“Thirty… three…”

“…thirty-four?”

Konoha giggled when she got no response.

Reimu had fallen asleep.

She sighed in contentment, snuggling up closer to her best friend.

This was something they’d do every night, right up until one of them fell asleep.

Occasionally, very rarely, they’d fall asleep at the same time. But that didn’t happen often.

This little ritual was one of her favorite things about nighttime.

The stars, the moon, the comforting dark… and Reimu.

Reimu and her beautiful voice.

Konoha knew that she’d have no trouble making it to the final round.

And she would win, for sure.

But now wasn’t the time to be worrying about the final round.

No, they hadn’t even started the first round yet.

Konoha would be going up in the first round.

She wanted to win, of course. She wanted to win and come back to Reimu, smiling and laughing and holding her in her arms.

But at the same time…

…some little part of her wanted to lose.

Something within her wanted her to give up while she could, to end it all here.

She didn’t want to go up against Reimu.

But if both of them kept winning, that matchup would be inevitable.

She smiled sadly, wrapping her arms around the beautiful girl.

Maybe…

Maybe she should lose the first round.

She didn’t want to go against Reimu.

She couldn’t do that to her.

Couldn’t do that to herself.

But she wanted to win.

More than anything, she wanted to win.

It wasn’t long before Konoha fell asleep as well.

“Yuuto! You can’t just sing good,” Kouya growled, grabbing his shoulders. “You gotta kick their ass! Beat ‘em up with your voice, show them that— hey! What’re you laughing for?!”

“Ahaha… sorry, Kouya,” he chuckled. “You’re just so serious about this…”

“And you’re not serious enough,” he grumbled, turning away, yet leaning into the taller boy’s body. “Quit treating this like some sort of game, Yuuto…”

Yuuto had no response to that.

Rather, he simply ran his fingers through the boy’s messy hair.

“Love you, Kouya.”

“…love ya too,” Kouya mumbled in response. “Promise me you’ll win, ‘kay?”

“I’ll try.”

Truthfully, Yuuto knew full well that he wasn’t nearly serious enough about all this.

But Kouya’s been so stressed lately. Stressing out as well would only make everything worse for him, wouldn’t it?

Besides… Yuuto had no reason to be worrying.

He already knew he wouldn’t be winning.

It’s better to enjoy the present than to dwell on an unobtainable future, isn’t it…?
