I love how A Sign of Affection portrays Oushi's ableism. It's not in-your-face like people seem to think ableism is, it's subtler; a side-effect of systematic ableism and the patriarchy.

He thinks all deaf people should go somewhere out of the way to be "safe", doesn't understand why Yuki would go to college when she's deaf, assumes he knows Yuki's situations and relationships better than her, and thinks it's up to him to help and protect her without asking if she needs or even wants it.

Plus, "All he does is say mean things to me in sign"... why learn sign if he's just gonna be a jerk to her with it? You might argue that he's just being "realistic", but to someone who doesn't ask for it, it's being an ass. Not to mention he's incredibly dense and dismissive of how Yuki feels about his actions. HE might think he's being helpful, but it's clear that Yuki doesn't think so, and he either doesn't see it or doesn't care.

It very much reflects the ableism that disabled people experience all the time in the real world and you can REALLY tell who experiences ableism by people's opinions on Oushi because I'm seeing a LOT of people defending his actions, even calling them "romantic". But to people who know what ableism looks like, all we see is possessiveness, controlling, condescending ableism.

I'm curious to see how the series tackles it going forward; and whether they have him grow as a character and or get worse, I hope that more people recognize his actions and opinions for what they are: ableism, and a very accurate depiction of it.

Reading Volume 8 again of A Sign of Affection now that my copy of it finally arrived.

The fact that Itsuomi not only immediately agreed to Yuki's dad's request of going to the bathhouse with him to have a heart-on-heart conversation with his daughter's boyfriend, but he made sure to have a fun hang out with him and then to straight up confessing to her dad how much he cares for Yuki.

I fuckinf love him your honor we love Itsuomi Nagi in this goddamn shoujo household.

one thing i love about a sign of affection is that when they do flashbacks to the past or have youth photos, you can see that the characters once had very normal hair colors. but you see them now and it's like, yup, i'm a pink haired girlie after all 🥰 (i know in itsuomi's case, he lets shin experiment on him but what's yuki's excuse? LMAO)

i still do not like oushi at all but him and yuki's interaction in the train gave off bickering sibling vibes and i really wish they played off that more instead of making him such a jerk

And your first words with Yuki was THIS? You picked up sign language just to call Yuki a fool just because she was enjoying the fireworks despite she couldn't hear? How LAME. I can't even imagine how Yuki's childhood went with this prick around.

Here's the thing:

I can empathize with Emma to some degree. At the end of the day, she's just a girl with an intense crush on Itsuomi and constantly makes her feelings known to him hoping that one day, he'll feel the same way. Just peek high school girl behavior.

HOWEVER...

It has been literal years and Itsuomi has made it clear more than once that he is not interested and he's now in a relationship with Yuki. And Emma refuses to get the hint and even went as far as to try and make up a lie about spending the night with Itsuomi to chase Yuki away. So when she's at her job crying about how Itsuomi "ghosted" her over text, it's hard for me to feel even remotely bad for her.

Again, I feel for her on the "unrequited love" front. But for everything else, she needs to move on.

So glad they kept the one bisexual line from the manga in the anime.
