An excerpt from the slowest writer on earth. Who is grinding out this long WIP one overwritten paragraph at a time 💪🏻 Sharing is so vulnerable!

Draco turned to face Harry. Harry did the same.

“Don’t look at me like that,” Draco whispered, a hint of vulnerability seeping through. Harry could feel it ache in his chest.

He didn’t know what the look on his own face betrayed; maybe Draco thought it was pity. But Harry thought it might be closer to the look of a man who knew with absolute certainty in that moment that he was fucked. He couldn’t help but let his eyes roam over Draco’s face as he took him in fully, standing face to face. The flickering picture lights bounced the saturated colours from the painting Draco stood next to onto his pale skin, highlighting his sharp angles and dipping into his hollow, concave shadows.

“You know, I’ve never seen you outside of London,” Harry mussed as his eyes roamed, as if Draco himself were a newly unearthed classical portrait to be appreciated for the first time.

“You haven’t seen me in almost a decade.” Draco unfolded his sleek black coat from his arm and pulled it on. The collar stood high and stiff on his neck, elegant and impenetrable, softened only by the plaid cashmere scarf he layered. The scarf’s varying shades of grey brought out his silver, midnight-misty eyes and made them more poignant. Harry realised then that they were a singular colour that he had never witnessed on anyone else. “Do you find I’m easier to tolerate on foreign soil?”

“Draco, I think I can help you–”

“Help me?” Draco scoffed. “There’s a reason people go untraceable, Potter. You shouldn’t have even been able to find me in the first place.”

“I also shouldn’t have been able to defeat Voldemort,” Harry responded calmly without missing a beat. Draco didn’t flinch at the name, which was at least refreshing. “Or be one of the few known Wizards in history to have resisted a powerful Imperius Curse before I even finished puberty. Or mastered the complex nature of wandless magic by eighteen. Or have an eight-year-long seamless Curse Breaking record, never once having broken my hold over volatile dark magic, but here we are.”

Something flashed in Draco’s eyes. He opened his mouth to say something. Harry had no doubt that he was about to be on the receiving end of a scathing retort to what Draco had probably perceived as Harry’s inflated ego, in need of being brought down a few notches. He had just simply stated the facts though, and that had been the shortlist.

Instead, Draco frowned, put his head down, and withdrew a pair of black leather gloves from his coat pocket. Harry watched, transfixed by Draco’s refined hands gripping the supple material. Even Draco’s veined knuckles somehow managed to be attractive. A single onyx-stoned gold ring was the only thing that disrupted the slender lines of his fingers, catching Harry’s attention like an alarm and bringing him back to the moment.

“Why did you go untraceable, Draco?”

“To be left alone.” His voice was flat as he carefully pulled on his gloves. “I thought that should have been pretty obvious, even to you. But if it wasn’t, it is now. And it might be a hard concept for you to grasp, but you need to respect that.” He dropped his hands by his side and turned to walk away.

“Go back to London, Potter,” he added without turning back; his long strides had already taken him halfway down the corridor, his voice echoing in the cavernous room behind him.

“But I’ve already booked my stay,” Harry called after him.

Harry stood and watched Draco’s tall, stark figure disappear like a phantom through the museum’s back doors into the frigid January afternoon.

Lavender

For @jtimu, who finished painting. <3 Lots of gratitude to @starquestingfordrarry, who indulged me greatly in the doc.

For the curious reader, the following is kinky but not particularly sexual. For more tags, check out AO3. Enjoy!

Today is an exciting day. After months of Harry’s patient waiting, Draco’d agreed they would move into Grimmauld together, and today Harry gets to pick the color of the new bedroom—except, not really.

Draco’s set the paint chips out in a pattern on the bed, and he’s set Harry up near the headboard with lavender being, naturally, the farthest option. Lavender is also the only option. Draco loves how it brings out Harry’s eyes, contrasts with his skin. Draco had chosen lavender sheets at the apartment.

But this isn’t the apartment, this is a blank slate, this is their home. Harry shivers.

The weight of the collar becomes more apparent to him as he imagines crawling all the way to that far corner where the lavender chip teeters right on the edge of the mattress. He shivers again.

He leans forward onto hands and knees and begins to crawl. The fine, cool chain falls slack against his bare flank.

A red paint chip—Gryffindor red—slides against his knuckles where they depress the mattress. He nearly laughs at the idea. He wouldn’t be able to sit for a fortnight.

“Please read the names to me so I know you’re paying attention,” Draco says from his wide stance at the end of the bed.

Harry glances down and does smile this time. “Righteous Red.” Harry watches a deep, royal purple—“Aubergine”—and a sage green—“Artichoke”—go by before the pressure starts. The comforting weight of a grey stare is light on his shoulders; he’d paint the walls that exact shade, were he to choose.

He crawls past beigy, boring “sandstone.”

Too-light “parchment.”

Bright blue “cerulean sea.” Dark blue, possibly—

“Navy,” he bites out. He no longer has time to read carefully, can barely bend his head down to look—

“That’s a good pet. Almost there.” Pride tingles down his neck. He tries to swallow. Can’t.

His face feels warm, swollen, his head stuffy and not quite connected to the hand he sees stretch out and pluck the lavender chip from its precarious position. He sags back, all the way back, directed by the pull of the chain, and feels the poke of cards under his back, fresh air bright in his lungs, the proper flow of blood ringing happily through his veins.

He brings the chip to his face, breathing hard. “Euphoric Lavender,” he laughs. Draco, smirking, joins him on the bed, on his side, head propped on one hand, fingers of the other tracing cool lines across Harry’s chest, around the warm skin under his collar.

“Excellent choice, darling,” Draco says.

Harry rolls his eyes. “That’s a stupid name for a paint color. I can’t believe you picked it.”

“It’s perfect. Think how gorgeous you’ll look sprawled out and euphoric, surrounded by lavender.”

Harry doesn’t let himself think about the decision, about anything other than euphoric lavender, and sends his magic out in a purple-feeling gust, hoping for the best. Biting his cheek against the giggles bubbling up against his collar, he watches Draco’s eyes widen as he looks around the room. Harry waits for a reaction.

“Eager?”

“‘Sprawled out and euphoric’ sounded nice.”

When he smiles, Draco’s teeth are as white as the walls used to be. “I’ll see what I can do.”

It is also so very bright and clear in my mind; the visuals are so affecting, just like the creations that Harry weaves. Favorite scene: Harry casually chatting with dragons. 12/10 would be unhinged again.)

(I’m not a big crier over fics. Maybe three or four have made me cry this year. This one made me lose it. I think the thing that stands out to me is the visceral capture of emotion. You can feel Draco’s broken heart, and then you can feel Harry’s. I could probably get worked up about it right now. Favorite scene: Draco crying over the broken tea cup. I literally can’t function when I think about it. 12/10 would cry again.)

(I might be cheating since I’m still savoring The Brightest Constellation of Our Souls but I’m including it because it is Peak Drarry Romance. TheCouchSofa always has this intensely brilliant characterization. Harry is heartbreakingly oblivious. Draco is prickly and about as subtle as a brick over pining for Harry. This also features depression!Harry, which has gotta be one of my favorite Harrys. She writes depressed Harry with such delicacy, handling the ins and outs of mental illness and trauma with care, but also making it fucking funny. Favorite scene so far: Harry very casually slipping into conversation that he’s bisexual after he’s been traveling with Draco for an absurd amount of time without mentioning it. And Draco’s ensuing reaction. 12/10 will continue swooning.)

He leaned in and kissed Harry on the lips.

(Never Mind the Bollocks is a new fic from Erised 2023. I loved every moment of it, and Harry having so much fun and feeling like he belonged was everything. However, his drive to right and save all was still there. Chapter 18 brought it all together. I won't say how as the fic is so new, but, for me, it was so romantic with BAMF Harry showing up and Draco trying to be mad. Complete chef's kiss.)

(Told through jumps between the past and the present, I adore the way toomuchplor depicts the everyday romance of an established relationship. Too often romance is delegated to big displays of affection, when I think much of romance is in the mundane, routine moments. Listening to your partner share about their day is romantic. Making routine breakfast and coffee is romantic. The intimacy of having an ongoing inside joke about a cat name is unbearably romantic to me. These are the small, everyday moments that the foundations of grand romances are built upon, and this fic was a love note to those moments.)

(it's a classic H/D fic that preserves Draco's prickly personality while still showing him reforming in a very realistic way. It's a slow-burn—Harry isn't really in the first half at all, and when he does show up he's still very suspicious of Draco—but as Draco shows his (new) true colors, Harry can't help that his suspicions turn to curiosity (one of my favorite tropes with reformed Draco fics) especially with the somewhat forced proximity they find themselves in that slowly turns into voluntary and frequent proximity. To me, maybe because of the slow burn, it seems like a very realistic depiction of how Draco could reform himself and how Harry can turn his suspicions into curiosity and eventually more to form a healthy relationship together.)
