Okay I have only seen like 3/4 of TUA season 1. Once Luther got sad and drunk my 2nd hand embarrassment killed me.
Please please please, I give you permission to be specific about how they fucked it up so bad. Cause I know there was time travel bs and then alt universe stuff? But I’m so curious. Please I give you permission.
spolier alert for the umbrella academy series and comics
more than anything the umbrella academy is about the siblings relationships, who they are as people, and the roles theyve been put in by their abusive adoptive father
so from season 1 reckoning with their childhood stuff now that their abusive father is dead to season 2 where you finally see them building lives of their own unburdened by the shadow of their father until...
i love season 2 but really thats where it started to go off the rails when they put reggie back into the story (i wont pretend to know where the comics are going whether their father was going to return in the 4th volume, or that the comics are perfect)
the way the comics focused on the secrets and experiments and whatever reggie was up to coming to light after his death was more interesting especially the reveal that there was another group of super powered heroes hidden away somewhere was devastating like the implications are crazy
there was no alternate universe bullshit in the comics (at least not yet and i pray there isnt) and it just feels like they were going with the multiverse trend thats been popular in recent years i mean they already had time travel thing
season 3 is probably ranked 2nd as the worst season of the four and while it took from the original comics there were also major departures like harlan and his whole thing
i honestly dont want to be that guy that goes on about how they should have been faithful to the source material but the more they strayed from the comics the worse it got season 4 is a testament
they had 4 episodes less to wrap things up so i could understand that they missed a bunch of emotional consequences from what happened the last season (as if they didnt matter but come on man Luther's wife was got disappeared) but then it spent most of the penultimate episode on this kind of gross romance plot that no one asked for between Five and Diego's (his brother) wife Lila
along with the feeling that the writers arent making decisions that made sense with the characters that was the straw that broke the camels back for most fans
this season seemed to forget about what the characters are actually like fundamentally and even reverted characters back to their old self like klaus because i guess they didnt know what to do with him otherwise
it had viktor still yearning for, then finally getting the approval of his father which is a little hollow because he met him with powers so ofc he doesnt think you're useless anymore viktor and anyway you dont need his approval like wasnt this addressed in prior seasons
so yeah the final season ended by redeeming their abuser and having them die to save the world because they were never supposed to be born and their birth doomed the timelines to always end with the world ending because they were born what an absolutely fucked up way to end a story about the effects of abuse

Why don't you like the sea devil design from Legend of the Sea Devils? It looks just like the originals
Unfortunately it's probably my least favorite nuwho imagining of a classic monster, mostly because a lot of it's flaws don't feel like intentional art direction but just a failure to get what the classic one is going for. I think the original (right) was clearly working off of concept art that was referencing animals very closely to attempt to create a natural looking design (as was the case with many of the pertwee era designs), whereas the newer one (left) seems to be working to replicate the original as closely as possible without quite understanding the anatomy or considering how to better realize it with the resources of modern fx:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this original is a much more thoughtful creature design in general - I think the eyes look more like a real sea animal, I think the lines in the face look nicer when they're much more subtle, the lower beak is a little narrower which I think looks better. look at, for instance, how comparatively natural the bone structure of it's frill and the slope of the head is.
Tumblr media
and you know on top of that I just don't really want to see a 1:1 recreation of the original, even if it had been perfectly replicated; I would really hope the show would take the original design and create a new version of it with modern, more versatile fx. Oh well. (also: as I mentioned earlier, I just flatly don't think it's good looking or even workable fx. There was some sort of public falling out with the big established studio that had been doing practical fx work for the show since 2005, and they brought in a new, much younger studio to do the final season. I absolutely respect their work as artists but unfortunately, I don't really gel with their style and I think that their relative lack of experience - iirc this was their first job - shows with all of their creatures to some degree. It's especially notable here as, to my knowledge, they were working on bad crunch time and ultimately weren't able to get the sea devil head to function as intended. So, you know.)

I do think that it's pretty heavily implied to a degree that a lot of Gil's loud and hyperaggressive personality is something of a front and that beneath the performance he's much more internalised and rational than a lot of people/the fandom give him credit for. He's stated to be highly intelligent, have an interest and skill in music, is serious about study and education, and keeps to particular personal regimes that require a great deal of discipline and focus. Like, he's still a prideful, arrogant brute of a man but I do think Hima has been working to try and undo/soft-retcon some of that early characterisation tbh

Demon!Edwin Au
Me and a pal have been throwing this idea around for a little bit and I'm obsessed so here's a Demon!Edwin AU:
Edwin still crawls out of hell around the same time Charles is dying, but really wasn't expecting to find a very much still living human
So, as to not scare him to bad (the guy's dying, and Edwin certainly isn't a cruel demon), Edwin takes human form
He's... seen those enough to get it right...right?
So Charles, in his dying moments, meets Edwin. It's just that his limbs are a little too long, his joints twist just a bit too far, eyes just a little too lifeless
Oh, and he looks like he's from the early 1900s. So Edwin lies and says his a ghost- which Charles believes, until he's a ghost himself.
In which Charles figures that Edwin definitely isn't a human, but it's not like he's doing any harm, is he?
At first, Edwin doesn't particularly care for this human- he's just another one off to his afterlife, and Edwin is far more concerned with getting used to this new body.
But this human is...kind of charming, actually. and when he decides to stay with Edwin? Well, Edwin has 30 years to fully figure out his human/ghost persona.
Onto more general stuff:
Edwin doesn't particularly care about mortal life- human beings are like little ants to him, they live, they die and go to their afterlife.
But to Charles? Other people, especially helping them, is important to him- and Charles is important to Edwin.
So Edwin tries. They form the Dead Boy Detectives, and the plot of the show moves on!
That 'We didn't matter. Him and I' scene is mainly about Charles, but he slots himself in there to not only because it somewhat reflects how demons treat each other in hell, but because Edwin is extremely distraught about how anyone could treat Charles the way most people in Charles' life did.
Overall, Edwin is very bad at being a demon, but only a little bad about being a human ghost.

I was thinking about how similar Ogata and his father ended up being, but I realized he takes so much from his mother too. Ogata is the worst of both his father and mother.
The son of a wildcat is a wildcat as well. Tome was a character who wasn't very developed because it wasn't necessary. But you do know she was a geisha, someone who's job revolved around giving a performance others would enjoy. But she ends up giving all of her love to Koujirou, while he abandoned her and his son. She remained loving him though in a constant state of yearning, lying to herself and ignoring anyone else for the sake of living in a delusional world where he lived her. It meant her son was raised in an emotionally empty environment. It meant her son grew up without a reference for love, only her deluded obsession. But Ogata has that same yearning, and the same delusional world they made up to cope with the fact they were unloved and ignoring anyone who said otherwise. They both ended up absolutely lost to the true world. But when Ogata actually received love, it broke the illusion he'd created about the existence of love so he destroyed it. It is a push pull to love, this being one side and the other that refuses love seeming a lot like his father.
Koujirou received unconditional love from Tome, but of course it meant nothing to him. All that seemed to matter to him was his glory. He comes from a long line of military men, a line Ogata also comes from. Ogata would become like the man his mother loved, and the brother everyone loved, and he'd prove they weren't so much better then him. He tried to become leader of the 7th, therefore following in his father's footsteps and ambition. Ambition being very important in this side as it doesn't seem to be able to coexist with love with these two. Koujirou doesn't really seem to care about his legitimate son, but less his mistress and her child. He only cared for his glory, was willing to send his only son to the front lines fresh out of military college because what an honor it is to be a flag bearer. And how good it would look for Koujirou. Yuusaku absolutely ate this up but that's for a different ramble. Even when his wife tried everything in her power to get Yuusaku to not go to war he made sure his son fought. The fields Yuusaku died in were the same fields Koujirou ordered men under his command on attacks with very high mortality for no reason other than glory in a full frontal assault actually working. Ogata shows the same kind of unapologetic ambition, and in hurting people who love them. He shows it with Yuusaku and later Asirpa in more personal ways. Using people to get what he wants only to abandon and hurt them is a behavior that his father also showed, specifically with Tome. This all leads to similar ends though.
I see people bring up how he died poisoned, cut up, and finally a bullet from his rifle to the head, and how each represents a different family member and how he killed them. But I'm specifically thinking about how both him and his father committed suicide. I mean Koujirou actually didn't but everyone though he did. People thought the guilt of the deaths he had ordered, including his son, was to much for him and he committed. Of course it was actually staged, and Ogata killed him. But that was what made the most sense, why wouldn't a father feel guilty for that? Koujirou didn't feel guilty for his son's death, at least not enough to actually show it or krill himself. Ogata actually did suicide, and he did it because he actually did feel guilty, specifically for Yuusaku. The cover he used for his father's death was what actually made him take himself out. Ogata was different in that he did feel guilty, Koujirou did not.
At the end of the day they both his parents and himself died alone. Ogata took down his entire family and their memories down with him. It was all useless and that makes me wanna blow up.

three way make out session with obanai and mitsuri. muffling their soft moans with your lips. watching their tongues swirl together whilst their eyes are fixated on you. they’re greedy, pulling away from one another only to advance their lips on yours. and if you tug their heads back by the hair before your lips touch theirs they both whine, green and heterochromatic eyes all glossy and pitiful.

got any tips for drawing backgrounds/environments? yours are just utterly stellar
hello and thankyou for the ask!! and for the kind words!!!
truth be told—i, myself, don't much know what i'm doing when it comes to. anything art related. my process involves a lot of flailing and nebulous feelings of what to do.
in addition, for me, my character art actually came after my work with scenery, so advice may be wonky as a result! this is simply what i have found for my own style.
for backgrounds of my style i have found:
focusing on shapes is good!! just like closer-up artworks, it's good to focus on silhouettes and general impressions. getting some nice shapes into the background, without adding much detail, can go a long way (this goes for objects, landscapes, lighting, what-have-you)
things that are in the background (or, generally, out of focus) tend to look lower in contrast. i will even fade some of mine into neutral colours so that the objects in the foreground/the objects of focus stand out more. values are important for separation!
it's helpful to keep in mind how different colours/lightings may affect one another (reflection and whatnot), too! all of my pieces tend to use quite limited palettes partly for this reason. colours from the background will find their ways onto your subject and vice-versa. that is not to say that background colours and subject colours cannot be different—contrast is good!! cohesion is also important, however.

he still has his tonsils. by the way if you even care
#sorry this is fucking UNINTELLIGIBLE but unfortunately i’m still on my bullshit about dr. daddyissues. yeah it’s gonna be all month#i am rotating episode 2.8 ‘the mistake’ in my head at breakneck speed. i am gnawing on it i want to swallow it#oh he’s such a lying liar who lies. charming little bastard. would rather die/lose his license than express one wholly unaffected emotion#‘he thinks not giving a crap makes him like house. like it’s something to aspire to’ quick question HOW serious do the daddy issues have to#be before you start latching on to fucking GREGORY HOUSE as a paternal figure and role model. really#even cameron is not down this bad. even WILSON is not down this bad.#the daddy issues of it all are very understandable though because even setting aside whatever went down back in childhood that shit his#father did to him in seasons 1-2 is SO messed up. jesus#imagine traveling all the way across the world to the hospital your son works in for a consult which confirms what you already knew: you’re#going to die of cancer in like 2 months. making a whole point out of stopping by to visit your son. not telling him what’s going on.#letting him spend a whole episode’s worth of time gradually coming to terms with his complicated feelings towards you (complicated on#account of a whole childhood of objectively awful parenting). the kid finally is able to try reaching back out to you. after YOU initiated#the contact in the first place. how do you react? well obviously by telling him ‘oh sorry i actually have to get in a taxi right now’ and#fucking back off to the other side of the world without giving him a chance to actually talk to you at all and resolve any of the emotions#you just dredged up. oh by the way you still haven’t fucking told him you’re about to die and in fact actively mislead him into thinking#he’s going to have the chance to try meeting with you again next time he visits your home country.#especially fucked up given that the whole reason it DID take your son so long to come around THIS time is that he feels like every time#he’s tried reaching out to you in the past you’ve just disappointed him by refusing to put in the effort to meet him there.#And Now Here We Are Again.#rowan what the FUCK is wrong with you. i want to dig you up and kill you again#house md#robert chase#caseyposting
