V. The Emperor- Jon Jarl Today, the card representing power, rule and authority- both in the aspect of positive domination, of leadership and structure- as well as abusing it, of dictatorship and cruelty. Jon Jarl was on both sides of it. Other than that, damn this feels appropriate in the light of the announced medieval event that will start soon in SSO, especially due to it's close location to Jarlaheim.

SSO Rewritten- A Short Story: Jon Jarl - The Curse of Immortality
(A secret, truthful recounting of the story of the jarl’s downfall by his faithful chronicler)
Many think the downfall of the jarl was the siege of Jarlaheim. Some say it was when he chose the druids of this godsforsaken island instead of his old friend, Thrymson. Others think it was the moment he set foot on Jorvik guided by destiny. Time will tell, they say.
I say the fall of Jon Jarl was not a single event. It was his pride.
History is shaped and written by the victors. Which is a polite way of saying: lying. Leaders like him win their wars by mastering the art of deception. I, too, have written many lies about his conquers.
Leaders don’t like the truth. However, the truth does not care. It can be buried beneath a web of lies, mountains of deception, locked away in hidden, secret treasuries, but it will persist. Unlike Jon Jarl, the truth is eternal.
Maybe it is time I wrote something true about him.
The true downfall of the jarl, just like many other leaders’ was his pride.
He took on this cursed journey to the island of Jorvik, because he thought he could beat destiny. He conquered the island and ruled over its kingdoms because someone told him he couldn’t. He destroyed the runestones because he thought they were a challenge issued at him. He set something terrible in motion, the druids said. Maybe there is a dragon sleeping beneath the island.
He betrayed his lifelong friend, Thrymson, by choosing the druids over him, when he saw they had power. And when Thrymson was cursed with immortality, the jarl, in his pride called it a gift and he, too wanted it.
He sent Thrymson on a fool’s quest to find the secret of immortality for him. When he obviously could not find it, the jarl called him a traitor. The truth is, the real fool was the jarl for trusting a witch. This was the first and not the last time he made that mistake. He judged him guilty of witchcraft and had Thrymson executed thus creating his second greatest bane.
The first one was continuing his fool’s quest for immortality.
The end of his road led to a great forest in the northern part of the island, where one of the great trees of the island stood. We all knew better than to disturb the sacred trees of the witches and the druids, but the jarl was certain he would find what he was looking for here. A dream told him so I believe. In those days he saw many of those dark dreams leading him to more and more ruin.
At this point I have to point out another lie. The jarl’s famous words at our arrival to the were not “This land is now my land and I name it Jorvik and I shall defend it with my life as long as I live and with my soul after I am dead!”. He had me make this up after the events I am about to tell here. He did not say anything when we first landed on these shores, beside the sound one makes while their lunch unwelcomely comes back. This was also the sound many of us made after the ungodly storm we just got through. I believe his first words here were “Bloody island”.
In that sacred grove, he had his men fell the Great Guardian tree. He uncovered a strange artifact from the corpse of the ancient: a seed-like gemstone glowing with strange magic.
These were the last moments of his victory, as in that moment, with the setting of twilight, one of the witches appeared out of the darkness. The prideful jarl asked for immortality for one last time. The witch laughed.
“You trespass upon our hallowed grounds, destroy our runestones keeping the darkness at bay, fell our protector trees and you have the face to ask anything of us?”
“With the legacy I have created, I deserve it.”
“Oh, you will get what you deserve, prideful jarl. Do you want immortality? You shall be immortal. You shall never cease to exist. You and your stolen riches will forever remain in Jorvik, trapped by my curse. You shall never leave this place behind. Not until there is darkness during the day and light in the night. Not until the land ascends and stars fall again. Not until you learn humility and right the wrongs you committed against this place. Thus I have spoken and thus it shall be.”
With this the witch was gone and the jarl was immortal.
I called his a fool’s quest not because he could not get what he was after, but because of the price he was -obvious to anyone but him- going to pay.
It has been 10 years since the jarl’s death and, just like the witch said, he remains. Many have seen his ghostly form around his tomb, around his city, around the tree stump of his greatest achievement and greatest failure. We, his people, shall all fade, and leave the bloody island.
I know him enough to know he is already trying to find a way to break the curse. But he will never leave this place again. Until the land ascends the stars fall and he rights his wrongs, he and Thrymson will remain here in eternal damnation the jarl has created for the both of them.
But maybe he will succeed. He was -is- Jon Jarl after all.
Time will tell.

A few illustrations with Galloper that I was inspired by song by @therainbowvaquero. Every time I listen to this song, it touches something inside and encourages me to draw him again 💔
I tried to draw a few moments the way it would look in my au, so some things don't match canon :>

MC: *clicks pen*
Galloper: *clicks pen in response*
Jon Jarl: Stop that.
MC: Stop what?
Jon Jarl: You’re talking about me in Morse code!
MC: Yes, that’s what we doing. In our very limited time, we took a class on a very outdated, very unnecessary form of communication just so we could talk about you in front of you. Congrats, you figured us out!
*later*
MC, to Alex: That’s actually exactly what we were doing.

I was watching the video for the sso medieval event and..
I realized if the inhabitants during the medieval period on Jorvik KNEW soulriders existed without Jon Jarl ( who arrived in 1218 and being friends with the Keepers of Aideen and backing up their religion )
they would probably be treated like witches and made to confess/or accused of lying through brutal torture but only to be accused anyway then have to go through the horrific deaths
I havent heard of any soulriders/Druids being found and executed in the medieval period ( for what people would believe then their powers would be considered witchcraft and would hunt and execute them ) so I think that has something to do with the Druids and Keepers of Aideen being close with Jon Jarl so they where always recognized as friends and friendly natives
Now if anyone tries to say that they didn't do witch hunts and burn witches on Jorvik during the medieval period, it DID happen. If you do the quests with the witches in sso you see the mention that MULTIPLE TIMES and we can look back in the books and see a organization called the Sixth Hammer that was MADE for hunting and persecuting witches, even the quests in Galloper's Keep. They mention some of the spirits of persecuted witches, AND GALLOPER WAS PERSECUTED FOR IT TOO.
If you're curious about the Sixth Hammer in the books im refering to when they talk about what happend to Sand's first lover because she was tortured and persecuted for supposed witchcraft
( Note that Im not far in the books but I have deep dived in other places and took a look in the books that I do have )
If yall want go ahead and reblog with your thoughts, but I will warn yall that I will not tolerate this being used for starting or fueling fights. This post is just me rambling about my findings and looking for any others that have found similar info on this topic.
Im also going to point out that Im not targeting the medieval event. Im absolutely EXCITED and can't wait for the event, but Im posting this because I wanted to share my thoughts and how it contrasts with the REAL medieval period/ ' Dark Ages '.
Have a lovely day!

The Trees are part of the Squid's Plan! (major main quest spoilers)
After spending way too long playing through the new quests in SSO, I've come up with a theory. A real long theory. That the Life Wardens are siding with both Dark Riders and Soul Riders in order to repair the Wild Weave and reconnect with one another, inadvertently helping the Dark Riders to free Garnok.
Lemme explain.
This is the map in the Fort Maria portal room. It shows the seven major Life Wardens that we know of, but it also gives us some clues about the story going forwards.
First, the obvious.
Yeah, there's no way that little illustration in the corner is anything but Ol' Squiddy's Tentacles. But we knew he was imprisoned between worlds, in neither Pandoria nor Jorvik - so finding out he's been chilling in the Wild Weave, or a location only accessible by it, makes sense.
Next, when it comes to putting a name to each of these trees I think most are fairly self explanatory. We've known about most of these trees for years, even if they've never been a part of the story, such as with the Ice Tree by the Stonecutter's Vault in Dino Valley, and the Unnamed Tree way up near where you finish the Red String Trail in the Firgrove Mountains.
Where it gets interesting is with the two trees I couldn't place; such as the one between the Sentinel Tree in Mistfall and the Ice Tree in Dino Valley; and the one on the far left, signified by floating islands.
In my mind it makes sense to have a couple of the trees sprouting in Pandoria, since the two worlds are connected by the tree roots - and the only floating rocks I know about are in Pandoria - but who knows.
Overlaying the normal map on top of these locations makes it pretty clear that they're supposed to correspond to real map locations. The only anomaly is the Ice Tree and Sentinel Tree, whose positions are reversed on the portal map.
What's interesting is that Garnok, if I'm following the map's logic correctly, would hold exactly the same positioning as the Dark Core Oil Rig.
(For context, we know the Rig's position from old skybox errors that used to show it when stood in the right spots, some maps from the books (which I know aren't always canon anymore, but hey it's the best we've got) and, most recently, if the player looks South when entering Devil's Gap, thanks to that little black hole we helped Sunshine open up recently.)
Where am I going with all this? Okay!
Firstly, we know that the trees have helped the Dark Riders in the past. The Life Wardens have repeatedly said the only loyalty they have is to each other, and quite frankly after what the Jarl did, who can blame them. (Thanks Jon).
This is going into massive spoiler territory for the most recent quest as of 17/1/24 so if you haven't completed it yet, flee.
The Sentinel Tree in the Wildwoods has been corrupted by Pandorian magic for a while now. But in the newest quest, we saw Sabine using the Runesmasher to break into it and create a portal to free Erissa.
Side tangent about the hammer:
For those who didn't play the Halloween quests, basically one of the Jarl's servants got the ice valley smith to make a hammer that could destroy runestones, broke one open, and a Vala witch gave him immortality. Aka. Sive (or an identical Vala witch), who is deeply connected with the Life Wardens and who probably gave Sabine the hammer when we saw her in Devil's Gap, has no problem with this action.
The Life Wardens, or at the very least Sive, their ally, wanted the portal opened and Erissa freed.
Why?
To re-grow the Wild Weave.
Assuming Garnok's position on my map was correct, the only way the Dark Riders now have to free him is to go directly through the Wild Weave.
And since we're good people who like nature... yeahhh the Soul Riders are totally going to end up healing some trees and inadvertently opening the path to Garnok wide open.
Oh yeah. We're going to mess up royally.

I have found it interesting that Jon Jarls descendants are just simple farmers and then there is the Silverglade family that has a lot of influence.
I would think Jon Jarl in all his ego would make him and his family the royal family. But apparently that havent been the case. Or at the very least it didnt last for very long. Jon Jarl have been referred to as king at some points but never have there been any mention of any actual royal family. Atleast not what I can remember.
Silveglade and Jarlasson are apparently related so maybe Silverglade and Jon Jarls descendants fought over Jorvik (either in direct war or just political) and had a political marriage to smooth thing over?
And for the Baroness influence nowadays only seem to be over the people that live in the Silverglade region consider no one in Jorvik City payed her any mind when she was there and Linda mentioning she needed to talk to people that lived localy if she wants people to listen.
Currently thinking about Jorvik's political situation as a form of procrastination sooo...
As Jorvik is sort of a mysterious island and people from outside don't really remember that it exists, I would definitely think that in terms of foreign policy, it remains isolated and doesn't really interact with other countries. It's not part of the EU or NATO. That would mean though that leaders would most likely be affiliated with the keepers or it would be hilarious if like a prime minister of Jorvik reaches out to other countries and everyone is like "who?" "Does this country even exist?".
But what about an internal situation? Definitely, a leftist country, that's not arguable. But I think it's commonly accepted that it would be considered a Scandinavian country and all of them have royal families so does Jorvik have one? I would think that it might have abolished monarchy not that long ago, around 10 years ago.
Anyway, discussion is welcome. Let me know what you think.

me and the gf want to try screen-printing and i wanted something sso-themed for myself. which sketch do think i should do? probably printed on a t-shirt. i don't know how well it will turn out, but it will be fun to try.
also the establishing years are kinda wack, i just wanted them for the ~aesthetic~. sso launched in 2011 so that's why i chose that for silverglade and moorland but i could have sworn i remembered an exact date being tied to jorvik stables... but then i found something on the wiki that said it was founded in jon jarl's time so... i just picked a year after he came to jorvik? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if any jorvik historians or lorekeepers wanna suggest something else, please do!

Have you ever thought to yourself: Yee howdy, I wish I could know what everyone thinks of my favorite character, and I also wish we could all definitively rank them in popularity based on the whims of the public? Then do I have the thing for you!
Right out the gate, it's time to vote for favorite characters. The votes for favorite NPC (human) and favorite NPC (other) will be running alongside each other, with the vote for NPC (other) starting a little later to make them both finish at the same time and end in an epic dual victory.
I have chosen to split them up because there's a lot of NPC's and we can expedite the process somewhat by having separate tournaments running alongside each other.
Humanoid creatures such as Pandorians residing in the circus will be counted as humans because that's how they choose to present and I will respect that.
Certain conditions apply regarding characters added to SSO just to host races, NPC's that are named but do not take part in quests, and characters from earlier games. these characters will not partake because the list is so. long. already.
Every poll will be accompanied by a picture and a brief description to refresh your memory, so don't worry if you can't remember them just by name! If you have any concerns or can't see your favorite NPC anywhere, send a message or an ask.
The first NPC (human) tournamnet will take place over 3 sessions of 40 posts per week, because it's 120 posts and I don't want to overwhelm you with that many posts. Once we've narrowed it down to 60 favorites it will be split into 2 sessions, and once we've only got 30 contestants left, I'll post them all in one go until a winner is declared. That's also when the NPC (other) polls will be posted.
Who will go up against who is randomized and can be found under the cut.
