What We Get Wrong About Dark Sonic
I find Dark Sonic incredibly interesting.
I’ve said this before, but Dark Sonic represents an overflow of Sonic’s negative emotions, the ones he usually suppresses: anger, sadness, and fear.
However, many people believe that Dark Sonic is somehow a betrayal of Sonic as a character (even Ian Flynn, reportedly, but I’ve yet to see an official source). Sonic is meant to be a beacon of optimism. Sonic is meant to be the pillar of hope when all else fails. Sonic is meant to be the last one standing, no matter what.
In this sense, sure, Dark Sonic contradicts the notion that Sonic is “uncorruptable,” but I think that depends on how we define corruption.
I see it two ways:
1) Corruption by way of losing faith, through dishonesty and fraud. 2) Corruption by way of a forceful shift from one state of being to another.
In the first sense, corruption occurs when someone’s paradigm is shifted through lies, cheating, or manipulation. It’s a conscious mental shift. In the second sense, corruption occurs when something (or someone) is co-opted and changed without its will or influence, like data corruption, or a shift in the meaning of a word or image. It’s a literal, physical and/or metaphysical shift.
There’s a saying that floats around the fandom that says, “Shadow is just ‘Sonic, if Sonic had one really bad day’,” and I think that makes sense. Shadow is jaded and cynical because of how the world has hurt him, but he still wants to do right by people—just like Sonic. What separates Sonic from Shadow, however, is Sonic’s tenant optimism and positive paradigm. Without those differences, Sonic has endless reasons to be as cynical as Shadow, or even more so.
So, Sonic doesn’t let himself feel those feelings for very long, and especially not when other people are around. He pours everything into a clean, neat bottle, with a tight screw-on cap, right?
What happens when something tampers with that bottle?
Dark Sonic is a forceful corruption of body but not of mind. Let’s talk about it.
How Dark Sonic Works
What I think people misunderstand most about Dark Sonic is that it’s not an intentional state of being. It never was.
Dark Sonic is the polar opposite to Super Sonic, which is achieved when Sonic harnesses the positive energy of the Chaos Emeralds. If Sonic wanted to harness the power of the emeralds for the wrong reasons and his heart accessed the negative energy rather than the positive, he could possibly bring about Dark Sonic willingly. This, however, would likely never happen because that is the betrayal of Sonic’s character that everyone worries about.
That said, the only reason Dark Sonic ever appears is because of a mix of Sonic’s pure rage over Black Narcissist physically assaulting Chris and Cosmo and the presence of hundreds of the Metarex’s fake Chaos Emeralds, which possess an aura clearly shown to impact Sonic and make him ill.
Sonic’s first interaction with negative Chaos energy from the fake emeralds is filled with discomfort and even disgust. Sonic reacting to the negative Chaos energy poorly is critical, as it showcases that it’s seeking him out, not vice versa.
When Sonic was as triggered as he was, the negative energy from the fakes harnessed his emotions and corrupted him. It was a complete, freak accident.
This situation is very similar to Darkspine Sonic, the in-game equivalent to Dark Sonic from Sonic and the Secret Rings. Darkspine Sonic only surfaces when Sonic is severely triggered after Shahra starts to betray him, Erazor Djinn murders her (she sacrifices herself for Sonic), and he sees Erazor Djinn’s final form about to destroy the storybook world. In his shock and anger, the Secret Rings of Sadness, Rage, and Hate target him, painfully turning him into Darkspine Sonic. Once again, external energies corrupt him at the height of his emotional vulnerability.
Sonic never seeks out the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds because his heart is good. When the negative energy seeks him out in such overwhelming waves, it corrupts his abilities, alters them, and pulls them out to play.
But—
If it’s simply a matter of fake Chaos Emeralds, then why can Sonic use Tails’ fake Chaos Emerald in Sonic Adventure 2 without any problems? I posit this to the fact that Tails might have a better understanding of the balanced nature of the Chaos Emeralds (in that they are powered by both good and evil), while Eggman and Dark Oak have only ever used (or desired to use) the Chaos Emeralds for evil.
Recall Eggman’s laser at the beginning of Sonic Unleashed and Perfect Chaos in Sonic Adventure. Both uses of the chaos emeralds drained them of their power—their negative power, that is. (Albeit through different means based on the lore of each game), Sonic is still able to restore and harness the emeralds’ power because he relies on the positive energy of the emeralds. As intelligent as he is, I imagine that Eggman (as well as the Metarex) has a hard time replicating the intricate nature and balance of the Chaos Emeralds because their hearts are filled with hatred and turmoil, so unwilling to heed the perspectives of others. The power is there, sure, but not the heart.
~Chaos is power. Power is enriched by the heart~
Tikal's Prayer
I think the difference between Tails’ fake emerald and every other fake emerald we’ve seen in canon is marked by the fact that both Eggman’s and the Metarex’s fakes disintegrate after excessive use (i.e., Chaos Control), but Tails’ fake remains intact.
The Metarex's emerald disintegrates upon excessive use
Eggman's fake emeralds can't hold their form upon excessive use
Tails' fake emerald is intact and ultimately used to stop the Eclipse Canon from firing
In short, Tails’ emerald is simply a better fake, more accurate to the originals.
also, I refuse to talk about how dumb it is that Sonic was able to use a fake Chaos Emerald to do Chaos Control for the first time. However, it is canon, and therefore relevant to my point.
Another key problem cited in Sonic X is just how many fake emeralds there are. One emerald pales in comparison to hundreds. Sonic feels all the latent negative energy consume him because that energy is a corruption, itself.
It’s not that Sonic gets so angry that he just gives in to darkness, it’s that darkness captures him when he’s in extreme emotional distress and his guard is down. Dark Sonic is the result of negative, unstable, potent Chaos energy clinging to him, using his latent Chaos powers as a vessel when he least expects it and, thus, is powerless against it.
I think I can best prove this by contrasting Dark Sonic with Sonic’s other intimate encounter with darkness…
Sonic Unleashed, Dark Gaia, and the Werehog
I’ve spoken at length about this game and this specific scene, already, so kindly forgive my hyper-brief summary this time around!
When Dark Gaia’s “weight issues” cause its essence to disperse around the globe, many people fall influence to Dark Gaia’s despair, losing faith and hope in the world. Nothing like the influences of Chaos energy, but enough of an influence that much of the world feels it. A core aspect of the game’s plot is that Sonic, distinctly, does not. In the cutscene No Reason, Sonic asks Chip why he stays the same despite the darkness inside his heart while so many others change at night. Chip answers simply, saying that Sonic’s too strong to lose himself and that part of his good will is because he never doubts himself, even when he’s on his own.
The difference is that while Sonic undergoes a physical transformation, he never loses faith or gives up hope—made especially clear by the fact that Professor Pickle, once as hopeful as Sonic, eventually does lose hope.
Also key to note that Amy also never loses hope.
Unleashed is just another fun, high-stakes adventure for Sonic; there’s never a moment where he’s aggressively triggered by something or when his personal morals are ever tainted. Irritated, maybe. Flustered, even. Never at a loss. The closest we see Sonic come to this is when he loses the werehog form to Dark Gaia before the final battle. He falls to his knees, worn and exhausted, and tells Chip to run because he doesn’t want him to get caught up in the mess. Yet even then he’s not giving up.
That’s why Sonic’s heightened emotional state is so important to the conversation. When Sonic’s will is intact, he’s much stronger, but when he’s triggered by something and his defences are down, it’s much easier for corrupting forces around him to take hold.
Mind over Matter
Even with the parameters for Dark Sonic’s appearance established, something that stands out to me about Sonic’s encounters with dark energies, and something I see as additional evidence that Dark Sonic is only a literal, physical corruption and not a corruption of his paradigm, is that Sonic is still in control of himself—to an extent.
Even as he seethes in his amplified rage, Dark Sonic never inflicts harm on the innocent. After Gold and Silver are destroyed, it’s not expressly clear if Sonic intends to stop or fight Black Narcissist, but Eggman implies that Sonic was fighting Gold and Silver until there was quite literally nothing left. Sonic was given a target to attack, and he kept his focus there, even when other enemies presented themselves.
This also goes for the Werehog and Darkspine Sonic.
He also has the mind to listen to reason—from Eggman, of all people—and stop when it’s clear that he’s finished what he set out to do. Sonic channels his anger to where it needs to be, and it’s clear that Sonic’s moral code and paradigm on life are thoroughly intact.
The only thing that changes is that he’s no longer imposing his usual limits. Sonic is stupidly powerful, even without any power ups. If he ever wanted to kill Eggman, he would have by now. If he ever wanted to kill anyone, he would have by now (and technically, he has).
Sonic throws Erazor Djinn's lamp into a pit, never to resurface, effectively trapping him and ending his livelihood indefinitely.
However, Sonic holds back because he doesn’t want to be an arbiter of justice—he doesn’t want to deprive someone’s chance to be good unless it’s been clear that they cannot be redeemed.
Why I Care About This
It is no secret that I believe that Sonic is a highly emotional character—far more emotional than many give him credit for. It bears repeating that Sonic’s emotions are very big and can be cataclysmic when left unchecked…
…but that’s just part of growing up—growing up as a hero and, damn it, even just a kid.
Dark Sonic isn’t a case of Sonic giving himself to darkness, nor is it a perversion of Sonic’s character. It’s an energetic, chaotically-charged version of Sonic when he is at his angriest—and even then it’s not enough to change his morals or make him lash out unjustly.
Dark Sonic is cathartic, in a way, and I definitely think it deserves its place in canon.

Why Sonic Prime Shouldn’t Be Canon
There will be 0 disrespect to anyone involved in this post.
Introduction
Think whatever you want to think and make your own conclusions after reading this. Prime is an entertaining show. This is only for whoever wonders why I talk about this show a certain way. Yes, the consistency in the franchise is already shattered to pieces, (no pun intended) but the excuse implies the mistakes in the past shouldn’t be improved upon. Making things worst doesn’t fix anything. Also, give the franchise a little credit, there’s more obvious reasons to believe this show isn’t canon then stuff in the games and IDW.
Why Are We Told Prime Is Canon
1. The writer for the games/comics and the director stated Prime was canon. I assume in order to sell the show and make it seem more important than it is. That’s not even an insult because so far, Prime impacts nothing in canon.
Ian Flynn: “It doesn’t matter, b/c Prime wipes itself out. It’s something after Advance 3, but otherwise, it’s moot. I didn’t want to sour anyone’s expectations or investment by spoiling how Prime resolves, that’s all. If you enjoyed it, awesom. Savor it. If you didn’t, then you can safely ignore it. Simple as that.”
2. While I don’t remember who said this, it’s also been stated Prime went through changes. It was originally meant to be written as its own thing and hilariously ended up feeling less canon because of this change. Which you’ll probably notice in a bit. Long story short Sonic Prime, like the movies and shows, is a disposable adaptation you can love or hate.
3. Aside from Sonic and Shadow, you aren’t able to spend enough time with the OG cast or world, so you’d need to know and understand them outside of Prime. Which debatably isn’t enough, but that’s a can of worms I feel plenty have already opened up, so I’ll only simplify it later. In the end, the show never gets time to establish itself in the OG world. Which has a terrible impact on the writing, but let’s move on.
Side Note: No, the shatterverse crew don’t count in my opinion. While they are similar to the OGs they are still their own characters with separate personalities and issues in their own worlds. They are similar, but not the same.
Evidence
Prime feels more like an origin story without the continuity of the games.
Example 1: Green Hill is Sonic and his friend’s home. Despite the games and IDW have them live everywhere that isn’t Green Hill. Classic timeline included. They barely talk about the place. I recommend watching “Where The Heck Does Sonic Live?” on YouTube. If you want the short of it, I’ll explain a few points and add my own as well.
Here’s most of the different homes these characters lived in.
Station Square, the Mystic Ruins, Emerald Town, and others use to be homes they stayed in and they’re never mentioned. It’s like they put the modern cast into the classic timeline. Which still had them not live in Green Hill. Heck, Shadow, Rouge, and Big are shown in Green Hill too and they didn’t even exist during the classic era.
This is how Green Hill is seen in IDW.
Sure looks like people use to live in this place. Sarcasm aside, Green Hill either wasn’t special enough for them to keep living in or they never lived there before and this was conjured up because Green Hill is constantly used in the games.
Even people who knows the bare minimum about Sonic lore would understand how baloney this is. Especially since Sonic and the gang has been established to be found in other places. Which is shown in the Origin cutscenes. They don’t clarify in the show who exactly lives in Green Hill and who doesn’t. They treat it like everyone’s home. Shows how much we know about these characters within Sonic Prime, doesn’t it?
Example 2: No other group of Sonic characters, locations, or worlds are ever mentioned/referenced. In Prime the blue blur meeting Chaos!Sonic should’ve reminded him of Metal!Sonic, but he talks as if he’s never seen another version of himself in his life. “Is that a… knock off me?” The lack of robot knowledge in this show is crazy when given more errors.
“Robots without flickies? Now that’s new.” I believe everyone knows how false this line is. Also, Orbot and Cubot doesn’t exist until Colors. (though Orbot is in Unleashed) Which is a problem because Prime is suppose to take place directly after Advanced. Which had several games before Colors. Where they didn’t exist.
Example 3: The OG cast though similar, still have their differences.
Big: He’s treated like a core member of the team when he’s not in anything else. Bro doesn’t even get much to do or say at all. He’s just there for the most part.
Knuckles: He meets Sonic in a completely different setting then in actual canon and doesn’t seem to live on Angel Island for some reason. At least not by what was shown.
Eggman: Still relatively fine, but teaming up with anyone even himself never turns out well. He usually doesn’t care for sharing his spotlight.
Rouge: Same thing as Big besides Dream Team. In the games/comics she usually does her own thing. And is also more sneaky and unpredictable while Prime shows off her more leadership side. She’s kind of half and half in the same to different category.
Tails: Surprisingly more closed off then usual and almost seems to switch sides with Sonic in the personality department. Emotionally that is.
Amy: She’s more of a motherly figure than anything else. Amy’s bird friend is pink instead of blue like in SA1. They also treat it like it’s always been with her but hasn’t. She’s also incredibly calm and collected compared to how she was during the 2000s. The time the Advance games where coming out. She was written pretty differently to say the least.
Not to mention one line in the entire show is the only indication of Amy’s crush on Sonic. It was implied not shown.
Sonic: He’s almost treated as an amalgamation of different variations before him. Except it’s his first time getting into an issue he isn’t ready to handle. Because he caused it. On top of that, this guy also carries most of his friends emotional traits. Amys’ excitement, Tails’ saddens, and Knuckles’ anger. Here’s why.
Prime!Sonic seems to be naturally affectionate then in canon since he hugs almost everyone in it. He’s also more emotionally triggered, childish, and inexperience while Game!Sonic isn’t. And has never been shown to be either. Not even in the IDW comics or games with Classic!Sonic. A younger version of him. Don’t get me started on the differences to the 2000 games like Advanced. Game!Sonic then was more introverted while Prime!Sonic is very extroverted. He also panics a bunch. As if he’s not use to terrible things happening frequently.
He can be very wimpy and whiny when it comes to confrontations. Which was never a thing before in any other media. At least not to the point where he’s begging and pleading to people over and over again. I’ll even admit this Sonic isn’t the smartest either. He’s the Sonic you’d be the most convinced to believe is a teenage boy. Besides Movie!Sonic.
Of course Prime!Sonic is still Sonic, but he’s as much of a Sonic as every other version of him. He’s not the same guy who use to not be a fan of hugs. Who can deal with atrocities without freaking out once. The character who hasn’t even officially cried up to this point. Who is just now starting to open up and is still having trouble with it. The silly hedgehog isn’t too out of character but is enough to not be called the same character. Sure, Sonic’s characterization is inconsistent in the games, but I’d say the 2010s is less out of character and more one noted. He at least carries these traits even if not written well.
- The “sentimental” line in S1 Ep6 is one of the few out of character things he says. Even if the blue blur thought this, he’d never say it out loud.
Shadow: He’s the best written character in the show. Not to mention the most accurate to how he is in canon. Even compared to some of the games and comics. He’s the true MVP of Sonic Prime and has the most common sense. I only hate how he’s literally pushed to the curve in every season. And how Shadow’s backstory is never referenced. Only implied by Sonic screaming his name when he plummets to his doom. But I’d argue that’s more so because Shadow is the last person left who isn’t implied to be dead. Sure, it reminds people of SA2, but that’s all it really is. A reminder not a direct reference.
I will clarify I don’t dislike the show for being different. I dislike the show calling itself canon despite it’s differences.
Conclusion
I know Prime “wipes itself out” but the original world doesn’t have the same continuity of the games either. The established world and lore in Prime is barely connected to the Games due to the writing, so wiping the shatterverse out doesn’t help. These may be small details but if you’re a person who might be interested in getting into the fandom it becomes small details that makes big differences.
I’m not saying if you think the show is canon you’re wrong. Actually you are 100% correct. It’s been confirmed multiple times and the deed was already done. I just don't think it should be. Does it really matter? It depends on what you think. Is Sonic Prime being canon a bad thing? I’d say yes and no. While I don’t think it was the best move, as long as Sonic Prime exists on its own, there’s nothing to worry about. Prime being canon isn’t a crime. It just makes no sense. I’ll leave it at that.
Stay Creative! 💜

Is Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Canon?
So while previously I have suggested Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games isn't canon, there is a possibility it could be.
So for starters the games have established Mario & Sonic are arriving at this earth from their own respective worlds. This isn't impossible for Mario since characters have achieved dimensional travel before, and Mario & friends have visited what is called Tour Earth on multiple occasions. Sonic on the other hand while being from his own version of Earth, the Olympic Games are canon to the Prime Sonic.
Now a supposed contradiction that makes Olympic Games not to Mario is the oddness in the heights. However, this is probably explained by Sonic and friends eating Super Mushrooms which explains why they are bigger than they normally are.
Finally it is has been said by Miyamoto in the games it is always the same Mario, and this would probably have to extend out into the Olympic Games as well. So yeah, the Olympic Games are probably canon.

I know a lot of people knock Roger Craig Smith’s voice performance as Sonic, but personally I think he killed it in Frontiers. The deeper direction they chose to go with fits better with his voice than being higher pitched. Also I think Ian Flynn’s writing totally helped.
I still think the boom TV show was his best performance though!

More Sonic Knowledge for your brain skulls
we haven't gotten a Sonic Character with connected eyes since 2006 (Jet from Riders and Silver from 06)
And Amy is the only female character with connected eyes since Sonic X-Treme was cancelled (the game Tiara was gonna be in)
In total, we only got 3 modern-era (1998-Present) characters with connected eyes. Shadow, Jet, and Silver.
Every Character designed from IDW (Ex. Tangle, Surge, that purple one) has seperate eyes.
And yes, Knuckles' eyes are connected. They're been misdrawn as seperate many times by Sonic Comic Artists, notably Archie and the artist who worked on "The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog" who was from IDW.
While his eyes aren't connected, he rarely lifts his brow unless extremely sad or suprised, which is a rarity. Knuckles is never overly happy
Sadness still dosen't lift it much (though judging by Sonic & Mickey Model sheets it should), he's not like SUPER UPSET about it in these screenshots (Sonic X) (SA1 has an issue where Amy & Knuckles' Sad Faces are modeled wrong, especially noticeable on amy when you compare her to sonic) but anything further would raise it. Though Eyelids are honestly a bit more fitting for Knuckles specifically
Sonic X has the right idea but raised it a little too high
The first and 4th nibroc rock images are more accurate.
It's a eybrow Ridge, not empty seperation space like actual separated eye characters (example: Tails, Blaze, Cream, Bug, Rouge)
UPDATE!!: He lifts his brow (revealing the connection) in Sonic Advance 2!!!

You: I hate Sonic Prime because it's canon.
Me: Sonic Prime is canon???
You: Yep! It was confirmed to be canon and take place somewhere after Advance 3. That's crazy right?
Me: Super crazy, but if it bothers you so much you should just do what I do.
You: What's that?
Me: Anytime someone mentions that Prime is canon, acknowledge and then immediately forget about it.
You: What are you talking about? How could you just FORGET that? Aren't you a Sonic fan? Don't you know the rules? Sonic canon determines how we think of the characters, it constructs how they're presented both externally and internally. Insisting that Sonic Prime is canon is an insult to these characters and the world that Sega has worked so hard to build!
Me: Sonic Prime is canon???
#Literally anytime I see people arguing about how Prime is canon#Like... SO?#So what?#That means Ian Flynn gets to make a passing reference to the shatterverse in a game down the line#Like y'all who cares?#I'm sorry if you don't like Sonic characterization but I feel like people tend to get REALLY up in arms over stuff when its like...#What are the CONSEQUENCES of that?#Because if we're worried about character degradation I'm not seeing it#But also I love IDW so what do I know?#Sonic#Sonic Prime#Sonic Canon

Sonic Media with weird Canoncity
Classic Games:
With South Island, West Side Island and Angel Island all somehow being home to the Chaos Emeralds and the color and number inconsistancy, it's implied there were multiple sets of Chaos Emeralds before Sonic Adventure retconned it
The Special Stages were described as distortions in Sonic 1, in Triple Trouble they called Subspace and Fang lives in them, however Ian Flynn has retconned the Special Stages as non canon
South Island is depicted as a mystical island that moves around, however not only is this never shown or stated again but also later games have people living on the Island, it’s also stated that the Chaos Emeralds hold South Island afloat and if one gets stolen then the whole Island will sink however that’s most likely no longer canon
Amy was originally 8 like Tails
West Side Island is stated to have Gods who sealed away the Chaos Emeralds, this most likely no longer canon
Knuckles was stated to be the guardian of both Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds, however the Chaos Emerald retcon only him the guardian of the Master Emerald
Knuckles is stated to have friends on Angel Island who nickname his “Knuckle”, we have even see houses in Sonic Adventure’s Ice Cap, however it has since been retconned that Knuckles is the only person on Angel Island aside from Chao and Baby Animals
According to Christian Whitehead, the Super Emeralds and Hyper Sonic are canon but Sonic Team doesn’t want them to appear again due to not wanting "multi-tier power level stuff" like Dragon Ball in Sonic, according to Takashi Iizuka, the Super Emeralds got sealed away into another dimension but it’s never explained how, why or where
Sonic Spinball:
Despite the game being based off Sonic Satam with the game taking place on Mobius and the Freedom Fighters and Scratch appearing as cameos, it has been confirmed canon by Ian Flynn, Sonic Origins and the Sonic Channel, Ian has also clarified the cameos are non canon
It's never explained how and why Eggman traveled to Mobius, same goes for Sonic and Tails
Sonic and Tails also ride on a unnamed plane, that same plane appears in Sonic Learns to Drive from the 30th Anniversary Special
The game has 16 Chaos Emerald and they're all blue (though you could argue they're Mobius's Chaos Emeralds and not Earth's)
Sonic Drift Series:
Amy has a sentient car named Breeze, he is never mentioned again, gets replaced in Sonic R, however he returns in Amy's New Hobby as a cameo
Knuckles Chaotix:
Despite being retconned as non canon, with Heroes being their canon depictions, which is why Charmy doesn’t recognize Eggman, however it has been re-retconned as canon thanks to TailsTube
Espio is never mentioned to be a Ninja and his character is a private detective who’s envious of Knuckles for unknown reasons
Vector is a teen and is depicted as a Christian
Charmy’s age is never stated, his personality is stated to be mature and moody and his character is an athlete who is the self proclaimed dearest insect in the world
Heavy and Bomb’s true allegiance is never confirmed and they’re never seen again
Metal Sonic Kai was originally the name of Metal’s rebuilt body, but was retconned to be the name of his unnamed giant red form
Sonic the Fighters (and Dynamite Dux):
The game has 8 Chaos Emeralds, however the 8th one was retconned to be the Warp Topaz in the Fang the Hunter Miniseries
Eggman builds the Death Egg II, but goes back to rebuilding the original in later games
Bean and Bark were introduced as more of Sonic's friends, however they become villains later
Bean is stated to be the son of Bin the Duck from Dynamite Dux, despite being a Woodpecker, it's unknown if this is still canon however both Bin and Pin cameo in Classic IDW Specials
In the intro, Rocket Metal, aka Mecha Sonic 29 appears, unknown if he’s canon
Honey the Cat's canon existence is iffy, however that's only because the character is owned by SEGA AM2 and not Sonic Team
Sonic Adventure:
In Final Egg, Mecha Sonic Mark III is stored in a stasis tube alongside Metal Sonic, no info is given to him at all, he later cameos in IDW Winter Jam
In the US Script, the pink and white flickies are stated to be the parents of Birdie, in JP, they’re stated to be his siblings
In Sonic 3&K, it’s stated the Gods of Angel Island made the island float in the sky, not only are they not mentioned but it’s stated the Knuckles Clan used the Master Emerald to make it float in the sky
Sonic Shuffle:
This game is ignored, and to my knowledge has zero references in Sonic Dream Team
Sonic Battle:
In the US Script, Emerl is stated to a type of robot called a Gizoid that was created by the Fourth Great Civilization, in the JP Script, the Fourth Great Civilization is never mentioned and Gizoid is just Emerl’s original name
The Characters use a bunch of abilities that are never used again, the weirdest one is Amy being able to create clones of Sonic
Amy was stated to live in an apartment in Station Square, but now she lives in Central City
Shadow can use Chaos Control without a Chaos Emerald and is stated to be able to using his memory of Maria, unknown if this is still canon
Chaos Gamma is never seen again
This game has Shadow with his full memories, Shadow 05 ignored this, it's safe to say this game and by extension Advance 3, were retconned to take place after Shadow 05
Sonic Advance 3:
The US manual states Eggman split the Earth in 7 parts, while the JP manual states Eggman split the Earth in 7 pockets of reality, the JP one is most likely canon or else Dark Gaia would've been unleashed
Gemerl becomes weirdly absent and never mentioned until IDW, (though could make the argument that Rush and Free Riders take place before Advance 3)
Shadow 05:
The canon route is never confirmed other than the fact Shadow did the hero mission in Cryptic Castle and made it to Cosmic Fall
Shadow gains two extra forms, Hero Shadow and Dark Shadow, Dark Shadow reappears in Shadow Gens’s narration intro but Hero Shadow never appears again
In the English Script during the Devil Doom boss fights, Eggman explains to Shadow that he was rescued by one of his robots at the end of SA2, in the JP script, Eggman states it was one of his mechs, presumably the Eggwalker
Sonic’s Home
In Classic Games, Sonic was stated to live on South Island
In Sonic Battle, it was stated he lives in Emerald Town
We see his home in Sonic Harmony Artwork, Sonic Shuffle and the beginning of Sonic and the Secret Rings
However it’s been retconned that Sonic doesn’t have a house
Sonic 06:
Due to the Game being rushed, it’s never explained why Blaze was sent to Silver’s Future other than the fact the game was meant to be a prequel to Rush, it’s also been confirmed that Iblis is still bound to Blaze’s soul so it’s possible the game was an origin to her pyrokinesis and her gameplay could be non canon
Silver’s ending depicted Blaze dying as Iblis gets sealed inside her, however Ian Flynn claims it’s actually Blaze transforming into Burning Blaze because she had the Sol Emeralds with her the entire time during 06?
Elise apparently had the future version of the Blue Chaos Emerald the whole time and somehow every emerald detector used in the series never picked it up
Shadow is stated to have a 200 IQ, this is never brought up again
Amy can turn invisible, she never does this again
Sonic Rivals:
Eggman Nega is a villain in both series, however in the Rush games he’s Eggman’s Sol Dimensions counterpart and Blaze’s archenemy, but in Rivals he’s Eggman’s descendant who hates Eggman for ruining the Robotnik name and is Silver’s archenemy, the Rivals one being the canon version
The Sonic Rivals series being canon is weird itself as despite it being the canon appearances of Silver and Eggman Nega’s current origins, the series was never released in Japan
Sonic Riders:
People assumed this series wasn’t canon due to everyone’s new outfits, the futuristic cities and Babylon Rogues only appearing in these games, however they’ve been confirmed canon, even with a Sonic PICT artwork confirming Metal City is near the Mystic Ruins
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games:
Despite Crossover games not being canon:
Eggman Nega’s portal technology from Winter Games DS appears in a Sonic Channel Comic
A Sonic Channel Cover Story mentions the that Cream was an assistant for the Olympics
Sonic Colors (+Runners):
The game introduces the infamous Two Worlds retcon because of 90s mofos complaining about humans being in Sonic, which Eggman says he wants to conquer “Sonic’s World” instead of Earth, it was reretconned later
Both the Console and DS version are somehow canon, with the DS version heaving exclusive Wisps that reappear, introduction of the Mother Wisp and Silver and Blaze meeting, despite this, the DS content wasn’t included in Sonic Colors Ultimate
In the English Script, Nega Wisps are stated to be Wisps drained of their power, in the JP script, Nega Wisps are angered Wisps, the JP explanation explains why the Nega Wisps still exist but Rise of Wisps oddly uses the US canon
Sonic Runners gave an explanation as to why the Wisps are on Earth, stating they liked it after the events of Colors, however when Runners got discontinued, it got decanonized
Sonic Lost World 3DS:
Despite the game having the same plot as Console, it’s stated not to be canon despite:
Exclusive Wisps reappearing
Tails’s Lab from that version appearing in TailsTube and Sonic PICT artwork
Sonic Forces + Speed Battle:
The game infamously retcons Classic Sonic to be from another dimension despite being the same one from Generations who was past Sonic, this was reretconned later
The game states Eggman created the Phantom Ruby despite Sonic Mania and the tie in comics saying otherwise, even with reretcon, the Phantom Ruby Prototypes are still a mystery
According to Nibroc Rock, Speed Battle is somehow canon with the only explanation being every character in that game is a phantom copy but its not explained when it takes place or how there’s copies of Movie, LEGO and Angry Birds characters
The weird Post Forces Era:
Sonic Mania Adventures was originally non canon but it’s been canonized to take place during the Angel Island section of Encore Mode somehow
Team Sonic Racing, the first IDW saga, TailsTube 2 and the Sonic Channel stories all somehow take place after Forces and even state it was their last battle with Eggman
With TSR, the track Frozen Junkyard was stated to be a scrapyard for Eggman’s machines which is why a Death Egg Robot appears, Amy and Vector’s vehicles also appear in Post Metal Virus IDW, however this issue seems to have been fixed as the Sonic Channel Cover Stories state the Death Egg Robots were created on Egg Planet Park, making the game take place before Forces
Sticks the Badger:
Her only canon appearance is in the Sonic Channel comics
She’s mentioned by Amy in the English version of Frontiers
TMOSTH:
Evan Stanley claims it’s or canon, Chris Hernandez claims the real answer will be revealed someday
Barry and the Conductor appear in IDW
Sonic Speed Simulator:
Ian Flynn states he was told it was non canon but Nibroc Rock states he was told it was canon which is why dead characters couldn’t be playable, the current answer seems to be that game is temporarily non canon until they find a way to canonize it

Sonic's Legacy
I love how deeply Sonic impacts the people he meets simply by being himself.
This adorable post-credits scene from Sonic Colours DS (2010) features Yacker birthing new legends among the wisps from his time with Sonic. He's inspired to remember because of how deeply touched he is by Sonic's willingness to help.
Sonic never acts explicitly in service of others. Instead, he chooses to follow his heart and let his conscience guide him. He only investigated Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park, in the first place, because of a hunch. But it's with his goofy, empathetic, passionate spark that he finds the truth, earns trust and respect, and fosters good everywhere he goes.
Sonic's soul is driven to be free, do right by others, and have fun doing it, and it's this simple, down-to-earth fight for freedom that makes him such a loveable guy.
Sonic's not a hero because he set out to be one. Sonic's a hero because he inspires others to try.
#this scene makes me almost forgive the fact that the wisps infiltrated sonic uselessly for the following decade!#as mid of a game as it is (ds not included) I actually do have a soft spot for colours#i think sonic is written very interestingly#i might write about that someday#sonic the hedgehog#sonic#sth#sonic colours#sonic colors#sonic colors ds#yacker the wisp#sonic wisps#sonic colours ultimate#character analysis#sonic canon#cute#hero#thank you for everything#sonic colors ultimate#nintendo ds#nintendo wii#sonic wisp

Kinda fun being a Sonic fan right now cause the writers are basically ironing out the canon so they have to mention that time Shadow had a gun and why he no longer has a gun. Which their answer was basically “Shadow is too powerful to need a gun so he won’t use one again.” however Shadow is absolutely the type of character to say “This fight is below my power.” and pull out a gun instead of using their powers.

Really odd question but does anyone know if Eggman has ever used chemical weapons? More specifically outside of the Archie comics?
The Metal Virus is more of a biological weapon so not that.
