The newest, hottest rising star in Hollywood. He came out of nowhere and shot to stardom.

Rich shut the laptop. The grinning face still etched in his mind.

He knew Jake's face anywhere. The slightly crooked grin that put a dent in his image of perfection, the way a smile never truly reaches his eyes, the scars on his hands from the fire all those months ago. That was Jake.

The only difference was the electric blue eyes and the bleach-blonde hair. A transformation eerily similar to his own, but putting himself in front of a camera all day every day was not what Jake wanted to do. He knew that.

So who the fuck was wearing Jake's face, and where was Jake?

Rich's phone began to buzz on the arm of the couch next to him.

(It wasn't his couch, this wasn't even his place. Well, it was now. Officially, legally, all that bullshit. But all the stuff in it? It was still Jake's.)

He sighed and answered the call.

"You saw it?" Came the voice on the other end. Sharp, venomous voice, and a very pointed question. Chloe.

Rich: "I saw it."

Chloe: "He thrives on attention but not that fucking much."

Rich: "I know."

Chloe: "Then-"

Rich: "I don't know."

Chloe's voice was softer with her next question. "Are you okay?"

Rich didn't respond for a moment.

"I don't know."

i need to work on my big bang fic but my brain is disastrous and came up with a different au

basically uhhhh humanity fucks up in some way and plants start overtaking the world, mainly by beginning to take over human bodies kinda. The gist of it is that a very large majority of people start growing different types of flora from their body and their mind goes blank (like a plant)

basically just flower zombies but they don't attack people

Unlike my other ideas, this au would be focused on the SQUIP, who becomes active after Jeremy is incapable of mentally fighting him off cause whoops jeremy has flowers blooming from his flesh

(line idea: "The SQUIP was used to the constant din of Jeremy's thoughts, which filled its processor every hour of every day. Even in Jeremy's sleep, since humans never stopped thinking. When that noise faded, the SQUIP knew something had gone horribly wrong.")

the SQUIP is able to get Jeremy to wake up a little after learning about what happened, and Jere is basically a zombie. despite this, the SQUIP can barely parse a goal of sorts in jeremy's plant-infested brain: "Find Michael."

The SQUIP, being a program designed to accomplish a host's goal, makes it his mission to help this very much lethargic and kind of braindead Jeremy Heere find Michael, despite the fact that, from the few memories that SQUIP can find, Michael has definitely succumbed to the same fate as Jeremy and the rest of the world

TLDR; Jeremy turns into a flower zombie and SQUIP has to help him find Michael

Really, I only had this idea because of this idea for a scene (under the cut)

"The SQUIP made Jeremy walk for a couple hours more, walking past dilapidated buildings and overgrown gardens (and people, the SQUIP noted.) Eventually, however, it begun to rain. The SQUIP had known it was going to rain, (despite any weather channel that could've existed to assist him now being defunct,) but didn't know if it would affect his host. He had made a couple of predictions, most of them not warranting any concern. It would just make Jeremy stop for a little bit.

The SQUIP was blessed with a small thought from its shell of a host. "Yes, Jeremy, that's rain." It replied, crossing its holographic arms as the din of light rain began to fill their audio processors.

It was quiet for a moment.

what's ur favorite bmc fanfic ever

OOOH okay this is a good question.

Ngl I don't think I could give you a solid "here is the one (1) best fic ever" so here's a whole bunch that I've rated 5 stars in my fic document!

Stammer - Excellent 100k fic, if you're looking for something long. Basically it explores Jeremy and Michael's relationship from when they were kids til a bit after the events of the musical. Really good character piece <3

Jeremy drops out of college during December of his freshman year - REALLY REALLY GOOD fic-- one of my favorites from Beth Harker. Basically Jeremy undergoes a lot of panic attacks and self hatred (some brought on by what remains of the Squip) as he and Michael go to college together. About 10k words.

in the back of my brain, the voices all sound the same - Pretty short ~1k fic that explores the idea of the Squip changing shape into things like Jeremy himself. Forever thinking about the implications.

Play it in Reverse - Really cool podfic that brings in the musical aspect of bmc and acknowledges it! With the Squip's help, Jeremy tries to fix the events of the musical by changing the lyrics. About an hour to fully listen to.

flesh & bone - AU where Jeremy is an android and the Squip Squad find him and repair him. LOVE the dynamic of everyone in this fic, but it's unfortunately unfinished. About 40k words and still worth a read despite this.

Loaded, Recoded, Unsorted - Ngl I think this was the first ever bmc fic I read?? Anyways, it still lasts in my brain despite being unfinished with about 15k words in total. Basically, Michael slowly becomes a squip with all the fun psychological horror that comes with that. Honestly if you like this I'd recommend checking out more of Nez's work. Excellent squip horror writer.

The Mechanics of Compromise - Ngl pretty much everyone I've come across has read this fic and it shouldn't be a surprise that its on this list. Absolutely adore how they handle everyone's dynamics and manage to create a really fun plot as everyone recovers from the events of the musical. Another really good 100k+ fic.

Only One Is Mine - Holy shit this fic is almost coming up on 100k words. Anyways this fic is so so so good. Basically it deals with the rising squipocalypse after the musical as Jeremy accidentally fuses with his squip and has to learn what it means to be half human, half supercomputer. LOVE this concept so much and love how its handled. Honestly one of my all time favorite fics in general-- really cool stuff!! Shoutout to Jordan fr <3

Ophiocordyceps nippon - TRAGICALLY short fic that meant i actually rated it only 4 stars but I thought I'd share because I am still thinking about it. Basically what if the Squip was a fungus.

michael was in a very fnaf style situation, an arcade worker who ended up being the last one alive after killing the animatronics and games that came to life.

christine was sort of phantom of the opera'd. strings of murders in her theater shows, taking down people who threatened her success. (she did not do the murder)

chloe had a stalker, who she ended up taking out.

brooke was the victim of a cult, and she was the last one standing.

rich was originally a possessed person who ended up throwing off the possession, but has to deal with the guilt of being the one to kill people even though it wasn't his own mind.

jake was caught up with a frat's really shitty supernatural hazing, and was the one who ended up taking out the thing that killed his frat brothers.

jenna was the classic slasher final girl, complete with the scream-style phone calls.

(they all realize that their situations ended up being the same supernatural entity : the squip. )

I have a lot so here’s another one!

There’s this horror/mystery ghost au thing that i have that centers around jenna, exploring shit that goes on with the popular kids and jeremy, with what goes on between him and michael and the school in general. I wanted it to be in a different format. Like diaries and audio logs and scribbled notes. Think house of leaves vibe(if anyone knows the book). There’s possession and lots of stuff about the dark side of human nature and urban legend references and some murder. The ghosts are technically squips but they function in a different way. There’s an entire arc where jeremy goes insane kinda? Because of the possession and all that and there’s lots of rambling and derealization. Lots of alternating povs too. Jenna’s parts are more solving mysteries and hunting ghosts with michael. Michael’s logs are mostly audio with conversations with christine, jeremy, and jenna. There’s richjake and pinkberry and they both get involved with different cases that are basically symbolizing how they’re toxic and doomed. Maybe there’s popular kids polycule in the end too who knows. I don’t know I haven’t thought about it but it would be fun to write about their dynamics. This au is really messy and incoherent and I really want to get the house of leaves vibe down so it would be hard to design and write. There’s lots of visuals too like blurry pictures of supernatural events and ghosts that jenna and michael take which idk how to incorporate it. It’s basically a fever dream i had when i was trying to sleep

What is the character’s go-to drink order? 

C!Anony gets a lemonade or water because it hates coffee and tea! Ubo would order a slushie or a tea depending on vibes.

What is their grooming routine? 

Ubo doesn’t really have a grooming routine because she can just change her appearance. C!Anony often forgets to sleep and other things because of his research so. They are not the best at self care. 

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go?

C!Anony’s expenses based on cost: lab equipment and materials, cabin necessities (food, bills, etc), personal stuff Ubo doesn’t really neeeed to buy things but she likes to buy things using C!Anony’s card sometimes. Partly to be annoying but also because she will see a cool bird themed thing and buy it.

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

The closest C!Anony has is its pin, representing itself and its old family, and a reminder of what once was their goal. Ubo has little purple splotches on her skin because she got corrupted.

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? 

C!Anony last cried during the AU adventure arc thing! It found out that their original timeline forgot about them :D Ubo last cried probably,,, after un-monster-ifying which was a while ago!

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? 

Ubo is a younger sibling, and C!Anony is an older sibling. Ubo’s idea of normal sibling behavior started out with “taking the weaker sibling over and sending the weaker sibling into a painful, dark eternity” based on experience, and has since. Progressed to Not be that. 

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. C!Anony’s got old sneakers that they haven’t bothered to replace. Ubo on the other hand has these fancy black boots because she thought they made her look evil-er.

Describe the place where they sleep. 

C!Anony sleeps in a bed, it's messy. There are probably papers in there with writing that is incomprehensible.  Ubo doesn’t sleep so much as enter a sleep mode. (I hc that SQUIPs have a little mind palace area that they can go when not active, and Ubo’s is full purples and blacks and birds :D) 

What is their favorite/least favorite holiday? 

C!Anony used to like Halloween until they got sent to a horror maze. Now it likes Christmas bc they get to spend time with family and friends. Ubo likes Halloween because it's spooky!! Ubo’s least favorite is Easter because it's too tacky.

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

C!Anony: Labcoat, various tools and gadgets, phone, safety equipment, moss. They. eat it. Yeah. 

Ubo: An internet’s worth of information at the finger tips, sarcasm. “Evil plans”.

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results: 

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

dreaming of pills - MayoNassey 3 fics of nightmare sequences revolving around what happened during canon! Very good shit.

Memories Get Erased - Duck_Life More angst, less horror, but the Squip erases and changes Jeremy's memories of Michael during canon. (Once again. The implications.)

Cabinet Man - TheWritingDork, what_in_the Ever listened to Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon? Yeah that's what this fic is about. AU where the Squip is a demonic arcade machine and Jeremy gets trapped inside, Michael trying to help him escape before he loses his friend permanently. The last chapter is less of my kind of thing but overall it was really good

"Are you sure about this?" Michael asked as he helped tie the extra rope around Jeremy's waist, the other teen testing his noose. "What if you get hurt?"

"It'll be fine, I've practiced this tons of times before."

"If you're sure..."

"Come on Michael!" The goth smiled as adjusted his feet on the wobbling chair. "It's gonna be a great Halloween prank. Now go get everyone else!" Michael rolled his eyes, closing the janitor closet door behind him as Jeremy kicked the chair from under him allowing his body to fall. Every Halloween he found a new way to freak people out and this year he'd finally pretend to hang himself. Michael didn't see the joke in it but he wouldn't question his friend. Entering the auditorium he most of the group on stage talking to each other and called out.

"Hey can you guys help me find Jeremy? He said he wanted to show me something but he disappeared."

"I'm not falling for one of his lame pranks again," Rich said but moving but Christine smacked him over the head, "Hey!"

"They're not lame."

"Yeah they're gross, remember when he got strawberry jelly on my new shoes?" Chloe asked making a disgusted noise, "or the time one of his blood packs exploded on everyone?''

"Holy shit, is he okay?"

"Yeah, it's a trick he's been working on for a while, there's a second rope holding up his body. The noose is just for show, come on Jer we-" Michael went to turn Jeremy's body asking and instead found the waist rope had come loose. Meaning Jeremy was...

"Shit! Jake give me your pocket knife!"

"Very funny Michael-"

"No I'm serious! The prank went wrong!" He tried to lift Jeremy's body up to give him sure but his friend's eyes were still closed and he barely move. Jake handed him the knife and Michael quickly began to saw at the rope while everyone else stared unsure what to do.

When he finally got his friend's body down panicking Michael panicked. "Does anyone know CPR, fuck, fuck, fuck-" Michael was cut off by a laugh and looked down at Jeremy's body confused. He almost had a heart attack as his friend sat up, perfectly fine.

"O-oh my God! I really got you!"

"What the fuck? I thought you were dead!"

"I know!" Jeremy smiled, lifting guys shirt to show another rope tied around his waist under his shirt. "Man you should've seen your face! God-," he burst out laughing, holding his stomach. Nobody else was laughing with him making the teen look up to see blank or angry faces.

"I was worried about you asshole!" Michael got up glaring at Jeremy.

"Oh come on-"

"Fuck off Jeremy." Michael stormed out the door leaving Jeremy alone with the rest of the drama club.
