Also, "I hadn't meant to slay that dragon"!!! 11yo Simon killing the dragon on accident, presumably because he was 11 or 12 and panicked, and then everyone praises him for it and people (the mage) using it to treat him like he's so grown up!!! And he has dreams (probably nightmares) about it!!!! How would that not mess someone up??? Simon "living weapon" Snow starting early, both in life and book pacing (literally page one in my copy).

AWTWB Fan Illustrated Edition!!

Heyo! I’m back! With the final (for now) instalment of my makeshift illustrated editions. This one is for the third and my personal favorite book in the Simon Snow Series, Any Way the Wind Blow by the amazing @rainbowrowell!!

Just like last time if you’re tagged, your art is in it!

This is essentially me putting the art pieces to the lines in the book to show the beautiful words and the beautiful art at once.

DISCLAIMER!!! This time, I managed to find out my local library allows me to print pages of colored documents for only 10 cents (woot woot) so the image quality is much better. HOWEVER, if you don’t see an art piece you believe should be on there or have seen before or even made, it is not because I don’t like the art or artist, it’s because I simply missed it when finding art or forgot to put it on a page to print.

This was by far the hardest one to complete, it took a total of 6 and a half months to complete. Two months to find all the art, 3 to glue it all in, 1 month taking photos and labeling, and a half month putting it all in collages and creating the artist credits.

AND IT WAS WORTH IT!! it looks great and it’s amazing to see all the art next to their source material.

No character has alerted me to the fact that I am completely unprepared for emotional vulnerability the way that Baz Grimm Pitch has. If I spent years longing for someone, hid that longing under layer upon layer of resentment, finally got to be with them and explain the intricacies of that longing, only for them to break up with me in the long run I'd never speak to them again. I love Simon Snow, but he would never see me again in his lifetime. Especially not if that longing and desperation manifested itself into me declaring that nothing else is as important as our relationship. Especially not if I had to beg him not to end things. And then the next time they talk he says that he never even tried. I'd be gone. I'd cease to exist. In that moment. I can't believe Baz ends the conversation happy after that. I understand that Simon was just being real, but I could never be honest with him again and I may need to seek therapy for that.

Thinking about AWTWB from the lens of Promise by Laufey…

This song could easily fit either Simon or Baz’s POV but honestly if I were to choose, even though my first thought was Baz, this song fits so much better from Simon’s pov.

“I’ve done the math

There’s no solution

We’ll never last

Why can’t I let go of this?”

This verse especially screams Simon giving up before he’s even started, because he never thought he’d get to keep Baz. He wants to, god does he want to, but he’s so scared of the end that he just skips right to it.

The whole song just feels so strongly like Simon’s struggle throughout the book, desperately trying to cut himself off from Baz thinking it’s for the best (even though it really isn’t, he just needs help).

Actually you know what ok I had a realization and made this little connection/comparison in my head and gonna drop a bit of a controversial take here but tl;Dr is this: I hope Neil Gaiman really does know what he's doing because Rainbow Rowell didn't.

Spoilers for Good Omens 2 and Carry On series ahead.

My silly terrible brain just connected these two things together, Good Omens 2 and Simon Snow/Wayward Son.

What do these have in common? A LOT.

Both are sequels which were improbable and yet happened.

Both are in this weird after place where the main characters saved the day/averted end of the world and now they don't know what to do with themselves. They are slightly broken, want to fall into some routine, but they can't.

Therefore, 3, everything is a mess. A big mess. Chaos is brewing all around them from outside forces they don't understand. They don't know what to do but keep carrying on, keep moving forward.

When I first read Wayward Son I thought it was a chaotic mess. It didn't answer any of the true questions and address any real loose ends. I reread it, and thought, wait maybe, just MAYBE, it's on purpose! It's a mess on purpose and then in the next installment we'll get the real answers, SIMON WILL. FIND OUT SOMEHOW SOMEHOW HE'S ROSEBUD BOY! He'll "get his magic back", or rather, get real magic once the literal dead zone inside him heals because the ones he made do so why not in himself? He'll deal with the aftermath of The Mage's estate. ALL THE THINGS! Guess what? NONE OF THAT HAPPENED IN ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS.

All this to say, dear God, don't let me down, Neil.

Carry On/Wayward Son spoilers

You ever think that in an alternate Carry On reality, Lucy would've left Davy and raised Simon as a single mum. Mitali and Lucy would stay friends which would mean Penny and Simon would've been childhood friends. Maybe Lucy would join Lady Ruth and go to Mrs Wellbelove's parties and maybe Agatha and Simon would've been childhood friends. Baz would've grown up with a mum and maybe Simon wouldn't think he's always plotting. I think Lucy would've tried to befriend Natasha because the crucible casted their sons together. And maybe, just maybe, Mitali would still have Lucy.

Obviously.. he's kind of the most perfect character to me ever of all time i love him more than rainbow herself. I try to think of Good justification for putting him here like " ohhh he's so well written " and "i think it was really interesting how they made the vampire [ a common object of obsession/affection ] the one who's head over heels " or whatever and although thats all True i'm also just down horrendously bad he's kind of the love of my life

Obviously he's S tier he's The Main Guy. I don't really have any notes on him either Uhm read baz post again it kind of sums my feelings up also... [ feel free to ask specific questions about these two guys & i'll be able to talk about them better maybe.. ]

Penny

YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY I LOVE PENNY !! I'm so glad her and baz are friends that was so lovely to me reading for the first time.. She spends like. most of her school life hearing about how terrible and awful and evil this guy is and then when she actually Meets him she's right about simon being dramatic I like to think that post-carry on she makes fun of simon all tha time for being a big baby about him... she's so smart and i'm glad that although Yes she is the smart one she's also so multi dimensional !! i like when she goes out of her way to be friends with agatha at christmas !! and i like how strong she is in her own opinions !! she's so cool i wish i was more like her it's really obvious rainbow cares about all of them and i really love it

Hhhhhhhh i Love lamb he's the best like.. antagonist* of the series to me.... I really really wish wayward son was longer if for no other reason then baz got to hang out with him more. i KNOW people Won't agree with me on this But i really wish they spent more time together !! Baz has gone his WHOLE life with No other vampire " role model " or whatever [ not to mention no other queer people !! [ Well like simon but.. :sifUm: ] ] and i think it would have been really nice for him to make connections Outside of the watford group.. even though Yes he was kind of evil and likely predatory had baz chosen to hang out with him i think it would have been interesting to see baz talk to vampires more... especially ones who knew what they were doing... *unsure if he counts as one because he wasn't the Main one at least.. there's like a big bad and then a second guy I call the villain of all tha books and he was the second guy in wayward son

TEEHEE i used to hate this guy i found him sooo irritating but he's kind of lovely im so sorry shepard. I like how baz and penny being big geniuses wasn't enough so they just got. a third guy. who knows more but also can't really Do anything about it on account of the no magic at all.. In awtwb when they revealed he was cursed too i laughed liek Yea Of course you are you can't go messing around with big magic guys and not get cursed this is general fantasy knowledge... silly..

She's in A tier and i DO feel bad doing this but i Really hate her in awtwb.. I'm so over my agatha hating arc but i think she deserved better. I'm not upset she's a lesbian !! I'm upset at how. Rushed it was.. if that makes sense .. it very much feels like when writing sequels rainbow Didn't know what to do about her character arc but didn't want to leave her alone [ she IS a romance author ] so she just kind of gave her a girlfriend out of nowhere.. i wish she got to run away from magick also !! i feel like carry on agatha would Hate being watford's goatherd and being constantly surrounded by it all. I understand people change but I feel like this would still go against her personal beliefs.. ESPECIALLY after all the shit she went through in wayward son I feel like she'd want a break now more then ever bleghhhhh

BOOHOOHOO she's simons mom to me... Lucy would have been lovely but ebb was There for him and I think she deserves everything good in the world..

no Big justification here except I think she is lovely but Also she hurts my heart to think about because baz is convinced she'd hate him and i Don't believe that to be true.. it really really sucks that he will never know though I think he deserves the closure and I hope he gets visited sometime down the line and she tells him otherwise..

AUGH my favorite part about him is how his story is told backwards.. like at first he just seems like a neglectful paternal figure to simon and then you realize his personal ambitions/motives for everything he does and you go crazy and then HE goes crazy and oughhhh ... davy is so cool.. he does Suck though a little bit but i think he was the best twist villain* there Could have been.. A tier though because I'm still not over ebb

She's lovely.. it always breaks my heart that simon didn't realize he was getting his own visiting in carry on boo hoo hoo .. I also like how agatha saw her as a sort of inspiration, it's neat that her whole story is " oh !!! i want to be my own person out side of simon !!! " but one of her biggest inspirations is his mom and she doesn't know , theyre all connected...

Lady Ruth

AUH she's Lovely .. I really love any type of family magic / blood magic / whatever so I found her quite delightful.. Even though opening up awtwb for the first time and seeing her chapters i went !! who is this !! i Do wish everyday that Simon figuring out his family was handled differently, I feel like it would have taken more time than it did BUT I understand awtwb was quite long anyways..

I feel awkward putting them anywhere higher because theyre so Nothing but i like to think baz eventually invites them to start hanging out with the rest of the group and they become close with everyone, shepard Especially [ they find him fascinating.. spending so much time when they were young spent dealing with magickal politics that it's nice to talk to someone that. Wasn't around that ] but idk in canon they aren't really anything at all.. i do Not ship them though.. i know a lot of people do but i dont really care about them together..

BUT when it comes out in wayward son that she Knew what the tape recorder would do .. and even in carry on when she encourages him to take stuff for the sake of it.. its very obvious she's manipulating him because he's a child and looks up to her and idk.. Uhm to be honest writing this he's just . unmemorable. I will admit awtwb is my Least favorite of the books but smith is just so nothing to me... I think the idea of a " new chosen one " COULD have been really cool and I remember the First time I read it I thought he was neat but my hang up with awtwb is it seemed like the mage plots were second to making sure the couples had happy endings and I simply don't remember him being super cool or interesting.. i DO remember that he promised to Share his magic with people which i thought was really interesting i looved every approach to this.. treating magic like a fluid or whatever OUGH i really love the carry on magic system i get dizzy thinkign about it

Thank you @windsweptinred for tagging me! I am sorry it took me so long to get to this.

1. 3 ships I really like right now: Ohhh this is always tough for me. I have so many ships at all times. Ok well if we're going by my current brain rot...

Dreamling: No one is surprised by this. They caught me by the throat and have not let go for the last year. It's so funny coming in as someone who was familiar with the comics before the Netflix adaptation, because they are not at all romantic. Like, I got no romantic vibes from them (and I'm someone who sees romance vibes in everything). The MOST romance I can see MAYYYYYBE (and this is a massive maybe because I only read this arc after the show aired and I was already getting into Dreamling) happens in The Wake (and I won't go into further details because those are massive spoilers). Why do I like Dreamling? They're just so feral for each other in fanon. Plus it helps that the actors on the show had incredible chemistry with each other (I would also consider HellDream and DreamMuse as other potentials because yeah he looked like he was about to make out with those two actresses).

SnowBaz: I still have so much love for SnowBaz. This was the pair that got me through a massive depression/writing slump. Seriously guys, read Wayward Son and Any Way The Wind Blows if you want an accurate representation about depression and intimacy problems and just finding yourself once that biggest event of your life is over. It's about learning to live after trauma and how to heal. Plus this was also the first CANON queer couple I read and helped me to become comfortable with my own queer identity. Yeah... I may move on and have other loves, but Simon and Baz will always hold an irreplaceable part of my heart.

Tie between Ineffable Husbands and BlackBonnet: These are two very new relationships and I just love them both so much. I don't know much about BlackBonnet, because I've only seen gifs of the second season and nothing more, but from what I've seen, omg I am so excited. As for Ineffable Husbands, they are SO interesting to me and I have been enjoying reading the Metas that have been coming out after the second season. It's so interesting to me, to connect this to SnowBaz, to see the reactions after the second season aired. It reminds me A LOT of the explosion that occurred after Wayward Son was released (an explosion that not only continued the closer we got to AWTWB being released, but also contributed to Rainbow Rowell leaving Twitter). I'm not going to get too deep into this (though @carryonsimoncarryonbaz has been trying to convince to write a meta comparing the two because MY GOD ARE THERE SO MANY CONNECTIONS).

2. First ever ship: Honestly? Sailor Mercury/That boyfriend she had... what was his name? Greg? I thought they were so flipping cute. Plus I liked that the nerdy girl had someone who thought she was cute. As the Nerdy Girl myself, it made me happy to see.

3. Last song:

Fegari - Natasa Theodoridou: One of my favourite Greek songs. I've been in a Greek music mood as of late, and this is a beautiful song. It's about a woman who prays to the moon to bring her husband back from his mistress, and to watch over him if she can't. She also asks the moon to take her from the Earth so that she may see her husband from above.

At least... that's what my husband tells me. Greek music is so morose you guys.

4. Last movie: I watched Barbie last week with my husband. We both loved it so much. It's such a great dark comedy.

5. Currently reading: Lots of fanfiction, but I recently bought a beautiful Jane Austen collection, as well as an illustrated collection of poems by Rumi, so I want to dive into those.

6. Currently watching: My husband on the couch. But in all seriousness, we're probably going to watch either Our Flag Means Death or Silo next.

7. Currently eating: Nothing, but I am craving some cereal.

Hey! Can you rec your favourite snowbaz fics? I keep seeing some posts in between that mention them and i am curious of the names. (Also I know a lot of people in fandom who refused to read the other two books but pls give them a shot. Awtwb is my fav, even more than CO!!)

HELL YEAH I CAN!!!!!!! ive had people ask me for byler fic recs and i couldnt even give them an answer bc literally the only fanfiction i ever read is snowbaz. ive read maybe 4 byler fics total but i read snowbaz fics multiple times a week which is honestly crazy considering i first read the book like 7 years ago and im still wanting more content every day.

most of these arent that long bc i personally like to read something i can read in one sitting or at most 2-3 days. but if you do want a wholeass novel boy do i have an author for you (philaetos).

this is one of my favorite fics ever and its also by one of my favorite authors. its an au but theres still magic. simon and baz are in this never ending cycle of constantly being reincarnated in a new life together. theyre always rivals and simon always ends up killing baz but every life the situation for why theyre rivals is different. (this isnt a spoiler you find out pretty soon) the reason for this is that the first time simon killed baz he begged fate, who is like an actual personified thing you can talk to, to give him another chance so she “spun the wheel” and allowed him to be able to have another chance every time he messes up and kills him. so theyve been reincarnated for like centuries. its so good that i wish it was a whole book with completely new characters. i hope this author some day actually write a novel like this i love the plot so fucking much. it kinda reminds me of the show dark which is my favorite show of all time.

also one of my favorite authors. they havent posted that much but everything they have i LOVE!!!!!!!! this one is my favorite tho. simon accidentally curses baz with a compulsion spell that forces him to do whatever anyone tells him to do and they work together with penny to try and create a counter spell for this ancient illegal spell that has no current counter. bazs life is pretty much ruined and hes really going through it but simon helps him. lots of hurt/comfort. i really loved this one.

my favorite kinds of snowbaz fics are ones with a spell gone wrong and this is one of those. someone casts a spell that makes everyone whos within ten feet of someone theyre in love with have an alarm go off in their heart announcing their love. so baz is fucked and hes avoiding simon at all costs its really fun (not for him).

this one SLAPS simon gets slashed by a goblin in the leg and the only way baz could help is with the kiss it better spell but hes so scared to do it bc he has to kiss the wound and ya know vampire and all that. i love this one.

another banger by this author. its just late night conversations between the two of them and they slowly become more and more friendly and open up to each other more and more.

i fucking LOVE philaetos theyre fantastic. this one takes place right after baz gets back from being kidnapped and it really explores his trauma bc the book really brushed over the fact that he was literally locked in a coffin for over a month. so this is simon and baz slowly becoming friends and simon noticing that somethings definitely wrong with baz. i also like fics where simon finds out baz is gay well before they get together and that happens in this one.

this one everythings the same but baz has extremely bad internalized homophobia. i havent seen any other fics that arent aus explore this concept and i wish more people wrote it its an interesting take. baz honestly reminds me of mike in this fic.

another classic fucked up spell trope. baz is spelled to tell the truth if hes hiding something he wants to tell someone so naturally he avoids everyone at all costs for weeks

i could recommend so much more honestly there are so many talented writers in this fandom. about the second and third books, im glad you loved them but i honestly will probably never read them for the same reason as me not finishing philaetos’ fics. im here for the slow burn i really dont care about established relationship that much when it comes to enemies to lovers (friends to lovers i eat it up but enemies i just love the angst). and i know they break up in the second book and i just KNOW id put the book down the second they do and never pick it up again even tho i know they get back together eventually. i just think carry on was perfect and i dont want anything to risk ruining it.
