Three days since Help Wanted 2’s SteamDB page updated.. Again.

I guess expect only the Switch port at this point and more shipping done for the flat mode/Steam version around that time? At least we’re getting something for this game again.

SteamDB data for FFXIV and GW2

Obviously the numbers are unreliable given both have minority populations on Steam (especially GW2, considering it launched a decade before coming to Steam), but it's interesting to compare the player trends.

FFXIV is all about an expansion launch story spike, then an immediate cliff.

You literally can´t even see where the SotO and JW launches are in GW2's chart. People who are playing it just keep playing it.

I don´t really play WoW, but it kind of looks like a hybrid between the two. There are definitely noticeable expansion launch spikes, but you still could draw a fairly accurate line of best fit through it and not lose too much.

A chart (unsure how accurate) I found of Runescape player data which also seems to be fairly flat.

I tried finding data for FFXI Horizon (HorizonXI), the other MMORPG that I actually play, but could only find a 24 hour player count. Sadge. Not sure there would be any insights there anyway, since we've yet to see the first real expansion.

I'm not really sure there are any meaningful take-aways here with unreliable and somewhat incomparable data. More, I'm a little surprised at how much of an outlier FFXIV is in this regard. I wonder if the boom-bust cycle is going to bite them in the patoot as time goes on, or if it'll prove to be something that other games try to copy.

Small update to the HW2 SteamDB thing: The depots have finally updated, but it’s still just shipping. Which is good, mind you, but it makes me go “hmmm”.

I am legit starting to wonder if Steel Wool’s going to shadowdrop whatever this is after that Twitter pumpkin contest. Like as soon as the winners are announced, they’re going to wait an hour or so and be like “oh we’re not done just yet ;]”.
