"Why are we only going to do one move a day?"
"You already asked that, Judy."
"I'm asking again. It feels silly to do it that way."
"It gives us something else to think about. We're concentrating on another thing. It grounds us."
"So what if I stop thinking about it and I forget where everything is?"
"Then we have to start over."
"But we might not have time to start over."
"Then we'll write it down. But we can only do one move a day. That's what we agreed on."
"I just didn't want to argue with you."
"You're arguing with me now."
"I'm not trying to."
"I know. So let's not. We're going to stay positive. We're going to hope for the best. And we're going to live our lives as best as we can regardless."
The Titania was a marvel, even in its limitations. Despite training for weightlessness, Ruth still subconsciously searched for the constraint of gravity. To float through the chambers of what was meant to be her home for two months still felt like she was exploring a house that belonged to someone else; a space meant for someone's comfort, but not hers.
Judith, having endured silence about as long as she could, spoke again. "Do you think it'll have reached Attlee by now?"
"Your Prime Minister, you mean?"
"Who else? He's the honorary leader of the Programme, I'm sure he'd want to hear about what's happened."
"Would it help us if he did?"
"They wouldn't be able to get another rocket up here that quicky, as much as I'm sure they'd want to."
"Are you saying they wouldn't?"
"I'm-," and Ruth pauses, remembering that words carry weight, "I'm saying that we signed papers. We had to be prepared for something like this."
"You don't really think you can just prepare for something like this, do you? It's quite one thing to be asked to imagine such a situation, and another to live through it."
"I'm not disagreeing, I'm just trying to think logically."
"I don't want logic. I want reassurance."
Ruth maneuvers herself, cutting her arms through the air to reach her crewmate. She draws her in, cradling her head against her collarbone. Embraces are often still, the tidal movement of breathing the only motion. But in the void, they continue to rotate, slowly, as though sinking into an abyss they have been warned of since they could comprehend language.
Ruth strokes her fingers through Judith's hair, slow and deliberate, as she remembers her mother would do for her. The age difference is nothing so drastic as to facilitate obligation, it is merely their unspoken agreement, a covenant sealed through subtlety.
Ruth says, barely audible over the constant hum of the machinery working to keep them both alive, "I won't let anything happen to you if I can help it."
