Thoughts on the shiny dratini line?

(No Neopet review requests right now, so I'll do another of these.)

Dratini's shiny is a pretty straightforward 1:1 color swap, but they did choose a good color for it that's both nice to look at and high-contrast. Pink/blue swaps almost always work for the same reason red/blue swaps work, as pink's just a lighter version of red.

Dragonair is kept consistent with Dratini, though it mixes things up by making the orbs a yellowish orange. Generally speaking I like when the colors remain consistent with the original palette, which would make the orbs a darker pink in this case, but they aren't too bothersome as they at least compliment the pink nicely.

I see a lot of people complaining that Dragonite's shiny should have been pink as well, but to be fair, it never kept the same palette as the rest of the line to begin with. Sure, I would've loved it if Dragonite was blue by default and had a pink shiny like the rest of the line, but seeing as that's not the case I think it's fine for it to switch.

However, while Dragonite's shiny is very distinct relative to the original palette, I don't love the colors themselves. It retains the cream-colored underbelly but lost the orange that complimented it, and the particular shade of green they picked feels dark. I would've at least gone for more of a seafoam color, if we're going that route:

Red was also a poor choice for the wings for the same reason; it's too dark and makes the palette appear muddied. Given the relatively dark base, a peach or a light orange might've worked and would have complimented the underbelly more.

Angel gets into Heaven and Husk doesn't. When the seraphims come to pick him up, he can't leave. Not when someone is still stuck here.

Husk smiles at Angel with tears in his eyes. Knowing that this might be the last time they ever see each other. Angel might be free, but Husk isn't. Even if he was, he'd still have a long way to go to redemption. Angel was always going to be the first to leave.

They knew that, but it didn't make this any better.

"Go," he says with a strong voice. "You've earned it."

Earning it means nothing when his biggest support has to stay here. "I can't. Not without you."

Husk tries to laugh like it's all a joke, but it just comes out sad. "If you don't, you might never get another chance."

"I don't care. We'll find a way to go together if we can. Heaven will be shit without you there with me."

"No, it won't. Heaven will be all that it's chalked up to be. And you won't be missing anything, cause you won't remember me."

"You say that like it makes it better." A lump forms in Angel's throat, threatening to make him sob. "I'd rather stay a million years in Hell than a day in Heaven if that means I can still be with you."

Husk takes Angel's hands, gripping them tight. "You don't mean that."

"Yes, I do. How can I leave when the one good thing that ever happened to me is standing right in front of me?"

For a second, Angel thinks that he might have gotten through. Broken Husk's strength to say no. Husk pulls Angel into a hug. holding him close like it's the last time. It can't be. It won't. Angel isn't leaving this.

"I love you, Angel," Husk whispers. "But I could never forgive myself if I'd let you miss the thing you've been working so hard for."

Before he realizes it, Husk pushes Angel away from him. Right into the portal. Angel tries to regain his balance, his third set of arms spawning to try and grab at something, anything.

"Husk, no," Angel yells as he falls through the portal. It closes after him.

Suddenly, Angel's mind goes blank.

I love exploring new ships bc it gives me more perspectives on the characters and I get to see how different kinds of love change them as a person. So.

Hey :) I've only been in the fandom a few months and I mean it when I say I haven't read much Merlin fanfic (I've spent way more time here on tumblr than on AO3).

But since you asked me, personally my recommendation for a starter Merwenthur fic would be Choose and Choose and Choose by fleete.

I think it's the fic that got me actually interested in this ship in the first place, and also probably the only longish Merwenthur fic I've read (though it's only about 11k word).

You might have read it already, because it's the one Merwenthur fic I keep recommending – in which case you can skip the next few paragraphs (sorry). But I'll put another couple of links at the end if you want to check out more stuff.

fleete's fic is about the three of them getting together, and the "triggering event" is Gwen jokingly confessing to Arthur how she kissed Merlin after he almost died from drinking poison that one time. And Arthur has... an interesting reaction to that revelation.

You know when you read a fic and it just makes something click for you? This fic did so for me, and it just happens to tick many of my boxes in terms of tropes, too.

I love the characterisation; the three of them didn't feel too OOC even when they were doing things they never would in canon.

I liked the slight awkwardness around sex of Arthur and Gwen, because they're medieval 20-somethings who only recently lost their virginity to each other, and I found it realistic and also kind of endearing. I liked the tenderness and the vulnerability of it.

I liked the dynamic of the whole triad, but especially between Gwen and Merlin because in this fic it feels like their S1 friendship again and it's clear that they care about each other a lot, and in some Merwenthur I've read their relationship feels a bit like an afterthought at times, coming second to Merlin’s relationship with Arthur, or Arthur’s with Gwen.

I don't know, I guess The Vibe in this story just felt right to me, and I loved it to bits.

A lil excerpt:

Before this, Merlin was a comfortable presence at Arthur’s side. He was like Arthur’s right arm. Or maybe, more precisely, like one of Arthur’s old battle wounds: occasionally annoying, but a familiar part of his body. And now. Merlin seems to have acquired his own body. And a pair of lips. Lips that Gwen kissed. It’s absurd how little time it takes for his mind to spin Gwen’s original, innocent story into something more tawdry. He pictures Gwen sitting in Merlin’s lap, rubbing her thumb under his chin, pushing up until he consents to let his head fall back. Gwen would pull down Merlin’s stupid scarf, admire his Adam’s Apple, feel the beat of his pulse under her fingers, and stroke up and down his throat while Merlin breathed open-mouthed at the ceiling, probably aroused and nervous. Would Merlin be nervous? Arthur thinks so. 

@merlinemrys has also published some Merwenthur fics on AO3, as well as @flight-of-fantasy, who's recently updated their Merwenthur fic. They both might have more to rec.

If you've read or will read fleete's story, I've tried my hand at a sequel, because personally I needed more.

The idea is that there's this ancient curse that's been unleashed on the land creating this magic rot that's slowly been devouring forests, towns, and eventually maybe even whole kingdoms! The rot can overtake animals and people, warping them into dangerous mirrors of their past self, this AU's take on doodlerization. the sauce if you will <3

Taylor is a member of the royal court of the Kingdom of Hell (son of the first prince Nick) and Link is his loyal guard and bestie who keeps him from dying in their shenanigans and escapades. They have a silly goofy, I've known you my whole life and I will die to protect you bc you're the person dearest to me also ur a dumbass who's stupid as fuck, energy going on <3 friends to dumbasses to lovers <3

Normal is a regular villager who recently happened to score an apprenticeship with the castle healer! Apparently his dad knew someone in the court and managed to pull some strings, wonder what that's all about. (spoiler alert: its pretty important and he's also secretly royalty but doesn't know it)

Scary is an amateur witch <3 She saw her mom start dating the castle wizard and was like FUCK THAT GUY AND HIS STUFFY BOOKS. BET I COULD DO THAT BUT BETTER AND COOLER AND LESS NERDY. So she's been sneaking off to practice magic with rudimentary materials and a few nicked things Terry left around their cottage.

Turns out Scary has a natural talent for certain parts of magic because she accidentally stumbles upon a prophecy outlining the world's possible end unless a certain group of people go to the ruins of a lost kingdom to stop the rot. And when she finds out who those people are she's like FUUUUUCK. bc now she's gotta find a way to sneak into the castle to somehow find these losers, one of which is apparently a PRINCE !! and then they've all gotta go out and not die on an adventure or else EVERYONE'S gonna die. and like she can't be bothered but also ig it would be kind of cool to shove it in her stepdad's face that she's more awesome than him and saved the world so. off she goes!

Hermie's the second prince who is often overshadowed by his older half brother. He happens to overhear the group talk about the prophecy around the time they're preparing to leave and tags along to prove his worth to his dads and also have people pay attention for him for once goddamn !!!!! also the healer boy is kinda cute <3

Cue super fun goofy and exciting magical fantasy quest !!! Secrets are revealed! Bonds are formed! Possible corruption? MAYHAPS! Also where even ARE the ruins of the kingdom of Oakvale no one seems to have heard of it at all! All while the rot continues to spread....

empires fanon swap request: fwhip from sanctuary!

I might've misread the prompt because I assume you take an idea from season one and change it for season two BUT. Here's the concept (art & notes):

fWhip trades wood types from the Nether in the overworld, as well as Nether Stars. These are rarer and he only really gives them out to allies since he says it takes a lot of effort for him to get them and he's very attached to them. He has some plants naturally growing on him, mainly from Crimson Trees, and has more of an interest in fixing anything that goes wrong rather than anything being corrupted and helping it, so on and so forth. His clothes would also have embroided vines on it, but its most noticeable on his jacket. Whoever runs Chromia would probably do it in exchange for one of his stars. His version of the Sanctuary would also be a place for people to send Nether mobs that wander into the Overworld -- mainly things like zombie Hoglins that would take a while to return.

And now the doodle that. is admittedly a bit rushed since it's getting quite late here. While the design isn't much different from season one, he would keep the googles because I imagine he would take an industrial angle to the wood business and you don't want chips in your eyes. He has a Nether Star pin badge holding his scarf together too.
