Did no one else realise that "Spuds Spud Emporium" (you know, the fairy restaurant in TAI) was based off a real chain of restaurants? It's called "Spudulike" and they were fairly popular during the early 2000's, having around fifty outlets across the UK. All they sold were baked potatoes with filling. A true Icon

I should correct that - Sinulog is the correct version. It's a quasi-religious festival, Fiesta Señora (the Christ Child) here on Cebu. One of the processions parades the basilica's venerated image of Santo Niño. Think Rio Carnival or Mardi Gras with fewer tits. A friend from London described it as Notting Hill Carnival on speed. Having avoided NHC all my years of living in London I was not thrilled to find I would be in Cebu City for the festival. Oh well, when in Rome. So far it seems colourful with cheerful smiling crowds of a size even I can manage and without any feeling of underlying threat. Of course I left everything possible in the hotel safe but didn't feel the need to be particularly alert. The ban on alcohol probably helps, and no-one has offered me drugs or executed anyone for selling them. Only the rain dampened the proceedings but being in a hotel right in the centre I was able to beat a hasty retreat.

After lunch I returned to the street to watch further Spamalot floats and dancers, this time mainly Ninja turtles I think. Dancing daffodils were also in evidence, no doubt recycling costumes from Easter, and why not. By now the Winnalot crowds were thicker but the mood was still good. I stayed for a while after the rain returned and didn't seem to get wet as the heat evaporated the moisture almost as soon as it landed.

After a further rest I went on another aimless walkabout among the Spudulike crowds, which by now were as thick as custard but not as thick as mousse. After half an hour I had had enough.

Cebu city isn't exactly attractive. I think it would be fair to say that architecture is not a priority here. There's far too much aimless walking around with one's friends to do instead. The friendliness of the people is, however, everywhere - people at the airport, on the bus, hotel staff and people on the street and even the taxi driver negotiating his way from the bus station to my hotel through streets full of Travulog participants. He didn't even try to rip me off and even gave me the majority of my change. Smiles everywhere seem entirely genuine. Whether this is just Singalong party spirit I don't know but I have a couple of months to find out.

I knew that one problem with the Stroganoff Festival would be that they would turn off the mobile phone network except for emergency calls. I didn't realise that this would also affect WiFi at the hotel so I would have no way of contacting people from Couchsurfing who I had intended to meet, which is a pity. It's back on now. I hope I can share videos soon.

Britain’s Spudulike collapses with loss of 298 jobs

Baked potato chain Spudulike collapsed on Monday after a prospective buyer pulled out of a deal, resulting in the closure of all 37 outlets and the loss of 298 jobs, administrator Leonard Curtis said here.

Spudulike’s collapse marks the latest blow to Britain’s high street and follows celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s restaurant chain going into administration in May, which left 1,000 people without jobs.

“We are now focusing on seeking any interest in the group’s remaining assets whilst managing the impact of the closures on former employees, helping them prepare and submit claims for any arrears of wages, statutory notice entitlement and redundancy pay,” joint administrator Neil Bennett said in a statement.

Bennett said he had worked with joint administrator Alex Cadwallader to prepare a company voluntary agreement (CVA), which was rejected by creditors, and had tried to sell all or part of Spudulike’s business and assets to a number of prospective buyers.

Spudulike, which sells fresh oven-baked potatoes with a choice of fillings, opened its first outlet in 1974 in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh.

The Spudulike Group operated three trading companies T&G Fast Food Developments, Courts Quality Foods and Spud-U-Like Ltd.

There were almost 5 million fewer trips to full-service restaurants in the 12 weeks to March 24, compared with a year earlier, data from Kantar showed. Sales in such restaurants fell by 6% in the year to March 24.
