went down a rabbit hole today research-wise and I'm officially going insane. why is one word being emphasised in modern sources and notably NOT backed up by the primary sources that claim to support it when other information on the same page is. why is there a whole article saying other words are far more common, enough that the usage can be graphed, whereas this word at the time is from what I can gather statistically insignificant in comparison. what is going on

#it's not that I don't think this word was used in that way either because there are examples of it!#it's just why is this one word being emphasised over the much more common ones. why isn't it being backed up by the numerous #primary sources that are claimed in the same paragraph to support this information. this is really weird!#it's all modern sources too! it's not so much that I want to prove or disprove its use like that I just wanna know why this is going on #if this was like say the history of cheese and the word 'tasty' was claimed by a bunch of modern sources to be the word for cheddar #and said 'there are a bunch of primary sources that say this is the word used' and then you try to find these primary sources and instead #you find the words 'cheddar' or 'colby' far more frequently I would still be just as confused #and still be just as curious as to why this is the case. it's like that.
