Yesterday, I watched a couple kids Halloween specials: Spookley the Square Pumpkin, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and It’s Magic Charlie Brown. Spookley is a favorite of my daughter’s. I think it evokes both a nostalgia of being really little and the humor of a slightly cynical/sarcastic high schooler can have for something poorly made. It’s from the same people that brought us the horror show of Miss Spider so that’s about what you should expect. Charlie Brown was huge for me in my formative years. I felt a real kinship w/Chuck—bad at sports, picked on, kind of a failure, but occasionally wins—and I definitely wanted to be Snoopy; just carefree and full of imagination. As an adult, I struggle with the misogyny of the shows and the tokenism of Franklin although I know that Schultz took a lot of heat for including a black character in Peanuts. Still, there’s some nostalgia for me from these shows so I try to enjoy them. One of my friends is a #kindergarten #teacher Before the school year started, she asked on FB if some of her friends would be willing to sponsor #books for her #students throughout the school year (10 books total) so that the kids can start their own libraries at home. She teaches at a low-income area and most families cannot afford to buy books. Many of us jumped at the opportunity to sponsor a kid. The book for #October was The Legend of #SpookleyTheSquarePumpkin 🎃I had fun putting #Garfield faces over all the kids to protect their privacy... some of them, like the kid who tilted her head sideways and put the book next to her face, not over, would be easy to ID, while some are better than others at putting the #OctoberBook over their faces so I just made them all Garfields to keep it uniform. . . . From the #donor perspective, it’s always nice to know what happened to my donation. I’ve started watching some of my favorite Halloween movies. This one is Spookley the Square Pumpkin. A cute movie for the kids. It’s about accepting pumpkins whether they’re round or square. I also watched Scary Godmother I and II. Another cute kids movie. Later I’ll watch Hocus Pocus and the Halloweentown movies. Rob and I loved to watch Halloween movies all through October.
