Also, "I hadn't meant to slay that dragon"!!! 11yo Simon killing the dragon on accident, presumably because he was 11 or 12 and panicked, and then everyone praises him for it and people (the mage) using it to treat him like he's so grown up!!! And he has dreams (probably nightmares) about it!!!! How would that not mess someone up??? Simon "living weapon" Snow starting early, both in life and book pacing (literally page one in my copy).

AWTWB Fan Illustrated Edition!!

Heyo! I’m back! With the final (for now) instalment of my makeshift illustrated editions. This one is for the third and my personal favorite book in the Simon Snow Series, Any Way the Wind Blow by the amazing @rainbowrowell!!

Just like last time if you’re tagged, your art is in it!

This is essentially me putting the art pieces to the lines in the book to show the beautiful words and the beautiful art at once.

DISCLAIMER!!! This time, I managed to find out my local library allows me to print pages of colored documents for only 10 cents (woot woot) so the image quality is much better. HOWEVER, if you don’t see an art piece you believe should be on there or have seen before or even made, it is not because I don’t like the art or artist, it’s because I simply missed it when finding art or forgot to put it on a page to print.

This was by far the hardest one to complete, it took a total of 6 and a half months to complete. Two months to find all the art, 3 to glue it all in, 1 month taking photos and labeling, and a half month putting it all in collages and creating the artist credits.

AND IT WAS WORTH IT!! it looks great and it’s amazing to see all the art next to their source material.

Just like the other two times, each piece has a number on it that correlates to the credit page

Things about AWTWB that I forgot about or just noticed for the first time, upon a recent re-listen:

Lady Ruth as an unreliable narrator: “I’m not one to hold grudges” but next page “I would dance on his grave and throw a fiesta and then resurrect him so I could kill him again” (My poor paraphrase) 

Baz, about vampires: “They’re less like murderers - more like sexy bedbugs” 

Baz, about Petra and Sophie: “I thought twins were supposed to be best friends, but all they do is eat jam and butter sandwiches and throw things at each other" (Me, adding to my Jelly Babies notes folder: “Yup, that tracks”)

I’m not crazy… Penny really is a year younger than the rest of them (thought I was mixing this up with Hermione)

LUCY also started Watford a year early fsalkjsadsjlkfsdljkdfs (now I have to go back and fix my timelines for Rosethorn girl, FUCK) 

Just like Lady Ruth, Mitali hoped that Lucy would come out of hiding after the Mage died (just stab me harder in the heart, Rainbow)

I'll ease up with the questions after this I promise and you can ignore this too but

I was wondering if Simon will ever have a closer or more comfortable relationship with his future siblings in-laws? It's clear those kids love their big brother Baz A LOT so Simon has that in common with them. I really loved how hard he was trying to make a good impression on them in SFC. Will they all have a nice relationship?

Also Swithin calling Simon a bird gave me life.

From my EGF fic, appropriately titled 'Double Your Pleasure,'

Baz closes his eyes and focuses hard on his words. “Double Your Pleasure,” he speaks, and I can feel the hum of his magic in the words. 

There’s a muffled popping noise and a faint odour of brimstone, and suddenly, I’m staring into the startled eyes of…myself?

From Saving Simon Snow:

If the performance of the ritual wasn’t striking, the actual effect of it was, extremely so. The moment I spoke magic into the ritual words, Simon and Baz went rigid. Their hands, clasped for the ceremony, broke apart and they each jumped back and stared. 

“So much pain…” Baz says, almost inaudibly. Then, louder, “How can you bear it, Snow?”

Simultaneously, Simon says, “Why are you feeling so terrified, Baz? You’re the one that forced us into this!”

“Wait…” I look between the two. Simon’s face is shadowed, but I don’t particularly see signs of pain in it. And Basil looks sad, but not scared. How are they—

“You could feel each other?” I stare, aghast, as the puzzle pieces click together in my mind. “How? That’s not part of the spell, is it?”

Just a tease from Westward Son:

I cast “As You Were,” and drop to my knees with a gasp, feeling absolutely drained; magickally, physically and sexually. Simon teeters in place for a moment and then falls to his side without even trying to catch himself.

And a slightly longer tease from Raising Dragons:

Simon’s obedient, fortunately. For him, I mean. I’d rather have enjoyed punishing him for disobedience, actually 

I wriggle my purchase free from its plastic prison and then give it an experimental stretch. It pops back into shape loudly, with a sound like a waistband being snapped. Simon jumps, and I see his eyelids quiver, but he keeps them closed. I smile. Good.

And a longer bit from The White Chapel, which I'm thinking will not be my COTTA after all, because it's almost done, and I'd rather not wait a year to post it, lol. But now I'm thinking of an American Revolution AU, with tory Baz and rebel Simon 😉

Simon looks devastated at my attack, and I feel a pang of regret. But he rallies to answer me, looking so bright and beautiful in his pain and courage. “I don’t know,” he admits softly. “This hasn’t ever happened before. Not in all the centuries I’ve been alive.”

I turn my back to him. I refuse to countenance this lunacy, even if I can’t quite suppress a shiver at the word ‘centuries’. “Well it did happen,” I say, my voice jagged, speaking to the wall in front of me. 

Simon’s response comes as if it’s travelling down a long tunnel to get to me. “I love you, Baz. I’ll love you forever…” His words seem to trail off as his voice becomes more distant. There’s an odd note of finality in it. 

In sudden terror, I spin back to face him. He’s still there, but less than he was before. He’s an outline, a Simon-shape made of glowing light. 

And finally, from my House AU, which now has a title! To Heal a Broken Mind:

We’re silent in the elevator together. Baz does live on the top floor, it turns out. So his flat is probably one of the most expensive here. I scowl. He probably lives in a fucking home of the future, with everything white and sterile and powered by artificial intelligence or something. I don’t think I could bear that kind of atmosphere for sixteen hours a day. Those days I spent in the hospital were miserable enough, and they weren’t helped by the fact that all I had to look at day in and day out were white walls, white sheets, white pillows. White white white. 

So, as if six WIPs weren't enough...I just got an idea for this year's COBB. No teasers, yet, I don't want to give any hints to the potential artists, but it's a genre I've always wanted to try!

No character has alerted me to the fact that I am completely unprepared for emotional vulnerability the way that Baz Grimm Pitch has. If I spent years longing for someone, hid that longing under layer upon layer of resentment, finally got to be with them and explain the intricacies of that longing, only for them to break up with me in the long run I'd never speak to them again. I love Simon Snow, but he would never see me again in his lifetime. Especially not if that longing and desperation manifested itself into me declaring that nothing else is as important as our relationship. Especially not if I had to beg him not to end things. And then the next time they talk he says that he never even tried. I'd be gone. I'd cease to exist. In that moment. I can't believe Baz ends the conversation happy after that. I understand that Simon was just being real, but I could never be honest with him again and I may need to seek therapy for that.

Thinking about AWTWB from the lens of Promise by Laufey…

“It hurts to be something

It’s worse to be nothing with you”

This song could easily fit either Simon or Baz’s POV but honestly if I were to choose, even though my first thought was Baz, this song fits so much better from Simon’s pov.

“I’ve done the math

There’s no solution

We’ll never last

Why can’t I let go of this?”

This verse especially screams Simon giving up before he’s even started, because he never thought he’d get to keep Baz. He wants to, god does he want to, but he’s so scared of the end that he just skips right to it.

The whole song just feels so strongly like Simon’s struggle throughout the book, desperately trying to cut himself off from Baz thinking it’s for the best (even though it really isn’t, he just needs help).

Actually you know what ok I had a realization and made this little connection/comparison in my head and gonna drop a bit of a controversial take here but tl;Dr is this: I hope Neil Gaiman really does know what he's doing because Rainbow Rowell didn't.

Spoilers for Good Omens 2 and Carry On series ahead.

My silly terrible brain just connected these two things together, Good Omens 2 and Simon Snow/Wayward Son.

What do these have in common? A LOT.

Both are sequels which were improbable and yet happened.

Both are in this weird after place where the main characters saved the day/averted end of the world and now they don't know what to do with themselves. They are slightly broken, want to fall into some routine, but they can't.

Therefore, 3, everything is a mess. A big mess. Chaos is brewing all around them from outside forces they don't understand. They don't know what to do but keep carrying on, keep moving forward.

When I first read Wayward Son I thought it was a chaotic mess. It didn't answer any of the true questions and address any real loose ends. I reread it, and thought, wait maybe, just MAYBE, it's on purpose! It's a mess on purpose and then in the next installment we'll get the real answers, SIMON WILL. FIND OUT SOMEHOW SOMEHOW HE'S ROSEBUD BOY! He'll "get his magic back", or rather, get real magic once the literal dead zone inside him heals because the ones he made do so why not in himself? He'll deal with the aftermath of The Mage's estate. ALL THE THINGS! Guess what? NONE OF THAT HAPPENED IN ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS.

All this to say, dear God, don't let me down, Neil.

Carry On/Wayward Son spoilers

You ever think that in an alternate Carry On reality, Lucy would've left Davy and raised Simon as a single mum. Mitali and Lucy would stay friends which would mean Penny and Simon would've been childhood friends. Maybe Lucy would join Lady Ruth and go to Mrs Wellbelove's parties and maybe Agatha and Simon would've been childhood friends. Baz would've grown up with a mum and maybe Simon wouldn't think he's always plotting. I think Lucy would've tried to befriend Natasha because the crucible casted their sons together. And maybe, just maybe, Mitali would still have Lucy.
