It took Yor a moment to realize that the creepy sound she was hearing was coming from the TV in the living room.

She’d gone to take a shower while Loid and Anya watched Spy Wars together – a nighttime routine that seemed to have been established since before she was married, and one she was content to let remain a father-daughter activity – and when she emerged a half hour later, an eerie sense of unease crept over her for several moments before she pinpointed where the noise was coming from.

Hair still dripping, she entered the living room, surprised to see both her husband and daughter passed out – one on the couch, one on the floor.

Poor Anya must have been exhausted, she thought. And poor Loid working so hard to make sure she gets good grades…

Resolved, Yor quickly wrapped her hair in a towel and got to work. She put Anya to bed first; the girl was a very heavy sleeper, so it wasn’t a difficult task. Once she was settled, she went back to the living room, intending to wake Loid but distracted once again by the music on the TV. When she looked closer, she realized that Spy Wars had ended and the station had moved on to a more intense film.

It’s for the best they both passed out, Yor thought as she flicked off the screen. I don’t think Anya would have slept at all if she saw—

“Oh, is it over?” a voice asked behind her, and Yor shrieked in surprise, collapsing to the ground as she whirled around. Loid was sitting up now, looking just as startled and wide awake. “S-Sorry, Yor, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Yor put a hand to her racing heart. “I thought you were sleeping!” she hissed, glancing down the hall but knowing full well Anya wouldn’t have been disturbed.

Loid’s lips twitched upward. He tried pressing them together, but it was useless. Within moments he was laughing, and Yor would have been more embarrassed if she hadn’t also found the situation amusing. “Y-Your face! That screheheheam!”

“Why, you—!” Yor got to her feet and lunged for him, her fingers easily finding purchase in his ribs, making him arch and cackle even harder. “I’ll give you something to laugh at!”

“I’m sohohohohohohorry, Yohohohohohor!” Loid managed in the midst of breathless giggles. “It was fuhuhuhuhuhuhunny!”

“That TV was playing creepy music that had me all on edge, and you have the audacity to just start talking when I thought you were asleep?” she teased in a playfully admonishing tone, finding that really bad spot at the top of his ribs near his armpits. “I’ll teach you to scare me to death!”

“Yohohohohohohohor!” Loid squealed, toppling backward onto the couch, now fully at her mercy as he squirmed and laughed. “Plehehehehehehease, I’m sohohohohohohorry!”

From inside her bedroom, Anya smiled to herself. Mama and Papa are flirting. Overhearing both of their thoughts at once and feeling more secure than ever, she snuggled further under the covers and drifted back off to sleep.
