Was watching TNG with my dad and during one of the poker scenes he (while referring to Riker) said something like "I don't understand how anyone could call someone they've slept with "Sie" (polite/professional you in German)" but Worf was on screen at the time so it somehow didn't really click that he was talking about Deanna and for a few baffling seconds I lived in a world where my dad had somehow misconstrued Worf and Riker as having canonically slept with each other.

Deanna Troi: Counsellor, personal log… My mother is due to be transported aboard the ship in a few minutes. Everyone seems to be reacting to her appearance. Especially the captain, who has been enjoying a simulation on the holodeck for several hours. In other circumstances I would be concerned about his mental health, but under the current circumstances I envy him.

Jean-Luc Picard: *Sensing the bad vibes, he went to the holodeck, deciding that between meeting Troi's mother and the threat of death at the hands of a fictional character, the latter wasn't so bad after all.*

I know Lwaxana was originally written as a horny cougar joke but I kinda love the idea that betazoids have a different reproductive curve than humans and reach peak fertility in their forties or fifties. There would be a whole cultural idea around having to have at least a few decades of life experience and a well established career before you're even considered ready to raise a child.

All this to say that Lwaxana having Deanna in her twenties was probably a huge scandal. Like, this girl from this incredibly prestigious family having the equivalent of a teenage pregnancy and then, because the father is a human the child is basically disabled as well. Prime gossip material.

I believe that is why Lwaxana is like that. She had to learn to not give a shit about other people's opinion very young and she became the legend of a federation ambassador and the woman who will live her best life no matter what just to show them.
