so season 6 of The Dragon Prince really went HARD on parents, children and generational trauma. A+, only one note which is not reeeeallly a spoiler? well OK a tiny part of it is a big one so I'll slap it behind a readmore.

what IS it with this show and dead/absent moms??? I mean, first Ezran and Callum, Rayla, Soren and Claudia, and - where was Leola's mother in all this drama?? She dead? Ditched Aaravos and Leola like Lissa did Viren because he was also poisoned by arrogance? Because that heartwrenching story feels juuuuuuust a tad too convenient (I mean, everything he said might be factual, it feels correct that anything as powerful as a Startouch elf is in fact probably All About Hierarchy and maintaining their supremacy, but Aaravos is the king of lying by omission and assumption.)

The only mother we see in this show that isn't dead is Zubeia, and it's not like they didn't TRY to kill her off. She's been nearest thing TO dead for like, almost a season and a half.

The IMPACT of all those missing moms? Not...really that much? Except for one - Lissa. Lissa leaving Viren and the kids is a festering scar of pain and resentment more than a decade later (we learn that Viren using dark magic to cure Soren was right around the time of Harrow courting Sarai, and describing Callum as a 'toddler,' it couldn't have been much more or less than that) that clearly hasn't resolved at all for any of them through the end of this season.

While Rayla, Callum and Ezran are described as missing their parents, grieving for them, they don't seem to have the same kind of fear of being unlovable; their fears and feelings about their parents seem to be mostly to do with legacy, "can I be as good/strong/worthy a person as they were," not "can I be good enough to be enough for them" The show HAMMERS on this point. Makes me wonder which showrunner was a child of divorce :P

It's not misogyny I don't think, there are active and interesting female characters in a number of different kinds of roles, not all just "ok, give THIS action figure boobs and make her a girl For The Rep" kinds of characters. But it's an interesting blind spot.

(I really, really just want an equally ridiculous and heartbreaking fic of Soren having an aaaabsolute meltdown/freakout about meeting Corvus' mom and Corvus' mom going from being reaaaal suspicious of her kid dating Virenspawn to just sighing a lot when Soren says something sweet but dumb, and to Corvus' intense relief not nagging him any more about 'well if you HAD to date another Crownguard who's too busy to give me grandchildren, why not that nice boy who translates for General Amaya instead of the Dark Mage's hellspawn?")

Listened to a podcast the other day discussing Season 6 Episode 2 with Jesse Inocalla (Voice of Soren) as the guest, and one part of it really reminded me of why I love Soren and Corvus, either as a romantic pair or even just as a friendship.

To summarize, the theme of the episode that the podcast picked out was the theme of acceptance, and Jesse Inocalla picked the last moment, where Corvus says "A good man with a big heart" to analyze through that lens. And he talked about Soren, who has wanted nothing more than to be loved as his complete self, not just as parts of himself (a crownguard, someone who is silly, someone who has gone through everything he has, etc.), and Corvus really being one of the first people to express that kind of love and acceptance towards him.

But then the host of the podcast asks Jesse about who is doing the accepting in that moment (as per the theme discussed), and I was surprised when Mr. Inocalla answers that Corvus (I believe part of his response were the words "fuck it, we ball" regarding when Corvus finally returns the hug after being caught off guard), and that speaks so much to this dynamic they have. Corvus, who is not big on physical affection, would say "fuck it, we ball" to a big hug from Soren. We see a little of his discomfort at the beginning of the episode when Soren (literally) picks him up. But in this moment, there is only a second of that, before acceptance. Acceptance of that affection, and accepting what Soren means to him, and what he means to Soren, and letting that vulnerability happen.

That's why Sorvus, or platonic Soren and Corvus, or whatever, has captured my heart so much. I just love them to bits.

!!SOME TDP SEASON 6 SPOILERS!!

Claudia and Soren are so different, they make my heart hurt.

Claudia tried to do everything for her dad, she cut off her fucking leg, and then Viren just fucking left her. I know he left for 'the greater good' but he still fucking left. He made her so different, he made her turn to Aaravos, and he left her. Claudia didn't get love from him unless she was good, you could see that.

In the first few seasons even, we can see how much Soren changes, because even if his dad didn't love him, and his dad tried to make him do horrible things, he had love from other places.

Soren escaped Viren, but Claudia stayed with him.

tdp inspired au starter for @atypicalsenerio !!

Paper rustles beneath her fingers as they move, gathering slowly into fists atop the table. Countless lines span the parchment before her -- black ink drawing borders and territories, scrawling the names of kingdom after kingdom, village after village. Nyna shuts her eyes, loosing a heavy sigh. Countless homes, thousands of lives, all within even the smallest of shapes on her map. 

All relying on her. 

The room around her is a mess. Papers litter every surface -- maps and books piled high on every table, in every corner, scattered across her otherwise untouched duvet. For all of the composure that her regalia exudes, her surroundings speak the exact opposite.

A knock on the heavy oak of her door. She calls for entrance.

“Soren,” the queen’s chin dips in greeting, crystal eyes dull with exhaustion no matter how even her tone. She straightens her shoulders, rising from where she had been hunched. Hands fall away from the map to reveal red.

“It’s good to see you.” The mage looks as he always has; disgruntled, hair streaked with white, and carmine eyes cold. “Tell me,”

She takes a step back, turning her gaze from him and instead towards the late afternoon sun that filters though her window with a long breath.

“what do you know of why I have summoned you?”

I was wondering, how do you figure out how to connect fleshed out plot points? I feel like when I write, it’s very easy to come up with the scenes that give me the most brainrot, but when it comes to “now how DID blorbo get from accepting their feelings about cake to fighting the bad guy?” I struggle. What IS the middle of a story? Is there something we're supposed to do with it or is it just.. idk😭

..also (im so sorry: i know its like ten years old and u literally have 5k backed up questions but i only found out about it a few months ago) ellegaard was making a command block? thats very cool and very scary, how do u think she wouldve used it, versus soren?

There's a storytelling rule I learned ages ago that applies here, and it's the power of two very simple words:

BUT and THEREFORE

When you're constructing a story, every scene/plot point should be followed by BUT or THEREFORE. Ideally alternating.

Like so!

Mx. Blorbo wants to bake a cake BUT

They go to the kitchen and discover they have no sugar! THEREFORE

They go to their nice neighbor to ask for some BUT

The nice neighbor is not home! THEREFORE

They have to go to the store. BUT

On the walk to the store they're attacked by ninjas! THEREFORE

They have to run away from the ninjas to hide BUT

And so on.

The other piece of this puzzle that you may be forgetting is that every plotpoint or scene needs to ALSO have structure. So "Mx. Blorbo wants to bake a cake" isn't as simple as writing a scene that starts with them saying "Time to bake a cake!"

That scene would probably go:

Mx. Blorbo is feeling sad and realizes it's because they're hungry

What they're craving is cake, but that seems like a lot of trouble.

They go through some other options of what they'd like to eat but nothing sounds appetizing.

They finally realize that nothing else will match the craving for cake. Therefore, they'll just need to make one.

See how even when just breaking down that simple scene we had a few BUTs and THEREFOREs?

That's because all story needs to be driven by what a character WANTS and the OBSTACLES and RESULTS connected with that want. Start thinking about your story that way instead of disconnected plot points and it'll go way smoother for you I bet!
