idk if this would be helpful to you but how about. you pick your fave 5 letters. then make up a thesis statement/question/thing that stars with each of thise 5 letters. and then make a poll and have people vote on it? not the same as getting assigned something specific but it might give you direction. in case you dont have any favourite letters here are my 10 top 10 if you want more examples 1. j 2. e 3. o 4. g 5. d 6. b 7. i 8. l 9. z 10. u
if this isnt totally your thing and youre not interest u dont have to reply i just thought maybe u need a nudge like this :-)
augh this is brilliant thank you my friend ill give this a spin :-) those are very good letters indeed!! thank you for your help, getting peer reviewed should be very useful, so ill think about those statements now!
#ive had a pretty good idea since before i started at university and i could've been getting paid for it all this time if i wasn't busy doing#the érettségi before the application deadline so i never pursued it because also the more i thought about it the more pointless it seemed#but i just said to my mum 'the romans brought christianity to the british isles' and she said 'huh?' and then she said that i dont have to#write a phd right now and i can just compare the texts im thinking about and that'll be plenty i dont have to do the history of them#and that does seem more doable. and i can bring india into it and also the shakers. and that should tide me over#but i hate my own writing so much i cant make myself not sound capricious in my essays and i get hung up on technicalities all the time#and then inevitably do stupid wordplay and get all coy with it. i just need to be genuine about it and write about this thing and that's it#and i need to email boldizsár. sorry boldizsár i have all sorts of things i hope you're not tired of me#but also i have tons of ideas but when i start to think whether they could work the answer is always no#ill try to write a thesis proposal in the next few days and see where that gets me and if i can write it (1200 words) i can probably write#a thesis. and then ill have committed and i wont be in 153563 minds about this and i can close all my tabs in my browser and ill know joy#once again#asks#thank you so much for this ask this is such a good technique!!!#ref

Hi! I enjoy your stories very much. As a shy person myself wanting to push myself out of a shell I am curious if you've always been naturally good at meeting people, or do you get social anxiety too? Sorry if this is a super random/personal question. I appreciate you!
I used to get REALLY bad social anxiety but then I accidentally threw myself off the deep end on the first night of college when I heard people assembling furniture out in the hall and thought "If I do not get up right this second and go hang out with those people I'm going to lie here crying about how much I miss my family all night and they wouldn't want that."
So I went out in the hall and said "Hi! I'm [Gallus], and I thought I should meet people instead of being a miserable wreck in my room!"
And then we spent the rest of the night assembling dorm furniture, talking about weeb shit and generally having a good time! and every single time I've gone and introduced myself to someone since then, I've either made MORE friends and had a good time, or had, at worst, a perfectly neutral time. So that positive re-enforcement really helped.
Anyway, the three Guidlines to Meeting People:
Meet people at places they expect to meet people. People do not want to make friends when they are busy with something else- see how much we hate it when people come to the door when we were working or cleaning. But when they're at somewhere they expect to socialize like a Hobby Meeting, a convention, The Club? they're THRILLED to make friends and tbh probably glad you broke the ice. Go to places where people who share interests with you are meeting. They'll probably adopt you.
2. The Worst Thing that will happen is that you will lightly confuse someone. No for real. Nobody is going to scream at you and you're not going to terrorize someone by saying hi. It's fine.
3. Sample conversation script for those of us who have brains that make us act like we're in a movie:
*Be At Place to Meet People* *See someone who looks interesting to talk to, who is not actively doing a physical task or already having a conversation* You: Hello! I love your (Physical aspect of their appearance they chose: Hair color, lobster-themed dress/Dog/Orbital mechanics tattoo)!" Them: Oh, thanks! It (single sentence of explanation: I did it myself/It has pockets/He loves people/I got it for completing my thesis!) (this is a sign that they are open to social activity) You: That's so cool! I'm (you name), and I'm new here. You seem like cool people, can I hang out with you? Them, and I actually for real swear this will be the answer 90% of the time: Sure!
Congratulations! You have introduced yourself to someone. Continue to be a huge dweeb about the thing you have a mutual interest in and you will shortly have a new friend!

”Start of the season-drama”
Max Verstappen x reader
TW: angst, assumed cheating
~~~~
“I wish you could come with me.” You looked over at your boyfriend next to you by the kitchen counter. He didn’t meet your gaze, face contoured in concentration as he formed the ground beef into patties.
“I know baby.” You agreed, reaching for a bowl to put the cut cucumber in. Max grabbed it for you.
“Are you sure you can’t come with? Bahrain is nice.” He softly bumped his arm against yours, offering a playful smile. You chuckled, shaking your head.
“I would love to, you know that. But I have my thesis to write.”
“You can do that on the road.” He tried, but you both knew the answer. This conversation had been on repeat for the last few months and every time it ended with Max, somewhat disappointed, agreeing that it would be best if you stayed home. You weren’t surprised he tried one last time tonight.
“Even if I could Maxie, I still have to work and I can’t do that from Bahrain.” Even before he spoke up you knew what his next argument would be and if anything got under your skin, it was this.
“You don’t need to work though. You have me.” The way he said it so casually, like he always did, had your stomach twisting. You hated that he saw it like that, and no matter how many times you talked about it Max didn’t seem to understand your point of view. You clenched your jaw, physically biting your tongue not to say anything back. Instead you concentrated back on the work on the cutting board, brows slightly furrowed. Things were quiet for a few moments, Max being busy with the meat in the frying pan, and you had almost blocked him out completely, deep in your own thoughts, when you felt two strong arms wrap around your waist. Your back was softly pulled flush against his chest and a second later he nudged the side of your head with his nose.
“I’m sorry.” He mumbled, pressing a few kisses against your cheek and down your shoulder. “Of course you have things to do here, I get that. I’m just going to miss you, that’s all.” You couldn’t help but smile, the frown melting of your face in a second. How could you ever stay annoyed at him when he was this cuddly and cute? You placed the knife down, turning around in his rather tight grip to face him. Max looked down at you, tilting his head slightly as to ask if he was forgiven. You just reached up to grab his cheeks, bringing his face down to yours for a kiss. You felt him smile against your lips.
“I’m going to miss you too.” You said when the two of you finally pulled apart. “But it’s just two weeks, right?”
“Hmm.” Max nodded, fingers pressing into the skin just above your hips. “Then I’ll come straight back home and I won’t leave your side for at least a few days.” You laughed at that, snaking your arms around his torso and leaning your head against his chest. Max pulled you even closer, a deep breath leaving his lips. You were going to miss him, but two weeks went fast and you told yourself that he’d be back, preferably with two wins under his belt, before you knew it.
~
The first race had been amazing. You had watched from home with some of your friends, absolutely ecstatic and somewhat tipsy as your boyfriend passed the finish line in first place what felt like hours ahead of the rest. When he called you after the win you had literally screamed into the phone how proud you were of him and hearing him laugh loudly on the other end had you smiling the whole night.
That was four days ago. You had been busy, work was more chaotic than normal and your limited freetime was spent in the library working on your thesis. Unfortunately, this also meant that you had missed a few of Maxs phone calls and when you’d called him back he had been busy instead. You texted a lot, but it had been a few days since you last heard his voice and you were starting to miss it.
Getting back late from the library, not at all happy with the work you had done, all you wanted to do was to call Max and have him tell you about his day. You knew he had been at the annual banquet in Jeddah last night, which he hated, and you were excited to hear all the gossip. You sunk down in the couch, making yourself comfortable as you searched up the results of the first practice round. You always wanted to know how things were going for Max before you spoke to him, partly to show him that you cared and partly because you wanted to know what mood he might be in. You smiled to yourself, pleased, when you saw him at the top of the rankings. Absentminded you begun to scroll down among the tweets, rolling your eyes at the people hating on Max and grinning proudly at all the people joking about how this season would just be win after win after win for him. Suddenly you stopped, a tweet written all in caps catching your eye.
MAX VERSTAPPEN LOOKING DAPPER WITH MYSTERIOUS BLONDE! DID HE LEAVE HIS GIRLFRIEND AT HOME?
You raised your eyebrows, not being able to stop yourself from clicking on the photos. Surely it was going to be something dumb, you were used to the rumors surrounding your boyfriend and you had simply learned to just tune them out. Scrolling through the pictures now, however, you could feel your stomach drop. It was blurry, but it was clearly Max. The photos were taken from far away but you saw him, dressed handsomely in a suit and bowtie, with his arms tightly wrapped around a tall blonde. Her back was turned against the camera so you couldn’t make out her face, but you didn’t recognize the body at all. The two of them seemed to be alone, standing outside what looked like the building where the banquet was held. In one picture Max was shown grabbing her cheeks, staring down at her. You squinted, as if that would help you distinguish his expression, but you couldn’t quite tell what was happening. You couldn’t deny that it sure looked like he was about to kiss her. Quickly locking your phone you dropped it in your lap, staring down at the black screen with wide eyes. That wasn’t just some rumor, something someone had claimed to see or made up. Those were real photos, photos of Max being way too close for comfort with someone who clearly wasn’t you. You knew you should calm down, take a step back until you could talk to him and let him explain. Surely there was an explanation that didn’t involve him actually cheating on you? Right? Before you had time to spiral further your phone lit up again, the picture of Max sleeping, drooling, in a cab you had as his contact photo illuminating your screen. Acting on reflex you picked it up, sliding your finger across the screen.
“Hello?”
“Baby!” He seemed surprised that you answered but quickly regained himself. “Am I disturbing you? Are you at home?”
“I just got home.” You answered, frowning at the shortness of your own tone. You weren’t sure how to approach him, you weren’t even sure what to say. Were you mad? Sad?
“Good. Feels like we’ve just missed each other the past few days.” Max shuffled around on the other end and you assumed he was laying in bed. With a content sigh he spoke again and you could hear the smile on his face. “How are you my love?”
“I’m good.” You mumbled, clicking on the speaker icon and placing your phone down in your lap.
“How’s the thesis coming along? I assume you just came from the library?”
“Hmm, yeah I did. It’s fine.” Max obviously picked something up in your voice because he was quiet for a few seconds before speaking up again.
“I hope you’re not spreading yourself too thin baby, you have to take a break sometimes.” His voice was full of concern and you don’t know if it was that or the pictures still haunting you but suddenly all you wanted was to be next to him. “Have you eaten today?”
“Actually,” you began, deciding what to say as the words were coming out of your mouth. “I was thinking about maybe coming to you? I think I can make it to the race if I leave tomorrow and-“ you stopped as you heard Max laugh on the other end, stomach twisting at the sound you usually loved. That was not the reaction you wanted.
“You know I miss you but that’s crazy baby.” He chuckled. You could feel the pressure take form behind your eyes. “You have things to do and I’ll be home in less than a week.”
“Yeah but I want to see you now. I thought you’d want that too.” You hated that his reaction, a very reasonable reaction at that, left you feeling so hurt.
“Of course I want to see you, but you shouldn’t come all the way here when we both know-“
“I shouldn’t?” His choice of words felt like a punch in the stomach and you frowned down at the phone. Max took a second too long to respond so you spoke again. “Why shouldn’t I? You don’t want me there?”
“What’s all this coming from?” The smile was far gone from his voice and now he just sounded bewildered. “You’re the one who opted to stay home because you had work to do.”
“Yeah well that was before I knew you’d cozy up with some other girl if I’m not there.”
You pressed your eyes shut, cringing at your own words the second they left your lips. You did not mean to put that out there like that. The line went quiet for a moment before Max broke the silence, voice as confused as it gets.
“What?”
You wanted to cry. “Nothing.”
“No, what did you say?”
“Nothing Max. Don’t worry about it.” You snapped, hating yourself more every time you opened your mouth. You really needed this conversation to be over, preferably before you started to cry. “I’m actually really tired, I think I’m-“
“No no no, you don’t just get to throw something like that at me and then hang up. What did you mean by that?”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I’m sorry.” You were rambling. “Just forget it. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” You heard Max say your name before you hung up, heart feeling like it was beating out of your chest.
𝐢 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞
in which the pine tree and llama are the epitome of soulmates w/c: 11.2k words (not proofread) masterpost
“in case if you have forgotten, pacifica northwest is the worst.”
well, near the end of their first summer in gravity falls, worst would be the cumulative word to describe pacifica—in the view of dipper pines, that is. and how could he not? so far, all he’s seen of her was a spoiled, rich, mean girl who was nothing but awful to his sister. a product of a family consistent with fraudulence and an unwavering desire to be at the top—
“pacifica’s rich, she’s cheating at life”
“nathaniel northwest didn’t found gravity falls and your whole family’s a sham”
—dipper could describe pacifica in many words that would paint her in a negative light, but there could be only much to say about her that is justified by his character. he doesn’t hold a lot of money to his name, or his family for that matter, but he lived life honestly. to find the truth in all things.
and considering pacifica northwest was cruel enough to make his sister feel bad about herself? what more truth was there in calling her the worst?
amongst the roars and cheers of the audience in the telepathy tent, there was a pair of starry eyes that were completely struck in awe, and maybe... admiration?
but how could she not? from the flashing lights to the glowing cerulean bolo ties that match their eyes (which also managed to glow?)—pacifica southeast was hooked on the gleeful twins, especially the male counterpart of the pair; as revealed by the faint blush on her cheeks.
her cousin, gideon pines, begged to differ. though knowing him, pacifica knew that the chubby little nerd is hard to impress—hard enough that he might as well be dubbed the "fun police".
gideon just doesn't get it, she thought, if those dreamy blue eyes were in front of him, alluring as he is mysterious...
she then gets lost in the image that occurred just a moment ago: the gentle look of dipper gleeful's eyes boring right into hers, taking her warm hand in his cold one as he brings it to his lips, barely grazing the surface; all the while looking directly at her, the smallest hint of a grin gracing his face right after.
despite how cold he felt, how cold his aura was—pacifica couldn't have felt any hotter that summer night.
“i went from undergrad to phd three years ahead of schedule, wrote a thesis that was nationally ranked and was awarded an enormous grant for my own scientific research! but what to study…?”
after being rejected from his dream school, dipper pines worked twice as hard from his time at backupsmore uni to reap success similar to what he would’ve achieved had he made it into west coast tech.
one day, dipper pushes his hair back when he looks at himself in the mirror, pondering over his constellation-looking birthmark…
then suddenly, click!
in the blink of an eye, he finds himself in the middle of nowhere in gravity falls, oregon, obviously needing a place to stay.
that's when dipper goes to northwest realty, where he meets up-and-coming realtor, pacifica northwest.
"so, you wanna buy this lot?" she asks, unclear if she heard the guy right. "are you sure you wouldn't like to reconsider and opt for an alternative location? i mean—given this lot has been a preserved environmental space, and you'll be ways away from the town—you'd be funneling a lot of money just to get this lot and build a home here."
"oh, it's alright, miss—"
"just call me pacifica." she interrupts, but smiles.
"sorry—pacifica, i can assure you that money is no issue to me. i've recently received quite the grant to pursue an independent study, and this would be the perfect location to conduct my research."
"i see, but mister pines—"
"it's dipper," he cuts off, returning her smile from a moment ago.
she chuckles before continuing: "if it's researching your business here, i can gladly show you a place close to the local library—or the museum? our town archives?? surely this would be a more efficient use of your money."
"heh, you're not like the other northwests," dipper replies, reflecting on his own knowledge of the northwest family, "aren't you supposed to be like, bleeding me dry? i'm practically helping you more than myself here."
pacifica gasps, looking offended: "excuse me?"
suddenly, dipper realizes he's messed up. sometimes that mouth of his is too smart for his own good. he didn't mean to insult her, it was meant to be playful teasing that's all!
so he stammers, trying to undo the damage.
"i-i'm so sorry! i didn't mean it—to be insulting, that is! i s-swear it was only meant to be a lighthearted joke! you smell r-really pretty—"
amidst his ramblings, pacifica breaks into a fit of laughter.
"you're something, dipper pines. you know what, let me sell you the lot, and i'll pay a lumberjack to build your new home for you. don't worry, you seem to know a thing or two about my family anyways, so it's no big deal."
"really?" he asks, dumbfounded. "you'd do that? but why?? surely i have some money to spare after getting the lot—"
"i do have one condition, though."
dipper breaks into a sweat—though, he thought he's already gotten past that phase from his adolescent years.
pacifica takes out a small, square pad of yellow sticky notes from the front pocket of her orchid-purple blazer, puts it on her clipboard, taking a pen and writes on the pad. when she finishes, pacifica peels the sticky note from its pad and promptly hands it to the brunette.
"when that house of yours is built, how about i drop by for dinner? that better be some study if it's taking you away from civilization."
“call me crazy, but maybe she’s not so bad after all…”
dipper thinks aloud, surprised by the sudden change in his opinion. besides, how does one go from being the worst to not so bad?
perhaps he was crazy, or maybe it was the faint smell of champagne and flowers in those probably-fake blonde locks of hers... could there be something more to pacifica northwest that goes deeper than the surface? or something deeper between them??
impossible! come on, this is pacifica he's talking about. pacifica northwest! the greatest link in the world's worst chain—but that's like picking out a fresh apple from a basket filled with mouldy fruit.
so, as soon as he let his vulnerability scrawl across the journal page through his pen, dipper just as quickly crosses it out.
the picture can stay, though. after all, his artistic ability does a great job capturing the likeness of her beauty—
okay, i've got to stop that!
pacifica, on the other hand, could not have slept any better.
sure, she had to endure a grounding by her parents and a nightmare traumatizing enough to keep a tapestry of a one-eyed triangle demon locked in her closet so it would no longer bore through her eyes and into her soul.
but she also couldn't deny that it was a humbling experience for herself. pacifica had to face the music and realize that the pines twins were far from her problems... in fact, they might have been the first real friends she has ever had in gravity falls—and she's lived here forever.
the pines twins were the first to show pacifica northwest the truth—about her heritage, about what her family has really done to others, about the kind of person she's come from and whether she wants to maintain that legacy or not.
when she refused to shake that stony, moss-riddled hand, something clicked in pacifica. something that said her integrity was worth more than a dollar sign, that the price of morality could actually mean more than money; and she would have never come to that epiphany if it weren't for dipper and mabel.
after all, them being here has to mean something, knowing that she could sleep in peace, with dipper pines only a call away.
as the morning newspaper plopped on their doorstep, gideon was the resident of the mystery shack who picked it up off the planked stoop. what once was a facial expression of exhaustion immediately turned to one of shock and possibly disgust?
of course, when you read a headline talking about gravity falls’ most dangerous guy dating your cousin, those sort of things will do that to you…
GLEEFUL’S NEW GIRLFRIEND? LADIES STEP ASIDE!
gideon doesn’t bother reading the article himself, but he could tell from the pictures of his mortal enemy and his best friend-slash-cousin being dangerously close to each other—there is something calculated about gleeful’s smile… it’s clearly there for the paps, cameras and flashing lights and all, but there’s something more sinister to that small, suble, charismatic grin.
and that something sinister says: screw you, gideon pines.
“PACIFICAAA!”
despite the local news jolting him wide awake, nothing could’ve prepared gideon for the wolf-pitched squeals filling the shack, all coming from the small southeast.
“no! there is no EEE-ing about this, pazzy!” he bursts, all red in the face and pouty, to which pacifica couldn’t help but laugh to; it was a sight for sure.
it doesn’t take long for them to have yet another conversation about dipper gleeful being too dangeous for pacifica to date—let alone be in close proximity with—but she knows, deeper than the dark side dipper does have, that he is a good person.
but when you see the good in everything, rationality and skepticism won’t budge—which exactly is making the subject between the pines-southeast duo a million times rockier than it needs to be.
i should really get that mirror dusted… dipper thinks to himself as he adjusts his tie using his apparently dusty reflection in the mirror.
embarrassing. the man is already in his twenties, and you think that growing up properly-dressed, the least he could do is put on a tie correctly…
a ding-dong from the front of the shack pulls him out of his concentration, causing dipper to groan and throw his hands up in frustration. he was so sure he was going to get it right this time.
but a final tired, defeated glance at his reflection said otherwise.
nevertheless, dipper goes to answer the front door, where he sees his date looking… why is she wearing sunglasses, a shapeless trenchcoat, and a big hat? is she wearing a disguise??
is she embarrassed to come out here to see me?
letting herself in, pacifica removes the big hat and sunglasses, her platinum blonde hair cascading on her shoulders and down her coat, diamond eyes and strawberry-pink lips giggling at her dorky-looking date.
she approaches him already, which makes dipper more red-faced and sweaty. they couldn’t have their first kiss already?! not when their first date barely began!
he’s all the more ashamed when he puckers his lips only to meet air—cracking one eye open to look down at the woman adjusting his tie, smiling fondly.
when she finishes, she tip-toes to meet his height, giving a single peck on his red-hot cheek and chuckles.
“glad to see you, too.”
if there was anything that mabel has brought to the people of gravity falls, it would be her natural talent for matchmaking.
it’s already one thing that your enemy has stopped being your enemy, and another thing that your twin brother is finally starting to get over his one-sided crush, but for both your ex-enemy and twin brother to have a spark and potentially experience an epic enemies-to-lovers romance?!
it wasn’t the match she ask for, but love works in mysterious ways…
and if this match needs to be made, it shall be made!
it all started with the party at northwest manor…
while mabel had made up with candy and grenda, done with eye candy for the night, she just wanted to have fun and appreciate her girlfriends for a night—after all, it was their dream to party inside of northwest manor than camping out by the main gates like the rest of the townsfolk…
but then… from the corner of her eye, had she spotted her brother… smiling? and having fun?? with another girl???
if mabel has to be honest, she wasn’t exactly thrilled to find out said girl was pacifica northwest, but hey—if dip had to get over wendy, he had to start somewhere…
it didn’t help that she was laying in bed, wide awake in the dead of night, trying to figure out what was going on between the unlikely pair. it got more frustratingly confusing the more mabel paid mind to it, and can someone stuff a sock in her snoring brother’s mouth’s already!
but for a guy who rarely gets any sleep, mabel’s grateful that pacifica was able to entertain dipper enough that he practically went out like a light as soon as his body hit the mattress…
‘though not before sneaking in another quick entry in his journal,’ mabel notes in her head as her tired eyes spot the open journal laying atop dipper’s chest; rising and falling with it.
her eyes squint, trying to make out the drawing of the creature in his journal (not to mention, she’s trying to figure that image out in the dark)
when she catches a glance of the side profile, puffed dress sleeves, and voluminous hair, mabel’s hands join together as her eyes sparkle and a smile spreads across her face.
a scheming smile, that is.
roses are red, pacifica's blood is blue i read what you crossed out i'm onto you!
then, before she signs off her short, yet beautiful poem, mabel takes a final look at dipper's sleeping state; squinting her eyes and chewing the tip of her gel pen.
"start combing your hair, bro-bro..."
although pacifica southeast has barely cried in her lifetime, given that seldom events and things have caused her to be in such a miserable state, nothing could have possibly prepared her for the worst forms of sadness.
betrayal, deceit, heartbreak.
she knew she should've seen it coming, deep down in her heart she knew the true nature of the boy who instantly caught her eye... but it didn't stop pacifica from ignoring all of her cousin's warnings and looking on the bright side, as she typically did.
but maybe this time, there was no silver lining.
she looks back at the polaroid pictures in her summer memories scrapbook, a memorabilia she compiled of her first vacation in gravity falls and the first moments she would share with her family and new friends.
thinking that she would look back at these times in the future and see heartfelt memories, pacifica could only see the polaroid picture where she looked her happiest with dipper gleeful, as a tear drops between where the pair are shown.
he broke her heart, made her cry, but after some tears were shed and noses were blown, pacifica southeast was left with a heart done wrong and justice to be served.
if the gleefuls thought they would get away with this, they were dead wrong.
walking up to the doorstep of her boyfriend’s place, pacifica holds a small gift bag on one hand as she uses her free one to knock on the front door.
excitement is spread throughout her face as she smiles from cheek to cheek, unable to maintain her patience with each passing moment.
though, she wasn’t prepared for her smile to drop the instant when another woman opens the door, greeting pacifica with a single smile before swiftly exiting dipper’s home.
“oh, hey paz!” he greets his girlfriend, smiling. as if some other woman didn’t just leave his place—a woman pacifica clearly had no idea about.
she looks indifferent, refusing to give the guy any sort of response as she enters the shack, bumping her shoulder against his as she walks in.
noticing her sour mood, dipper tries to sweeten it up by using up his nerd charm. i mean, it was how he got to date her from the start.
“c’mon, northwest, no ‘hey four-eyes’?” he asks playfully, dropping his arms to her waist, “no ‘hi dip-head’?”
pacifica pulls away from his arms before he got the chance to pull her in any closer, turning her nose up and away from him as she closes her eyes and huffs.
“hey…” hurt starts to rise in dipper’s voice as she pushes him away, “are you okay? if i did something wrong, you need to tell me. you know i’d never hurt you, right? paz…”
“do i, pines?” she retorts, sounding frustrated. “do i know anything about you? because i know nothing about that girl who just left your house in a good mood, i know nothing about your family, i don’t even know what the heck you research or why you’re in gravity falls!”
“pacifica…”
she sobs as more tears stream down her face: “is it because you don’t think i’m smart enough for you? that i’m nothing more than a pretty face and sort of walking, breathing trust fund you hold onto so when you’re short on money, i’ll be the one saving your butt??”
the blonde turns away from him, not wanting him to see her so vulnerable. dipper, on the other hand, refuses to take this. was this what his girlfriend really thought of their relationship… of herself?
in that moment, dipper curses preston and priscilla northwest for causing their daughter to possibly think so low of herself.
“pacifica,” he speaks up, bringing a hand to her chin and getting her to face him, “the reason why we’re dating isn’t only because of your looks… surely, you must know that?”
he looks into his girlfriend’s tear-filled eyes, his heart breaking at the sight of her miserable state: “you’re so much more that what your parents make you out to be. i date you because i have fun whenever we’re together… you absolutely destroy me in fight fighters and show me that there are other ways to have a good time than books…”
he blushes, internally recalling their shared moments, “the truth is, i get scared. a gorgeous woman like you, inside and out, going out with a nerd like me? it’s like a dream i don’t want us to wake up from… but what if one day, you do wake up? i have nothing much to give to you, pacifica. i don’t have much money to my name, and my research is… laughable to a lot. what if you laughed at me too? you’d think i’m just some loser that’s wasting his time and grant money on weird stuff…”
“dipper pines…” she looks into his eyes intently “do you trust me?”
a silence fills the room for a moment, until he replies.
“of course i trust you, pacifica.”
taking a deep breath before she continues, pacifica continues to look into his eyes through those big glasses of his: “maybe i don’t understand what you research… maybe i never will… but, your work makes you happy."
she smiles at him, her diamond-blue eyes still hot with tears: "i like when i see you happy, dipper. it's... cute? i never felt this way about anybody else before, but i like feeling like this. i like when you geek out about weird stuff—it's when you're really yourself, and i like that you don't let what other people think change that about you."
now, dipper begins to tear up, but trying his best to compose himself—wondering how he got so lucky to be dating such a person.
finally back in her good mood, pacifica hands the gift bag to her boyfriend.
"i got this for our one-month anniversary, it's not much, but i thought i'd get you some more 'thinking pens' for your research... and a pack of chewing gum because i don't want to date someone with braces... or worse—toothless."
after sharing a laugh together, dipper takes pacifica by the hand, leading her to his lab.
"maybe now would be the perfect time to show you what i've been studying since i've moved to gravity falls."
mabel knew that summer's end was fast approaching, but it doesn't mean that there would be no time for romance!
besides, she knew that the plan she was about to concoct wasn't something to be done overnight... sure, making a match for robbie stacy valentino took a couple days to work out—along with the consequences of her social circle—but this project? compared to robbie, he was a piece of cake!
this was her brother. and her former enemy.
the seeds still needed to be sown.
it wasn't completely hopeless though. at least, after the events of the northwest's party and dipper's journal entry, there was potential to be explored. and if dipper pines singlehandedly had the ability to spark a change of heart in pacifica...
if only mabel knew how pacifica northwest felt for her brother...
then, just like a prayer answered, a 'ping' goes off on mabel's phone, revealing a text from an unknown number...
hey, dipper... so about that hug...
hug?! what hug?! she had all wendy's, candy's, and grenda's numbers in her contacts, so who could've possibly wanted to text her brother about some hug that they wanted to forget—
suddenly, as mabel gasped, it was totally clear who it was.
now, there was many ways she could approach this. so many possibilities. does she pretend to be dipper and try to hook him up? does she try to be a supportive friend and be honest with pacifica??
actually, come to think of it... after all the times she's been embarrassed by the hands of that northwest, she's been overdue for a bit of humiliation herself.
a mischievous smile spreads across mabel's face. matchmaking can wait, anyways.
“it’s over, southeast!”
cornerned by the two terrorizing twin-bots, pacifica is left out of options as the gleeful twins have captured gideon, his tiny body restrained by the big metal grip of the mabel-bot.
“you’ve been had,” mabel continues, “the only way for boys to be interested in you was by pretending—which is exactly what my dear brother had just done."
as pacifica turns from mabel to dipper, he turns his head; refusing to look back at her. whether he actually felt a twinge of guilt or didn't care enough to return her gaze was irrelevant—pacifica's heart broke all the same.
"now, we’ve won! with gideon possessing the first and third journals, the gleefuls can finally take over gravity falls… heck—we can take over the galaxy!”
as she laughs maniacally, the turns to gideon, still in her steel grip: “with you as my lil’ king!”
“a-hem,” dipper calls from behind—his robotic hips on one side, metallic arms folded over each other, and a foot tapping against the forest floor; probably scarring away any woodlen creatures nearby.
“you heard me, diphead. there’s only room for one pair of rulers here—but hey! you and will have made decent sidekicks in the past. if all goes well, i’ll make sure there’s room for the both of you in my court—ha!”
with that, mabel’s robot violently shoves dipper’s with one hand as she keeps gideon the other; her grip still tight on the poor child.
“AHH!”
dipper screams as he falls out from the robot’s head, his eyes shut as he braces his demise… if only he still had his amulet.
pacifica gasps, watching dipper in the sky.
“dipper!”
pulling out her grappling hook, she shoots it without a second thought, praying to whatever force out there that it latches onto some sort of strong branch, and leaps forward; the recoil pulling her towards the endangered gleeful twin.
then, before he had any idea, dipper doesn’t feel the weight of the wind and gravity pushing him down anymore. instead, he feels the warmth of something… or rather yet, someone, holding onto him.
he cracks one eye open to see that, pacifica southeast, the girl he’s been deceiving for the past month, glaring at the mabel-bot.
“pacifica?”
“shut up, gleeful. the only reason you’re alive is because you’re helping me get gideon back.”
TACK!—TACK!—TACK!
the stones that hit against the glass of pacifica's bedroom window were enough to annoy her awake. she hoped that her parents weren't bothered by the sound as well, despite her doubts.
"chiu?!" she exclaimed in a hush voice, "the heck are you doing out here? it's three in the morning!"
"pacifica!" the ravenette in the lab coat calls out to the northwest, fiddling with her hands, jerking her head from side to side; as if somebody was watching her. "y-you need to talk to dipper! he doesn't g-get it! wh-what's coming—"
"whoa, candy, hold on," pacifica interrupts, rubbing her temples, "chill. breathe. slow down. what doesn't dipper get? what do you mean 'what's coming'?"
"i'm not crazy, pacifica!" candy panics. "something's coming. something bad. but dipper's too stubborn to stop his work! if you don't stop him, this could be the end of gravity falls!"
"c'mon, talk sense. this is dipper, we're talking about. he wouldn't hurt a fly."
"i don't think we're talking about the same dipper."
with that, candy makes a hasty leave from the grounds of northwest manor, leaving pacifica in a mixed state of exhaustion and confusion.
candy doesn't know what she's talking about, the blonde tries to convince herself, dipper's stubborn, but not stupid.
she sleeps with some difficulty that night, but come morning, she goes to her boyfriend's place to visit; clearly concerned about candy's warning from the night before.
when the door opens, pacifica greets dipper with a big smile, to which he reciprocates, but then asks about the reason of her visit.
"can't i just visit my boyfriend? c'mon, let's go to the lake—your skin's getting pale, dip."
"look, pacifica," dipper speaks as he takes her hand, leading her down to his lab, "i need your help. you've got to take this journal, get as far away as you can from me, and bury it where nobody can ever hope to find it."
as he gives his instructions, dipper shoves a journal into his girlfriend's hands; on the cover is a blue pine tree with the number '2' printed on it.
candy was right. why would dipper need her to go away from him? what did that dummy do??
"wait, you can't just tell me to do whatever you want—especially getting away from you. why do you need me to do this?"
he opens his mouth, but pauses before answering: "i don't think i can tell you that."
she scoffs, "you're kidding. you can't tell me or you won't?"
"i'm serious, i'm not going to risk you knowing too much."
"that's a whole load and you know it. what about candy?" she asks, pointing a finger at him, "she's clearly capable of knowing more than me."
dipper sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose, "don't make this a whole ego thing, pacifica—"
"an ego thing?! i thought we were a team, dipper. i thought you trusted me! or was that nothing more than a bunch of words filled with empty promises?"
she angrily waves the journal, now pointing to it accusingly: "recently, you've been doing nothing but coop yourself down here and write in these dumb books of yours! i swear, these journals have probably gotten more action with your face than i have for the past few weeks. and after finally getting to see you in person for so long—you want to tell me to get away from you? sending me off like some sort of blind dog?!"
"it's not dumb, pacifica—it's dangerous!" dipper exclaims, losing patience with the blonde, "don't ever talk down on my research—"
"well, it must be so lame if you never want it to be seen again. in fact, i'm going to walk to the city dump right now—"
"pacifica, don't!"
as she walks away, dipper goes up to her, trying to tear the book from her hands.
"my life's work!"
as he hastily snatches the book from her grip, dipper gives her a single push of his hand while protecting the journal with the other.
pacifica yelps, losing her balance as she is forced backwards. the side of her head makes an impact with one of dipper's many machines, cutting into her skin before meeting the ground.
"oh my god, pacifica! i'm so sorry, i didn't mean—"
"stuff it, pines." she spats back, dismissing him with her hand. pacifica tries to recollect herself by getting herself off the ground and dusts her clothes.
she then looks directly into his eyes with pure disgust.
"if your work matters more than our relationship, if you don't even trust me enough to let me help you or even tell me what's going on, i'm done."
pacifica turns away from him again, but dipper calls out to her.
"pacifica, wait."
she only turns her head: "do you trust me, dipper?"
just like before, the room is filled with silence. only this time, pacifica doesn't get any reply.
so, she leaves his house for the final time, leaving dipper by himself.
hey mabel, um... is it okay if i could text dipper for a bit? need to ask him something real quick
summer is almost over, her thirteenth birthday is fast approaching, but it already seems like mabel pines' wishes are already coming true.
"DIPPER! PACIFICA'S ASKING FOR YOU! I THINK SHE WANTS TO GO ON A DATE!"
"WHAT?!"
dipper didn't find mabel's exaggeration amusing in the slightest. "it's not a date mabel, she just wants to hang at the lake—as friends."
"okay, so maybe i should join you guys. after all, we're all friends, right?" she shoots back, taunting him.
"no!" dipper objects, his voice squeaking; to which mabel smirk grows. going red in the face, he clears his throat before continuing: "i mean, since paz only asked for me—"
"i'm gonna ignore the fact that you're on pet-name terms now, but you do realize she only asked for you because she—i don't know—might be totally into you!"
his blush deepens at his sister’s accusation.
“c-c’mon! this is pacifica we’re talking about! she only just stopped hating our guts like, less than a couple weeks ago?”
“fine, but you’re still gonna hang with her today, right? she still needs a friend, bro-bro.”
dipper knew mabel was right, and even if she wasn’t as encouraging, a part of him deep down was genuinely looking forward to hang with pacifica one more time before his birthday and leaving gravity falls.
before summer ended and heading back into the unknown.
“help us, will! don’t forget i’m still your master!”
“don’t listen to him, you moldy nacho! i’m your master, not dipstick’s! obey me!”
“ENOUGH!”
the sound of will’s voice booms throughout the forest, bringing the town of gravity falls to a standstill. apart from the triangular demon, only the gleeful twins, pacifica, and gideon remained unfrozen
"i've had just enough of you two brats! generations of torment... well i'm sick of it. no longer is will cipher going to be a slave to the gleeful family! from now on—you guys are on your own! good luck taking over gravity falls without me, you weak flesh-sacks!"
the four children gasp, in shock at the enslaved demon's outrage. with a single snap, the mabel-bot goes powerless, causing it to go limp and tip over.
dipper and mabel clutch onto pacifica for dear life as the latter panics; trying to find a way to get to gideon as he is loosened from the metal grip, freefalling to his demise.
BOOM!
an electric, smoky bubble of blue bursts upon the mabel-bot’s impact on the ground, a ripple spreads throughout the town; bringing a gust of wind to the to the townsfolk.
because of the robot’s explosion, the people of gravity falls gather towards the source of the damage, where they don’t find bodies.
instead, they spot pacifica, mid-air, her hold on the grappling hook breaking her fall. dipper and gideon cling on to each of the blonde’s sides, with mabel’s arms wrapped over her brother’s shoulders from behind; nearly choking the gleeful twin.
as officers powers and trigger catch sight of the gleeful twins, they rush even closer to their aid.
"mabel! dipper! what happened?" trigger cries.
already pulling out the waterworks, mabel puts on her mask again: "it was southeast and pines! they tried to attack us and blew up our statues with dynamite! arrest them!"
dipper simply rolls his eyes as powers gets the handcuffs ready; gideon and pacifica gasp.
"officers, she's lying!" gideon exclaims.
"sorry kids," powers apologizes, "but we trust the gleefuls. and there's nothing short of a miracle that could ever—"
"okay, i'm getting tired of this," dipper deadpans, cutting off the officers. "pacifica southeast and the pines kid are innocent. we were the ones responsible behind the—"
"mason pines you shut your mouth right now!" mabel snaps, momentarily breaking through her façade, before realizing her slight error and giggles it off.
"heh, what i mean to say officers, is that my poor brother must be concussed and clearly has no idea what he's saying—heh—right, dipper?"
"hmm..." he hums, tapping his chin in thought, "i don't think so, i remember someone shoving me... causing me to fall from seventy feet high..."
staring at mabel, dipper gives a smirk her way before swiftly referring to the hand in his front pocket, revealing only a sliver of a small, black, flash drive.
then he leans close, whispering to his sister: "now wouldn't exactly be the best time to put our enemies incarcerated, mabel. don't forget who saved your butt from meeting death just a moment ago."
mabel growls for a moment, then takes a deep breath before she speaks again.
"as a matter of fact... it was all a misunderstanding, officers. gideon and pacifica were saving us," mabel explains, pulling gideon close to her for a peck on the cheek: "my heroes!"
it has been weeks since pacifica had left dipper's place for the last time, and obviously, the heartbroken blonde hadn't heard from the four-eyed dork.
good riddance, she thought bitterly. as if it was any surprise.
but as the days turn from weeks to months, pacifica knew she needed to leave the house. the fluorescent lights and chandeliers in her family mansion wasn't doing much to help her tan... but what to do...
she starts by walking to dusk2dawn, the same darn convenience store where she met her ex-boyfriend.
yeah, smart move there, northwest.
as pacifica reaches for the smile dip, mainly to take a closer look at it, she can't help but to overhear some commotion going on by the register.
"i've heard some strange stories about that old shack, strange and spooky experiments..."
"gosh, i'd pay anything to see what sort of shenanigans you've got going down in there."
no... could it be?
when the curious blonde sets down the smile dip and heads to the front, she couldn't believe her eyes on what's happening before her.
it was a woman. she looked like her ex-boyfriend. similar build, similar facial features. her appearance could easily mistake anybody for dipper, but the fact that this was clearly a woman kept pacifica's mind focused.
what is this lady doing here in gravity falls? why does she look like dipper pines?? and why is she claiming to live where he lives???
"what is your name, you madam of mystery?"
"uh ma—" the woman takes a brief pause, "mason pines. parents thought i would come out a boy, so you can call me dipper."
pacifica gasps, but covers her mouth to avoid drawing attention. she stumbles back, then rushes out of the store.
dipper, where are you?
"when are you going to start opening your gifts? i broke a nail wrapping mine."
as pacifica holds up her taped-up hands with an amused smirk, the pines twins laugh along, picking up their gifts—though none of them were from pacifica.
not that she minded. in fact, she hoped that no one else would watch as dipper got to opening her present. she didn't think it was much special, so it must've been embarrassing in comparison to the other gifts the twins will receive, especially after losing northwest manor to preserve their fortune—but she did put a lot of thought into them.
after selling her parents' yacht and her last pony, she hoped that the presents she prepared for both dipper and mabel would be enough. more than enough, ideally.
"oh, pacifica! i think this one is from you!"
dipper's voice pulls her out from her thoughts. he gives her a big smile as he holds up the gift box, which is evidently, poorly wrapped. everyone else sees this, all of them giving her looks.
unable to take all this attention, pacifica's cheeks flush red, rushing towards dipper before pulling him over to the side of the mystery shack.
"whoa, sorry! i didn't mean to make you feel embarrassed," he immediately apologizes to her, reassuring her that it was never his intention, "if it makes you feel any better, i did so much worse my very first time gift-wrapping."
the two share a laugh, followed by a single nudge from pacifica.
"just open it, dork."
"you don't have to tell me twice."
so, dipper rips his gift open, revealing a book with a written note placed on top of the cover.
something to go with that new journal mabel got for you - paz :)
"you got me a revised, updated copy of anomalous phenomena!? anomalous phenomena was one of the books grunkle ford studied after university! how did you get a hold of one of these?!"
"i'd be lying if i said i didn't ask around for help," pacifica answers, looking a bit bashful, "mabel suggested i talk to ford, and he told me about the book. apparently, fewer and fewer copies of the book get made with every revised edition, so i called in some favours. it did cost me my last pony and my parents' yacht, but after everything you've done for me—i mean, the town—it's worth it."
"pacifica..."
she really has changed, he thought. and to think, this was the same girl who bought her way to keep up her family's fraudulent past, who actively tried to humiliate his sister every chance she got.
it can't be, not since he can't see her that way anymore.
so, dropping the gifts to the ground, pacifica lets out a small yelp as she is caught off guard by dipper's arms wrapping around her; pulling her in for an embrace.
"thanks, paz. i couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift."
returning the hug, she rests her head on his shoulder. "don't mention it, dork."
i'm watching you
at the gleeful manor, dipper and mabel haven't been getting any sleep. not since they've brought will to the edge and emancipated himself from their family.
where will has been tortured day-by-day, he has generously returned the favour to the gleeful twins nightly.
but today, mabel isn't having it.
"ugh! how the hack can we defend ourselves against will if we only have the second journal?! everything we know, will has a way to counter-act it!"
"you know, if you keep pacing like that, you're going to burn a hole into the ground."
mabel stops pacing at her brother's words, noticing how much she actually had been pacing. she groans in frustration, all while dipper smiles into his phone.
"you know, instead of being completely useless, you could help me—considering will's going to be after you, too?"
"i could..." dipper chimes back, "but where's the fun in that?"
"are you implying that staring at those not-so-secret creepy photos you take of the southeast girl is more fun than helping me? your own sister??"
"pacifica saved our lives, mabel."
"you heard her—she's done with you. why don’t you just move on like the rest of the human race?"
but if there is anything to know about the gleefuls, it's that they are indeed stubborn.
“how could i have moved on when i’ve never been infatuated at all?”
as if the timing couldn't have been any more perfect, mabel's phone buzzes.
"besides, i suppose your recovery in getting over gideon has been going spendidly, is that correct?"
“you better watch that mouth of yours since will’s not around to protect it anymore,” mabel threatens, turning away from her twin and picks up her phone.
“looks like my widdle giddy-widdy’s going golfing with—” she shivers before finishing, “pacifica.”
dipper sighs, putting his phone down.
“i’ll call soos to bring the car up front.”
"thanks for visiting the mystery shack! come back soon!"
as dipper waves off the last customer of the day, she goes back inside to close the front door; turning the sign from 'OPEN' to 'CLOSED'.
what she didn't notice, however, was that there was a stranger out in the woods nearby... hiding in the bushes...
wait, it was not just any stranger...
"alright, you con-artist..."
pacifica mumbles to herself as she observes the shop owner as closely as she can, though the windows prove themselves a difficult task for the blonde.
"i don't know what you've done with my—i mean—the real dipper pines..."
the merchant remains on the sales floor, adjusting, tidying, and restocking product. it looks like... she has even more knick-knacks to display, and...
oh god, that does not look fashionable at all...
pacifica shakes her head, getting her focus back.
"i don't even know who you are... but i know you're not good news..."
she looks down at the notebook before her, filled with notes and sketches of some sort...
maybe you're not such a dummy after all... she thinks to herself, reminiscing her former partner, hopefully these parts of your research will be enough to find you...
pacifica reflects on one of her many dates with dipper, this one taking place in her room at northwest manor...
"whatcha working on there, dummy?"
pacifica's question pulls dipper out of his thoughts, turning away from the open notebook before him to face her. he chuckles before answering her.
"you'll see..." he replies as he concludes his notes, "... and there!"
upon finishing, dipper tucks his pen back in his pocket, closes the notebook shut, before handing it to his girlfriend.
"what... is this? you know i can't understand all this anomaly junk like you do..." she says, chuckling afterwards.
"you're selling yourself short, paz," he speaks as he places a hand on top of hers; which is on the notebook. "you're smarter than you realize. when you put your mind into things, you excel at them..."
he then looks back at her, making direct eye contact with his partner.
"... this isn't to say that i want you to get into this life with me... i could never force you to do what you are not interested in... but i have a feeling, paz. a gut feeling... that i may be getting in too deep, that i'm about to discover some truths that will come with dark consequences..."
"dipper... don't scare me like this..."
"sorry, pacifica. i didn't mean to... but it's the truth. this research of mine—i have a feeling that someday, i won't be as careful as i usually am... so when that happens..."
he looks back down at the notebook, causing pacifica to look down as well.
"let this notebook help you. it may not be as detailed as the journals—but this information is still important. i'm going to need someone that i can trust and count on to help me if i get myself in trouble."
she's silent for a moment, taking in her boyfriend's words: "... but you're gonna be safe, right? if this is very serious, maybe candy would be a better—"
"it has to be you, pacifica. i trust you."
as she finished her reminiscence, she looks back up from the notebook to the newly-opened 'mystery shack'—catching the right moment that dipper inputs some sort of code into the vending machine, creating a secret passage for her to enter through.
"i'm going to save you, dipper. i promise."
"so this is it... you're really leaving, huh?"
dipper is in shock to see pacifica northwest standing at the front door of the mystery shack as he is about to leave it for the final time this summer.
she looks at his bags, then back at him as she makes her comment: "i guess gravity falls is about to have two less dorks once again... heh, g-good riddance."
her voice trembles a bit toward the end of her words, clearly saddened by the twins' upcoming departure.
yet, dipper gives pacifica a soft smile in reassurance.
"it was bound to happen sooner or later... but you did it. you finally got rid of us, right?"
she sniffles, but gives a chuckle, "right."
"hey... it's not like we'll never talk again. we have each others' numbers—well, you have mabel's and we have yours. we'll always be a call away from each other."
pacifica's eyes begin to water, trying to keep up her act up: "ha! l-like i'd ever miss you or your weird sister..."
she crosses her arms, turning her head away, but he sees right through her.
pulling her in for a hug, he whispers in her ear.
"i'll miss you too, pacifica."
as a crowd gathers around pacifica, at the final hole, she gets her golf club ready; a determined look written across her face.
from afar, the gleeful twins and observe with two wildly different facial reactions: mabel's being of digust and unimpressed, while dipper looks rather bemused and intrigued.
as the golf ball makes it way through the final hole, it becomes merely inches away from a hole-in-one, which draws further attention from the gleefuls.
so close... so, so close... is it going to—
but right as dipper thinks about it, the ball misses the hole by some centimetres, swerving around it and landing in a muddy puddle.
"pathetic, isn't it, diphead?" mabel taunts, "anyways, it's about time to show that loser how a real golfer plays, right?"
dipper scoffs, "whatever."
with that, the gleeful twins make their appearance known to gideon and pacifica: mabel sucks up to gideon as usual, but he rejects her advances and reacts uncomfortably.
dipper goes back to his antics, as well. he steps closer to pacifica, taking a bow, as well as her hand. however, this time, she quickly pulls her hand back and gives him the cold shoulder.
"what gives, sunshine? c'mon, let me see that contagious, cute smile of yours, huh?"
pacifica doesn't say anything back, but only frowns deeper.
"can't you guys just leave us alone?" gideon asks, breaking the silence, "you two have been enough trouble for us this summer!"
then pacifica finally speaks up, only looking back at mabel: "and apparently now we can't even play golf without you two stereotypical horror-movie murderous magical twins lurking over us!"
mabel gasps in disgust, but dipper is dumbfounded... maybe even impressed?
"oh, it's so on."
oh, dipper... what have you done?
as he wakes up, dipper finds himself in... he can't even begin to describe his surroundings. though, to sum it all up in one word: unnatural. yeah, that's the word.
even though he could try to pin all the blame on her, deep down, dipper knew he had no one else to blame but himself for putting himself where he is right now.
"bill! you lied to me! where does that portal really lead?!"
"oh-ho! looks like mister brainiac finally got smart! let's just say, when that portal's complete—your dimension's gonna know how to party!"
"no, i'll stop you! i'll shut it down!"
"a deal's a deal, pine tree! you can't stop the bridge between our world from coming, but it would be fun to watch you try! cute even!"
good going, dipper! he berates himself in thought, internally facepalming, if you didn't build that dumb portal, you wouldn't even be in this mess!
after lamenting his current situation, dipper thinks of his loved ones, those that he's come to realize—he's just left behind.
pacifica... oh, god—pacifica...and █████... take care of yourselves, please.
in the first month since they've returned home in piedmont, dipper and mabel were stuck in a loop between sleeping and hour-long calls to friends back in gravity falls while bringing their parents into the loop of their family lore as well as going back to school.
sadly, they couldn't make time to talk to their grunkles as much as the likes of wendy and soos, but, given that the stan brothers needed time for themselves to catch up with each other, the mystery twins weren't bothered in the slightest.
in fact, there was so much that was happening—with melody permanently moving in with soos and his abuela to assist her boyfriend's new promotion in the mystery shack, wendy working less hours as she faces another year of hell— high school along with the rest of the group, and the friends of the twins who were closer in age also preparing their return to school.
"so..."
"you can stop smirking, dipstick, we both know i'm not enjoying this."
pacifica orders as she looks at her phone screen, currently on a video call with dipper... on mabel's phone, that is.
"c'mon, public school isn't as gross as you think it is, paz..."
"it's not just that... i just— i don't know how people will treat me... after, yunno..."
"hey," dipper smiles empathetically, trying to reassure her, "we've been over this. candy and grenda promised they'd take care of you and have your back."
"i know, i know..." she waves it off, knowing all that worry to be a waste of energy, "it's all too surreal though... like i'm trying to wrap my head around it. after all, a lot has changed for the northwests since we've had to sell the mansion."
"well, at least you can take this fresh start with a sense of pride, right? you could change what it means to be a northwest. make something honest of yourself and bring truth to your heritage. you were the chosen one!"
pacifica giggles at dipper's clichéd humour, "speaking of... lazy suzan said she'd be glad to take me in. something about needing an extra set of hands at the diner—another pretty girl to reel in some empty stomachs with full wallets."
"she's not getting any younger, right?" he asks.
"more like, she could only handle so many customers at a time."
"you'd make a pretty cute waitress, greasy's won't know what hit 'em."
heat instantly rises in pacifica's cheeks at dipper's sudden comment, immediately taken aback by his words.
although it looks as if dipper didn't fully register what he was saying either, as his facial reaction practically mirrored pacifica's as soon as the words left his mouth.
"you're getting too clever at sucking up for your own good... before you know it, i'll be hearing about a new girlfriend by the time you come back to gravity falls, huh?"
pacifica tucks a lock of her blonde hair behind her ear, revealing more of her face along with her signature purple hoop earring; to which dipper's blush intensifies.
"maybe... it's not a bad thing, right?"
"i will sue you! i will sue you and i will own you!"
gideon, pacifica, and dipper share a victorious look as mabel threatens the lilliputtians from the outside of the gold course. though, those looks were wiped off their faces as soon as the latter turns back to look at them.
"look, i don't have any idea what just happened right now," mabel speaks, pointing a finger at pacifica, "but if you think—"
the guilt-ridden blonde cuts off the angry mage, handing her a turquoise-colored sticker with bubbly text which reads 'i a-paw-logize', featuring a mini illustration of a small—yet adorable—puppy.
"i'm sorry mabel," pacifica apologizes, rubbing her arm in shame, "i should've let you beat me fair-and-square."
mabel looks down at the sticker in her hand, inspecting it with a look of indifference as she raises her eyebrow. then, after a small moment, she looks back up at her arch-rival; reverting back to her casual behaviour, but visibly calmer.
she replies as she pats the sticker on her teal polo, "you're just lucky this sticker looks good on me."
pacifica smiles, a sense of hope and the idea of finally leaving this feud between them in the past. although mabel isn't as joyous, a hint of a grin graces her face, showing that the feeling is mutual.
then, a tap on the former's shoulder along with the sound of someone clearing their throat causes pacifica to turn around, finding the other gleeful twin holding a rose, looking more shy and sympathetic than he's ever been in his life.
"i believe i owe you an apology as well, sunshine," dipper says nervously, "it wasn't right to toy with someone's feelings, especially somebody who's kindhearted as you—"
"can it, gleeful." pacifica cuts off coldly, which is rather out of character for the bubbly blonde.
"you've got to try harder if you think i'm trusting you again."
twenty years have passed...
twenty years since dipper had mysteriously disappeared... the real dipper pines, that is...
and as much as pacifica hated to admit it... the search for her former partner is getting more and more difficult with each passing day.
when she looks at herself in the mirror first thing in the morning, she doesn't even recognize herself anymore, but it wasn't her looks she was thinking about... in fact, she aged gracefully and managed to stay as radiant as ever.
though, as someone who's been self-absorbed in their personal vanity throughout their whole life, pacifica doesn't see the point anymore. what's a couple wrinkles compared to losing someone who actually meant something to her?
so instead of the natural blonde that remains in her hair, or her designer top, pacifica looks into her eyes and sees someone who's stopped living twenty years ago.
in her reflection, pacifica sees nothing more than a shell of who she used to be.
however, today, she decides to try something different. since she's heard word of the new twins that have come to town, descendants of 'dipper' that are staying in gravity falls for the summer.
especially the six-fingered child. something about him reminds pacifica of the man she once dated—but she can't put her finger on it...
she goes to her walk-in closet, rummaging through the deepest corners to pull out... a-ha!
it wasn't anything special, no name to it, unlike her designer top, but the worn-out, slightly oversized cotton orange shirt brought some warmth to pacifica's cheeks as well as a heartfelt smile.
so, she replaces her slim-fitting lavender top with the worn-out shirt. seriously, it's a miracle how this shirt hasn't managed to get any moth holes in it or gradually fall apart after multiple washes...
then again, as long as that shirt's in pacifica's care, she can take care of that shirt for as long as she's willing to.
she has to—because it means that one day, he'll come back, and who knows if he needs something decent to wear.
after a few more months pass since the young pines twins have returned home, christmas has come to both piedmont and gravity falls—and though the feeling is supposed to be merry all around, it's not exactly the case for either dipper and mabel this holiday season.
with the possibility of their parents' separation being more and more of a reality each day, it's also becoming more and more difficult to keep spirits up—even for the shooting star.
but not all hope is lost—because today, the pines family has gone out to do their christmas shopping, and mabel was obviously looking forward to restocking on yarn for more sweaters to knit for her friends and family back in oregon.
dipper on the other hand, was stuck. not only did he not have the slightest clue on what to get for the others, but his mind was simply too pre-occupied with his parents' situation to even distract himself by consumerist indulgence.
"hel-lo! earth to dipper!"
the sound of mabel's voice was enough to pull her brother from his thoughts.
"c'mon bro-bro, i'm all stocked on yarn but you haven't touched anything yet... what gives?"
he sighs, clearly not interested in talking about their current familial situation, "i just... don't know what to get anyone. stan and ford are practically neck-deep with treasure, soos and melody are more interested in raising funds to improve the shack, wendy and her family are visiting relatives out-of-town, and pacifica—"
"ooh, pacifica~" mabel teases in a singsongy tone, smirking.
dipper blushes, but continues: "pacifica has everything. well, she lost all her ponies and the yacht after weirdmaggedon, but what do you get someone who has the money to get anything?"
as he crosses his arms, dipper leans back against a nearby wall and sinks down to the ground; bowing his head into his arms as if suggesting defeat.
so, mabel sits down as well, placing a hand on his shoulder: "dipper, you're the smart one here. if i was the one upset about being unable to find the right gift, what would you say?"
he raises his head slightly, giving only a peek at his sister: "i dunno, something about how christmas shouldn't be about gifts, but the people you care about?"
"ding-ding-ding!" she cheers, smiling proudly.
"okay, but it doesn't change anything. stan and ford are probably still out in the middle of the atlantic or pacific ocean or whatever, wendy's not even in town, and everyone else is with their own families. so what does that solve?"
the once bright, encouraging grin on mabel's face begins to falter, disheartened by dipper's sadness.
however, he catches sight of this, beginning to feel worse by his own actions. after all, his sister was only trying to lift his spirits and make him feel better. he told her what had been going on between their parents before they left for gravity falls in the beginning of the summer, and she's been trying to look at the bright side even more than usual.
this christmas might've not been perfect, but mabel was trying to make the most of it... maybe dipper should as well.
"i'm sorry, mabel. i've been too much of a buzzkill. the holidays have just been sucky this year... we've never known our family outside of california, but now that we do, i guess i wish we could've gotten together this year. things haven't been great since mom and dad... yunno... and things aren't getting better..."
"i know, dipper." mabel says, a mix of bitterness and disappointment in her voice.
"—but we have each other. we've had each other our whole lives, so at least there's one thing that can save this christmas from completely being the worst."
mabel sniffles, holding back her tears as she smiles at her brother.
"let's go home, bro-bro... i have a feeling that it'll feel better being there than at the mall."
so, the pines family leave the mall, returning home to rest before dinner. while mabel is beginning to knit sweaters for candy and grenda with the help of waddles, dipper plays dungeons, dungeons, and more dungeons with their father; leaving their mother to cook dinner for the family.
however, beknownst to her children, mrs. pines prepares a dinner that is definitely much more than four stomachs to fill.
as the family is occupied with their own activities, the ring of the doorbell along with a knock at the front door gets the attention of everyone in the household.
"dipper, mabel, could one of you please get the door?" their mother asks, remaining at the stove.
"not it!"
"not it—augh."
mr. pines smiles at his son amusedly, nudging his head towards the door.
"maybe next time, dip."
getting up from the floor, dipper walks towards the front door.
who could it be? he asks in thought, it wouldn't make sense if it was a food delivery, especially when's mom's already cooking.
nevertheless, dipper turns the doorknob, to which he's met with—
"MERRY CHRISTMAS!"
he couldn't believe it.
"grunkle stan?! grunkle ford?! soos?! melody?!"
as their names take mabel away from her knitting, she dashes towards the front; squealing and jumping into the arms of her grunkles.
"you've made it! you really made it!"
dipper, taken aback by his sister's words, asks, "mabel, what are you talking about? they never told us they were coming."
"correction, bro-bro: they never told you they were coming," mabel says, "but actually, they didn't tell me they were coming—not if i was the one to invite them over!"
"what?! what about mom and dad?"
"why do you think mom's been cooking a lot since we got back home?"
the sound of their dad's voice causes dipper to turn around. jaw dropping, his shock intensifies as he realizes that their parents were in it too.
"we totally got you dude!" soos exclaims, laughing with melody, "just look at the look on your face!"
"what about candy? grenda?? wendy???" mabel asks excitedly, tugging on stan's dress-shirt.
"sorry, pumpkin," stan apologies nervously, rubbing the back of his neck, "of course they wanted to come over, but they have their own families to spend the holidays with. i hope you're not too upset, honey."
"besides, you still have one friend who'd rather drop dead than spend christmas with her own family, anyways."
as the four visitors step aside, another familiar face is revealed to be in their company.
same old blonde bangs and bouffant, same atlantic eyes, but in place of her signature purple eyeshadow, she wears silver with a subtle red to frame her eyelids paired with a slightly-muted matte red lipstick. instead of her diamond-shaped earrings, are diamond-encrusted snowflakes, her classic purple outfit replaced with a lake foam green chiffon dress stopping at the knee with a fur wrap that is white as snow, finally completing the look with a pair of pumped-up silver louboutins (remember, pacifica is less rich, not flat-out broke).
"pacifica?" dipper says, his cheeks turning into a very faint pink.
"lied to my parents that i was going to the bahamas with tiffany, alexis, and tiffany's parents—thank god they make good alibis."
mabel's squeals cut off the blonde as she rushes over to her old enemy-turned-frenemy-turned-friend; the former pulling the latter into a crushing hug.
"AHH! PACIFICA!!" mabel screams in excitement. "i'm so glad you're here with us for christmas!"
"so, you must be the pacifica our mabel and dipper have been telling us about," mrs. pines approaches, rubbing her hands off on a kitchen towel, "i've heard a lot of things about you."
the child's eyes widen, immediately turning bashful: "um, more good things than bad, right?"
"of course," mr. pines answers, "we knew mabel would take a liking to you, but dipper? well, i—"
"okay!" dipper intervenes, laughing rather too loudly for comfort. he takes pacifica's hand, leading her into their home. "i think that's enough of that! everyone, come in!"
pacifica giggles at the boy's awkwardness, her cheeks growing a tad warm.
"glad to see you too, nerd."
"my wittle giddy-widdy! i need your help—"
"you're the worst."
and with that, gideon shuts the door, already heading back to the armchair before he hears the same pounding on the front door a second time.
"mabel?! let me answer!" pacifica beams in excitement, causing gideon to shrug and continue to make his way back to the television.
"go nuts," he deadpans.
"hey, mabel!" pacifica waves, smiling brightly, "what brings you here?"
"oh, hey pacifica," mabel replies, instantly losing her enthusiasm, "there's something haunting gleeful manor—"
"it's true, sunshine," dipper says, smiling at her, "if your cousin can't help us, our party could be ruined."
"okay, first of all, you're the worst." pacifica narrows her eyes, glaring daggers at the gleeful brother before turning back to his twin, "the party? you mean the same party your family throws at gleeful manor every year?!"
"yes, this party," mabel answers indifferently.
"hmm..." the blonde hums, tapping her chin in false thought, "i suppose i can convince gideon to help you guys."
"really?!" mabel asks, suddenly beaming.
"i guess..." pacifica draws out in response, "but in exchange, he's going to need three extra tickets to the party."
"what?!"
gideon's attention breaks away from the television once more, returning to the front door to clarify what he just heard. he tugs his cousin's arm, pulling her aside to speak to her in private.
"pazzy, these are the gleefuls! the same pair of twins who tried to kill us earlier this summer?!" he says in a hushed voice.
"but it's tiffany and alexis' dream!" she explains.
the two then turn to pacifica's friends, still by the television.
"DREAM~"
gideon then sighs in defeat, turning back to dipper and mabel.
"you heard her, it's three tickets or nothing."
"aah! i don't understand—what could i have possibly done to warrant this much arrest?!"
today's the day. after twenty years, pacifica had finally done it. she had caught that imposter; resolving the last piece in the puzzle to bring back dipper pines.
stepping outside of the government-owned vehicle, she joins agents lee rianda and nate menville, smiling victoriously as an officer pins the person identifying as 'dipper pines' onto the hood of the car, placing handcuffs onto her wrists.
agent menville takes out a tablet, displaying it in front of the felon, revealing footage of a government waste facility.
"at 0400 hours last night, we've noticed footage of an unknown party stealing three hundred gallons of hazardous waste."
"that's not me!"
pacifica, having just about enough of this con-artist's cover-up, steps up, raising a finger, pushing dipper's chin up.
"don't play dumb, pines. we all know it's you. you're as guilty as stealing that nuclear waste just as much as you're guilty for committing identity theft and causing a disappearance!"
the northwest was by no means, as smart as her ex-partner, but she used her strengths where they were needed.
she had connections. people she knew who specialized in genealogy, the kind of people who could scientifically prove that the apprehended woman before everyone wasn't really the person she claimed to be.
because of this, the evidence made the poor woman all the more incriminating to the government agents; fueling the grounds on which she were to be arrested for.
"miss northwest, you're making a mistake! sure, grauntie dipper might shoplift the occasional sticker sheet here and there, but she wouldn't make herself a threat to national security."
feeling guilty for the confusion and childlike naïvety that the young stanley pines was experiencing, she walks over to him, squatting down to his level and placing a empathetic hand on his shoulder.
"look, hon, these guys may have been watching your grauntie all summer—but i've known about her ever since i've moved here. i know i've been nothing but civil to you ever since you boys have come to town, but what you need to know is that your grauntie is not what she seems."
"you're lying!" stan accuses, pointing a finger up at her. "a-are you?"
"i wish i was... but the truth is... uglier than i'd like to talk about."
A/N: that's the end of the first part! if you want more, don't worry! i have a lot more coming! unfortunately, i reached the limit of 30 photos per post, so i'm going to have to make this a two-parter! basically, what i wanted to do here is work on three arcs in one! the thing that i really love about gravity falls, really comes down the endless possibilities! i've heard so much about the reverse falls au, but the relativity falls au is also brand-new to me. also, when it comes down to it, i really am just a sucker for multiverses (one of my first gravity falls fanfics was a crossover between this show and rick and morty—it was for a creative writing class in high school). i'm not sure if i'm 100% certain if i'm going to post the second part, because if anything, this was mainly me yapping about how i see dipcifica becoming official in not just the canon universe, but also the other au's i've included here. but if this turns out to be interesting for you guys, i might as well try to finish it.
in the meantime—please please please tell me what you think of this! i wanna know about your guys' interpretations of dipcifica in both canon+other au's! or maybe just other au's in general, since there are slightly different interpretations in both relative and relativity falls... i noticed that i've had more fun writing relativity falls, probably because that au is more new to me than reverse falls...
now that i'm yapping here, i gotta cut this short and get into the next part of this... fic?
and if you actually read through all this and got to this part—thank you so much :') it's been fun writing this so far, especially since this has heavily distracted me from the pain of my wisdom teeth extractions.
saw the sandwich post. i've worked at 2 different big chains in 3 different cities and you have no idea how correct you are. it's ubiquitous. i don't know what it is about poultry that is feminine but it is deemed so which makes you gay if uou order turkey i guess.
i consider myself an expert in sandwich gender science and i still don't know where tuna salad lies on the spectrum. i hesitate even to speculate.
I received this a while ago (sorry, I need to make a post about how September and October regularly murder my ability to socialize) but I've been thinking about the tuna salad question ever since. I've put it to several people I know who are familiar with the sando gender spectrum and got wildly divergent categorizations and theories.
I'm inclined to think that because it has the word "salad" in it, it's automatically gendered towards the femme end of the spectrum, but among the specific subset of Dudes Who Have Sandwich Gender Issues I also know that tuna fishing is considered quite macho because tuna are large fish, and tuna salad is primarily meat and mayo, which as we have discussed is (outside of barbecue sauce, testing pending) the most masculine of condiments.
As an aside, I had a number of people question my thesis that mayo is seen as more masculine than mustard, and my only explanation for this is that a) American mustard isn't that spicy, negating the machismo of eating something painful, and b) mustard is considered European and therefore effeminate. As a man who used to run a blog about mustard, I understand this sentiment may draw ire.
In any case, it does appear that tuna salad is a floating question mark. We're unlikely to ever serve it at the food tent -- we didn't even serve sandwiches with mayo on them this year because we were worried about food poisoning, and when you throw fish into the mix it just becomes more perilous. I leave it to the brave beings who run the delis and sandwich shops across this great nation of ours to continue to engage in the dangerous business of santhropology in the hopes one day our findings might be of value to the world.
i am VERY busy thinking about studying with akaashi while he does work.
sorry i’ve just been so swamped with assignments and exams and it’s so hellish - so much better than hs but still omfg.
cos like you and akaashi would go to the library and he’d have his ipad and apple pencil and while you’re working through all your assignments he’d be quietly reading through + correcting all the work that he was sent.. oh man i can imagine him with his elbow on the desk and he’s flicking through the pages on his ipad with his glasses oh man someone hold me back.
WAIT HE ACTUALLY HAS THE MOST CRAZY APPLE ECOSYSTEM. he is such a consumer and i think he likes all the matching stuff so all his products are the silver/starlight and it’s so crazy and u definitely judge him a bit for having air pod pro maxes but he uses them so often and lends them to you all the time.
i am a pretty study focused person as well and i imagine he’d always be focused so there’s no room for any distractions while you just work next to each other in complete silence, but he’ll still book a room so you guys have some privacy at least.
and akaashi will sometimes look over at your laptop and help you edit ur work too cause he’s a monster at essay writing and he’s always really lovely and kind about it. and he ALWAYS compliments your work (you get high distinctions all the time because of him).
and during initial research he’ll always have some random article that relates to your work that he just randomly names while you’re yapping about it and it’s somehow the most useful thing ever and it saved ur whole project (sorry this is me complaining about not having ANY information for one of my thesis topics).
and he’s also very good at slipping out to grab a drink for you at the most necessary times, like you’d be stressing over some notes you don’t really understand and somehow you have a chai latte in front of you and everything starts to click…
yeah he’s so cute oml like holds ur hand while u memorise and let’s you have a peek at the manga he’s editing during ur break i can't stop thinking about him.
and he always shares his music with you - like constant spotify jams / apple shareplay because he loves all the music you listen to.
AND HIS HANDS ARE SO WARM TOO - and if he notices that you're shivering he'll drape his jacket over you and gently ruffle your hair
he also carries your bags for you as you rest on his shoulders during the bus ride home. very attentive and nice boyfriend.
Sukuna that has a big fat crush on his lil bro Yuuji's upperclassmen friend that tutors him🤭💞
SHAPESHIFTED: RYOMEN SUKUNA
she was there, sitting beautifully and started filling the room, it was hard not to notice her glisten, when all the lights in the room— even the moon that peaks from the creek of the window darted like a spotlight on her, ‘your eyes might not be the color of the ocean but I get drown just by taking a secret glance, how do you do that? shapeshited and makes me fall in love with you?’
content warning: fluff, nothing else
sorry it takes me a lot of time to write this, I'm busy working on my thesis right now, and sorry I don't make exactly like your request but I hope you enjoy it 😊
THIS WAS FROM SUKUNA'S POV
UH OH, I'M FALLING IN LOVE
the moon is bright and the day is still young, i was just walking downstairs when i heard my brother's voice alongside a soft, feminine unfamiliar one. i kept my feet moving until i was able to see who the voice belonged to. she is sitting there with her small back facing me, body so tiny i'm afraid her friends had to lose her every time they were walking in the crowd. i keep on looking at her small frame until the brother of mine snaps me out of my own thought.
“sukuna.”
and just like that, she turned around, finally showing me how pretty someone could get with a honey voice like that. and suddenly, our eyes locked and if this is what people tell you about love at first sight i think they're having no idea what they were talking about. it doesn't make my head fuzzy and the world doesn't stop moving and the noise isn't running faded into the background like the movie show, but this? i feel hurt inside my chest like my heart alone wants to run and give it to her by itself.
she stands, showing me the biggest and the brightest someone could ever smile, it's beautiful, it's like a symbol of happiness, she looks happy, she looks like art even. and art was supposed to make you feel something, maybe that could explain why my heart is trembling. a quiet curiosity was planted into my chest, brain and I knew it was only a matter of time before she sunk beneath my bones, nurtured this deep-seated unfamiliarity into love so fierce, yet blithering, carefree and unconcerned, hopefully— that I would question if I had ever been in love before.
my hand becomes one with her, skin to skin as she takes my hand for her to hold— wishing it could stay longer after the void of nothingness hugging my hand back. she introduced herself to me but all I could hear was just the thunder underneath my flesh, underneath my ribs. yuji looking at me weirdly, doesn't get used to the way I reacted, i can feel his brown big eyes practically narrowing at me, but I choose not to pay him attention.
“she's going to tutor me, please don't do anything stupid or make too much noise,” he warned me. i flutter my eyes before catching a sight of him with his eyebrows up to his forehead. I rolled my eyes before waving my hand, and dismissed him off as if it meant nothing— well, It is, indeed. I'm a quiet person, unlike him, I'm not a menace to society. “yeah, yeah, whatever,” in boredom, i said to him and brought my feet to walk away from the living room to go to the kitchen.
i take a pack of cheese out of the fridge and slam it lightly on the counter. put pressure on the counter with my two palms before letting out a sigh. looking at the invisible living room, hoping my eyes suddenly had an x-ray superpower to take a glimpse of her again but to fail. “of course, what the fuck was I thinking?” a mumble under my breath could be heard. dramatically, I put my hand to my chest— hesitation felt in my blood. as I was feeling the thunder in my heart, I wail.
my knee abruptly turns into jelly, no longer having the ability to support my body as I slide down to the floor, back sticking to the wall of the counter. “what the fuck, what the fuck, what the fuck— what the fuck?!” I yell in whispered, finger pointing at my heart with narrowed eyes. “what the fuck is wrong with you?” I asked, hoping there was some machine error inside of me that's gonna be the cause of whatever was happening inside.
“you like her,” there's a whisper.
I laugh humourless, forcing myself. “yeah, bless her delusional heart,” I scoff while rolling my eyes. I do not like her, in fact, I despise her. her weirdly bright smile does not give me a whole damn zoo, her honeyed voice does not calm my nerves. she's not gonna be something I be thinking about for a whole week. she's just my brother's friend. just looking at her I can tell she's gonna be an annoying person and weird. “right, she must be a bitch,” I mumble, talking gibberish just so I can convince myself.
“she's beautiful, doesn't she?” that whisper again.
I went quiet for a moment, getting pulled by nostalgia back to a moment ago. my red eyes stared at nothingness dreamingly without I realized. the smile she gave kept replaying inside my head like a broken record, “yeah, she's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.” the whisper could be heard, over and over again, hypnotising me to keep thinking about her.
“you like her, don't you?”
“do I?”
the whispered whispering in my ear as I felt a hot wind clouding my ear. and that time I realized that it wasn't my head tricking me, that wasn't some demon or angel like you see in movies whispering to someone. “oh you sure do,” again with the whispering. quickly I snap my neck to the side only to find yuji with his ugly ass face close to me. “what the fuck— Yuji!” he laughed as I jumped in surprise.
he stands straight as he puts both hands inside his pocket. “you look stupid, what are you doing sitting there?” he asks, smiling knowingly while his eyebrows arise. I cleared my throat before shrugging my shoulder, “just chilling,” I mumbled. he just kept looking at me for a while before rolling his eyes. “man, you're so weird when you're in love, so fucking weird,” he sight and walk away. i stand in second, “what the fuck do you mean?” I asked, feeling offended obviously. he just waved his hands nonchalantly without looking back.
“uh oh, am I falling in love?”
OH NO, I'M FALLING IN LOVE
“is that blood?”
she looked up at me blankly, no thought behind those eyes, looking dumbfounded as she battled her eyelashes like she was trying to process the information. “y/n, is that blood?” I asked again. “no?” she answered with another question. I rolled my eyes, “that's not a question you were supposed to answer with another question,” I told her, seeing her white skirt got stained with something red. she pulled her skirt, showing me a quite big scar on her knee, “i fell,” she whimpered as if she was about to cry. her big doe eyes looking at me with quiver lips. I bit my lower lip, trying to contain myself from laughing and cooing at how cute she looked right now.
“wait here.”
I patted her head before going to the kitchen and coming back with a box of first aid kits in hand. I sit myself next to her and pull her closer by her under the knee. “you're so clumsy,” I mumble— treating her wounds. I took a glimpse of her before looking down at her knee. a light chuckle left me without I realized. there she is, eyes shut tightly, one hand covers her mouth while the other one knead with eyebrows narrowed— oh god, she's so cute.
“don't laugh,” she wailed, hitting my shoulder lightly.
again, I laugh, “sorry y/n, you're just too cute— alright, I'm done.”
after, I brought my face to look at her only to find her face changed into bright red as if all of her blood was rushing to her head. “are you okay?” I asked, worried if her wounds might be the cause of her state. “—your face is red, are you feeling hurt?” I asked again. my backhand touched her forehead, “you're burning, should we go to the doctor? I think yuji—”
“you shouldn't say something like that so casually,” she finally opened her mouth but her voice came out nearly whispering. I feel my forehead frown when the confusion consumes me. “huh? what?” she stared at me for a while, and I never knew that ‘for a while’ could bring so many things to my veins. they're doing it again, the hurt in my chest, the adrenaline rushing through my blood. my heart beating so fast it's literally banging on my flesh, so loud I'm afraid she can hear it.
she smiles, “I'm fine.”
I cleared my throat as I looked away for a second before pointing at her skirt. “go change your skirt, it's dirty. yuji might take a while to come home and I refuse to let you ride your stupid bike again after the stunt you pulled,” I said. she's open her mouth, about to protest before I look at her with a stern look, making her change her mind in a split second without me even realising. so without saying anything I went to my room and came back with a black shorts. “thanks,” she mumbled softly as her hand reached the shorts before going to the bathroom. I wait for her to change and sit in the living room, switching the tv on.
for a few minutes, I sat there in silence until she was slowly sitting back at the end of the sofa. my mind went blank with the tv noise as a background sound while pleasing her with a glance one to two— she looked straight to the tv but I know she watched nothing. pretty little hands fiddling with the fabric of my shorts that she's wearing. and maybe that's not gonna stay mine any longer since she looked better in it than me. would it be weird if I wanted her to keep the short? especially when I'm not her boyfriend.
“did yuji know you're here?” I asked, not very fond of the silence that filled the room, also trying not to corrupt my mind with something I shouldn't think about. “yeah, but he hasn't replied yet, but we made a plan a week ago, so yeah..” I nodded. just like that we flew back again to where we were before— silences.
we stay like that for a good minute until I hear soft giggles, making me turn my head to look at where the sound comes from— her. her eyes were already looking at me, “why do you keep looking at me?” she asked. I was stunned, mouth shut as I realized I never looked away from her. “you staring, am I that beautiful for you to keep your eyes on me?” she jokingly said, another fit of soft giggles leave her pretty mouth, making me smile in return. I kept looking for a while then nodded, “yeah, you're that beautiful,” I breathe. and just like that her smile quickly faded into the void and faced the other way. I feel giddy seeing her shy state and this time, my turn to giggle.
“are you shy, y/n?” I asked.
she quickly hid her face with the palms of her hands, looking away. I move closer, “are you shy, y/n?” I asked again, teasingly as I poked her shoulder. a muffled voice of squealing could be heard. she moved her shoulder as I kept on poking her. I hold her wrist and pull it out of her face only for her to stiffen her hands and giggle. “oh come on, let me see that beautiful face of yours,” I laughed a little. she shook her head and again, tried to turn away. I kept on pulling her hands, and the moment I successfully pulled her hands away, it was already too late to realize that our face was an inch away.
her cheeks were crimson red, plump lips were slightly open as her hot breath touched my cheeks. and again, everything starts to blur, noise muffled to the background. I force my lips to put on a tight line for a moment as I look into her eyes to her lips, suddenly having the urge to kiss her. it's not like I don't have the urge to kiss her every time for nearly two months, but this time? I feel like I'm gonna die and regret the way I live for the rest of my life if I don't feel the softness of her lips in mine.
“can I kiss you?” so I asked, whispering.
“yes,” she whispered back.
I never realized a single word can mean so much to me. who knows an agreement from someone can make my heart beat so fast but this time I'm not afraid if she heard the beating, I want her to hear the beating, I want her to know that my heart already belonged to her way before I have the right to, as if it was hers in the first place. my eyes widened after the second I realized, oh no, I'm falling in love.
OH, I'M FALLING IN LOVE
“are you there?” a soft voice from the other side asks.
I let out a sigh, unintentionally making a cloud of smoke in the air while I hugged my body with one hand while the other one pressed the tiny technology in my ear. “physically yes, mentally is debatable,” I told her. shivering got nailed in my body, caused by the cold weather. I chew my lips, hoping it starts to warm soon. soft smile printed on my lips after I hear angelic giggles from the other side, “oh please, don't be party pooper, I'll be there with you in a second,” she said.
I waited a moment before my body got slammed into the tree by something tiny and soft. a hand pulled my neck before the warmness touched my lips. I let out a relief breath as I made a circle around the waist of her. my eyes closed, following the way her lips moved on mine. “that's not fair, y/n, you can't corrupt me with something like that,” I complained after the kisses broke. she smiles, “but you love it.” I rolled my eyes in annoyance before smiling back at her.
she opened her bag and pulled out something pink. my eyebrows instantly lifted as I caught her eyes sparkling. “what is it?” I ask, cautiously. she wrapped my neck with the ‘something pink’ that turns out to be a scarf. “It's cold, you should wear something to keep you warm,” she said, still smiling. “but it's pink,” again, I complained. this time, it was her turn to raise her eyebrows. “yeah, and?” she asked, looking confused as if I said something stupid with the oblivion. “i know it is pink,” she chuckled.
“i don't want to wear it, it's pink. I mean, did you even look at me? the tattoo on my face? the red in my eyes?”
she became more confused, “it doesn't match my vibe,” I told her, only for her to roll her eyes. “oh please, you look cute,” she sang happily, fixing the scarf around my neck. “but I don't want to look cute, please take this off,” I argued while trying to take the scarf off. she slap my hand in return, “but I made this for you,” she pouting, eyes almost looking like a dog. I was stunned, eyes wide open with her beautiful reflection in my iris. “you made this?” she nodded, still pouting. I let out a sigh, “fine.” out of thin air, the sparkle that was before lost in her eyes now bolting back, brightening it before I even realised.
under the cold weather, those eyes and all the sparkle made me feel warm. I could wear anything pink, from head to toe, I could do anything just so I could get to see those eyes simmering with the warmth of happiness. her and those eyes, I'm willing to kiss the ground she walked to, each step, if it means her eyes would be on me.
“kuna, come on, walk faster!”
she looked behind her— me, smiling with her hand that was covered with a thick glove waving at me. “be careful, it's slippery,” I told her. she stopped for a moment to hold my hand and softly dragged me to the fun fair. I watched her frame from behind, eyeing the way her body moved, gracefully like art in motion. her cheeks blended with crimson pomegranates as if all of the splendour of winter bent to her will. people say everything was a reflection of lights, and maybe that could explain her, she was the combination of all the prettiest light that exists.
she's beautiful and adorable and warm and everything in between. the first time you meet someone you're not gonna notice the waves of their hair, but the first I meet her I notice each wave, the way she stands, and speak, and smiles, her face becomes something I'll be thinking about next week, and five months ago I don't even know she exists but now i don't know if I'll still exist if she's not here.
she's more beautiful than any flower, she's like gold at the end of a rainbow, she's like a light of sunshine beneath the thunderstorm. just like the old poem said, If I had told the sea about her, what I felt about her, it would have left its shores, its shells, its fish, and followed me. its would have been filled with curiosity about the girl who's been shaking the sky and sea, the cause of my religiously praying when I don't even believe in god.
how does she shapeshifted like this? she becomes something I admire. the things that I usually overlook now become something that I desire. how did she do that? how did she make me fall in love with her?
oh, I'm falling in love.
Since you write for Jacek, I asked for a ff in which the reader is Oliver's sister who is studying engineering. And one day, Oliver takes the reader to the paddock to meet with the engineers so that she can talk to them about a project for school, and there she accidentally bumps into Jack and they become friends right away. Continue to write as you want, but I want it to be friends to lovers in the vibe
If you do that, I love you ❤️
♡ navigation / request info / f1 masterlist
♡ warnings: none
♡ a/n: thank you for requesting!
Despite a slight age gap and some differences, you and Ollie were a great duo. One’s always proud of the other. Every weekend Ollie was mentioning his genius sister whereas you were constantly bragging about your brother's achievements to your uni friends.
So when the time came to start writing your thesis everyone could sense your slight uncertainty. Your brother being the first one to notice. And that's how you end up, following him around the track, this time not only to watch him race but also take a closer look at the car.
"Trust me, they'll love talking about your thesis," Ollie said, walking through the paddock slightly ahead of you. The black sunglasses shielded his eyes from the unusual sun above the Silverstone track. You felt a mix of excitement as well as nervousness. The thought of showing your ideas to professionals haunted your mind, different scenarios popping up in your head as you watched your feet.
Suddenly you bumped into something, or rather someone. "Woah!" A voice exclaimed as strong hands grabbed your arms to steady you. You blinked, looking up into a pair of striking blue eyes. A literal prince charming was standing right in front of you. "Sorry about that," you mumbled, stepping back. "Don't worry about it," Jack chuckled. "I should've been paying more attention too." His eyes lingered on you for a moment before he glanced at Oliver. "Hey, Bearman, long time no see. How are you feeling with the new car?”.
"Yeah, good to see you, mate! The car’s good." Oliver clapped him on the back. "This is my sister, by the way. She's studying engineering, working on a pretty cool thesis. I figured I’d bring her along to meet the team”. I smiled as Jack’s eyes darted back to mine. He raised his eyebrows “So this is the sister you can’t shut up about. Engineering? That’s impressive”.
Over the course of the next few races you and Jack became closer and closer. He was always next to you when your brother was busy. He would bring you coffee and listen to you rambling about your struggles with the thesis. He would always try to help even though he didn’t understand a word you were saying.
“I don’t think it makes sense. I feel like I have been rewriting the same thing over and over for the last two pages” you said. You put your head in your hands as you stared at the screen in front of you. Jack raised his eyes at you. “What do you mean?”. He moved his chair closer to you so he could see what you were talking about.
Your bodies were close to each other but weren’t touching, yet.
Jack leaned in, his shoulder just inches from yours, and scanned the screen. His brow furrowed as he took in your work, reading the lines over carefully. "Maybe you’ve been looking at it for too long - sometimes it helps to get a fresh set of eyes." he said, his voice calm and steady.
You sighed “It just doesn’t feel right”, feeling the weight of weeks of frustration bearing down on you. Your hand hit the backspace key and started deleting every word you had written in the past hour and half. “Hey, don’t do that,” he said, gently holding your wrist to stop you. “You’re so close to finishing. Don’t let this one part make you doubt the whole thing”.
You met his gaze, feeling a mix of frustration and gratitude. His hand lingered on your wrist a moment longer, his thumb brushing lightly over your skin, sending a reassuring warmth through you. “You just need a break. It’s late, you have been staring at this for long”.
“Maybe you’re right,” you whispered. He stood up, offering his hand to help you up “Let’s call it a night and go grab dinner”.
It was exactly what you needed.
The conversation was light, with Jack making you laugh over stories from the track, all the while reassuring you without even having to say it out loud.
You were sitting next to each other at a diner near a track. There was a pause, nothing uncomfortable, just a moment for you two to think.
“Thank you, Jack… for everything, really. I think I would go insane without you” you chuckled but you meant it. Jack looked at you, a soft smile playing on his lips. "I don’t think you give yourself enough credit," he replied, his voice low, almost as if he was sharing a secret. "But I’ll admit, I’m glad to be here. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else”.
A silence settled between you again, but this time, it felt different. You felt his knee brush against yours under the table, a casual touch that was a sign of something shifting between you.
He seemed to gather his thoughts for a moment, his fingers tapping lightly on the edge of his cup. "You know," he started, his eyes meeting yours. “Being with you helped me a lot also. I was really stressed about joining F1 but you always make me look at the positive things. You’re different, you know? I can be myself with you”. His gaze shifted to his lap. His hair fell acting almost like a curtain covering his blushed face.
You watched him, your heart pounding as he looked down. "Jack," you said softly, reaching out to gently lift a strand of hair from his face, letting your hand linger by his cheek. "I… I feel the same way. Somehow, being around you just makes things… make sense” you giggled nervously.
A soft smile tugged at his lips, and he reached up to hold your hand, his fingers intertwined with yours. "So we’re on the same page, then?" he asked, a hint of his usual playful tone slipping through, though his eyes held a seriousness that made your heart skip.
You nodded, smiling back, feeling the relief and excitement of finally sharing what had been unspoken for so long. "Yeah, I think we are”.
Jack’s face lit up, and he gave a quiet laugh, almost as if he couldn’t believe what was happening. His fingers tightened around yours. "Good," he murmured, his voice a little shaky. "Because I don’t think I could’ve kept this to myself much longer”.
Later that day
I hate him: hey…just checking in that I got home safely what are u up to?
I blinked, fingers tightening around my phone before I locked it, leaving the message on unread. My mother’s shuffling outside my door caught my attention, bringing a smile onto my lips as I watched her struggle while bringing all the dirty laundry to the bathroom. Then, I got off my bed to go help her.
My jaw clenched as I heaved a long sigh, falling back on my bed as the sun shone brightly through my open window, the light breeze making me shiver as I only wore a t-shirt and sweats. Autumn was slowly turning into winter; the weather wasn’t so warm anymore. I threw another look at my phone, unlocked it, and stared at the received messages from Mingi for a second before finally deciding to delete them from my notification center, rolling over in bed to muffle a frustrated scream into my soft, and purple, pillow.
Saturday (9:09 am)
I hate him: i had the weirdest dream and im not even sure i want to tell u about it LOL but uh…a grisly was chasing me??? and then u appeared on a fucking white horse like a prince LOL and threatened to like…slay it if it didnt leave me alone??? honestly…what a slay, bestie good morning, btw, doll hope u had a better night’s sleep than me (and dreamed of me ehehehe)
I sighed and put my phone on ‘do not disturb’, suddenly having lost all of my appetite as I forced the rest of the lettuce down my throat. My mother was sipping her kiwi and apple smoothie, eyes narrowed as she muttered to herself while trying to memorize the recipe of a dessert for later. Desserts were never her forte, unfortunately.
“Is it Seulgi?” She asked absentmindedly as I took a large gulp of my own smoothie, staring down at my salad, steak pushed to the side in my plate.
“Huh?” I asked distracted, eyes still glued to the dark screen of my phone.
“Texting you, your phone keeps buzzing, my starlight.” I rolled my eyes at the nickname, but didn’t bother to comment on it. I took a peek at my mother and her eyes were narrowed at me already, video on YouTube paused. Fuck, I had to answer her now or else she’d pester me all day long. And that would be a nightmare.
“Yeah, it’s Seulgi.” I lied, trying to make my voice sound convincing.
“Well, answer her then, don’t be rude.” My mother chastised me, pressing play on her video again, pursing her lips as she shook her head at whatever the man baking was saying.
“Later.” I whispered, biting my lower lip as my eyes remained glued to my phone, stomach clenching and heart dropping.
But I couldn’t.
Sunday (1:01 am)
I hate him: …you’re ignoring me, arent u? im sorry, y/n, i dont know what i did wrong, but we can talk about it we’re friends, after all…right?
『When you came along, I knew what was wrong
If you want to know exactly what I've missed』
Monday (present time)
It truly would have been a missed opportunity if Seulgi and I wouldn’t have grabbed coffee and went to sit in our usual spot in the back garden. The campus of our University was huge and that was perfect, because it meant people migrated and didn’t stay in one spot for long—at least long enough to irritate me to no end. Last week deemed to be rather rough, and I still didn’t feel like completely myself. To be honest, I thought about staying home today—and for the rest of the week—but I couldn’t afford missing any of my classes as exam period was slowly nearing, and so, I had to force my ass out of the house this morning before my mother could come and nag me about my weirdly unusual broody mood that has been going on for the past few days.
I hummed as I took a sip of my sweet coffee, enjoying the taste of warm caramel as Seulgi sighed loudly next to me, both hands cupped around her own coffee cup. The scent of cinnamon wafted from her cup and I scrunched up my nose, not too fond of the ingredient’s smell. Our classes started early in the morning today and we’d be here for at least four more hours, caffeine seemed like our only hope to stay awake and aware at this point. Given the fact that my baffling thoughts kept me up all night yesterday, I felt grateful that I was still on my feet at two o’clock at noon. As Seulgi fidgeted again, I chuckled and finally turned my head to look at her. She had a sheepish look on her face, and I tried not to laugh as I knew she was bursting to tell me all about her date with Wooyoung on Saturday.
“Well,” I started as I took a sip of my coffee, prolonging the suspense for her, “how did your date go?”
“It was amazing!” I had barely finished asking as Seulgi exclaimed, her cheeks turning rosy—and it wasn’t due to the cold air, “Wooyoung is—everything I thought he would be. He’s sweet and up for anything, he makes me laugh until I feel like passing out, and there’s just never a dull moment with him, you know?”
“One would expect that from him.” I muttered against my cup, laughing as Seulgi nudged my side, not looking too happy with my comment, “Oh, come on, it would be hard for Wooyoung to be different than the way he mostly presents himself; don’t you think?”
Seulgi grumbled something against her cup as she lightly bit into the carton, shooting me a pointed stare, “Well, yes, but…he makes me happy. Treats me well and all that, you know, he’s the perfect embodiment of what a boyfriend should be like.”
“Boyfriend, huh?” I teased with a smirk, wriggling my eyebrows at my best friend as her cheeks flushed an even darker color as she bit her lower lip, trying to mask the huge grin expanding on her lips. But as soon as I started giggling, Seulgi also broke out in a fit of giggles, hiding herself behind her wavy hair, pressing her cup of coffee against her face.
“God, I’m so down bad for him, Y/N, I don’t think you’d understand.” She mused, voice airy as she threw her head back, leaning back against the back of the bench. I chuckled and took another sip of my drink.
“Maybe I’d do.” I muttered, memories of my relationship with Yunho resurfacing. Thankfully, however, I managed to repress them as quickly as they came. They didn’t feel so gut-wrenching anymore, and to my surprise, didn’t leave a bitter taste in its wake either. What has changed? Certainly—certainly getting closer to his best friend didn’t influence the way I feel about Yunho, right? Right.
“So,” I glanced at Seulgi from the corner of my eyes as she swung her legs, looking down at her feet in the process, “how are you?”
“Fine, why?” I asked confused, angling my body to face Seulgi better.
“You’ve been…distant the whole weekend. I could barely reach you.” Seulgi’s voice sounded small and I gulped, feeling bad for making her worry about me, “You know…the last time you pulled away and disappeared, it was bad.”
“I promise you I am doing completely fine, Seulgi, you’d be the first person to know if I was in a bad headspace again, alright?” I reached out and grabbed her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. Seulgi sighed and then raised her head to look at me, lips pulled into a thin line.
“Promise?”
“Of course, I promise.” I smiled at her warmly and she hummed in contentment, squeezing my hand back as she took a sip of her coffee. I followed suit before removing my hand from hers to fiddle with my half empty cup, “I’m just dealing with some things right now. I think I’m confused.”
“About what?” Seulgi asked curiously, leaning closer as I continued to avoid eye contact with her.
“I’ll tell you once I have my thoughts sorted about it.” I chuckled, making Seulgi roll her eyes in displeasure.
“You know, I tell you absolutely everything about myself and how I fell, and you always shut me out and tell me how you felt about a situation when it’s been over for years.” Seulgi pouted, narrowing her eyes at me, “How’s that fair, Y/N?”
“Hey, we work differently, don’t try to guilt trip me now.” I chuckled and took a sip of my coffee, making Seulgi roll her eyes, “Anyways, what did you do on your date with Wooyoung?”
“We went to the cinema,” Seulgi’s face lit up once again, grinning from ear to ear, “He bought me roses, a big bouquet. And after the movie we went for a walk and ended up stargazing in his cabriolet. It was really romantic.”
I smiled, feeling happy for my friend, she deserved someone like Wooyoung, “That actually sounds really amazing…and romantic.”
“Oh, my God, are you really Y/N? Where is my friend that hates anything that has to do with romance, cute stuff, and love?!” Seulgi’s shocked face was mocking and I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms in front of my chest as I leaned back against the back of the bench.
“I don’t hate it, I’m just not a huge fan of all of those things, okay?!” I shrugged, letting my arms fall from my chest as I pushed them inside my coat’s pockets.
“Who’s the culprit?” When I raised my eyebrows at Seulgi, a sign that I didn’t understand her question, she chuckled and leaned closer, “Who’s the man that’s changing your views on life, huh?”
“Man?” I asked with a scoff, giving Seulgi a deadpanned expression, “Does it always have to be about a man? Can’t it be just the fact that I had a change of mind?”
“Sure, because of someone.” Seulgi had a smug look on her face, acting as if she won the argument. But there was no argument here and she had no idea what she was talking about.
“Whatever—” But I got cut off as her phone dinged loudly. Seulgi, very comically, scrambled to reach for her phone and as she opened it up, a wide grin stretched onto her lips. It didn’t take two braincells to realize who had texted her, and thus, I chuckled and turned my head. I sipped my coffee, taking in my environment while Seulgi answered her boyfriend, giggling quietly every now and then.
The campus was finally silent and not as busy as it usually was in the early morning hours. The cold weather also helped in keeping the garden a little quieter as most people preferred to stay inside the warm corridors and classrooms. But the chilly air was good, it soothed my nerves and erased thoughts that weren’t productive. Similar to that, were the emotions that I didn’t want to deal with again, like the guilt that’s never left me ever since Mingi walked out of my house wearing Yunho’s old clothes. It felt wrong letting him take them without knowing the truth about them, but I didn’t feel ready to tell him yet about the truth. I was scared, surprisingly, of what he’d think of me once he found out about Yunho and I. I was scared that—he’d walk away, like Yunho had once done. And that was a very frightening thought. But when had I become so attached to Mingi? When has Mingi managed to infiltrate himself so thoroughly in my life, that the thought of completely losing him became scary? And why was I taking the past few days so badly? It’s not like we were as close as Seulgi and I, or him and Seonghwa and Wooyoung, yet, ignoring him felt like the wrong move to do. However, the reasoning I always circled back to was the fact that I needed space. I had to clear my mind, to find the purpose of this whole friendship that’s been blooming between us, and to make sense of everything. I had to figure out first why Yunho barely scraped my thoughts now, and why was it was Mingi who I found myself thinking of so often. In case you were wondering, no, I still haven’t found the reason, and it was becoming frustrating quite quickly. That near kiss was a—mistake. Yet, it could have been so much worse—it could have been a real kiss. And a real kiss would have ruined everything. I didn’t want to open up to anyone just yet, not when the memories of Yunho still haunted me in my dreams and drawings. Drawings that now more often than not consisted of Song Mingi.
And to my horror, the flipping of paper sheets is what alerted me back to my surroundings as I had been lost in my thoughts, oblivious to Seulgi putting her phone down and grabbing my sketchbook that lay between the two of us on the bench. As I turned my head, my eyes widened as Seulgi’s expression held surprise but amusement as well. She chuckled as she looked up, making eye contact with me. I lunged forward in an instant, trying to take my sketchbook out of her hands, but she leaned back and away, putting it behind herself.
“Bitch, I’m not the only one who’s down bad for a man.” She said with a laugh, making me groan as I gave up trying to snatch my sketchbook back from her.
“I’m not down bad for a man, Seulgi, stop this non-sense.” I hissed, cheeks burning in embarrassment as she kept flipping through my drawings.
“Please,” She scoffed, turning my sketchbook around and making me grimace as I came face to face with an exact replica of Mingi, sitting in his chair, at his studio that one time he invited me inside, “Who the fuck draws so many drawings of one single person if they aren’t in love with them—”
“I’m not in love with Mingi, stop it!” I exclaimed, heart beating fast as Seulgi raised her eyebrows at me, looking unimpressed, “Don’t ever again say that, Seulgi.”
“Okay, calm down, whatever. You’re not in love with Mingi.” She chuckled, closing my sketchbook but she didn’t hand it back yet, “But let’s face it, Y/N, you have a thing for Mingi. It’s super freaking obvious even without the drawings.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” I hissed and finally snatched the sketchbook out of her hands, clutching it to my chest. I knew bringing this along today would turn out to be a mistake, and here I was, facing the repercussions of my actions.
“There’s this glint in your eyes whenever you look at him—”
“Yeah, it’s called dislike.” I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
“And I see how you struggle to refrain yourself from smiling when you’re around him—”
“Bitch, be for real, Mingi and I aren’t even often together around you for you to notice that.” I scoffed, completely appealed by whatever absurd claims my best friend was making.
“So you’re not denying it—would it really be so bad if you liked Mingi?” But Seulgi ignored all my interruption as she raised her eyebrows at me, smiling softly, “He’s a nice guy. Very well-mannered and with a big, and good heart. Wooyoung loves him a lot and is always worrying about him. He says Mingi hasn’t been the same ever since his best friend moved away for college—”
“Mingi is Yunho’s best friend!” I blurted out before I could stop myself, finally feeling like a stone was taken off my chest as I bit my lower lip, averting my eyes from Seulgi’s shocked expression, “Mingi is the best friend Yunho had always talked so much about while we were together. I—do you understand why it would be so bad if I ended up liking Mingi?”
“Y/N,” Seulgi whispered, eyebrows furrowed, “for how long have you know?”
“Long enough.” I muttered before clearing my throat, “So please understand that I’m not ready for whatever the hell me drawing all those sketches of Mingi could mean. A month ago I was close to bursting out crying even at the thought of Yunho, and now I fail to remember his existence on my best days.”
When I dared take a peek at Seulgi, she was smiling softly, almost proudly, “Fine, I’ll pester you about this later on, when you’ve figured things out, but until then—you can’t deny Mingi isn’t hot—”
“Can we stop talking about Min—”
“Hi, girls!” I jumped in fright at the overly excited and shrill greeting as both Seulgi and I turned our heads to be met with…Wooyoung and Mingi. Speak of the devil. Suddenly, there was a lump in my throat, and my heart started beating just a little bit faster as my eyes fell on Mingi’s tall form. It didn’t help that underneath his coat he was wearing Yunho’s sweater—the one I had given him.
“Hi.” Seulgi giggled as Wooyoung leaned down to press a kiss against her cheek, the two looking sickly in love. It was actually endearing, but I’d never admit it out loud for my own sake as I knew I’d get teased about it by Seulgi. I averted my eyes from Wooyoung and Seulgi as they were muttering things to each other, and so, had no choice but to look up at Mingi, who looked—expressionless. Something in my stomach dropped at his cold demeanor, and it was worse that I wanted to assume it was my fault that he looked like that. But just as I was about to look away, he cracked the tiniest smile ever, and I exhaled, licking my lips.
“Hi.” My voice was small as I gulped, eyes trans-fixated on the tall man as his smile became just a little wider. I don’t think I had the power to ignore him anymore, not when he was standing right in front of me, looking like he wished to be anywhere but here.
“Hi, Y/N.” Having not heard his voice in days, it sounded even deeper and raspier than usually, making butterflies erupt in my stomach as my grip tightened around my sketchbook. I felt a little awkward, perhaps even tense, as Mingi didn’t say anything else, just continued gazing down at me with his sharp dark brown eyes boring into my own. I had so many things that I could’ve said to him, but I felt tongue tied. I didn’t know what would be the right way to approach him after I ignored him for so many days. Would he understand? Is he mad at me now? Does he hate me now? Will he forgive me—
“Okay,” Wooyoung chuckled, syllable drawn out and sounding amused, “I feel like I’m interrupting something here, yet they are basically just staring at each other.”
“You’re right.” Seulgi giggled, and I finally looked away from Mingi, throwing a glare at my best friend as she had leaned into Wooyoung’s side, who stood next to the bench and her.
“Shush, you two.” Mingi beat me to telling the two love-birds off, and I couldn’t help but smile, “Don’t poke your nose where it doesn’t belong to.”
“Look who’s lecturing me about poking my nose where it doesn’t belong to—”
“Wooyoung.” Mingi’s tone held a warning, and it made Wooyoung giggle as he leaned down and pressed a fat kiss against Seulgi’s cheek—again—making her push him away playfully.
“We’re headed to class, are you coming over later?” Wooyoung smiled down at his girlfriend, playing with a strand of her hair.
“Maybe, if I get to finish my project.” Seulgi said with a pout and Wooyoung hummed, leaning down to press a kiss against her lips this time around. I averted my eyes, not a fan of seeing couples kiss, only to catch Mingi already looking at me. He was expressionless once again, but he was fidgeting with his fingers, looking almost nervous. And as Wooyoung stood up straight and ruffled Seulgi’s hair affectionately, Mingi took a deep breath.
“Will you come to Outlaw this Friday?” He asked in a rush, sounding almost reluctant as his eyebrows furrowed slightly and he chewed on his lower lip. To my horror, I found my eyes fixated on his plush mouth and I gulped before I quickly averted my eyes, praying that nobody caught it.
“Yes.” I answered before Seulgi could, and nodded, smiling a little bit, “I won’t miss it.”
A beautiful smile spread on Mingi’s lips and he nodded once, looking too happy for something so little. I don’t think I’ll understand anytime soon why he gets so excited and happy when I listen to his songs or watch him perform. I’m no expert when it comes to music, my feedback is merely amateur and I’m not even a fan of his band yet.
“Cool, see you then.” And Mingi didn’t wait for Wooyoung as he turned around and walked away, steps hurried. I didn’t miss the confused glance Wooyoung and Seulgi shared before Wooyoung was off, chasing after his best friend. And maybe I would be soon able to make sense of my thoughts and feelings around Mingi, figure out what they meant and why they felt so real at times.
Monday (16:58 pm)
I hate him: hi Me: hi I hate him: would it be a lot if i asked to meet u tomorrow? Me: no, im free in the afternoon I hate him: cool, me too so uh…we can hang out in my studio? Me: or we can go to that new café with pottery I hate him: really? Me: u did say u wanted us to go… I hate him: i certainly said so i’ll pick u up around 4 Me: u don’t have to i’ll meet you there I hate him: come on, y/n…let me drive u Me: u’ve driven me around too many times by now i’ll meet u there and that’s final. I hate him: okay, boss, see ya there Me: :))
Getting here before four o’clock and having to wait in front of the cute café had no business being this nerve-wrecking. Yeah, Mingi hasn’t shown up yet—but perhaps that’s because there were still ten minutes until it’d be four—and I knew I had no reason to think he’d bail on me, but we hadn’t spoken since yesterday, when he had asked me if we could hang out. And so, waiting for him shouldn’t have had me breaking out in a sweat despite the cold weather, making me bite my lower lip harshly as I tried to smooth down the wool, green, brown, and beige patterned coat I was wearing. First of all, why the hell would I be so nervous about meeting up with Mingi alone at this cute café? He probably wanted to talk about that near kiss, and once we had that cleared, things would go back to normal—right?!
And maybe that was the reason which made me want to vomit on the sidewalk, the thought that I knew Mingi would demand answers—answers that I wasn’t yet ready to hand out. Why did I even agree to this? Because I missed him? I should have just stayed at home and done the project I’ve been procrastinating on—again. But when I heard the rumble of Mingi’s old Honda’s engine, I knew there was no turning back, catching the bus and running home to hide underneath my blanket.
As Mingi took his time to parallel park, I took a deep breath and gripped onto the strap of my tote bag harder, looking down at myself. My apricot orange sneakers matched the color of my blouse, the top two buttons out of five undone, but not showing too much skin. My blouse was tucked inside my washed out high waisted mom jeans, the black belt matching the color of my tote bag—I know black isn’t a color, I’m an arts major after all. My hair was pulled in a low ponytail just to prevent the wind from blowing it in my face, and I was thankful that I chose my wool coat as it kept me warm enough. I have opted to wear quite a few rings today, and because my neck felt too exposed, I decorated it with three necklaces of different length. I gulped hard one last time as Mingi got out of his car and took a few seconds until he managed to lock it. However, those few seconds were exactly what I needed to prepare myself to not pass out at the full sight of him.
Mingi, in true fashion to him, wore all black, except for his jeans that were a very dark shade of blue, almost black too. His turtleneck was tucked inside his jeans, a black coat with a hood keeping him warm from the cold late autumn weather. It almost made me smile upon seeing his own tote bag, black, and funnily matching mine. Except that his was plain, while mine had Claude Monet’s Water-Lily Pond painting painted on it, done by none other than yours truly, me. Mingi’s eyes were concealed by black sunglasses, and I snorted as he almost splashed himself up by stepping a little too enthusiastically into a big puddle. Two necklaces hung around his neck, reaching down his chest. A very obvious and sturdy silver cross necklace, and another longer chain that had pearls scarcely strung on it. And in true Song Mingi fashion, his rings weren’t missing, only two of his nails painted black on each hand, almost as if he didn’t have time to finish doing them. My heart racing in my chest so fast just at the mere sight of him, certainly wasn’t healthy, right?
“Hi!” I squeaked out and wished to burry myself instantly as Mingi chuckled, a very charming smile spreading onto his lips. It was a little annoying that I couldn’t see his eyes, forced to stare at his plush lips instead—let’s be real, nobody forced me, I did it because I couldn’t help myself, “The sun is quite blinding today, isn’t it?”
And of course, in good old fashion, my mouth worked before my brain would agree to saying something out loud, and my cheeks were burning as I knew Mingi saw me look at his lips. I had to divert the attention somehow, and teasing him was my best method, actually. It always worked.
“I’m trying to make a fashion statement,” Mingi grinned as he gripped the sunglasses and took them off in a very unnaturally hot way, “but hello to you too.”
“No need for a fashion statement when it’s just the two of us,” I narrowed my eyes, finding Mingi’s hair very soft and fluffy looking, almost as if he had recently washed it, and it wasn’t completely dry, “I’m not one of your fans.”
“Pity,” Mingi hummed, stepping slightly closer to me, “I thought I might just finally wove you.”
I scoffed, and as I was about to tell him off, he grabbed my tote bag and pulled me after himself, headed for the entrance of the café, “Did you have to wait long for me? Traffic was busier today, I had to take a few detours to get here in time.”
“Don’t worry,” I smiled as he opened the door for me and let me walk inside first, “I only waited half an hour for you to arrive, runway princess.”
“Runway princess?!” Mingi’s eyes bulged for a second before he started laughing loudly, making a few customers glance our way as we made it inside the café. I elbowed him in the stomach gently, not too keen of having people glare at us as he disturbed their peace.
“Don’t like the nickname?” I asked with a raised brow as we neared the front desk. The cashier had a friendly smile on her face while she greeted us as Mingi and I looked up at the menu, trying to decide what we’d like to have.
“Never said that,” Mingi answered with a chuckle as he threw me a quick glance, “it’s just surprising coming from you.”
“Why, can’t I call you a princess?” I chuckled, turning to face the cashier as I have made up my mind about what I’d like to have.
“Up until now you seemed to prefer the term ‘bro’, but I’m fine with whatever you decide on calling me, doll.” The look the cashier gave us made my cheeks flame up and I cleared my throat loudly, shooting Mingi a look that told him to shut up.
“Sorry about that,” I muttered embarrassed, smiling at the cashier, “can I get a strawberry cheesecake?”
“Sure, right away, and you, sir?” Her attention was on Mingi now, cheeks flushing the longer she looked at him. Okay, I could totally understand why. Mingi looked quite good right now, it was hard not to ogle him.
“A mint-chocolate cheesecake and a cappuccino?” Mingi hummed, eyebrows furrowed in thought as he looked down at the cashier.
“Plain cappuccino or with vanilla?” The cashier typed in our orders as she asked Mingi, averting her eyes shyly once he looked at her, pursing his lips.
“Plain,” He decided at last, turning to look at me, “are you not getting anything to drink?”
“An orange fresh will be alright.” I said as I reached inside my bag to fish around for my wallet.
“And would you also like to paint some pottery?” The cashier asked, pointing behind herself at all the displayed options. Mingi and I shared a look and I smiled as I nodded at him, making him grin from ear to ear.
“Yeah, we’ll paint some pottery too. Can I have a cup?” He asked, pointing at one on the higher shelf. It was a smaller cup, specifically made for drinking coffee. The cashier nodded and then looked at me expectantly.
“Uh, a mug will do for me.” I said and thanked her once she handed us the pottery and the paint that was used for painting these. Then, she tapped a few more on her tablet and told us the total. I opened my wallet to pay for my purchase, but Mingi had a card in his hands, the cashier already typing in the total sum for him to pay.
“Mingi,” I hissed quietly, looking at him with a frown, “what are you doing?”
“It was my idea to come here—”
“No, it wasn’t.” I cut him off, fingers curling into the scratchy fabric of his coat as I reached out to hold it, “I suggested we come here instead of going to your studio.”
Mingi sighed and pocketed his card, already having paid, then turned his body to face mine. I didn’t let go of his coat just yet, “Yeah, but when I drove you home during that downpour I asked you if you’d come here with me. So technically, it was my idea. Initially, anyways, it really was.”
“Mingi—” I started, but soon swallowed my words as he stepped closer, invading my personal space. My fingers tightened more into his coat and I gulped, suddenly feeling nervous due to our proximity. He faintly smelled of vanilla, it was a fragrance I didn’t except to smell on him.
“Can you not fight me on this one, please?” Mingi’s eyebrows slightly furrowed and his eyes softened up and I—struggled to breathe for a second as I stared up in his pleading eyes, mouth going dry. He looked—adorable like this, and I did not like the way I felt myself getting lost in his soft gaze.
“Let’s find a table.” I muttered, forcing myself out of the trance he placed on me, and grabbed my mug and the painting supplies. Mingi followed suit as he took his own cup and followed after me closely. We walked further inside the café and found a smaller table in the next room, closer towards the window. The walls were painted a faint orange and were decorated by white stripes that created abstract shapes. The chandeliers were white and hung low, the place well-lit for those who wished to paint pottery.
I placed the things in my hands on the table carefully, and then discarded my coat on the back of my chair and my tote bag by the leg of the table, pulling my chair out for myself. Mingi followed suit, however, he managed to almost send his cup tumbling to the floor when he took his seat. His eyes were wide as he just barely caught the cup, and I giggled as I watched him while opening the box that held all the paint. Thankfully, the table was spacious enough to harbor both our pottery and paints as the cashier brought out our delicacies. She threw Mingi a lasting look before she hurried back to the front desk, glancing our way at times.
“This is going to be a tough one.” Mingi said before scooping up a bit of his cheesecake with his little spoon.
“Why?” I asked with a chuckle, choosing a thin brush to start painting some flowers on my mug. My cheesecake could wait.
“Because I’m literally sat at a table with an arts major, having to decorate some cup by painting.” Mingi sounded stressed and I chuckled as I looked up at him, amused by his expression. His hair fell in his eyes a bit, and I found myself absentmindedly reaching over the table to brush it to the side. Almost as if realizing at the same time what I had done, we both froze. It felt like time stilled around us as I watched Mingi with a gaping mouth, slowly but surely, my cheeks becoming the color of a fire hydrant. But Mingi wasn’t better off as he bit his bottom lip, averting his eyes shyly as his cheeks turned the faint color of pink. Clearing my throat and accidentally choking as I hastily pulled my hand back, I averted my eyes and fought for my life to not choke. Thank God the orange juice was right there, I quickly took three large gulps.
“Th—thanks.” Mingi stuttered, staring at the table as he licked his lips, “Uh, it’s gotten long, my hair, I mean, I have to cut it when I get the time.”
“Yeah.” I nodded, grabbing my mug and chewing on my bottom lip in embarrassment—God, could the Earth swallow me up right now? Why the hell did I do that?! “Yeah.”
“Do you think I should change it up a little?” I paused as I had dipped my brush in red paint, and slowly looked up at Mingi, “Do something fun with it—like going blonde?”
“I hate blonde hair.” I blurted out before I could stop myself. Nice one, idiot. Yunho was blonde while we were together, and thus, yeah, I’ve hated blondes ever since. And to be fair—and this is not me shitting on my ex—but that hair color did not suit Yunho at all.
“Oh, noted.” Mingi whispered, pouting a little. I sighed and looked up at the ceiling, hating myself for the weird atmosphere I have created.
“Mingi, you can do whatever you want with your hair.” I spoke up, leaning down to try and look him in the eyes as he was busy staring at the table, “My opinion shouldn’t matter. It’s your hair. Go crazy with it, have fun, try out something new. Really.”
“But do you think it would suit me?” Mingi was still pouting as he finally looked up at me, looking quite crestfallen. My eyebrows furrowed and I tried to imagine him with blonde hair. He was quite blessed with his skin complex as most colors looked good on him, but perhaps I preferred Mingi with dark hair—black hair, more specifically. Like he had it right now. He looked—good. Handsome, even. Completely gorgeous. Fuck.
“I think it would suit you.” I settled on saying that. He didn’t have to know my train of thought, like at all. Mingi hummed in appreciation, and I watched as he reached inside his tote bag, pulling out a case that held his glasses. He took it out of the case and put it on, pushing it up on the bridge of his nose. He grinned when he looked at me and I chuckled, shaking my head as I looked down at my mug, finally starting to decorate it.
“There goes the cool, mysterious, hot celebrity act.” I teased under my breath, not expecting Mingi to hear me. But he did, and he started laughing, giving me a cheeky grin.
“Not quite a celebrity yet, but at least you admit I am hot.” Of course he was smirking as I gave him a deadpanned look, about to argue him on his statement, but he didn’t let me as he continued talking, “By the way, let’s exchange our cups when we are done. The mug will be mine and the cup will be yours.”
I tried to fight the smile off my lips, “So that you get the artwork of a talented artist for free to sell for an outrageous price later on when I’m famous?”
“I fear you have misjudged my character, doll.” Mingi’s eyes narrowed playfully, but there was truth to his words. I might just have misjudged his character.
“I still think you’re arrogant and selfish.”
“Of course you do, didn’t except anything less from you.” Mingi winked and then looked down, his cheesecake forgotten as he started decorating his cup, tongue just barely sticking out as he concentrated hard on whatever he had in mind to paint onto the cup. I chuckled and shook my head before focusing on my own mug, the silence that’s settle around us comfortable, as always.
Mingi and I were the quietest table in the café as we worked in silence diligently in, painting our own pottery. Mingi, at times, would hum along quietly to the songs that were played on the radio. Despite his cup being smaller and easier to paint, I finished painting mine before him, and so, I took the time to savor my cheesecake even if it had gotten warm and a little too soft. Mingi was hunched over in his seat, glasses low on the bridge of his long nose, with his full lips either pursed or with the bottom one bitten as his eyebrows would furrow every time he almost made a mistake. It was a funny sight, and I grabbed my phone without thinking much, and snapped a few pictures of him, leaning lower and even closer to his face to get the funny angles, all while Mingi remained oblivious to it. I chuckled as I looked at the pictures I had taken of him, looking at him when I felt eyes on me.
“What’s so funny?” He asked curiously, eyeing my phone for a second.
“You.” I chuckled and stuck my tongue out as Mingi rolled his eyes, leaning back in his chair as he heaved a long sigh.
“I’m finally done.” He grinned and I looked down at his cup, taking in the yellow chicks he had painted quite—clumsily. Well, not all of us had the skills of a painter—not that it was an issue or anything—it’s just that it’s been long since I had seen someone have the skills of a—kindergartner, “It’s pretty sick, huh?”
I bit my lower lip to stop myself from giggling and nodded with my eyebrows furrowed, “I’d give it a seventy out of a hundred mark.”
“Hey! That’s too low!” Mingi said, looking offended. I chuckled before shrugging.
“You’ll have to work on your skills for a higher mark.”
“Fine, next time you come to the studio, I’ll make you sing.” Mingi raised his eyebrows, making me narrow my eyes at him playfully.
“Oh, I didn’t know we are in a competition.”
“We weren’t, until now.” He winked and then stood, grabbing my mug and his own cup carefully as he took it to the front desk for drying. I gathered the items we had used to paint the pottery with to place them back in the box, and couldn’t help it but sneak a glance at Mingi. He was leaned up against the front counter, grinning widely at the cashier as she spoke to him, using her hands for big gestures as she was probably explaining something. My eyes narrowed as Mingi leaned slightly closer to her, only to detach himself from the front desk and walk back towards our table. I looked away and busied myself with my glass of orange juice.
“So, we’ll get them delivered to our houses once they are dry and all.” He said with a smile, sitting down, “I hope you don’t mind I gave her your address too.”
“I don’t.” I muttered, chewing on the straw for a second, “I didn’t think you’d know my address.”
“Well,” Mingi flattened his hands on the surface of the table, “I’ve been to your house twice now. I think it’s only right I remember your address, doll.”
“Right,” I muttered, “you’ve been to my house.”
Mingi’s eyebrows furrowed, and I figured he didn’t like the tone of my voice. But before I could correct myself and explain that I had nothing against that, he spoke up, “Y/N, I—I didn’t mean to scare you or—I don’t know—make you think that I want anything from you. I mean—we are friends, and I respect you as a woman and as a friend, and I know we almost—kissed. But I—I don’t want you to think that I’m playing some sort of game with you to get—to get in your pants. I’m your friend. And even if I wasn’t, I still wouldn’t do that to you.”
Hearing him say all that felt wrong. I didn’t deserve any explanation from him. I was the one that’s overreacted that day, and Mingi was the one that deserved an explanation and apology from me for the way I have acted. I knew I couldn’t completely open up to him right now, that some parts of the truth had to be omitted today, but he also deserved to know why I had pulled back. And I wanted him to understand that it wasn’t his fault for the way I reacted to everything.
“Mingi,” I offered him a small smile and gripped my empty glass for some support, “If you think you are the reason why I ignored you, please, stop thinking that. It’s—we both leaned in, okay? We were both about to kiss each other, it’s not like you initiated it or forced me to do something I didn’t want to. And nothing even happened, for God’s sake. I reacted that way because I—”
When I paused, Mingi’s eyebrows furrowed, and he leaned over the table, gently poking my hand with his ring clad fore-finger, “You don’t have to tell me anything if you’re not comfortable sharing it, Y/N.”
“But I want you to know this, Mingi.” I averted my eyes and took a deep breath, embracing myself for what I was about to tell him, “I had a boyfriend back in high-school who completely broke my heart, shattered it into pieces. And I know that happened a long time ago, and yes, I am over him, but I—I am scared people will treat me like he had treated me. I’m scared that if I let you close, you’ll just—leave. Like he did. And I know ignoring you for days was very shitty of me and I shouldn’t have done that—because quite frankly, Mingi, you deserve better—I just didn’t know what to do. I needed a few days to myself, to figure things out. It’s a bad excuse, but it’s the truth, and I think you deserve to know it. Since we are friends.”
Mingi’s face conveyed no emotion for a few seconds and I gulped, feeling nervous all of a sudden. Did he figure it out now? That I was talking about Yunho? That maybe I have started feeling something for him too, for Mingi? Would he stand up and leave? But to my surprise, a wide smile stretched onto his lips and he hummed, adjusting his glasses on his nose.
“Thank you for trusting me, it means a lot that you told me all that.” I bit my bottom lip, looking down at the table abashedly, “And I was never mad at you for ignoring me. I completely understand you, Y/N, and for the record, I have zero intentions of leaving you. And your ex is a fucking asshole for breaking your heart like that, tell me who he is and I’ll beat him up when I cross paths with him.”
There was nothing funny about what Mingi had said, especially since he was talking about his best friend, but the comically tough look on his face made me snort loudly as I shielded my mouth with my hand, trying to stop myself from laughing too loudly. Mingi started grinning like an idiot, his giggles deep, and making something coil in my stomach. When has Song Mingi become adorable instead of annoying?
“I doubt you’d want to kick his ass once you find out who he is…” I grimaced once that was out of my mouth, regretting it instantly. What was it about today that I couldn’t keep my thoughts and mouth in check? It was turning really frustrating.
“So, you plan on telling me one day?” Mingi wriggled his eyebrows, making me snort, “Like real besties gossiping and shit.”
“You never fail to make me cringe when you call us besties, Mingi.” I shook my head, taking a glance at my wrist watch. Oh, the time had flown away, it was well past five now, and the sun was going down. I’d probably have to head home soon to have dinner with my mother. I was becoming hungry too.
“Well, that’s what we are so…” He cleared his throat before slowly standing up, making me look up at him, “Did you know today we’re celebrating the Festival of Light?”
“Nope, I had no idea.” I shook my head, standing up too as Mingi wore his coat, “I don’t follow the events our city organizes.”
“Pity, it’s really pretty.” Mingi pouted, waiting for me as I grabbed my tote bag and pocketed my phone, “Should we check it out?”
“I mean…maybe?” I shrugged and Mingi beckoned me over as he crossed his arm with mine, making me chuckle as I looked up at him. He wasn’t much taller than me, but his sneakers had a thick sole and they made him even taller, “Where is this festival held at?”
“Just down the street, at the Citadel.” Mingi smiled as he led the way out of the café, waving at the barista as she blushed again, making me chuckle as I subconsciously nuzzled up against Mingi’s side, the air chilly as the sun had set by now.
“That barista totally has a crush on you.” I found myself saying as we walked down the sidewalk, trying to avoid crashing into the people that came towards us. Yeah, there certainly was an event on-going in the city, otherwise you wouldn’t see so many people out and about around this time. Everyone preferred staying inside after the sun had set, not keen of the cold nights.
“You think so?” Mingi mused, bottom lip jutting out as he narrowly avoided a child that was running around, “I didn’t notice.”
“You must be really dense then.” I snorted, eyebrows furrowing as I looked up at him, “She was constantly blushing, and she was totally looking at you with hearts in her eyes.”
“How do you know when someone is looking at you with heart eyes?” Mingi’s question threw me off, and I detached myself from his side, clearing my throat as I looked ahead, pushing my hands in my pockets. He was warm, it made me realize as the cold bit at my skin now that I wasn’t nuzzled up by his side anymore.
“Well, they have this look in their eyes, you know? It’s warm, and soft, and it lasts.” I explained, feelings my cheeks heat up, “And their eyes always linger on you when you aren’t watching them. It’s like…puppy eyes, I suppose? I wouldn’t actually know, Mingi, nobody’s ever looked at me like that.”
When there was no response, I looked back to find Mingi looking at me intensely. My eyebrows furrowed as we have arrived to the Citadel, the gates open for the visitors of the festival. The place was packed, this wouldn’t be so fun anymore. I would’ve turned around and walked back home if I didn’t see how excited Mingi was when I agreed to come check it out.
“There’s lots of people here.” Mingi muttered, and then walked closer to me as I led the way inside, a little baffled by his reaction to my answer. I just merely gave an answer based on my beliefs. It was him that was acting weird now. But as I looked at him, I could see it in his eyes that he didn’t want to talk about this topic anymore, that he wanted us to drop the subject. His last comment was a way to veer the conversation in a different direction. What was it about us today making everything weird? I sighed and just walked further inside, trying to avoid the big crowd which seemed almost impossible as it stretched on and on. The Citadel, however, was beautiful as it was coated in darkness, only the little paper lamps and fairy lights illuminating the place. It had a certain aura to it, almost romantic, and I soon found myself smiling as we walked down the cobblestone path, still trying to avoid people and stick close to each other’s sides. The air was chilly but the walls of the Citadel did a great job at keeping the breeze out, and the crowd certainly kept the place warmer than it was outside the stone walls.
I found myself admiring the décor in wonder, my mouth hanging open as I took in all the little lamps placed down on the ground, following the cobblestone paths, illuminating our way. It was truly beautiful, it almost felt like the scene was taken out of a fairytale. I found myself filled with excitement and happiness as I turned to grin at Mingi.
“This is so beautiful!” I giggled, absentmindedly grabbing the sleeve of his coat and dragging him away from the path and into the dying grass as there was a panel covered with paper, and people were writing on it. Mingi remained silent, but as I searched around for a pen or pencil, I felt him watching me, “What, do you not want to write something?”
“If you manage to find a marker or pen, I will, sure.” He said with a shrug, adjusting the strap of his tote bag before he pushed his hands deep in his pockets. I chuckled and looked around for a marker, but it was hard to see it in the darkness whether they were laying around in the grass or not. To my surprise, a little girl standing next to me looked up at me with a small smile on her lips, and offered me her purple-coloured marker, saying she was done with her drawing. I thanked her with a chuckle and turned to face Mingi with a grin.
“I found one!” Mingi chuckled and took the marker from my hands, being able to reach high up where the paper was still empty, due to his height. The panel was illuminated from the inside so you could actually see what was written on the paper. I watched him as he wrote on the paper, hesitating for a second, before he stepped back and handed me the marker. I raised up on my tip toes curiously, and craned my neck to see what he’s written. ‘The moon is beautiful tonight.’
I felt a smile spread onto my lips as I looked back at Mingi, who’s expression was serious and almost sad-looking as he adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his tall nose. I craned my neck back once more to gaze at the dark sky, at the moon, and indeed, there she was, beautiful and shining brightly. It was a new moon. Taking a swift glance at Mingi, I raised back on my tip toes and stood close to the panel, reaching up, just underneath Mingi’s writing. Thankfully, I could reach just bellow it, and I grinned as I quickly drew a new moon, adding a little shading to it and dents as well, creating the illusion of a real moon. Mingi remained silent as I took a step back, admiring our work. I handed the marker to another child as I fished my phone out of my pocket and snapped a picture quickly of our artwork.
“The moon turned out beautifully.” Mingi commented once we had stepped away from the panel to let others draw too, headed back onto the cobblestone path.
“Still, it’s not as beautiful as the real one, but I tried my best.” I chuckled as I crossed my arms in front of my chest for a second, avoiding a man as he wasn’t looking in front of himself as he raced down the path. Mingi threw him a displeased look before looking down at me.
“Your drawings and paintings are always beautiful, Y/N.” Mingi said and I found myself blushing, thankful that it was so dark he wouldn’t be able to see it. I uncrossed my arms and turned my body a little to face him. There was music coming from one path, the one which led to the southern part of the Citadel.
“Are you nervous about Friday?” I found myself asking him as Mingi veered us towards where the music was coming from. He looked at me for a second, and then shook his head.
“I’m rarely nervous when we have to perform.” He said nonchalantly, the back of his hand brushing lightly against mine. My heart did a somersault against my ribcage, but I ignored it.
“Oh, you’re such a cool guy.” I teased him with narrowed eyes, making Mingi chuckle.
“I rarely get nervous, to be honest, even less when it comes to performing.” He hummed, looking up at the dark sky for a second, “I trust myself and my bandmates that everything will go well, so, there’s no actual reason to feel nervous.”
“But I’ll be there on Friday, that still doesn’t make you feel nervous?” My question was meant to be teasing, part of our playful banter, but the way Mingi gulped and quickly averted his eyes told me that perhaps I hit the nail spot-on. Well, now I have turned things awkward again. I sighed loudly, chewing on my bottom lip as Mingi remained silent, the two of us walking down the narrow path as the music became louder as we were nearing the stage. Jazz music was playing, the lady who was singing had a powerful and smooth voice that carried over the crowd neatly. There were a few people dancing in the crowd.
“Perhaps having you there will make me nervous.” Mingi’s voice was barely above a whisper and I tensed when I felt his pinkie brush against my own, making me clench my hand into a fist. But a very quiet voice inside my head demanded me to accept Mingi’s subtle request, and willing my heart to stop hammering so hard in my chest, I relaxed my hand and slowly slipped it into Mingi’s. If he stopped walking for a milli-second, I didn’t say anything about it, and he also ignored it. His grip turned firm as he intertwined our fingers together, gently pulling me closer into his side as he smiled at a mother who apologised for his son almost running into us.
I gulped and kept my eyes ahead of me, too nervous to look at Mingi. Holding his hand like this meant nothing in particular, but it was a nice feeling. It made my cheeks warms and heart race. And I didn’t have to look at Mingi to know he was smiling like crazy, his cheeks just as red as mine as we came to a stop behind the dancing people.
Have I started falling for Song Mingi?
『It's you, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh
I'm just saying it's you, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
You, ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh
You're what I've been chasing
Show me where my days went』
It also delves into her relationship with Mallick, whose existence, I believe, is an obvious literary reference to an ancient Roman play read by only me and three other people currently alive. I translated relevant passages and included them in my work. I got understimulated around page 8 so I did take a break to pierce myself in the same spot that I believe Mallick would have a piercing. The other Sister (1k Special)
Daemon Targaryen x Reader
(1k Special)
Warning: infidelity (?), jealousy, Daemon 😎, not proofread 🥲
A/N: Aaaand I'm back (kinda) – was I even gone? 👀 Sorry it took me so long – I've been busy with work and my thesis but I've missed writing and sharing stories on here! This will definitely have a part 2 (maybe even 3 who knows)! Enjoy reading and let me know what you think!
PS: Do you know which novel/movie this was inspired by?
Gripping onto the marble of your washbasin you bit your lip in despair, angry tears dripping into the water as you watched the droplets cause small ripples in the water you had used to wash your face. Your hold on the cold surface hardened – your fingers turning white until your wet skin slipped on the smooth surface and you lost your grip completely. And with it your resolve not to cry. Ugly sobs forced their way out of your trembling lips as you let your head fall forward, your forehead almost touching the water. You let yourself cry and scream – what an ugly sight you must have been.
Present:
You smiled brightly as your eyes met your older sister’s – both of you clad in beautiful dresses. She grinned at you cheekily before her hand reached out to help you out of the carriage – she had always been there to help you even if there had been other people to assist you – she’d rather be the one to help you. Slinging your arm around hers you both walk towards your parents before you are greeted by the Lord Hand of the King. As the older man leads your family into the Red Keep and through the endless halls of the imposing building you lost yourself in the grandeur of the architecture. Your eyes tried to take in as much as possible as you blindly followed – trusting your sister to lead you to your destination. After what felt like hours you walked into a big Hall before everyone came to a halt – your sister’s lack of movement pulling you into a standstill as well. Subtly tugging on your arm your sister brought you back to the present as your eyes took in the people around you. You almost gasped – barely managing to gather yourself – before you curtsied along with your sister. Lifting your head you felt your heartbeat quicken when your eyes briefly met the prince’s – he was intimidatingly handsome, his gaze intense. But unfortunately, the magical moment didn’t last long as his eyes immediately settled on your older sister. You felt your heart clench as you felt your sister shift in excitement her soft giggle resonating in your ear. Oh no. The realization of why you had come all the way to Kings Landing dawned on you – your sister and the prince were to be betrothed. You stood no chance.
The remainder of the day passed by in a blur – the beautiful castle suddenly seemed so dull as you watched your sister talk to prince Daemon. You wanted to leave – to push your chair back and waltz out of the huge hall before disappearing forever. But where to? And even if you knew where to – you didn’t want to make a fool of yourself. So, instead of leaving you silently sat in your chair as you pushed the food on your plate around. Your appetite long gone. A sudden hand on your right arm made you jump in your seat. Whipping your head around you were face to face with the cheeky smile of princess Rhaenyra. You felt your face heat up at the proximity.
“You want to leave this suffocating hall?” She raised her brow suggestively, the corner of her lips still pulled into a cheeky smile. You stared at the princess at a loss for words – she seemed nice enough and was around your age. Stealing one last glance at the prince and your sister you sighed in defeat before nodding meekly. And that was everything it took for Rhaenyra to stand up and excuse the both of you from the evening – there was a lot she wanted to show you she said. King Viserys chuckled at his daughter before nodding approvingly and just as you were about to stand up the princess pulled you out of your chair and out of the hall.
That is how you came to befriend the beautiful Targaryen princess. That same night you snuck back to your room with the help of Rhaenyra, giggling softly as you wished her a good night before closing the door softly.
“Must have been a fun night, I’m assuming.” Your sister’s voice came from behind you. You shrieked as you turned around with big eyes. She was sitting in her bed, watching you with a wide smile. Pushing yourself off the door you walked towards your own bed, letting yourself fall into the soft bedding with a sigh. “The princess seems very nice.” Is all you said – is all you could say before your sister started talking about her encounter with the prince dreamily. You pretended to listen quietly as you stood up from the bed to get ready for the night Occasionally nodding whenever you felt like your sister expected a reaction from you. You had never been necessarily jealous – you never had reason to. Your parents loved your sister and you unconditionally and never gave anyone any reason to feel less. You admired your sister – you always have. She was beautiful, kind, elegant and so protective of you. Why should you have been jealous of her? That night was the first time you noticed the difference between your sister and you. That night you looked at your sister with different eyes as she laughed along the prince you had heard so many stories about – about the prince you had dreamed of marrying almost every night. That night marked the night you’d distance yourself bit by bit from your innocent sister.
Days passed before the betrothal was announced publicly – followed by the news of the feast to celebrate the news. You sat beside the princess while you watched the maids run around the castle. “Are you listening? Hey!” Rhaenyra poked you impatiently with a frown on your face. You just smiled sheepishly at her before muttering a soft apology.
“It does not matter … it seems my dear friend is lost in her thoughts. Again.” She looked at you pointedly, a smile breaking out on her face. “You seem distracted. Is everything alright?” Her brows furrowed in worry as she leaned closer to you, the bright smile on her face almost gone. You sighed. You couldn’t possibly tell her that you were jealous of your sister. So instead, you just shrugged your shoulder.
“Apparently my friend is also mute now.”
You gasped in mock offence as you stared at her before the both of you broke out into laughter. After a while you broke your silence. “I don’t know … maybe I’m just homesick.” You knew that your excuse was lame, and you also knew that Rhaenyra wasn’t convinced – she was too smart for that. But thankfully she just nodded before clasping her hands together. “You know what? I know what will cheer you up!”
***
“When you said that you knew something that would cheer me up – this is definitely not what I was expecting!” You shrieked as you took a few steps back – away from the huge and potentially dangerous dragon.
Rhaenyra only rolled her eyes, “Come on … stop whining!” she laughed as she petted Syrax who eyed you curiously. “Syrax is a darling you need not be scared of her!” She turned around with a smirk, tilting her head in expectation. “Come on.” She sung as she reached one of her hands out, wiggling her fingers impatiently.
Groaning silently, you forced your way to step towards her – you couldn’t win against her. She had a dragon after all. When you were close enough, she grabbed onto your arm and pulled you closer. And that is how you befriended a dragon.
***
The days passed until they turned into weeks. You always felt your sister’ eyes on you, turning sad whenever you avoided her once again. She missed you terribly – you were sure of that – yet you could not find it in you to feel bad for her. Your heart still ached, and you were blinded by your jealousy. The morning of their wedding you stared at the ceiling with burning eyes – sleep did not find you that night. But it didn’t matter. Soon you’d be going back home and leave this place and your heartbreak behind. The only person you’d miss was your new best friend. You got ready for the wedding with the help of the maids. You were dressed in a beautiful deep blue gown and your hair was put into a half updo. As you stared at your reflection in the mirror you had to bite your lip to keep yourself from crying. What was it that your sister had that you did not? Willing those thoughts away you stood up from the stool and smoothed out your dress before a knock brought you out of your daydream. Your sister had requested to speak with you. Your shoulders tensed as you followed the maid to your sister’s temporary chambers. As you entered the room you were overwhelmed by the smell of expensive oils and the many maids and servants running around the room. And there, in front of the mirror, stood your sister in her wedding gown. Your breath hitched. She looked absolutely beautiful. You clenched your jaw as the traitorous voices in your head told you that it could have been you in that dress.
“Everyone, please leave. I wish to speak with my sister alone.” Your sister’s soft voice caught your attention as your eyes found hers. You walked deeper into the room as the maids rushed out until you stopped a few steps away from her. After the door fell shut your sister’s smile turned sad. She closed the distance between you and took hold of your hands as she stared into your eyes. It took everything in you not to flinch at the contact. The last time you had been close to your sister had been a while. A small part of you had missed her closeness.
“I wanted to talk to you before it is too late – you know how chaotic celebrations can get.” She laughed softly. “I feel like we haven’t talked in a while … I’ve missed you so much.” Her voice trembled as her eye turned wet. The sight of your sister’s teary eyes tugged at your heart, yet the bitterness simmered underneath, urging you to keep your guard up. You looked away briefly, gathering yourself, then finally met her gaze, struggling to keep your tone steady.
“You missed me?” you replied, trying to mask the hurt. “It seems like you’ve had plenty of company lately.” Your words came out softer than you intended, betraying the sting of jealousy you’d tried to hide.
Her face fell, a look of confusion and hurt flashing across her features. She squeezed your hands tighter, her brows drawing together as she searched your face.
“Of course I missed you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “You’re my sister, my closest friend. Don’t… don’t you feel the same? A-Are you not happy for me?”
Your sister's words hung in the air, but you forced a soft, polite smile, one that did not reach your eyes. You tucked away the hurt that twisted in your chest, burying it deeper where she couldn’t see. If she wanted to believe nothing had changed between you, then so be it. You would let her believe that.
"Of course I’ve missed you," you replied, your voice light and smooth, as if this moment meant little. "I'm happy for you. You've found a place here… with him. That’s what truly matters."
Her face softened in relief, as if she’d been bracing for an outburst. Instead, she seemed comforted by your calm. She squeezed your hands once more, her smile returning, brighter and more hopeful this time.
"I’m so glad to hear you say that," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. "It means the world to me, truly. I’ve felt so lost here without you close to me." She paused, reaching to brush an imaginary wrinkle from the sleeve of your dress, her eyes glassy with unshed tears. "Promise me you'll write to me once you're back home?”
You nodded, your smile still perfectly poised. “Of course, I’ll write,” you said, though the thought of pouring your heart onto parchment felt hollow and impossible.
Her face softened, a flicker of sadness beneath her joy. “I know things won’t be the same,” she continued, her voice more wistful now, as if speaking to a memory instead of the person standing before her. “But I do hope we’ll be close again someday, like we used to be.”
You grit your teeth as you simply inclined your head, brushing your hands free of hers under the pretense of smoothing your gown. “Enjoy your day, sister. You deserve it,” you murmured, forcing your voice to remain even before turning gracefully, giving her one last smile as you walked out of the room, feeling her gaze linger on you until the door closed softly behind you.
The sound of laughter and clinking goblets filled the air as you wandered through the grand halls, desperately needing a reprieve from the crowd and festivities. The wedding was in full swing, with guests reveling in the union of your sister and Prince Daemon, their smiles radiant as they danced together, utterly oblivious to your absence.
Your steps slowed as you neared a small alcove off the main hall, hidden by flickering torches casting warm shadows against the stone. Voices carried from around the corner, low and animated. It was Daemon, unmistakable in both his voice and the easy arrogance in his tone, surrounded by a few lords who seemed eager to hear every word.
“Congratulations prince Daemon! Your bride is stunning,” one of the lords said, chuckling, his voice carrying a hint of admiration. “But I must ask, Prince Daemon — what of her younger sister? Was she not to your liking?”
You froze in place, heart pounding as their conversation continued. You pressed yourself against the wall, trying to stay hidden, as you tried to listen to the rest of the conversation.
Daemon let out a low laugh, tinged with amusement. “She’s … not my type, let’s say,” he replied, his voice as smooth as silk but laced with something that stung. “Too young, too innocent.” He paused, his tone growing more dismissive. “Naive, even.”
One of the lords let out a knowing chuckle, leaning closer to the prince. “Perhaps she’ll mature into a beauty like her sister. But she does have her charms, does she not?”
Daemon gave a small shrug, as if brushing off the suggestion entirely. “Perhaps, though she lacks her sister’s allure. She’s … well, sweet, I suppose, but childlike.” He took a sip from his goblet, a hint of a smirk curling at the corner of his lips. “I much prefer my wife’s look — fair, almost Targaryen in appearance. She looks the part, wouldn’t you agree?”
A ripple of laughter passed among the men, and Daemon’s voice dropped, though you still caught his next words.
“Besides,” he added, “the younger one would’ve withered under the scrutiny of court. I need someone with a bit more … resilience.”
His words cut through you – your chest felt tight as your breathing grew shallow. All the admiration, all the dreams you’d once dared to entertain about him evaporated in an instant, replaced by a raw bitterness. Not only did you not stand a chance with him but you were humiliated in front of the other lords – of potential suitors!
You didn’t wait to hear more. Gathering your skirts, you slipped away from the alcove, careful not to make a sound. Once out of earshot, you allowed yourself a shaky breath, steadying yourself against the wall. You wanted to hide in your bed and cry until you could no more – but instead you gathered yourself. You told yourself you’d leave this place soon enough, return to the quiet comfort of home, far from Daemon’s cruel words and your sister’s perfect smile. And this time, you’d leave without a second glance, carrying only the lessons this place had burned into your heart. You wouldn’t forget this feeling — it would harden you, make you stronger. No longer would you be the naïve, starry-eyed girl you had once been.
Straightening, you forced yourself to lift your chin, feeling a strange sort of clarity settle over you. You took one last steadying breath and then turned away, disappearing into the shadows of the hall with your dignity intact, vowing that you’d never again let your heart be so easily wounded.
Years passed, each one carrying you further from the girl you had once been in King’s Landing. The life you led now was one of careful cultivation and quiet growth. After leaving the capital, you’d poured yourself into study, becoming well-versed in courtly politics, the arts, and the languages that befitted a noble lady. You learned to sharpen your wit, hold your ground in conversation, and wield grace like a shield. The memory of Daemon’s careless dismissal haunted you at times, but it no longer stung like it once had. Instead, it had steeled you, hardened your resolve to never again let anyone consider you naïve or inconsequential.
Although you corresponded with your sister, your letters remained polite and carefully worded, a dutiful obligation rather than an openhearted exchange. You knew she had her new life and that the bond you’d once shared was forever altered. In contrast, your friendship with Princess Rhaenyra blossomed over the years; her letters often brought genuine laughter, her words playful and filled with affection. She confided in you about court gossip, the mounting pressures she faced as heir, and her own private struggles. In Rhaenyra, you found not only a true friend but an ally who valued you for who you had become.
One day, while going over correspondence in your family’s study, you received a letter sealed with the familiar crest of House Targaryen. It was brief, but the news within jolted you.
Your sister had given birth.
A girl. Healthy, strong, and full of life. But there was no joy in Daemon’s heart for a daughter, it seemed. According to the letter, he had expected a son, an heir he could shape and command, and his disappointment was already palpable. And more troubling still, your sister had endured a brutal, drawn-out birth, leaving her weakened and in dire need of support.
The words gnawed at you. A part of you still held the bitterness of old wounds, but another part—the part that remembered her as the sister who had once helped you out of the carriage and whispered childhood secrets in your ear—felt a pang of sympathy. She was alone, vulnerable, and perhaps needed you now more than she ever had.
Rhaenyra arrived at your family’s estate that afternoon, and the two of you took a long walk through the gardens. The letter remained clutched in your hand, your thoughts a tangled mix of reluctance and lingering affection.
“Your sister’s birth was difficult,” Rhaenyra said, glancing at you with a mix of concern and knowing. “My uncle is disappointed, then?” There was a hint of scorn in her tone. “He expects a male heir, as if that child’s worth is tied to his own ambitions.”
“Yes,” you said softly. “And my sister... She had a difficult birth and is left weakened. I suppose she needs support, though…” You hesitated, trying to put your own conflicted feelings into words.
Rhaenyra turned to you, her gaze steady. “She’s your sister. I don’t know what you’ll find when you see her again, but I do know you’ve grown far beyond whatever you left behind in King’s Landing.”
You looked away, gathering your thoughts. Rhaenyra had always known you best, and she understood what it took for you to move past your pain. “It’s hard,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper. “I’m not the same person I was back then. I don’t think I can just go and pretend nothing’s changed.”
Rhaenyra took your hand in hers, her expression gentle yet resolute. “Then don’t,” she said simply. “Go as you are now. You’re no longer the innocent girl who idolized him.” She smirked slightly. “And whatever my uncle sees when you walk through those halls, he’s not the one who defines you. You’ve done that yourself.”
The words settled over you, and a sense of clarity began to form. Rhaenyra was right—you weren’t returning to King’s Landing as the girl Daemon had once so easily dismissed, or the sister who’d been hurt and left behind. You were a woman with your own strength, dignity, and purpose. And perhaps, seeing your sister now would allow you to finally let go of the past, to redefine what your family—and even Daemon—meant to you.
Rhaenyra took your hand with a determined glint in her eye. “Come,” she said, a smile spreading across her lips, “we’ll go together. Besides, I know someone who would love to make this journey with us.” She tilted her head in the direction of where Syrax rested, her scales glinting like molten gold in the sunlight.
Your heart quickened. It wasn’t often that you flew with Rhaenyra, but today it felt right, a fierce and bold return to King’s Landing.
Moments later, you stood before Syrax, her amber eyes regarding you with curiosity. Rhaenyra mounted first, turning to extend a hand toward you. With a steadying breath, you took it, climbing up behind her. The familiar warmth and solidity of the dragon beneath you sent a thrill through your veins.
As Syrax took to the skies, the world below melted into a blur, the wind whipping past your face, filling you with a heady mix of freedom and anticipation. The Red Keep loomed on the horizon, and though the memories it held were still etched in your heart, you were ready to return.
The dragon soared over the city, its powerful wings casting shadows over the spires and rooftops of King’s Landing. You felt your resolve strengthen with every beat of Syrax’s wings. This time, you would face your past with an unyielding heart, ready to carve out your own place within the castle walls, no longer bound by the innocence you had left behind.
And with Rhaenyra by your side, you knew that whatever awaited you in the Red Keep, you would face it with the strength and grace that had become yours alone.
Your sister’s bedchamber was filled with a quiet sense of tension and weariness. The curtains were drawn, keeping out the bright midday sun, and the room was cast in a soft, dim light. She lay in the center of the grand bed, looking pale and fragile against the rich, embroidered pillows. Her golden hair, though still lovely, was limp and faintly tangled, her once-vibrant complexion dulled from the strain of childbirth. The sight of her lying there, so vulnerable, stirred a mixture of sympathy and something more complicated within you.
“Sister,” she greeted you softly, managing a weak but warm smile. She looked at you with a gaze that seemed to reach across the distance the years had created between you. “Thank you for coming.”
You nodded, stepping forward to take her hand in yours, noticing the thinness of her fingers. “Of course,” you replied gently, the words feeling almost too light for the weight of your shared history.
“I wish I could greet you properly,” she murmured, glancing down as if ashamed. “It feels like all my strength has left me.”
“You’ve been through a lot,” you said quietly. “You don’t have to do anything right now but rest and recover.”
She nodded, giving you a grateful look, though her expression faltered as her eyes clouded with some unspoken thought. “It was a girl,” she said, voice faintly trembling. “Not the heir Daemon had wanted.”
You felt a pang of anger on her behalf. She had risked her life to bring this child into the world, and yet the news was marred by Daemon’s disappointment. “She’s still your child, and she’ll have your strength,” you said, squeezing her hand gently. “That’s worth far more than any title.”
A sad, tired smile tugged at her lips, and her eyes softened as she looked at you. “Look at you … you have grown into a beautiful lady. You seem so much stronger now,” she whispered, her voice full of admiration. “I missed you all these years. I know I have no right to ask it, but… will you stay? At least until I’m well enough to manage on my own?”
There was a deep vulnerability in her gaze that cut through the old resentment, a reminder that she, too, had faced her own battles. You nodded, giving her hand another reassuring squeeze. “I’ll stay,” you promised. “Whatever you need.”
Before she could respond, the door opened behind you. Turning, you saw Daemon entering the room, his face unreadable as he took in the sight of you beside your sister’s bed.
“Uncle,” you said, nodding in acknowledgment, your voice cool but civil.
As Daemon’s gaze traveled over you, you could feel the intensity of his attention, lingering on every detail. His eyes traced the graceful curve of your neck, lingering at the hollow of your throat where your pulse beat steadily, betraying none of the mixed emotions churning within. His look dipped lower, pausing at the delicate lines of your collarbones framed elegantly by the neckline of your gown. You felt the weight of his gaze settle there, as though he was savoring each small change in you since he’d last seen you.
A subtle heat spread over your skin as his eyes lingered, taking in the soft contours of your waist, the quiet strength in the way you carried yourself, the sense of calm restraint woven into every movement. The longer he looked, the more evident it became that he noticed every detail—the faint glow in your cheeks, the natural elegance of your posture, the way the tailored gown accentuated the gentle curve of your figure, refined and matured since your last encounter.
“Back from the edges of the realm, I see,” he said, his voice smooth and carrying a faint undercurrent of intrigue. His eyes traveled from the gentle slope of your shoulders to the way you now held yourself with quiet confidence, an air of poise you’d cultivated through months of growth and careful self-possession. “It seems time away has… agreed with you.”
A subtle heat spread over your skin as his eyes lingered, taking in the soft contours of your waist, the quiet strength in the way you carried yourself, the sense of calm restraint woven into every movement. The longer he looked, the more evident it became that he noticed every detail—the faint glow in your cheeks, the natural elegance of your posture, the way the tailored gown accentuated the gentle curve of your figure, refined and matured since your last encounter.
“Thank you, my lord,” you replied, inclining your head with the perfect touch of reserve, though a part of you reveled in the way his gaze lingered.
He nodded, though he didn’t pull his gaze away as quickly as propriety might demand. His eyes trailed over the gentle curve of your lips, lingering just long enough to stir a deep thrill within you. The smoldering intensity in his gaze felt as if he were seeing you fully for the first time, each subtle transformation, each newfound layer.
You took a steadying breath, feeling the weight of Daemon’s gaze still resting on you, hot and lingering. In a moment of collected grace, you inclined your head once more, summoning a polite smile to veil the turbulence beneath your calm exterior.
“If you’ll excuse me, my lord,” you said, your voice soft yet composed. “It’s been a long journey, and I should take some rest.” You allowed your gaze to drift past him, finding your sister still reclined in her bed, watching the exchange with an expression of relief mixed with gratitude.
You moved to her bedside, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her hand. “Rest well, sister,” you whispered, the tenderness in your tone genuine. She offered you a faint smile in return, her fingers squeezing yours lightly as she murmured her thanks. Without sparing Daemon another glance you turned around and exited the room.
As you left, you could feel his gaze following you, searing into your back as though it had the power to reach through layers of fabric and the composed mask you wore. Only once the door closed behind you did you allow yourself to exhale, heart racing from the intensity of that encounter.
The days that followed were filled with a quiet kind of purpose. You spent part of each day in your sister’s chambers, helping her recover as she regained her strength little by little. You would sit beside her, quietly assisting her with whatever small comforts she needed. She seemed grateful for your presence, her hand often reaching for yours as though seeking comfort from some unspoken wound.
Outside of these private moments, you found yourself drawn into the rhythm of court life, engaging with nobles, attendants, and visiting dignitaries. You navigated these interactions with a newfound confidence, a quiet charm that seemed to intrigue those around you. But no matter where you went or with whom you spoke, you felt the familiar weight of Daemon’s gaze from across the hall, a constant, burning presence that never seemed to waver.
On occasion, you would glance his way, only to find him studying you with that same intense, piercing stare. There was no mistaking his fascination —each time your eyes met, it felt as if he was peeling away the layers of distance and propriety, searching for the woman he now saw in you.
It was late one evening, after you’d bid your sister goodnight and retired to your chambers, that you felt a presence outside your door. The faint whisper of footsteps reached you, and before you could prepare yourself, the door burst open and Daemon stepped inside, quickly closing it behind him.
“What brings you here at this hour, my lord?” You tried to keep your voice steady, though your heart pounded with a mixture of surprise and anxious anticipation. His gaze was focused, piercing – it was nearly impossible to keep your calm.
His lips curved into a faint smirk, but his eyes never lost their focus, sharp and unapologetic. “I’ve been watching you,” he said, his voice low, edged with a dangerous hint of intrigue. He took a step closer, and you instinctively took a small step back, your fingers brushing the back of the chair beside you. His gaze roamed over you with a familiarity that was unsettling, a shadow of possessiveness in the way he looked at you. “Each day, you reveal another part of yourself. Something I hadn’t noticed before.”
For a heartbeat, you hesitated, glancing down in an effort to steady yourself. “My lord, I am a maiden, and it isn’t appropriate for you to be here,” you said, lifting your chin with a blend of bravery and caution. “If anyone were to see…”
Daemon’s eyes glinted with a hint of amusement at your words. “You shouldn’t worry about that – no one will see,” he replied, his tone smooth and easy, as though the matter of propriety were trivial. He moved closer, his presence enveloping the space between you. “Besides, I have no interest in the eyes of others. My interest lies solely with you.”
You steadied yourself, raising an eyebrow in quiet defiance, though your pulse betrayed the thrill rippling beneath your calm exterior. “Surely, with all your responsibilities, there are more pressing matters to occupy your attention,” you replied, challenging him – annoyed by his audacity. You hoped to steer the conversation toward some safer ground.
A spark of intrigue lit his gaze. “Perhaps,” he said, his tone growing softer, though he continued to close the distance between you, the intensity in his eyes darkening. “But none nearly as … captivating.”
The air between you grew taut, as if the space itself held a secret between the two of you, each searching for something in the other. You could feel his desire to break down the carefully constructed distance you had built in your time apart. He looked at you with such singular focus that it was hard not to be drawn in by it, hard not to feel yourself unraveling under the weight of his stare.
When he spoke again, his voice was softer, almost a murmur. “You may not realize how much you’ve changed,” he said, eyes flickering over you, tracing the slope of your neck until his eyes stopped at your décolleté.
You met his gaze, refusing to look away despite the memories of his past disregard. Those first dismissive words, his preference for a different woman altogether. But here he was now, his attention unwavering, as if each of those careless dismissals had been erased from his memory.
“Perhaps I have,” you replied, holding his gaze with a faint challenge. “But I’m not the only one who’s changed, am I?”
At that, his smirk faltered, his expression flickering to something more raw, unreadable. He reached out, his fingers brushing the fabric of your sleeve, a featherlight touch that nonetheless sent a thrill through you, catching you off guard. His fingers found your wrist, tracing gently along the skin, each stroke leaving a burning imprint.
“Perhaps I was a fool to overlook you,” he murmured, his voice reverent, his words weaving through the quiet space. His gaze lingered on your lips, tracing them in a way that made your heart pound faster, your defenses weakening.
After a moment’s pause, you inclined your head, a hint of defiance in your eyes. “You should leave, my prince,” you replied, stepping back just enough to break his touch, though the embers in your gaze told him far more than your words could convey. “Goodnight.”
For a moment, the room hung still. The intensity in his eyes burned into you, and yet, something in his expression shifted. The cool indifference he'd worn so often, the charming smile that had once been his armor, cracked. His jaw tightened, and his eyes darkened with frustration—sharp, predatory. His mouth opened as if to say something, but no words came. He was used to being pursued, used to commanding attention with ease. The dismissal stung, and it was clear to you that he had never expected you to turn him away so coldly, not after all the attention he'd lavished on you tonight.
Daemon's gaze flickered one last time to your face, and then, without another word, he turned on his heel. The abruptness of his departure left a tense silence in his wake. His footsteps echoed down the hall, fading into the distance, and you felt a rush of relief flood through you, the tension that had built up between you both dissolving with his exit.
You exhaled a quiet sigh, leaning back against the chair you had stepped away from, your heart still pounding from the exchange. The unsettling mix of exhilaration and frustration had left you breathless, yet part of you was grateful for the distance that now separated you from him. You had handled it—had maintained control, despite the overwhelming temptation to give in to his presence.
A few days passed, but it felt as though the tension between you and Daemon only thickened with each passing hour. He seemed to watch you more closely now, a constant presence that never strayed too far. You couldn’t escape his gaze, and though you tried to maintain your composure, the weight of it was unbearable at times.
That afternoon, you found yourself speaking with a younger lord who had been quite eager to engage you in conversation. He was attentive, listening intently as you spoke about the political goings-on at court. You found yourself enjoying the conversation, the laughter that flowed between you both coming easily. The lord’s hand was a little too close to yours as he laughed, his proximity felt almost too intimate, but you didn’t mind.
That was when you felt it—Daemon’s eyes upon you. You didn’t need to look to know his gaze was trained on you. His sharp, possessive stare burned through the air, and the laughter you had been enjoying faltered just slightly.
The lord didn’t seem to notice the shift, but you couldn’t help but feel the weight of Daemon’s stare, the intensity of it, as if his eyes were drawing a possessive line around you.
You made your excuses quickly, pulling away from the lord with a polite smile before leaving the conversation behind. Daemon’s gaze never left you, though, as you made your way through the crowded hall, his presence like a storm waiting to break.
That evening, you returned to your chambers, seeking solitude, but the silence didn’t last long. The door to your room opened without warning, and there stood Daemon, his posture rigid with a barely contained rage. His eyes, dark and stormy, locked onto you with an intensity that made your heart skip a beat.
“My lord,” you said, maintaining a calm, polite tone, but your insides were anything but calm. “What brings you here at this hour?”
His lips curled into a cold smirk, but his gaze was heavy, almost predatory. “I’ve been watching you,” he said, his voice low and rough. “It seems you’ve forgotten your place, haven’t you?”
You took a step back, a slight instinctive movement, but he closed the distance between you in an instant, the tension in the air thickening like a storm ready to break. “Laughing with another man like that,” he growled, his voice sharper now, the edges laced with anger. “Allowing him to come so close… Do you enjoy making me watch?”
You straightened, lifting your chin, but your pulse quickened. “It is not my fault if others find me engaging in conversation, my lord,” you said, your voice tinged with a challenge.
Daemon’s smirk slipped into something more dangerous, his gaze narrowing. He stepped even closer, forcing you to tilt your head back slightly to meet his eyes. “You don’t fool me, sweetling,” he snarled, his voice suddenly cold and sharp. “I see how you play this game, pretending to be untouchable. But I know what you want.”
His hand shot out, grabbing your wrist with a brutal grip. The force of his touch made you gasp, but he didn’t release you. Instead, he tugged you closer, his voice now a low growl. “You think you can tease me like that, string me along, but it’s not a game anymore. You want me just as much as I want you, and I’m tired of waiting.”
Your chest tightened, your breath shallow as his words sank in. You tried to pull your wrist free, but his grip tightened, his fingers pressing hard against your skin.
Daemon’s other hand reached up, his thumb brushing the line of your jaw as he studied your face. “You may be playing coy with everyone else, but I see through you. I know the way your body reacts when I’m near, the way you can’t resist me. Stop pretending. I’ve been patient, but not anymore.”
The heat from his body radiated against yours, the air between you charged with raw, undeniable tension. His eyes raked over you hungrily, his lips barely an inch from yours as he spoke again, his voice thick with a mix of anger and desire.
“You don’t get to walk away from me anymore, little bird,” he whispered, his breath warm against your ear. “I won’t allow it. I want you, and I’ll have you, whether you like it or not.”
A shiver ran down your spine, and despite your desire to resist him, a flicker of excitement mixed with fear ignited deep within you. But you couldn’t let him see it. You couldn’t let him have that power over you.
“Let go of me, my lord,” you said, though your voice trembled despite your best efforts. “This is not appropriate. You are my sister’s husband, and you have no right to treat me this way.”
Daemon’s grip tightened, and for a moment, you thought he might not let you go at all. His eyes darkened further, the raw desire in them burning through you. “You can keep pretending if you want,” he growled, his voice low and menacing, “but I know what you feel. You’re just as hungry for this as I am. And when I’m finished with you, you won’t be able to pretend anymore.”
You swallowed hard, trying to collect yourself, but his presence was overwhelming, suffocating.
Finally, you managed to wrench your wrist free from his grasp, stepping back. You didn’t speak immediately, your chest rising and falling with the effort of controlling your breathing. The room felt too small, too hot, as Daemon stood there, watching you with an unreadable expression.
“I said,” you whispered through gritted teeth, “leave.”
Daemon's smirk deepened as he took another step forward. You tried to back away, but his grip on your wrist tightened. Daemon finally closed the space between you, the heat of his body made your pulse race. His fingers curled tighter around your wrist, not bruising, but forceful, as if to remind you that you were his — whether you wanted to admit it or not.
"You don’t get to play innocent anymore," he said, his voice low and rough, dripping with both frustration and desire. "You tease and you push me away, but I see the way you look at me. You want me just as much as I want you."
His face was inches from yours now, his eyes fierce and possessive, like a predator who had finally cornered its prey. You could feel his breath against your lips, warm and unrelenting. "I’ve been watching you. Watching you play with the others, laughing with them, letting them touch you – touch something that should be mine. But I’m done playing games."
You inhaled sharply, trying to muster the strength to push him away, but his grip tightened around your wrist, pinning you against the wall. "Daemon —"
"No," he growled, cutting you off, his mouth capturing yours in a forceful kiss before you could say another word. His lips were demanding, taking what he wanted with a brutal urgency. His other hand slid to your waist, pulling you even closer, as though he could melt into you, as though you were already his.
You tried to pull away, your mind screaming that you needed space, that this wasn’t right. But his hand moved to the back of your neck, holding you still as his kiss deepened, his tongue exploring your mouth with a hunger that left you breathless.
"Don’t you dare pull away from me," he muttered between kisses, his voice almost a growl. "You’ll stop pretending you’re untouched. You’ll stop pretending you don’t want this, because I can see it. You’re not fooling anyone. You’ve been waiting for me to claim you."
You tried to push against his chest, but he was unyielding, his body pressed so tightly against yours that you couldn’t move. His lips trailed from your mouth to your neck, his teeth grazing your skin as his hand slid lower, over the curve of your hip, his touch possessive and almost painful.
“I’ve been patient long enough,” Daemon murmured, his breath ragged. “And now, I’m taking what’s mine.”
With a sudden move, his lips found yours again, harder this time, as if he was trying to mark you as his own. His hands were everywhere — gripping, pulling, commanding. The urgency in his touch made your heart race, and though your mind screamed for you to stop him, you couldn’t ignore the way your body reacted to him — each touch sending shivers down your spine, making your pulse quicken.
“Daemon, please—" you tried again, but he pulled back just enough to look at you, his gaze dark and intense, a predatory gleam in his eyes.
“Hush now,” he shushed you, his voice low, almost warning. “There is no escape, sweetling. You’ll belong to me, and I’ll make sure you know it.”
His lips brushed over your neck again, his breath hot against your skin. The room seemed to close in around you, the weight of his presence making it hard to think, to breathe. He was overpowering you, pushing you into a corner, and yet, a part of you felt trapped by something far more dangerous than his physical presence.
You felt a fire, a heat, coursing through your veins as he touched you, and no matter how much you told yourself you should resist, a darker part of you wanted to give in. But this wasn’t just about attraction — it was power. Daemon was making it clear that he wanted to control you, to possess you completely.
“I want you,” he repeated, his voice rougher now. “And I will have you.”
He pressed his body harder against yours, forcing you back into the stone wall, his lips claiming yours once more in a kiss that left no room for doubt. Daemon wasn’t going to leave — not this time, not ever. You were his, and he was going to make sure to set his claim.
As he deepened the kiss, the realization settled like a weight in your chest. You had crossed a line. And Daemon Targaryen had no intention of letting you turn back.
cat and mouse for a month or two or three • ttfd
chapter eight of the tortured firefighters department
previous chapter | masterlist | next chapter
cw: fem!reader, afab!reader, no descriptions of reader, brains is recovering, idiots in love, short chapter after a huge hiatus I'M SORRY OK , no proofreading otherwise i’d never post this (lmk if i missed something)
A new routine took place. You spend most days inside your apartment, classes online since they were checking all the buildings on that side of the campus, on medical leave from your job because, on top of the broken ribs, they wanted you to recover from the burnout you got yourself into. That also meant you were taking mandatory therapy sessions, and maybe after a month they could let you work again. It was like being grounded from what kept you fueled in your late twenties.
Their first mistake was giving you way too much free time while bored. You wrote pages upon pages of your thesis in your first week. The moment you hit send and sat to wait for your professor’s notes, you found out you couldn’t reorganize your home because it was considered too much effort for your broken ribs. Your kitchen became the latest victim.
But a real victim to all your boredom was one door down the hall, who probably regretted giving you a copy of his keys — to be used just in case of an emergency.
“What the hell are you doing, Brains?” It was the third time this week that Buck arrived at his home and found out you were there, just casually chilling,
“Reading!” You were upside down on his couch, a romance book in your hands.
“I don’t think this position is good for your ribs. Can you sit like a normal person?”
“No. It’s boring. Also, I’m gonna babysit Chris tomorrow, so I’m hijacking your Xbox.”
“Why aren’t you doing that at your place?” He pointed to your silly reading position.
“Because I needed to tell you about your video game. Are you hungry? There’s some lasagna in your fridge.”
“Did you make it?”
“Yeah. Now shut up, they’re finally confessing their feelings for each other.”
Buck turned the TV on just to get some noises into the silent apartment. You were too busy with your book, he was too afraid of doing something he would have regretted later. Somewhere between his first and second plate of lasagna, you put the book aside and started to pay attention to the news.
“Big rescue, hm?”
“I don’t know why they keep building towers with paper thin structures and too many glass windows with shitty fire alarms. What happened to the good ol’ bricks and stones?” He was eating at the table, probably destroying the food in record time.
“Excellent question. I’ll look it up and give you an answer tomorrow”
“You’re really bored, aren’t you?”
“Oh, what gave it away?”
“It’s definitely not the same book from yesterday, you cooked a lasagna as big as the ones Bobby feeds us, you’re gonna babysit Chris on Eddie’s day off.”
“He needs to run some errands, and Chris hasn’t been feeling good lately, probably just the flu. So I offered my services for the day. What’s wrong with that?” You stared at him. Was he cuter upside down than the other way around?
“Nothing, it’s just… are you ok?”
“Please, don’t pull a therapist on me, I already had my mandatory session today. I swear I’m ok, I’m just bored of doing nothing. No adrenaline, no deadlines.”
“You’re really addicted, hm?”
“What can I say, Buckley, I wasn’t made to stay still.” As soon as the local news was over and football started, you moved back to your book. Buck got up and went for some beers. “I’m just gonna finish this and I’ll see myself out.”
“I’m gonna charge you rent for my couch.” He sat on the floor, right next to your face. Third time in his living room was a charm, right?
“Wasn’t the lasagna enough?”
“I thought that was for my Xbox. Want one?”
“No, thanks.”
You opened your book again, but the sudden proximity with Buck was the only thing you could focus on. The five o’clock shadow, the red birthmark on the left side of his face, the brightest eyes you’ve ever seen… Staying alone with your thoughts for too long was making you think of things you once judged impossible.
It was a split second, but he caught you red handed, staring at him. You smiled and moved your eyes to the pages of your book, not sure where you left off.
One big hand snatched the object from you. You turned to your side to complain and retrieve it, giving Buck the perfect opportunity to bring your lips close and kiss you. It barely turned into a deep kiss before you took some space to process what was happening. Your action made Buck a little confused, blinking his eyes and nervously messing with his own hair.
Your ribcage started hurting, so you moved your body carefully until you were sitting on the floor, face to face with him. Giving him enough time to change his mind, to say he actually didn’t mean it. Because how could he kiss someone like you?
You thought you’d never see a glimpse of fear on the eyes of one of the most fearless men you knew. Buck was too stunned to say anything, his full, pink lips slightly open. Your hand found the curve of his neck, your cold skin over his boiling hot veins.
You leaned in for another one. He pulled you closer carefully. However, it was nearly impossible to avoid the messier, helpless kisses. Evan Buckley was finally taking over your mind, maybe even your whole body.
Both of you had to move back a little, taking quick breaths after such intense kisses. You rested your hands on his shoulders and smiled.
“Did it really take me getting trapped in a burning building for us to have the courage to do this?” You bit your lower lip, trying to avoid him noticing your blushed cheeks.
“I don’t know about you, but I wanted to do this for a long time,” he confessed.
And it caught you by surprise. So Maddie was really telling you the truth.
“Wait, how long?” He avoided eye contact and you laughed. “No, Buck, please. Tell me.”
“Do you remember that shift I got your number with Eddie? So,” he took a deep breath, “I was planning on asking you out that day, but I just… I chickened, ok?”
“And right after that you ate all my cupcakes when I was at Maddie’s. Off to the best start, Buckley.”
“Not my best move, ok?” He laughed. “How many months ago was it?”
“No clue, to be honest.” You pecked his lips again.
Buck’s arms held you close, not willing to let you go. His lips were just inches away.
“Should I remind you of my doctor’s orders?” you whispered.
“You’re never walking into danger on my watch again.” Buck finally let you go, but it was written in his face it wasn’t what he wanted. His touch lingered a little longer, a little too deep. And you were sure you were mirroring his actions.
“I know.” You got his video game console and your book. “See you tomorrow?”
“Sure thing, Brains.”
You leaned over, leaving a goodnight kiss and a promise to come back to whatever you just started.
+++
“Ok, do you want some snacks? I,” you checked your storage once again, noticing how you should’ve added “do groceries” to your list. “How are we feeling about popcorn?”
“I love popcorn!” Chris replied, his focus on the TV screen.
“Popcorn it is.” You turned the machine on and measured the serving. You heard knocks on your door. “Just a second!”
Maybe Eddie was back because Chris forgot something in the car? No, he had everything in his backpack. You opened the door, but your eyes stayed on the kid on your couch. “Really, Eddie, don’t worry. I can watch him for as long as you need and… Buck.”
“Hi.” Even if he looked like he just left the shower, his voice sounded like he ran a marathon and stopped at your door.
“Buck!” You both heard Chris from the couch. “Are you joining us?”
“Only if Brains let me.” He smiled, waiting for you to invite him in.
“How could I say ‘no’? Come in, we are playing video games and having popcorn.”
“You can play with me!”
“I’ll be there in a sec, Chris. I just need to talk to Brains first,” he pulled you aside and out of Chris’ view. Not like the kid is paying any attention to you, anyway. “Hey there.”
“Hi. Why do I have a feeling you’re here to babysit me?” You move to your kitchen, rushing to find the popcorn bucket in your cabinets.
“Can you blame me? You have two broken ribs, self diagnosed burnout syndrome,” you mumbled, “ok, your therapist said you have it, and you’re babysitting Chris on a day you’re supposed to wake up after 3.”
“It’s just for a few hours, and he’s not like Jee-Yun,” you pointed out the reality: Chris was just a little bit sick and Eddie didn’t want him to be alone. “So you’re here to see if I have plans for today.”
“Kinda.” He opened the top cabinet and gave you the bucket. “Do you?”
You elbowed him on the torso, playfully.
“Watch your step, I know his reputation.” You pointed to Chris over your shoulder. “But the answer to your question is no.”
Buck smiled, satisfied with himself. “Hey, Chris, orange or apple juice?”
“Apple, please! I’m crushing you!” The kid's voice indicated a promise to end Buck’s character.
“Ok, buddy, if you say so,” he turned to you and whispered, “so it’s a date?”
“Yes, Buckley. Now are you gonna help me with Chris or not?” You served two glasses of apple juice.
“Sure thing, but I might need to run some errands later because,” and he stopped himself. “You’ll see.”
Masterlist
It was a Saturday night in Barcelona, and you were holed up in your room, feet tucked under you, a knitted blanket over your shoulders as you read over the words in front of you for the hundredth time.
While the city was alight with people getting drinks, dancing, and laughing, you silenced your phone, closed your blinds, and put your headphones on to quiet any outside noises.
You had decided to stay in this weekend, caught up in writing an essay for your criminal law class that was worth 50% of your grade. Safe to say you did not take it lightly. You had been hunched over your computer for the last nine hours, brain numb and fingers aching as you had tried to come up with a thesis and strong argument for your essay. You had blocked out this weekend to finish the essay, letting everyone know ahead of time not to contact you unless it was an emergency, including Gavi.
Gavi had been gone for the last couple of days, traveling around Europe for the last leg of La Liga, and he had been adamant about spending as much time with you as he could once he got back - before his summer schedule kicked off. However, that hope was quickly cut short when you informed him you most likely wouldn’t be able to see him at all this weekend due to you being stuck finishing your essay.
Although he had tried to convince you to change your mind, bribing you with the idea of endless cuddles and then promising to be as silent as possible while you wrote when his first idea didn’t work, you relented, knowing that having him around would be a major distraction, one that you couldn’t afford.
“I’m sorry Pablo I don’t think I can this weekend. What about Monday?” You asked hopefully.
He sighed over the phone, his face pulling into a frown, “I can’t. We’re leaving Monday morning for France.”
You bit on your lip, feeling bad, “I’m sorry I just really need to focus this weekend.”
He nodded, “I get it. It just sucks. I wanted to see you at least once before I’m gone again. But it’s fine – I’ll survive.” He replied dramatically.
You grinned, “Well I’ll miss you Pablito.”
“I already miss you.”
The smile on your face only grew as your heart warmed at his words, “I’ll text you if anything changes. Have a great game, I’ll be watching.”
He gave you a wink, “Damn gotta show off now that my girls watching.”
You giggled at him, “Bye Pablo.”
He mocked your tone playfully, “Bye Y/n.”
That was last week, and now you were nose deep in your essay, textbooks scattered around you as you looked for possible quotes to strengthen your thesis. You had been so busy scanning the words on the page that you hadn’t noticed your phone buzzing non-stop next to you.
Once you saw the glow of your phone screen curiosity got the better of you and you flipped it around seeing you had eight missed calls from your best friend.
Your eyebrows knitted in confusion, it was almost two in the morning, she would for sure be at a club right now, happily dancing the night away with your friends, so why was she consistently calling you?
The phone buzzed once again and this time you were quick to answer.
“Hello, Gia, what’s going on?”
Her voice was slurred on the other end, but you could sense the panic regardless, “Y/n? I don’t know where I am, I was with the others but then I went to the bathroom, and I then couldn’t find anyone anymore. And this guy won’t leave me alone-”
“Gia, where are you? I’ll come get you.” You cut off her rambling, already rushing to put on your shoes, essay long forgotten.
She hiccupped, “I’m at Macarena. I’m sorry no one else answered.”
“No, no problem at all. I’m coming right now, Gia. Don’t move. I’m glad you called.” You comforted her.
The club was only a twenty-minute walk from your house, and seeing as you didn’t have a car or the time to wait for public transport, it was your best option.
You cursed yourself for not answering sooner as you rushed to get your keys, grabbing a random hoodie on the way out.
Although summer was beginning to creep into Barcelona, the nights were still chilly with cold winds rushing through the area.
You sped through the streets, walking with purpose as you finally reached the club. You were severely underdressed for the club wearing a random hoodie and yoga pants. You saw the line for the club was still extremely long, wrapping around the corner and you knew you had no time to waste.
You took a deep breath, mentally preparing yourself, you were never one to break any rules or ask for any special favors, but now seemed like a good time to start.
You walked up to the club bouncer, ignoring the nasty look the guy at the front of the queue was sending you, “Excuse me. I need to get in right away, my friend is inside alone, and I need to help her.”
You heard the guy next to you scoff.
The bouncer looked at you unimpressed. “Sorry sweetheart. You want to get to her, you have to wait in line.”
You relented, “Sir please, just look at my outfit,” you said gesturing to yourself, “clearly, I’m not here to party, I just need to get my friend and leave. You can even come with me!”
He gave you an apprehensive look, taking in your appearance, “I can’t leave my post.”
You groaned, “Fine, then can someone else escort me? I can literally call her right now. She’s not in the right head space.”
He squinted his eyes at you, “You look familiar.”
It finally clicked. This is where you had gone with Gavi and his team, celebrating after they had won a final a few weeks ago. They had treated you like royalty, blocking off a whole section just for you, the club owner even making an appearance to congratulate the team.
You didn’t like to use the fact that you were dating a well-known athlete as a way to get special privileges but if it meant helping your friend then you would do it.
“Yeah, I was in VIP a few weeks ago. I know the owner, so please let me in.”
“What’s his name?”
You racked your brain trying to think of that night, “Santiago. It was Santiago!” You replied, finally remembering.
The bouncer gave you a once over before he finally nodded begrudgingly, “Fine – but be quick.”
You heard the other people in line begin to argue but you quickly thanked the bouncer, rushing inside, not wanting to wait long enough for him to change his mind.
God bless Gavi.
The place was packed, bodies pressed together so closely that you had to squeeze in between heavily making out couples and groups of friends to make your way to the middle. The strobe lights were going crazy, changing every few seconds to the beat of the music. There was a DJ booth twenty feet above the crowd playing EDM Spanish music and the crowd was going insane, chanting along.
You hit your head on your forehead as you realized you forgot to ask her where she was.
You pulled out your phone, letting out a breath of relief when she answered, “I’m here Gia. Where are you?”
“I’m at- I said no, stop, I’m at the bar.” She huffed. You felt your anxiety rise, who was she talking to?
“Ok, I’m coming.”
You pushed through the throngs of people, finally spotting the bar, seeing her leaning against the counter, hands flying as she argued with someone.
You walked towards them hearing the tail end of their conversation, a bad feeling in your stomach.
“Gia!” You yelled, coming to stand next to her.
She gave you a relieved look, falling into you, the effort of standing up being too much.
You caught her, hugging her back.
“Oh wow – two for one. I got a buddy that would love you.”
You steadied Gia looking up to see the guy she was talking with giving you a smirk.
You held his gaze, annoyed, “No thanks. We’re leaving now.”
You went to turn but he caught your wrist pulling you back, the drink in his hand sloshing,
“Woah, don’t go yet, the fun’s just getting started. Look my buddies are in VIP we can hook you up.”
You yanked your hand away, giving him a disgusted look, “First don’t touch me. Second, we’re leaving.”
“You’re not leaving.” He persisted.
You raised an eyebrow, “Fucking watch me.”
He reached for you again, but you were prepared, grabbing his hand, and flinging it off you, as you weaved into the crowd, ignoring his shouts.
You let out a breath as you stepped outside of the club, grateful for the cold air after sweating through your hoodie in the packed club.
You adjusted your hold on Gia, holding her waist as you started the trek back to your apartment.
She stumbled over her steps as you walked, giggling, “Oh my god Y/n your bleeding!”
You gave her a confused look, dragging her, “What?”
She giggled again, reaching for your hoodie, “It’s coming from your stomach, look it’s red!” She pointed at your shirt.
You looked down and you stopped in your tracks, breath hitching as you began to panic, “Oh shit Gia I’m wearing Gavi’s hoodie!”
She stopped as well, letting go of you as she plopped onto the ground, staring up at you,
“So?”
“So? He’s going to be so mad at me. That dick spilled his drink on me. This is a white hoodie – who knows if it will come out?” You stressed.
“It’s-" she hiccupped, “fine.”
You shook your head, “No It’s not it’s his favorite hoodie, I didn’t even realize I was wearing it. Fuck, I have to clean as soon as we get home.”
You started walking before you realized she wasn’t following you.
“Gia?”
You turned around to see her slumped against the sidewalk, eyes closed.
You rushed to her side, shaking her, “Gia? Gia, are you okay?”
She hummed, “I don’t feel so good.”
“Can you walk? We’re almost halfway there.” You asked, helping her sit up so she was leaning against you.
She groaned, “I’m going to throw up.”
You looked around anxiously, unsure of what to do. You had left the main strip of clubs and restaurants, and were now on a back road, walking in an area that was dimly lit and that you weren’t too familiar with.
“I can call an Uber.”
You reached into your pocket, cursing yourself as you realized you had forgotten your wallet in the rush to get to the club.
“Shit, I don’t have my wallet. Do you have yours?”
“Antonio.” She groaned, leaning her head against your shoulder.
You let out a huff, contemplating what to do. You attempted to get her to stand up once again, desperate to get out of the area, but she couldn’t stand, and you weren’t strong enough to carry her the rest of the way. You chewed on your lip debating a solution, but you didn’t want to do it unless it was the absolute, last, last resort.
You spent the next five minutes calling all your friends, but no one answered. You groaned, frustrated, knowing you had run out of options.
You heard your friend beginning to doze off and you shook her, “Gia stay awake.”
She moaned, “Y/n I really don’t feel good. I don’t know what’s wrong.”
Your finger hovered over the contact, and you finally pressed it, feeling the guilt build inside.
It rang seven times before going to voicemail. You called back.
On the third ring, the line finally connected,
“Y/n? Why are you calling me so late?” Gavi’s voice was thick with sleep, his words murmured.
Hearing his voice sent a pang of relief through you, and suddenly you didn’t feel so alone,
“Gavi I’m sorry. I really need your help.”
He was up in an instant, wide awake, “What’s wrong?”
“I’m stuck in the middle of the road with Gia. She got drunk and I went to get her but now I’m worried there’s something wrong. She can’t get up and we’re all alone. I don’t have any money. I called our friends, but no one answered, I-I didn’t know what to do.” You rushed out.
You heard his breath accelerate on the other end of the line, “Ok don’t worry baby I’m coming. Send me your address, everything’s going to be okay. Just stay on the phone with me.” He reassured you.
You nodded before realizing he couldn’t see you, “Thank you so much Gavi.”
You heard his car door open, “Anytime. If anything happens like this again you call me first, okay?”
“Okay.”
You stayed on the phone with him, rubbing Gia’s shoulder to comfort her, readjusting her whenever she began to doze off.
Finally, you saw a familiar car pull onto the street, and you waved your hands, trying to get him to see you.
The car made a quick turn and then Gavi was rushing out, a worried look on his face,
“Oh thank god you’re okay. I was so worried.”
“I’m so sorry for waking you. Thank you for coming.”
“Y/n stop apologizing.” He said, helping you carry Gia to the car.
Upon feeling that she was being lifted, her eyes shot open, “Y/n what’s going on?”
She glanced over to her left seeing Gavi before she turned to look at you, it took two seconds for her eyes to widen and then she was whipping her head back, “Gavi? The hell y-you doing here?”
You giggled at her abruptness, “I had to call for help.”
She turned to you, snuggling into your shoulder affectionately, “You’re the best Y/n. She was a rockstar today.” She spoke, as you both pushed her into the car.
Gavi raised his eyebrow at you as you both got in, “A rockstar eh?”
You rolled your eyes, “She’s just spewing nonsense.”
Gia groaned in the back, hands clumsily coming to slap your shoulder, “Ehh don’t lie Y/n. You should have seen the way she talked to those guys – even I was scared.”
You saw Gavi’s grip on the steering wheel tighten, his posture stiffened as he looked over at you,
“Guys? What guys?”
You opened your mouth to reply but Gia beat you to it.
“This one guy, he kept trying to get me to come with him, but then Y/n was like no way we’re leaving, and then he started hitting on her, but then he tried to grab her, and she karate chopped his hand! He was so embarrassed!”
You felt yourself blushing at her recollection of events, “I did not karate chop his hand!”
“Yes, you did. It was like in midair when he was talking about his friend that liked you, and then I blinked, and it was gone!”
“Did he try anything?” Gavi’s voice was hard, as he looked at you.
You shook your head, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder, “No don’t worry. We were fine.”
You felt his body relax under your touch, and one of his hands came to grip your own, “You should have called me sooner. I’m sorry you had to deal with that asshole.”
You felt your heart flutter at his words, “Don’t worry I handled it. But thank you, next time I will.”
Soon you were pulling up to your apartment and hauling Gia up your steps.
“I really wish we had an elevator right now.” Gia groaned as she was being half pulled, half carried up the steps.
You made eye contact with Gavi after hearing her statement, and you had to bite your cheek not to laugh out loud,
“You and me both G.”
Finally, you reached your apartment, and all let out a sigh of relief as she fell onto your bed, passing out almost immediately.
You cringed as you saw her head land centimeters away from the sharp edge of one of your textbooks.
You reached over, clearing the space so she was able to sleep without the risk of a concussion.
You looked up once the area was cleaned to see Gavi looking at you intently, a weird expression on his face almost like he was stuck in his thoughts.
“What? Is everything okay?” You asked unsure, looking down at yourself.
That’s when you realized.
You were still wearing his hoodie, the one that had a massive red stain on it now thanks to the jackass at the club.
You had completely forgotten about it.
You quickly apologized, “Gavi I’m so sorry. Gia called and I was so worried so I grabbed the first thing I could find – and then the guy kept grabbing me and had this drink – anyways,” you let out a huff, “I’m really really sorry, I can buy you a new one.”
Gavi stared at you in surprise, shocked by your outburst, “Y/n relax. It’s okay.”
“I’m sorry I know how much you love this sweatshirt.”
Gavi shook his head slightly smiling, you were just so adorable, and he physically couldn’t hold back the words he’d been dying to say any longer, “I love you more though, so it’s fine.”
“Wha-what?” You stumbled over your words, clearly not expecting such a big revelation.
“I said I love you.” He said it with so much confidence, almost like he was reciting a fact, something that couldn’t be changed, and you melted a little at how sure he sounded.
You didn’t know what to say, your brain still playing those three words on a loop. He loved you. He had said it first.
The silence stretched on and now it was his turn to get nervous, “Is that okay?”
Your mouth was still open in shock, but you quickly recovered,
“Yo-you love me?” Your voice cracked.
“Well, yeah… why would I not?” He asked, eyes locked on yours.
You shook your head, a smile gracing your features as you took a step closer to him, “I love you too, and I’m sorry-”
He cut you off with a sweet kiss, pulling you closer into him, as he slid his hands under the sweatshirt, fingers gently squeezing the soft flesh of your hips.
Your lips moved in sync and your hands went to play with his hair, gently tugging.
You heard him let out a groan and you bit his bottom lip instinctively.
He pulled away out of breath, a dazed look in his eyes, “Joder, you can ruin all my hoodies if this is how you apologize.” He muttered breathlessly.
You rolled your eyes, smiling as he brought you back into him for another kiss.
its finals season (again..) and huge projects for classes right now. can we get a stressed reader x modern mizu where reader is like actually tweaking out? like I mean pulling our energy shots, shivering hands, 'gotta lock in', hysterically crying on snapchat video and sending it to their groupchat for moral support type of tweaking out and the reader is going BANANAS over all the final papers, and studying for finals and mizu helps comfort reader?? i hope this would be a silly little write but also helpful to anyone going through finals season right now. much love! xoxo <3
✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧
Hey dears!
To start this, I am absolutely sorry for being gone for so long. I had my thesis defense, practicals, laboratory works, deadlines, and my finals all in the span of two weeks AND I fainted twice, got sick twice, and nose bled a LOT.
I was chugging 3 cans of energy drinks a day, eating one meal per day, sleeping minutes less than how long I showered, and smoked quite a lot. Someone even caught me sleeping on the fire exit stairs (istg so embarrassing ;;). Honestly makes me wonder how I'm not six feet under by now.
To those who are going through their finals, please don't follow my lead. Vomiting at 3am from how dizzy you are while some Sepultura song plays in the background is NOT the experience you'd think it was. Try to plan when you'll tackle your work and get some sleep as much as you can, on your free time, on your commute. I swear, answering tests are SOO much easier when your vision isn't spinning or tunneling.
Chose to do this request first to remind you all to take care amidst your finals (or as a reward if your finals are finished, good job dear!).
Hope you enjoy! Mwa mwa <3
warning: not proofread, my corny jokes, she/her for mizu, implied afab reader
Blue orbs watched as you cracked open another can of Red Bull. A small grunt leaving your throat as the fizzy caffeinated drink went down your esophagus. Was this your second? third..no wait..fourth?
Damn.
How are your blood vessels surviving this onslaught of caffeine you've been shoving down your system? She had no clue. But what she did know was that you've had enough. This wasn't healthy at all. Your lips were already as pale as the palms of your hands which were trembling to the point where you couldn't stop writing because that meant you'd feel the quivering of your hands even more.
The two of you had decided to slave off at Mizu's apartment for your finals. It was mostly Mizu dragging you there since your friends have been bombarding her to take care of you since she had the closest to what was considered a free schedule. T'was something about you freaking out and crying over the finals. She didn't have a Snapchat account so she didn't know.
Usually, she wasn't even interested in these stuff, but when Akemi showed her a picture of you with a thumbs up, holding a can of Monster, dark circles under your bloodshot eyes, tear streaks on your face, with the caption 'Boutta pull another Kay Chung tonight', concerned didn't even begin to describe what she felt.
Boutta pull a Kay Chung?
What or who was this Kay Chung anyway?
She knew you were a hard worker, probably one of the most studious people she knew, so she already expected you to be busy studying. What she didn't expect was the mess you were in.
The moment she stepped into your unit, cans of energy drinks, bottles of energy shots, cups of coffee, and random paper strewn randomly littered your apartment. The only source of light was your window and a small dim lamp you had.
Was that cup noodle container growing mold?
Ew.
It was like the Capital Wasteland in here, and she was the lonesome wanderer, awaiting the dangers to come.
And you were a radiated ghoul hunched over your desk with the emptiest gaze she has ever seen. Your head in your hands, as you scrunched your eyebrows together, trying to figure out what the fuck was wrong with your equation.
Now she understood the bombardment of messages from Akemi and the others, and damn was she grateful for the heads up because you looked like you were at death's door and death... Death just thought you looked too pitiful to let in.
The two of you were now sitting on Mizu's carpet, books, papers, and gadgets on the smooth wood of the coffee table. In her mind, she thought a bit of companionship would comfort you like it usually did. But she was wrong.
The shaking grip you had on your pen and the occasional 'what the actual fuck?' or 'the hell?' already told her that you were too locked in to relax even just a bit. You looked like you were losing it.
Her eyes peered over your review sheet before she raised an eyebrow at how scattered your handwriting looked, numbers and symbols italicized to the left and to the right as if they were dancing and your solutions scattered. Add this value here..derive the formula there..problem 3's solution is somehow on the back of the paper even though problem 5 was solved on problem 1's spot. It looked like a shit show.
"What...problem is this for? You did it wrong." Her tongue clicking as a slender finger encircled a formula you derived wrong, making you look at her with a mildly bothered look. Your eyes tiredly scanned your review sheet, looking away to the side to blink the heaviness of your lids away, then looking back at it before letting out a strangled sounding groan, shoulders slumping back onto the sofa as you covered your eyes with your hands before looking at your own solutions again. "I don't fucking know..maybe it's for..umm..for..fuuuuuck," you sighed defeatedly, realizing that you couldn't understand your own handwriting either.
You wanted to strangle yourself so bad right now or like, strangle your professor until they give you a passing grade. Maybe the threat of arson would scare the university admins into passing everyone for the semester???? The prospect of being a sugar baby is starting to sound better than trying to finish this degree.
It wasn't like you were an absolute idiot. You could solve these problems no problemo. However, your vision was already lagging and tunneling. Whenever you tried to read the problem or your own handwriting, it was like your vision was hyper-focusing on one spot and the areas around it were...spinning or it'd focus on everything else EXCEPT the ones you wanted to focus on.
The amount of caffeine you had consumed wasn't even helping anymore. Instead of waking you up, you just felt jittery like a hyper-charged toy. Before you were sleepy and slow, now you were still sleepy but faster.
And when was the last time you even ate anyway? Was that moldy cup noodle your last meal? You didn't even know anymore at this point. You could barely feel anything aside from the fear of your impeding academic doom. Not even hunger was strong enough to stop you.
Mizu's eyebrows furrowed at how miserable you looked before sighing and pulling a sheet of paper out of her own notebook. "Here," she sighed out, sitting beside you and scanning each problem you had printed out before re-writing each question you looked like you struggled with. Her eyes occasionally glanced at you, unseen worry rising with every hitch of your breath and every twitch of your eyebrow as you looked at the questions she rewrote.
"Mizu..I don't want to do those all again," you groaned frustratedly, ruffling your hair own hair aggressively, strands falling to the carpet below. A hand held yours firmly, preventing you from tangling the ends of locks even more. "I'm going to teach you, dumbass. We can't have you failing and dying at the same time," she huffed, grabbing your calculator and placing it in front of both of you. She leaned closer to you, hand on your waist to pull you closer before taking the pencil and pointing to the first problem she rewrote.
"I'm not going to repeat my explanations, so listen well,"
...was what she said.
However, Mizu was a big softie when it came to you. Every time she caught you spacing out or having a hard time in general, she took her time and explained it to you again, even explaining it slower, simpler, or more detailed as needed. She really made sure that you understood the principle of the problems and the process of solving them, handing the pencil and calculator to you to make sure you actually understood her.
After a while, you were slowly starting to understand you earlier mistakes, and with her help, you were able to finally solve the review sheet. Thank god for hot smart women.
A look of amusement crossed her face as she watched you slump back onto the sofa with a loud sigh of relief. Shaking her head with a small lop-sided smile, she took the pen again before grabbing your laptop and searching for similar problems. "Here," she said, turning the device towards you. "Solve these. I'll be back in a bit."
You looked at her in confusion before letting out a tired groan. The exhaustion was starting to let itself be known through the heaviness in your lids. Another problem set was the last thing you wanted to do right now.
Oh wait.
Fuck, you still had to edit your methodologies and results, and you haven't even started on the discussion yet. Oh god...
'Better get started, I guess,' you thought with a defeated sigh. Muttering a string of curses under your breath, you picked up your pencil and calculator and began solving yet another set of hellish questions while the dark-haired woman stood up and walked off somewhere in her apartment. Silence filled the room aside from the aggressive scritching and scratching of lead against paper and the sound of clacking from your calculator.
Every now and then, Mizu would come back with something to comfort you. May it be a cup of water, a bigger pillow, a hair tie, or to charge your phone for you. She didn't really speak though, fully wanting you to focus on your work.
It was like her quiet little way of telling you that she was here and that she cared for you.
Amidst your problem solving, the smell of something being fried hit your nose, making you look up. It was a bit oily, but at the same time, homely and savory. Your stomach growled slightly at the smell, reminding you of that uncomfortable feeling of hunger that you were somehow able to ignore during your study sessions.
Just as you had finished writing your answers, Mizu came out of the kitchen with a bowl of rice and a plate of what seemed to be fried fish. Kinda burnt but maybe that's a charm point...or something. At least she tried.
She set it down on a clear space on the coffee table and gently urged it towards you. "Here," she mumbled, looking at you expectantly. You stared at the food she prepared, snorting a bit at the charred skin, some bits missing which obviously stuck to the pan while she was frying it. "Err..Mizu...?"
"Don't mind how it looks just..just eat, okay?" she groaned, sounding a bit embarrassed, a bit of pink dusting her cheeks. Her eyes looking away as her hand went up to cover half her face. You couldn't help but laugh a bit. Mizu? Embarrassed? God that woke you up, didn't it?
The sound of your laughter made her feel even more embarrassed but at the same time relieved. Your laugh was so fucking cute. She was glad that you were starting to sound a bit more like your usual self. Hell, you were smiling now. A big improvement compared to the face of misery you were making earlier.
Eventually, your laughter subsided upon the realization sinking into you. She really did all this just to take of you. Dragging you to her apartment, tutoring you, fetching things for you, cooking for you...
She really does care. Doesn't she?
Your hands picked up the chopsticks before breaking into the soft flesh of the food in front of you, picking off the bones before taking a bite. It was salty, the char even made it a bit bitter, and for god-knows-why, even a bit spicy?? But it tasted so good to you. Heavenly, dare I say.
As you continued to eat, bite after bite and scoop after scoop, the shakiness in your hands slowly calmed down. You couldn't help but look up at your friend who was now checking your answers, the ghost of satisfaction making itself known through the barely visible smile she had. "Mizu..."
She looked over at you, raising an eyebrow to indicate that she was listening. "Thank you for uh..taking care of me," you said shyly, giving her a small smile. A low chuckle escaped her throat as she shook her head slowly as if in amusement. "At least you're not shaking like a leaf anymore," she joked, followed by you letting out a small 'hmph!', making her chuckle yet again.
Though she wouldn't tell it to you right now, she'd be more than happy to take care of you anytime you wanted or needed it.
The sound of your pen tapping on the paper filled the room again as her eyes narrowed at your answers, checking it carefully. After a while, she handed the paper back to you, looking very much satisfied. "Looks good," she said, eyes watching the proud smile on your face. "How 'bout a reward?...Some rest I suppose?"
Your smile faltered at the sound of rest. "I can't...my manuscript is due in a couple of days and I haven't even finished editing my methodologies and results," you explained, opening the files for each of your chapters. "The data isn't even tabulated in the required format. It looks like shit."
She stood up from her spot and sat next to you, placing a hand on your head to pat it gently as she looked at the screen. Her eyes narrowed again while you scrolled up the file for her before she sighed. "Yeah, it does look like shit," she agreed before suddenly grabbing your laptop and setting in front of her. "Go and take a nap or something. I'll do whatever I can to...whatever this is."
"But Mizu, this isn't even your field. I can't—" She cut you off with a finger to your lips before gesturing towards the sofa behind the both of you. "Nap," she ordered firmly. You sighed before standing up and laying down on the sofa. You knew there was no use arguing. When Mizu makes up her mind, she's deadset on it.
Her eyes scanned your figure for a moment, taking in every curve of your body and the way your face relaxed. Then, she took off her jacket and draped it over you, before giving you a small loving pat. Before you could even open your mouth to protest, she immediately shushed you and turned to your manuscript, scanning over it.
Your eyes observed the way her eyebrows furrowed and the way her eyes darted from word-to-word. The sound of her typing and clicking filling the room, oddly relaxing you.
It didn't take long for you to drift off to sleep. And for the first time since hell week started, you finally relaxed.
No frustration, no stress, just...sleep.
You did nap for hours longer than expected though.
Don't worry.
Your methodologies were now updated, results properly formatted, and ideas in bullet points for your discussion were laid out in a new file. Even your references were fixed.
Damn, you really wanted to smooch Mizu reaaal hard after this.
can you make exo members as your childhood best friend? and with fem reader please! love your writing <3
❃EXO members as your childhood best friend❃
A/N: Hiii thank you so much for this ask! I am so sorry that it has taken me months to finally respond to it :’) I spent the last few months birthing a 35.000-word, 65-page thesis so I didn’t have any time/energy left to do any creative writing. Regardless, thank you for this cute ask! It was fun reminiscing over my memories with my childhood friend that I have known since I was four months old. Thank you for being so patient with me the very long wait, hopefully, this makes up for it!
Xiumin/Minseok:
✾ Xiumin and you became friends during recess in primary school. He noticed your classmates constantly picked you last whenever you played a game together during recess. Thus, whenever he was chosen to be a team captain, he made sure to pick you first, resulting in you two becoming close friends.
✾ Your mom adores him; heck, she prefers him over you. Xiumin has always been the perfect son; he got perfect grades, is polite, is handsome, cleans up after himself, etc. Whenever you call her, she asks whether you can pass the phone to him so she can ask her favourite child how he is doing.
✾ He is a very consistent friend. Regardless of how busy his schedule is, he makes sure to drop by your place regularly. If he can't visit you in person, he will have a four-hour phone call with you instead, where you two talk about everything and anything happening in your lives.
✾ At some point during your friendship, he had a massive crush on you. He never told you -and you might not have noticed it- but it was incredibly obvious to everyone around you as they watched him follow you with puppy dog eyes. Your mother still holds out hope that you will end up together.
Suho/Junmyeon:
✾ You guys became friends all the way back in pre-school when Suho noticed you were having trouble learning how to tie your shoelaces. Five-year-old Suho wasted no time and offered to help you out, patiently teaching you how to do it. You have stuck together ever since, remaining close throughout your teenage years.
✾ Suho dragged you through secondary school; if it hadn't been for him functioning as your tutor throughout your educational career, you would not have had the grades you ended up graduating with. Nowadays, he mostly gives you advice on work and will look over contract details with you when needed.
✾ He was 1000% your wealthy, rich best friend growing up. His childhood birthday parties were incredibly lavish; he would take all his friends to theme parks when he was younger, his parents paying for every expense. Even nowadays, he never misses a chance to spoil you rotten, taking you on already-paid-for trips whenever he is able to.
✾ You guys have stayed at each other's places so often that you call each other's parents mom and dad. It is not unusual for one of you to have dinner with the other's parents without the other present.
✾ Compared to the other members, he is less consistent with meetups, not minding it too much when a lot of time passes between phone calls. You can go months without talking to each other before sending the other a random TikTok or stopping by each other's place unannounced.
Baekhyun:
✾ The two of you have a crazy story of how you met. You met Baekyhun shortly after moving into the same street. At the time, you were convinced mermaids were real, so you decided it was perfectly reasonable to dive into the river running next to your house to introduce yourself to them without actually being able to swim. Luckily for you, Baekyhun happened to be playing nearby and jumped in after you without a second thought, rescuing you from drowning. He still holds it over you whenever he needs a favour.
✾ You have so many weird stories of when you were growing up together. You two would constantly get into trouble, most of it initiated by Baekyhun. It got to the point where your teachers decided to put you in different classes to prevent you two from pulling pranks during class.
✾ Your place is his place, and vice versa. On one occasion, you accidentally switched apartments; Baekyhun had gone over to yours whilst you had visited him. You still complain that he should cover your grocery bills as he tends to eat most of the food in your fridge whenever he is over.
✾ Baekyhun is such a loyal friend; he will always have your back and drop everything to come running when you tell him you need him. Baekyhun has friends he has known for over 20 years; he is a friend for life.
Chen/Jongdae:
✾ Your dad and his dad were best friends, introducing you to one another when you were two years old in the hopes you would become best friends, too. At first, you two were painfully shy, hiding behind your fathers to stare at the other strange kid, but after leaving you two alone for an hour, you two became quick friends.
✾ He acts very much like a brother. Chen can be super annoying, teasing you whenever he gets a chance, but he will drop everything and anything when you call him. He will not let anyone else -not even his members- tease you; it is only okay if he does it.
✾ You two give each other the best advice. You guys regularly call each other to talk about whatever problems and hardships you are going through.
✾ Chen wasted no time in asking you to be one of the bridesmaids at his wedding. God knows how much you contributed to the two getting together and how much time you spent helping Chen plan the proposal.
✾ Chen and his wife immediately called you to ask whether you wanted to be the godmother the moment they discovered she was pregnant. He cannot wait for you to have a child of your own so they can become best friends, too.
Chanyeol:
✾ You two met in primary school when you were six, and your teacher decided to have you sit together. Chanyeol got super competitive when he discovered you had gotten a higher grade than him on a spelling test, resulting in a friendly rivalry. To this day, you two get along perfectly well, but the moment that grades or board games are involved, a war will break out.
✾ He 1000% bullied you into playing video games with him. Chanyeol even bought you a gaming laptop, trying to convince you to join him. Regardless of his schedule or location, you have a regular game night where you play random multiplayer games, affectionately yelling at each other.
✾ You developed a tiny crush on Chanyeol when you first saw him after he got his growth spurt. It did not last very long, however; you remembered he was the same Chayeol who once ate a crayon on a dare and puked the contents of his stomach all over your shoes.
✾ Chanyeol is the worst wingman. He is very protective over you, and, according to his opinion, nobody is good enough to date you. Whenever you go out drinking, he will lurk behind you, attempting to intimidate whoever dares to come up to you. This man might be secretly in love with you and absolutely in denial about his feelings.
✾ Chanyeol once wrote a song about your friendship, but he has not yet made up his mind on whether he wants to release it. Part of him feels he should save it for a solo album.
D.O./Kyungsoo:
✾ You met Kyungsoo as he is the son of your mother's best friend. His mother had asked yours to introduce you two as Kyungsoo was a painfully shy child, and she wanted him to have more friends his age. Initially, he was quiet around you, hiding behind his mother whenever she brought him over. However, he slowly came out of his shell the more you played together.
✾ You two didn’t attend the same schools but remained good friends nonetheless. Whenever school would end, you would rush to meet up underneath a big old tree in the park near your house. You would sit there for hours, talking about your day or doing your homework together, until it got dark.
✾ Kyungsoo never told you, but you were the main reason why he pursued a career in acting and singing. You never failed to hype him up, giving him the confidence to put himself out there. He fondly remembers the countless karaoke nights where you would be his biggest fan, praising his skills when the song would end.
✾ He definitely developed a crush on you somewhere during your teenage years. Kyungsoo never felt the need to act on it, finding your friendship too precious to risk anything. His friends were very aware of it, though, teasing him whenever he would rush out the moment school ended to meet up with you.
Kai/Jongin:
✾ You two met on a playground when you were three years old. Someone had pushed you off the wigwam, and Kai, seeing you cry, stood up for you as much as a three-year-old can stand up for someone else. He refused to leave your side after, playing with you until it was time to go home. You two have been close friends ever since.
✾ He insisted on you taking dance classes with him, thinking it was fun to have something to do together. It became your regular weekly meetup point, enabling you to stay connected even when you went to different schools. You would show up an hour before class would start, just so you could talk without being scolded by the teacher, and would take your sweet time walking home, squeezing out as much time as you could.
✾ You recognize that Kai is incredibly handsome whenever you see him perform, but all you are able to see when he thrusts his hips is the same kid who once fell into a pond when he was collecting a bunch of rocks because he thought they were pretty and cried over a feather because he felt bad for the bird that lost it. Having so many embarrassing childhood memories of him is why you are still sane and not drooling over him.
✾ Kai bombards you with messages throughout the day; you once had over fifty notifications from him as he sent you every video and photo of a dog or cat he stumbled upon.
Sehun:
✾ You and Sehun met during daycare and initially did not get along whatsoever. You two got into a fight when Sehun stole the stuffed animal you were playing with, resulting in the caretaker putting the both of you in time-out. Weirdly enough, you bonded over your time in toddler jail, becoming inseparable after you were set free.
✾ Sehun and you constantly bicker with one another, having no problem calling the other one out or, as you like to put it, keeping the other person humble. To those who know you well, they liken your dynamic to that of an old married couple. However, people who do not know your friendship tend to assume you hate each other.
✾ Sehun gets insanely jealous when you hang out with his members or other friends of his. You are his friend, and as much as he likes his friends getting along, the bratty part of him hates when you do not have time for him. He will become incredibly whiny when too much time has passed between meetups and when he feels like you are ditching him for your friends.
✾ Sehun is your favourite gossip buddy. He will randomly call you to tell you whatever drama he witnessed or caught wind of. If calling is not an option, he will instead send you a thirty-minute voice note explaining the situation in full detail. Your chat is basically a podcast where you update one another about people you do not know and drama that does not concern you.
Riize June Reading 2024
Notes: Sorry for taking so long, I have been very busy with my thesis (defenses are coming up!). I will be fully back after the second week of July <3. Anyway, please enjoy and TAKE IT LIGHTLY
Shotaro
Love: So based on the reading, Shotaro is dating and things seem to be doing well for him and his partner. this is the same idol he has been dating since december of last year, so their relationship truly seem to be doing well and strong
Career: honestly he is a little bit apathetic. mostly because he doesn't like the way the group is benign managed, he isn't having fun with the Riize concept and he doesn't have the closest relationship with other members.
Self: I think he is his own enemy. Shotaro is someone who can be very impulsive and quite restless and his energy is heavy on that. mostly he is probably going through a shift at the moment which is the reason why he feels so out of place.
Eunseok
Love: still single at the heart, but he is seeing several people in a non official way. Eunseok is the type of guy who receives a lot of confession from people around him and he doesn't necessarily turn them down but he also isn't the type at the moment to seek anything serious. so he is pondering his options and having fun
Career: Just like Shotaro, his career at the moment doesn't feel the best for him. He feels like the company keeps removing and taking away from him, both financially and opportunity wise. His sponsor probably has a few deals but the company has not accepted them.
Self: he isn't in the best headspace at the moment. his energy feels a little low, there’s a lot he is trying to process and he is having quite a hard time. i think his emotional energy is probably going through some stuff, there’s also some grief here, but this could be left over energy from her past relationship
Sungchan
Love: his situation did not change from february, to the point where i got exactly the same card for this reading as well. His love life is extremely unhealthy, the relationship he has with his partner is built in nothing but words that I can't apply here. due to obvious reasons i can’t really develop much on his love life, other that its a very toxic love
Career: he isn’t very happy with how his career is going. not that he is heartbroken, but he was expecting more from SM, he was expecting more recognition, more fame, more. and that’s now what he feels like he is having from his hard work.
Self:his energy around him is very puffy, very heavy, almost unbreathable. i think he is also going through some stuff at the moment that don't allow him to process his feelings correctly. he isn't on the best headspace
Wonbin
Love: he is still single and not looking for love. He had a crush on someone but he knows that crush needs to stay platonic. there isn't much to pick out on his energy currently, and the deck isn't revealing much either
Career: another member who is really not happy with how things are going and with the decision of the company for their group. Wonbin feels like the group is overwhelming him, the company and his career his overwhelming. he probably has some hard time emotionally due to his situation
Self: despite all, he seems to be holding on in his head. Despite being exhausted and tired with his career, he is keeping himself positive and balanced. Wonbin is someone who doesn't allow himself to slip out
Seunghan
Love: He is single at the moment as well, and not really focused on his love life. although Seunghan sees people outside and he has how own flings and fun, he isn't looking for anything serious as long as he is on a non constant situation
Career: good news I think! at least i see things moving for Seunghan, i see some things being done behind the scenes and his sponsor and the company arranging things for a potential comeback
Self: despite the exciting news, he doesn't seem to be the most happy person at the moment, there's a lot of heavy energy around Seunghan, a lot of disappointment and emotional immatureness
Sohee
Love: Sohee is still dating the same person he was on my last reading and their relationship seem to be going strong and healthy
Career: he is probably the only one who is rather satisfied with the choices of the company. he believes that he will beneficiate a lot from what they are cooking up for them and Sohee also as the luck to have a sponsor that is ready to invest in him
Self: he is all alright, doing right and his energy is strong and quite chill as well. Although a little bit authoritative, he is doing well.
Anton
Love: He is still single and struggling with some delulu about someone. Anton truly had this crush on someone (the same that rejected him previously in february) but he doesn't want to let it go, because he believes that the person will crack and come to him
Career: Just like Sohee he thinks that the decisions made by the company are start and they are good financially speaking. at least he is receiving his paychecks and he is using his time to develop his skills
Self: he is shifting a lot, his energy is going through some transformation. based on what the deck says, maybe Anton is getting ready to show a new self or changing something physically
