It was unhealthy,
It was controlling,
It was immature,
It was doomed from the start.
But goddammit, the love was there!
And more than anything, it was cherished.

"We're Gonna Win."
Naz was always saying that.
"You'll win when you go to Alien Stage, I know it," she said when they were kids in the Garden, red eyes flashing like a fanatic, a believer speaking to their god.
At that time, when Naz spoke of these things in their future, Akane just laughed a little in response, unconvinced but nevertheless bolstered by the cocksure statement. "What makes you say that?"
Naz flopped back so her head rested on Akane's lap, her signature toothy grin lighting up her whole face. "Because you're the best. You're the most talented, and the prettiest, and the smartest. Duh."
Akane didn't believe those words at this age, held back by a lingering uncertainty of herself, an insecurity she wasn't sure she would ever shake after all she'd endured. Sometimes she felt strange in her own skin, like there was something growing behind her ribs and spilling between the gaps of bone, desperate to escape but with no way out. Something needed to be let out and she never knew what.
Naz seemed to know exactly how to express herself, especially when it came to Akane. From the day they met, Naz had no trouble telling Akane what they thought of her. They showed such doubtless faith in Akane. At some point, maybe it started to rub off on her.
The older they got, the more she believed Naz when she told her how amazing she was, what incredible things she would do.
"I'm not worried," came Naz's steady voice at Akane's side when Akane's long-awaited season began, the brackets for each contestant's first round filled. While Akane worried at the flesh on the inside of her cheek, tasting the sharp tang of her own blood, Naz turned to her and beamed.
"You'll do it," she insisted, her voice trembling not with fear but excitement. Her hands landed on Akane's shoulders and gently shook her. "You'll beat her. And the person after that, and after that. You'll win, I know it! You'll be the best the whole world has ever seen, Akane!"
Akane's teeth let her bleeding flesh go, and a light, fond laugh burst from her chest, not so doubtful as when she was a child; instead, she felt the tightness in her sternum ease. "What if I really win? What would we do?"
Anything, Naz had laughed out, spinning her around on the spot. The two were a strange bright spot among a bleak, numbed background. Maybe I wouldn't even have to compete next season. You could get me out of it. We could do anything.
Akane found herself believing Naz after years of Naz believing in her.
"Don't worry," she said to Naz when they observed the other competitors' performances together the night of each round. Like Naz did for her a million times, she squeezed their hand and whispered, "We're gonna win."
Eyes and lips the color of flowers, Naz's face brightened in a smile, and they squeezed Akane's hand back.
They had to win.
Akane belongs to @aakaneeee! :D I hope you don't mind that I wrote this from Akane's perspective. I wanted to understand her character better and feel out her relationship with Naz from her perspective, as well as her psyche in general. Lmk if there are any mischaracterizations and I'll improve them!
#JUST FELL TO MY KNEES#god reading this back made me realize that both tov and naz share a level of naivety that is a bit uncharacteristic of them#but that naivety is born out of love#naz loved akane so she believed she could win despite the odds#tov loved tallis and himei so she believed they could win despite the odds#knowing that naz comes to hate tov for akane’s death is so interesting because they’re really mirrors of each other#in a way naz is hating herself for being naive and believing in akane to the point of self detriment#which is also what tov did with both tallis and himei#they’re literally ideological sisters why are they fighting?!#alien stage#alnst#alien stage oc#alnst oc#alnst oc: naz#alnst oc: akane#alien stage fan season#alnst fan season#alnst season 39#alien stage season 39
