A TBB Mini-Meta: Crosshair's Two Sides
Tumblr media
This is a quick observation combining some of my own previous thoughts and a few that @yavln4 and other folks have discussed.
While it's not quite to the level of Harvey Dent/Two-Face from the Batman franchise, Crosshair has two distinct sides to him. I mean that more so in a physical sense, but I think there's something to be said about the emotional aspect as well.
Crosshair's right side represents who he is as a soldier and sniper.
Everything that serves as a physical reminder of his time in the Grand Army of the Republic and/or Empire is on his right side: His tattoo, the burn scar on his head, and his shaking/missing hand.
Additionally, the inhibitor chip was embedded on the right side of Crosshair's and the other clones' heads.
His right eye is also the one he primarily uses to aim. His viewfinder is on the right side of his helmet, which has zoom and infrared capabilities, and when he looks through a scope, he does so with his right eye.
I'm sure you all know exactly what I'm talking about but here are a few visual reminders:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, his left side represents Crosshair as a person -- specifically, as a brother and dad.
It is the side of him that is completely unmarred: No scar, no tattoo, no missing hand. It's his "normal" side, so to speak.
In general, a person's left side is traditionally associated with the heart (ie, wedding rings, etc.).
Crosshair also keeps his sidearm on his left side, which makes sense because he normally has his rifle in his right hand. I only mention this because he uses his left hand to kill Nolan in 2.12 "The Outpost," which becomes a HUGE turning point for him.
Additionally, when he collapses after shooting Nolan, he falls unconscious with his left side facing upwards. As someone else pointed out (I'm not sure who, but if I find the post I'll add the source and link here), this suggests that Crosshair has been "reborn." He's rejected being a soldier and is instead becoming his own person again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, as I've pointed out before, his left side tends to be associated with Omega and/or Hunter.
Of course, Crosshair uses his left hand to save Omega from Hemlock in the finale.
In several key scenes throughout the show, Omega and/or Hunter are on his left side. Examples include but aren't limited to:
Omega talking to Crosshair in the brig in 1.01 "Aftermath"
Omega talking to Crosshair while they're trapped in Nala Se's lab in 1.16 "Kamino Lost"
Omega finding him unconscious on Tantiss at the end of 2.16 "Plan 99"
The family meeting scene at Shep's in 3.05 "The Return"
Crosshair and Hunter reaching an understanding immediately after facing the Ice Wyrm in 3.05 "The Return"
Crosshair and Hunter talking to Ventress at the end of 3.09 "The Harbinger"
Crosshair and Hunter facing down Hemlock as he holds Omega captive in 3.15 "The Cavalry Has Arrived"
The group hug in 3.15 "The Cavalry Has Arrived"
BONUS: Hunter is also to Crosshair's immediate left when Echo joins CF99 in TCW 7.04
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Essentially, in S1, Crosshair's "two sides" were in conflict with each other. Initially, it was because of the inhibitor chip. However, once he regains his free will, he doesn't want to give up the life of a solider/sniper.
As much as he loves his family, in 1.16 "Kamino Lost," he ultimately chooses his identity as a soldier versus his identity as a brother.
I think that's why, when he shoots Nolan and collapses in 2.12 "The Outpost," it's significant that it's his left hand and left side that's given importance. He's finally choosing to be his own person again. He's rejecting his identity as a soldier.
Unfortunately, that choice is short-lived, as he is imprisoned at Tantiss for half a year. There, he's subjected to Hemlock's "re-education" efforts and develops a tremor in his right hand.
But, even after escaping and reconciling with his brothers, he can't completely let go of his identity as a soldier and sniper. Unfortunately, his fight isn't over yet. The Empire is still after Omega, and as long as they are, Crosshair's family won't be safe.
So, he continues to fight -- to be a soldier -- but for his family's sake this time.
It's not until CX-2 cuts off his hand in 3.15 that, in a sense, he's freed of that identity. I mean, what good is a sniper without his shooting hand?
As @yavln4 summarized nicely on my "Was there a better way to handle Crosshair's hand tremors?" post:
IMO, his hand doesn't represent his PTSD - it represents his identity as a soldier. It's more important to him than family in s1 due to reconditioning- it wavers after he loses Mayday- and it's completely severed from him before he finally rescues Omega. He goes into that final conflict not as a soldier, but as a parent.
It's only once Hemlock and Tantiss are subsequently destroyed that he's finally free to be his own person. Now, he can focus on just being a brother and a dad, and not have to worry about being a soldier again.
Of course, he'll never be able to erase he who was and the choices he made. His right side still remains -- his tattoo, his scar, his missing hand. And that part of him will be useful if he ever chooses to fight again.
But, he can be reborn. He can choose another path, another life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His right side represents who he once was, who he was created and born to be. His destiny and his purpose.
But, his left side represents who he is now, who he chose to be and how he wants to live. His future and his freedom.
Crosshair might've been "born" on his right side, but he chose to live on his left.

The Bat Family Timeline and Ages (Post-Crisis and New Earth) with Sources
Tumblr media
Evidence
In Batman: Year One, Bruce is said to be 25 in the January he returns to Gotham. The 1976 DC Calendar puts Bruce's birthday on the 19th of February so Bruce is 26 during his first outing as Batman in April.
Marv Wolfman's Batman: Year Three (Batman vol. 1 #436) tells us that Dick Grayson's parents die in Bruce's third year. In Batman vol. 1 #441 (also by Wolfman) Tim says that Robin started appearing around 6 months after the death of the Flying Graysons. For Dick's age when he becomes Robin, see below.
Bruce joins the Justice League before Dick forms the Teen Titans. Both these teams form before Barbara Gordon becomes Batgirl at 16 (Batgirl: Year One).
Barbara and Dick are each other's dates to their high school prom and so are less than 2 years apart in age (Detective Comics vol. 1 #871).
I suspect Dick, who was an emancipated minor, graduated high school and started college a year early, which allows Dick and Barbara to have some time as the new Dynamic Duo, as we see in Batman Family.
Dick Grayson is 18 when he forms the New Teen Titans, all of whom are also teenagers (Nightwing vol. 2 #137 by Wolfman, who also created the New Teen Titans).
Dick Grayson is 19 when he becomes Nightwing (Batman vol. 1 # 416).
21 year-old Helena becomes Huntress (Huntress: Year One #1), and interacts with Batgirl, meaning that Barbara is not yet Oracle.
Jason dies at 15, 4 months before his 16th birthday (Batman Files). This is before the New Teen Titans' third year anniversary (New Titans #71), before any of the Titans turn 22 (Deathstroke vol. 1 Annual 1), 2 years after Dick becomes Nightwing and almost 10 years before Dick's parents are killed (Batman vol. 1 #436). Dick is hence 21 during these events and 11 when he became Robin.
I also kinda like Dick being 17 years younger than Bruce because that's also the age difference between Adam West and Burt Ward from the 60s TV series.
After these events, Tim Drake becomes Robin and is 13-14 (Batman vol. 1 #441 and Robin II #1)
Soon after, Stephanie Brown is 15 when she becomes Spoiler (Secret Origins 80-Page Giant).
Stephanie is still 15 when she realises that she is pregnant (Robin vol. 2 #59) and Tim is almost 15 during this time (Secret Origins 80-Page Giant).
Cassandra Cain is 17 when she comes to Gotham during this time (Batgirl vol. 1 #1), during No Man's Land which lasts one year.
Helena’s family were killed when she was 8 and during Batman/Huntress: Cry For Blood, Tim says the murders happened roughly 15 years ago, making her roughly 23 during this storyline.
Cass turns 18 in January (Batgirl vol. 1 #39), Tim Drake turns 16 (Robin vol. 2 #116), Jason would have turned 18 in August (Detective Comics vol. 1 #790), and Stephanie is 16 when she "dies" (Batman Allies Secret Files & Origin).
Personally I'd re-arrange Tim's 16th birthday to be the last of these events four events to accommodate him still being 17 late into the Batman: Reborn, see below.
Jason soon returns to Gotham as Red Hood, not long before Infinite Crisis, 52 and One Year Later.
Following the one year time skip, Dick says it's been almost 10 years since his misadventures with Metal Eddie and Liu as a 16-17 year old (Nightwing vol. 2 #133 by Wolfman), which makes sense because he would be 25 by my math.
Stephanie returns from her time as a medical volunteer in East Africa, finishes high school and begins university during Batman: Reborn. She'd turn 19 by the end of this year by my math, which is a typical age to be begin attending university (Gotham Underground and Batgirl vol. 3 #1).
Dick calls Damian Wayne a "10 year-old" before Stephanie attends university (Batman and Robin vol. 1 #2) and Steph still calls Damian a "10 year-old" while she's in her second semester (Batgirl vol. 3 #13 and Batgirl vol. 3 #17). He might have turned 11 before the reboot.
Batwoman: Elegy (Detective Comics #858), during the Batman: Reborn year, shows that Kate was 12 when she was kidnapped and saw her mother and sister killed. This incident is also said to happen "20 years ago”, making her 32 and hence 30-31 during her first appearance in 52/One Year Later.
Tim Drake is still 17 while Steph is in her second semester of her first year at university, and it's stated that he is meant to be in his senior year at high school (Batgirl vol. 3 #13, Red Robin #17 and Red Robin #25). It's possible he turns 18 before the reboot.
Mistakes I Made
Cassandra Cain is 21 in Year Eighteen.
The "Titans disbands" in Year Thirteen was definitely a year early but it's done.

Thanks for your reply. And, yeah, I definitely agree that Robin is first and foremost Dick’s legacy, and that he chose Damian as his Robin for important reasons that he expresses to Tim later. And, his blessings to both Jason and Tim previously were also extremely important. But, I was thinking about it more in terms of how the transition was handled. I know that Jason and Dick, despite popular belief, had a decent relationship when he was Robin, but Dick didn’t react well initially because he had been completely blindsided by the news, nor had he given his consent. I thought that Alfred was sort of repeating Bruce’s mistakes here, so Tim might have been blindsided by it as well (not that I think he would’ve given his consent either way at that point). You saying that it was a crisis decision on Alfred’s part puts it in perspective though, and it makes sense since Alfred’s generally more sensitive than Bruce. I do think, though, that seeing Damian in a Robin suit (with Alfred’s blessing) would have probably made Tim realise that there was a real possibility that Damian could be Robin.
[referencing this response on how the transition from Tim to Damian as Robin was handled]
I think two things can be true: Tim would be blindsided and hurt by Dick's decision to make Damian Robin regardless of the circumstances, but it was particularly tough for him given the situation that it occurred in (the issue you're talking about and I mostly discussed in my original response), and it was the obvious decision to make based on where all three of those characters were in their character arcs.
Tim during the BFTC/early Reborn era honestly needs to be viewed in the context of him clearly being ready to take the same steps Dick took at his age to become an independent vigilante but wanting to cling to Robin because it was the only sense of stability he had in an incredibly unstable period of his life. Tim had been operating semi-independently for years and had just spent the entirety of Battle for the Cowl telling Dick that if he wouldn't put on the cowl Tim would do it himself…and then he actually did put on the cowl to go fight Jason. It's not like Tim wasn't signaling that he had moved beyond Robin's role as Batman's non-independent protege.
And Dick could see that, especially since Tim had already been the Robin to his Batman once, back in Prodigal. He genuinely meant it when he called Tim his "equal" in Red Robin #1, and I think that's important to understand where both of them are coming from.
Ultimately Tim's problems with Robin "being taken away from him" were not Dick's problems, and Tim's hostility and hurt comes from a fundamentally different place than Dick's did. Dick voluntarily gave up being Robin to become Nightwing, and the rocky transition from Dick to Jason was less about the mantle and more about Dick's personal insecurity about his place in the family and Bruce giving Jason Robin without his permission. Tim's place in the family was very solid during BftC and his RR #1 freakout was mostly about the perception that Dick was taking away his sole source of mental/life stability and choosing Damian (a potential hostile) over Tim to watch his back and keep him alive.
Dick's issues were about insecurity in the face of a father apparently replacing him with a new son and a new partner in his absence. Tim's issues were about feeling unmoored in the face of yet another loved one dying, his civilian life going up in flames (again) and being pushed out of a tenuous stability back into instability, and the percieved lack of trust in his ability to properly fill the role he was already occupying.
So honestly I think Tim's feelings on that transition need to be viewed as an entirely separate thing from how well or poorly the transition itself was handled, because I genuinely believe that Tim's reaction only was what it canonically was due to the unique intersections of events going on in Tim's personal life. Dick could have (and should have) handled the transition with more delicacy, but Tim was always going to react badly because of how hard he had been leaning on the mask to give him a sense of normalcy and balance. That's not really something Dick or Damian (or Alfred) could control, even though the transition itself was rockier than it could have been on their ends and poorly handled out-of universe.

Tumblr media
You were carefully examining the walls that surrounded you, your hands touching the smooth yet harsh surface with intrigue. You tried your hardest to understand what was happening, just a few hours ago, you were in Arkaham Asylum, your home for some years, living the same routine day after day. The darkness surrounded you, cutting you away from photosynthesis, cutting away your life.
Your skin was pale and without life, the beautiful green that covered your skin was completely gone. You almost gave up if it wasn’t for Harley Quinn, who broke into that goddamned prison and destroy your captivity and help -dragged- you away from this hell. You couldn’t be more grateful for her. She helped you emerge from that darkness and as you fell to your knees, completely overwhelmed with the rawness that your adored babies gave you as a welcome didn’t even feel something exploded at your back.
You felt the pain and the blackness once again, but being reborn into this magnificent being, you were grateful that your body could adapt to any new situation. And when you woke up, completely confused and disoriented, you could feel the vibrations of something other that wasn’t your plants. This wasn’t your Earth. This Earth was colder and harsher. Your fingers could feel it as you dragged them across a few flowers you had found. They reacted to your touch, but it was colder. You huffed in annoyance at the insolence these plants were giving you.
The following moments were key, you needed to figure out how to escape whatever this new hell was, to feel the sun once again, but your disappointment was clear as the only way out you manage to find was through some unknown kilometers of water.
“Ma' perteneces waye'.” A voice startled you, making you turn to the source. Your eyes became wary and the need to protect yourself and the plants that surrounded you on this cave. “Núukik, máax teech teech?”
“You speak of a language unknown to myself.” You half-smiled. Admiring how his tan skin was glowing, despite how dark it was. “And yet, I could still feel the harshness of your words.”
“You are trespassing, stranger.” He said, his shoulders tense. “Who are you.” His spear was pointing at you but you just arch your brow, not really scared of his actions.
“Strange, I had thought my name was widely known by now even after Batman stopped my spores to help Gotham.” You played with the ends of your hair, finally convincing these plants to aid you if a battle was about to happened. “But if not, Dr. (Y/N) (L/N).” You held out your hand, the stranger’s dark eyes stared at the greenish tint on them. “Better known as Poison Ivy, pleasure.” You took a step forward.
You were loving this, his body was releasing a few pheromones that made you want to touch him.
His spear raised, pointing between your eyes, you couldn’t help but grin at the audacity. “Do not step closer.” He spat.
“I gave you my name, gorgeous.” You smiled, shrugging. “You should give me yours.”
The man stared at you for a moment. “You may call me Namor.”
You frowned at the name, trying to located inside of your memories, you were sure you knew how many of those stupid Justice Leagues were out there and even the villains, you knew them, but who was he?
“Pleasure but I cannot seem to remember you from Gotham City, perhaps you are from Metropolis?”
“I do not know what those places are…how did you manage to dive to the bottom of the ocean? How did you enter?” He pressed those questions.
“I’m sorry, did you just said bottom of the ocean?” you emphasized the last word, Namor nodded wordlessly. “You are telling me that somehow I ended up here…not only on the ocean but in the bottom of it?!” Before he could get a word in, you turned around, your hands raising a little, forcing all the flowers, vines and apparently seaweed get closer to you. “Explain.” You demanded and stayed quiet as these babies told you everything you needed to know.
Namor gently put down his spear, watching you in confusion as you apparently were talking to the plants. “Do you…understand them?” He asked in amazement.  You turned around and examined him but didn’t answer his question. He stared at you before offering you his hand. You stared at it. “I apologize for the rude welcoming…We had some unpleasant visitors who threatened the safety of my people.”
“Threatened?” You questioned him. “In what way?”
Namor closed his eyes and you could see how his mouth began twitching in frustration. “The surface-dwellers are trying hard to find us, find our resources to use them with greed.”
You stared at him. Your hand softly caressing one of the flowers. “I know, they attacked your people…they told me.” You softly said. “They even destroyed a few of your plants. I can feel their pain.”
Namor took a step closer, his hand touching the same flower as you. “You are welcome to stay as long as you don’t hurt my people.”
Tumblr media
With time you began noticing how his people became more accustom with you, some of the children even went as far as giving you a few of the plants their mothers cultivated underwater. But a part of yourself truly noticed how Namor warmed with your presence, often staying a bit with you when you ate or at night when you went to sleep.
Those actions became different when he began tracing the softness of your skin with his hands, often leaving you desired him each time.
But everything change when he came back after an expedition to the surface. He was angry and frustrated.
Your eyes watched his every move, you couldn’t help but to bit your lower lip as a few drops of water began trailing down his glorious, tanned chest. You were in heaven or well, you were practically somewhere down the fucking ocean. You didn’t care.
He was so warm beneath you, his hands molding perfectly against your tights, holding you in place but giving you the chance to do whatever you wanted to him, you smiled as you leaned down and kissed the corner of his mouth, Namor chasing yours when you didn’t give him a proper kiss. Your hands went to his hair, soft, wet, silky, perfection.
Namor sat down, his hands stroking your back until they reached your hips, moving them ‘til you were placed above his hardening cock. He could feel your arousal passing through the soft and delicate material of the dress he had given you. His hands skimmed over your hips, sliding down again towards the curve of your ass, pressing you against him once again, rolling your hips against his.
You began kissing alongside his jaw, stopping a few times to bit him gently making him grunt every time you did that, at every grunt he gave you, your cunt clenched with need. You became in love with his sounds, from the small hitches in his breath to the soft grunts and the occasional moan.
Namor’s hands quickly grabbed the bottom of your dress, tugging it upward. “My beautiful ivy.” He whispered against your breasts. “I want to see you, would you let me?”
You nodded wordlessly, quickly raising your hands, helping him take off your dress, you didn’t hesitate and his hungry gaze watched you, one of his fingers traced the softness of your skin.
“Beautiful.” He whispered, his hands gripping at your waist, flipping you easily so he could be on top, his lips traced your breast, your stomach, kissing it softly. “My beautiful, beautiful ivy, only mine.” His hands cup your breasts, sucking one of your nipples, rolling it between your lips.
“Namor…” You gasped, trying to push away the only piece of cloth that was covering him away from your eyes.
“No.” He whispered against your nipple, kissing it softly. “Call me in yakunaj.”
“In yakunak?” You moaned when he bit your nipple. “What does that mean?”
Namor chuckled as he scrambled off from you, making you groan in annoyance, trying to bring him back. He quickly stripped off his shorts, releasing his cock from its confinement, you couldn’t help but stare, it was long, thick and a few veins were pulsing from the thick base to the smooth head. You were so entranced by the sight of it that you didn’t even noticed the lopsided grin he was giving you.
He leaned forward, gripping your ankles, softly rubbing circles on them, he brought his lips to them, kissing them softly without breaking away your gaze, his lips moved towards your thighs but you didn’t stop him, anxious to know how far would he go. He nuzzled your thigh, working his way up your cunt. Your hand quickly went to his hair, as he kissed your skin. “My beautiful ivy like this?” He murmured closer to your cunt, his lips tickling it. “Would you let me taste you?”
You couldn’t help but muttered a quiet ‘dumb question’ and you felt him smile…And then he just opened his mouth on your cunt, licking your folds, slowly pushing his tongue inside you, his palms went under your hips, lifting you towards his hungry mouth, forcing your legs to spread open. He gently blow on your cunt, the cold air made you whimper. “You are making me insane.” He murmured against your clit before sucking on it.  “Sweet and only for my mouth to know.” Namor couldn’t help but groan at your taste before diving in once again like a starved man.
You closed your eyes when he began thrusting his thick fingers inside your cunt, waves of pleasure crashed over your body, specially when he sucked hard at your clit, humming with delight. You came, bucking against his mouth, he accepting it but refusing to separate from your cunt.
“In yakunaj…” You rasped breathlessly. “Too much.”
He kissed your clit one last time before making his way to your lips, you couldn’t help but moan at the taste of yourself on his mouth, his tongue fought for dominance and you let him win. He paused for a moment, his lips above yours as he muttered. “I want to do so many things with you, I want to make you cum until you beg me to fill you with my seed, until you beg me to never stop.”
You swallowed. “Yeah? You promise?”
Namor grinned. “I swear it on my name.” His hand positioned his cock at your entrance and with a swift motion, he was inside of you. He force himself to go slow, to enjoy it, to enjoy you. Your eyes were close, your teeth biting your lips, the most beautiful blush covering your face. But fuck, you were tight, so fucking tight as he began thrusting. Each stroke was breaking his concentration but then he was finally and completely inside you, his balls rubbing against you. Your cunt squeezing his length greedily. He loved it.
He held himself above you so he could indulge on your expressions, to watch you respond at his thrust, to greedily see how his cock thrusted inside of your body.
“My ivy.” He groaned, kneeling and forcing your hips over his thighs. “You are swallowing me so beautifully, your cunt is not letting me leave, so greedy for my seed that its squeezing me so perfectly.” He slowed down, rolling his hips. His hand grabbed yours and guide it towards where both of you were joined. “Feel it, feel how greedy your cunt is for me.”
You moaned, God, how can he be so dirty? “In yakunakj, yes…yes.”
Your walls began contracting around him, you back arched and force your hips higher, trying to take him deeper. His control finally snapped. Namor began pounding into you and you couldn’t help but clench your thighs around his hips as you came, but he didn’t stop, he continued and the sound of skin slapping made him almost completely mad.
“So good.” He threw his head back, his teeth baring as he kept pounding into you. “You squeeze me so perfectly, but is not enough, you can give me another one.”
He pulled you up, wrapping your legs around his waist and you cling against him as he began thrusting upwards, the hot friction made you clench around him quickly and he groaned, moving even faster with urgency, like his life depended on making you cum as much as he could. You clung tighter to him and he bit you, his teeth latching on your shoulder, marking you as his. Pleasure shattered you as you felt him swell inside, his hot cum filling you, your cunt milking every drop greedily.
Namor sank against you, squishing you but you didn’t complained. After a few moments he gently slid of your cunt, you couldn’t help but wince at the loss of it. He rolled to the side, his hands tugging you so you could laid on his chest.
You finally noticed how a few vines were covering most of his things but you didn’t care at the moment as his fingers began pushing back his cum inside of your body.
“I will burn the world with you.” You whispered against his chest, trying your hardest not to trembled with how his finger was moving inside of you. “If you accept me.”
Namor kissed your temple without saying anything, but you could safely say he wanted it, but at the moment, he let you rest. In his mind, already planning new ways to make you cum before planning anything against the surface-dwellers.

i keep watching the penguin episodes almost a week late cause im watching w my dad okay but. i liked ep 7. i have a lot of thoughts about it. way too many, perhaps, so they're under the cut.
the explosion sofia sets off underground obviously damages crownpoint —an already heavily damaged neighborhood. in her haste to get to oswald she doesn't care that she's hurting the everyday folk, or maybe it didn't even cross her mind; just like when, in her haste to get revenge on the falcones, she didn't even think of what she would do to gia: orphaned, spared by some miracle... the same miracle that seemed to have taken her family away.
but back to sophia & crownpoint. crownpoint & this side of the city, in general, was the first thing vic and oswald talked about; the first foundation of the bridge upon which they stand (continuing the metaphor, one might argue that vic's stutter and the feeling of fellow disability it may have sparked in oswald was the reason the bridge was approved for building in the first place). but it's been also source of conflict between francis and oswald: she needed to escape it, so he took her away somewhere better, now he needs to escape that better place and they're back at where they started. i believe that francis is having these regressions in time as a combination of her illness and being back in the bad part of town, likely triggering the possible pstd from burying her two sons. then victor had to come back home & finally face squid: now he can never truly go back. cause sure he's dealing drugs and helping oswald and doing his part, but those make him someone. killing squid, that he'll never shake off. even if it does not get easier. vic is back where he was a mere months ago but irrevocably changed; this place has seen him born and then reborn.
so we have these three characters, on one side, intrinsically linked to crownpoint and what it stands for: poverty, helplessness, misery (even if life can be happy there: vic was happy, francis & oswald were happy) that they desperately try to live behind. they want a good life, the better life, and no one will give it to them, so they'll take it. even if it means standing against the families, who don't even know their names.
and that's why sofia does what she does. brings harm to harmless people, innocent people who (as we've seen in previous episodes) have already lost it all. and eva was right. sofia was born privileged. she will never understand the streets life. yes, that privilege didn't save her, didn't soothe her suffering one bit, but her mansion wasn't flooded, she doesn't know how it feels like to walk into a room and to know no one knows your name —this is both a blessing and a curse. the last ten years of sofia's life were torture in every sense of the word; but before then she didn't know what it was to truly fight for your life, your dignity, to stand your ground. and sofia, for all her rightful demands that people understand and see what was done to her —the injustice, the betrayal, the horror, the belittling, the pain, the loss of everything she ever had or held dear— has no qualms or worries about hurting others. because for her there is only revenge.
and last thing, i don't know if it was intentional, but the way oswald emerges from the explosion, sees all the damage, with his ears blocked and then suddenly unblocked, hearing all the confusion and chaos and suffering of people who have little to none to lose (because it already was), really reminded me of the moment in batman 2022 when the bombs go off and the flood begins. but i haven't seen the move in a while so i could be wrong. even so, it's the same. the struggle between the powerful, these two forces of nature almost, never ends well for the common folk. the blows they deal hit each other, sure, but it's always the defenseless who end up soaked in the aftermath.

Do you have fic recs by any chance? You really seem to have a lot of comics knowledge so I trust that you know what’s accurate to the source material and what’s not :)
you know I've gotten a few asks about this and I never quite manage to answer them, because I'm always convinced that I will somehow end up with a perfect and complete rec list if only I wait to reply just a little longer.
SO I'm gonna try cutting myself off at the head this time, and not giving you a prefect list by any means, but at least giving you an answer:
Here is a collection that I'm slowly forming for fics that really feel like they're actually based off comics. It is currently very small and people are welcome to bookmark to it if they find other very comics-based fics, but it's a start.
And a couple random recs as I scroll through my personal bookmarks:
Redrawing the Lines (11k) is fantastic Batman Reborn era Dick & Tim & Damian fic, and it continues as a series after.
also the second before the other shoe drops (8k) about the same trio. AU where Damian makes a murder attempt in a subtler way--but most important, is not demonized by a narrative that instead gives everyone a fair shake.
will we ever get to the other side? (5k) Dick & Tim in a very specific era where Dick's life is falling apart and filled with trauma, and Tim has just been hit with a huge smack of grief and also trauma, and neither is at their best but they're trying.
Everything by @silverwhittlingknife is ideal Dick & Tim content, and all deeply rooted in comics. I will call out:
The Return (11k), which is Dick's pov of Tim coming back to Gotham after Brucequest
only you will have stars that can laugh (9k) which is sad and loney but also sweet on Christmas
Red Letter Day (42k, wip) in which god Dick is trying his fucking best to hold it together okay. (aka everyone is kind of prickly, Dick is stressed, there's a Mysterious Wednesday of unclear importance, and I love them sm)
@flybynightwing has equally comics-based and also absolutely fascinating and compelling fics. I'll call out:
How Far Love Goes (99k) a case fic that draws in everyone in the bat family, with a tilt towards Dick (although the Steph is also fantastic), and turns into a reflection on Bruce as a parent.
goal-oriented mindset (5k) Catalina's pov, meeting Dick again well after everything went down. Subject may not be for you, but I find it SO interesting and roll it around and around in my head. (And it is of the very very rare selection of actually comics-based fics about that arc.)
It's a Wonderful Earth-218 (7k). A thoroughly depressed Dick goes to a world where he was never born, it's a wonderful life-style.
(And carrying on with various authors again:)
Hate and Love are Two Sides of the Same Coin (5k + 13k sequel) every member of his family is forced to say what they like least about Dick. The fic makes no secret of its thoroughly contrived premise and doesn't particularly care to justify it either, but still comes out with great characterization and relationship reflections.
Mikey Dies At The End (4k), outsider pov centered around Jason as the Red Hood, which is so very confident in its characterization of him and has zero considerations given to fanon and it's an excellent read.
A Meditation on Railroading (24k), a Tim-centric fic that deals heavily with his relationship with his dad. This one is not really canon at all, but it is good, and its version of the relationship is compelling.
Young Justice Visit the Suez Canal (3k) look this one is pure 90s-style Young Justice humor. We're here for a good time.
Aaand I know there are many more good fics, but I have run out of steam and I am trying so so hard to remember that some answer is better than no answer. Though I am very sorry to all my beloved writers & mutuals who have written excellent comics fic.
Anyway final tip is when you find an author who knows what they're talking about, go through all their fics, and then go through all their bookmarks.

Yearning || Jason T.
Summary; Jason Todd and his longing for someone to hold him, Bruce who is trying to be a good dad comes to the rescue.
Warning/tags: angst; under the redhood arc spoiler; OOC Jason Todd; Jason and his father issues. THIS IS NOT BRUCE X JASON. hurt/comfort; Bruce being a father to Jason.
Word count: 200-400 words.
a/n: not proofread, first fic in tumblr... i apologize for some grammars error, enjoy reading!
Tumblr media
Gotham is a cold and lonely place that Jason had grown accustomed to, he has to. The cold of the rain covers his body as trails of blood from the gunshot wound on his stomach drops to the ground, seeping to his suit as it is drenched with sweat and blood. His breath shallow as he drag his feet to the source of light in the end of the alleyway that is becoming blurry.
He had been beaten, wounded, trying to crawl out from this hell hole that he'd been throwing fist to several goons that had littered the place.
Ever since his death, ever since he was abandoned, comes the birth of a cold-blooded criminal. He was reborn as the Redhood.
The laughter that crawls under his skin, struck by the pain of the cold steel of a crowbar, left alone to endure. If only he had listened to Bruce, would things be much different? all he wanted was to see the person who gave birth to him.
He had dug out of the dirt with his bare hands, gasping out for air in the darkness of the coffin, the fear that he was alone overtook his sense of pain. His helpless scream for help, remained deaf to anyone.
In the back of his head, perhaps he should've never look after him to get his revenge. He should've never forced a gun to Joker in front of his arch-nemesis. Batman, his mentor, the only person he ever had when he was a robin.
In the end he was person that was not worth to avenge for, not worthy enough to be remembered, perhaps he meant nothing for the person who meant so much to him. At least it's what had been feeling, perhaps for his flaws, he had to remain as a man full of bitterness and anger, punished due to his own self. He was convinced that he would never be able to be loved.
And he learned the world is bitter, had always been bitter and cold. Convincing his heart and mind, to be ruthless, he is free from his past.
He is full of anger and sadness, the hatred of the man that left him, he wondered why he would've even bothered to take him? give him hope that would only crush him?
He'd find himself awake on nights he'd find trembling on his bed, hugging himself as he cried, he felt weak but there was no one to see him fall apart to the boy he used to be.
No longer feeling the rain that fell on his skin, his eye flutters open to the ceiling he had never thought to see again. His eyes squint instictively due to the moonlight that shines on his face, the room was dark and the moon is the source of light. Moving his head, he looked around to see he was lying on a bed, wrapped in bandages. The room he's in were too familliar, he recognizes the place.
And there was Bruce, arms crossed as he sits on a wooden chair right beside the bed. Jason eyes picks up the worried look on him, seemingly relieved that he had woken up from his sleep. Jason gave him the bitter look and Bruce's face remained cold, not that he could help.
Soon, even with the awkward silences or the glares they shared, in the end Jason was in his arms once again, held as if he would break just like those other nights he had spent alone.
Bruce remained silent, holding his son who he had never meant to let go, who he had convinced that he was not worth to fight for and his heart ache at the feeling of Jason's warm body. After the last time he had held him, his body was cold and lifeless.
And that night, Jason eyes swelled with tears that soon he can't seem to hold, his arm holding dearly to his father who had abandoned him.
Hoping that he would be seen again.

Back before the world decided to fall apart and become this one, I was required to get chipped and registered with the government to get a legal identity, since I'm not from this world originally. Technically, that registration should not exist anymore.
Somehow, I still am getting e-mails for government jobs. They even still have my name and my last known residence. A lot of the jobs involve communing with the deceased or predicting future events (as I listed my abilities as a scryer), but a disturbing number now involves the tracking and unmasking of vigilantes. Like the infamous Batman or Static or these new-wave vigilantes around. Some of them have bounties in the hundreds of millions; I'd be set in a life-time in an instant.
If my powers aren't the way they were, I'd be sorely tempted to take those cases on. It wouldn't be that hard. Just get into the same place as them and make a connection with Karma. Then, track that connection to that source.
Problem is that connection. By making that connection, your fates are now intertwined, for better or for worse. The last time I indulged in my curiosity like that involved the whole Nameless Cult business with my employer, her sister, and her girlfriend. Though I guess I wouldn't have met Sasha if it weren't for that - or survived what happened afterwards.
I could've done without the whole world dying and being reborn anew though.
And my employer and these people are relatively unknown in the grand scheme of things - I mean, my employer's girlfriend is like a famous multi-millionaire girl now, but she wasn't like that before in the past life.
In any case, I don't particularly want the chaos in my life that the other vigilantes worth millions in bounty would bring to me.

Batman Vol 1 #411
No cuz I think about “I’ll kill you. Kill you” at least once a week I’m being serious.
Just. The palpable rage. How he was only a kid but willing to kill. The way he loved Willis so much he wanted to avenge him. Honestly reminds me of the UtRH movie where he tells Bruce that if he had been the one to die then Jason would have killed the Joker to avenge him.
It’s just… he was so angry and heartbroken that his father had been taken from him that it makes me want to cry.

Gotham's Blue-Eyed Children

"Got'am," I echoed weakly.
Oh no no no no. Nope. No. No.
I was not reborn in a city of psychos where a goddamn gang of bat and bird furries fight crime at night. Nope. I wasn’t placed in a world with metas and destruction around every corner.
The denial was real.

Inglourious Basterds
youtube
Tumblr media
I am jumping out of order with the third Quentin Tarantino film I am covering here is not QT’s third film, Jackie Brown, but instead for his 2009 alternate take on World War II, Inglourious Basterds (trailer). Click or press here for my article on Reservoir Dogs, and click or press here for my entry on Pulp Fiction. I have owned the BluRay since it first released well over a decade ago, and it is a shame yet another QT gem has sat in my backlog for so long. This takes place in occupied France with a riveting opening scene where German Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) conducts an interview with a local dairy farmer which eventually leads to questioning about missing Jews. This being a QT film, the dialog is intentionally drawn out, with Hans pausing the interview for a refreshing glass of milk, and digressing on other tangents before eventually getting to the burning question. Once again, QT absolutely nails the art of conversation like very few of his peers can. Every subtle body language flinch and pivot throughout their verbal exchange is not wasted, and it ultimately pays off with a unforgettable impact to close the scene. If it was almost any other filmmaker, my tolerance would have surely been tested, but there is something to QT’s scripts that without fail have me 100% invested in their surplus of verbiage as much as a climactic action scene in the latest summer blockbuster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Be prepared for some vintage-QT dialog-heavy scenes...I wouldn't want it any other way from him! This being a WWII film, one would think it would be safe to presume there is a fair amount of military combat scenes. While there is a significant body count by the end of the film, the firefights are not of the typical Hollywood WWII fare, so do not expect any all-out tanks, war planes, and massive artillery skirmishes. Most of the action that transpires here involves a team of Jewish American soldiers headed up by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt). After the absurd fallout from their latest mission in a basement tavern, they receive intel from undercover operative Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) that Nazi leadership including Hitler (Martin Wuttke) himself will be at the grand opening of the latest military propaganda film, Nation’s Pride.
Tumblr media
The theater owner where Nation’s Pride will be premiering, Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), has an intriguing arc on how she is roped into debuting the film at her cinema which is caused by the relentless intimate pursuit of German soldier, Frederick Zoller (Daniel Brühl). Without giving too much away, Shosanna has her own agenda too, and everything builds up splendidly to the big premiere night of Nation’s Pride. I vividly remember going into the theater not clued into the ending which I will not spoil here, and I was instantly stunned at the direction QT went for the final act. There is nearly an hour and a half of bonus material on the BluRay. The standout bonus is a half hour interview with Brad Pitt and QT, conducted by Elvis Mitchell with some highlights of their conversation being how energetic the overall shoot was, and what it was like premiering the film in Germany. Other extra features worth checking out is the full six minute cut of Nation’s Pride, a quick look back with interviews of the cast and crew from the original 1978 Inglorious Bastards, and a pair of interviews with Rod Taylor who has some fun behind-the-scenes stories with QT on how the two have the utmost respect for each other.
Tumblr media
Inglourious Basterds did not disappoint with a highly entertaining second viewing where nearly the entire ensemble cast excelled in their performances! For a film that is two and a half hours long, it proved to be a swift viewing after being so engrossed with all the aforementioned dialog-dense scenes. I cannot fairly rank this among QT’s movies as I nearly love them all equally, but it goes without saying if you have made it this far then you know I am giving this the highest of recommendations! It’s 1985 and there is a Crisis On Infinite Earths.
It’s April the 18th 1938, and Siegel and Shuster don’t yet realise what they will lose as a result of giving the world a hero.
It’s February 2020 and I’m reading the conclusion of a 12 issue series that has taken just over two years to reach the finish line.
It’s 1987 and the first collected volume of Watchmen appears, an event that will ultimately see Alan Moore disavow his creation and any associated spin-offs or incarnations in other media.
It’s 34 years since Moore dedicated an issue to Manhattan’s perception of time, and the device feels neither fresh nor necessary here. Like the adoption of Rorschach’s syntax by Reggie, it seems a hollow echo of the source, an unnecessary cover of a classic song just to show the band knows the greats.
It’s two days before I read the comic, and a Twitter thread discusses how Pax Americana and Pete Cannon, Thunderbolt both understand, engage and seek to transcend the sacred Gibbons and Moore text, building on what came before rather than just echoing it. It positions Doomsday Clock at the opposite end of the scale, lacking a true understanding of the text and being shackled by it, trapped in the shadows of a better work. It doesn’t seem an unfair assessment.
It’s December 18th, 2019, and this book hits the stands, apparently promising an eternity of Crises on as many earths as it sees fit, forever and ever and ever amen.
It is now, and I don’t disagree with the central thesis here that Superman is central to everything that makes the DCU what it is (either within the fiction of the DCU or in terms of the company that screwed over Siegel and Shuster), that he makes each universe better for being there, that he inspires his reality to be heroic and that he can be reborn for every age to keep inspiring, in the hope that one day reality will finally catch up with what he represents. I feel happy to see the Legion, to see their Superboy connection acknowledged (even though I never cared for Superboy, I do appreciate his importance to the Legion), but wonder what the point was of all the Legion foreshadowing if they amount to a quick cameo and proof that Clark remembers things once erased from history.
Flight rings in the 21st century and Imra in Arkham seem to have had very little significance in the end. Which I suppose is representative of the series as a whole- hyped extensively (it is May the 25th, 2016. Batman finds the Comedian’s bloodstained badge in the Batcave. Hype builds. It is April 2017. Batman and the Flash investigate the button. Nothing much comes of it. Later that year, Doomsday Clock 1 is released, promotion indicates it is a significant event in the DCU. It is 2020 and I can’t really remember the details of any of this stuff and remain unconvinced of any great impact, whether on the fictional universe or the medium), but seems to end with little more than the promise of ever more events and reboots, as though hype is all there is. Rather than engaging with the medium, challenging it or changing it, it just reiterates its past and promises further reiterations of the same old things, well beyond the lifetimes of current readers.
I am sure there are good things here- it looks good, it seems to have been something Johns was passionate about- but I struggle to find anything that I have enjoyed in the series, beyond moments of fan service style recognition. Much of this is due to its failure to be in any way representative of Watchmen- to willfully take on a work that (like it or not) towers over much of the superhero genre suggests great hubris. To do so in a way that suggests, at least to me, that you didn’t really get what it was about, is the very downfall that the Greeks warned hubris would lead to.
Moore looked at time: aging, the loss of innocence, the change of public opinion and trends, the struggle to make sense of your place in a world where things are not constant- the clock ticking down was as much the one on your wrist as the one maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (it is 2020 and the hand is at 100 seconds to midnight), because time is against us all. Heroes must grow up, retire, die. Vigilantes cannot fight the same fight forever, because society changes and what was once ‘un-American’ now is not, and what was once a scientific endeavour that ended a World War is now the Sword of Damocles hanging over all our heads. The sins that were once justified as being in the interests of peace are seen as the cold manipulations of powerful men willing to sacrifice innocent lives in the interests of little more than their own ego. There are no true absolutes in Watchmen.
Doomsday Clock promises an infinity of crises, resetting things to better suit the age, but still the same- Superman as the promise of justice, the same heroes fighting the same evils. Maybe one day he will be black, or female, or something once unimaginable to past readers stuck in their particular period, but that change is superficial at best, everything else is a form of recycling, just as the syntax of Rorschach, the time travel of Jon and the grid layout of Gibbons are reused throughout.
It feels like everything Moore would be against, like the logical and heartbreaking result of losing your creation to a corporation. Whether you are Superman or Rorschach, you are now trapped in the infinite loop of crises, never really having to face up to the ticking of the clock, taking comfort in the fact that doomsday will only bring you back to the start, safe in your role forevermore, archetypes that will never really have to change or truly face change.
It is 1986, and Watchmen is heralded as a sign of a new maturity in superhero comics, an indicator of new life in a genre (rightly or wrongly) perceived as childish and lacking in wider appeal, caught up in its own continuity and lacking both moral and narrative complexity.
It is 2019 and we are promised a future filled with the same characters being reborn time and again, the past always being brought back, rather than the past giving way to the present, and the present surrendering itself to the future. Here, the Doomsday Clock cannot be allowed to reach midnight, because what (or who?) the book represents fears what may come with a new day, fears change, fears not belonging in the world the way it once did. Everything Moore wanted to leave behind to seek new forms and stories is determined to hold the medium in a frozen moment of perpetual Rebirth.
From Doomsday Clock 12, by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson & Rob Leigh
