When ppl talk about alters being stuck in trauma time, they usually talk about those alters not knowing the body's friends, or recognizing where they live, or any number of physical reality changes. And we've definitely had that experience! But more often what "alters being stuck in trauma time" means for us is those alters know basic physical reality facts, but their emotional reality has not changed at all. So they might know our best friend, but they aren't connected to how that friend and I interact. They respond to everything like the trauma is still happening, so they expect any mistake to be met with punishment, they expect the ppl around them to suddenly hurt them without warning, they have no ability to use our modern coping methods, and they have no concept of anything being other than the abusive environment of our youth.

So yeah, our trauma-stuck alters typically know we live in a different house and our dad isn't coming home, and they know things like we graduated college and the names of our friends. What we struggle with a lot more is getting them to understand that this current time isn't just our childhood with new set dressings.

It's sad that Agents of Shield gets no love on What If (typical mcu behavior), but the show literally has like 2.5 versions of its own What If scenarios so there's that

And the show itself is lowkey a What If since it's technically canon but never acknowledged LMAO

For me, Natasha having an emotional moment after barely escaping the Hulk is one of the only things I liked about her portrayal in Avengers 1, but only if I pretend the rest of the movie was better written. If Nastasha had been written as more emotionally controlled or even-tempered the rest of the movie, it would have given that scene the impact it needed. Bc being chased by the Hulk is the one situation she can't control, and Natasha needs to be in control whether by her physical prowess or charisma. With the Hulk neither worked. She could not fight or talk her way to safety. It's bc of her experience in the Red Room that the Hulk experience should be deeply upsetting to her- it's a reminder that when she's not in control, she's not safe. However, like you said there's a lot of sexism applied to her character so they portrayed her as emotional (she is visibly shaken when Bruce pretends to get angry; in general she shows what shes feeling except the Loki interrogation) which makes her breakdown after the Hulk feel cheap and meaningless.

it is so weird to rewatch phase 1 and have these canonically extremely skilled and competent women in every movie, but also still see the same old sexism applied to them.

like, natasha romanoff, who at this point went through the fucking red room and everything that's associated with leaving the red room, having a breakdown after running away from the hulk for a little bit. thats pretty much a morning workout for her. generally the way they still sexualized her in this movie and had her act in some scenes.

I started therapy 8 weeks ago and it’s awesome. The immediate fallout has been uncovering and confronting a bunch of repressed garbage that was making me miserable, reconnecting with my book, publishing a chapter of fic, applying for a 9 month horticultural program at the university extension office, and beating Outer Wilds/Echoes of the Eye. That last one isn’t so much a result of therapy as it was unintentional additional therapy. But seriously everyone should play it. 👍
