Y'all. Someone NEEDS to do a detailed fanfic of this moment. Burnham looks like she is about to cry when Rayner tells her he SEES the stuff she is going through. Cause man. Imagine what she is going through before this? And to have someone LOOK at her like that? I'M about to cry. And the look on HIS face? "I DARE you to shoot me. Matter of fact, here let me make it easy for you.
But I know you won't." Please make a fanfic of this moment. It's intense. It's beautiful.

Fanfic writer ask!
🎬 If a movie or show were based on your fic, which fic would you choose and who would you fancast?
Hey anon!!
This is such a tough ask omg but I will do my best. So, two ideas:
In Fathoms Below - which would never happen because even in a hypothetical future Disney would N E V E R let me steal their IP like that, but pretending that it does
I would cast Ben Barnes or Michiel Huisman as Gale, probably, because I loved Ben as Prince Caspian and I loved Michiel in Age of Adeline lol but after that I have no idea about who I would cast. There are a ton of people in that fic. Also I can't reveal a certain love interest just yet so I don't know if I can fancast her either haha but I've been tossing around ella balinska or a younger sonequa martin-green as inspirations
I mean come on look at them (I grabbed looks as close to Gale as possible for your convenience)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Macabre Masquerade - in which case Gale would still be Ben Barnes or Michiel Huisman, but Dani would probably be Avantika Vandanapu (I would prefer a South Asian actress for Dani given that her in-game features are pretty South Asian to my eyes)
Tumblr media
plus she's just so CUTE
But there are also like a dozen characters in that fic so I'll just stick to casting Gale and Dani haha sorry

Another Milippa Photostory!
[Captain Georgiou has been invited to a formal event at a space station, and as the Shenzhou can stay docked for the night, she has invited Michael, her newly appointed first officer, along with her - short photo story below the cut, or read the full 10k fanfiction on ao3 here]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Philippa: *cracks a dumb joke*
Michael: *has to snort while she has her picture taken*
Tumblr media
Philippa: ...sorry about that
Michael: don't worry, Captain - it's the most fun I had tonight.
Philippa: You're not enjoying yourself? I hope you didn't misunderstand my asking you to accompany me as an order...
Michael: no, don't worry! I usually would, there are actually a number of scientists in attendance I would like to speak to...
Michael: *sighs*
Michael: I just can't stay on the sidelines as much now as I used to when I was just another officer... I don't think I will have a lot of opportunities to talk to the people I actually want to speak to, and I could also do without all the cameras.
Philippa: well, I am sure the novelty will wear off, and you will be able to disappear in the masses again - it also isn't like this every time, often there are higher ranking people taking the spotlight away from you and I... for the time being, I will try to fend off the vultures.
Michael: *laughs* I'll be happy to hide in your shadow, Philippa.
Tumblr media
[later]
*comlink beeps* Captain, there has been an incident, and we need to move the ship...
Michael: *resigned* go, Captain, I will be fine here...
Philippa: Nonsense! I was invited, and I know you aren't enjoying yourself here. You should go to the ship.
Michael: Are you certain? You trust me alone with the Shenzhou?
Philippa: it's why you are my First Officer- and I am sure that I will not regret that choice.
[later]
Tumblr media
Michael: *over the comms* everything alright now, Captain!
Philippa: With the Shenzhou in your hands, I am absolutely certain of it.

Michael Burnham/Ash Tyler
Rating: E (explicit)
Starfleet officers in good standing would rarely tread in seedy backwaters like this. Places where sitting in a corner and revealing a bit of cleavage is an invitation for patrons to try their luck and see if she’s free for the night.
And if the person is pretty, if their teeth aren’t too sharp and their eyes aren’t too soft, she just might be.
Pure, self-indulgent porn - and lots of it.
Work is finished, new chapters will be posted once or twice a week.

Disco 3.07: Unification III
I got Jeri Taylor's "Unification" novelization for Christmas in 1991, because I was an obnoxious little nerd who was already well into "chapter books." I was also the kind of obnoxious little nerd who, by the end of January 1992, had won an argument with my Grade 3 teacher over whether I could list a TV screenwriter as my "favourite author" on an assignment. She'd written a book! It had chapters and everything!
(My grade-school character arc was basically Brad Boimler to Beckett Mariner in 10 years or less.)
Tumblr media
I don't even know what to say about "Unification III." Not all the writing choices worked for me—despite the unquestionable improvements this season, some of Disco's most annoying series-spanning tendencies remain—and when I watched it yesterday morning, I paused about halfway through specifically to reflect on how I wasn't really feeling this one so far.
Not even 10 minutes later, I was crying my eyes out, and I didn't stop until probably 20 minutes after the episode was over. Did the writing get better? Hard to say. Did the back half of the episode redeem the first half? I literally couldn't tell you.
I've spent an enormous amount of time this year thinking about vulnerability and trust, persevering through doubt, and taking terrifying leaps of faith. Like everybody else, I've lost a lot of stability in 2020, but I also met someone who makes my heart feel like it's finally home. She makes me feel like there's still hope, even when I don't know what's worth hoping for.
Mechanically, I think this episode could have used another rewrite. Thematically, it hit me so hard that I kind of don't care. This season of Discovery has things to say—and it's saying them more or less coherently, for a change—and they're things I didn't even realize I needed to hear, right now, from Star Trek. All that and an airtight teleplay might be asking for too much.
Miscellaneous and spoilery observations below:
Starfleet has always been as military as the plot and/or aesthetics demand at the moment—no more, no less, no continuity—and while I have as much fun trying to spackle it together with headcanons as anyone, you can't pretend there's been deliberate intention there. Which is to say: Acting First Officer Ensign Tilly makes as much "sense" as anything else in this dumb franchise, and I've yet to see an argument against her being Saru's 2IC that doesn't boil down to a (willful?) misreading of actual facts in the text of the show, if not just transparent misogyny.
And I don't think she gives herself enough credit. It's not that she'll be "more compliant" than Michael—I believe she'd call Saru on his shit if he were actually fucking up—but she'll push back within Starfleet protocols, and not immediately go rogue with a mirror-universe murder MILF. I even think—and I wish Saru had said—that Tilly would have encouraged him to bring Michael's plan to the Admiral, instead of shooting it down like Saru got in trouble for.
Finally, this ship is already a batshit partybus full of misfit nerds—Tilly might actually be the perfect person to keep them all wrangled on the captain's behalf, at least while Michael finishes her current character arc.
(I can't remember if I've heard Doug Jones confirmed for Season 4 and I'm terrified we're going to end up with Captain Burnham and First Officer Tilly in the saddest possible way.)
Seeing Leonard Nimoy as Spock—and even moreso, hearing that voice—completely undid me. He was my honourary grandfather and I miss him so much.
The name "Ni'Var" sounded shockingly familiar—and sure enough, it's a Vulcan word from TOS fanon that dates back to the 1960s, and probably most famously appeared as the title of a short story in Star Trek: The New Voyages, which was itself essentially a volume of officially-published fanfic. That's got to be one of this show's all-time deepest cuts—my jaw literally dropped.
T'Rina reminded me so much of President Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica that it made me slightly dizzy to see the actor's name—Tara Rosling—in the credits. And not only is she Mary McDonnell–tier gorgeous, she's immediately a Tim Russ–tier Vulcan too. Everything she says, every expression on her face, speaks inscrutable volumes—you can tell something's going on in there, but it's impossible to tell what. (Also uhhhh is a Starfleet captain allowed to smooch the president of a whole planet? Asking for a Kelpian friend...)
The mother-daughter dynamic that Sonja Sohn and Sonequa Martin-Green have created is so excellent and so painful. They both see Gabrielle's absence from Michael's life as an abandonment, and they both want to move past that—to atone and forgive, respectively—but so far they've only really interacted in high-adrenaline, ludicrously high-stakes contexts, and there hasn't been space for that kind of reconciliation. I’m looking forward to next season, when Michael can just holo-Skype her mom to complain about Book leaving his socks on the floor.
Book and Michael's little relationship D-plot was also achingly gorgeous to me, and felt shockingly real for a Star Trek romance. He's Han Solo—he belongs out there saving endangered species in his asymmetrical spaceship with his furry sidekick, roguing handsomely around the galaxy making wisecracks—not squatting on the flight deck of a Federation starship. But he can't just walk away from Michael—she's his home now. And instead of an unrealistically tidy resolution (or contrived conflict), they just sort of admit "yeah, oof, this is complicated," and hold each other.
Finally, special shoutout to Patrick Kwok-Choon and his radiant smile. I need Rhys and Bryce to have stupid Tom Paris/Harry Kim hijinks in Season 4 like you would not BELIEVE.
Next week: there's a rendering glitch in Georgiou's character model, and Ryn the Andorian is back to (hopefully) cheat death again!

Adding to canon is not the same thing as destroying canon
At San Diego Comic Con, we learned that Sonequa Martin-Green’s character, Michael Burnham, is Sarek’s adoptive daughter. The second I heard the news, all I could think was, “Let the hate begin.” And boy, did it ever.
I understand the disappointment, particularly with fan fic writers who invested a lot of time and effort into crafting stories that fit neatly into canon. Amazing how one sound bite can bulldoze right through decades of widely accepted fanon, huh?
Let’s be real, those little behind the scenes moments are almost the entire point of fan fiction: some of us like something so much, we like to imagine all the things the writers didn’t tell us, but now Michael Burnham has come along like a square peg in a round hole, rendering countless stories AU that previously adhered perfectly to canon. Some of mine included.
But fanon isn’t canon. One might say, “How come we’re just hearing about this now?” Surely Spock would have mentioned having an adoptive sister? But would he? Would he though?
No one had any idea he was engaged to T’Pring until the Enterprise showed up to Vulcan on Spock’s impromptu wedding day in the TOS episode, “Amok Time.” What was it he said when Lieutenant Uhura asked who the lovely woman on the viewscreen was?
Tumblr media
If you watch closely enough and get creative with your interpretation, I swear Christine Chapel mouths the word, “bullshit.”
And no one knew that Spock had a strained relationship with his father until that time dear old Sarek hopped on Enterprise for the Coridan admission debate in the TOS episode, “Journey to Babel.” Kirk urged Spock to go down to the planet and visit his family before they left orbit, and what was Spock’s reply?
Tumblr media
I can’t think of a better example of where Spock made Kirk look like a total asshole.
I can maybe understand that he never brought his father up in typical conversation, but one would think once they received a mission to pick up Ambassador Sarek from Vulcan that Spock might have mentioned, "Yeah, it's no big deal or anything, but he's my dad." But of course not. Of course it would be "logical" to wait until the last possible moment just to amp up the cringeworthiness. And then there’s the fact that Kirk had known Spock for decades before finding out he had a half-brother named Sybok in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
Tumblr media
You would think Kirk would be used to Spock family bombshells by now.
So if anything, the idea that Spock had a secret adoptive sister actually feels more in keeping with canon than going against it. Given the weight of the evidence, I wouldn’t be all that shocked to discover he had three step mothers, a couple of wives, a brother-in-law who worked in engineering, and a whole herd of secret love children drifting around out there. I mean, it happened often enough that even Saturday Night Live parodied it.
Tumblr media
Spock-O could have been real and you know it. So yeah, there are worse things that could happen to the fandom than Michael Burnham.
The other thing is, as viewers, we tend to get into the habit of thinking that if a character doesn’t specifically address something on screen in front of other characters, other characters are in the dark along with the viewers. Like if a character didn’t explicitly announce some detail about their personal life to the world, not only did it never happen, it never could have happened. And that’s just silly. Think about this: Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew spent five years together on that mission, and we only got to view a little less than 66 hours of it. So imagine all the conversations in the mess hall we as viewers missed out on. Did anyone flip out when it was revealed that Dr. McCoy had a daughter in The Animated Series? You would think he would have mentioned her in The Original Series, no? Maybe he did, but the viewers just weren't invited to that conversation.
Going back and adding to canon is not the same thing as destroying canon. Star Trek, particularly The Original Series, was always more focused on exploring the galaxy and meeting new civilizations – its primary purpose wasn’t to flesh out complicated life stories for each of the main characters. When you think about it, there’s so much we don’t know about Spock’s upbringing or Sarek and Amanda's origins. Almost everything we do know about this family comes from two episodes – “Journey to Babel” in The Original Series and “Yesteryear” in The Animated Series.
I think because we spent more than five decades without any concrete ideas of how Sarek and Amanda met, what Spock’s formative years were really like, or how their family dynamics worked, we just filled in the blanks for ourselves. But fifty years is a long time for the lines between canon and fanon to start getting blurred.
So I’m actually tickled pink at the thought that Spock had an adoptive sister, not furious that they’re "corrupting" more than fifty years of canon. It would be tampering with canon to claim that Spock never existed, that Chekov was a flower child, or that Starship Troopers is actually some kind of prequel to Kirk and the starship Enterprise, but writing in a sister for Spock where one previously didn’t exist isn’t quite the same thing.
Tumblr media
Would you like to know more?
The writers of the show are just doing what we as fan fic writers do all the time – filling in the gaps. You’re definitely allowed to feel however you want to feel about it. And I do understand a lot of the dismay and shock. It really sucks to pour your heart and soul into something, polishing it for months or even years until it’s perfect, and then have Michael Burnham thrown into the mix and it almost feels like a bad Photoshop job over your favorite family portrait, ruining your origins fics for Sarek/Amanda or Spuhura or Spirk or Spones or Spotty? (Is that actually what the Spock/Scotty ship is called?). It’s perfectly acceptable to say that Michael Burnham’s existence has ruined your perception of canon, but I don’t think it should be confused with ruining actual canon.
And worst case scenario… fanfic writers will just do what they’ve always done: include disclaimers explaining how they hate certain aspects of canon so they just plan to completely ignore it. That’s their prerogative, but I often find it disappointing. I see it with Sybok in Sarek/Amanda fics all the time. Many people prefer to just write him out, and while it is tempting to pretend like The Final Frontier never happened, I’ve always included him. I think it does reality a huge disservice to cut him out, and I think it will be just as bad to do the same thing to Michael.
People get hung up on the idea that Spock was so lonely and misunderstood, but what about the loneliness that Sybok must have felt, having his mother die and going to live with a human step-mother, a half brother, and a father he barely knew, if he ever even knew him at all before his mother’s passing? I loved Sybok’s addition because he helps represent the complex reality of blended families. Between Sarek, Amanda, Spock, and Sybok, I think that family was rife with loneliness and misunderstanding long before Michael Burnham was written in.
I think Michael, if I understand her story correctly that she’s an orphan who was taken in by Sarek and Amanda, only serves to add to the rich tapestry of Spock’s unique family, and it certainly seems as if she'll fit right in with the other misfits in Sarek's brood. A human wife, a moody Vulcan son from a previous relationship, a half-human son from his current marriage, and now an adoptive human daughter. I feel like that’s a true picture of a modern family in all its messy and complicated and beautiful glory.
People like to romanticize the idea of a “traditional” family, but I like the “messier” version so much more. I think it actually fits in better with Spock’s character. I’m sure there are some who will ask, “But then how can you explain why he would say he felt so lonely growing up if he had not one but two siblings?” I also imagine many of those people were raised as an only child.
We don’t really know how much of an age gap exists between Spock and Sybok (or between Spock and Michael Burnham), but just imagine for a second that you’re Spock, and you have an older brother who’s constantly disappointing your father with his talk about emotions and a human adoptive sister who’s constantly struggling to fit in on Vulcan too. It might be easy to feel like an afterthought at times, especially because Sybok is fully Vulcan like Sarek and Michael is fully human like Amanda and you almost feel like something “other.”
Not that Spock feels of course. No, he would “never” do that. But I look forward to seeing how this all plays out and I sincerely hope people give her a chance (canonwise and fanonwise) before dismissing her altogether because she “ruins” Spock’s “traditional” nuclear family.
During the Comic Con panel, producer Alex Kurtzman insisted they have a good canon explanation for why Spock never mentions Michael. He was quoted as saying, “We’re aware [of the situation]. You’ll see where it’s going, but we are staying consistent with canon.” So I’m inclined to keep an open mind and see where they take it before dismissing it outright for being “too ludicrous.” Spock always held his cards close to his chest where his family was concerned, and weirder things have happened within the Trek universe. Give Michael Burnham a chance.

10, 13, and 42?
Thanks, Liz!
10. What song sums up this year for you?
“Go to the Zoo” from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (haha, bet you thought it would be a Sufjan song)
13. Did an actor/actress catch your attention for the first time this year?
Maybe Kelly Marie Tran? Rose was the best part of tlj, imho. Oh, and Sonequa Martin-Green.
42. What are you most proud of accomplishing?
It wasn’t a great year for accomplishing stuff, tbh. But I’m glad I managed to write and share a little bit of fanfic, even if that was way back in March ;ajfljsdlfas.
send me questions to help sum up the year

Star Trek Discovery, oh god why
Okay, I tried, but I can't not talk about this. And it's past midnight so my impulse control is gone. And this has SPOILERS so that is your last warning.
I mean it.
Okay.
God this sucked on so many levels. I see people posting oh this is so good, or I love it, or this is so Trek. And I really have to wonder. But I'm just going to lay out my thoughts, and get this off my mind.
Now, I'm a tech head, so I'm starting with that, the sets and effects and costumes. None of this fits in any previous certain of Trek. Take the costumes. The look like an evolution of the ones from Enterprise, which is all work and good, except that Enterprise takes place a hundred years ago from this episode. Also this takes place at the same time as the first pilot, The Cage, when Captain Pike commander the Enterprise. So the uniforms should look like that if it's in the prime universe. And nothing else makes sense. If it's prime universe, why are there all these big blue display screens? Where it's the little science visor thing, the primary color buttons. The only thing on the bridge that sounds like prime universe is the beeps. Maybe it's jj verse? But the tech didn't fit in there either. And long distance holograms? I'm sorry, every Trek show had used the viewscreen, so can you. Same with the transporter, looks nothing like any other transporter. And the ship, okay I can see the ship, if it was from the late 24th century. If it's from ten years before the first Star Trek, it should either look like the old Enterprise, or the Kelvin. And the lens flare, god you thought JJ was bad?
Okay, I could talk all day, but let's move on to the characters. First, the good, Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh. Now here is a Starfleet captain. Starfleet doesn't fire first, she says, but she'll end it. Smart, tough, and explorer and a protector. Willing to look past personal issues to get the job done. This is a captain who ranks right along with Kirk, Picard, Sisko, if not better than them. Even with every other problem I said about this show, I would watch it for her.
To bad she died in the second episode.
Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, the "main" character. Oh where do I start. Served with her captain for seven years. Manages to frack up a recon mission, mutiny, frack up that, and frack up the one plan that might have saved the Federation. Is now in jail. Is also apparently the token surviving character of color, so far. The rest of her reads like bad fanfic. Was raised by Sarek after her parents were killed by Klingons. Yes that Sarek, which again brings up the question, if this is ten years before Star Trek, is she Spock's sister? Also apparently mind melded hard enough with Sarek that part of his brain is still with her. Right.
Speaking of Klingons, okay taking aside the costumes that don't make any sense, and the ships that resemble Klingon designs like a hawk resembles a pigeon, well, so people are saying that they're the "make Klingons great again" party, but looking at it, well, actually it could also be a reflection of the African American position, stay black. It looks more like that when all the Klingons are very dark skinned, except the one outside one, who is white.
Yeah, moving on.
So story. Sorry, it's too edgy. Why is everyone fighting with each other? This is Star Trek, it's supposed to show the best that people can be, even if it doesn't always get there. Call me old fashioned, but is that really out of style? Your main character doesn't have to be at odds with everyone else. The basic story is okay, but it's just to much.
Anyway, ran out of steam on this. I just don't know. At this rate, I haven't seen it yet, but I'll give The Orville a chance before I come back to this.
