sorry i had a Very long week, my brain is mush

okay so I feel like there's a tenancy to portray Rooster as a hothead, like a troublemaker when he was young. which, I totally understand it since the emotional arc of TGM is him having a meltdown over meeting Mav again.

but the thing is that I feel like Rooster's angry switch is specifically Mav. what I really like about Rooster is that he's almost excessively calm and collected as a person.

like, I made Punct rewatch his intro scene today and babbled about his body language. the thing about that scene at the Hard Deck is that he comes in with a load of confidence, then plants himself in a spot, and Hangman comes to him. When Hangman starts to needle Rooster,

he gets nothing. Rooster completely No Sells him. His expression is almost annoyingly mild, it verges on condescending. And in response, Hangman gets in close to him, does his "you're snug on that perch" line AND STILL GETS FUCKING NOTHING. So he segues into his bravado-laden "I love this song" basically as an out, because Rooster is not giving him the satisfaction of a response.

And I feel like that's Rooster's thing, his composure. He's not combative, he's not overtly competitive like the others, he is contained.

Rooster gives me the impression he would be the kind of person who, if you started a serious, heated argument with him, he'd go blank and still in an attempt to defuse. Which is!!!! Fucking annoying! Because it's not contending with the actual Content of the disagreement, it's managing the person he's dealing with. It's "I have more emotional control so I can direct this interaction" yanno what I mean?

And I get the impression this is what Hangman finds so compelling/irritating about Rooster. He's CONSTANTLY trying to get Rooster to fucking react, but he's the ultimate fuckign No Sell. This is why Hangman latches onto figuring out wtf is between him and Mav, and as soon as he does, its finally, FINALLY the thing that gets a rise out of Rooster, and Hangman is fucking thrilled.

So, all of this to say: Rooster, to me, feels like a very level-headed, calm guy. Which I think fits very well with the fact he's an only child and he's also lost both of his parents young, his father very suddenly and his mother very slowly in a painful, probably expensive process.

The thing about being an only child in a household dealing with Heavy Shit is that your childhood becomes very abbreviated and you sort of... have to mature much faster than normal.

This is frankly what I love about Rooster? I adore that he is a very placid guy who doesn't feel the need to butt heads with other aviators, but that he does have a temper about one specific man, and he has zero control over that.
