This is how Stardates in TNG and DS9 (and supposedly TOS, even though Gene Roddenberry is on record saying they were random numbers) were *supposed* to work, from the Official Star Trek Fan Club of the UK #4 (1994). By Terry Jones.

why yes, i did post the entirety of the 16k intermission in one update.
recent events--most notably, a severe car accident resulting in multiple injuries--left me temporarily unable to update the website on schedule. i apologize for the radio silence, and offer this massive chunk of text as penance.
book 2 begins next week, and with it begins the real story of Stardust.

I have seen a few ways to write out Star Trek stardates in a way that would fit for the current era and none of them have sat well with me, so I decided to come up with my own and I think I did a good job with this variation. One that I hope will be pretty easy to follow and utilize in a way that won't take too much time to translate. It's about building up from the bottom.
Here's the break down:
So, the date is 12-8-2023 which would break down with the year out front, the month next, and ending out the number with the day. What comes after the decimal point, I hear you ask. Well, that's pretty simple, the time of day by the hour on a 24-hour system.
That makes the star date as of right now, 231208.20 and when using this version in a journal/log, supplemental additions to the can be just hit with a ".22" for the time rather than adding the whole date all over again. Maybe it's too much or seems silly, but I like this version.

The branches of the Armitage Hux Academy for Aspiring Troopers that we've been spreading to other planets have become pretty popular. Which is great for First Order recruitment, but with more schools comes the necessity for more teachers.
In today's morning meeting, Hux mentioned that he's been considering getting droids to teach the core classes (math, history, and such) to save money, so he would only have to pay biological teachers to teach the more advanced classes, like combat and engineering.
I was like, "Noooooooo, bro. Not a great idea."
Look, you all know I'm the least droidophobic person in the galaxy, but I've met some of those old-ass professor droids, and their programming is. . .not great.
Like, I actually met a history professor droid at the library once. He was SUPER old, so I asked if he had any cool historical events he could recount for me.
Dude legit started his story with, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . ."
Bruh. that's how you start a fairy tale, not a history lesson. You could at least give me a frame of reference like a BBY year or a stardate or something I can work with.

STAR TREK THEORY: Stardates Explained (How To Calculate Today’s Stardate)
Well, a bit on the long side and not cannon but I have to admit I quite like the system. It’s got the right FEEL to it for me.
It lets me plug it all into excel and get that:
Fri Oct 6th at 1:42pm is Stardate 00761.5
And this has been some of my today’s profound waste of time while I can’t take pain meds yet. Yay! ^_^
What I like best about it though is that it really spells it out well and complexly enough that you could base it on a different calendar and get a different culture’s Stardate by using different assumptions. And that’s just extra cool to me.

Keeping Time
Back in the day – which in this case means last century – while serving aboard nuclear submarines, I first encounters life in two different chronological constructs. While the world continued to operate on a 24-hours cycle, life aboard the submarine was constructed around an 18-hour day based on standing “watch” on the rotation of three shifts of 6 hours each. “What time is it?” was no longer a…

Journaling in power
Though it can be cringey to come across it's so strange reading old posts I wrote. So much of my old life, prior to getting clean is wiped away, thankfully and in a bittersweet way by a power greater than me
But the pictures I managed to post on my old Tumblr during active addiction on my old blog
WOW. the poetry that I shared. The posts that I wrote all the way back through highschool, it's crazy, I read the old posts and I could hear my old voice echoing through me. Stuff I had completely forgotten id yelled out to the void, was there echoing as if my future self knew id read it some day
Anyways I'm grateful for this old place
Tumblr is like a ruin I can always return to. And in the moment I went through some of my old wreckage, I find myself grateful that I had. Grateful that I left some pieces of my past. I'm grateful for how far I've come, and I also can see how the worthiness that was even my life then, in the wreck that it was emotionally.
I am so lucky to live, and to have live, and to continue to live
I'm grateful for past me.
Thank you for making this far
I giggle with you, not at you. It may have been pretty cringe, but you're alright kid. You were just fine, and it gets better 💓

the sand's piling in the bottom of the hour glass.
next chapter is the final chapter in book 1: prologue. if you like dystopias but you wish they were more about metafiction, gay relationship drama, and cosmic horror than they were about shooting people, you might enjoy picking up stardust, a dystopian sci-fi horror metafiction about a psychotic military cult victim and her straight-laced repressed best friend. updates are every other Sunday, soon to be every Sunday.

When ppl talk about alters being stuck in trauma time, they usually talk about those alters not knowing the body's friends, or recognizing where they live, or any number of physical reality changes. And we've definitely had that experience! But more often what "alters being stuck in trauma time" means for us is those alters know basic physical reality facts, but their emotional reality has not changed at all. So they might know our best friend, but they aren't connected to how that friend and I interact. They respond to everything like the trauma is still happening, so they expect any mistake to be met with punishment, they expect the ppl around them to suddenly hurt them without warning, they have no ability to use our modern coping methods, and they have no concept of anything being other than the abusive environment of our youth.
So yeah, our trauma-stuck alters typically know we live in a different house and our dad isn't coming home, and they know things like we graduated college and the names of our friends. What we struggle with a lot more is getting them to understand that this current time isn't just our childhood with new set dressings.
#actuallydid#dissociative identity disorder#i will say tho the fact that phones with the ability to stream unlimited music#has been a constant source of amazement and joy for our parts stuck in childhood#we can listen to WHATEVER we want WHEN we want its gr8#stardate log

todays herbarium story: new fucking way of dating things to confuse future archivists. someone wrote 66-1-3 as the date on a specimen. obviously i assumed 66 was the year and either the day was January 3rd or March 1st. put “1966” for the year in the file, marked as needing confirmation.
anyway one of the historical archivists went back and used the guys name to figure out about what month he confirmed it? and it was fucking 1866. the guy who cataloged it died in 1920.
i inadvertently handled a specimen thats older literally everyone i know and love and my only thought was mild irritation because it was dated weird.
we still dont know if it was found in January or March.
#the narwhal speaks#unfortunately i do not have a photo of it#i didnt think it was that old because someone had cut the speciman out and pasted it onto slightly newer paper#so it looked like it was still ‘old’ enough to be from 1966#anyway. pissing myself with laughter#i think this is the oldest specimen we have in the herbarium and it has the most galaxy brain take of writing dates#stardate 66-1-3 today i fucking found a cool leucophyllum frutescens#also i didnt think it might have been 1800s because the oldest speciman i found before this was 1905
