice because of the Hey Stephen series, and it was kind of surprising to me to see how much I slowed down in doing those, with Fearless only having 4 fics to its name. The disparity between the number and word count of the evermore was a little odd to me, until I realized that my longest fic ever (Tuesday Night at Olive Garden, a destiel murder mystery) was named after an evermore song. One thing that did not surprise me was folklore only having 1 fic, because that is my least favorite album.

So...the destiel thing...

The SPN hyperfixation took hold of me in Feb/March of this year and has not let go yet. Looking at my all-time graphs (where its about 33%/40% destiel/solangelo for word count), I didn't think it was that bad, but plugging in the numbers for just this year...uh, yeah. It's that bad. Sorry.

I had a really strong streak of posting solangelo every month until March hit. Again, destiel hyperfixation in visual form. This year, I wrote lokius (L/MMM, from the show Loki) and sterek (DH/SS, from the show Teen Wolf) for the first time. I also posted destiel (C/DW) for the first time (the bad destiel fics of middle school alfie are staying in locked docs where they belong).

As expected, I had a bit of a drop-off in the summer months, but it was surprising for me to see that it never went back up after school started again. Last year, I had a huge spike in September, October, and December, but this year stayed relatively mellow. Next year, I'd really like to see which trend I follow monthly.

Anyway, that's the end of the graphs I have prepared for you (I will spare yall from the more complicated ones). Next year, I'd really like to start finishing up some of the unresolved fics and series I have (mostly solangelo ones that got drowned in the destiel flood). I'm doing my first ever big bang (for the Professor Layton fandom), so katriana (KL/EP) will make it onto my graphs for next year, as will destiel and solangelo.

Coming in 2023: Hopefully a Buddie Fake Dating AU me and my housemate have slowly been chipping away at. And I have a few more Big Brother Buck ideas I'm hoping to write. (Also the Sterek Last of Us AU that maybe me and my housemate will actually finish at some point)

I THRIVE on events. They've been absolutely integral to my ability to write fic this year, and I'm really proud of what I've done. That said - I absolutely participated in WAY too many. There are a number of fics that I was involved with that don't show up in my ao3 stats and that's okay! I'ma just... list them out akdjhgk

Absolutely the next go around for Sterek Reverse Challenges!!! I love reverse bangs (and bang in general)

If I do the Steter bang again I will not sign up for as many projects because I did too much all at once and it was stressful.

I technically have a massive list of WIPs and Prompts I am constantly working from. I pick the ideas when they feel happy in my brain for "free time" writing - I actually meant to work on the office sex AU for the month of december but got whacked upside the head with Addabge Dmaddiage. UMS was my FIRST "long fic" ever so I am... feeling really, really invigorated.

in 2021 I climbed out of my writing hole where I hadn't written seriously in over a decade. That year, I wrote and shared 22,418 words by myself, and wrote half of a 69,599 (incomplete, part 1) role-play fic with a friend. At the start of 2022, I watched teen wolf for the first time because @sinnabon-cosplay is a menace and can't be stopped. It lit an absolute FIRE beneath me and I lost all control of my life. I started writing and drawing with a wholly renewed fury. I started doing way more events and wrote and posted 40,247 words. At the end of the year, I thought to myself - wow, wouldn't it be cool if i doubled my word count again? 80k? haha, that probably won't happen though. I'll be excited if I write and post 60k.

YALL. I wrote and posted 60k in ONE FIC. I wrote and posted over 120k?????? that's INSANE to me. I haven't had that much drive to create since I was in high school.

Teen Wolf is like... fixing my brain chemistry. I feel so invigorated.

Despite some setbacks with some REALLY unfortunate Sterek fans at the start of my experience here nearly tanking my creative drive, I've managed to stay on track without totally losing my love for the ship because of some rotten eggs. Shoutout to all my homies keeping the space worth hanging around in. I appreciate yall so much <3

Heyyy Anon, I’m going to take a wild guess and think that you mean the Sterek fandom.

I have no plans to return as of now, not as a writer and not as an event mod either. I’ve seen that my seasonal events concept has been, let’s say “adopted” and redone elsewhere. There’s another BB who is self-proclaimed the “OG” so good for them. We had a good run with my events, it was fun while it lasted. But yeah nope, I’m not going to go there anymore. I say that as someone who had the whole Big Bang 2023 planned, all the posts and the whole new discord was ready to go but I’m not here for the drama, I didn’t want to fight for a spot in the schedule, I didn’t want much of any of that, and like, I got blocked by the "OG" mod without ever speaking to him.

Mainly, real life is shit and has been shit for a while and will continue to be shit for a while and I will from now on only go where my heart feels a little lighter. And right now it’s not there in that fandom with these vibes. I do still hold Sterek dear in my heart but if we were in a relationship that's where I'd say I need a break and that break might be unlimited.

Right now i’m finding some happiness again in the content you see me posting here. Maybe it’s because it’s easier to feel satisfied with actual representation and actual lgbtq themed things in the film and shows I chose to engage with.

Maybe it’s because Teen Wolf as canon was a dumpster fire and the only thing worth it was the fandom and the creators who made a new reality for these characters and the sense of community that I had found here but I've lost now. When you get to a point where the fandom who makes the thing great, isn’t where you feel good... well you take a step back and you go where your heart takes you.

Soooo yeah... If you’re only staying in hopes of getting sterek news soon, well, I guess this is your cue to decide whether or not you want to keep following this blog. 2022 Fanfiction Stats

In 2022, I posted 10 stories across 3 fandoms (Grimm, Teen Wolf, and White Collar) for a combined 71,482 words (prior to any further edits).

I participated in Fandom Trumps Hate again, Sterek Artist Seduction Screw, Sterek Reverse Bang, Sterek Big Bang, Sterek Reverse Quickie, and Sterek Secret Santa plus an extra gift for StSS.

I completed Nanowrimo (but not the story itself) as well.

Overall, despite feeling like I didn’t accomplish much, I am pleased with what I did get done.

Looking forward to 2023, I hope to participate in FTH again, a few events, and work on my WIPs.
