Designing the OSP Ships for Nebulous Fleet Command
A good long while ago, I had the honour to design the second faction for the supremely excellent game Nebulous Fleet Command. (Get it here, don't hesitate, what are you waiting for? Get the game!) That faction being the OSP. The OSP's main thing being, that almost their entire fleet is made up of retrofitted civilian ships, hastily pushed into service. Almost. The first ship on the design block was The Ocello class Command Cruiser. The idea behind it was, that it used to be a state of the art Warship, but that time had passed a good 100 years ago. Many of these were mothballed withing OSP territory, and quite frankly you don't look a fully armored 12000 ton gif horse in the mouth, when a battle hardened navy is knocking at your door asking "you and what army?"

From the Tip of the spear we move over to what was avaliable. Civvies. Not to fret though, what they lack in class, they make up for in mass, either by numbers or by tonnage. We'll start with the numbers first, and this is where we meet the clippers. Clippers are the small fry of vessels, shuttles tugs, transport feeders, the small guys of the blue collar world. This may not bless them with lots of armor, but they sure as heck makes up for it in versatility. The Design brief asked for everyday civilian vessels in the size range of 60 to 95 meters, so I gave it my best shot with this lot.

Ultimately only three of these made it into the game, to uphold the delicate balance of the amount of work it takes the team to actually make one of these ships happen and also the gameplay balance of what their exact roles are and wether or not they are redundant, gameplay wise. I think the Team went with the right vessels, and I would only lament that I'd love to have had the "Mantis" as well. This leads us to the final and perhaps most interesting subject: The Freighters. The design document asked for three distinct types of freighters: -Bulk Freighters -Container Freighter -Liquid Gas Freighters Adittionally these ships were meant to be Randomizable in two ways: -be made out of three interchangeable sections, front, middle, engine
-lots of little doodads, like bridges, cranes, tanks etc. So I got to work and these are the results: Bulk freighter base models:

Bulk Freighter with Doodads example:

Finally some remixed Bulk freighter Hulls:

This worked out quite well for my sensibilities, so I went along with the other designs. Base Container Freighters:

Versions with Doodads:

And finally the LNG Freighters You know the drill by now. Base models:

Doodad examples:

And finally some remix variants.

And that is all! What a great and wild ride! The LNG Freighters unfortunately also ended up on the chopping block, but it's also understandable why; there's just too much hollow tank on these, to make for anything useful in combat. There we are. One whole like diary entry about my short and super sweet work for Nebulous Fleet Command. The Team there is doing wonderful work, and it has been one of my proudest moments seeing my scribbles turn into actual things in a video game that you can use to fight with - surreal! Shoutout to Mazer Ludd for Commissioning me on this awesome project and of course to Stephmo for making such cool models from my puny drawings!

Would You Rather...
A: Lead an ark fleet of 100,000 refugees fleeing a cataclysmic continential destruction in a low magic fantasy world (you have no magic among you) to an unhinhabited continent on your choice of 100 tamed members of a (capable of realistically being abundant on this world IE not like, the world turtle from discworld or something) fictional non-sentient flying species (with enough supplies and equipment to make it, but only if not too much goes wrong) (with renaissance era technology, though you keep your current knowledge), if you make it and set everything up for the refugees to survive you may choose to return to the real world at the time you left it.
B: Lead a non-FTL capable ark ship (that can move 1 lightyear every 25 years at top speed) of 2.5 million refugees fleeing a cataclysmic planatery biosphere collapse in search of a new world, the ship is equipped with enough stasis pods for everyone and enough supplies to last 10 years out of stasis, as well as enough equipment to start a colony, the ship uses fusion power and you have access to the technology of an approx 150 years in the future civilization, if you make it and set everything up for the refugees to survive you may choose to return to the real world at the time you left it. (poll under keep reading)

one of my biggest issues with new trek is that it keeps trying to make every season of every new show have such a monumental scale that it circles right back around to being irrelevant. there's always a huge evil plot to destroy everything in the universe slash starfleet (and the assumption that starfleet and the federation IS everything ((and that everyone should want to join)) is a whole other debate) and our rag-tag crew of misfits has to save the poor defenseless federation against all odds etc etc..... like i get it, big stakes = big action = big emotion. but it's too big. it's lazy. when "everything" is on the line, characters don't have to justify why they're risking their lives because, duh, it's obvious, they're doing it because they have to etc etc. there's literally no believable alternative in the narrative.
whereas a smaller scale issue (i.e. voyager stuck in the DQ, dealing with the cardassian occupation of bajor, and so on; still big problems to solve! but they don't affect the entire fabric of society) has moral gray areas and also specific goals the main characters should achieve other than just "save everyone in the universe". the characters could and did question their own motives and actions because there wasn't one right answer! the shows were about thinking about what the right answer was!!! how am i supposed to believe that the real treasure was the friends we made along the way if i don't care about the ""way"" in the first place????

Been wanting an excuse to use that sci-fi panel material again.
So I did this.
I love seeing ship designs based on random objects, and I've had this mechanical eraser that I've always thought already looked a bit ship-like already, so I based the big carrier loosely on that.
I just really like how much those textures add to otherwise pretty simple models.

trying to figure out hsr's timeline is just pepesilvia.jpeg
when dates are labeled "AE" does that mean the WHOLE amber era, e.g. 2157 AE is the 2157th amber era, which itself lasted anywhere from 76 to 240 years?
was the swarm disaster in the 1300s AE ~770 whole ass amber eras ago (e.g. 60,000-180,000 years ago) from the present in 2157 AE, because that is an insane length of time?
the xianzhou fleet set sail in search of Yaoshi ~8000 years ago (whose years in what system???), and Yaoshi didn't exist during the swarm disaster, so is there just a huge gap between 60k-180k years ago & 8k years ago?
but the founding of the IPC is listed as occurring btw 1357-1387 AE, involving the same people who were presumably mortal, pre-Yaoshi, and didn't live for thousands of years, so that HAS to be measured as 30 years and not 30 amber eras?
but also the IPC claims one of those people contemporary to the swarm disaster is definitely still alive??? i mean sure they could mean it symbolically or sth, but man
man.
i understand the history fictionologists now. i too am about to start just making shit up
