The Sapphire Sea
Artist: Arthur Melville (Scottish, 1855-1904)
Date: n. d.
Medium: Watercolour on paper
Collection: National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland
Description
Melville first visited the Spanish port of Pasajes, on the Atlantic coast near San Sebastián, in 1892. The steep-sided bay, surrounded by fishing boats and red-roofed houses, inspired some of his most radical paintings. Here he uses a dramatic vertical composition to contrast the intense blue sea and the dazzling white buildings. Melville was closely associated with the group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys. A highly original watercolourist, he painted in ‘blots and spots’ and used specially prepared paper to evoke brilliant colour and light.

Get Your Art Fix!

"A kind of golden hour one remembers for a life time… Everything was touched with magic." ~ Margaret Bourke-White
"SIESTA x FINCA 1.05pm" by Florian Innerkofler, 2022
Series: SIESTA x FINCA
Arty-Fact: SIESTA x FINCA is a photography series originally shot in 2014 and revisited in 2022. Set in a sun-drenched villa on the edge of Europe's only sand desert, it captures the quiet rhythm of a Mediterranean afternoon.
"With Cordula as my muse, we embraced the stillness of siesta - the time when the sun is high, cicadas hum, and the world slows down. Drifting through the villa’s sunlit spaces, we sought to reflect the effortless ease of a summer day. As the sun dipped lower, the allure of the pool beckoned - a moment of refreshment after the languid heat.
"This colour-blocked series transports you to Finca del Álamo in Southern Spain, where the golden hours stretch lazily, and the Moroccan coastline shimmers in the distance.” - Florian Innerkofler

every time i see a recreation of the madrid alcázar i go :(

#it looks so cool man i'm sure it was an incredible building#for those from outside of spain. this was the old imperial palace. it burned to the ground in like the 17th century or something like that#it was actually awful because it hosted the royal galleries which means there's thousands of art pieces and documents that have been lost#and not only from spain. unfortunately a big part of the royal galleries#were objects from the colonies#so ton of cultural precolombine heritage was also lost with the fire
