In the episode Thawfest, there was a moment where Snotlout and Hiccup were bickering and insulting each other and once Snotlout left after Hiccup roasted him, Astrid gave him a disappointed glare to which Hiccup said, "He started it! When we were five."
This was probably said in the context of Snotlout always winning the Thawfest games and rubbing it in. But consider, it could also imply that Snotlout started being a jerk to others, especially to Hiccup, when they were five.
What about before they were five? Children are innocent and most of the negativity they have is picked up from the environment. We all know how Spitelout is. Chances are, his words and lessons effectively started to show results of the impact on Snotlout's behavior and personality when he was old enough to soak it up and act on it.
And if that were the case, before they turned five, when they were younger, Snotlout didn't use to be the way Spitelout was raising him to be.
Before he and Hiccup turned five, Snotlout was probably nice and kind.
Do they both still remember the times when they were toddlers and used to play with each other? Two cousins just having fun together, squeals and laughter ringing out. Did Hiccup use to make silly jokes at Snotlout? Did Snotlout look out for his much smaller cousin?
Was there a time before Spitelout pulled him away, when Hiccup and Snotlout used to be very close friends?

HTTYD Sibling/Family Relationships
Some things I wish we got more of in the franchise are A) family relationships, and B) other young people in Berk who are older or younger than the main 6 riders and Gustav.
We didn't, so here's my headcanons.
First one isn't very original because in the books Snotlout and Hiccup are related and Snotlout says he's "next in line" in THW but I would love it if Spitelout and Stoick were canonically brothers (or brothers-in-law!!!), making Hiccup and Snotlout cousins too. I want Hiccup and Snotlout, despite being only-children, to have grown up like brothers who can't stand each other. Before the events of HTTYD, Snotlout teases Hiccup about how he'll usurp him, but when Hiccup trains Toothless, the rivalry becomes even worse, as Snotlout finds himself in second place - this already happens to a certain extent in RoB/DoB, but now it's more pronounced. Them improving their relationship and avoiding the pitfalls of Stoick and Spitelout's rivalry is even more meaningful. Also as we know from comments Snotlout has made about sewing, his mother is a sweet lady who teaches her son crafts. Too good for Spitelout, tbh. Would be nice if she were also a fierce fighter who is super good at sewing too.
Fishlegs is a very protective older brother to a younger sister who is similarly sensitive and sweet. He, however, stops being sweet the second anyone poses emotional or physical danger to her. He loves taking her flying on Meatlug when she's still too small for her own dragon, and he's always teaching her dragon facts. I think his parents are very sweet as well. His mom is a super tall and busty Viking lady very while his dad is smaller. They're both sheep and yak farmers and not really the warrior type. Fishlegs got his love of animals from growing up on a farm.
Astrid is the youngest of at least 3 older siblings (either brothers or sisters, doesn't matter) who are all very accomplished. Each excels in either strength, intelligence, or stealth, but they're all pretty brave fighters in general. (I'm thinking she has at least one brother who is very strong but not super bright - big himbo energy. Ruffnut probably has a crush on him, and it creeps Astrid out). As the youngest, Astrid feels like she has to live up to and exceed all of their abilities. She also *hates* being the baby of the family, which is why she's so aggressive. One of her parents is doting (probably does something in crafting) while the other is very intense (a warrior).
Ruffnut and Tuffnut are the middle siblings of a huge-ass family and have lots of extended family as well. Literally everyone in their family is chaotic as hell in their own unique, Thorston way. They do everything from farming, fishing, smithing, fighting, etc, because there are so many of them. Berk is already a small community, and it's very common to have at least one Thorston relative somewhere in your family. Eventually, they have to identify Thorstons by jobs, landmarks, or well-known events (Those are the Baker Thorstons, or the Cliffside Thorstons, or the Thorstons-that-Ruined-Snoggletog, etc.)

HTTYD AU idea that I’ll never write because I have too many projects, one a personal rewrite of the HTTYD universe following a potential outcome where the kids all follow Hiccup into exile via dragon back, and speed running the events of RoB, DoB, and RTTE in the span of a few years. ANYWAYS
Snotlout and Hiccup are cousins, but Spitelout, being Spitelout, starts dropping earworms in Snotlout’s ears about how Hiccup will never be Chief, being too small and sickly and un-vikingkly. Only this is when Snotlout and Hiccup are smol, and somewhat close-ish, as little kids tend to be before they get older and start developing an awareness of their surroundings.
Baby Snotlout hears this and comes to the five-year old child logical conclusion that he must protect his smaller cousin from everyone who might hurt him, so he can have the chance to grow up big and strong like everyone else, and be the bestest chief ever!
Snotlout earns a reputation of biting any adult or child who comes within three feet of Hiccup. Not even Stoick is safe from this treatment. Snotlout bit and got into a five-year old child’s equivalent of a fistfight with a sheep that accidentally knocked Hiccup over. No one’s safe. He insists he is protecting the tribes future awesome and amazing chief.
The years pass on. Snotlout is still stubbornly protecting his cousin, but as they get older it’s different. He grows to learn that his cousin is just small, but Snotlout is adamant Hiccup will be a great chief. Because he has a witty tongue that leave adults flabbergasted, and is slippery when the other kids start picking on him, and Hiccup will have Snotlout, who will obviously grow to take his own fathers place as general, and so that means he can just protect Hiccup from all the bigger scary stuff like rival chiefs and dragons so Hiccup can be Chief without worry.
Hiccup does not get relentlessly bullied because his brawny, overprotective cousin throws hands at any slight insult to Hiccup. Hiccup learns how to talk down people from other tribes who aren’t so persuasive much earlier than he does in the show because some boy from another tribe gave him a funny look and his stupidly loyal cousin ran across the room to try and throw him into a table.
When Hiccup thinks he shot down a Night Fury, none of the kids say anything mean spirited about the chaos that followed, because Nsorlout had made a reputation. When they start dragon training, Snotlout and Hiccup get the lowest marks at first because Snotlout heard “Grab a shield” and decided to use himself as a shield for Hiccup, which his cousin does NOT like
It is not Astrid that gets taken out on a flight on the back of a Night Fury, but Snotlout, who wondered where his cousin was spending his free time, because Snotlout at least understands privacy and isn’t hovering over Hiccup 24/7, but also saw how pissed Astrid was at losing and came to find his cousin before she did so she wouldn’t try anything. It is Snotlout, clutching his cousin and screaming as a dragon tries to kill him on his back, because his cousin is his best friend and he has decided he doesn’t want to share. Snotlout is nervous later about the Monstrous Nightmare that his cousin leads to his open hand, but he trusts his cousin, and so touches the dragon.
Snotlout and Toothless do not get along at first, Snotlout protective of his cousin and Toothless protective of his best friend and neither of them wanting to share with the other. Hiccup walks around a corner to see the pair of them going at it with each other, because they couldn’t agree on who was going to follow Hiccup and make sure he was safe. The day Toothless and Snotlout finally start getting along is the day Hocvup realizes he will never know peace again, because there is a Night Fury and his stubborn cousin who’d fistfight Odin if he so much as looked at Hiccup wrong, and of course a Monstrous Nightmare, because Hookfang isn’t going anywhere without Snotlout, so he too is also following Hicvup and making sure he’s safe. Hiccup eventually reminds himself of the alternative and forces himself to live with his two and a half protective, self-appointed bodyguards.
Snotlout is stubborn and loyal and has a very hard time letting Hiccup defend himself in a physical manner at first, but learns to let Hiccup fight his own battles. So long as Snotlout and Hookfang are nearby in case someone fights dirty or cheats or Hiccup has a bad day and decides to let his cousin have at it. He doesn’t once think of trying to become Chief, and Spitelout doesn’t know what to do with a son that refuses to try and take leadership because he’s too darn determined to make sure his scrawny fishbone cousin grows to be Berks Chief. And he can’t complain about it because it’s kinda all his fault anyways.

Thinking about how Snotlout became Berks official weapons tester. As much as it fits him it also feels like it doesn’t?? I kinda wanna write a post-DOB/pre-RTTE fic where Snotlout is out of control and Stoick makes him Gobber’s new apprentice and gives him the title “weapons tester” to try and keep him out of trouble. Gobber is NOT happy because not only is Snotlout the most annoying person on Berk but he also holds a pretty big grudge against Snotlout for how he used to treat Hiccup. The fic would basically be enemies to mentor and apprentice with Gobber eventually replacing Spitelout as Snotlout’s father figure.
What do you think?
I love it! Gobber already seems like a father figure to Hiccup, so what's one more? I could see Gobber feeling for Snotlout once he begins to open up to him. And, Gobber is canonically gay, and Snotlout is probably queer in one way or another. I could definitely see them bonding over that, because that would definitely be something Snotlout would have to hide from his father.
Gobber, adopt Snotlout now.

Not enough people talk about how beautifully RttE's 'Darkest Night' and 'King of Dragons' flows into Httyd 2.
Because I've seen people call RttE!Hiccup out of character and one of the reasons given is that he's not against his position as the Heir of Berk and for even defending his future position as Chief. Httyd 2 clearly shows Hiccup's hesitance, he's not sure if he's cut out to be chief, so what gives? But RttE does give us the beginning of that doubt.
And it starts in the episode; 'Darkest Night.'
It's the episode in which Stoick is ambushed by the Dragon Flyers and ends up gravely injured with Gothi not certain if he's going to make it. Naturally, Hiccup is inconsolable, not even Toothless manages to cheer him up. It's to the point that his Riders' attempts at making him laugh and distracting him is met with anger and a tirade and Hiccup admitting that he blames himself and that he can see that everyone thinks that way. Not just Gobber, Toothless, or the Riders, but everyone. As in, all of Berk.
Whether it's actually true or not, we don't know as we never get to see Berk's reaction to Stoick's fate, but it's certainly the way Hiccup feels.
(Which... Honestly, you could theorize that Hiccup believing his village blames him could harken back to how he was blamed for the loss of Berk's gold and how he was blamed in Httyd 1 or how Berk ganged up on Toothless that one episode. But that's for another post.)
Cut to the second final episode, 'King of Dragons, Part 1,' in which Spitelout, who is part of the council, is sent to personally drag Hiccup back to Berk after the council has decided that someone needs to succeed Stoick now. Sure, Spitelout was there to bring back an Acting Chief, but before even bringing up that Hiccup was voted for the role, he told him that Stoick was getting worse.
Hiccup was to take up his role as Acting Chief and, in the very possible event that Stoick should die, was supposed to succeed him. In that case, they wouldn't even need to wait for Hiccup to come back, he could step right up.
That's... incredibly traumatizing. And let's not forget the very first time Hiccup was called upon to be Acting Chief and it's when Stoick was taken for ransom by Dagur the Deranged and the very likely possibility of Stoick's death was present there as well and even threatened.
So yeah, it's not so surprising that Hiccup, or some part inside of himself, has begun to equate becoming chief to losing his father. This leads to doubts to whether he's cut out to be chief at all as his immediate response to having the Chief Talk with his father is to escape out the door and flee Berk to do something that brings him comfort; flying and exploring with Toothless. He literally goes on a comfort flight away from home to avoid even talking about chiefdom with his father.
But Hiccup wasn't the only one left haunted by Stoick's near demise as, a year later, Stoick is thinking of stepping down and letting a certain someone take over the reigns.
Throughout RttE, Hiccup has unknowingly shown his father that he can both run a team as well as an island. It's not the size of a whole village, but Stoick is proud and this leads him to believe that his son is ready to succeed him soon. He's seen him build a base and defend it, divide the workload, come up with strategies, and most importantly, delegate with unhappy Riders. Something he couldn't yet do back in RoB and DoB.
(Stoick's "that's what a chief does, he delegates" comes to mind as well as Stoick advising Hiccup on how to deal with his Astrid V Snotlout problem.)
And then Stoick is ambushed and he nearly dies. Suddenly, the reality that Hiccup will have to succeed him soon becomes very real.
But Hiccup doesn't become Chief after RttE and it's barely a conversation a whole year later in Httyd 2. And at this point, Hiccup is actively running away from chiefdom. So what's the point of Stoick retiring now when Hiccup wants nothing to do with becoming chief? Even Gobber doesn't think Hiccup ready yet. And as Httyd 1 has proven, Gobber will talk Hiccup.
(The "every bit the boarheaded stubborn Viking you were" comes to mind as well as Gobber suggesting Hiccup join dragon training at all.)
Stoick could be making it a point to have his son succeed him when he's still able to chief himself. Hiccup can ascend knowing his father is right there to guide him, no need to lose him first.
And then, of course, Hiccup's worst fear does come true. He does become chief in the wake of his father's death.

First Wife Before Valka? (HTTYD Headcanon/Theory)
Tumblr media
Hello everyone, and welcome to my next HTTYD article. Today’s topic, we’ll dive into my headcanon and theory of Stoick having been a widower by the time he meets Valka.
Now you’re probably wondering why I’m even thinking that, because, surely, Valka was his one and only. However, I must emphasize their ten-year age gap. They would’ve probably married around... 18/19 and 28/29, respectively (assuming they haven’t had any miscarriages before Hiccup, then most likely 19); Hiccup would’ve been born when Valka was 20 and Stoick was 30.
Even if you discount historical accuracy and write this world off as a fantasy world, we also cannot ignore the historical implements implied or otherwise entailed in this world as well. For example, I find it extremely hard to believe that Stoick didn’t marry at all until he married Valka. Especially when Vikings live supposedly short and dangerous lives. That just stretches plausibility too far.
Let me return you to the final episode of DoB “Cast Out” where Alvin goes into detail concerning his and Stoick’s past. (I will go into more detail concerning Alvin’s past in a later article.)
Tumblr media
Judging from how Alvin talks, it’s very likely that one of those “injuries” was Stoick’s father, who was the chief during that time, which would greatly explain Alvin’s eventual banishment from Berk as an Outcast.
If this did, indeed, result in his father’s untimely death, then Stoick would’ve had to have taken up the mantle as Berk’s next chief. Gobber even goes as far to say earlier in the same episode:
Tumblr media
Guessing by the dialogue, there seems to be an implication that Stoick was probably somewhere between 16-20 years of age when he became Chief. Young enough to be inexperienced and having difficulties of having suddenly having this position of responsibility thrusted upon him unfairly by Life and Fate.
Since Dreamworks has a habit of omitting family members out for animation reasons, I believe he has other family members besides himself. I, personally, use the Book Stoick reference, where he has a younger brother and several sisters.
Regardless of whether he has several siblings and relatives or whether he’s an only child, the fact remains that there would’ve been serious pressure put on him to find himself a wife and produce an heir. After all, most Vikings live short lives to begin with, as stated and reinforced by the Twins explanation in RTTE Season 5 episode 5 “A Matter of Perspective”.
Tumblr media
With this in mind, not to mention the ever-growing number of dragon raids, there would’ve been immense pressure to produce an heir before something bad should befall Stoick as well.
He could’ve very well have been in his early twenties, like Hiccup, when he got married. As to who married him, well... that’s honestly up in the air, and up to the readers as well. If Spitelout had a sister, Stoick could’ve married her, which would tickle any “Cousin! Snotlout” backers out there. And it would explain the “in-law” vibes they (Stoick and Spitelout) give off.
Or it could’ve been some random woman.
However, this is where we dive into my own personal headcanon as to Stoick’s marital background.
My Headcanon and Backstory for Stoick’s First Wife
After Alvin was banished, Alvin’s family figured it was time to leave Berk because of the dishonor their family suffered by Alvin’s actions. While it was a common unspoken law that families were exempt from discrimination from a former member’s crimes, the death of a rather popular and experienced leader so suddenly due to their son’s insubordination really hit many the wrong way, and there were many who resented them and blamed their lack of parenting/discipline in Alvin’s conduct.
So, Alvin’s family decided to leave Berk. In doing so, they had also hoped to marry their daughter off to a good family outside of Berk, since no one would take her now after Alvin’s outlawry. As they were prepping themselves for the journey in the middle of the night, they also came to Stoick to tell them the news of their departure, once again apologizing for the misdeeds of their son. Stoick waves it off and says that he is only sorry that he couldn’t stop them from leaving, having viewed them as a second family to him.
When he was told that Alvin’s sister would marry outside of Berk, feeling somewhat responsible for her current circumstances, he discusses the matter with them and asks for their daughter’s hand in marriage, honestly shocking everyone. They ask Alvin’s sister whether she consents to the match, or if she would rather go with them and find a suitor elsewhere. She, after some pondering, wishes to accept Stoick’s hand, saying that she bore him no ill will for Alvin’s banishment, and that it would be better to marry someone she knows and respects, even if that means staying behind and having to deal with their neighbors’ resentment. In her heart, she doesn’t want to leave the island of her birth, regardless of what the circumstances or outcome will be.
Her parents respect her decision and agree to the match, deciding to remain until they’re wed. While the populace is generally unhappy with the union, the promise of feasting and food caused them to push it aside and enjoy the merriment. Once the knot is tied, they are officially married, and Alvin’s parents decide that it’s time to leave, and wish them good fortune and blessings aplenty before departing. And they sail out of this saga.
As Stoick continues to prove his mettle to the people, the Berkians have a change of heart and view him with pride and approval, and now trust him as a capable leader, with the potential to even rival if not surpass his father before him. And Alvin’s sister continues to encourage him and take care of him as he learns and improves on his chiefing duties. Aside from their honeymoon, they’ve been unable to copulate due to his increasing responsibilities as well as the dragon raids. It’s not until the harvest ends that he’s able to rest and give her some proper attention. Time for Operation Produce-An-Heir!
When told that she’s pregnant with his child, six months later, everyone is joyous, and starts to look favorably on her since there is hope that the Haddock line will continue and they can finally relax.
However, in the final two weeks of her incubation, she gets sick; complications arise and the baby comes sooner than expected. After 6 hours, she is very weak, but the baby was able to make it. It’s a son! The joyous news was short-lived, however, Alvin’s sister’s illness turns to phenomena, and she succumbs to it, passing away. The baby ends up dying the next day because of internal complications that the midwives can’t understand (due to lack of modern technology). And Alvin’s sister eventually succumbed to her illness and now grief and passed away not long after.
As Stoick reels from the disastrous double news, the Berkians, while sympathetic and distraught over their deaths, start whispering superstitiously amongst themselves, believing that the gods must be punishing him after all for having married the sister of his father’s killer.
Once their funerals have concluded, Stoick requested for two rune-stones to be carved and erected in memory of his wife and child and have them be located behind the house. He was 21 when he was engaged to Alvin’s sister, and she was 19; they were 22 and 20, respectively, when they married. They’ve been married for 2 years. She and their child died when he was almost 25.
Headcanon & Backstory For Stoick Meeting Valka
Three years later, pressure again to marry comes up again. One day, when Stoick goes to the Althing to attend the Chieftains’ Council, he meets Old Wrinkly and his family along the way as they help them fend off pirates. He was almost killed by an Outcast’s blade as he was busy fighting two others, but the pirate was intercepted by Valka, Old Wrinkly’s eldest daughter, saving Stoick’s life. They continue to fight together until the pirates are defeated.
Old Wrinkly thanks him and introduces himself and his family, and also Valka, to Stoick, and they embrace in kinship, travelling together until they reached the Althing. While there, as Old Wrinkly, his sons, and Stoick drink mead together, the former wonders whether Stoick would be willing to enter a match with his eldest daughter, Valka, and Stoick says that he wouldn’t mind at all. And a deal is struck. Old Wrinkly warns him that they have not had problems with the dragons, and ask for his tolerance that she won’t share in the anti-dragon views of Berk. Stoick says that it’s fine, as he also has secret hopes that they can end the dragon wars and be at war no more.
Stoick and Valka get engaged when they’re 28 and 18, respectively; they get married several months later. Valka gets pregnant with Hiccup at 19, and, while he was born three months earlier than he should’ve, is born healthy, and Hiccup is gifted to them at 30 and verge-of-20, respectively. Stoick and Valka still visit the rune-stones of his first wife and child, even well after Valka leaves a-questing for the Home of Dragons.
When he’s growing up, upon learning of his dead kin, Hiccup would go visit the stones as well, often talking to them and looking after them. Whenever the paint comes off, he adds a fresh coat of it onto the runes. He even plants some flowers in front and around the stones to give it some cheer and color. Even though Stoick refuses to talk about them, Hiccup loves them dearly, and wishes that he could’ve met them at least once, and wonders what it would’ve been like to have an older sibling. When he’s fully grown and a Chieftain himself, he commissions the Berserkers to give him stone for him to build a family temple of sorts to house the rune-stones of not only Stoick’s first wife and child, but Stoick’s father as well, along with any of his own children who die prematurely, in order that the rune-stones will always be preserved, away from the natural elements, and to have it be the family’s memorial shrine. ^_^
Conclusion
So, in conclusion, I do not believe that Valka was Stoick’s first marriage, since the age gap is glaringly too wide for this to be the case. Regardless if this was a fantasy world that is not built on historical or real-life references, I highly doubt that his people and the council would’ve allowed him to rule for almost 10 years (if not 10 years if he ruled at 18 instead of 20-something) without marrying and begetting an heir to stabilize Berk’s security for the future as dragon raids and even conflicts with other humans continue to increase. Especially during a time when he could die at any moment by dragon, by circumstance, by nature, or by man.
So my theory is that Stoick married the first time long before he met Valka and married her. As to whom did he marry, well... it’s honestly up to you. It could be Spitelout’s sister, it could be a random woman, it could be anyone. Heck, it could even be Osvald the Agreeable’s sister for all we know!
For me, my headcanon is that it’s Alvin’s sister (OC), not long after Alvin’s banishment. And the events thereafter that happen in later years. Plausible?
So what do you guys think? Do you think Stoick married once before Valka came along? I look forward to hear your thoughts! ^_^
Thank you so much for reading, and I hope to see you in my next article!
