The Queen's Destiny
Here’s a fun new meme comic! This one was inspired by a comment that Akumu_Oukoku put up on the ol' Discord the other day, where they wished to see the Pyrrha/Cinder destiny exchange brought back up in a climactic showdown with Weiss/Jaune about to die only for the other to come to the rescue and save the day.
I’m pretty happy with this one, especially that flashback panel. Drew Winter a sweater for her little sleep over and story time with Weiss, and I based that sweater off of the sweater TheWestphalianGwent gave to Weiss in his meme. It was a lot of fun editing that panel, giving Winter her smirk knowing Weiss is enamored with the Rusted Knight, shifted those eyes over for that side-eye, set the eyelids down to emphasize that smug look, drew up the book and some minimalist cover art of the best scene in the show, edited out Weiss sitting in her chair in the background as well as the reflection in the floor, replaced Weiss with her adoring Adrian version. It all turned out really good.
Some of you may have caught my early reference to my own Taking Out the Trash meme to start things off. Threw in the ol’ chibi Ghost Pyrrha, for those with a discerning eye. Added another reference to one of my own Therapist Ozpin memes, Cindere is always a good source of fun. Panel 5 reuses a really beautiful thinking Weiss asset that I used in my Culmination in a Kiss meme. And we cap things off with a Fist of the North Star reference. Honestly feels like I’m building up my own cinematic meme universe with all the references and the interconnected plots. I need to get around to my Agent Zwei continuation of that Taking Out the Trash meme, feels a little funny that I skipped forward past that one’s conclusion.
Anyway, hope you all enjoy!

Linktober #25: Ganondorf Takizawa on Ganondorf’s design iteration in Ocarina of Time, 1998.
Source: GlitterBerri's Game Translations
https://www.notion.so/0e093b22620540768a1681ec5a80d336
PEOPLE:
Satoru Takizawa, age 26. Ocarina of Time Character Designer.
QUOTE: "Takizawa: My first impressions of Ganon [for Ocarina of Time] were of a twisted thief with a complex, and my intention was to create the character in that image. However, the character design team and the script director Toru Osawa told me that this time Ganon would be … a ‘great fist’ like Raou [from Fist of the North Star]. They wanted to show a more charismatic big-shot, so I changed my thoughts accordingly.
Ganondorf grew his hair out from the first time you saw him to seven years later. We ended up making 3 forms for the final Ganon. At least temporarily, Ganondorf sort of has a Christopher Lambert-type [Highlander actor] image."

How to get into Hokuto no Ken, A Guide
Hokuto no Ken, localized as Fist of the North Star, is the wildly popular and influential series penned by Buronson and drawn by Hara starting in 1983. It is a timeless tragedy about the power of love that taps into imagery from both Catholicism and Buddhism, while also being an homage to a variety of western 80's pop culture from Mad Max to Blade Runner to Rocky.
In the current anime fanscape, HnK is perhaps best known for being one of the key influences behind Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Berserk, however it should be known that the series' influence permeates the entire Shonen genre. Traces of the tropes and dynamics that it popularized can be seen throughout Shonen today, from Naruto's drive for love and friendship that contrasts with Sasuke's rejection of the idea and desire to sever any bonds of love, to the implementation of Haki in One Piece.
So with all that in mind, let's get into the specifics.
The place to start with this franchise is very straightforward: read the original manga or watch the anime adaptation. There are a number of movies that retell parts of the original story, but they all have different downsides and cut important aspects of the source material and thus are a bad place to start.
This primary canon is broken down into two (three) parts, as follows:
HnK or "HnK1" is the core of the series, starting at the Shin arc through the originally intended ending at chapter 136/episode 108. Most of the time if someone is referring to HnK, this is what they are talking about. The beginning of the series is a bit of a slow start, bouncing between villains of the week before actually kicking off the primary conflict (especially in the anime, more on this later). This is somewhat typical for the era-- these early arcs were written while the authors had no idea if they were going to get dropped from Shonen Jump. For this reason, I highly recommend sticking with the series until the Fang Clan Chieftain and Jagi arcs even if the beginning hasn't clicked with you yet.
HnK2 is the continuation of the series, where the authors were pressured to continue working on the series because of the money it was raking in. This naming convention comes from the title of the anime for this portion of the story, chapters 136-210/episodes 110-152. Quite frankly, the fact that this is past the originally intended ending is very evident; Buronson has been quoted as never re-reading it after publication.[1] It's very much worth checking out at least once if you enjoyed HnK1-- there are absolutely memorable characters and fights, as well as some of the best art in the series-- but be prepared for a general drop in writing quality.
"Post-Kaioh HnK" or "HnK3" is the last leg of the original manga, which has never been adapted elsewhere. Chapters 211-245.
Content Warnings
Explicit Sexual Assault
The elephant in the room when discussing this series is that some social aspects of it are very of-the-era. There are two instances of explicit sexual assault, which get dismissed as "well the perpetrator didn't have the best execution, but he did have the right idea..." The pages/timestamps to avoid this are:
Manga volume 02 pages 287-289; volume 03, pages 063-066 (Ultimate Edition numbering)
Anime episode 24, 13:04-13:53; episode 26 08:29-09:22
Mild Gore
I almost feel like it goes without saying, but this is famously the series where the protagonist makes baddies heads explode. While this is never depicted in graphic detail, HnK as a whole is going to be a bad fit if this distresses you in any way.
An early example of the aforementioned head asplosions.
Photosensitivity
The anime makes period-typical use of flashing lights in nearly every episode. If you are photosensitive (and can't take measures to mitigate the flashing), you should read the manga instead.
If you want to read the manga...
The manga is the way that I personally recommend getting into the series due to Hara's absolutely gorgeous art.
The manga is also generally seen as the true 'canon'; For example, colorschemes used in subsequent works typically draw from colored chapter/volume covers rather than the Toei anime. For this reason, this version of the series is what the Japanese audience usually thinks of when they think of HnK.
I know some people are very passionate about redhead Mamiya and crest toothpaste-head Rei, but the Toei colors functionally exist in their own separate continuity.
Reading the manga in English is far better now than it was even three years ago, as there are multiple English versions now available.
The official VIZ release is the defacto highest quality out there (support the print copies if you can). While there are a few odd translation choices and the SFX have been replaced with English ones, it has the highest fidelity copies of the original art and even has the original color pages that have not been published since the original Shonen Jump release.
To think that these wonderful colored pages were completely inaccessible, even to JP audiences, until Viz started rolling out the English volumes.
However, the Viz release is ongoing and only covers until volume 11 at the time of writing. If you want to read the rest of HnK2 (or highly value the original SFX and a smoother translation), you should seek out the official eOneBook release. This is sometimes labelled as "Digital - 2018" and is a rip of an official English translation that was released for a specialized eReader, copies of which been floating around online since about 2020.
There is also an older set of scanlations out there, which I would not recommend reading; The image quality is low-resolution and muddy, and there are a number of edgy translation choices such as inserting a homophobic slur that was not in the original text. I only mention this translation because it's the one on many online manga sites. Please love yourself and look elsewhere if you realize that you are reading these scans.
(left) English-language scanlations (right) Viz release from 2022. I distinctly remember first reading these pages and then immediately scouring the web to find a version of it that didn't have the contrast blown out, only to discover that this quality was all that available. Now, newcomers to the series don't have to worry about this at all.
There are two different versions of the complete manga, the original tankobons (27 total volumes) and the Ultimate Edition (17 volumes).[2] Both the Viz release and the eOnebook release are derived from the Ultimate Editions while the old scanlations are from the original tankobons, so this can be an easy way to identify which version you are reading.
As to what makes these versions different aside from chapters per volume, the Ultimate Editions clean up some of the art in the last few volumes and also includes "Last Piece", a one-shot by Buronson and Hara inserted between HnK1 and HnK2. This was written as a part of the 30th anniversary celebration, and Hara's art looks quite different 30 years down the road, making the abrupt change in style rather jarring-- consider this your heads-up.
TL;DR Read the Viz version for volumes 1-11, and the eOnebook rips for the rest.
If you want to watch the anime...
The 1984 anime adaptation of HnK is an all-time classic. It's often what western fans will think of first, between the manga being legally inaccessible in English until very recently and constant anime reruns in some markets (especially parts of Italy and France).
youtube
Toei has a tendency to copyright-strike anime clips on Youtube, so hopefully this clip of the opening will stand the test of time.
The anime genuinely excels in a few departments, namely: music, sound design, and voice acting. Even if you don't decide to watch the anime, I highly recommend looking up the OPs/EDs and putting on the OST while reading the manga.
That said, there are definitely some downsides to the anime, a lot of which were typical for Toei animations of the era. Character models and direction are all over the place, some of the animation itself aged like milk, flashing light effects make the series difficult to get through for photosensitive viewers, and stock footage gets reused many times. There also isn't a complete English dub of the show, as it got cancelled after episode 36.
And the biggest caveat to the anime: Filler episodes. Oooooh boy, early HnK filler episodes are baaaad. They don't match the rest of the series tonally and completely botch any sense of pacing. Remember how earlier I said that the series takes a while to get its footing because of early bad-guy-of-the-week format? The anime drags this out for about twice as long by adding new bad guys of the week.
The infamous "Nanto Cannonball Fist", where users are launched from a cannon and descend on their opponents with a sword. Yeah, I don't know how this counts as a school of martial arts, either. [img source]
For a first watch through, I highly recommend following a filler episode guide to skip these episodes in the Shin arc and get a better feel for what the series is about. Post Shin-arc filler tends to be a lot better, as these episodes match the manga's original tone and often fix pacing problems in the source material rather than worsening them.
That said, there are a few early filler episodes that are well-liked by fans for one reason or another, which I will detail here.
Episode 17: A (non-canonical) view into the internal politics of Shin's army.
Episode 18: In which Kenshiro fights a tank.
Episode 19: The goofiest of the goofy filler episodes. If you want to watch one filler episode to get a sense of what they are like, watch this one.[3]
Episode 21: A continuation of some of the conflicts from episode 17.
Episode 38: Features one of the best-written woman martial artists you'll see in this franchise. (This is after Shin arc, but I had to point her out. Watch this one.)
Rage Quitter 87's fansite also has an excellent episode-by-episode guide covering anime and manga differences, which can be very useful for highlighting some of the more subtle differences between the two.
An anime remake that more closely follows the manga has been announced, but we have no further details on it at the time of writing. (I wouldn't hold my breath for this, it could be several years before we know more.)
TL;DR skip the episodes listed here under "Shin arc".
So I got through the main canon, what next?
The sheer amount of secondary content for HnK out there can be overwhelming. It's one of the most profitable IPs of all time, with the bulk of those profits coming from pachinko machines that will never make it to the west outside Youtube phone clips and asset-flip games (more on this later). When the series isn't being used to sell soap, there are a number of supplemental works that are absolutely worth checking out. In this guide I will focus on works that are currently available in English.
The Official Gaidens
A series of manga with different protagonists and created with different creative teams, the Hokuto side-stories fill in some of the gaps in the primary canon. Most of them are very loving additions to the continuity and are a good place to go after finishing the primary material.
Toki Gaiden: Silvery Savior follows Toki starting from the founding of the Village of Miracles and ends after his climactic final fight, providing his lens on the events of the series and his relationship with Raoh. This gaiden does a good job of understanding what fans like about the series, and has a lot of secondary character interactions that were missing in the original work such as conversations between different Ken-oh underlings.
Jagi Gaiden: Flower of Carnage follows Jagi through his childhood, interspersed with the events of canon. This gaiden does a lot to explain why Jagi ended up the way he did, provides additional context to what the Hokuto children's training looked like, and how the world changed when the apocalypse happened. cw: rape
Yuria Gaiden: The Affectionate Mother Star follows Yuria before the apocalypse happens, giving us a snapshot of domesticity with Kenshiro, a better understanding of her abilities, and illustrating how her life was always influenced by those who had fallen for her.
Juza Gaiden: The Wandering Clouds follows Juza as meanders around canonical events, giving insight into what he was like as he shifted from wandering without drive or purpose to becoming a sworn guardian to the Last Nanto General.
Rei Gaiden: Bloody Wolf's Darkness is one that I wish I could leave off of this list, but that I will include for completeness' sake. It follows Rei before his appearance in HnK as he goes through the exact same character arc that he has in canon. The city that he wanders into has a setup directly out of a porn plot, thoroughly justifying the manga's ecchi genre-tag. cw: sexual assault. repeatedly.
Souten no Ken and Souten no Ken: Regenesis
Souten no Ken, otherwise known as Fist of the Blue Sky, is a prequel series that follows Kenshiro Kasumi, 62nd successor to Hokuto Shinken and uncle to the Kenshiro from HnK, as he has martial arts adventures and tumbles with gangsters in 1930's Shanghai. The series revisits many of the character archetypes from HnK and plays around with the same plot points in different contexts, ultimately dealing with themes of friendship and fate.
Souten no Ken is a complete manga, drawn by Tetsuo Hara with plot supervised by Buronson. Souten no Ken: Regenesis is a direct sequel that is currently ongoing, drawn by Hideki Tsuji and written by Hiroyuki Yatsu. Regenesis has been on hiatus since 2020 due to Hideki Tsuji's ongoing health problems.
While there are animes with both of these names, here I am referring specifically to the manga-- neither anime is worth your time.
There. Now you've seen the only things that matter from both animes.
Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise
Released in Japan as "Hokuto ga Gotoku" (Like a Big Dipper), Lost Paradise is an action-adventure game from the studio behind the Yakuza/Like a Dragon/Ryu ga Gotoku series. Fans of the RGG franchise will immediately recognize the game structure and mechanics, which balance advancing the main story thread with a semi-open world where the player can stumble into comedic sidestories and play assorted minigames.
youtube
Bartending is just one of the jobs that Kenshiro can take up in Lost Paradise.
The core story of the game features an entirely original cast, but most of the main characters of HnK show up for just long enough to have fights and cutscenes full of loving references to the source material. It's pure fanservice, in the non-horny sense of the word.
youtube
Team RGG really knows how to nail dynamic fight intros and epic QTEs.
Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage and Ken's Rage 2
youtube
Even though some of the character design choices for this game are painfully mid-aughties (looking at you, tribal tattoo pattern Ken), this intro still goes hard.
For many years the Ken's Rage series were the definitive HnK games, and with good reason. A Musou game much like the Warriors series, you can play as most main characters from the series and mow down waves upon waves of bandits. Some may find the gameplay repetitive, but it can also be relaxing depending on how you look at it. (If you've played a Warriors game before, you know what you're getting into.)
Ken's Rage 2 in particular brings "Dream Mode" to the table, which is a "what if" story mode told from the POV of each playable character. This gives us a lot of interactions that we didn't get to see in canon (such as the delightfully shippy Jagi story featuring Amiba) and also expanding on some characters that should have gotten more screentime in the original material.
Hokuto no Ken (1986 animated movie)
youtube
It's the movie produced by (largely) the same team as the anime, created simultaneously to the show. If you want to know what the anime would look like if it wasn't trying to stretch every yen as thin as it could, this is your ticket.
That said, there are some odd choices made to carve a 110 minute long arc out of the early manga. The movie starts with Ken receiving his iconic scars, and ends with the first confrontation with Ken-oh.
DD HnK
This officially kicks off the "HnK comedy series" part of this list. I feel like comedy in particular can be subject to personal tastes, so keep in mind that each of these projects approaches the series from a different angle and that some may resonate better than others.
DD HnK is a comedic take on what the Hokutobros would get up to if the world didn't end. They end up working at a convenience store managed by Ryuken (voiced by Akira Kamiya, the original VA for Kenshiro), where hijinks ensue when other characters from the series show up.
It's worth noting that there are two animes and a manga with this name. The first anime is a Flash-based ONA (which is hard to find nowadays, for understandable reasons) and the second anime is the TV anime; Both of these series as well as the manga are very largely different. All series are complete, although the English fan translation for the manga is ongoing.
youtube
DD stands for "Design Deformation", evidently.
Ichigo Aji (Strawberry Flavor)
An average day with the Holy Emperor.
Ichigo Aji follows Souther on his quest to make some good friends. :) No really, that's more or less the premise of this spinoff.
While there are animated IA shorts at the end of every episode of DD HnK2, the meat and potatoes of this series are in the manga. The manga is ongoing (albeit on long-term hiatus) and the English fantranslation is currently incomplete (also on hiatus). Each volume of the manga also has a serious chapter following different characters from the series, serving as "mini gaidens" of sorts.
Genius Amiba's Other World Overlord Legend - Even If I Go to Another World, I Am a Genius!! Huh? Was I Mistaken...
In what originally started as an April Fool's Joke, the Amiba Isekai is perhaps one of the most unexpected additions to this franchise. The story begins after Amiba's death at Kenshiro's hands, where he finds himself transported to a fantasy realm where magic and creatures like dragons are real. He decides to use his self-proclaimed "genius" to learn magic in lieu of the martial arts that he studied earlier.
This manga series started in 2021 and is is still ongoing, although the English fantranslation is incomplete and has been on hiatus.
End of the Century's Drama Shooting Arc
The End of the Century's Drama Shooting Arc, more colloquially known as the Actor AU, is a retelling of the series as though it was a live-action TV show, covering the efforts and foibles of the actors and production crew as they struggle to produce the series.
The manga for this series started in 2021 alongside the Amiba Isekai and is ongoing, although the English fan translation is currently incomplete (Noticing a reoccurring trend here? a12 and Sakura Leaves, if you're out there, we really miss your work 🥹). If you can navigate the points system (new chapters are free within a few days of release) and use Google Lens, you can get a rough translation from the official Comics Zenon website.
The Winckler Dub
While not intentionally a comedy spinoff, I'm including the Winckler Dub in this section. There are apocryphal stories about this dub being produced as a means to teach Japanese schoolchildren basic English, interviews point to this dub being a sincere project to create a version of this series palatable to an English-speaking audience.
Please, just unmute this series of clips.
The only editing I did here was to append the files. They just. Speak with pauses like that.
With several downright bizarre directing decisions (Raoh is a pirate now, evidently?) and some of the strangest line-reads I've heard in an anime, this relic of an older localization industry can easily fall under "so bad it's good". Watch this with a group of friends after having a few drinks or late night at an anime convention, ideally.
The dub does not cover the whole series, instead bundling sets of 4 episodes into a series of 6 movie-length "sagas": Shin, Ray (sic), Souther, Toki, Raoh, and Kaioh.
Hokuto no Ken: Legends ReVIVE
I feel like it would be a bit disingenuous to finish this list without mentioning Legends ReVIVE, the current ongoing gacha for the franchise. (Worth noting: I am the admin for the unofficial discord server for this game, which is also the largest and most active English-speaking community for HnK.[4])
This game is possibly one of the biggest lovenotes to the franchise as a whole, with character releases that reach into the most obscure pieces of fiction, from Last Piece to (formerly) Pachinko-only Gento practitioners. Early character models and story cutscenes were entirely asset-flips from pachinko models, but things have grown far past that in the game's past 4.5 years.
youtube
As a part of the 40th anniversary celebration for the manga, it was mentioned that there would be a new continuation of the manga's plot featured in-game, but at the time of writing we have little elaboration on this.
For a gacha, the game is relatively F2P friendly and doesn't ask much of your time on a day-to-day basis. But at the end of the day, it is a gacha that relies on predatory monetization and exploitation of gambling addictions. Caveat emptor.
But what about [x]...?
Legend of the True Savior: this movie series is another adaptation of the manga's plot, but this one doesn't really bring anything novel to the table. The same caveats about making a movie out of the manga apply, in that some odd choices get made to get arcs to fit in a movie timespan. It's there I guess, if you can stomach the artstyle.
Shin HnK/New Fist of the North Star: is victim-blamey rape apologia. There really isn't any reason I can recommend watching it, outside maybe looking up the final fight (where Junichi Hayama's direction really stands out) and the closing song (Oasis by Gackt).
Animated Gaidens (ex Ten no Haoh, Kenshiro Den, etc): these are one of the few things I haven't seen, and for the most part they don't come up in discussion. They're probably fine, but I just don't have the knowledge to comment on them.
Live Action Movie: don't. It's not even so-bad-it's-good, just don't.
In Conclusion
I hope this guide helped take the edge off of trying to figure out how to navigate such a sprawling series, and that it was genuinely informative about both what each work entails and the general context around it. This franchise is something I've really enjoyed digging into over the years and I did my best to convey that love and enthusiasm in this guide.
I may write more meta about HnK in the future, because I absolutely have a lot more to say. There's a lot for me to go on about regarding what the series means to me and why more people should pick it up, as well as putting together standalone character analyses from assorted ramblings on Discord.
Thanks for reading!
References
[1] From running the provided link through DeepL:
Buronson: By the way, I don't read much when a work is published in book form. As far as Fist of the North Star is concerned, the second part has never been published. Interviewer: What? Not even once? You didn't read it at all? Buronson: That's right. But I read the whole book from the beginning the other day.
[2] Not to be confused with the unrelated Master Edition, which was the first attempt to bring the manga to the English market. This version is a full-color version of the original tankobon release, of which only the first 9 volumes were completed. It can be a neat novelty to check out once you're familiar with the series, but the non-Hara colorings can be a mixed bag.
[3] There is a story that this episode was so goofy that it made Hara and Buronson visit Toei in person and tell them to cut that shit out. This claim comes from the book "Our Favorite Fist of the North Star" , which is a fanbook that featured some interviews with members of the anime studio staff, with absolutely zero input from Hara and Buronson themselves. Between the fact that Hara and Buronson were both stated to have been incredibly busy with producing HnK and did not have time to watch the anime and the fact that this claim directly contradicts how they barely met in-person during the production of the series, it seems likely that this bit was made up as a gaff and/or hyperbole by the interviewee.
[4] There are also smaller, more fandom oriented, centers for discussion-- but I'm not about to link them on a post that gets recirculated publicly.
Special Thanks
@/KiliHito (discord) for helping me source the interviews, digging into the truth about the fabled Nanto Cannonball episode, and giving me context for some of HnK's influence in modern shonen.
@takis-breathing-dragon for having the Winckler Dub clips on hand and spotting some typos.

From Sky and Telescope Magazine
The highly anticipated Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will come into evening view for Northern Hemisphere observers starting October 11th.
Note to Editors/Producers: This release is for viewers in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere from latitudes 25° to 50° north. This release is also accompanied by high-quality graphics; see the end of this release for the images and links to download.
For the first time in years, we're about to see an easily visible comet. Friday should bring the first evening glimpse of the comet, low in the west during twilight. The comet will appear higher in the sky and become easier to spot through the weekend. By early next week, it will be at its best for viewing.
For tens of thousands of years Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (pronounced choo-cheen-SHAHN), also known as C/2023 A3, has been falling in toward the Sun. Astronomers discovered it in early 2023 as a tiny, distant speck in large telescopes. Having just swung around the Sun on September 27th, it's now passing its closest by Earth, coming within 44 million miles of us on October 12th. For the next days, it will be showing off during its brief time of glory in the Sun's warmth and light.
How to See the Comet
"As soon as October 11th, ambitious comet spotters may pick up the comet during twilight just above the western horizon," says Sky & Telescope Contributing Editor Bob King. "Binoculars will help you see the comet throughout its appearance."
About 40 minutes after sunset on Friday, find a spot with a good view down to the western horizon. The first thing that will catch your eye will be the bright planet Venus, the Evening Star — that's your starting point. Hold your fist out at arm's length; the comet is about 2½ fists to Venus's right. The comet will still look tiny in Friday's twilight — like a hazy star with a small tail — and will set while twilight is still in progress.
But that's just the warm-up.
The next evening, on Saturday, October 12th, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will be a little higher and easier to find, and it will remain in view until a little later in twilight. Every evening thereafter, the comet will appear higher and more obvious. As twilight fades on Monday, October 14th, it will be two fists to the upper right of Venus (if seen from the northern U.S.) or to the right of Venus (if seen from the southern U.S.). As twilight turns to night, the comet will remain in view, its long, straight tail pointing up from the horizon.
The following few days should provide the best views as the comet gains height in our skies — despite light from the waxing gibbous Moon.
Around October 20th, a window of true darkness begins to open up between twilight and moonrise if you're far from the skyglow of city lights. But by then the comet, now high in the sky, will have started to fade and shrink. It will diminish into the distance in the following days, becoming invisible to the unaided eye later in the month even under ideal, dark-sky conditions.
Comet Origins & Fate
The comet came by its name from its discovery at both China's Purple Mountain Observatory (tsuchinshan means "purple mountain") and South Africa's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The two teams picked up the comet independently in early 2023, when it was still beyond Jupiter's orbit and some 50,000 times fainter than the faintest stars visible to the unaided eye.
The comet's solid nucleus, the source of the whole show, is a dirty space iceberg, probably just a few miles wide. It fell in toward the Sun from the cold and dark outer solar system, originating in a region referred to as the Oort Cloud. As the comet nears the Sun's warmth, some of the ices in its nucleus (water, frozen carbon dioxide, and other volatiles) evaporate. The ensuing haze of sunlit dust and fluorescing gas forms the comet's visible head and streaming tail, which can be many millions of miles long.
In September, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was visible to the unaided eye before dawn in the Southern Hemisphere, then before dawn in the northern parts of the world, brightening all the while. It swung around the Sun on September 27th and, fortunately for us, enters the Northern Hemisphere's evening sky while still glowing brightly. But as it recedes from both Earth and the Sun, it will dwindle relatively quickly — there's no hope of seeing it with the unaided eye on Halloween evening. It will probably remain visible through binoculars through early November. Its orbit is only weakly gravitationally bound to the Sun, so it will spend future ages coasting ever farther out of the solar system, probably never to return.
TOP IMAGE: The bright Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will first become visible in the evening sky on October 11th, appearing between Antares, the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, and Arcturus, the brightest star in Boötes. While opening night will have it competing against twilight, it will be both higher in the sky and more visible against darker skies on subsequent evenings. Sky & Telescope illustration

Source: garuzow (please, visit their Twitter to check other manga artists drawings, like Akira Toriyama and Eiichiro Oda)
Congratulations on your 40th anniversary!!!! ㊗️
New Yoshihiro Togashi drawing displayed at the HOKUTO NO KEN (Fist of the North Star) 40th Anniversary Exhibition that is currently taking place in Tokyo, at the Mori Arts Center Gallery (same place of the Yoshihiro Togashi Exhibition - Puzzle).
The illustration shows Kenshiro, the protagonist of the Fist of the North Star manga series, saying "Congratulationssss" (祝ううううう), and our dear Gon from Hunter x Hunter saying "Hidebu" (ひでぶ).
"Hidebu" is a made-up word by Testuo Hara, according to him:
"Hidebu!" is actually supposed to be a modification of the Japanese phrase "ittai desu" ("it hurts!"), but since the villains are in the process of exploding, the vocal sounds are shifted.
Some weeks ago, Togashi also visited his family's paper shop (冨樫紙店) in his hometown Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture, and left this signed illustration of Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio.
Source: verses06
The painting is dated September 20th, 2023, and says: "Thank you for the signatures and warm messages!!". Those who visit the paper shop can sign and leave a message in the visitor guestbook.
The paper shop is now run by his younger brother Hideaki Togashi, a very talkative person who was also a mangaka. Unfortunately, their mother passed away a few months ago. Those who had the chance to meet her, says she was a wonderful and kind person.

Darkness. She could not see. Thick tendrils swarmed her as her limbs flailed, as she tried to swim upwards. Cold water pushed into her lungs as her head spun, as her lungs felt like they were exploding. Panic was all she could feel. A lone, empty type of ache and struggle. Eyes. She could feel them on her as she prayed to escape as her limbs started to give out. Just prayed as she began to sink into the liquid shadows; but a sudden splurge and she seemingly found a second wind. On her own. And finally, a sparkle of light gleamed through as her very own north star.
Her throat was hoarse when she tried to call out Mihawk’s name, gingerly trying to touch him with her trembling fingertips.
Sabine was positive that it was him who sat at her side, eyes closed as his head rested against a fist. Her vision was blurry at best, as if her eyelids had been glued shut from how she had to pry them open. Disoriented, body feeling as if it’d been thrown from a boat and hit the waves too hard. But amidst the dull ache in her head, in her limbs, there was also an overwhelming sense of relief. Relief that she was waking up in bed not in that dreadful manor, but with Mihawk by her side and that he’d come for her.
It hurt to breathe as memories came back to her- the knife that plunged into her side. There’s bandages as she touched along her abdomen, feeling the fabric of the wrappings, showing it wasn’t a passing dream. She shuddered remembering how it felt to have the dive within her, how blood drained from it and it made her head woozy. It was a sickening feeling and one she tried to shake off, tried to breathe, swallow down her fears because she was alive. It was over.
“Mihawk.” She rasped out, mouth dry, once more attempting to reach for him.
This time his eyes snapped open, body awake as he regained his surroundings in a record speed. Warmth. It was all she could see written on his face as he looked at her. Such care plastered in his actions as he moved his chair closer, took her hand into his own and carefully cupped her left cheek with his other. Dilated pupils, parted lips, the faintest of pink dusting his cheek bones as he let out a deep shuddered breath, clearly relieved.
No words were shared as their gazes connected and wicked sparks dazzled around them. A sense of comfort relayed between them with no words needed, content to be back with the other.
“How did you..?” Sabine finally broke their silence as sudden panic alighted in her chest as more came back to her, “The other girl, Eve, where is she?”
“Marines took her for medical care. Giorgio is dead.”
Giorgio is dead. She swallowed hard, a mixture of confusion and solace came over her. It was if a piece of her was allowed to fly free, she was pounds lighter, the weight of her failures lifted, “I can’t believe… I’m glad, in a way.” A loss for words she found herself at. Like it was almost unbelievable.
“It’s over. You have every right to feel the way you do.”
But it wasn’t all about her though, was it? She wasn’t the only one impacted. In a way she could argue she never bore the brunt of the pain Giorgio caused.“Do you know if.. Is she- Eve okay?”
“I imagine so. Her injuries were less immediate than yours. I’m sure the Marines will help her get back on her feet.”
She nodded, thoughts still racing as she could recall them, “Did you.. Also see the girl in the basement?”
“No, but I heard about her after.” His stomach sourced at the thought of what Sabine had seen down there. He heard whilst the doctor was working on Sabine that multiple marines got sick from the sight, the blood and tools. Which meant her eyes should never have had to see it, it angers him.
“Help me sit up?”
Mihawk helped Sabine as she let out a pained huff, face contorted with a flash of pain. He was gentle with her, careful where he placed his hands, and careful as he resituated the pillows behind her. He did not mind as she clung to him with extra strength behind the hold, barely using her own muscles to assist him. Like she was a doll he had to support her fully and he saw the shame in her tired eyes.
Her bottom lip quivered, fingers grasping his shirt, “You won’t leave, will you?”
Taking a seat on the edge of the bed, Mihawk adjusted the shoulders of her gown and tentatively brushed back stray pieces of her hair. He wanted to be closer. Wanted to scoop her into his arms and hold her, take in her scent and the feeling of her skin. So close to losing her, the doctor had said she almost lost too much blood.
“No. Not until you wish me to.”
“Then I’m afraid we’ll never be apart.” Sabine gave her best smile, even if it was barely a sluggish half grin. But it still made Mihawk’s heart flutter, his insides shuddering with pleasure.
“I apologize… For not getting to you sooner, not knowing I was drawn away as a diversion.” For Mihawk, apologies were rare on his tongue, almost difficult to say. But his emotions towards feeling like a failure for not protecting her elicited the apology, he’d needed to get it out. Needed her to know he felt awful.
“Don’t. It’s not your fault or mine. Giorgio told me his attempt to draw you away took lots of planning and details for execution, that it tired him- something like that. Does it have to do with haki? But either way, he knew how tough an opponent you would be, and was mad at me for bringing you. But then he just left, had that disgusting puppet follow me, it… Tried to kill me.” Tears pricked her eyes, words spilling out, “And that girl in the basement, I could barely breathe. How could someone do that?”
“Sabine…” A sadness to his eyes, his chest deflated before he took in another breath. The cogs in his head churned furiously.
“I know, you don’t need to tell me. His victims started to look like me, I’m guessing that’s on your mind, I noticed it in the basement.”
He sighed as he positioned himself closer, taking her hands into his to relish her touch. Soft skin littered with goosebumps that trailed along each place he touched. Her presence seeped deep into his bones and his for her. Intricate, intertwining vines that scoured through one another’s veins, nerves, bodies. Rooting so deep, making it so it would be impossible to part, impossible to tug from the depths of where their connection sprouted from. That the necessities for a plant to be nurtured to grow big and strong (sun and water), every second Mihawk and Sabine had shared from Baratie to this wretched Isle in search of her answers- was that very food. Was what allowed them to grow.
“None of it was your fault.” Mihawk knew the girl in front of him well enough to know she’d find a way to blame herself, “Giorgio attached himself to you because you were the closest person to figuring him out a year ago even if you didn’t realize it. He could have latched onto anyone else he deemed a worthy adversary to his… way of life.”
“You mean his brutal torture basement, killing hobby.”
“Yes.” He cracked a smile, “Simply put.”
“And I know that… I mean he was odd during our time together,” She shuddered thinking back to the wine, to Giorgio’s unsettling behavior, “Gods I never want to think about him again.”
“Then don’t, for now. Let yourself rest.”
She could only smile at that, her chest fluttering as she lolled her head against the bed’s headboard. Looking at Mihawk with stars in her eyes, a heavy contentment to be in this moment with him built.
How long had she slept? She was still exhausted, feeling burdened physically and mentally. Like she was living in a fog, her eyelids began to flutter closed, heavier.
“Don’t let me sleep.” She mumbled, words beginning to slur.
Mihawk said he wouldn’t allow her to drift off, but if she’d seen his face she’d have known that was a lie. He shifted so he sat beside her on the bed, letting her head fall to his shoulder. ‘Out just as quick as she had awoken,’ it made him chuckle.
His heart wrenched in his ribcage as he watched her sleep looking so peaceful. How cute she was as she’d nuzzled further into him murmuring faint nothings. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to hold himself back for much longer, he gently laid her back down. Sleeping whilst propped up was not proper. And the longer she lay against him, the more likely he was to cave. To cave into the raging emotions and incessant reverberating that was the desire- endearment- love he felt towards her.
The following days meshed together as the doctor who patched her up wanted to watch over her for a while. And she was more than happy to lounge around all day, resting and being waited on. Cardinal Joseph came by plenty, Eve had visited as she was staying down the hall- all the while, Mihawk didn’t leave. Sabine already began to dread their parting. She knew, as the air turned stale and the time ticked forward, the conversation would be coming. For Sabine still had months remaining and she knew Nami would be getting impatient while waiting for a call. It was overdue.
Tears came down thickly. Sabine felt ridiculous as she carefully wiped them from her puffy eyes. Ridiculous for crying, for blubbering, for ruining her freshly applied makeup. There’d be no recovering it, especially as she stood at the docks.
Mihawk said he’d stay until the Going Merry arrived for her. Sabine insisted he leave first.
So it was their time to say goodbye, but with the knowledge there’d be a future meeting. A future meeting that could be their final, or the beginning to a fantastic unknown between them. How Sabine wanted to smash her lips up onto his, to pull him down by the neck and tangle her fingers through his brown hair. She wanted to feel his hands on her as he held her, showed her his emotions, and hoped he’d decide to not let her go. But Mihawk would not do that. He was noble in the sense he respected her and wanted the best for her (not in how he carried himself on the sea, she was sure).
His thumb swiped along her flushed cheeks, wiping away stray tears. The time Sabine had with him she could see the moroseness on his features, the stalled breath as he stared deep into her. Before, she would have thought him emotionless. It tugged at her heart strings, her lower lip trembled.
How vividly similar this moment was to the one they shared at Baratie, as Zoro bled out and Mihawk was leaving. How he kissed her forehead, bidding her words that she’d never forget.
He did that again, now. Mihawk’s lips on her forehead burned, pink flushed her cheeks and neck. Goosebumps swarmed her skin. Butterflies swam in her stomach and Sabine thinks the love clawing and expanding within her chest might just kill her. Love.
Sabine won’t tell him that she loves him, it’d be cruel to do to them both. Knowing she’d have one final chance at the end of her sabbatical quenched the need within her to spit it out. This didn’t feel like last time in the sense of goodbyes, she’d been confused and scared about Mihawk. Now, she was certain in her feelings and trust in him.
“I will see you soon.” He spoke low, every one of his muscles twitching to grab her and leave. To keep her close. It took all his willpower not to, especially how her eyes glittered with emotion for him.
“I would hope so. Wait… How will you know-”
“Don’t worry.” Those were his last words for her as he kissed her hairline, lips lingering.
Mihawk’s aura eventually was gone. His presence that had seeped deep into her bones, coursed through her veins had left the Island. And it hurt. Sabine wallowed in grief for him as her body screamed in metaphorical pain for him to come back, that she’d been foolish to send him away first.
Minutes- maybe hours passed before Sabine could get ahold of herself, could finally stop the tears. With the height of the sun in the sky, she knew she still had more time before the Going Merry would dock. With that time she’d tie up loose ends with Cardinal Joseph then gather her things from the hotel. It was a solid plan, but one she dreaded all together.
Sabine wandered back through the city, to the familiar gates and then architecture of the church Cardinal Joseph would be. But she moved lethargically, as if she were a ghost lost and looking for a way out of this plane of existence. She needed silence in a peaceful, holy place that would allow her to quell her worries to think. And think she needed to do. Because the end of her sabbatical would be upon her and no time and avoiding that fact any longer would only hurt her in the long run. It was time to properly sort out her emotions and the past, to come to terms with herself.
-
The second Sabine boarded the Going Merry, she was met by familiar faces she didn’t realize how much she had missed. Her name was yelled from the deck and before she knew it she was wrapped up in embraces. Sabine was almost certain based on how tight Luffy and Usopp hugged her, she’d have popped out her skin. She winced in pain due to their excitement putting her body through some unneeded action.
“Ah, let’s be careful.” She tried to smile, not wanting anyone to worry. She was older than all of them! It was her job in some sense to appear the most stable, or complete. While she couldn’t take care of them in fights, she wanted to be seen as capable on other fronts. So her cheeks begin to heat with pink, she didn’t want to immediately inform them of her escapades that almost led to her death.
“Are you hurt?” Luffy asked in terror as he saw the way she stiffened and hand shot to her lower abdomen.
“Maybe.”
Next she knew she was surrounded by the crew and bombarded with questions. Sabine wasn’t sure where to start precisely, it felt like a momentous task to explain now that it was over, now that Sabine could look at everything through a lesser emotional lens.
“I’ll just start from the beginning, the easiest thing to do.”
And she did, the proper beginning really.
They group settled below deck around the dining area in the kitchen. Filled with nerves for a reason she didn’t understand, she began to explain the events that led to her arrival at the Monastery, her mother and father. She talked of her struggle with faith after events with the Deacon, talked about the job that sent her to Angelica Island because of a supposed demon taking lives. Then the nightmares. And then, she told them of her last few weeks; Mihawk and Giorgio. It was a relief to tell them, to talk about her disconnect from what she once believed, and how grateful she was to be back with him. Thankful. Sabine felt lighter by the minute, even with a dull ache beneath her bandages, comfort coursed through her.
Zoro made a face, “So Mihawk was here?”
“Kidnapped?” Sanji’s mouth dropped.
“We parted for a few weeks and you almost died!”
“Hey at least there wasn’t an actual demon.” Usopp added, “That would be freaky.”
Sabine let out a faint giggle at their concerned comments, the horrified and semi confused faces. In that moment she wasn’t worried about her ending sabbatical or the fact she experienced multiple traumatic events. As much as her soul yearned for Mihawk, wished she could reach out and touch him, she was glad to be back on the ship. Fondness glittered in her eyes as she leaned back into her seat. The faces of these five helped her further the resolve that churned within her. Now all that was left was to wait; enjoy the following weeks.

On the matter of Jonathan Joestar
I talked a bit about how JJBA plays around with moral ambiguity with it's protagonists here and briefly mentioned how I'd talk about Jonathan separately and that time has come! There are certain aspects of his personality that I find interesting, but don't often see discussed and I'd like to dig into them a bit. Before we begin I will say that, while I did my best to draw from the source material, this does involve a degree of headcanon so take it with a grain of salt.
Background
The problem with Jonathan is that his character is woefully underdeveloped. This was the result of multiple factors such as, A) Jonathan being the first JoJo and Araki was still developing the story and figuring out what he wanted it to be. B) JoJo pt 1 was a product of it's time and was influenced by works of the period like Fist of the North Star. This was an era of power fantasies and led to stories of big beefy dudes punching things but without much in terms of nuance or broader character development. C) Pt 1 was given a much shorter arc at only 44 chapters and therefore Araki had less time to explore his character than future JoJos. Compare this with Battle Tendency being 69 (nice) chapters and Stardust Crusaders being 152 chapters. Because of all of this we are, unfortunately, limited in what we can glean of his personality from the manga, but there are a couple of things I want to touch on.
Duty vs Concern
While we might not see the type of radical character development from Jonathan that we see in later JoJos, what we do see is a shift in perspective as he matures. This can be seen in his first encounter with Erina.
This is a boy who was motivated less out of an altruistic motive and genuine concern and more out of a sense of duty. This is something he's been taught is the Right Thing for a Gentleman to do. A woman is in danger and a man swoops in and rescues her. It wasn't so much about protecting Erina as it was about being The Hero.
It isn't until he's able to spend time with Erina that he's able to see her as a real person and not just a damsel in distress. While their time together in those early days was cut short, I think it really helped Jonathan to broaden his perspective and sense of empathy. That's not to say that Jonathan was a bad person, he was just a rich kid who spent the majority of his life being a bit coddled, but each new relationship he gained helped him mature.
We see a shift from the young boy playing the role of The Hero because the thought it was expected of him to a man who puts his life on the line because he wants to, because he'll do anything to protect and avenge the people he cares about.
This is a man who has become hardened through the experience of loss and pain, and those experiences helped him to really truly care for others, not out of societal expectations or chivalry, but out of love.
Ironically, it's this growth that leads us to the thing you could argue is simultaneously Jonathan's biggest flaw.
Compassion to a fault
Jonathan is a character whose greatest strength is also his greatest weakness, that being his unyielding optimism. He's the type of person who is always wanting to see the best in those around him and it's this flaw that Dio took advantage of from day 1. Regardless of how much of a little shit Dio proved himself to be in their youth, Jonathan wanted to believe that wasn't beyond the point of redemption. He wanted to believe that there was a small part of Dio that had some goodness, that could experience regret and remorse even when all evidence proved to the contrary. And it was that optimism, that compassion which lead to Jonathan lowering his guard which allowed Dio to seize the opportunity and strike.
This was a quality that we also saw reflected in Jonathan's father, who also had a history of overlooking the glaring red flags in Dario, not because he was oblivious, but because he wanted to believe he'd become a better person. A quality which led to George taking in Dio even though he was under no obligation to do so, and (we can only assume), choosing to overlook any red flags the boy may have shown in his youth.
George's death was the shock Jonathan needed to realize the truth, that Dio was irredeemable and that he'd chosen to strip himself of his humanity long before donning the stone mask.
AND YET
In spite of the loss of his father and countless others during his quest to defeat Dio, there's still a small part of Jonathan that holds a bit of fondness for him, even at the end of all things. Jonathan's strength is that unlike Dio, he chooses to retain his goodness and humanity.
It was the goodness of Jonathan's heart that allowed him to perhaps be the only one who's ever truly known Dio, the only one who's seen beyond his bravado and facade. And it was this goodness that led to their fates being connected forever.
#jjba#jonathan joestar#jojo's bizarre adventure#character analysis#jojo no kimyou na bouken#b talks jojo#I am once again here to ramble about the silly beefy pretty man anime#I don't even know if this is coherent but I tried#it really is a shame that we didn't get to know Jonathan better#anyway as always open to hearing thoughts and opinions from others so if I done fucked up royally let me know lmao#honestly I probably could have written more about this but even I have my limits

HERE’s THE SOMBRA REQUEST WE ARE DESPERATE FOR
oh olivia, olivia- the two of you are sent out to gather some intelligence during a charity event. fancy dress up, blending in as the means of going undercover and leaving with the needed data before anyone could even think about being cyber attacked. but the two of you take your time to dance a little, embrace a sort of life you once dreamed of.
enjoy <3
Dancing in Wolves Clothing | Sombra HCs
Sombra is a woman who constantly finds herself falling through many webs that for once aren't Widowmakers
It is rare she ever has a moment of peace.
Materialistically upbeat, and teasing smile stained on her lips she hardly catches a break where she doesn't have to scheme.
Gabe said this would be reconnaissance, but Sombra says will be romance.
She hardly gets time with you. You two are split on purpose and there are times where Sombra finds herself glaring at herself in mirror, she wants to give you better, you DESERVE better than what she feels she's capable of giving.
She yells at Reaper, bangs her fist against his armor plate begging him to not be so stagnant, so dead. She no longer jokes with Widow, like reaper she only lives in the plain of death. She begins to feel sick of Talon. Sombra joined to know the truth of the world to help it not Akande's view of using it to turn people against each other in an unwinnable war of strength and blood. She doesn't need to think of Moira, the crimes of that doctor sicken her to the core with what she puts Sigma through.
Tonight, would be the last night she plays nice with Talon, because the next day she'll be gone like the wind and she's carrying you with her. If Baptiste could evade Talon for so long, so can she.
Tonight, she holds you in her arms and spins you dizzy with love.
The mood is heavy, even among a sea of rich silks and jewels, Sombra in her royal purple suit, hair slicked perfectly in turn with her circuits she finds the feeling between the two of you deep and electric like the thrumming of powerlines.
Raw untouched sensuality as her hand dips you at the waist the earpiece in her ear screaming orders that she promptly silences. She won't be dead, the Widow and the Reaper have done their dues, have lived their lives through and through, Sombra refuses to forfeit hers.
She connects to you faster than her circuits can process and through her implanted tech she can feel your vitals, your heartbeat as if it were her own. The warmth of your breath on her neck and she spins you again her hand tightening on the silk of your dress. Her eyes harden. She was lucky, she was born through fire and war, left orphaned by crisis and fear surrounded by ash. Like a pheonix she broke free and chased the truth more fervently than any journalist. Through her journey she found you, her guiding light. You're the wind at her back, you're the north star she looks to when lost. She knows she must fight for a better world for you two to live in. Sombra was born a fighter, but she hopes for a future where she no longer has to live like one. She desires her happy ending and that is why she fights. Sombra will fight to keep you laughing late into the night with her. Sombra will fight to fall apart in your arms when the battle is over. Sombra will fight to put that ring on your finger one day and without blood, promise you a soft epilogue.
Sombra's clever mask falls crooked, and she feels time slow as you cradle her face, looking into the myriad of thoughts churning behind the hacker's guarded eyes. Letting your thumbs swipe a stray tear Sombra grabs your hand and kisses it softly and you can feel the weight behind it.
So she dances, as she knows this is the last night, she will ger before fleeing Talon with you. She sways her hips she feels the flames of her inner phoenix rise. Sombra pulls you close to her, the music picking up. You are her one desire. You are the source of her burning passion. Her lips pressed hard against your ear and so many promises are left unspoken.
That night you are stripped bare before her tangled in silk sheets. The sweat, the kisses, the breaths of hot air cascading through Sombras soul. She holds your heart in hers and swear to protect it. She holds you as you come undone in her arms and she reassures you tearfully that it will all be ok, that she'll be here with you, no more secrets, no more terror, that things one day will be as simple as you are hers and she is yours. She herself is bare as she rides your thigh choked sobs falling from her lips as she reaches her high, she loves you and she will protect it so.
That night, curled up into her side, Sombra dreams of a better tomorrow, a new dawn waits for the two of you and she can't wait.
a/n: aaaa fuck I'm hit with feels tonight, I'm typically not a big fan of sombra but I wanted to do a deep dive with her. Yes I know her name is Olivia, but Sombra is a cooler name tbh

y'know, i like falco as much as the next red blooded gamer, but this whole "fist of the source star" thing sounds very bad fanfic-y to my ears. like ohhh yeah there's a third major martial arts school that's just as renowned and feared as the fist of the north star and the fist of the south star, even raoh respected how cool it was, and somehow we've never fucking talked about if before now. yeah. sure. whatever, man. and honestly? the name sounds stupid, im sorry falco, i love you man, your school name sucks shit

It might just be because I am 100% not at all familiar with the source material but Makoto P5's outfit does not look REMOTELY enough like any Fist of the North Star design for the amount of jokes they make about it
#persona 5#tell me if i'm blatantly wrong but i just don't get fist of the phantom star vibes from her outfit#also it just looks kind of weird and dumb imo
