DS9: "The House of Quark"
A drunkard named Kozak gets himself killed in Quark's bar. After Quark claims to have killed the Klingon in self-defense, Kozak's widow Grilka marries him to solidify her control of the estate. Meanwhile, Chief O'Brien struggles to help his wife Keiko after she closes Deep Space Nine's school.
This is debatably a Ferengi episode, since so much of it is about Quark and Rom and their problems are played for laughs. But usually Ferengi episodes are all about problems caused by quirks of Ferengi culture, so the Klingon angle here just hits different. If you're looking for a distinction between a Quark episode and a Ferengi episode starring Quark, that'll have to do.
The gimmick here is that Quark doesn't understand anything about the Klingon rules and rituals that have dragged him into this mess, even after it's explained to him. Pulling that off in 1994 is no small feat. After seven years of Star Trek: The Next Generation, we're used to seeing this world through Lieutenant Worf's eyes, and he made it make sense to us. So making it feel confusing and inconsistent without contradicting the existing lore is pretty impressive. Of course, it helps that the Klingon code of honor is full of loopholes that give cover to Kozak's sinister brother D'Ghor.
The common theme between the A and B plots are that business on the station has dried up because everyone is afraid of a Dominion attack coming through the wormhole. It's an interesting change in direction from the previous two seasons, but there's no follow-up; the station is clearly bustling with activity within a few episodes. The only lasting development is that Keiko's school will never re-open.
Keiko started DS9's school in part to give herself something to do, since the station didn't need a botanist. On TNG she worked in the Enterprise aboretum, but now we're told that she could never be happy doing that same job on DS9. Plan B, then, is for Keiko to join a scientific expedition on Bajor, which is great, but why didn't anyone suggest that in the first place, before she even started the school? It's as if the O'Briens had to wait for the showrunners to get the school business out of their system.

The Jem’Hardar are so interesting. Every time we linger on them it’s like we see the beginnings of a culture forming. Only to have it immediately crushed because all of them are killed.
The Jem’Hardar have so much potential. I hope more is done with their species than just being bad guys.

T’ler: “Your attitude is unhelpful, Ro Laren.” [ST#11, pt. 1]
🚀 NOTE: the ship, the Kobayashi Maru, is a training exercise simulation that all Federation cadets face in Starfleet Academy — it depicts a no-win scenario. Introduced to canon via the film, Star Trekk II: The Wrath of Khan.

Thanks for playing! Here's the summary (long post incoming)
[Image description: A 32-entry tournament bracket in black and red titled "Tumblr's most hated." It is a visual representation of the summary described below. Notably, Ross as the "winner" is wearing a Burger King paper crown, and Walter White and Mort as revival contestants have steel chairs edited in next to them. End ID]
First round summary with bracket links (see the individual posts for vote counts, percentages, and comments):
Vriska Serket (Homestuck) vs. Pearl (Steven Universe); Vriska won
Rex (Victorious) vs. Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty); Rick won
Ansem the Wise (Kingdom Hearts) vs. Gul Dukat (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine); Ansem TW won
Kylo Ren (Star Wars) vs. Kokichi Ouma (Danganronpa); Kylo won
Scrappy Doo (Scooby-Doo) vs. Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory); Sheldon won
Pierre (Stardew Valley) vs. Mort (Madagascar); Pierre won
Seraphine (League of Legends) vs. Heimskr (Skyrim); Heimskr won
Jurgen Leitner (The Magnus Archives) vs. Andre Glacier (Miraculous Ladybug); Andre won
Walter White (Breaking Bad) vs. Light Yagami (Death Note); Light won
Buck Cluck (Chicken Little) vs. Ross Geller (Friends); Ross won
Bramblestar (Warriors) vs. Starlight Glimmer (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic); Bramblestar won
Goro Akechi (Persona 5) vs. Pariston Hill (Hunter x Hunter); Pariston won
Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia) vs. Berdly (Deltarune); Katsuki won
Angel Dust (Hazbin Hotel) vs. The Impostor (Among Us); Angel won
Olaf (Frozen) vs. Hooty (The Owl House); Olaf won
Zenos viator Galvus (Final Fantasy XIV) vs. Tony Stark (Marvel Cinematic Universe); Tony won
In the second round, I brought back Walter and Mort because they lost by slim margins in the first round. Here's the summary:
Vriska Serket (Homestuck) vs. Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty); Rick won
Ansem the Wise (Kingdom Hearts) vs. Kylo Ren (Star Wars); Kylo won
Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) vs. Pierre (Stardew Valley); Sheldon won
Heimskr (Skyrim) vs. Andre Glacier (Miraculous Ladybug) vs. Walter White (Breaking Bad); Andre won
Light Yagami (Death Note) vs. Ross Geller (Friends); Ross won
Bramblestar (Warriors) vs. Pariston Hill (Hunter x Hunter) vs. Mort (Madagascar); Mort won
Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia) vs. Angel Dust (Hazbin Hotel); Angel won
Olaf (Frozen) vs. Tony Stark (Marvel Cinematic Universe); Tony won
Round 3 was when I got marked as spam and shadowbanned (I know it wasn't actually a "shadowban," but that's the term) so there were less votes overall in this round. But I don't think redoing the round would have altered the results, and they still got over 1k votes each.
Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty) vs. Kylo Ren (Star Wars); Kylo won
Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) vs. Andre Glacier (Miraculous Ladybug); Sheldon won
Ross Geller (Friends) vs. Mort (Madagascar); Ross won
Angel Dust (Hazbin Hotel) vs. Tony Stark (Marvel Cinematic Universe); Tony won
In the semifinals we were down to four live-action white dudes which I find kind of sums up what kind of character people on tumblr hate on its own. These were a week long because I was still shadowbanned but I think I got my blog restored partway through this round.
Kylo Ren (Star Wars) vs. Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory); Sheldon won
Ross Geller (Friends) vs. Tony Stark (Marvel Cinematic Universe); Ross won
And then there were two, and I did my best to create art for the finals so please check it out in the link.
Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) vs. Ross Geller (Friends)
Ross won. It wasn't even that close. So as promised, he was publicly executed. In Skyrim. Because what else would it be.
Personally I never watched Friends so Ross sweeping was not what I expected lol. There were some characters I put on opposite ends of the bracket because I thought the finals would be Vriska vs. Bakugo or Kylo vs. Tony or something like that. But it turns out people really hate annoying sitcom dudes, at least from the sample size that voted in this poll.
I'm doing another tournament soon and I'm currently taking nominations so please check out @youngersiblingstournament if you're interested :) thanks for playing!

Top five pairings!
BLESS YOU for giving me an excuse to post about my Blorbos. 😍🥺🙏 You have my eternal love and gratitude. I know I write mostly Reader fic, but that is a very recent development in nearly 3 decades of fandom and shipping (and mostly due to my need for adoration of Andy Serkis). I am, at my heart, a hopeless romantic that loves good chemistry and potential and yearning and angst and two idiots finding each other in spite of everything.
That being said, this was SO GODDAMNED HARD, HOLY SHIT!! 😭 I went with my current Top 5 because narrowing it down was too much. And I'm sure I missed something obvious because my brain is a scrampled egg sitting inside of a metal colander.
💚🩵 QuiObi
(Qui-Gon Jinn x Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars)
***This is actually one I had in the 2000s, but the brain rot returned with a *vengeance* when I went to see the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace in theaters. I am even writing fic for it for the first time.
💜🩶 Starbreaker
(Jace Stardiamond x Porter Cliffbreaker, Dimension 20: Fantasy High Junior Year)
🧡💜 Shadowgast
(Caleb Widogast x Essek Thelyss, Critical Role: Campaign 2)
🩵💚 Dorym
(Dorian Storm x Orym of the Air Ashari, Critical Role: Campaign 3)
💚🤎 Lokius
(Loki x Mobius, Loki)
And now is the part where I fuckin cheat 😈😇
✨ Top 5 going back to ~1997
- MSR (Fox Mulder x Dana Scully, The X-Files)
- SanSan (Sandor Clegane "The Hound" x Sansa Stark, ASoIaF/Game of Thrones)
- Janeway x Chakotay (Star Trek: Voyager)
- Buffy x Giles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
- Jaime x Brienne (ASoIaF/Game of Thrones)
✨ Top 5 slash going back to ~1997
- Aralas (Aragorn x Legolas, The Lord of the Rings)
- Hannigram (Will Graham x Hannibal Lecter, Hannibal)
- Aaron Hotchner x Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds)
- Gashir (Elim Garak x Julian Bashir, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) (bonus Spirk mention, but that's just a given if you're a Trekkie)
- Stony (Steve Rogers x Tony Stark, Marvel)
Dang that's a lot of slash. 😅 I swear I have other ships! Like VillainEve (Villainelle x Eve from Killing Eve), J7 (Janeway x Seven in Star Trek: Voyager), Imodna (Imogen x Laudna, Critical Role Campaign 3), and Eyk x Maura (1899). ((LOOK AT ME CHEATING SOME MORE 😌))
#asks#anon#tara's top five#thank you 💖#i wanted to include halsin x tav and charon x lone wanderer#but i feel like rpgs like that are sort of reader fic adjacent#because they're so customizable#this is a SHAME FREE ZONE#i apologize for nothing#laughing that two fifths of my ships have a character played by liam o'brien#quiobi#starbreaker#shadowgast#dorym#lokius

Happy Father’s Day!!!
To celebrate, here are some of my favorite fictional dads with their children! Fathers’ names are in blue, kids’ names are in green.
Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger (Star Wars Rebels)
Shellington and Tunip (Octonauts)
Eva Nine and Rovender Kitt (The Search for WondLa)
Benjamin and Jake Sisko (Star Trek Deep Space Nine)
Tony Stark and Peter Parker (MCU)
Scott and Cassie Lang (MCU, Ant-Man trilogy)
Data and Lal (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Looker and Emma (Pokémon XY)
Tweak and Ranger Marsh (Octonauts)
And finally, Peso and Captain Barnacles!
Most of these characters are found family— only three pairs shown here are related by blood. But that doesn’t make the adopted fathers and children any less of families.
So, go forth and celebrate your own fathers, and if you don’t have one, go forth and celebrate the people you look up to!
Also: Jumping jellyfish, I reached the tag limit with this post!

Disabled Characters in the Showdown Currently
Notes:
1.) This list is subject to change, so if you see it off a reblog, please check the link to this post here. At some point this will probably stop updating, as we tend to forget to. Before we kick off the showdown there will be another post. Characters are under the cut, the list is currently unorganized, but might get organized later.
2.) If you see a character on here and you want to submit propaganda for them please feel free to, there is no submission limit or character per fandom limit. Here is the link to the submission form. Characters from the prior round of this showdown are fair game except Toph, Toothless and Hiccup. Additionally, most characters from @gay-disabled-characters-showdown are also fair game.
3.) The amount of submissions will not affect how likely a character is to get into the showdown. If you submitted a character and they are not here, we probably just haven’t gotten to verifying your character yet. If it’s been more than 3-4 days since you submitted the character you can shoot us an ask as to why they are not on the list, it might be an error on our part.
4.) When will submissions close? We have no fucking clue. At the earliest sometime October, as we are still working on setting up over @gay-disabled-characters-showdown which is still accepting submissions here. Additionally, as we need to write image descriptions it takes us a ridiculous amount of time to get set up.
5.) If you think a character doesn’t qualify you can send us an ask or leave a comment, and we can show you the explanation we have for the character as to how they count.
7.) If there is a character or media on here you think is problematic you can send us an ask and we will evaluate. That being said it’s not about being the best most perfect representation.

The Nature of the Beast (Black Ooze)
This post includes spoilers for Welcome Home a little bit, but there are also several spoilers for science fiction/horror movies/tv/stories.
It's nothing new though, I think the most recent reference is Deep Space Nine. Also !Spooky Pictures!
A history of oozing blob-like creatures in American film and television--
Ominous Obsidian Ooze:
According to tvtropes.org, this trope (of oozy black stuff) is called “Ominous Obsidian Ooze.”
It is defined by a black ooze, often shiny and often in stark contrast to its environment (and of course the example picture is Supernatural) . It is believed to have evolved from the prevalence of and concern about oil spills and other pollution. I think, for me at least, that pollution does really fit the vibe. It reminds me of Pollution from Good Omens.
So black ooze (the creature/entity) often leads to pain, mutation, unnatural death, and “even a Fate Worse Than Death.”
(So help me if we find out Sunny is the weathervane on Poppy’s house…)
Anyway, the ooze is speculated to have evolved from a fear of pollution, but also basic human fears such as water too dark to see into and water that you shouldn’t drink.
The closest association I have from this trope is the Stephen King short story, "The Raft," which was dramatized on Creepshow 2. I saw this as a younger kid, and the whole thing was spooky. There is a group of teens at the lake, probably playing hooky and definitely smoking cigarettes. They swim out to a raft in the middle of the lake (think floating wooden platform) and then this black slick on top of the water appears, and starts stalking and eating them, and they are trapped.
Just for you, I went to see what the plot is because I probably have misremembered all the important bits.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Raft_(short_story), OK, so, college kids, one of the girls sees pretty rainbows on the surface and touches it, and she gets sucked in and “ripped to shreds”
So, then the beastie pulls someone through the cracks on the raft, and they are no longer safe on the raft. The remaining woman faints, and the remaining guy can’t swim to shore while it is eating because he’d be leaving the woman to die, and he couldn’t swim fast enough while hauling her. They spend time taking turns watching and then end up committing the sin of sex, so death it is.
The thing that I find interesting in this portrayal of the black ooze is that it is attractive to the viewer. I guess secondarily, I find it interesting that this is a monster of inevitability, kind of like the Evil Dead universe, where they are trapped in one spot, die upon leaving the safe zone, but at the same time are convinced that they will die if they remain in the same place. What I’m trying to say is that someone needs a chainsaw hand.
(Evil Dead has some black goo in the form of on or coming out of Deadites.)
Of course, there is a version in DvD, named “Black Pudding,” deltailed as “large ooze, unassigned.” So thank goodness the ooze in neutral. It is very strong and has a strong constitution. Immune to blinging, charming, deafening, exhaustion, fright, and being knocked prone. It also can eat through 2-inch thick wood or metal in 1 round. It can also climb, including hanging upside down on the ceiling. They can be split apart into separate entities of a smaller size with certain hits taken. (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16808-black-pudding)
This is actually pretty reminiscent of the puppetmaster creature that I saw before, the Puppeteer Parasite, which seems to be somewhat cross-referenced to the pudding monster. The Puppeteer Parasite catches a ride and eats your life force. It can make you do things. (I believe that Skip from Dropout’s Dimension 20, Starstruck is a creature similar to this.) https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/2506151-puppeteer-parasite
Star Trek had its own version of the black blob monster, Armus from the episode, “Skin of Evil.” The concept in this episode is that the people of Vagra II had found a way to remove all evil from themselves and it mainifests as a black goo that can take the form of a human shape. It could also absorb people, and inflict psychic damage and physical weakness while you were in there. This guy famously killed Tasha Yar. For some reason, I must usually skip this one, because it is very vague for me. Anyway, it wants to torture people (castaways normally, they abandoned him on this planet) he wants to find a way to find those that made him for revenge purposes. Picard pulls a fast one (Look, a three-headed monkey!) and they beam up and take off. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Armus
Fun fact: Later that year, Ensign Mariner, furious over Boimler being promoted to lieutenant junior grade and transferring to the USS Titan, threatened to "feed [him] to an Armus." (LD: "No Small Parts")
You could make an argument that Odo from DS9 is a creature of this type, as he is a shapeshifter that spends a necessary amount of time in a liquid state regularly. If he doesn’t, he will be forced to revert (forced by his body). Any time Odo is in a liquid or shifting state, however, he is gold.
He doesn’t know if there are any others like him at the beginning, but as the show progresses, he forms a difficult relationship with his extended family, who exist as a sort of single consciousness, like the Borg, but more evolutionary instead of tech-based. When the changelings are in their natural state, they essentially look like a gold ocean on the planet’s surface. While this is dark, it also has the gold highlights. In fairness to the theme, though, these are not good people and they believe themselves to be god-like creatures or at least more worthy than anyone else. There is a whole period of the show where the paranoia of who is humanoid and who is changeling reaches a fever pitch. Listen, I could talk DS9 all day. (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Changeling)
I think the original version of this being is the classic movie monster, The Blob. “The Blob is an amorphous mass of alien goo that appears in the 1958 film of the same name. Appearing as nothing more than a mass of red gelatin, this creature possesses animalistic intelligence, acting purely on the instinct to feed. It feeds on flesh and gains mass as it consumes other creatures.”
Common tropes for ooze monsters:
Mesmerizing
Grows when it eats
Eats all life forms it comes across (the changelings qualify for this, but only in the conquering sense)
Eats the inexperienced
Can’t be killed by guns, electricity, or fire
Inescapable (at least seems to be)
This quote: “The Blob does little else except eat and grow” Same girl, same. But I think that the eat grow cycle is the thing that might be most important about this kind of monster. Impervious to ways that humans generally attempt to control or avoid things, and dead set on eating everyone. (https://monster.fandom.com/wiki/Blob)
For Welcome Home, that could be a direct link. We have seen the black goo underneath Home grow during our time with the website. We’ve also noticed stringy bits that have started to reach outward from home, like fingers looking to grab. Whatever else this force is, I think the idea that it is trying to devour people/puppets in some aspect is the right idea.
Coming soon, part 2, where goo in Welcome Home specifically is explored.

ROUND 1 BRACKET LISTINGS
Welcome to Round 1 of the Wasted Woman Poll, the tournament to see which fridged woman deserved better!
Thank you everyone for your patience for Round 1 to begin. Now that the semester is over, I finished the list of match-ups for the Round 1 bracket.
There were 89 contestants for this tournament. Anyone familiar with tournaments knows that it doing a 89-contestant, single-elimination tournament would be annoying. Rather than cutting out 25 contestants to make it a 64-contestant tournament, I opted to use the format of a 64-contestant tournament, just with some of the poll in Round 1 (a majority of them, actually) being three-way polls with a single winner rather than solely two-way polls. So out of the 89 contestants going into Round 1, only 32 will go on to Round 2. Many of the listings in Round 1 will be characters from the same series going against each other, so that the future rounds will be more varied.
The tournament will be split into 4 sets of 8 polls each, with every poll running for a whole link. Below the cut will be the list of match-ups for each set and when the polls will premiere.
If there are any mistakes at all (spelling, if a character appears twice, if the media someone is listed under is incorrect, etc.) please let me know! I did double-check it, but I'm only human so errors do happen.
