Pennsylvania Headcanons
PA’s State Spirit forms cracks and chips all over his body, like that of stone. Small chipped pieces float around him. The revealed inside caused by the chips is shrouded by a bright purple light. The biggest rupture is on his back, with a large crater that has light bursting out of it.
The gaps in his body don’t really exist, it’s just how the Spirit looks. Touching the cracks and gaps will feel like normal skin, but those spots feel more sensitive to PA.
The stone cracks are a reference to the Keystone State nickname. A keystone is the middle stone at the top of an arch that holds all the other stones in place and lets the structure bear weight. It’s the most important part, without it the arch falls.
Pennsylvania was a very important state as the site of the former capital, where the Declaration and Constitution were signed, and being economically important in manufacturing and agriculture.
He’s cracked and chipped now because he’s kind of past his glory days of being the heart and center of the country. He doesn’t have the capital anymore and he gets outclassed in many industries that used to be his best.
The significant crater being where it is is a little nod to how PA feels that he should have some serious back problems after carrying the country for decades.
While sort of a random choice for Spirit color, purple used to be a color only obtainable by royalty due to how difficult it was to get the pigment. Nowadays, anyone can have vivid purple stuff for cheap. It makes his exposed interior look like amethyst, which is findable in Pennsylvania. Also I needed some more purple-colored Spirits for this country. Blue and gold for so many of these official colors…
PA likes making handcrafted wooden pieces as a hobby. He often forgets that the Statehouse has power tools, which makes his finished works all the more impressive.
His large Amish population makes him forget about having power tools as an option.
Many of the states have their own cast iron skillets that they’ve seasoned over decades (the South all have theirs monogrammed.) Even Florida knows not to mess with them, but that doesn’t stop other, well-meaning states from causing some close calls.
The oldest cast iron skillet in the house belongs to PA, a 140-year old ERIE logo Griswold lovingly named Firefly. This is probably the closest thing he has to a child.
Washington nearly put her in a dishwasher once. Firefly was unharmed, but it took four states holding PA back to give them enough time to escape before he beat Wash to a pulp for almost killing his baby.
I’ve considered giving PA pants that flare out at the bottom, kind of like disco pants from the 70’s.
Disco as a genre and subculture saw its origins in Philadelphia and New York City.
The moment he senses a spotted lanternfly nearby, PA will not be stopped by anything until he annihilates it with the wrath of a thousand northeasterners. Then he goes back to whatever he was doing like nothing happened.
Spotted lanternflies are not fireflies. The latter is endangered and is good pest control. Spotted lanternflies are an invasive species and are harmful to many native flora that are important to the state’s economy.
As one of the strongest states in the country, he often causes slight property damage whenever he does so.
Sometimes PA and other afflicted colleagues (mainly New Jersey) will go together to different states and compete to see who can get rid of more in an allotted time. Truthfully, the contest doesn’t really matter and they don’t keep close counts. It's just as many as they can find.
PA is part of the Groundhog Day “inner circle,” the ones that plan the event and care for Phil. As the humans do, he will claim that Punxsutawney Phil is immortal just like himself and that he’s been the same groundhog for 136 years, no matter how much the other states try to disprove him.
Punxsutawney, the borough’s personification, is also part of the inner circle. Unlike PA, Punxsy can understand “Groundhogese,” the only person able to do so besides the president of the inner circle.
Marines (the personification) often does under-the-table deals with PA, exchanging chocolate for crayons. While PA doesn’t necessarily need chocolate from Marines, it is an excuse to eat more chocolate.
Hershey, Pennsylvania is the Chocolate Capital of the US. It has the Hershey Company headquarters and their chocolate factory.
Lehigh, Pennsylvania has the Crayola headquarters.

Ignoring his descent into madness.
November 30, 2023
When he first burst upon the political scene, the mainstream media often remarked on the fragile mental state of the Republican Party's anointed one. Back in 2016, Vanity Fair asked, "Could Donald Trump pass a sanity test?" Even in 2017, Rolling Stone ran an article titled "Why Trump is mentally unfit to be president." But by 2020, The New Yorker was complaining, "The President is acting crazy, so why are we shrugging it off?"
Perhaps, as political scientist Brian Klaas observes, the press became so accustomed to the "banality of crazy" that "few voters recognize just how deranged, delusional, and dangerous Donald Trump is." Here's The Alabama Reporter with some recent examples of that craziness.
Within the past two months, the former president of the United States has suggested the execution of a U.S. military leader, poked fun at the savage beating of the spouse of a political rival, claimed that immigrants are “poisoning the blood” of the country and suggested that police shoot to kill shoplifters.
In September, Trump made the bizarre suggestion on his failing Truth Social site that, since New Jersey senator Bob Menendez has been indicted for corruption, "Senate Democrats should all resign." Then, followed up with a weird rant about President Biden.
Can you imagine how much Crooked Joe Biden has stolen, and what’s in some of his many homes? Hunter lived with Crooked Joe in Delaware. It would be a “Treasure Hunt!” Crooked’s coffers must be loaded up with cash.
Still nurturing his irrational obsession with wind power, Trump asserted at a September rally in Summerville, South Carolina:
Windmills are causing whales to die in numbers never seen before. No one does anything about that. They are washing up ashore. You wouldn’t see that once a year — now they are coming up on a weekly basis. The windmills are driving them crazy. They are driving the whales, I think, a little batty.
And speaking of batty, on the day before Thanksgiving, Trump made 49 social media posts in one hour (!) in which he attacked political opponents Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, Judge Arthur Engoron, New York AG Letitia James, federal prosecutor Jack Smith, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds, Atlanta DA Fani Willis and, of course, the media. Oh, he also warned in all caps of "massive caravans through Mexico headed our way!!!"
Faced with the prospect of criminal conviction and incarceration, Trump is showing unmistakable signs that he's losing his grasp on whatever fragments of sanity remain. It would be nice if the news media noticed.

Reward
pairing : soccer player! boyfriend! Yuta Nakamoto x Reader
genre : smut, fluff (if you squint)
warning : toys, slight exhibitionism, fingering, shower sex, oral sex (male receiving), penetrative sex
word count : 1.8k words.
summary : You wanted to give him his reward for winning the game.
for @neosmutcollective‘s Wet and Wild
gif not mine, just a reference for Yuta’s look. went all in with the smut, sorry 😅
The audiences’ cheers rambled all through the stadium as the announcement of the soccer champion is made. It was well-deserved, you thought. Everyone in that team played really well. Especially your boyfriend, Nakamoto Yuta.
If not for your soccer superstar, you’ll be at home now. Missing him. Horny.
It’s probably because you’re ovulating. You’re craving for him. Wanting his heat.
It doesn’t help that he looks like a snack in his soccer uniform, with that long black hair that you love to thread your fingers to, and that red lips that looked delectable.
You want him. You need him.
Everyone was standing as they welcome the victors of the game but you’re still seated, hidden behind people. Your knuckles were turning white as you tightly grasp on the edge of your seat at the orgasm building inside you. You’re dripping wet and the small bullet vibrator kept on buzzing inside you, eager to get you off. You bit your lip as you try to suppress a moan, head lolling back and eyes closed as the pleasure hit you. You crossed your legs, coughing lightly to avoid a chuckle to escape your lips. How experimental of you to have an orgasm in a public place. In the middle of strangers who might see you.
You gulped when your eyes met his. He saw you. He was watching you. He knew.
Yuta cocked his head to the side, motioning for the old locker room located on the left side of the soccer field. He slipped past his teammates who were still basking in their win and you followed him.
He was seated on the bench, staring at you. His legs were spread in a cocky way as you approached him nervously. The doors were just closed; you cannot lock them. And someone can come in and see the two of you. Yet, the thought turned you on. Do you have an exhibitionist kink that you haven’t explored yet?
“Sit.” It was a threat, you knew. And you wanted him so bad to argue with him.
You were supposed to sit down beside him but he gestured for his lap. Your underwear is soaked that you gave a quiet moan when he jerked his thigh. The vibrator slightly poking your inside. “Are you having fun with your little friend?” He asked while bouncing you in his lap.
Your hands held tight on his shoulder, bending your body forward as you desperately cling to him. “I need you, Yuta. Please.” You heard him chuckle. His hand went inside your skirt then inside your underwear just to take off the vibrator. His index finger slipped inside you, drawing circles that caused you to whimper. “Please.”
He removed his finger in you then slipped it between your lips, tasting yourself. “Are you sure?” He asked while raising an eyebrow at you. “You’re taking your little friend so well.”
“I want your cum inside me, Yuta.”
He grinned. That evil grin that you knew he’s planning something. “I want to shower first. Do you want to join me?”
“I don’t have extra clothes…”
“That’s why we’re getting in there naked.” He removed your blouse then your skirt, putting it inside his locker. Your bra and soaked underwear joining the pieces of cloth inside. He kissed your neck then groped your breast when he kissed you on the mouth.
You heard a shuffle of feet and voices outside that startled you. Shit, his teammates are coming and you’re naked. “Last cubicle, right. Wait for me.” He ordered, slapping your naked butt as you turn around to run to the cubicle he mentioned.
“Oh, I thought you left already.” It was Johnny’s, the team’s goalkeeper, voice.
“Yeah, I want to shower first.” You heard Yuta say. Footsteps can be heard coming your way and the door opened followed by his menacing grin. “I thought you’re using the new locker room today.” You heard a click and he was pushing you to the wall, his tongue automatically slithering inside your mouth. One hand groped your breast as the other turned the shower open.
He’s so rough. When his hand cupped your naked wetness, a quiet moan escaped your mouth. He immediately kissed you, devouring the screams of pleasure you made because of his hands inside you. “So noisy,” he whispered against your ear. “We have to do something with your mouth, baby.”
You immediately knew what it was and didn’t need further instructions as you get on your knees in front of him. His hair was already wet, falling on his face that made you gasp. He’s so hot. The water from the shower cascaded down his lean body and you stared at the perfection in front of you. Your hand reached for his balls then darted your tongue to lick his tip.
“Yuta.” You heard another voice, Taeyong’s. “I saw your girlfriend earlier.” Your boyfriend just looked at you as you started taking his length in your mouth. Both his arms were on the bathroom wall, back leaned forward that the water hit his back. Your tongue kept playing with his cock, teeth lightly grazing on the side. “She always supports you in your games.”
His tip hit the back of your throat, moaning lightly. “Yeah, she’s the best.” You heard him say as he held the back of your head, grasping your hair. He started thrusting his cock in your mouth as your nails claw on his thigh.
“She’s really pretty.” You heard Johnny said and if possible, you felt Yuta twitch inside you. Is he turned on by this? “Even Doyoung has a crush on her.” This is news to you. They always seem so cold towards you that you thought his teammates hated you but maybe, they’re just awkward with a girl. Your boyfriend’s thrust never faltered, even quickening in pace that if not for the hold on your head, you might bump your head on the wall.
One of the showers stopped then you heard a door opened. “She looks like an angel,” Taeyong claimed that almost made you laugh. An angel? Will they still call you that if they saw you now, on your knees and your mouth agape as Yuta use you like his personal glory hole.
He removed his cock on you, the tip already red. His hands jerking his length as white spurts of cum shot on your face and your breasts. “Yeah, she looks good in white.” You lightly hit his thigh as he chuckled at what he did.
Yuta removed the showerhead while helping you stand up, washing off the cum in your hair then your breasts, groping and rubbing them. You were biting your bottom lip the whole time, preventing a moan to escape since you knew Johnny and Taeyong are still inside the room. Your boyfriend turned you around, his cock hardening once again between your legs. You can feel the water pressure of the showerhead on your body as he moved it south. His free hand covered your mouth when you created a small sound at the moment he placed the showerhead between your legs, water hitting your core.
“Be quiet,” he whispered, slipping two fingers inside your mouth which you gladly lapped up. You were squirming at the pleasure, one hand on the wall while the other desperately held to his arm. You wanted to shout at how good he’s making you, wanted his friends to know that you’re not an angel but a bitch in heat for Yuta. His slut. You wanted him, you needed him. Your breathing was heavy. Your head spinning with lust. You managed to remove his fingers in your mouth then whispered the word “Fuck me, please”
He smirked before bending your body forward that you held to the wall. The showerhead still between your legs, but now hitting your clit as he entered you from behind. You were thankful that you were holding the wall as he thrust inside you in powerful strides or you might hit your head or slip down. But you’re desperate for something to claw on, for something to dig your nails into with the immense pleasure surging through your body.
You were about to shout when Johnny’s voice can be heard. “Dude, aren’t you done?” They’re still here so you bit your lip, hard. He kept his pace, eager to get you an orgasm. “We’ll get going first.”
“Yeah. sure.” Yuta answered calmly. One hand groped your breast too hard that you created a soft sound. You tasted iron in your tongue and your lips starting to hurt. Why can’t they leave already?
A knock on your cubicle door can be heard. “Yuta, are you alright?” Taeyong asked.
You thought Yuta would stop but he didn’t. Instead, he quickened his thrusts. He’s actually turned on by this? Maybe it is him who has an exhibition kink. And the idea made you so horny that you started clenching on him. “Yeah,” he answered, coughing lightly to avoid the strain in his voice. “I’m good.”
He is. You thought. He’s really good.
“We’re going to the restaurant downtown. Are you coming?”
He hugged you from the back, his hips jerking at you. The shower head was now on the floor as one of his hands fiddled with your nipples, the other rubbing your clit. The pleasure is too much that you started grinding on him, eager to have your orgasm. You felt the familiar coil in your stomach, his cock twitching at your clenching core. “I’m…” He started, voice shaking. You felt something warm inside you as you felt your release. “Coming.”
You heard footsteps then it disappeared. Your boyfriend pulled out of you then held you in his arms, kissing you in the mouth. You were breathless, wet, and sticky. “We should do this again.” he whispered then licked the blood on your lip. You nodded. This is one hell of a sexual adventure.
He cleaned you up, even letting you wear his clean jersey shirt that has his surname marked on the back. “Nakamoto looks good on you.” You lightly hit his arm as you exit the locker room, surprised that Taeyong and Johnny were outside. “Why are you two still here?”
The two guys shrugged then walked away, “I wonder why Y/N’s lip was bleeding.” Taeyong claimed.
“Maybe they’re into marking now,” Johnny explained. “Even his surname is now marked on her.”
“I don’t think I can enter that cubicle after today.”
The taller guy laughed. “You’re lucky, we didn’t use the new locker rooms today. The cubicles are wide open.”
You gasped then held on to Yuta’s arm. Funny, you thought, why did you feel tingly all of a sudden? You lightly glanced at him and he smirked at you. Is he thinking what you’re thinking? Your boyfriend held your waist, pulling you closer. “Next game. Should we let Taeyong or Johnny watch?” You stared at him, “Or maybe Doyoung?” Is he serious?
You gave him an innocent smile. This is your reward for him. Why does it feel like a reward for you? “Do well next game.” And you knew, he will.

Find it on AO3 here.
It’s not often that Arya gets to go to a hockey game anymore. Between classes for her Master’s degree, work, and the ticket prices it never seems to work out in her favor. But when Ned wins a pair of tickets to tonight’s Storm’s End Lightning game and offers to take her with him she jumps at the chance. Ned knew how much she loved hockey and she was ecstatic when he thought of her first to take with him.
“Want a beer?” he asks as they find their seats. She takes a moment to survey her surroundings, they weren’t the best seats in the house, but they were free.
“Sure, but just the one, and some popcorn too if it’s not too much trouble!” He smiles at her and takes off to get drinks and snacks for them before the game starts.
While waiting for the lights to dim and the music to start she looks around at the people that are slowly filling in around them. The sight of children bundled up like small marshmallows against the chill of the arena, their parents arms loaded with popcorn and sodas makes her smile at the memories of going to games with her father and brothers at the Winterfell Ice Arena growing up. A couple of guys in jerseys fill in behind them, loudly talking about the upcoming wedding of one of them, a father is explaining the basics of the game to a little girl with blonde pigtails in the row ahead, and two seats down from her sits a man in a nice business suit. Her eyes linger on him for just a moment and she wonders if they’ve met before, and why he’s wearing a suit to a hockey game. There’s something that is vaguely familiar about his messy black hair and icy blue eyes. He’s quite attractive and when she catches his eye they exchange a small smile before she quickly looks away with a slight blush.
Ned returns just as the lights dim, handing her a beer and a small bag of popcorn, a tray of nachos in his other hand. They stand and clap as the music begins and the players make their way onto the ice.
“Thanks for bringing me,” she says as they sit back down.
“Well, I know how much you love it. The pictures at your desk speak for themselves! It must be your Northern blood, I don’t know how you aren’t freezing,” Ned is bundled in a scarf, and hat with gloves poking out of the front pocket of his heavy sweatshirt.
Arya internally rolls her eyes but smiles at him, Dornishmen . The arena isn’t that cold. “I do love a good game.”
Ned grins back before saying, “I’m not very familiar with all of this like you. We don’t play ice sports in the south. You’re going to have to help me out here.”
“Ned, we are in the south. And Sunspear has an ice hockey team.”
“Everything’s south to you, Stark. Plus we only got a hockey team five years ago. Point still stands, the game?”
“What do you want to know? Ask and I’ll answer.” A small huff of laughter to her right causes her to look over quickly. The man in the suit is looking at her directly, a grin on twitching at the corners of his full lips. She furrows her brows for a moment at him before turning her focus back to Ned and the ice, a brief grumble in her mind that he was laughing at her. “Girls know sports too, stupid,” she thinks before putting him out of her mind.
The first period is uneventful, not even a fight on the ice to liven things up. The score stands at zero-zero. Of course, the one game she can attend would be boring. During the intermission they make their way to the concession stand, Ned grabbing another beer and Arya getting water and some Twizzlers, her favorite hockey game snack from when she was a child. One their way back to their seat she notices the dark haired man in the suit is no longer alone, another man in an equally nice suit has joined him. He’s tall and thin with curly red hair and also looks familiar, but she can’t quite place either one of them.
Not even three minutes have passed in the second period when one of the Lannisport Lions slams a Lightning player into the boards. The crowd boos as the player lays on the ice for a moment to catch his breath before shakily getting back to his skates, the boos get even louder when the referees don’t call a penalty.
“Oh come on!” Arya shouts as she stands, throwing her arms in the air, “that’s boarding!”
“What’s boarding?” Ned asks.
“It’s when a player pushes another into the glass unnecessarily rough. It’s a five minute penalty for the Lions but these refs just screwed us out of that opportunity for a power play.”
A deep voice from her right comments, “It would’ve only been a minor.”
She turns to see both men looking at her, a pair of blue eyes twinkling from under the fall of dark hair.
“A minor?” she challenges, “he was almost unconscious!”
“Yeah, but he’s not bleeding,” Blue Eyes grins at her. She stares him for a moment before glancing back at his red haired friend to see him grinning as well. She gives them a curt nod before turning her focus back to the game.
“What’s his problem?” Ned murmurs. Arya just shakes her head.
By the end of the second period the Lightning are down by two.
“Sorry,” Ned says as they watch the Zamboni chug around the rink. The little pigtailed girl in front of them is asleep against her father’s arm.
“What for?” Arya asks.
“For the game being a crappy one,” he smiles at her, and she smiles back.
“You can’t tell the future Ned, so don’t apologize. I’m very happy to be here. I haven’t been able to go to a hockey game in a few years.” Arya hasn’t been able to make it home to Winterfell since she started her Master’s program and the Winterfell Wolves haven’t played the Storm’s End Lightning in Storm’s End at a time when she wasn’t drowning in exams, papers, and work. Not even the chance to see Robb on the ice could manage to pull her away from the pressing demands and deadlines of her job and school work as much as she would have loved to go.
The third period starts and five minutes in the Lions score another goal. That’s when the Lightning forget about playing to win and start playing for revenge. The first instance comes in a small skirmish that results in minor, two minute, penalties for both teams. As soon as those are over another skirmish breaks out, this time turning into an all out brawl.
“Kick his ass!” Arya yells, standing and cheering as helmets and gloves go flying and sticks are dropped to the ice. Ned looks taken aback by the sudden outburst of violence from her.
“You like the fights?” he asks.
“Like? Are you kidding, they’re the best part!” She shouts again as the Lightning player finally gets the upper-hand and sends the Lion skidding across the ice.
“It’s a shame Waters isn’t playing tonight.” Arya turns to her right to see the redheaded man grinning up at her. The dark haired man beside him is giving him an inscrutable look.
She sighs internally and takes the bait, “And why is that?”
“He would have had Marbrand knocked out in half the time. Lemoncloak isn’t nearly as good at fighting as Waters is.”
Arya scoffs, “Lemoncloak might not be as good at fighting, but at least he’s not an absolute asshole like Waters is. Have you ever seen how he fights? I mean, I’m all for getting down and dirty on the ice but there’s a line and he crosses it every time. It’s like he gets off on it,” she says, making an obscene jerking motion with her hand. “There’s a reason the fans chant “Ice Cold” when he takes the ice.”
The two men share a look and a smile. “What? You disagree?” Arya asks.
“Well, I disagree,” the dark haired man replies, “but it’s nice to know what other people think.”
Arya raises an eyebrow at him before turning her attention back to Lemoncloak and Marbrand being ejected from the game. When it’s all over Storm’s End has lost 4-1. Arya sighs as she and Ned pick up their trash to toss on their way out. She notices an odd look on Ned’s face and turns to see the dark haired man standing right behind her, towering over her.
“Is it a habit of yours to hover behind people?” she asks, looking up and up his firm chest to meet his icy blue eyes. She hadn’t quite realized how tall he was folded into the stadium chair near her.
“Just the ones I find interesting,” Arya narrows her eyes at him as he sticks out his hand, “I thought we should meet properly. Gendry Waters, left defenseman, ‘the guy who gets off on fighting’.”
Arya blushes furiously, swallowing hard and fumbling for a second as she puts her small hand into his massive one, “Arya,” she grits out, “and I’m sorry about that. If I had known…”
“You would have kept it to yourself? Where’s the fun in that?” He grins at her, perfect white teeth glinting in the arena lights. He must be fucking with her, she thinks.
“Okaaaay… This is sufficiently awkward. I’m going to go,” she pulls her hand free to gesture over her shoulder to where Ned is probably standing staring at the two of them. She had temporarily forgotten there were people around. Her hand feels cold for a moment without his warm palm around hers.
“Wait,” Gendry says, “this asshole is Anguy Archer, right wing.”
“Hi,” she says, waving awkwardly. The redhead flashes her a bright smile and a wave.
“We’re gonna go out with the guys and get a beer. Would you like to join us?” Gendry asks.
Her heart races for a moment. She’s intrigued by this man in front of her, but she came here with Ned, it would be insanely rude to ditch him.
“Your boyfriend can come too,” Anguy pipes up from behind Gendry’s massive shoulders.
“Oh, he’s, he’s not my boyfriend, we’re coworkers,” she says entirely too fast. The smile that breaks out across Gendry’s face makes her blush again.
He leans down so only she can hear him, the smoky leather smell of his cologne washing over her and making her dizzy, “That’s good to hear.” As his breath whispers across her ear a wave of goosebumps erupts across her arms. She looks up at him through her eyelashes, feeling very shy all of a sudden. He smiles at her one more time before turning to walk away. She fights down the urge to call out to him and turns back to Ned.
Over her shoulder she hears Gendry one more time, “If you change your mind we’ll be at Seaworth’s on the waterfront.” She glances back to see him give her a half smile that makes her insides squirm before he turns and walks away. She keeps her eyes on him as he goes, taking in the stretch of his suit jacket over his shoulders, his firm athlete’s ass, and the long stretch of his well muscled legs that his suit pants only highlight.
Ned awkwardly clears his throat.
“Sorry,” she says, “That was weird, right? I just… uh…”
“Yeah,” Ned drags the word out, “he seemed a little… friendly.”
“Uh, sure. Very friendly.”
“Did you want to go? We can if you want to?”
Arya thinks about it for the moment, Gendry’s dizzying blue eyes and enticing smell drift across her mind. The thought of sitting in a dark pub booth with him, his large, warm hand on her knee under the table. She reigns it in before the thought gets too far.
“No, no. Let’s just go. I have some edits to make on a paper when I get home anyway.”
She saves for a single ticket. It takes her over a month to set enough aside. She’s not sitting in the cheap seats this time, she wants to be rinkside where he could see her, to see if there was something there. If he recognized her she would take it as a sign She spent almost half an hour staring at the seat map when she went to buy her ticket before deciding that directly across from the player’s bench was where she needed to be. She prays that he’ll be playing against Oldtown tonight, since he’s fresh off a three game suspension. She puts on some light makeup, throws on her Lightning sweatshirt, and makes her way to the stadium.
The lights dim, the music starts, and she holds her breath as the players make their way onto the ice. She smiles when she sees him suited up in the dark blue Lightning jersey, his eyes piercing even from across the ice. This is going to be a good night. When the announcers call out the opening line-up she chants, “Ice cold! Ice cold!” with the rest of the crowd when his name is called for Left Defenseman.
She doesn’t pay much attention to the game, just to the dark haired man with the blue eyes. She finds herself watching his every move, calculating hits like he does, cheering when he does his job clearing the puck from near the Lightning goal and using his massive frame to keep the Oldtown center at bay.
Two periods pass with the Lightning up 2-1. He’s not even so much as looked up into the stands in that time. Maybe this was a bad idea, she thinks, and she should have gotten a ticket closer to the bench. She could have tried to yell over the glass at him then. But it would have taken her weeks longer to save enough to sit there, and to finagle time in her busy schedule to come.
He makes his way onto the ice again, and she watches as he does what he does best, blocking the other team’s offense from scoring a goal. What no one expected was for the play to shift quickly to the other end of the ice. The puck finds its way in front of his stick and with a practiced flick of his wrist it bounces off an Oldtown defensemen’s skate and into the goal, earning a point for Storm’s End.
She jumps from her seat, screaming with the rest of the crowd as he looks on in shock. It’s not his job to score and she can see the surprise written across his face. His teammates skate to him to congratulate him, and for the first time all night he looks up into the crowd, right into her grey eyes. Their eyes lock and her breath catches in her throat as the noise of the arena fades away. He smiles that half smile around his mouthguard as gloves smack his helmet and back but he doesn’t seem to notice. He makes his way back to the bench, not taking his eyes off her for the rest of the game. She can barely look away to the rest of the game either.
At the end of the game he skates onto the ice, over to the edge where she is waiting to make her own way to the boards. A few kids pound on the glass at him and he responds by slapping into the boards at them. They holler and laugh and she can tell it’s made their night. When the crowds finally thin she makes her way to him and gives him a big smile, he grins back, his mouthguard hanging free and giving her the full effect.
“Seaworth’s?” he yells through the glass to her, and she nods. “Thirty minutes,” he shouts again, taking off his glove and holding up three fingers. She nods again, smiling, and watches him skate off the ice.
Her heart pounds nervously as she stands outside the pub. She’d never been here before but had looked it up after he’d mentioned it at the last game. The owner of the pub had a long history with the Storm’s End hockey team and it wasn’t unusual to find several large, sweaty hockey players there after their games according to the internet. She only wanted to find one large, sweaty hockey player and it looked like she was in luck.
She notices Anguy first, and he gives her a knowing smile as he walks to the door, “Couldn’t resist some Ice Cold Waters?” he says, winking as he pulls the door to the pub open. She resists the urge to check him into the doorframe as he passes her.
“Hey.” She turns to see Gendry, standing behind her, a wide grin on his face as his dark, damp hair curls around his ears, his blue eyes shining in the dim street light.
“Hi,” she says quietly. He stares at her for a long moment before gesturing towards the door. They find the rest of the team crammed into several booths near the back celebrating their win, pitchers of beer and plates of food scattered between the tables. They squeeze in along an empty bench, thighs brushing beneath the table.
He leans in close to her, breath tickling her ear as he quietly says, “I have to ask. How come you didn’t recognize me?”
She turns to look at him, her nose nearly brushing his cheek with how close his face is to hers, “What do you mean?”
“At the first game. You clearly know your shit when it comes to hockey, so I was curious.”
She looks up into his eyes and he smiles at her. The smell of his cologne tickles her nose and she has to stop herself from climbing into his lap right there in front of his team.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but you look like a neanderthal out there on the ice. Sweaty, testosterone fueled, black mouthguard, black eyes, broken noses, eye grease. I barely recognize my brother when he’s geared up and in the moment. You were… definitely not that that night. I was expecting at least some missing teeth or something. Also you looked distractingly nice in a suit, which totally threw me off.”
“I looked nice?”
Arya blushes and nods, leaning in close to him, “Very nice. I couldn’t help but stare at your arse as you walked away.”
Gendry raises a dark brow at her and gives her a very slow once over of what he can see of her on the pub bench next to him, his eyes darkening as he looks her over, mentally supplemented by what he saw as he approached her outside the pub. She’d ditched her Lightning sweatshirt in her car and was wearing a dark top and skinny jeans, a hint of pale skin peeking out from below the hem of her cropped shirt.
“You look nice too,” is all he manages to say, his voice barely a step above a growl.
Arya raises a challenging eyebrow back at him, “Thank you.”
Their attention is called away from each other but the electricity continues to spark between them as their hand brush grabbing for beer and bar snacks. They talk hockey with the team, Arya revealing that she roots for Storm’s End because she lives here but will always be a Winterfell Wolves girl at heart. She can’t help it, the north is in her blood and her brother Robb plays center for the team.
Gendry leans down to murmur in her ear at that, “So what happens when they play here?”
She glances at him from the corner of her eye and drops her hand high on his leg below the table, “I cheer for the Wolves, but I might cheer a bit for you too now.”
“Just me?”
A sly smile creeps across Arya’s face, “Just for you,” she squeezes his leg before removing her hand and deliberately reaches across him to spoon a bite of dip onto a cracker, her shoulder and back brushing his chest as he rumbles quietly and splays a warm hand across her back, a few of his fingers brushing her bare skin as her top shifts with her movement. She settles back and feels a flash of triumph as Gendry doesn’t move his hand.
Anguy catches her eye at one point and winks at her, nodding his head towards Gendry who has barely taken his eyes off her all night. She’d caught a few of his other teammates glancing between the two of them and giving each other knowing smiles and subtle elbows as they leave the two of them in their bubble.
Eventually Arya sees the time as someone’s phone lights up on the table. It was past 11pm and she has work in the morning and a class in the evening. “It’s getting late,” she says with a sigh, “I have to get going. I’ve had a long day and I have an even longer one tomorrow.”
Gendry’s hand briefly strokes her spine before he slides out from the edge of the bench. He reaches a hand down to her, the sparks they’d been feeling all night lighting up as they touch. Gently, he pulls her off the bench and into his space before taking half a step back and staring down at her, not dropping her hand. She squeezes his hand before lacing their fingers together. Turning back to the table she says her good-bye to the team members she’s spent the last few hours with and leads Gendry from the pub.
The street is cool and quiet after the closeness of Seaworth’s. Slowly they walk hand in hand to her car, Arya trying to stretch their remaining time together by digging in her bag for her keys. She’s enjoyed her evening and Gendry’s company and despite her long day tomorrow she isn’t ready for the night to end.
Gendry breaks the quiet, “I’m really glad you were able to come and we got to do this,” he says softly.
Arya sighs, “Me too.”
“Could we… Would you want to see each other again? Without those louts around thinking they’re being subtle?” There’s a hint of doubt in his voice, like he maybe thinks she only came out to the pub to meet the team. It’s adorable that he could possibly think she’d come out for the rest of those idiots and not for the idiot standing in front of her shuffling his feet nervously.
“I’d like that a lot,” she says, with a smile.
“Even if I’m that guy who ‘gets off on it’?” his sharp smile flashes in the light of the street.
Arya groans and covers her face with her free hand, “I’m never going to live that one down, am I?”
“Not a chance,” he says, warmly. He steps closer to her, close enough for her to feel the heat radiating off him, chasing away the cool, damp air of the Stormland’s night.
She looks up at him, his face is serious as he stares down at her, his blue eyes almost black in the street light. She’s caught in his gaze before her eyes drift down to his lips for just a moment before darting back up. He licks his lips and she wants nothing more than to feel them against her own. Feeling bolder than she ever has she stands on her tip-toes and presses her mouth to his. His arms wrap around her instantly and she runs a hand up his jaw to bury it in the hair at the back of his neck, her other braced on his chest over his racing heart as they kiss like their lives depend on it. Like the other is air and water and all those other life-giving requirements.
She lets out a soft sigh as she pulls away slowly, his mouth chasing hers as she drops back to her feet. Gendry’s arms stay wrapped around her, holding her tight against him as they stare at each other, chests heaving.
“Shit,” he says through panting breaths, and she giggles, “I mean, yeah. That was, yeah.” He nods vaguely, looking shell-shocked. He smiles down at her, a faint blush across his cheeks visible even in the low light.
Arya nods, “I agree. Wow.”
“You sure you have to go?” He keeps smiling at her as she groans and drops her head to his chest.
“Yes. I have work and class tomorrow and I do need to get some sleep tonight. But,” she lets go of him with one hand to dig in her bag again. With a small, triumphant, “Ha!” she pulls her phone out and unlocks it, pulling up the dial screen and hands it to him. He loosens one arm from around her to enter his number in, pressing send and hanging up when he feels his own phone buzz in his pocket. Arya returns her phone to her bag and pulls out the keys that were clipped to the strap on top the whole time. She unlocks her car and moves to step out of his arms. Gendry pulls her in for one final, fiery kiss before letting go of her and opening her car door for her.
“Arya?” he says, just before she closes it.
“Yeah?” she looks back at him, he’s tucked his hands into his pockets, his hair is in disarray from her fingers, and his lips look a little swollen. He’s never going to hear the end of it when he gets back to his teammates.
“I’m really glad you came out tonight.” He smiles one final, brilliant time as she closes the door and starts her car. He stays there on the sidewalk as she pulls out into the street and begins to make her way home. When she gets there she pulls out her phone and opens the most recent call to an unknown number. Pulling up the text box she types, “I’m really glad I came out tonight too”.

Go for Gold
Bucky becomes seriously affected by an Olympic athlete during his time at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and makes a desperate attempt to get to know her better.
This is my entry for @allaboardthereadingrailroad ‘s #marveldiversitychallenge. My prompt was the song Swimming Pool Summer by Capital Cities.
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Black!Reader
Warnings: Blushy Bucky lol.
A/N: Whitney, thank you so much for providing this opportunity to write characters we are not so familiar with, allowing us to expand our horizons and crucially, working to make this space more inclusive for people of color. It was an amazing initiative to take and I’m so glad I participated (albeit a little late -- sorry)
This is also a wishful glimpse into the Olympics we never got this year.
Tokyo is a cornucopia of sensory overstimulation, and for the first time in a long time, Bucky is glad for it. It’s like the Stark Expo raised to the power of ten, the bright lights of the city and its signs mingling with the bright jerseys worn by fans. The streets are packed with sound and celebration, and his only guide grounding him is the heat he feels along his right side, where Sam walks beside him.
Pressed together, shoulder-to-shoulder, his brother in arms is today a brother in merriment and sports enthusiasm, as they make their way to the swim hall for the next event on their list. The women’s 50 meter freestyle. Bucky feels like he’s floating, cheeks aching while he listens to Sam talk about childhood dares that forced him to brave the cold waters of the cleanest part of the Hudson he and his cousins could find. All the while, the beat of a Xhosa chant from a crowd of South Africans syncs with his heartbeat and he inhales deeper as they pass a samosa cart.
Bucky doesn’t mention working at the docks and witnessing kids decades before Sam complete the same challenges; it’s too grandpa-ish an anecdote. Not that Sam would really notice, not right now, at least. Captain America has fallen silent, his focus on the swim hall, big, brown eyes bright in the cerulean light reflected from the water below.
He snaps out of it, out of that youthful glee at another item crossed off the bucket list, as they sit down. “Hey, how are you feeling?” Sam asks, once they’ve settled down, and they have time to breathe for themselves, and not to inhale all the amazement that surrounds them.
Bucky smiles. “Couldn’t be better,” and that’s all he has time for before the swimmers are walking out and the crowd is cheering behind him and he is fixated on one, particular Olympian. Your posture encaptivates Bucky, because you stands like you are ready to dive.
You enter the water like Bucky does his apartment, with a sigh of relief at being home. It is transfixing to see someone return to their element, and some egotistical part of him wonders if he looks anywhere near as ethereal as this swimmer. Only your head and shoulders are visible now, brown skin shimmering in the reflection of the water, and you tuck your swim cap tighter on your head the same way Bucky does his gloves before battle. Your face gleams with determination set in steel.
And then there is only quiet, and the gentle lapping of ripples against the pool walls, and everyone holds their breath. The starter pistol fires, and you’re off. Bucky’s eyes follow you and only you, your grace unparalleled by your lithe movements, like a knife through butter, and moments stretch into hours that are over all too soon.
But then Sam is screaming next to him. There’s something about a world record and the audience is on its feet behind him but he sees only you. You hoist yourself out of the pool, beaming brighter than the sun. A towel is placed around your shoulders and you laugh exuberantly when your coach whispers something in your ear as she hugs you. The sound imprints itself into his mind with the intensity of a magnesium flare, and with it, Bucky is a complete and total goner.
-----
He does not stop thinking about you. Can’t help it, even when he and Sam have attended two more events and he has had dinner and Sam has left for bed. Something tugs him to the water.
The sun has long set and the velvet blanket of night has drawn itself over the sky, tucked neatly into the corners of the horizon where he can see Tokyo spilling over the edge of his view. The city’s size is doubled by the calm reflection he can see from Hinode Pier, and he finds himself sitting on a jetty, above water pitch black save for a cluster of fireflies nearby.
There are steps behind him, and he tenses, more so when he sees the reflection in the water. It’s you, your posture and height unmistakable.
“Hi, mind if I join you?” You ask, and he stands to pretend he didn’t notice you earlier. The smile dancing like waves on your face tells him you’re not fooled, and he thinks the heat rising to his face surely won’t help, either.
“Of course.”
You sit down, and he follows, and the line holding your shoulders so tightly eases as your legs swing over the water. The fireflies look like fireworks -- magnesium flares -- in your eyes. An ease washes over you as you graze the bottom of your sneakers over the surface of the water.
“Congratulations,” Bucky says after a while, and you close your eyes and laugh, rub your eyelids with the heel of your palms.
“Thank you,” you say, removing your hands from your face, using them to gather your braids back and at your neck again, laughing again. “Sorry,” you say, shaking your head, and he wonders why. “I just can’t believe it. A world record.”
Your laughter is contagious and addictive, and Bucky tries to elicit more of it, toeing the line of your acquaintanceship delicately. “I was talking about the medals you won today, but yeah, congratulations with that, too.” It works. You smile, this time directly at him, and he can’t breathe with the full strength of your beauty directed right at him.
Tilting your head, you ask, “You watched me race? Were you rooting for me?” You joke back, but Bucky nods seriously as he considers your question.
“I wasn’t going to root for anyone because I don’t know the first thing about swimming, so it was as impressive as flying to me,” he begins, and thinks about how he really should be used to flying considering who his best friend is, “but I saw you in the 50 meter today and, well, I’ve always cheered for the winning team. Wasn’t going to change that now,” he says.
Your eyes flit between both of his, and the warmth emanating from you is enough to combat the chill of the night near the water. “What about not knowing anything about swimming? Are you willing to change that?” You ask and Bucky looks at the water below, and his face, intrepid, staring back in the dim light.
“Why not?” He says with a shrug, and you grin a starlight smile back at him, and then stand to pull a swim cap out of your hoodie before taking it off, leaving you in a sports t-shirt and yoga pants. The water splashes onto him as you dive off the jetty, and Bucky watches you giggle as you break the surface and come up for air, gesturing for him to join you.
The water is probably cold, but you’re in it, and he removes his windbreaker too, joining you more hesitantly. The waves welcome him, lapping over his t-shirt and he’s glad he’s wearing the synthetic skin today, so that you can be just two strangers, without the weight of your reputations tugging at you.
You cup your hands around your mouth as you paddle backwards and call, “Let’s just warm up,” and Bucky follows in a clumsy breaststroke, as you take off.
His breath is releasing in pants and the jetty is a thin line in the distance, his body warmer by the time you stop. There is no sand beach or wood pier here, only a small stretch of marshland. The cattails sway gently in a slow breeze behind you, and you look happier than you did in the pool, your eyes glimmering.
“You need to move your arms like this,” you say, and demonstrate steps that Bucky then mimics, but you shake your head and move closer. Your hands hold his arms gently, moulding his movements to look less like he is hacking at the water and more like he is pushing at it to propel himself forth.
Voice low, as if imparting secrets, you speak softly in his ear and are kind in your corrections. Once satisfied with his technique, you ask for him to swim beside you, and begin to move back towards the jetty you came from.
The air is calm, and then his stomach growls loudly, prompting another peal of laughter from you, as he laughs nervously. “Didn’t you have dinner?” You wonder.
“Guess the swimming worked up some more appetite.”
Treading water, your head and shoulders bob up and down, as do his, and a new affection blooms as each of your circular ripples meet. “You wanna go for a midnight snack?”
He thinks about what has brought the two of you there, a restlessness, a soulful ache for something unnameable. The night has ended in a way he did not expect, but he is better for it, and hopes you are, too. Something is blooming, with all the soft elegance of cherry blossoms and the deep understanding of hearts resonating with each other. Something he wants to see grow further and take root. He needs to know what your favorite food is, what it took for you to get to where you are, what you like to do in your free time.
Bucky wants to see more of you you, this version of you, the athlete away from the competition, the woman in her element, the teacher with a student, because he is drowning in all of you, so he could not be any happier to answer: “I’d love to,” and have you smile like the Pacific Ocean, wide and warm and welcoming, in response.

A Blind Meeting
Chapter 1
🦇🐞🦇🐞🦇🐞🦇🐞
It wasn’t long after I graduated from le lycée that I moved away from Paris, France to live in America. I received my scholarship to Gotham University in New Jersey for my Fashion degree. My parents had wanted me to just stay close to home in case any thing were to happen to me in my predicament. But with full assurance and Tikki’s help, I was able to go.
So after a summer of spending time with my parents, them helping me look for a place to live in Gotham, I started school. The apartment we choose was old and had a few break ins, but it had character. My dad was hesitant about this but Tikki and I had a good feeling. The building was just like home, an apartment over a shop. Tikki and Plagg zipped around the building as my parents and I talked to the realtor and signed the ownership documents. This is where my new life began.
Three years later, I finished my bachelor degree and running a successful bakery called “The Sleeping Bug-Mice” with an boutique in the back. My twenty-sixth birthday was in a couple weeks and I had a big plan coming. My former team were coming out to visit and I wanted their first time in Gotham to be the best. It was a quiet morning so I took the opportunity to sit at the counter and started designing out a plan. I was chewing on the eraser of my pencil when I heard the bell ring. Teeks, adopted redhead, barked lifting my attention to the door and smiled.
“Good morning, how may I assist you today?” I asked sweetly, closing the book, and slide it under the counter.
“Hello miss, can I get a large coffee?” His voice had a sweet tone to it, yet just a little rough.
“Of course, would you like sugar or anything in it?”
“No thank you.” I nodded and began preparing his coffee. I began to start humming, feeling Noir crawl around my feet briefly until the guest gasped I knew where Noir went to.
“Noir, no sir get off the counter.” I finished the coffee, placed the to go cup on the counter, and picked up Noir moving him back to the floor. “I’m sorry about him. Anything else I may get you?”
“No need to apologize and no thank you this is great. How much?” He sipped his drink before he fiddled in the pockets of his pants.
“It’s on the house. First time customers deal.” Smiling, I took the items I used and brought them to the back to wash. Teeks hadn’t moved from her spot when I left, watching the man. He moved to a table and pulled out a chair to sit on. I came back out to kneel down to pet Teeks getting her relax. Noir didn’t want to be good decided to mess with our customer. This went on until lunch rush when the man finally left and customers began to roll in.
The day went by quickly but once I closed the shop and closed the curtains Tikki and the other kwamis came out. They sat down on the counter nibbling on their treats.
“You know, he looked important.” Kaalki said with a dreamy tone.
“No I don’t know. Care to describe him for me.” I teased, resting my chin on my hands and listened. Kaalki gushed about how black hair slicked back as a business man, clear deep blue eyes, and was wearing a black and white suit to boot. “Honestly it looked uncomfortable. But who am I to judge on another’s person’s clothing.” She gave a giggle then munched on the super cube.
“Yeah, but did you see how he acted toward Noir. That mischief cat just stared at him.” Plagg said.
“You mean like you would have done before running off to sleep.” Trixx said receiving a laugh from plagg.
“He was definitely interested in you Mari. If only you could have seen how many times he looked toward you.” Pollen said finishing off her honey cup.
“Oh please your exaggerating. Who will help me tonight as we go running. Teeks?” I looked down toward my dog who barked at me followed by a meow from Noir. “Anyone else?”
“Me me me! I wanna partner up with Teeks!” Trixx shouted almost throwing her cookie in the air.
“Can I be partnered with Noir?” Plagg of all kwami asked.
“Well then. Nooroo can you merge with me and tikki?” I asked fixing my hair to drop over my shoulders.
“Of course guardian.” Nooroo has been more energetic since I saved him from Gabriel’s grasp but there are times I had caught him sitting alone with a sad expression.
“Perfect! Take your dishes to the sink and I’ll wash them in the morning. Meet you guys all upstairs.” Teeks walked with me upstairs staying beside my leg as Noir laid on her back. I unlocked my apartment, headed for my bedroom, and changed into my pajamas so I come home and go straight to bed when we were done. It’s been a few weeks since we last went running, but tonight was a good night to go. After everyone was inside the apartment, I locked the doors and windows, then went up the attic to the roof. Pollen, Tikki, and Wazz tended to the garden since we moved here, I have never seen a sad flower. So proud of my family.
“Ready guys? Tikki spots on. Nooroo, Tikki, unify.” We merged together and the power of emotion and creativity surged my body letting me see everything around me.
“Oooooo you look so cool!” Trixx said excitedly. She transformed with Teeks allowing the dog to use telepathy. Teeks was a red haired canine, now draped in orange and white vest and a orange mask that covered her ears. Plagg followed suit turning the once blonde cat into a black cat wearing a Bat like mask across his face.
“Ready to go Guardian.” Teeks said into my mind. With nod we stepped onto the edge of the building then fall forward catching our wings on the wind draft flying toward the next building. The night air was calming, quiet even. As we jumped from building to building around the Diamond district of Gotham landing ourselves onto a roof top across the border of Fashion District. A silent alarm went off at one of the jewelry stores on the south location of the district.
“Looks like it’s a common robbery Captain. Shall we help?” I asked Teeks running across the roof tops toward the robbed building.
“I think a mirage could do the trick.” Teeks barked loudly toward the door forcing a mirage of police officers surrounding the building. Noir slipped inside first. The men were screaming shooting their guns around erratically. “Oh great, we let him play with fools.” I laughed at Teeks words. We heard thumps from across of us. I stepped back into the shadows watching an outline of a man and a boy kneel down assessing the situation. Noir chased the robbers out, they held their hands over their head and knelt to the ground mumbling about a crazy bat throwing things at them. The man and boy jumped down, walking through Teeks mirage making the policemen vanish into smoke, and cuffed them up.
“Well this is new Batman, usually we just have to beat them to surrender.” The boy spoke first. He bad a teenager sound, no older than maybe a junior high lodge. I stepped closer to the edge listening to them talk.
“Maybe it’s just a lucky night. The commissioner is on his way. I’m going to head up to the roofs and see what else could be happening.” Batman I assume spoke, he had a more of a rough scratchy voice. Teeks and I stepped back once again hearing the grappling hook hit the roof ledge we were on. We stayed into the shadow watching as the brawny man climbed up over the ledger, dusting off his suit and for a second we locked eyes.
“Who’s there?” The rough voice asked, he took a step toward them until the boy down on the ground grunted doing what sounded like a tackle before the police arrived.
“Robin!” The man turned around and went down to assist the boy, letting me and my partners escape off the roof tops back toward my apartment.
“Too close. Tikki, Nooroo divide. Tikki spots off.” As the energy left my body, I stretched giving a tired yawn.
“Trixx, relax”
“Plagg, claws in” Teeks and Noir returned to their normal state followed with their own yawns. Tikki unlocked the balcony letting us all in. I turned around locking it back up then walked over to my bed, Teeks and Noir joining me. The Kwamis all went into the miracle egg that I redecorated to look more of a center piece in my room. Tikki and plagg laid on my second pillow and we all fell sleep almost instantly.

The Long Island Serial Killer (Long Island Ripper) or LISK:
The case of The Long Island serial killer is as grim as it is horrifying. This unidentified serial killer was believed to have killed 10 to 16 people over a period of nearly 20 years. With his victims mostly prostitutes, he left their bodies in areas on the South Shore of Long Island, New York. He has also been recognized by the grim nickname THE LONG ISLAND RIPPER.
• • •
Timeline of Events:
**Due to a variety of scattered human remains found at various crime sites, a condensed and categorized list of identified, unidentified, and possible victims, as well as their last known location, will be mentioned. Identified bodies will be featured alongside bullet points (•). Unidentified who have succumb to the hands of the killer will be listed alongside an asterisk (*). Possible victims who are identified/unidentified but might be similar with the identical motif of the LISK will be paired alongside a dash (-) and question mark (?).
• December 2010:
Of the ten bodies or sets of remains found since late 2010, the four discovered in December 2010 have been identified as missing prostitutes who all advertised their services on Craigslist. It has been theorized by a former investigator on the case that the killer shopped for look-a-like victims through Craigslist ads. Each had been strangled and her body wrapped in a burlap sack before being dumped along Gilgo Beach. All are believed to have been killed elsewhere.
• 1. Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25) of Norwich, Connecticut was an escort who advertised her services online. She was last seen on July 9th, 2007, saying that she planned "to spend the day in New York City." She was never seen Shortly after her disappearance, a friend of Maureen's, Sara Karnes, received a call from a man on an unfamiliar number. The man claimed that he had just seen Maureen and that she was alive and staying at a “whorehouse in Queens”. He refused to identify himself and could not tell Karnes the location of the house. He told Karnes he would call back and give her the address, but never called again. Karnes said that the man had no discernible New York or Boston accent. Her body was found in December 2010.
• 2. Melissa Barthélemy (24) of Erie County, New York, went missing on July 10th, 2009. She had been living in the Bronx and working as an escort through Craigslist. On the night she went missing, she met with a client, deposited $900 in her bank account, and attempted to call an old boyfriend, but did not get through. Beginning one week later, and lasting for five weeks, her teenage sister, Amanda, received a series of "vulgar, mocking and insulting" calls from a man, who may have been the killer using Melissa's cell phone. The caller asked if Amanda "was a whore like her sister." The calls became increasingly disturbing, and eventually culminated in the caller telling Amanda that Melissa was dead, and that he was going to "watch her rot." Police traced some of the calls to Madison Square Garden, midtown Manhattan, and Massapequa, but were unable to determine who was making the calls. Melissa's mother noted that there were "a lot of calls to Manorville" from Melissa's phone around the time of her disappearance.
• 3. Megan Waterman (22) of South Portland, Maine, went missing on June 6th, 2010, after placing advertisements on Craigslist as an escort. The day before, she had told her 20-year-old boyfriend that she was going out and would call him later. At the time of her disappearance, she was staying at a motel in Hauppauge, New York, 15 miles northeast of Gilgo Beach. Her body was recovered in December 2010.
• 4. Amber Lynn Costello (27) of North Babylon, New York, a town ten miles north of Gilgo Beach, was a prostitute and heroin user who went missing on September 2nd, 2010. That night she reportedly went to meet a stranger who had called her several times and offered $1,500 for her services. Body was found in December 2010.
• March 2011:
The four additional sets of remains discovered on March 29th and April 4th were all within two miles and to the east of those found in December. They included two identified women an unidentified man, and a toddler. A skull and a partial set of remains were found on April 11th after the search expanded into Nassau County. They were found about one mile apart, approximately five miles west of those found in December.
• 5. Jessica Taylor (20) who resided in Manhattan, went missing in July 2003. On July 26th, 2003, her naked and dismembered torso, missing its head and hands, was discovered 45 miles east of Gilgo Beach in Manorville, New York; these remains were identified by DNA analysis later that year. Taylor's torso was found atop a pile of scrap wood at the end of a paved access road off of Halsey Manor Road, just north of where it crosses the Long Island Expressway. Plastic sheeting was found underneath the torso, and a tattoo on her body had been mutilated with a sharp instrument. On May 9th, 2011, it was reported that the remains of a skull, a pair of hands, and a forearm found on March 29 at Gilgo were matched to Taylor. She had worked in Washington, D.C., and Manhattan as a prostitute. Her body was found March 29th.
April 2011:
• 6. Valerie Mack (24) of Philadelphia, was previously dubbed "Jane Doe No. 6". A human head, right foot, and hands, found on April 4th, 2011, were determined to have belonged to an unidentified victim. The rest of her body was found on November 19th, 2000, in the same part of Manorville where most of Jessica Taylor's remains were later discovered. The victim's torso was found wrapped in garbage bags and dumped in the woods near the intersection of Halsey Manor Rd and Mill Rd, adjacent to a set of power lines and a nearby power line access road. Her right foot had been cut off high above the ankle, possibly to conceal an identifying mark or tattoo. The dismembered remains of Jessica Taylor and "Jane Doe No. 6" were both disposed of in a similar manner and in the same town, suggesting a link. In September 2011, police released a composite sketch of "Jane Doe No. 6", saying she was about 5' 2" and was between 18 and 35-years old. On May 22nd, 2020, Suffolk County Police announced that they had positively identified and on May 28th, 2020 it was announced that the remains had been identified as Mack, who had last been seen by family in Spring or Summer of 2000 in the area of Port Republic, New Jersey. Mack had also gone by the name Melissa Taylor, and had worked as an escort in Philadelphia.
* April 2011 (cont.) w/ Unidentified Victims:
* 7. "John Doe" (17)/(23) was also discovered on April 4th, 2011 at Gilgo Beach, very close to where the first four were discovered in December 2010, was the body of what appeared to be a young Asian male who died from blunt-force trauma. In September 2011, police released a composite sketch of the victim. They stated that he had likely been working as a prostitute and was wearing women's clothing at the time of his death. He was missing four teeth and had been dead for or between 5 and 10 years. He is believed to have lived as a woman, perhaps being killed when the killer found out he was not a woman, and to have had some kind of musculoskeletal disorder which would have affected his gait.
* 8. "Baby Doe" was the third body found on April 4th, 2011, about 250 feet away from the partial remains of "Jane Doe No. 6,". The remains were that of a female toddler between 16 and 24 months of age and had already decayed into a skeletal form. The body was wrapped in a blanket and showed no visible signs of trauma. DNA tests determined that the child's mother was "Jane Doe No. 3", whose body was found 10 miles east, near Jones Beach State Park, just days after this discovery. The toddler was reported to be African-American and was wearing gold earrings and a gold necklace.
* 9. "Peaches/Jane Doe No. 3" was discovered on June 28th, 1997. The dismembered torso of an unidentified young African-American female was found at Hempstead Lake State Park, in the town of Lakeview, New York. The torso was found in a green plastic Rubbermaid container, which was dumped next to a road along the west side of the lake. Investigators reported that the victim had a tattoo of a heart-shaped peach with a bite out of it and two drips falling from its core on her left breast. On April 11th, 2011, police in Nassau County discovered dismembered skeletal human remains inside a plastic bag near Jones Beach State Park, nicknamed "Jane Doe No. 3". DNA analysis identified this victim as the Mother of "Baby Doe"; she wearing gold jewelry similar to that of her daughter. In December 2016, Peaches and Jane Doe No. 3 were positively identified as being the same person.
-? Victims Unofficially Involved in LISK murders.
*The person(s) involved have not been officially linked with the other LISK murders, and are still being reviewed by police.
-? Tina Foglia (19) was last seen in the early morning hours of February 1st, 1982 at a rock music venue in West Islip. She was a known hitchhiker. Her dismembered body was discovered by Department of Transportation workers on February 3rd, 1982 along the shoulder of the Southern State Parkway. Her remains were placed in three separate plastic garbage bags, and were found a few miles north of the Robert Moses Causeway, which leads to Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach. A diamond ring that Foglia was known to wear was missing, and the DNA of an unknown male was found on the garbage bags. Police have not ruled out the possibility that Tina Foglia was an early victim of the Long Island Serial Killer.
-? A suitcase containing the dismembered torso of an unidentified Hispanic or light-skinned African-American female washed up on a beach at Harbor Island Park, in the town of Mamaroneck on March 3rd, 2007. The victim had a tattoo of two cherries on her left breast, similar in appearance to the tattoo found on Peaches. The former was determined to have been stabbed to death. Never identified, the victim is referred to as "Cherries" by investigators. One of her dismembered legs washed up at Cold Spring Harbor on March 21st, 2007, and the other at Oyster Bay in the village of Cove Neck the following day. "Cherries" was dismembered in a fashion similar to three other victims (Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and "Peaches") meaning she may be linked to the other official victims.
-? On May 17th, 2011, the New York Post reported that Long Island police were revisiting other similar unsolved murders of prostitutes. Named in the article was Tanya Rush (39) a mother of three from Brooklyn whose dismembered body was found in a small suitcase in June 2008 on the shoulder of the Southern State Parkwa zzzy in Bellmore, New York.
-? Shannan Maria Gilbert (24) was an escort who may have been a victim of the Long Island serial killer. She left for a client's residence in Oak Beach after midnight on May 1st, 2010. At 4:51a.m. May 2nd, 911 dispatchers received a panicked phone call from Gilbert who can be heard saying that there was someone "after her" and that "they" were trying to kill her. She was last seen a short time later banging on the front door of a nearby Oak Beach residence and screaming for help before running off into the night. After nineteen months of searching, police found Gilbert's remains in a marsh, half a mile from where she was last seen. In May 2012, the Suffolk County medical examiners ruled that Gilbert accidentally drowned after entering the marsh. They believe that she was in a drug induced panic, and have concluded that cause was "death by misadventure" or "inconclusive." Her family believes she was murdered. On November 15, 2012 a lawsuit was filed by her mother, Mari Gilbert, against the Suffolk County Police Department in the hopes of getting more answers about what happened to her daughter the night she went missing. Famous Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden agreed to conduct an independent autopsy of Gilbert's remains in hopes of determining a clear cause of death. Upon examination of Gilbert's remains, Baden found damage to her hyoid bone, suggesting that strangulation may have occurred. Baden also noted that her body was found face-up, which is not common for drowning victims. Despite this, her death is still officially listed by police as an accident.
-? On January 23, 2013, a woman walking her dog found human remains intentionally buried in a small piece of brush in a sandy area along the shore at the end of Sheep Lane in Lattingtown, near Oyster Bay. The remains are believed to be of a woman between the ages of 20 and 30, possibly Asian. She was wearing a 22-karat gold pig pendant, which may be a reference in some Asian cultures to "The Year of the Pig." This leads some to believe she died at the age of 29. There was trauma caused to her bones; investigators believe she was buried before Hurricane Sandy in late 2012. Her case may be connected to the other 10 bodies found 32 miles away in and around Gilgo Beach.
-? On March 16, 2013, Natasha Jugo (31) was last seen leaving her home near Alley Pond Park, Queens. Her car was found along Ocean Parkway and some of her clothes and belongings were found in the sand near Gilgo Beach the following day. Jugo was described as 5'7, 120lbs with brown eyes and blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a black robe, pink pajamas, gray hooded sweatshirt, black coat, and black boots. Police are unsure whether the case is connected to the LISK victims. Jugo's family said that she had "a history of problems in which she thought people were following her." On June 24, 2013, Jugo's body was washed up on Gilgo Beach.

Canada's Ontario says 'more extreme measures' on the table as COVID-19 cases rise (Reuters) Ontario is considering “more extreme measures” on top of the widespread lockdowns in place, the premier said on Friday, after the Canadian province reported a second straight day of record-breaking COVID-19 cases. “I’ve never stressed this so much, all the way going back to March, as I am now: We are in a crisis,” Premier Doug Ford told reporters, begging people to wear masks, wash their hands and stop gathering in groups. The warning from Canada’s most populous province comes as Quebec, the worst affected province from the pandemic, is set to start a nightly curfew on Saturday. Ford said if people did not better follow public health guidelines “we will have to look at more extreme measures. … Everything is on the table right now.”
Capitol Attack Leads Democrats to Demand That Trump Leave Office (NYT) President Trump’s administration plunged deeper into crisis on Thursday as more officials resigned in protest, prominent Republicans broke with him and Democratic congressional leaders threatened to impeach him for encouraging a mob that stormed the Capitol a day earlier. What was already shaping up as a volatile final stretch to the Trump presidency took on an air of national emergency as the White House emptied out and some Republicans joined Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a cascade of Democrats calling for Mr. Trump to be removed from office without waiting the 13 days until the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. The prospect of actually short-circuiting Mr. Trump’s tenure in its last days appeared remote. But the highly charged debate about Mr. Trump’s capacity to govern even for less than two weeks underscored the depth of anger and anxiety after the invasion of the Capitol that forced lawmakers to evacuate, halted the counting of the Electoral College votes for several hours and left people dead, including a Capitol Hill police officer who died Thursday night.
With Democrats in Control, Biden Moves to Advance Agenda (NYT) With his victory recognized by Congress and his party set to control both the House and Senate, President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. moved on Thursday to fill out his cabinet, while his aides and allies drafted plans for an ambitious legislative agenda headlined by $2,000 stimulus checks to individual Americans. The president-elect’s ability to push through key parts of his agenda and win confirmation of his cabinet selections received a significant lift this week, as Democrats picked up two Senate seats in Georgia, resulting in a 50-50 split. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has the power to cast the tiebreaking vote, which would give Democrats control of the chamber. As part of what he has pledged will be a next round of economic assistance, Mr. Biden is expected to move quickly to gain passage of $2,000 stimulus checks—which were a big focus in the Georgia elections—along with expanded unemployment benefits, aid to state and local governments and additional relief for small businesses.
Police Failures Spur Resignations and Complaints (NYT) Six days before a raucous rally of President Trump’s supporters in Washington, Representative Maxine Waters anxiously grilled the chief of the Capitol Police about his preparations for various scenarios. Ms. Waters, a California Democrat, said each of her concerns was met with a similar response from Chief Steven Sund during their hourlong call: “He assured me that they have everything under control, that they were on top of everything.” They weren’t. Instead an angry mob of pro-Trump extremists swarmed the barricades around the Capitol on Wednesday, spraying chemical irritants and wielding lead pipes, injuring more than 50 officers. They battered doors, broke windows and scaled the walls, rampaging through the building as congressional leaders made desperate calls for help. The Capitol Police seemed to offer little resistance and arrested only 14 people. Chief Sund handed in his resignation on Thursday after pressure from congressional leaders. Policing experts noted the absence of crowd-control tools such as mounted officers, police dogs or a heavily manned perimeter. Pentagon officials said Thursday that the Capitol Police had turned down an offer for additional National Guard troops before Wednesday’s storming of the Capitol, and two law enforcement officials said they had initially rebuffed help from the F.B.I. as the mob descended. But others in law enforcement insisted that the president’s encouragement of the mob could not have been anticipated. “No one expected the president to say, ‘Hey guys, let’s all go down to the Capitol and show them who’s boss,’” said Jose Cervino, who worked for the department for 14 years and helped plan security for large events and protests. Mr. Cervino defended the hesitancy to use weapons, saying the department’s primary mandate was to protect the lawmakers, not the building. “We have the members and we have the leadership secured. Is it correct to start shooting people?” Mr. Cervino asked. “I can’t imagine that I would be happier today if we found out we kept the crowd out, but wound up shooting 40 people.”
Capitol siege raises security concerns for Biden inaugural (AP) The violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol is intensifying scrutiny over security at an inauguration ceremony for President-elect Joe Biden already reshaped by a pandemic and the prospect that his predecessor may not attend. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take the oath of office from the Capitol’s West Front, one of the very locations where a violent mob overpowered police and stormed the building. They also scaled and occupied the scaffolding and bleachers in place for the ceremonies. The congressional leaders responsible for coordinating the inauguration insisted Thursday night that events will move forward. Security forces have already begun taking extra precautions in the wake of Wednesday’s mayhem. Roughly 6,200 members of the National Guard from six states—Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland—will help support the Capitol Police and other law enforcement in Washington for the next 30 days. Crews also erected on the Capitol grounds tall, black metal fences designed to be impossible to climb. Those who have worked on previous inaugurations said that while this year’s events will look different, the tradition of passing power from one administration to another will continue. President Trump, however, has confirmed that he will not attend the inauguration.
Some U.S. Capitol rioters fired after internet detectives identify them (Reuters) Some of the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol were fired from their jobs on Thursday after internet sleuths publicized their identities. The District of Columbia police department released photos of people in Wednesday's melee and potential charges against them. Some 68 people were arrested after angry protesters stormed the building, breaking windows, damaging fixtures and stealing furnishings. The FBI also asked the public to help it identify rioters, a call that drew ribbing on social media in light of the prolific coverage of the event. This included selfies posted by participants and videos of President Donald Trump's supporters at area hotels before the attack. Some individuals who had previously been photographed at Trump rallies and supporters of the QAnon conspiracy-theory movement were quickly identified. Online detectives focused their efforts on others. "Let's name and shame them!," read one Twitter thread here devoted to outing participants.
Vaccine rollout hits snag as health workers balk at shots (AP) The desperately awaited vaccination drive against the coronavirus in the U.S. is running into resistance from an unlikely quarter: Surprising numbers of health care workers who have seen firsthand the death and misery inflicted by COVID-19 are refusing shots. It is happening in nursing homes and, to a lesser degree, in hospitals, with employees expressing fears of side effects from vaccines that were developed at record speed. More than three weeks into the campaign, some places are seeing as much as 80% of the staff holding back. “I don’t think anyone wants to be a guinea pig,” said Dr. Stephen Noble, a 42-year-old cardiothoracic surgeon in Portland, Oregon, who is postponing getting vaccinated. “At the end of the day, as a man of science, I just want to see what the data show. And give me the full data.” Stormy Tatom, 30, a hospital ICU nurse in Beaumont, Texas, said she decided against getting vaccinated for now “because of the unknown long-term side effects.” “I would say at least half of my coworkers feel the same way,” Tatom said.
Freezing Madrid braces for heaviest snowfall in decades (Reuters) Spain’s capital Madrid and much of the neighbouring region of Castilla-La Mancha were on high alert on Friday for what meteorologists expect to be the heaviest snowfall in decades, brought by the Storm Filomena. Such events are rare in the region and tend to be disruptive to daily life and mobility, coming at a time when people are returning home after Christmas and New Year holidays. This year, however, there is less traffic than usual due to restrictions to curb the coronavirus pandemic. With up to 20 cm (nearly 8 inches) of snow forecast in 24 hours and temperatures expected to hover around zero centigrade for much of the day, the south of the Madrid region, including the capital, is on its highest level of alert for the first time since the system was created in 2007.
The Pandemic Helped Reverse Italy’s Brain Drain. (NYT) When Elena Parisi, an engineer, left Italy at age 22 to pursue a career in London five years ago, she joined the vast ranks of talented Italians escaping a sluggish job market and lack of opportunities at home to find work abroad. But in the past year, as the coronavirus pandemic forced employees around the world to work from home, Ms. Parisi, like many of her compatriots, seized on the opportunity to really go home, to Italy. In between Zoom meetings and her other work for a recycling company in London, she took long strolls on the beach near her family’s home in Palermo, Sicily, and talked recipes at dawn with vendors in the local market. “The quality of life is a thousand, thousand times better here,” said Ms. Parisi, who is now in Rome. As with so many things, the virus has upended a familiar phenomenon—this time Italy’s longstanding brain drain. Italy, along with Romania and Poland, is among the European countries that send the most workers abroad, according to figures from the European Commission. Taking into account the money the country spends on their education, Italy’s brain drain costs the country an estimated 14 billion euro (about $17 billion) every year. The Italian government has welcomed the return of some of the country’s best and brightest as a silver lining to what has been a brutal pandemic for Italy, calling the shift a “great opportunity.”
Kyrgyzstan votes (Foreign Policy) Voters in Kyrgyzstan go to the polls on Sunday to vote for a new president and decide a referendum on constitutional reforms. Acting Prime Minister Sadyr Japarov has been touted as the likely winner, if he can pass the 50 percent threshold necessary to avoid a runoff. Victory would cap an unlikely rise for Japarov after he was sprung from jail in October during unrest over disputed legislative elections. Japarov had been serving an 11-year sentence for kidnapping.
Gold in India (Rest of World) India is one of the largest global consumers of gold, buying 700 tons annually, with an estimated 25,000 tons of gold stockpiled by Indian citizens, a value three times the reserves of gold held by the U.S. government. Gold is frequently given to female babies as a gift and included later as part of their dowries, but it’s also an incredibly useful asset in terms of gaining access to credit by using it as collateral. Manappuram Finance, a large lender, offers gold-backed loans, and customers such as independent business owners and farmers on average borrow $612 several times per year, with under 1 percent defaulting. The two largest gold lenders in India hold 248 tons of it, which is more than Australia has in reserve.
China city offers cash for tip on test evaders (AP) A city in northern China is offering rewards of 500 yuan ($77) for anyone who reports on a resident who has not taken a recent coronavirus test. The offer from the government of Nangong comes as millions in the city and its surrounding province of Hebei are being tested as part of efforts to control China’s most serious recent outbreak of COVID-19. The offering of cash or other rewards for information on political or social nonconformists has a long history in China, but the pandemic is putting a new face on the practice. Those found noncompliant will be forced to undergo testing and a two-week quarantine at their own expense.
Can’t go to ski resort? South Koreans rush to buy sledges, enjoy sledding near home (Reuters) With South Korea’s ski resorts closed in recent weeks to help combat COVID-19, heavy snowfalls have led to a surge in sales of sledges as winter sports lovers look for family friendly snow slopes close to home. Major retailers have run out of stocks of plastic sledges, with E-Mart, the country’s biggest supermarket chain, selling nearly 2,200 sledges in six days, more than three times its total 2020 sales. After heavy snowfalls earlier in the week, children played outdoors even as the temperature in Seoul plummeted to -18.6 Celsius (-1.5 Fahrenheit) on Friday, the coldest in 35 years.
Almost 2.3 million people need aid in Ethiopia’s Tigray: U.N. report (Reuters) Fighting is still going on in several parts of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region and almost 2.3 million people, or nearly half of the population, need aid, a U.N. report said. The report, the most comprehensive public assessment of the humanitarian situation in Tigray since conflict erupted there on Nov. 4, was posted online late on Thursday. It said food supplies were very limited, looting was widespread and insecurity remained high.
Uganda’s election shapes up as a contest of young vs. old (Washington Post) Uganda is an overwhelmingly young country, led by a 76-year-old seeking a sixth term as president. Two-thirds of registered voters are under the age of 30, which means Yoweri Museveni has led Uganda for their whole lives. His main challenger in next week’s election is a 38-year-old musician who was a toddler when Museveni took power as leader of an armed rebellion. And so the contest between the grandfatherly incumbent and the spindly singer-turned-politician, Bobi Wine, has come to embody the most essential of democratic divides: change vs. stability, idealism vs. wisdom, the frustrated young vs. the fearful old. Who wins may come down to how many young people buy into Museveni’s warnings that a vote against him is a vote for destabilization. But the outcome also hinges on whether Wine and his supporters can withstand the repressive tactics Museveni’s security forces have unleashed in recent months that may escalate as election day nears. Since announcing his candidacy, Wine has been arrested three times, as have at least 600 attendees of his rallies. Police say they violated pandemic protocols against large gatherings. His bodyguard was killed, his lawyer arrested, reporters who cover his campaign have had their accreditation revoked, and after Wine’s second arrest, protests were met with bullets and at least 54 were killed.
Books (Publishers Weekly) Sales of print books were up 8.2 percent in 2020 year-over-year, according to NPD BookScan, with 750.9 million books sold. That’s up from 693.7 million in 2019, and is a solid performance, especially given the tumultuous spring market. Books for children and young adults saw sales explode: in nonfiction—a staple of attempting to learn from a place that is not a school—juvenile sales were up 23.1 percent and young adult nonfiction was up 38.3 percent, and on the fiction side, the juvenile segment was up 11 percent and YA was up 21.4 percent. Adults bought more books too—nonfiction was up 4.8 percent and fiction was up 6 percent.
