just finished watching the Sonic 3 movie

Sonic 3 was one of those surreal moments for me. I'm watching the 3rd installment to a live action Sonic film franchise, and I'm looking at Shadow The Hedgehog on a huge IMAX screen...

Things I noticed in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie: (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)

- “We don’t know if it’s godzilla or hello kitty down there”, said by Sonic before they meet Shadow. It’s funny because Shadow is both. A powerful alien monster with fluffy ears and a little snout!

- Sonic repeatedly abandoning his friends to pursue things by himself before it came to breaking point when they argue about the Master Emerald. He chases after Shadow on the motorbike despite Tails warning him not to, he runs into the GUN shield despite both Tails and Knuckles screaming that he wouldn’t make it. I like this because it shows how impulsive and independent he’s used to being, and builds up his choices in the final acts. He’s always had a little trouble slowing down.

- Robotnik saying he’s undesirable to all possible genders, not just women… pansexual Robotnik canon?!?!

- Tails being all cute and the most excited for the live show in the Chao Garden cafe, reminds us that although he’s a genius - he’s still a child!

- Whenever Shadow’s in the dark, his eyes glow red! Very spooky and alien

- My friend pointed out that at the end after Knuckles saves both Tails and Sonic from falling, they land in a corn field. This might be a reference to aliens and their cornfield patterns

- Gerald’s true intentions and uncaring nature towards Robotnik was always apparent in subtle interactions throughout the movie. Robotnik holds his hand up for high-fives but gets left hanging, he asks for a chest bump and gets ignored. Gerald never actually cared for Robotnik, he was just a means to an end. RIP Eggman

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Thoughts NO SPOILERS

Okay.

So.

I am looking at this from two perspectives. A MAJOR Sonic fan, and a Cinephile.

Starting with the Cinephile brain. Yes, there are some problems I can think of with the movie. Sure. Whatever. This movie was not perfect and it was never going to be. I am not gonna go into specifics because I wanna avoid spoiling anything for others who might wanna see it. Although I will say; many of the problems I had with the movie are rather minor and did not effect my enjoyment of the movie in the slightest.

With that said, as a sonic fan: This was a celebration of the franchise. If you are a sonic fan, you need to see this movie. This was SO fun, there where tons of easter eggs, references, and little moments that celebrate the franchise. The comedy here was really pretty fun, and while not every joke landed, I found myself chuckling and having a good time. Oh and the ACTION, man? Fuckin' peak. It was incredible, I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Even with me saying the movie has some flaws or whatever, none of that really matters to me if I am being perfectly honest. Instead of being just sugary fanservice there is some actual substance here, and I always appreciate that.

I am so glad this movie is projected to do well. My viewing audience had a great time and even got an applause at the end of the movie. Also, do NOT miss those post credit scenes. Absolutely hyped, trust me.

TLDR: While there are some problems, I loved this movie. I wanna see it again another two or three times. This was SO fun. Easily the best one. Go watch it!!

was it a good movie, no

was there way too much dumbed down exposition and nonsensical action sequences and bad animation and Jim Carrey juxtaposed with actual child-murder-drama? yes

but did I like their Shadow characterization, even though I can see how fan-servicey all the imagery was, oh yes

They did a really good job with Shadow in this game.

They got him back to who he was in the first game he appeared in—while adding in how his experiences since his time as a naive test-subject have changed him.

I missed the Redeemed Shadow from the Final Story of SA2. That version of him, those moments where he’s decided very quickly who he is, “I must destroy all the evil the Professor has created!” Or “How are you doing, Sonic?” Or “I’ll take care of this, while you run to get the Chaos Emeralds!”

All the lighthearted confidence in who he is now and what he has to do—all the concern for his comrades who just a second ago he was claiming to be so much better than—all the humility of ‘you get the Emeralds, I’ll hold ‘em off’ and ‘maybe you’re the Ultimate Life Form, Sonic’—I loved that snippet of Shadow we got to see.

Then he falls and “dies,” and from that point on I got treated to angsty I-Don’t-Know-Who-I-Am Shadow. Closely followed by Grimly-Passive-Agressively-Duty-Bound Shadow.

No more humbly completing a mission for the good of others. Very little demonstrative concern for others. No more compliments to comrades. Made me sad.

But you know what, it made sense. Because even though he’s learned that he’s supposed to be living for others, he doesn’t get to have his family. So that’s sad. He essentially has to live for people he doesn’t feel close to. Add on top of that the Dark Side, the fact that a sadistic race of monsters is in his blood, and of course he’d be bitter.

But in this game Maria speaks directly to Shadow who’s been through all that. All that garbage with the Black Arms, all that garbage with almost destroying the world himself out of revenge—Maria talks to that Shadow and reminds him of who he is.

So now he has anger and he has reason to be detached, and bitter…but he’s also been reminded to choose not to be detached and bitter.

That’s a much more fleshed-out character than I thought SEGA would develop him into, after everything
