"Utena Tenjou punches the stone ground so hard that her fist breaks, and drags her broken body to the heart of the world. She bleeds pure love, and the mechanism cannot bear it."
-The Palace Perspective: Nanami Kiryuu at the Heart of the World, an essay on sibling dynamics in Revolutionary Girl Utena ("Part Three: Deer in the Works")

I Watched the James Somerton Video on Utena So You Don't Have Too
I'm well aware I really didn't have to do this and that engaging critically with Somerton is a bit of a useless endeavor after both the revelations about his plagiarism, misogyny, and "making shit up". No one should have to do it, but unfortunately because this is a show I love I sort of want to.
I wanted to go through the video myself and give my own two cents about a show that's near and dear to my heart, and hopefully direct your attention to some better Utena analysis afterwards.
At the bottom of the document, there is a list of various Utena analyses, both written and video essays, that I hope you will check out.

Nanami: which one of you was gonna tell me that tea tastes different if you put it in hot water vs cold water Juri: You're putting it in cold water? Miki: Nanami. Answer the question Nanami. Nanami: Yeah? I thought that people just put it in hot water to speed up the tea-ification process. Didn't realize there was an actual reason. Miki: You don't have the patience to microwave water for three minutes? Juri: Why are you putting it in the microwave to boil it? Miki: You think I have the patience to boil water on a stove?? Juri: It takes LESS THEN A MINUTE Miki: BESTIE IS YOUR STOVETOP POWERED BY THE FRICKING SUN Touga: fricking? Juri: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO BOIL A CUP OF WATER ON THE STOVE Miki: LIKE SEVEN MINUTES Juri: just stick the mug on top of the stove on medium heat and it boils in like two minutes. less than that and you use a saucepan Touga: You're putting the whole mug on the stove? On medium heat?? Your stove is enchanted Wakaba: every single person in this room is a fucking lunatic Saionji: DO NONE OF YOU OWN A FUCKING KETTLE

Utenanthy get two because they’re very dear to me and because I could not think of a fourth ship
ID: A man in a black shirt, baggy red pants, checkered socks, and a baseball cap stands in a dimly lit stairwell with the words “you know my [gay ships] not my story” captioned in front of him, though gay ships was clearly edited in. Around him are four images
Top left: Utenanthy stabbing scene
Top right: Juriori official art
Bottom left: Kozue and Nanami talking with the queerplatonic flag between them
Bottom right: Official art of Utenanthy cuddling

Rough Render: Girl Referenced from Anthy Fanart
(April 9, 2024)
Referenced From: [...]
My second time at rendering.
The background was doodled by me as I was trying out Clip Studio Paint's new 'Perceptual' colour-mixing for the first time. It's not unnice, no?
This image was made with reference (for the hair and use of colour, above all) by what I'm pretty sure I'm remembering correctly is a fanart for Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Tumblr media
You can see what elements I studied most closely than others, perhaps.
But the source of this image, to which I greatly apologize, I have lost.
Can anyone locate or does anyone recognize the original artist who actually made this? I tried using Google Image search but for some reason all the exact matches just sent me to random unrelated blogs. I'm not sure how to actually find it, even though I know it is from Tumbr.
If anyone can link me the original artist of this piece, I will edit and reblog this post with a link to that original work under the title.
My weird way of talking aside I also seriously do apologize to the original artist for not saving your name properly--in the very first place. If you're reading this, I shouldn't have neglected to record it, and I hope you can forgive me this time.
If at any point I do end up posting more art that is referenced from other people's works like this, (I study a lot.) This kind of mistake will not be made again.

“I wanted a place to belong, and I believed that place was “somewhere else.” Everyone needs to hear someone say, "Nobody else will do. It has to be you," sometime in their lives, even if it only happens once. Just once is enough. As long as you can feel sure those words were sincere, you can live through anything, no matter how painful.”

Note
the revolutionary girl utena manga and anime are two very different stories btw when most ppl recommend utena theyre recommending the anime, not the manga. the anime is, significantly more gay tbh
Ohh ok, I didn’t know that thanks for the heads up! So would you recommend I watch the anime first and THEN read the manga, or should I just not read the manga altogether?

“The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.”
Demian: Die Geschichte von Emil Sinclairs Jugend (Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth) | Herman Hesse | 1919) I should also mention that the world egg or cosmic egg is also a mythological motif found in numerous traditions around the world.
