Do the ends justify the means?

Battlestar Galactica is, for the most part, the exploration of humanity at its ugliest. The worlds end, billions of people are murdered, and it all goes downhill from there. The colonists, after the destruction of their homeworlds, are essentially like rabbits on the run. They scramble to preserve a society and infrastructure that no longer exists. But structure is function, and function is structure. If the structure no longer serves its function, can it exist? 

Can democracy exist—or rather, a democratic republic, exist—after an apocalypse? Can a society that is forced to rely on a solitary military and political power be truly democratic? If the infrastructure that supported democracy is gone, then what? What does this mean? Is it truly a democracy vs non-democracy, good vs evil dichotomy? What are the implications of tossing away democracy as “good” and making sacrifices of liberty for actual, bare-bones survival? 

Or this is something that reflects upon the people in charge, and their choices? Is the breakdown of democracy inevitable, or is it the selectorate or make it possible? Does the electorate have a say in this? Is it better to do what is ‘smart’ or is it better to do what is ‘right’? And who gets to decide what is smart and what is right and which to choose and why these two things cannot coincide? 

After all, it wasn’t the 50,000 best of humanity who survived (Gaius Baltar, ladies and gentlemen.) It was 50,000 of the best and the worst and every shade of grey in between.

2025 Event Announcement

All of this has happened before...and all of this will happen again

We've had a lot of fun here the last two years, and so we are back for round three of the Galactica Big Bang and Mini Bang event!

The event is a chance for writers and artists to get together and produce fanworks set in the BSG universe, with two tiers–hence Big Bang and Mini Bang.

The minimum wordcount for Big Bang is 10k, and the minimum for Mini Bang is 2.5k.

For art, we accept a wide variety of media! Digital or traditional fanart; fanvids; filks; podfic; fanmixes; crafts (fiberarts, ceramics, etc.)–if you have any questions about a particular medium, just ask! Specific requirements for artists vary based on medium, but are included in the Rules post as a general idea/guideline.

May 1, 2025 - Signups Open

July 11, 2025 - Author signups close; story details due.

July 14, 2025 - Story details sent out for claims; artist and beta signups close

October 11, 2025 - Posting day! Big Bang entries of less than 20k words must be posted in full, as must all Mini Bang entries; Big Bang entries of more than 20k must post at least the first 10k. Big Bang entries should be fully posted by October 31, 2025.

Watching Battlestar Galactica with my live-in partner; her for the first time and me doing my first rewatch since I was a teenager. (I actually watched it on the Sci-Fi channel, on a tube TV.) And I have so many thoughts -

It's shocking to me just how well it holds up despite being old enough to drink. It looks and sounds as good as a lot of the 'prestige' tv it helped inspire alongside the Sopranos and the Wire.

Gaius Baltar is way, way more of a comedy character than I remember. Which is impressive given he is an architect of the near total genocide humanity has undergone. If Tumblr was a thing back then he would have been a tumblr sexyman, mark my words, he's just so wet and pathetic. The most wet and pathetic to ever do it.

It is so fucking cool when the camera in the space scenes takes a hit, just the fucking coolest. It's such a great way to add a little verisimilitude to the CGI scenes of space combat.

The set design, soundscapes, and costuming are all so incredible. I seriously kinda want a colonial military uniform because of how swanky it looks. It looks like a real ass military uniform. And gods does the Galactica make so much noise, so much beautiful noise. Not to mention the CIC just looks so good. I can just imagine how it smells.

Ellen Tigh is fucking hilarious. I love her and cherish her in a way teenage me never could. World's most awful MILF.

finished rewatching battlestar galactica and god dude it's such a fucking banger i didn't appreciate it enough the first time around it's a slow burn but at the same time always has something interesting going on and there's shit that gets set up in season 1 that doesn't pay off until the final episode the plot is so tight all the characters have so much going on oh my goddddddd what a fucking mastahpeece S tier TV please fucking go watch it if you haven't no you don't need to watch the old one first
