Regarding Gerald in Sonic 3

(SPOILERS!!)

I've been thinking about how Gerald Robotnik was depicted in the third Sonic movie, and I have some observations.

I'm sure some fans have been comparing Gerald as shown in the film versus the games and taken note of not only how much sillier he is in the movie, but also how he's depicted as being considerably more villainous.

There are a couple things to consider though. In the games (especially since Shadow Generations) the majority of what we see of Gerald is from before the tragedy on the ARK and losing Maria, and we only get brief bits of him after he lost his sanity.

However in the movie it's the exact opposite situation. Almost everything we see of Gerald in the film is after Maria's death and he's clearly lost his sanity. Not only that, but because Gerald in the film never got executed, he spent many decades in a prison cell, stewing in his despair and rage, becoming more and more bitter and deranged while also extending his lifespan to an unnatural length by dosing himself with chaos energy from Shadow's quill.

But you might say, "Gerald in the movie only saw Shadow as a tool and didn't love him." While there's evidence of that being true in the present day, there's little to suggest that's the case in the very brief bit we see of Gerald in the flashback he's shown in before Maria's death. I personally think Gerald did have a fondness for Shadow before the tragedy, likely through observing Maria's close friendship with him. When Gerald retrieves Maria and Shadow to flea the facility he refers to them both collectively as "children", meaning he possibly had a similar fondness for both of them. I think that after Maria's death though, Gerald's slipping sanity, disillusionment with humanity, and obsession with avenging Maria's death, probably made him lose sight of the love he once had for Shadow.

And there is even evidence of the same thing happening in the games, with Gerald treating Shadow as little more than a tool for his posthumous plan for genocidal vengeance, which would have ended with Shadow's death too. Gerald even tampered with Shadow's memories of Maria to ensure he'd carry out his plans.

There's also evidence in the games of Gerald having an ego similar to Eggman's, shown by him modeling the ARK to resemble his face. Gerald even sheepishly confessed in his journal he was being self indulgent when designing the ARK. So it would seem in the games Gerald does possess at least some of the negative traits shared with his grandson, though he's self aware of these flaws and tries to suppress them. Gerald in the movie however is at a point where he's way past caring, since he's already decided to destroy the earth and everyone on it, so he's just letting his freak flag fly. lol

So if Gerald hadn't been executed in the games, who knows how he might have turned out. Gerald being executed was probably a mercy, really...

And it should also be noted that Sega themselves even considered resurrecting Gerald as a villainous character in the early production of Shadow's solo game.

That actually brings me to another thing I was thinking about while watching the movie. In Sonic 3, they repeatedly emphasize how similar Eggman and Gerald are in appearance, quirks, skills, and even wearing near identical outfits at the end. Sonic even collectively refers to them both as "Eggmen".

This stood out to me because it reminded me of the Rush games where Eggman teamed up with Eggman Nega, a character that was near identical to Eggman, but having a greying mustache and a darker, more twisted personality.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I've had a theory that the scrapped plot point of resurrecting Gerald as a villain is what led to the creation of the Eggman Nega character. So seeing Gerald as depicted in the movie was like seeing it all come full circle. lol

But anyway, yeah, this has been another stream of consciousness rant from me. Maybe you got something out of this, or maybe not. Oh well. lol

And just to make myself clear, I am NOT trying to argue that Gerald is a bad person in the games (at least before Maria died). If what I said came across like that, then I'm sorry, but that was definitely not my intention.

Sonic Movie 3 spoilers

I was so excited to see Amy Rose and Metal Sonic in the post credits scene-

Amy fucking jumped a bunch of robots that had Sonic cornered. Also, she has her hammer, and I love her design

Also, the moon scene with Shadow and Sonic was pretty gay, lol. Not exactly what I expected, but then again, I'm not complaining.

(I was expecting Amy to appear in the movie and be the one to convince Shadow to not destroy earth(I think that's how it went in the games?))

Also, I love that Tails knew exactly how to describe team sonic, despite not technically being team sonic until a few hours or days prior.

I loved seeing Stone trying to befriend/simply talk to Shadow.

Overall, I loved this movie, and I will eventually watch it in better quality.

Sonic 3 spoilers below:

So last night I ended up writing out my thoughts of hedgehog politics and what the plot of Sonic 4 could be about, at least in regards to Amy and her backstory, on Discord. I decided to crosspost it here because @welcome-to-green-hills actually wrote a very nice post that actually matched my thoughts. This is copy and pasted straight from Discord, do apologies if it looks... weird.

Anyway S4 maybe taking the chance to dive into why Sonic was living with Longclaw and my thoughts turned into "chaos control is a way to determine rulers in the hedgehog tribe and Sonic was supposed to be the next leader with his siblings Sonia and Manic when his mother Aleena stepped down, except Amy Rose's parents wanted to take control since Amy also had chaos control except hers was more chaotic leading to the death of a large portion of the tribe when she tried to use a emerald at the manipulation of her family, with Sonic being the only survivor of his family and given to Long claw to keep him away from Amy's surviving family except Amy now wants to earn forgiveness for her family's crimes and ease her guilt."

It's been pointed out here and there that Amy's bracelets actually look like Shadow's limiter bracelets, so...

Fun idea I actually had in relations-

For reasons, Sonic needs to be taken to Amy's dad to be healed, except he refuses because...politics. We have Shadow whisper in Amy's ear before she leaves a few minutes...Before Sonic's angry family slam down the door to terrorize this idiot.

It happened in an instant.

They were searching for one of the chaos emeralds, lost in the battle against Metal Sonic, in a large, grassy plain. It was entirely flat, which made the search frustrating, considering you would think flat areas would be easy to search. Every moment searching here put the world, put Amy, put their family in danger.

The flatness made it easy to see the four figures looking around.

“Is that-?” Knuckles asked as both groups drew closer to each other, close enough to see the distinctive red stripes in dark quills. Sonic froze, clearly realizing who they were looking at. Across the fields, Shadow froze too, his eyes going wide at the sight of them.

Blue sparks started to dart off Sonic.

“Sonic, wait, he might still be dangerous-”

Sonic took off like a shot, the air popping in their ears. Knuckles took a step back and Tails followed. The trademark blue energy that followed their brother was reaching new heights that none of them had seen before. On his side, Shadow also took off like a shot, ignoring Stone and the white bat’s yelps, his air shoes creating a visible streak of red.

When they collided in the center, the energy exploded.

Tails shielded his eyes and backed into Knuckles to prevent himself from being knocked off his feet. He had seen what the two of them had done to Tokyo, but this felt different.

When the dust cleared, the explanation was revealed.

In the middle of a small crater that hadn’t been there before, Sonic and Shadow stood there, holding each other like they were a piece of driftwood in a cold, lonely ocean. Sparks snapped and popped off them. If either of them noticed, they didn’t complain. They just swayed lightly together, a faint resemblance to their dance in the stars as they sank into the dirt, their tails wagging.

Without a word, Tails started running towards them. Based on the heavy footsteps, Knuckles followed close behind. On their side, Stone rushed over, followed by the robot (where on Earth did Shadow get a robot, Tails wanted a robot) and the white bat flying behind.

By the time they reached the duo, Sonic was more cradling Shadow, pressing kisses to his forehead and running his fingers through Shadow’s quills. Shadow had faint tears glinting in the corners of his eyes, matching the tears Sonic tried to hide whenever he had nightmares. Despite the tears, both were smiling.

“Sonic,” Tails had to speak. He hated it, because he had never seen Sonic so happy, but they had a mission. “You know Maddie’s gonna kill you, right?”

Shadow reached up and clenched his hands around Sonic’s waist, his fingers digging in to the point that it probably hurt. His brother didn’t even flinch. “I’ll die happy,” he said, his voice soft and fond.

Oh boy. Knuckles seemed to pick up on the issue, because he stepped forward, pressing a hand to Sonic’s shoulder. “You won’t be able to die happy if we cannot find the chaos emerald here.”

“It’s three miles west,” the white bat said, landing in front of them, nodding in the direction. She smirked at them. “We were tracking it when we stumbled across the second part of our little mission.”

“Second part?” Tails said, a jolt of unease shooting up his spine.

The white bat pointed with her thumb at Sonic, who had managed to peel himself away from Shadow. They seemed to be conversing telepathically, resulting in the dark hedgehog sighing and unwrapping his hands. Instead, Sonic offered a hand that he took, helping him to his feet. “Shadow here was determined to track down his little boyfriend.”

“He’s not my boyfriend,” Shadow grumbled, not letting go of Sonic’s hand.

“Anyway,” she said, smiling. “The name’s Rouge, and that’s Omega,” The robot beeped but did not give a further response. Stone waved and, despite himself, Tails waved back. “And you probably know him. Anyway, since we’ve tracked each other down and the lovebirds,” Shadow rolled his eyes but relaxed as Sonic bumped him. “Probably won’t let each other go, let’s head out, shall we?”

“Race you there?” Sonic offered.

Rouge’s nose wrinkled. “You’ll beat us.” “That’s not a no~”

Before anyone could say another word, Shadow’s air shoes activated and the duo took off in a glint of red energy. In the distance, they split up, red and blue circling each other.

Knuckles sighed. “Yeah, I figured they would be insufferable.”

Rouge chuckled, her white fur catching the colors. “At least they’re happy.”

Thoughts on the Sonic 3 trailer:

First of all, HOLY S***!! This trailer was frikkin amazing!! :D

Shadow looks so badass, and just from the three lines we hear from him in the trailer I can tell Keanu is gonna be great in the movie!

I'm also glad to see that they won't be shying away from the darker elements of Shadow's origin.This movie is definitely gonna make me cry I know it...

Also, Eggman finally has his chubby gut! lol

Speaking of, it seems that Eggman and Stone aren't the ones to awaken Shadow as they seem unaware of the situation until Sonic goes to them asking for help. I can see why they changed it because if Eggman was teaming up with Shadow, like in SA2, it would probably feel a bit too similar to the plot of the second movie, with Eggman's partnership with Knuckles. So it's interesting that it seems that Shadow could be working alone in this version of the story. Actually, that brings up another aspect...

WTF!! GERALD IS STILL ALIVE???

This is definitely an interesting turn, and it brings up so many questions! The most obvious question is HOW?? Well, some people think that Gerald might have been changed to being Eggman's father rather than grandfather to justify him still being around. But maybe he is still Eggman's grandfather but he was in suspended animation for all these years, like Shadow. Or maybe he's a ghost or hallucination? Or maybe it's time travel, who knows! XD Eggman called him "pappap" which could mean either father or grandfather, depending on who you ask.

So, if that really is Gerald "in the saggy flesh" could that mean that he's actively manipulating Shadow into destroying the world, or is he going to be somehow instrumental in stopping him? I'm really interested to see what direction they go with this!

Also, it looks like the Ark has been changed up and is significantly smaller. I wonder if this shot is showing it going up to space?

And in this shot that appears to show Tails flying from the Ark, you can see some sort of attachments on the front that resemble Eggman's, or rather Gerald's, mustache.

I love this Japanese Chuck E. Cheese-like place called the "Chao Garden". lol

Also, hello Shadow 2005 game reference!

Eggman actually getting to hug Gerald is something I never expected to see, but damn is it wholesome! ^^

And I really dig Eggman's new mobile base that resembles a giant crab! lol

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble, so I'll just end this by saying that I am so effing excited for this movie! Just a few more months! I can't frikkin wait to see it! :D
