It's hard to think of many comics works that have gone as much mid-publication and post-publication second-guessing as Matt Wagner's GRENDEL: DEVIL BY THE DEED, a tragic sort-of superhero saga about the battle between a suave fiend called Grendel (sort of an evil Batman by way of Fantomas) and his theoretically heroic but generally monstrous werewolf-like foe Grendel, centered on a young girl named Stacy Palumbo, who was the adoptive daughter of Grendel's alter ego, mystery novelist Hunter Rose. Wagner began the original version of the story in 1982, but after three installments, he pulled the plug, frustrated that his craft still fell short of his ambition.
In 1985, he completely retooled the story and ran it in serialized form in his fantasy series MAGE: THE HERO DISCOVERED, making the unusual choice to step back from the original version's conventional comic book narrative in favor of prose narration (ostensibly part of an in-universe book by Stacy Palumbo's daughter Christine, written years after the fact) with stylish Art Deco layouts, using inventive design to cover for some still dodgy figure work (compensated somewhat by Rich Rankin's inks). This was much more satisfactory to everyone except, apparently, Wagner, so he kept tinkering with it. The serialized version of DEVIL BY THE DEED (subsequently released as a graphic novel by Comico in 1986) was in color — I guess by Wagner himself, as no other colorist is credited in the MAGE issues — and looked pretty good, but when Dark Horse reprinted the story in the '90s, Wagner had it recolored by Bernie Mireault and Kathryn Delaney, giving it a significantly but not dramatically different look. Here are the two color versions; the left is the original MAGE version, the right the Mireault/Delaney version:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not entirely sure if the recoloring (and relettering) was done for aesthetic reasons or if the original color separations were gone or no longer usable. While Wagner has always owned GRENDEL and MAGE, when Comico went bankrupt, many of the physical assets of the GRENDEL series ended up in limbo for many years before Wagner was able to reclaim them, so it may have been necessary to reshoot and recolor the story from the original art. In any case, while the Mireault/Delaney version is somewhat more dramatic, I find the loss of the original warm Deco vibe somewhat regrettable.
In the early '00s, Wagner returned to the Hunter Rose character with a miniseries called GRENDEL: BLACK, WHITE & RED, a series of stylish but not very pleasant short stories distinguished by using no color other than red. Wagner then had Chris Pitzer recolor DEVIL BY THE DEED along the same lines, in which version the above page looks like this:
Tumblr media
I can't say I find this a great improvement — I think the B&W&Red thing (or B&W&Gold, etc.) is a gimmick best taken in small doses, and it makes the previously colorful DEVIL BY THE DEED seem rather drab. However, Wagner apparently considers it the definitive version, and it's what's now collected in the GRENDEL OMNIBUS books.
Wagner apparently still wasn't satisfied, so after the pandemic started, he decided to completely redo DEVIL BY THE DEED, not just remastering and recoloring it, but redrawing and rewriting the entire story, in the process expanding it to about three times its original length (and making an already dark story considerably meaner and bloodier). In the revised MASTER'S EDITION version (colored by Cameron Mazzia and Wagner's son Brennan), the equivalent of the above page looks like this:
Tumblr media
Wagner's mature style is obviously more accomplished than when he was a teenager (40 years earlier!), but I can't help feeling that something has been lost in the process. The original color and most of the Art Deco motifs have gone (there are a few smatterings of the latter, but not many), but maybe the biggest loss is the sense of invention. I was always impressed at Wagner's boldness in completely reimagining his own story to work around what he felt were his own youthful limitations, and there's little left of that in the MASTER EDITION even if the results are more polished.

Billy and Chuck, Stacy Keibler x Fem Reader- "Pose a Threat"
In 2002, wrestlers Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo were paired up in this WWE tagteam known as, well, Billy and Chuck---a wrestling tagteam that had blatantly homosexual innuendo, and that was the entire point of them, right down to when they had a same sex marriage in the ring.
During that year, Billy and Chuck would do these pose down contests against WWE divas in the ring.
On a "Smackdown" episode that aired in 2002, Billy and Chuck would have a pose down contest against you and Stacy Keibler in the ring.
When you and Stacy walked down to the ring, you and she were both wearing these very short, brightly colored towels that managed to not fall off of you and her while walking down to the ring.
One of your hands as well as one of Stacy's hands was grasping on to the top of your towel as you and she strolled down to the ring.
As you and she walked to the ring, many male fans in the audience whistled at you and many of them got out of their seats and cheered.
You and Stacy smiled as you walked down to the ring together, and your hand sometimes held the top of your towel.
With a smile on his face, Jerry Lawler kept screeching into the microphone hoping your towel or Stacy's would fall off or that he'd see a slip of your vulva or hers.
You and Stacy didn't have to hold on to the tops of your towels, you and she could've just walked down to the ring not holding on to them.
You and Stacy walked up the stairs and carefully ducked your heads under the ropes, your towel and hers managing not to fall off.
You and Stacy really were naked under those towels.
However, your vulva and hers wasn't shown under your towel when you and she ducked your head under the top rope.
After you and Stacy walked towards the middle of the ring, the contest began.
Billy and Chuck shed their bathrobes off in the middle of the ring.
"Are you gonna take your towels off, ladies?" Jerry Lawler asked, which got a loud pop from many of the males in the audience and the camera showing some of these men cheering.
You told Jerry no and shook your head back and forth, because you and Stacy really were both naked under your towels.
One of Jerry's hands tried reaching out to grab your towel, but you quickly jerked away from him.
Billy and Chuck were up first in this contest, where they gave some silly and awkward pose that was meant to make people laugh, not to mention was meant to give off gay vibes.
You and Stacy were stiffling laughter and giggling as you watched Billy and Chuck struck these obviously gay poses.
When it was your turn as well as Stacy's, you and Stacy stood in the middle of the ring with your ass touching her ass.
You and Stacy stood close to each other with your knees and hers slightly bent while your hands and hers grabbed the tops of your towel.
Considering that your wrestling gimmick was based on "Three's Company"; which was a sitcom that was considered "jiggle TV" during the golden era of that genre where "Charlie's Angels" was also on the air, you and Stacy could've posed like Charlie's Angels in the intro to that show.
Actually, you and Stacy walking down to the ring holding brightly colored towels was meant to be a recreation of when these 2 blondes at the end of the "Three's Company" episode "Snow Job" walked out of the apartment wearing brightly colored towels after a game of strip poker.
Speaking of "Three's Company", there was a moment where you and Stacy sat down on the ring close to each other.
This moment was a recreation from a "Three's Company" episode where Janet and Chrissy covered their scantily clad bodies with a blanket.
If you could, you would undo your towel and wrap it around Stacy's body.
While you and Stacy struck these poses, Billy and Chuck were staying in character even though they both were probably secretly getting erections.
After these poses, Jerry held his hand over Billy and Chuck's to see if the audience liked them.
For the most part, they didn't.
Jerry then held his hand over your head and Stacy's if the audience preferred you and her.
You and Stacy got the loudest cheers.
The WWE in the 2000's had gay men portrayed as comedic and as a joke, whereas if women in the WWE were queer baiting (Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson kissing each other, Torrie Wilson and Sable making out), it was meant to be through the male gaze and objectifying them.
2002 was filled with so much same sex relations in the WWE, it was basically the year of the queer: Billy and Chuck, the Lesbians, Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson making out with each other and Torrie Wilson doing these provocative poses with Stacy Keibler and Trish Stratus in bikinis in the ring.

(SUNDAY.) BACKSTAGE; 7:10 PM
Time has passed since your match. Today was the day.
InVasion was officially kicking off. This was the dealbreaker, and you could feel tension rising as you made your way through backstage.
With more tension comes more segments. You noted that you were being pushed like hell for the Alliance, and you couldn’t complain about it. You just hoped fans wouldn’t be sick of you. You leaned on the wall.
Being interviewed by Lillian, you smile. “That’s an easy question to answer. We’re taking over the whole damn company by the time this is over. I just can’t wait to see the WWF get washed away.”
“[Name], I have to ask—“
“No more questions.” You state. “I have nothing else to say. Thanks.”
Sauntering away, you were all happy again. It’s time to check out the card for today.
CHUCK PALUMBO & SEAN O’HAIRE V. THE APA
BILLY KIDMAN V. X-PAC
RAVEN V. WILLIAM REGAL
TRISH STRATUS & LITA V. TORRIE WILSON & STACY KEIBLER (SPECIAL REFEREE: [NAME])
Hold on a second, stop the presses.
You were the referee for that match? Of course you were shocked at first but if you were truly turning on Torrie and Stacy, you understood why. But wouldn’t it sound unfair?
BACKSTAGE; 7:20 PM
Lacing up your boots tightly, you were preparing for the match that you had to referee. It sounded like an unfair advantage, with you being team WCW and all, but you understood why. Tonight was the night you would betray your team..
You noticed a figure in front of you and you looked up to see both Torrie and Stacy, who were followed by cameras.
Great! They just had to put you into this.
“That’s what I’m saying! Hey, [Name].” Stacy greeted and you shifted in your spot.
“Hey you two. What’s up?”
“Nothing much really, we just wanted to thank you for sticking with us for so long. You protected us and you totally went to war for us.” Stacy continued, and the way she put it made you feel guilty about this storyline. You were 99% sure that they were filled in on the plan as well.
You were gonna miss being on their side though. Since you were pretty close to them and you only had a few acquaintances on WWF’s side. Could you really even consider them friends? You didn’t wanna seem too clingy or whatever.
Torrie noticed you up in the clouds. “You okay? Something up?”
You smile, but shake your head, forcing it away. You had nearly forgotten the cameras were on you. “It’s nothing. If I’m the referee I have to look a little stylish. I was thinking about...my outfit.” You excuse.
Torrie seemed doubtful, but Stacy believed you. Changing the subject quickly, you tug at the end of your shirt.
“They almost forced me to wear something more revealing than this. I don’t mind the confidence I’m going to need to have and all but I hate going out all scantily clad.” You frown. “Even though...your match is about stripping your opponent down.”
“But [Name], I’ve seen you pose for magazines before.” Stacy says. “You look fine!”
“She’s right! You’ve got shape. I kind of get why you wouldn’t enjoy it, but then again, that’s just your decision.” Torrie shrugs. She respected that.
To say the least, you were embarrassed. You appreciated the words but they just said it so carefree. “I’d love to chat more about me, but we should really get going guys. Let’s do our best tonight.” You say supportively, and the three of you went down the hallway towards gorilla.
INVASION; 7:25 PM
You were introduced first. The crowd had cheered you on this go around, since they had started to like you just the slightest lately. When you walked out there, you realized that that stage was HUGE.
“Ladies and Gentleman, your special guest referee for this match, [Name]!”
Waving and being dramatic, you slid into the ring. Taking a seat on the ropes, you waited for the rest of the women to come out.
If Stephanie told you that you had to start playing for the faces soon, you were going to transition very slowly. You felt like she just told you that so technically she could see you more.
Torrie came out next. She was in high spirits and confident enough that they would win this.
“Introducing first for this match, representing WCW...Torrie Wilson!”
Torrie approached you. She smiled as she noticed you perched on the ropes. She was capturing your attention until Stacy came.
“Also representing WCW...Stacy Keibler!”
Coming down the ramp, and doing her provocative entrance into the ring, you flash them both a smile.
Next, it was the WWF’s turn. Once Trish was on her way down, The two blondes tried to distract you and influence you to be on their side, but as you stated earlier, you were strictly playing it fair tonight. It was like they were saying ‘look at me, [name]! look at me!’ And Trish smirked, opening her arms in a confusion. She wondered what the hell was up with those two.
Finally, Lita’s music played. You just picked up on the fact that all of them were wearing long pants and tank tops. Smart, but maybe they should have picked long sleeves too.
No time to think though, since Lita and Trish immediately stormed the ring. Stacy and Torrie cower behind you as you seem to sputter an odd explanation for why. But you speaking had caused both women to attack from behind you. That’s when the bell rung.
Luckily you weren’t wrestling, so all you had to do was sit back and watch until your cue.
But then, it started to get crazy. Trish dealt with Torrie, and Lita dealt with Stacy. You did feel that was fitting because the two were doing some snake like things behind the scenes, purposely antagonizing them.
You had held back Lita, who had rolled Stacy out of the ring. Trying to calm her down, she struggled against your hold. You had to instruct her and Stacy to get in their corners. While you did that, Torrie delivered a drop kick to Trish. Those two were the legal men.
She then pushed Trish to the corner, slapping her hard. Torrie turned to you, saying something along the lines of; “You like that? You saw that?”
You sigh, her being cocky was her downfall since Trish reversed her into the corner. Exchanging blows, Trish was going to irish whip Torrie back into the corner across from them, but Torrie reversed and Trish had bounced back off the turnbuckles, clotheslining her.
When Torrie hit the ground, Trish had begun to lift up her shirt. Stacy had interfered, jumping into the ring and pulling Trish’s hair back. Lita reached out her hand anxiously awaiting a tag.
Double-teaming Trish, you wondered if that was legal. Maybe you should not have zoned out during instructions. But at the very least you knew what to do..!
Yeah. Totally.
Fortuneately for Trish, she gave them a double clothesline and hobbled over to Lita for her to be tagged in. The other women scuttered right back to the outside and argued over who was going to get tagged in. Torrie ran over to Stacy and tagged her in, but they still argued like kids.
Lita had enough and elbowed Torrie right off the apron. Lita pulled over a leaning Stacy into the ring the hard way. She then snatched up Stacy’s shirt and you walked around the ring spectating. You had to clap it up for Lita. Stacy was going to run away to Torrie but Lita dragged her back by the pants. In fear, Stacy rolled out of the ring and Lita gave chase.
You watch as the two were running around before Stacy had come back into the ring. This time, Torrie kicked her down to double-team her. Okay, maybe this was the time you needed to count.
“Hey!” You yell, coming over. “One! Two! Three! Break it up you two!” Hearing you say that, this was their chance. Stacy pulled Lita’s shirt off. This match was kind of stupid now that you thought about it. What would this prove? What dignity would this give them? Would it not only strip that away? Literally.
Lita flipped Stacy over, before tossing her across the ring. She was basically man-handling her. And here you were, skipping around the ring. The woman climbed the top of the rope to try and land on the now standing Stacy to no avail. Stacy had ended up moving out of the way. Making a beeline to tag in Torrie, she hopped in eagerly. As did Trish.
Knocking Trish down, Torrie ripped off her shirt. All the women had their shirts off except Torrie. You were impressed. Despite them being green as grass, they were doing great.
Least for a second. Trish reversed and took Torrie’s pants off. Now Trish has the upper hand as her and Lita pulled off a poetry in motion.
The crowd noted that you were counting Torrie and Stacy, but not Trish and Lita. It made them perplexed.
Off went Torrie’s shirt, and you suddenly realized that WWF was totally winning this match.
When she scampered out the ring, and they pulled Stacy in, this was when you had your time to shine.
They doubled teamed her and you separated them from her. The three of you had an intense stare off and it seemed you’d be the loser if you hadn’t turned around, and started taking Stacy’s pants off instead of fighting them. The crowd popped at your betrayal.
Lita and Trish were shocked, but joined in. There were clothes every-damn-where but you stood in the center as you raised the two’s hands up.
“Here are your winners, Trish Stratus and Lita!”
The three of you exited the ring, hands interlocked with eachother. Turning, you put your arms up again.
Seems like not everyone is playing fair.
BACKSTAGE; 8:00 PM
You could feel the HEAT radiating off you. You knew the Alliance was pissed. They had no clue of Stephanie’s plans. You’d have to avoid members as long as you could. You were going to lose your mind if the Dudleyz put you through a table for punishment.
Someone had tapped your shoulder and you had whirled around to see Edge who looked goofy as hell with goggles on his face.
“Look who it is.” You say in amusement, turning your head to him.
“Wasn’t able to speak to you a few days ago. I saw your match.” He says. “You were on fire. You also did a pretty nice job today.”
You became flustered at his words. “Thanks. I was nervous, but I pushed through.”
“There’s no reason you should have been,” He reassured. “If you feel that way next time, do what you normally do. Turn on your auto-pilot.”
Maybe he wasn’t quite the best at advice, but you found it endearing. “Not that easy, but I’ll be sure to let go tonight.” You wink, and he gave you a goofy smile. “But hey, where's Christian? I’m shocked he isn’t with you.” You look behind him and around.
“If you’re curious, Christian’s getting ready. We’ve got a tag team match.” He informs. ”Didn’t you see?”
You take a peak at the card again, and he was correct. They were going up against Mike Awesome and Lance Storm.
“I’ve gotta ask though.” You could not read his emotion too well because of his goggles, but you noticed his slowly growing smile. “You....you’re gonna come watch, right? I want you to witness firsthand how cool we are.” He effused. Though you had a small suspicion he was trying to flirt with you somehow..
“Sure. I’ll watch you guys, Edge. I’ll even sit by the announcers table for you.”
He seemed to brighten up at that comment. “Listen, [Name]. As much as I don’t want to admit it, you kind of reek.”
“I don’t smell bad do I? I was sweating a little bit I had took a shower earlier..” You ask worriedly, taking a step back. Edge shook his head, taking a step forward towards you.
“Nah. You’ve got it all wrong. I think you may reek of awesomeness. Now that you do, I want you to put on these goggles for me.” He has bestowed upon you some silver ones and you take them from him. “Since today you’re on WWF’s side officially, these are for you.”
“Oh. Wow. I’m super honored. I think I’ll keep these on for a while.” You say, putting them on. It sounded monotone but it really didn’t mean any harm. Honestly, you looked pretty silly but you didn’t mind one bit.
“Did you end up keeping that kazoo?” He suddenly asks. You adjust your goggles, looking up at him.
“Yes. Why?”
“Just wondering. I’d give other people some and at times they either lose them or just throw them away, so congrats to you for keeping it.”
You almost giggled at how childishly dismayed he looked.
INVASION; 8:10 PM
Edge told Christian about how you were coming out tonight. In the midst of the match they seemed distracted. The commentators actually brought this up, but there wasn’t any fruition to it.
That is, until you appeared mid-match. As promised, you sat down by the commentators table. You weren’t doing commentary, but you stayed silent and watched in a chair. Crossing your legs, you gave a smile.
Now the two just wanted to show off. You could tell they were adding extra stuff onto their move set.
It was cute! Really.
You did enjoy the match, but you note how long it was. You were sour about that. However, you suddenly had a wonderful proposition for a very hardcore match. You just hoped it would go through.
You slowly began to walk around the ring since you decided that you couldn’t really sit still. You weren’t gonna interfere. This was something they’d have to do on their own.
....
Unfortunately, the two didn’t win this match. You hopped out of your seat and exited back out. You wished you could celebrate with them, but they’d have to get their shit together.
...Wouldn’t it be a dream to manage them?
Hitting backstage, you saw Stephanie again. Approaching her with caution, she was speaking with someone who had a ‘Game Over’ shirt on.
...The night was not over just yet. Who was she speaking to..?

Originally published by Comico and later by Dark Horse, Matt Wagner's Grendel is a creator-owned series that's evolved over the years from costumed adventure to political drama to postapocalyptic action. Most of the stories are now collected in a series of massive Omnibus volumes, which have been reissued in the past couple of years with new covers.
Vol. 1 includes most of the original Hunter Rose saga, about the original Grendel character, a dapper but ruthless and sadistic costumed criminal mastermind battling a werewolf-like antihero called Argent. The Omnibus includes the "Devil by the Deed" storyline originally serialized in Wagner's MAGE series in 1985 (recolored in grayscale and red rather than full color), plus several other sets of stories about Hunter Rose. It's not quite comprehensive: It omits the early, abortive Comico issues Wagner retooled as "Devil by the Deed" (which were reprinted in the 2007 GRENDEL ARCHIVES, and which Wagner considers apocryphal), and crossovers between Hunter Rose and Batman (from 1994) and The Shadow (from 2014). Probably the most peculiar omission is that it excludes the 1989 SILVERBACK miniseries by William Messner-Loebs and John Peck, which presents the origin of Argent; I don't know if Wagner has disowned that series or if the assets needed to reprint it are no longer available.
Vol. 2 covers the first 20 issues of the Comico GRENDEL series, and take place about 40 years after Hunter Rose's death, in a near-future world where Hunter's biographer Christine Spar, daughter of Hunter's adoptive daughter Stacy Palumbo, becomes Grendel. The volume actually begins with a later series called "Devil Child," by Wagner's long-time editor (and sister-in-law) Diana Schutz and Tim Sale (originally published as a miniseries in the late 1990s), which deals with Stacy's fate; it is creatively accomplished but extremely bleak (and needs CWs for sexual assault and spousal abuse). The ongoing series, drawn first by the Pander Bros. in a somewhat dated but generally appealing anime-inspired style, later by Bernie Mireault, is a tragic but engrossing saga of rage and revenge, somewhat more fantastical than the Hunter Rose stories. The Christine Spar story is probably the most compelling and emotionally engaging section of the whole story, although the followup, tracing the subsequent fate of her boyfriend Brian, is again very bleak.
Vol. 3 covers the remainder of the Comico series, which ended with issue #40 due to Comico's bankruptcy. This moves the timeline forward hundreds of years, first with a set of experimental (if somewhat annoying) transitional issues, and then with an engrossing but rather frosty saga of political machinations and civil war, as an ambitious businessman called Orion Assante leads an insurrection against the power of a future Catholic Church and a plague of vampirism, with the dubious aid of a mentally unstable man named Eppie Thatcher, who assumes the Grendel role and may or may not be demonically possessed. The transitional issues at the beginning are rough going stylistically, but the main story is interesting and elaborately plotted science fiction, marred chiefly by the deliberate emotional distancing of the main character (CWs apply for incest, along with a lot of sometimes icky violence), whose death decades later brings the arc to a close.
Vol. 4 includes the GRENDEL: WAR CHILD miniseries, originally intended as issues #41–50 of the Comico series, which introduce the cyborg warrior Grendel Prime and deal with the fallout following Orion Assante's death. This is a fairly conventional episodic adventure, probably at least partly inspired by LONE WOLF & CUB, with the Terminator-like Prime traveling through the apocalyptic wastes with Orion's son and heir Jupiter. It's most interesting in how it addresses the various ramifications of the previous storyline, although the almost dismissive way Wagner dispenses with that story's survivors is off-putting. This is followed by PAST PRIME, by Wagner and Greg Rucka, which is a rather too purple illustrated prose novel about a later adventure of Grendel Prime and Susan Veraghen, one of the characters from WAR CHILD. This is followed by DEVIL'S QUEST, originally serialized elsewhere, which is actually the prelude to the second Batman-Grendel crossover in 1996; Wagner apparently hasn't yet negotiated the rights to reprint those crossovers again (they were last collected in 2008), which is puzzling if you haven't read that story, although QUEST has some of the best and most experimental artwork of Wagner's career.
Vols. 5 and 6, not pictured, reprint the GRENDEL TALES series, which were Wagner's attempt to open up his concept to other writer/artist teams, most published as miniseries by Dark Horse between 1992 and 1998. Unfortunately, all are set in the world of Grendel Prime, full of cliched postapocalyptic horrors and boring warrior-clan bullshit with none of the political scheming and character conflicts that made the Orion saga interesting; there's some nice art, but the endless parade of threadbare concepts, throwaway characters, and nearly inevitable grim denouements becomes wearing quickly. Of the more than 800 pages of material, the only installments worth a look are FOUR DEVILS, ONE HELL (more for its stylish Teddy Kristiansen art than its typically pompous James Robinson script) and HOMECOMING (by Pat McEowon and Dave Cooper), a downbeat story in which Susan Veraghen goes on a bloody, leather-clad rampage to avenge the death of her former girlfriend.
I very much hope Wagner will work something out with DC to reissue the Batman/Grendel crossovers of the '90s. The first, with Batman and Hunter Rose, is by far the best, with an elaborately constructed secondary plot enlivening the shaggy dog story of the main confrontation and extremely intricate artwork; the second, with a time-travel Grendel Prime, is not as artistically adventuresome and is basically a TERMINATOR story with Batman, although it's worth a look to see what the DEVIL'S QUEST story was all about.
Wagner's Grendel/Shadow crossover is a fun romp, and works better than Wagner's misfired THE SHADOW: YEAR ONE, which made me miss the Howard Chaykin/Andy Helfer/Kyle Baker version.

"Because I now belonged, heart and soul, to the devil. He had won." - Stacy Palumbo
New sketch post. Wanted to make a basic one and try my hand on the blushing effect, not that bad, I'd say.
