Thank you to everyone who checked out Vollema during Next Fest! The amount of wishlists on Steam more than tripled over the past week!
I haven't picked out a specific release date for the full game yet, but as it stands now, it will definitely be ready for launch in early 2025 if not sooner. I'll have more news for you soon!

19th's Steam Next Fest Impressions Feb 2025 Edition - Day 0
It's that time again, where I gorge myself on too many demos. While it starts tomorrow, I found some of them uploaded early. Didn't have the most time this weekend to play them, though, so only three right now:
Is This Seat Taken?
youtube
A perennial problem with puzzle game demos is that they tend to be way too easy, even if it's for understandable reasons. The common puzzle game design wisdom is to have a very gradual slope in complexity, so the choice is to either focus on the start, and have barely any challenge curve, or pull things from across the game, and have the difficulty jump all over the place.
The former is the fate of "Is This Seat Taken?" It's a puzzle game about seating characters across venues, such as a concert or a bus. Each character has certain preferences, such as wanting a window seat, or wanting to be away from people talking or playing music, and the puzzle is to find an arrangement that meets everyone's preferences at once.
It's an intuitive puzzle system, and the pleasant game's visual design, for the most part, gives clear audio-visual feedback. The only exception is rules about which characters are kids and which are adults. The shapes look close enough alike that you need to mouse over to make sure sometimes, or at least I did. The core game design here works.
The only problem is, like I said before, the understandably low difficulty curve. Even the bonus level you get for perfecting all previous levels felt like it was mostly just intuitive trial and error.
There was one puzzle that gave an impression of good potential, though. It was a movie theater level, where you had to seat multiple waves of audiences going to subsequent showings of a movie. One of the conditions involved characters who eat popcorn, and others who want to share popcorn with their neighbor. Once a wave ends, the popcorn eaters leave messy seats, which become another condition that other movie-goers would like to avoid, as the theater gets messier and messier between rounds. It only lasted 3 waves, and in this version was manageable, but it suggested future puzzles where you need to not only account for the immediate puzzle, but future positions, lest you accidentally checkmate yourself.
Of course, that's if the devs want to get "mean" at any point, which is up in the air. This title is part of the Wholesome Games label, one that I don't necessarily dislike. I've played good games from this "movement", but a lot of them tend to not push mechanical depth, either to facilitate a more relaxed experience, or because a major intended demographic is children. The tone does feel mildly cloying, but not horrendously so. Still, like what I have seen so far.
Later
youtube
It's important to keep a sense of a game's scope when critiquing it, keeping expectations in check and avoiding being unfair. This is a game that so far is restricted to a few rooms. I'm being descriptive, not insulting, when I say that there's not much to Later, at least so far.
It comes across like those newgrounds escape room games, where you would rotate around a single space and find objects to solve puzzles. Despite this form, Later doesn't have much by way of active puzzles, so it comes across as more of a hidden object game. Object Singular.
You play as an owner of a messy home. With seemingly not much to do, as you spend most of your time playing hide and seek with a cute mascot thing. Even when you have other things to do, like responding to worried texts from your mom, he keeps pushing to play, until things get mildly unsettling.
Yes, this seems to be the classic of "indie game as metaphor for depression/anxiety/illness," where the cute character is a stand in for whatever force is keeping the protagonist from getting anything done. While it feels mildly cliche, the art direction/visual design is strong enough that I'm not writing it off completely. If nothing else it should be a good showcase of their artist/animator's abilities.
I do wish it didn't return to the well of "using obesity as a metaphor for purposes of unsettling the viewer" though.
Promise Mascot Agency
youtube
I was a massive fan of Kaizen Game Works' previous title, Paradise Killer, and my eyes have been glued to their next title, Promise Mascot Agency.
The game takes place in a world where big goofy mascot characters aren't people in suits, but supernatural beings who represent wider concepts and have walked alongside humanity since the dawn of history. They still mostly make their living from doing advertising, though.
You play as Michi, a disgraced yakuza, who, after choosing to save a fellow member of the family over protecting 12 billion yen, is sent to the backwater town of Kaso-Machi, and take over its destitute mascot agency to return the money.
The game is split into two parts: exploration and running the business. The former is Kaizen's bread and butter, and their skill is still on display here. Kaso-Machi feels just as vibrant and well lived in as the 24th Island Sequence in Paradise Killer, possibly even more so. The vibes and music are still top notch. The main complaint is that said exploration is primarily done from a car, which feels less intuitive to me compared to the on foot exploration in their previous game.
The second half, I have less to say about. It was an 80-minute long timed demo, after all, so I couldn't go in-depth. You explore the game to find mascots, assistants, and jobs. From there, you need to manage their stats, send them to events, and play a card minigame when a performance goes wrong. It feels like there's going to be plenty of depth, with upgrade systems, stamina management, matching mascot types to events, and even implying individual character stories as you improve each one, but there wasn't enough time to really dig my teeth into it.
I will say that the character writing so far has been stellar especially the relationship between Michi and his partner Pinky, the severed finger mascot. They have a straight man/chaos goblin (dev's words, not mine) dynamic that, in the wrong hands could easily be annoying, but KGW rides the line beautifully. Pinky's chaotic tendencies aren't just wackiness for the sake of wackiness, but an understandable response to living abandoned and bored in a completely dead-end town. Michi isn't just a tut-tutting board to exasperatedly play off of her antics, but a character with a good texture of his own: He's the classic "gangster with a heart of gold and a fierce sense of loyalty," and is nothing bus supportive of his employees, yet seems completely unbothered and unashamed of his past life as a violent debt collector. He encourages a cat mascot to follow his passion for pornography with the same tone you would support someone getting their dream degree. Double points for the game's excellent voice cast.

Today we reach a nice milestone here at GleeMill, we got our latest demo build approved for release on Steam! We are going to wait until 13:th of September (yeah, it's a Friday) to push the big green button. But knowing it's only a click away gives us great joy and anticipation to let the public test out our little silly racing game.
Make sure to give it a nice little wishlist to get notified when we release the demo, and we're aiming to release the final game the following Friday the 13:th, so really getting up on the final lap of development.
We are also joining the October Next Fest, so hopefully we will be able to get a bit of reach for the game before it's time to do the big release. Right now we are bellow 200 wishlists, and with the current recommendations of having 7000 at release we don't see that the game will be a instant hit. But "luckily" for us we are knee-deep in day-jobs, so no worries there. Making games is a passion, and we don't expect it to be our main source of income until at least our 3-4'th release, and CARnage being our first title we still have ways to go before that will be a reality.
That said we've already got a pretty good idea on what we want to do for our second title, taking quite a step away from racing and trying our hands on a TD title! But we will wait a while after the CARnage release before starting on that one.
We have been working on CARnage for soon 3 years, so a little vacation will be in order come 2025 so that we can recharge our batteries for the next title. We will try to keep the scope a bit smaller as we like to keep it within 1-2 years this time around.
Anyways, a bit of a rant today, but we're excited to finally get the game into your hands and get your feedback on our little passion project for the last years! We hope you are as excited as us and we'll probably post a update when the demo is up and running!
Cheerioz!

The latest Monster Hunter Wilds trailer, “The Hunter’s Journey,” gave Summer Game Fest live stream viewers a deeper look at the Hunter’s foray into the Forbidden Lands, including the colorful characters and a mysterious crescent-shaped mountain players will encounter as story moments seamlessly blend into gameplay. As the hunter delves deeper into unknown territory, local wildlife including the treacherous new Balahara Leviathan monster demonstrated how hunters must adapt and harness new techniques to coexist in the Windward Plains region’s volatile conditions. In the ferocious lightning storms that herald a change between the harsh dry season and abundant monsoon season, an even greater threat was glimpsed bolting behind the billowing sand clouds.
Cross-Play and Next Trailer
Monster Hunter series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto joined Geoff Keighley on stage to confirm Monster Hunter Wilds will support crossplay across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Please visit the official site for more information. Tsujimoto also notified fans eagerly awaiting the highly anticipated title’s 2025 release that Capcom will debut its next trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live, and Monster Hunter Wilds will be playable for the first time on the Gamescom 2024 show floor.
The Wild Beauty of the Windward Plains
While traversing the sandy dunes of the Windward Plains, hunters and local wildlife alike must be cautious of falling victim to the quicksand traps of the newly revealed Balahara. The Forbidden Lands play host to multiple packs of large monsters such as the Balahara, who can be seen in the trailer tracking and overwhelming the previously announced Doshaguma. These Leviathans secrete mucus along their serpentine bodies to deftly maneuver through the earth, hurl attacks at their foes, and create pitfall traps capable of shifting the sands of battle in their favor. As these formidable monsters seek to scrape out a niche within this harsh ecosystem, territorial disputes with other large monsters can erupt at a moment’s notice. Hidden within the region’s frequent sandstorms, a mysterious apex predator lurks, waiting to shock its prey with an electric fury.
A Seamless World of Extremes
Monster Hunter Wilds seamlessly flows from story sequences to gameplay to tell the dynamic and engrossing story of the hunter leading the Forbidden Lands Research Commission as they explore vibrant ecosystems filled with monsters and extreme environments. After stepping off their ship headed for the Windward Plains, hunters begin to unravel the many mysteries contained within Forbidden Lands, such as the massive crescent-shaped mountain dominating the landscape. That journey will compel players to team up with other Hunters to discover the relationship between this world and the people who inhabit it, standing shoulder to shoulder against new and fearsome foes.
Playable at Gamescom 2024
More information regarding Monster Hunter Wilds will be revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, alongside the title’s first playable demo on the Gamescom 2024 show floor.

Thess vs The Last Demos
Yeah, I skipped a movie, but this title makes more sense given that these are the last of the Steam Next Fest demos I picked up.
Artist Life Simulator - This is a card game in the style of Book of Hours, sort of. You're building a reputation as a painter, with all sorts of various cards to denote feelings, actions, inspirations, etc. It's not exactly Zen, since it requires a fair bit of thought to figure out next steps, but it's definitely interesting.
30 Birds - This one's a little hard to describe. It's sort of a puzzler, sort of a rhythm game, sort of interactive story... The art style is gorgeous and they took a very unique approach to area traversal and ... I guess background is the way to put it. It's another one where I got to the end of the demo and was very disappointed because I wanted more game, and honestly, any game that does anything that unique probably deserves to be talked up.
Death and Taxes - basically, take Papers, Please, and make it both more and less grim at the same time? Also easier to figure out what you're doing, and at least in the early stages of the demo, no time limit. You're basically a Grim Reaper who's deciding who lives and who dies based on dossiers that get faxed to you. There are obviously consequences for not fulfilling quota, or not fulfilling it properly (or just going berserk and marking everyone for death), and getting those updates on your phone at the start of a new day is interesting.
Hollow Cocoon - Yeah, I had a feeling this one was going to be a nope right away. Got mentioned because Silent Hill 2, but is first person and there's a lot of bounce when you walk (worse yet when you run) and I had to turn it off after several seconds. Which is a shame, because gaki felt like my jam, but ... eh. The number of games I had to skip demos for because first person or roguelike or ARPG was staggering. You think I have a lot of demos now? Imagine if I wasn't disabled. Anyway, probably worth checking out but I cannot.
Plot Twist - I was doing these in more or less alphabetical order, but this demo has been updated three times today so I figured I'd get it done now because the updating is just getting annoying. It's an interesting sort of writing-career simulator, and I like it more than I expected to. Another one where I got to the end and went, "Nooooooo!" So I guess it goes high up on the wishlist. Amazing the demo's getting that many updates when its release date is Q1 2025...
LightBreak - Musical puzzle game ... and not-so-musical puzzle game. Fair bit of messing with the set dressing. It's a "Coming Soon", and looks like a nice little Zen thing, but not a priority the way some of the others are.
Lore Restore - Another code-words thing in the style of Prose and Codes, but you can never have too many of those.
Magic Inn - Looks cute, as another eatery management sim, but the keyboard refused to work. Soooooo I can probably live without it, given how many games like that I already have on the wishlist, and I liked Critter Cafe better anyway.
Pilo and the Holobook - This one's more my jam than I thought. I'm a sucker for games where I can collect stuff, and this one's all about that. Basically you're this adorable little fox dude who's apprenticing for a scientist, scanning things in a holobook to get stickers as a research aid. And of course its release date is To Be Announced, even if I kind of want it now. Then again, there are enough games that I want Right This Second Now that come out in November that I should probably be grateful.
A Stranded Spark - Well, if the person who made this game wanted it to be played, maybe they should have had the demo actually do something other than talk to people who are not interested in talking back and attempting to interact with things that do nothing. I don't know what this game is about beyond being cute and some wonky-ass camera angles, but I think I'll pass.
Sword and Seek - Hidden object game with added "messing with the set dressing" mechanics. That's another one where I got to the end of the demo and went, "Noooooooooooooo!" I seem to have saved the best ones for last.
Welp, that's the autumn Next Fest for this year, anyway. Surprisingly few duds - but then, I've generally got a good grasp of what I shouldn't even be trying to download or demo at this point. I'm definitely going to have to whittle down the wish list, though, because that list is nuts. I mean, okay, about 70 of them aren't even out yet, and a few are DLC, but still.
Right. This has been a moderately relaxing day. I do love the Next Fest, I have to say. Not that I don't excavate demos from Steam normally. Just having that focus on them makes it easier. Now I should contemplate dinner and probably descale the kettle. You know, adulting stuff. To make up for the fact that I spent a fair bit of the day asleep and then more of it playing video game demos in my pyjamas.

19th's Steam Next Fest Impressions Feb 2025 Edition - Day 1
Day 0
Played some demos today, but I was worn out enough that I don't feel fully confident in the actual writing of the impressions. Whatever though.
Monster Train 2
youtube
Aside from its floor system, the most unique and fun part of the original Monster Train was the fact that each run had the player choose two factions, like mixed color decks in Magic. I can't really gauge how it plays out here, because they only give you two factions here, no room to mix and match. Expected for a demo, but mildly frustrating.
They've added more to this game. the previous one was mostly "play cards and spells, then let character abilities and combat automatically play out." Here some units will have abilities that can be manually activated, with turn based cooldowns. You can now spend equipment on unit cards. You have floor cards that give special effects to individual floors. They've upped the complexity, but in my short time playing… It feels a lot less elegant. My mind might change as I get to grips with it, though.
Last one is that they're making this one more plotty. More characters with dialogue and character interactions between runs. And I can't really comment on it so far but… I don't think Monster Train needed this.
Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3
youtube
Apparently this game has been a long running gag for Strange Scaffold, devs of El Paso Elsewhere, I Am Your Beast, and Clickholding. I am out of the loop of this specific joke though.
The game is a very loose parody of resident evil and survival horror games in general, in the form of a match 3 game. You come across a variety of obstacles, and each one you play a puzzle board to get resources to use skills to solve said obstacles. An interesting wrinkle is that after you make a match, whatever you're fighting gets a chance to match-3, so you not only need to get the symbols you need, but also try to starve out your opponent from getting the symbols they need. It also makes it harder to pull off multi-turn setups.
In between the match 3 matches is a simple text based exploration system, CYOA into different rooms and make different choices. Certain choices will unlock traits that will make new choices available in previous areas, so the devs call it a metroidvania even though it's…not. that?
Anyways, the team apparently has made a name for itself with it's writing, haven't played much of their output, but. That isn't on display here yet. Early on after dying once the protagonist realizes he's in a video game and a buggy as fuck one. And from there all the humor is gamer webcomic "isn't video game logic wacky" humor. The ability to go back with new traits is the protag exploring with "debug mode" on.
There is some mild intrigue with the very end of the demo, though, with the swerve that the protag learns his game is buggy because… it was cancelled. There's nothing for him anymore. And you could possibly go somewhere with that. I just hope they do so with a better set of jokes.
Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved
youtube
Before anything else, I gotta say that I'm really digging this game's aesthetic. With it's chunky but detailed and expressive character sprites, but backrounds made with explicitly lower detail 3D, it screams original DS.
The interaction is the basic ADV-style "look at background to get bits of info and then run through every dialogue option with every character" that you get with phoenix wright investigation sections.
The plot of the game sounds interesting. During a cross country train ride, a woman disappears, and the protag and assistant duo seem to be the only ones who remember she actually existed. The plot of the demo… isn't much there. You don't even get on the train.
There is some intrigue. The game opening up with a man falling from a 5th story hotel room (and your player character getting falsely accused by the comic relief incompetent cop because he mixed up rooms 105 and 501). There's some fun interactions, like the eccentric detective letting tourists poke around a crime scene while all the other officers are sick of his shit or your weirdly excited co-traveler diving too enthusiastically into the opportunity, and it's all held up by great spritework, but you don't really get to solve anything.
So far, it's a game that runs solely on vibes. But the vibes are excellent.
Isopod
youtube
Like webbed before it, this game is a physics platformer starring realistic yet cute bugs in Australia. The biggest shifts are the move from 2d to 3d, and the inexplicable extra power moving from a laser to magnet powers.
The magnet is an equal parts blessing and curse. The name of the game is momentum, and aside from slopes the main tool to do this is using magnetic pull. When it works its incredible. But the game auto-targets what you're magnetizing to, and if you misjudge it, the closest magnet being behind you, you're whipped backwards and your momentum is killed. I'm not sure if it's a system issue or a skill issue.
I was frustrated with the demo's Koopa-the-Quick style race. The game asks you to run through gates, but their hitbox is relatively unforgiving, it's too easy to slip passed it when your momentum is high.
I wasn't able to finish this one due to time. I may revisit it, but for now I'll leave it as: Less intuitive than Webbed, but more potential. May need some polishing.
