They were jealous of her. Basically they're like "I've been training my ass off for this, but some foreign girl managed to get in and is more popular than us?." This way of thinking was definitely popular with the trainees (not all but a lot of them thought that way). Some hid it better than others though. I don't know but I keep seeing something with money here? Is it like they thought Manon did something to someone and they helped her as a resort? They don't think she really deserved it.

I see this affecting her at first. She seems to be quite sensitive. But over time she wanted to work hard to prove herself as worthy in their eyes. Sophia thought that there was something very fishy with Manon. She didn't trust her. She viewed her as a rival (she's a Capricorn so I'm not surprised) so seeing how she acted took her aback? I see her working sooooo hard and then Manon is just doing her own thing and she's like "tf is this bitch on!??". She felt that Manon's sweet girl personality was fake and probably thought she was something else deep down. I see her trying to "investigate" the "real her". "She knows what she's doing". She was very alert about Manon. She was alert about everyone but she intimidated her the most. It's like Manon would piss her off a lot.

Lara didn't think that Manon was serious at all. This girl is REALLY passionate about music and you can see it. There'd be some moments that made her go ????. She thought that Manon didn't take this whole thing seriously. She thought that Manon didn't really work hard for all of the recognition that she got. I see her becoming quite defensive because she's trying to be on top as well. She basically thought that she really wasn't doing much.

Ok this might sound weird but it's not really like she thought Manon as a PERSON was annoying. It's like this. "Everything was going well until some girl came in and decided to ruin everything for me!". With the World, the time words "DEI hire" came to mind 😬. She thinks Manon is very cunning.

So in the documentary, you know how Manon wasn't feeling well and she'd have days off? Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if she got pissed off from that. I have a feeling Manon might have struggled mentally during those times and Naisha was like "it's not even that big of a deal 🙄". She thinks that Manon is crafty and thinks that her soft personality isn't true. She thinks (and knows) that Manon has a lot of appeal to people. She thinks Manon was too soft and needed to "harden up". But I do not like this girl. She's a 🐍nakeee . Very fake af.

Missy didn't really like her. I think that if Missy was fully in control, Manon would have been cut. In her eyes she wasn't working hard enough and was being "too soft". Also I keep seeing 8 of Wands. I wouldn't be surprised if she was muttering "it's pretty much because she black and such, blah blah blah".

Even, the mother of his ex, Cody Kennedy, said she had nothing bad to say about Sam and that he was a gentleman. And this was AFTER Sam broke up with her DAUGHTER to go date Abbie Salt.

I just can see it's true and there is nothing talented, valuable or exceptional about my art. It is mediocre except for my attention to detail. I just know everyone can see it too, that I am wasting time and effort on things that don't even look good or that anyone will want to save and cherish ever, and that my "true" calling is writing not drawing. I just can't stop I guess, I like what I like. But also I wish he never said those things tbh. This is so interesting! Some great points: their insecurity really does drive them latching onto Tilrey, because his own trauma has turned him into someone who seems like a safer bet. Another thing so insidious about Gersha and Vera: their stubbornly refusing to recognize their privilege.

Granted, technically Vera couldn't order Tilrey around I guess, but still, huge Upstart->Laborer power imbalance. Yet out loud she insists she's some social justice warrior who doesn't SEE levels 🙄. She has to believe levels don't matter, because if they do, maybe there's some other reason it seems like this cute guy likes her back as she dreams.

Gersha was worse: he refused to acknowledge the elephant in the room, that sure maybe he & Tilrey are becoming a couple, but that it doesn't matter if they are, because either way Gersha has the power to order Tilrey to be anything Gersha wants and the power to ruin Tilrey's life if he won't (he even insists he has no power at all, it's all Verán's - that's not true). Instead of tackling this head on, Gersha twists it to be that it's sooooo tragic for himself (not Tilrey): "See?!?! This is why I can never be sure if Tilrey really loves me or is faking!!! Poor meeeeee, what a difficult situation *I* am in!"

All this to say: it's an excellent story and excellent writing and excellent characterization! Granted, it makes a lot of us be Gersha haters who side eye our Tilrey's man long after they get back together like an overprotective bestie... but still 😂 It makes for SO much interesting thinking about this world 🙌

P.S. The tragic thing is, the original, sweet, pre-captured Tilrey wasn't the person people like them might've assumed someone like him was - he wasn't a full-of-himself hot guy. He *was* actually a shy, smart, thoughtful, caring, loyal person who might have actually connected with them. But the guy they've met has had a lot of choices and self-belief taken away from him, and that gives these insecure folks their courage. Yuck.

Oof, that last paragraph makes me think about how tragic it is that so many people project their own desires and fears onto Tilrey. Upstarts want him because he looks like the stereotypical high-named golden boy, but they can control him and use him as an outlet for their rage or lust or whatever they feel for their peers. Verán treats him like a captive extension of Malsha. Besha looks at his height and strength and sees all the bullies who used to torment him. So does Gersha, to an extent. Vera sees all the boys who rejected her. Even when Vera and Gersha claim to know and understand and appreciate him, they’re still responding to this image in their head.

He really is like a celebrity that way! I’m fascinated by how we take beautiful people—who are often damaged and abused by their creative industries—and turn them into icons by projecting our own needs onto them.

You describe so well how Vera and Gersha refuse to acknowledge they have power. They can’t get to Step 1 of being a real ally because they can’t stop making it all about them (though they do learn better eventually, Vera mostly off-page). I just learned today about “vulnerable narcissism” (narcissists who have low self-esteem because they define success as becoming the main character and dominating others), and that’s these two in a nutshell.

Seeing Jeeto come into play in any capacity at all makes me feel like a proud parent watching their children grow. Its always wonderful like those are my emotional support middle aged fictional men. I watched them go from conspiracy to getting crumbs to now their "dates" and gossiping together. Youve gotta love it. Those are my children. Im so proud of them. But im also scared because you killed shen so obviously my feeligns mean nothing to you 🙄😒😒. Also its always really subtle but its funny to see your specific linguistical patterns in liab esp because i can never really explain it. Like ill read a random sentence and be like 'yeah that seems like sreeder wrote it' i just think its neat.

The 'moving forward' ness of zukka in liab is so nicely written. Like ive been reading liab since (almost) the beginning and it has been a ride and its starting to feel more conclusive and that is SCARY but its also nice because you write it very well and i adore the way you write trauma and the healing of it and the ups and downs and the two steps forward two steps backness. Its very lovely.

I knew ara was going to have a suicide attempt (esque situation (idk if that counts)) i called it i win.

Idc what others say ara will always be amazing. I love her character SO MUCH

i feel like you can always tell the strengths of a writer in the way they write complicated characters and the way you write ara is very telling of that. Like the fragility and also harshness used for her is very realistic and i always enjoy her parts so much.

Like her deciding to move on independant of how zuko or sokka feel about it is and regardless of whether people thinks she 'deserves it' is immaculate.

And thats a good example on your specific strengths as the author of liab (being able to handle delicate situations well, and realistically and make them very thought out and not rushed, stuff like that).

But her 'i need to start getting along with other girls' is great because like,, RHATS SO TRUE. she is genuienlly one of my favorite characters of all time, i could write essays on why i love her. Exquisite.
