Ohhhhhh that ending so solidified the anime adaptation in and of itself and made it very complete as a story (a little bit saddened since it doesn't feel like there might be season 2 with the way the ending changed from the the manga's plot points, at least not anytime soon until we get to some other arcs in the manga!)
Also ngl I kept re-watching some of the sign language scenes with Yuki and Itsu just because of how PRETTY the animation was for it. This anime honestly impressed me with the details in animation.
Man the anime did such a lovely job with its adaptation. I'd love to see at least an ONA or something with Yuki and Itsu and the gang giving us sign language lessons. I need to see more of them ughhhh.
I love A Sign of Affection sm y'all. This is my 10/10 anime this year.

The least believable part of the HTTYD books is that Hiccup knows at least four languages and he never mixes them up.

How many languages do you learn in Germany at school? Do you learn others apart from English like French or Italian ( I've seen you know those and I'm curious).
Oh I wouldn't say I really speak french or italian, I only speak bits and pieces. And the italian I do know I only know because my mom is italian so I didn't learn it in school.
I think it definitely depends on what school (and what kind of school because we have different types here where you graduate after different years) you go to.
I went to a school where I graduated after 13th grade and I had english as a compulsory subject grade 5 to 13. Took french as an elective in grade 7 and 8, spanish as an elective grade 9 and 10 and then latin grade 11 to 13. Those were pretty much all languages my school offered.
And my brother for example went to a better different school and had a whole list of languages to choose from, he was basically allowed to add one each year. He also took english as a compulsory subject grade 5 to 13, had spanish from grade 6 to 10, latin from grade 8 to 13 and also chose to learn chinese grade 11 to 13. I think he also started taking russian for a little bit at some point but I'm not sure what year and he dropped it pretty quickly because he had too many classes that year.
But as far as I know you need at least one foreign language (english counts even though it's a compulsory subject at most schools) to graduate after 10th grade. And you need at least 2 foreign languages to graduate after 13th grade (which I took final exams for in english and latin).
But yeah it's definitely dependant on what school you go to and probably also what state you live in. I live really close to france, like almost at the border, so pretty much all schools here push french really hard. And from what I heard from friends who have kids they teach english even earlier now and a lot of kids start having it as a subject in like 3rd grade already.

I will never forgive the English translation of the full "stay awhile you are so fair" quote because that is not the same meaning as in the original English and maybe I am wrong and maybe my English is not good enough for that or I'm interpreting this wrong but there is a difference between "bearing something", accepting your fate in a defeated way, even if you do not want to (idk bearing has a pretty negative connotation to be because it's more.... suffering adjacent? I suppose? To me at least) and accepting it in a way that reads like "if it comes to this then I am already beyond saving and I will gladly accept my impending ruin because I brought this upon myself and with that I will live" in German he uses the word "gerne" that means you accept something in a positive way and that you're fine with something and you have no problems with it and that got lost in the English interpretation and I know poetry is different and difficult because of metrics and wordflow and the having it sound right while not losing the intended meaning but it's such a shame to me because the people who don't know the original German can't go insane over Sanctuary the same way I do and that is just such a pity.

i'm fluent in my native tongue and in english but i actually did latin + modern languages in high school so i learned latin (duh), english, french and german! BUT unfortunately my french + german have gotten quite bad over the past few years :(( mainly bc i didn't keep them up after graduating high school and also all of uni + most of my hobbies + most of my social life are in english..... but maybe once i have some more free time i'll pick them up again!!

We are multilinguals, of course...
(Lets do this tiktok trend, in writing and late, because who gives a fuck, i certainly don't)
We are multilinguals, of course every website we are on asks us if we want it to be translated into another one of our languages.
We are multilinguals, of course we remember that specific word we are looking for in every language except the one we are currently speaking.
We are multilinguals, of course every website randomly decides what language it should be in.
We are multilinguals, of course we mix up our idioms on accident.
We are multilinguals, of course we mix up our idioms on purpose, 'cause its funny.
We are multilinguals, of course we don't know what language to use when answering the phone from an unknown number.
We are multilinguals, of course people who find out ask you to 'say something in that language', leaving us completly lost as to what to say.
We are multilinguals, of course every timne we write using word, the wrong language is used for correction.

Kaiser took French classes in school. He’s like, really bad at it but he makes the effort to learn cringe-y nicknames for Rocky
P. S. the French are kinda funny for it. They call each other cats, rabbits, wolves & all sort of other animals on top of strawberries. Not sure if an actual French person would find Kaiser’s name calling funny but it would definitely be annoying

I wish I had more time to study languages, because they all look so fun and nice and I want to talk to everyone in their native tongue, but I only have so much time. I currently only speak english (native) and german (b1), but I’m trying to pick up dutch, and I’m already looking at korean and arabic. why can I not have all the time for this, why does it have to take so long?
