Mini-review:

Wow, I didn't think I would enjoy The Frog so much. I guess I was in the mood for a dark, propulsive thriller. I've seen some people say it's 'slow', but like... where? This kept me glued to the screen from the very first episode, and it got more and more intense throughout the next ones. It even ventures into psychological horror territory from time to time, which made it even more fun to me. The writing isn't perfect (some of the characters aren't as well developed as they should), but the directing and the acting more than make up for it. Go Min Si turns in a particularly strong performance, and it's clear she gave it her all. I'm not gonna say this is the best thriller k-drama I've seen, but it was definitely enjoyable as hell.

Love Next Door and the parallels between families:

Seung-Hyo and Seok-Ryu may be the leads but there is a beautiful story amongst the "adults" in the series that truly wraps it up tight. The parents of all three kids show us just how much society and social norms can make or break a family and it's functions. This post, I will talk about envy/jealousy and pride in the story. This will be episodes 1-3 because if I did all the eps to 11 in one post yall would hate me, lol. Here we go...

Pride: Outside the obvious which is the jealousy between our leads we also see it in amongst the other characters. We see it first in episode one when the moms are arguing about our leads and their accomplishments. This is a good scene that starts the show on a foreshadow because as the story progresses, we see a lot of things about dreams & whether the kids accomplished any.

But this isn't really about their kids as both women adore the others child. This is (for lack of a better phrase) "whose is bigger" argument. Then through the other group members we see that this is a normal occurrence between the two besties. One always trying to one up the other. I'd like to add it isn't just SH and SR's mom's its also Mo-Eum's mom who, even though her daughter is successful, is still living at home, unmarried. Which, in many cultures, is an issue (mine included).

We also find out something important in the rivalry between Hye-Suk and Mi-Suk, they were, at one point, on the same level but Hye-Suk could afford college while Mi-Suk could not.

Which is why we again see pride taking precedence over family at SH's opening when Mi-Suk blatantly lies about SR's job in front of her old frenemies.

Completely ignoring the fact that her daughter is obviously having a hard time. But still needing to prove that she has a one up on her friends.

The next scene is super important because we see SR's breaking point that she's been leading to since being home. Regardless of what we now know is her real reason for returning home, she's exhausted. She just want's to be Bae Seok-Ryu and not Bae Seok-Ryu, the pride and joy of the Bae family.

And even though she seems to come around, it's only because she believes what they (minus her two bffs) believe, that she has to at some point go back to over doing it.

Envy/Jealousy: We also see a lot of foreshadowing through this, one of the most interesting things you see in ep. 1 is Hye-Suk's obvious jealousy of her son and best friends relationship.

Something that Mi-Suk may not know but sees that the relationship between mother and son are not the same. That's why I find the scene where Mi-Suk asks if he's dating interesting because, she would probably know better than his mom. But this proves she doesn't see just how fractured the relationship is. Mi-Suk is maternal in every way and pretty much raised Seung-Ho. So she has a more soft and nurturing relationship with him than we see with his mom. Where that one proves to be awkward and stoic. Meanwhile, he is very airy and light when talking to Mi-Suk or her husband. He's at ease even when they are cross with him.

We see this again in episode 2 when he goes to Mi-Suk's house and has breakfast and even complains that he hasn't eaten. But in Episode 3 he tells his mother he doesn't normally eat breakfast and the entire meal with the family is quiet and awkward. I would like to add here though, that he may be telling the truth about not eating since we have seen that he doesn't prioritize it over work but, the point stands. Even though he may not eat a lot of breakfast, he easily went to Mi-Suk's house and actually asked for it. But, in his defense, that was his life growing up so...can you blame him?

The problem though is that this leads Hye-Suk to believe that both men would be happier with her gone than at home (something we as the audience know is not true but more on that later). Another subtle gesture we see with him is at his opening. His mother comes in and politely shakes his hand while Mi-Suk jokes about him being a picky eater and even pats his back/butt?? I am not 100% sure but she pats him like a mother would do their child.

But I also want to point out another obvious seen where SH's Co-CEO thinks that Mi-Suk is his mother. But not just that, but the way SH seems to laugh it off while his mother & Mi-Suk seem uncomfortable. It's not a big deal to him because in his eyes they are both motherly figures in different ways. Hye-Suk is his mother who he loves but can't quite get too close to. While Mi-Suk is the mother that helped raise him, got him to eat, and mother's him to death.

I am going to stop here because this post is already super long! I'll do the next few eps after I watch todays episode because I have been dying to get some closure to SH and his family dynamic because they all love each other and have the ability to turn their relationships around if they just TALKED. KK brb. Enjoy this one for now.

Pada Senin (12/8/2024), CJ ENM mengumumkan, "'Can't Help It' telah menyelesaikan casting Lee Byung Hun, Son Ye Jin, Park Hee Soon, Lee Sung Min, Yeom Hye Ran, Cha Seung Won, dan Yoo Yeon Seok."

Dalam film ini, Byung Hun akan mengambil peran sebagai Man Soo, yang menerima pemberitahuan pemecatan setelah bekerja di perusahaan yang sama selama 25 tahun. Karakter ini adalah seorang pria yang tergiring ke tepi jurang, dilingkupi keputusasaan dan kegilaan saat ia mencari pekerjaan baru.

Kemudian, Ye Jin akan berperan sebagai Mi Ri, istri Man Soo. Mi Ri adalah karakter yang ceria dan serba bisa yang melangkah maju untuk keluarganya meskipun suaminya menganggur.

Berikutnya, Hee Soon akan berperan sebagai Choi Seon Chul, seorang mandor di perusahaan kertas. Sung Min akan memerankan Koo Beom Mo, seorang veteran di industri kertas yang menjadi pencari kerja, sementara Yeom Hye Ran akan memerankan istri Beom Mo.

Love Next Door - 8/10

I would say that the weakest link of the show is the central romance. And to be clear, the central romance isn't bad! It's totally fine. Cute friends to lovers. But the problem is that the OTHER stories and relationships had me WAY more invested so I often found myself wishing we were spending time with the parents (especially the moms!) or the secondary leads (honestly an all time great romance IMO). And that kinda creates a less than awesome viewing experience, you know? Like the main romance is sweet and good and all but I just loooooved the other characters so much that I started to resent the leads because I wished their screentime was being given to other characters.

The show kicks off with Seok-ryu returning to Korea after spending over a decade living and working abroad. She's quit her job and called off her wedding and shows up on her parents' doorstep without warning or explanation. As she reconnects with her old neighborhood and childhood friends (especially her nextdoor neighbor and son of her mom's friend Seung-hyo), Seok-ryu figures out what she actually wants from life. And like a character in her 30s realizing she's lost in life and doesn't know what she wants is VERY relatable and the relationship between Seok-ryu and Seung-hyo is sweet as they go from childhood friends to romantic partners. But it still pales for me when compared to the other stories.

Seok-ryu and Seung-hyo's parents navigating their married relationships (after being married for decades) and what their lives will look like as they reach retirement age is something you don't see portrayed often. And it was really well done, imo! The mom characters have been best friends since high school and I love how complex they are as characters. They're very different as people and have lived very different lives. They butt heads often but will absolutely have each other's back when push comes to shove.

But the REAL REAL highlight for me is the romance between Mo-eum (another childhood friend of Seok-ryu) and Dan-ho (a reporter who has recently moved into the neighborhood). Mo-eum is a paramedic who has grown up idolizing superheroes. Dan-ho is a single dad who is figuring out how to balance work with taking care of his kindergarten age daughter. Like idk how to explain it but they are SO CUTE together. The actors had great chemistry and it was just so fun watching the more reserved Dan-ho come to life as he spent more time around Mo-eum. SO CUTE.

there wasn't anything in particular that he imagined, or even hoped for, as ji-eun wasn't after his father's affection or even public recognition. he just wanted to benefit from their name��to live as them without the cameras or the media following every detail of their life. if anything, it was convenient for everyone that he stayed in the shadows, considering what he did for a living.

"i'm sure i can persuade him." came ji-eun's response in his characteristic nonchalant attitude. just as he did with seung-jae, he would do with his father if he decided to make things difficult for the two of them. "i'm sure he'd like to keep his first son safe." the likely heir of everything he owned. his entire legacy would fall onto seung-jae's shoulders, so wouldn't it be smart to look after them, then? "problem will be, how much to tell him about your relation with mo." a relationship that remained mostly unknown to him, but one he could suspect that was filled with a side of seung-jae that was better kept away from the public. why else would she target him as well? sooner or later, ji-eun would find out what happened between them—whether this was through mo's mouth or sheer speculation. the other could forget all about having a private life for as long as ji-eun was present.

by the time he was done dressing, it would be him the one to look for his brother by knocking on the bathroom door. his body leaned to the side, resting his weight against the door frame. "feeling okay, big brother?"

"I'm not really interested in your profession, and clearly you not either." Considering he sought more in his life, proper enrichment, that could be only done with an unholy amount of money. "..." Of course, Ji-eun's skill may help him to feel a bit safer, considering Mo's plans, but what could a single man do, if that bitch managed to get a mafia boss on her side, when he had understood that part right. He felt so sick, he almost wanted to throw up. His peaceful life suddenly took an even bigger turn and there seemed to be no way out, unless he got rid of that woman.

"Clearly caring after all," Seung-Jae huffed. "I really don't know how you imagine it ... but I've to await father's decision anyway..." Revealing his obedience towards him, though inwardly he was already imagining how things were supposed to go from now on. Maybe he could give Ji-eun a car or two, some fancy house somewhere, and the idiot would be happy and wasting his money on whatever hobbies he had.

He would glare at him, when he got out, of course that idiot would try to listen. Of course, he had to fulfill the cliche of the little annoying brother. He was so useless. The information about this mafia boss was not leaving his mind. He was already as good as dead the more he thought about it. That he was still alive only promised a worse ending. Their whole group was fucked, but he liked to think, that Mo's hate was mostly directed towards Sara. The bit teasing he did, was she really ... ? In the end... Ji-eun might as well steal his place completely, in the worst case. Ji-eun's comment fell on deaf ears, as Seung-Jae had left the room for the bathroom, leaning over the toilet as he emptied his stomach. The last bit was spit out, before flushing the toilet, but not moving an inch. "..." He did not know what to do. That woman was after blood and not money.

they say that people act weird when they are near their death. maybe their actions depict them saying goodbye and wait for you in the afterlife. you didn’t know much about death but certain relatives and other peers made you experience pain and sorrow. the cascading tears and never-ending memories of the one who died keep haunting you to sleep. but there’s nothing more painful when it comes to those people who are close to your heart, who had to say their goodbyes, unexpectedly. and fate can’t even protect you from heartbreak.

it was exactly two weeks when it happened and you just arrived in the apartment after a tiring work day. nothing changed, except the fact that you are now alone. you didn’t bother to turn on the lights and depending on the lamp, sat at the top of a small table in the living room. it feels empty, cold, quiet, dark, and bitter. nothing beats this feeling when he is not around and the memories he left made it sad. nostalgia didn’t hit you yet for the cries and lonely nights still lie heavy on your shoulders. 

your hand reached the clear jewel case seungmin gave you a month ago. a cd with only two songs he recorded during his birthday. it had his signature and doodles on it, even his cute handwriting that never fails to make you smile. work and hectic schedules didn’t even let you sit and listen to them but maybe a sad friday night will allow you to. you regretted it, you regret not listening to them sooner. you would have expressed how much you love them when he was still alive. 

“i’ll always be there, i’m gonna stay, closer to you,” 

“i’m still here, always, each and every stop, i miss being by your side,” 

you couldn’t even hear the speaker properly, the sound of cries escalates the room. hands covering your face, the whole two weeks without him feels like hell. the car crash was too rough to make him survive and seeing him covered with blood made you feel lifeless. shattered glass and sounds of cries, the crushed bumper, broken windows, sounds of sirens and chatters of people, you only saw seungmin that night. 

the investigator’s words just flew by. nothing really went inside your head. it was just seungmin on a stretcher, eyes closed as he fell into a deep slumber before the white cloth covered his face. and just like that, the horrifying incident has led to a heartbreaking loss of a son and a friend. but for you, 

“you know what’s beautiful?” he said. 

“what?” you asked, looking back at him. 

“you,” he smiled. “even when i close my eyes, you still bloom beautifully, just like the flowers that bloom in spring. and by that, i will always remember you, even if we part,” 

the love of your life is gone.

My favorite ships from kdramas - appreciation post (part 1)

1. Suspicious Partner - Eun Bong-hee & Noh Ji-wook

The sexy sarcastic prosecutor and funny cute lawyer fighting crimes together. Sounds like perfect drama and it really is, especially for me as a law student.  The chemistry between main characters is something out of this world. They're making you laugh, they're making you cry, they're making you scream and they're making you feel fucking lonely but who cares. Who needs boyfriend when you have kdramas, right? No one will ever be as perfect as Ji Chang-wook anyway.

2. My strange hero - Son Soo-jung & Kang Bok-soo

What I love about this couple is how amazing they had grew up. When they were teens they’ve been lost and scared but as an adults they learnt how to talk to each other and support each other. Their break up (it's kdrama so break up is a must have) was reasonable and right. We stan mature and healthy relationships in this household.

Also they're cute af.

3. Fight for my way - Choi Ae-ra & Ko Dong-man

I love love love them! Is there anything better than funny and adorable couple of friends finding out they're in love? I don't think so. And I adore how they shown intimacy of a couple, which is great bc most of dramas end up at just few kisses (or not even that - i'm looking at u School 2017!).

And huge applause for famous aegyo scenes. I can’t describe how much they make my days better. 

4. My first first love - Han Song-yi & Tae-oh

Another friends-to-lovers drama. 

I was little bit sad for Seo Do-hyun because all in all he was great guy and good character. But well, sorry boy, you can’t win with soulmates. Han Song-yi and Tae-oh were destined to be together and to made me install tinder. I just want love like theirs.

5. Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok-joo - Kim Bok-joo &  Jung Joon-hyung

I love this drama and I love them. Jung Joon-hyung is a perfect main lead and my dream boyfriend, I swear. He has so many patience and respect for Kim Bok-joo and what’s even more important: HE’S SO NICE. I’m done with cocky and arrogant dicks as a main characters. It’s time for new non-fuckboys era and I’m here for it. 

6. Strong Woman Do Bong Son - Do Bong-son & Ahn Min-hyuk 

I love how kdramas shows us strong and independant women, who are still feminin and cute. And Ahn Min-hyuk is another one of this nice, supporting, cute guys so of course i have to love him. The only thing that botter me in this drama and relationship is In Gook-doo. He deserved so much better. But well, I volunteer to comfort him and then everyone will be happy! Most of all me. 

Also Ahn Min-huyk is so extra I can’t! 

7. The K2 - Kim Je-ha & Choi Yoo-jin

Okay, so I know this one might be a little bit controversial. It's the only non-endgame couple on the list and I know K2 end up with Anna. BUT! C'mon the chemistry between Je-ha and Yoo-jin killed me every time they had a scene together. The fire was there! And i think the show would be so much better if the writers decide to explore their relationship instead of Je-ha and Anna. It will forever remain a big great "what if" of my life.

8. Healer -  Chae Young-shin & Seo Jung-hoo

Yup, another Ji Chang-wook kdrama on the list, but c’mon. Can you blame me? He’s so pretty I wanna cry. And Healer was the drama that made most of us fall in love with him. It’s classic. I wasn’t satisfied with the ending but Chae Young-shin and Seo Jung-hoo are so adorable that they kinda makes up for it.  

9. Descendants of the sun - Kang Mo-yeon & Yoo Shi-jin

Let me just tell u that Shi-jin is my favorite male lead in kdramas ever. I just love him so much. He's cute and sassy and caring and i can literally go on for a whole day. I LOVE HIM. And dr Kang is such a great female lead: she's strong and fierce but feminin and goofy. They're perfect for each other, so funny and cute. I guess if i had to choose just one favorite ship that one would probably be it.

10. Goblin - Ji Eun-tak & Kim-shin

They broke my heart. I still can’t talk about them bc it hurts too much. They’re amazing, that’s all, trust me. They’re...no, no. Sorry, I can’t. I have to go grab a tissue. I’ll be right back.

11. I'm not a robot - Jo Ji-ah & Kim Min-kyu

That was a wild ride! I think it’s the fluffiest kdrama I’ve ever watched. They went from enemies to robot and robot owner and than to robot and robot lover and than to humans and than to lovers. Great show, I swear. 

Plus Yoo Seung-Ho is the most adorable human being ever. 

12. School 2017 -  Ra Eun-ho &  Hyun Tae-woon

Ugh, young love. Innocent and cute. So innocent we didn’t get a kiss and I’m still salty about it. But idc, all in all they’re great and Re Eun-Ho’s aegyo is one of the best thing that ever happened to me.

Start-Up

Start-Up features four, very driven, characters interested in start-ups and technology. Seo Dal-mi (Bae Suzy) and Won In-jae (Kang Han-na) are sisters who were separated after their parents’ divorce and develop a rivalry. Nam Do-san (Nam Joo-hyuk) was a math prodigy as a child, but hasn’t had much luck with his company Samsan Tech yet. Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Seon-ho) was a disadvantaged orphan, but transformed his life with the help of Dal-mi’s grandmother. The foursome learn and grow as they pursue their tech dreams.

Record of Youth

Record of Youth also centers on young people chasing after their dreams, but in the entertainment industry. Sa Hye-jun (Park Bo-gum) and Won Hae-hyo (Byeon Woo-seok) are both model-turned actors hoping to make it big. An Jeong-ha (Park So-dam) quits a secure office job at a conglomerate in order to take on her dream job of being a makeup artist. As they go after their dreams, there are people who block their paths. However, they strive to overcome setbacks as they further their careers.

Itaewon Class

Itaewon Class showcases the battle between Park Saeroyi (Park Seo-jun) and food conglomerate Jangga Group. Saeroyi gets expelled from school, loses his father, and becomes a convict because of Jangga Group’s CEO and his son. These unfair events are enough to anger anyone, but Saeroyi overcomes his anger and channels it into creating a bar-restaurant. The callous and intelligent Jo Yi-seo (Kim Da-mi) decides to help grow Saeroyi’s business. Along with the other DanBam crew, the pair fight back against Jangga Group.

Doctors

Doctors proves that anyone can turn their life around with determination and hard work. Yoo Hye-jeong (Park Shin-hye) had a tough childhood, and is a headstrong delinquent in high school. Due to her unruly behavior and her financial situation, Hye-jeong’s future does not look particularly promising. However, she is changed after meeting compassionate teacher Hong Ji-hong (Kim Rae-won) who inspires her to change her path and become a doctor. 13 years later, they reunite after Hye-jeong has become a neurosurgeon.

Fight for My Way

Fight for My Way shows four friends whose lives don’t go as they had initially planned. In particular, Ko Dong-man (Park Seo-jun), Choi Ae-ra (Kim Ji-won), and Baek Sul-hee (Song Ha-yoon) are not satisfied with their current job situations. Ae-ra hasn’t given up on her dream though, and pursues a new opportunity. This inspires Dong-man to find a career that makes him happy as well. Facing difficult people and circumstances, the four friends grow as they pursue their dreams and change their lives. You might be stuck in a situation, but you can still go after your goals.

The Producers

The Producers takes a look at four people behind the scenes of the broadcasting world. Baek Seung-chan (Kim Soo-hyun) becomes a rookie producer in order to work closely with his crush. However, he ends up joining Ra Joon-mo (Cha Tae-hyun)’s show instead. Joon-mo struggles to revive ratings for his show and seeks help from his friend and fellow producer Tak Ye-jin (Kong Hyo-jin). Lastly, Cindy (IU) is a famous singer who debuted at a young age. This drama shows how things won’t always be smooth sailing even when you get the job you aimed for. However, the characters work hard and with passion in order to protect their dreams.

Welcome to Waikiki

Welcome to Waikiki gathers three young men and women who run a guesthouse together while pursuing their dreams. At first, the guesthouse is managed by the three guys who individually aspire to be a successful director, actor, and screenwriter. The three girls who join them also have different career goals: pastry chef, journalist, and model. Many humorous, embarrassing situations befall the six characters as they are sometimes forced to do things they don’t want to do while they pursue better opportunities.

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung centers around free-spirited Goo Hae-ryung who focuses on studying instead of romance unlike most of her peers. She works hard to become a historian while fighting gender stereotypes. Despite being looked down upon due to being a woman, Hae-ryung doesn’t hesitate to voice her opinions and defend people who have been wronged. She’s an admirable character who stands up for what she believes in even if it means going up against the king. Be motivated by her bravery to pursue your dreams as well!

Oh My Ghost

Oh My Ghost’s heroine, Na Bong-sun (Park Bo-young), is a timid assistant chef with low self-esteem. She’s not confident enough in her cooking skills and has a secret crush on her boss Kang Sun-woo (Cho Jung-seok). After getting possessed by the ghost of a lustful virgin Shin Soon-ae (Kim Seul-gi), she changes completely and catches the attention of Sun-woo. With Soon-ae’s help, Bong-sun gains the confidence to show her culinary skills and go after the man she’s interested in. Sometimes it’s hard to believe in yourself and external help can make all the difference. An encouraging friend can help you realize the potential you had inside of you all along.
