#sometimes logging into tumblr can be so beautiful

probably a dumb question, but I'm working on a charlie and etoiles fic and i was wondering if i could get some advice on writing them? (or just writing in general)

the current plot of the fic is essentially that etoiles was a tiny (abt 7 centimeters) person but used technology to make himself human sized, until the tech fails and he shrinks again, while charlie is also tiny and he finds and helps etoiles. it has a modern world/political backdrop in a world where tinies and humans live together

I’m gonna try to give some advice but take everything I say with a grain of salt. I’m just a lil dude with no formal training or “practice”. Idk how I do what I do tbh

All advice under the cut so I don’t take up anyones dashboards!!

For characters, esp mcyt, I’ve found that comilation vids on YouTube are a really great resource!! Heres one I like for Étoiles: X

Don’t always trust my depiction of characters since I myself am not immune to the oocification of them at times. Plus, my guys get shaped by the narratives I’ve forced them into for several chapters so they are not exactly like their cc or q counterparts. But the beauty of fanfiction is that I can play dolls however I please!

One thing I didn’t do in the beginning that I try to watch now is vocabulary for certain characters. For Étoiles, English is his second or even third language. There are certain words native English speakers use that he probably wouldn’t, same for phrases or sentence structure. Earlier, I wrote him a little too… neat and clean with his words. Even his internal monologue was off bc of that. Here’s an example I remember from fingers-

Og: “Please, treat yourself with the same kindness that you afford others.”

Edited: “Please, treat yourself with the same kindness you give others.”

Even now that sounds stilted, I would probably change it to: “Slime, give yourself some… understanding. Be nice to you just like you are nice to everyone else.”

He wouldn’t casually use the word “afford” like I might, and his English might be a little more jilted or awkward. Though don’t always make that assumption- Étoiles is fluent, just consider how learning a new language affects how you use it compared to a native speaker. I still slip up and definitely say things he wouldn’t but I’m learning as I go too!

I wish I had better resources for Charlie but I’ve been watching him for so long now that his character is easier for me, thought I’m not perfect.

When writing starcicle- the biggest thing to note this that they both love their bits. Someone said they get into a recursive feedback loop until one of them dies or logs off and it’s true. They goof off and Charlie flirts with Étoiles, which is sometimes reciprocated jokingly. I wish I had a video of all their interactions, they’re just so good. But yeah they feed off each others silly while having genuinely nice moments like when Étoiles complimented Charlie’s ability to make people smile and the election dinner. I use their separate personalities and the few interactions they’ve had to build on and expand their relationship in fanfics. Kind of like an informed understanding??? Idk it’s fanfiction. You can write them however you please tbh. I wanted my progression in immi to seem a little more natural but it’s still not exactly them and that’s okay! I’m just here to have fun and so should you!!

As for writing in general- dig through related tags on tumblr!! There are some great resources on tumblr and buried in peoples blogs. Look to see if people are tagging posts for personal sorting and then stalk their blog to see what else they find useful haha. I do it all the time… I wish I had a masterpost for this but sadly not yet. I’m trying to build my own tag for references but it’s slow going. Just yesterday I saw a great text ref for writing fight scenes on tiktok so you’ll keep finding new resources all the time. Start your own collection of posts and resources since there is no gigantic one available.

I will say a few things: outlines, no matter how do you them, are great. Jumping off of that- when creating a world like you are, write down all your rules and world building first so as you write, you can reference it and make sure you are staying within the guidelines of the world you created. I do this for hybrids like Charlie so I don’t say one thing and change it a few chapters later.

-Never fully delete anything you write unless it’s minor edits. Remove it from the doc sure, but save it somewhere else. You never know where it might work better.

-Read. Read others work, read books, read articles, read anything creative. I think the only way I can write the way I do is bc I’ve spent the last 10 or so years obsessively reading lmao. I was not a good writing when I tried back in 2011, and I’m still learning now, but just reading so much other material really helped I think. Don’t stay in your own bubble.

-Write for yourself first. You can write to share with others but always write for you too. It’s easy to get caught up in needing “approval” or validation, I do too, but love what you make as well.

-read your work aloud to yourself. This is great for proofreading and also awkward sentence structure/placement.

-when you want something to happen, don’t just flippantly make it happen. That’s how you get ooc moments and actions. Want something to happen and then look at your characters, understand where they need to be in order for that thing to occur. Not just in a physical sense but also a character sense. You can bypass this by letting the audience know if there’s an established dynamic already so you don’t have to build one, but you still need text to support and uplift it.

I have a lot of thoughts and ideas on writing but also I’m not always right. Like I said, look at other creative work, look at other resources. Practice!!! I’m practicing too still

Okay, let me start by saying Glass Scientists broke me and also reminded me of something I did seven years ago. In an effort to make myself more respectable for a job, I deleted my Tumblr in June of 2017. In it, I had logged my entire journey of being on meds, coming out as trans, and a whole host of stuff. Don't ask my why I thought anyone would ever find it. But, it remains that I was so scared of anyone knowing all of these "dark things" that I completely destroyed my blog. I'd had about three to five years worth of poetry on that blog that I sent into computer code. I've been weeping over this comic for days after I binged it. How many works do you have on ao3? Aw man, you made me log into my AO3 account? I haven't been around there recently because I feel bad about leaving some messages unanswered. Tumbletown is my main fic home and I haven't really had the time to post here, much less on AO3. (Answer the question Adira.) It says I have 19. I don't post there until they're here and sometimes don't crosspost. Mainly I've been posting over there only if I have a complete series, although sorry LMR readers both there AND here.

2. What's your total ao3 word count? 260,317. Seeing as how not even half of my fic is up over there, I cringe to think of what my actual wordcount is.

3. What fandoms do you write for? Pedro Pascal. Which is an umbrella for the actual fandoms contained therein.

5. Do you respond to comments? I do. Every one. I know I'm behind on some and I'm sorry about that. I let that bother me enough that it's getting in the way of my writing and I shouldn't do that.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I don't like to leave angst hanging and only use it as a trampoline for a happy ending, but I guess the closest thing I have would be A Kiss Before Dying and in Death We Combine. Even if it ends in "death," at least they get to be together.

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? All of them? LOL. Of the multi-chapters I've actually finished, probably A Girl Walks Into a Bookshop.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Only in passing. There were the mean girls that were kind of being catty over on a few other blogs about GTTT when it blew up much to my surprise (yes, of course I saw all of that, mean girls gonna mean). I remember some comment about not trivializing massage therapists just because I have a shitty back.... and all I could think was, hey. First of all, I can tell you didn't even read it, you're just mad about it blowing up. Not my fault. Next. Don't talk about my back. You wouldn't like being injured and having people talk smack about a piece of your body that gives you pain beyond comprehension, y'bigot. Also not my fault. Once I realized they were just mean girls meaning, I let it roll off and got my own satisfaction by writing a pretty bomb series based on some of their prompt lists that I never would have seen if I hadn't been clued into the smack. Turn that hate into something great!

9. Do you write smut? I do. Not exclusively and it's never the main dish of the story. If it does show up, it's usually the result of a long period of longing and/or feelings exchange.

10. Craziest crossover? I'm not a crossover gal. Every once in a while I'll write an easter egg into another fic (there are several in GTTT), but nothing heavy duty. There was the time The Mandalorian got something of a cameo in a Sweet's fic tho....

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Oh gods, I hope not. That would suck. I hate blocking people.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? YES! But not in the way you might think! @katareyoudrilling did an amazing job translating the first chapter of Good. Things. Take. Time. into a sexytime roleplay script!!!! I'M STILL SQUEEING ABOUT IT.

13. Have you co-written a fic before? In a way. For a while when RP accounts were in full swing, I was falling very much in love with the adventure I was creating with @morally-gray-prospector. That account was so amazing, run by one of the smartest writers I've ever known here, but they were TOO good and poured themselves generously into their responses, which got them quite a following...and they burned themselves out! While my story with Ezra didn't have an ending, I never expected it to. I meant it when I said it to the writer: I'm just so happy to have an adventure with Ezra and every minute working on it was a joy that I will love forever. I'm glad they had fun too and didn't keep pushing themselves when it was no longer sustainable. <3

All time favorite ship? It's Din and Little Bird. Now that I know how that story is going to soft-end, they're my favorite couple of all time.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will Oh, I'll finish them all. Right now, Branded is in the most danger of lingering, since I have to figure some stuff out with them. But if I could solve the puzzle of Losing My Religion, then I have no doubt that I'm eventually going to get on with that one too.

What are your writing strengths? I don't know what my strengths are, but I like the magic of showing without showing. I like pacing. I enjoy trying to get the characters' voices right and make the dialog real.

What are your writing weaknesses? I am slow. And I make a show of "not following the rules" as if I'm some kind of rebel, but really, I'm just bad at following rules!!!!

Thoughts on dialogue in another language I try to avoid it for the most part because I usually mess it up pretty badly. I generally don't write Din in Mando'a because I haven't really heard him speak it in the series and he seems to always default to Basic even if he understands it spoken to him, so I can't shake the feeling that it's out of character. But Little Bird is a Mandalorophile, so she'd definitely know it and use it. I do sometimes pull in Spanish for Sweets, but it's usually because it's two characters who actually would speak it when Sunday's not around, and even then I try to make sure it's basic enough for folks to follow. The one time I tried to put Italian in I messed it up pretty good, but a beautiful reader helped correct it for me and I'm so so so grateful. <3

First fandom you wrote for I know I have a Doctor Who piece in a notebook somewhere hidden away. And I most likely have a slew of Ranma pieces from my college days. Were there any before that? Possibly.

Favorite fic you've written I have too many. I write really slow, so if it's actually made it to Tumbles, that means I loved it enough to manifest it. Some of them I love because of the fandom, some because of the relationship, some because of the world building, some because of the interaction, and most because of the good time I had writing it. Right now I'm seeing people reading Losing My Religion, and I've had reason to dip into some of those chapters and re-read a little and it's reminded me how much I love writing for the Star Wars universe, how much confidence I have in it. That was the first fic I really wrote, and I put so much of myself into it... so if I choose a favorite, I'll point there first even if it's not really finished yet.

Hi, sorry for asking you something stupid like this. what advice would you give to a person who wants to write for tumblr but gets discouraged easily when posting something and deletes it, sometimes I would like to post but my native language is not English and I get frustrated easily.

Writing can be so incredibly scary, and I can't imagine just how much scarier it is when English isnt your first language. Let me just tell you I still remember how horrified I was when I posted my first story on here (a head cannon about aether from genshin) I was trembling, so nervous about how others will react. But!! The beauty of it, is you grow!!

I used to be a fanfic writer on Wattpad when I was younger, and I just...threw myself out there! The key is to just...write. Some people may not like it, and thats okay. Its a learning process. I take "hate commentd" and turn it into criticism. Even though it doesn't particularly feel good, just remember they are just a stranger on the Internet with a sour outlook.

Writing is an art form, and art is subjective. So long as you are having fun writing the content, I don't see the harm.

And, you soon realize when you look back at your old fics- just how much you unconsciously grew! The trick really is just to write. You will get better at it over time and come into your own style the more you write, much like drawing or any other sort of hobby. Although the idea that other people may read it is daunting, I truly believe you should just go for it. Don't focus so much on how "perfect " it may be. You may get some feedback to help you improve over time, actually, I encourage when you're writing to ask people for advice. Nothing is better for improvement is the opinions, thoughts, and advice from your readers. but remember. You're doing it for free and for fun! So I wouldn't stress over the fine details too much, love.

Trust me. I understand, and so can a lot of writers, how it feels to delete something and re write something over and over again because you get so so nervous about how it will be perceived. Sometimes, I just need to sigh, hit post, and close it out, and distract myself with something else. Then, when I log back in, perhaps it wasn't as bad as I thought!

My advice? If you just write and go for it, you will naturally improve. Try not to let the anxiety of other eyes peering at your work scare you from doing something you like.

It may just turn out better than you thought <3

Second of all, I agree with that anon about finding Jimin fascinating. I have never been this intrigued by any other celebrity. I find him different but I don't know why. He is good looking but so are other idols. I mean it's Kpop. Most have to be good looking to make it. It's just such a weird thing. Like you can't help but notice him. Everytime I watch a BTS related content, he is the first person I notice. He isn't even my favourite but my eyes will instantly see him before anyone else. He also somehow leaves the strongest mark in any mvs or performances or even simple content. It's weird. I don't get it.

I saw your ask come in days ago, just as I was logging out of the app and felt a bit bad because I knew I wouldn't have any time for Tumblr for the next few days. Lately, I've actually wanted to remain active here, but life keeps getting in the way. I know it's not a big deal but I really am thankful that so many of you understand that I'm active here only when I can afford to be. 💜

On to more interesting topics, yes to everything you said about Jimin. There's no other member I write about here more than Jimin and it's something I don't ever feel like apologizing for because that man is infinitely captivating.

It's rare to see someone who recognizes exactly what he is, as young as Jimin did. There are many points over the years that Jimin has done something, and it registered in my head that this man is different. It's human to be a bit self-indulgent, to be a little self-absorbed, a little self-deception is a very natural mechanism that sometimes shields us from other people's projections and malicious intent. And so it struck me as almost inhuman in how acutely aware Jimin was to recognize his need to be seen, heard, in the most audacious format available to him as a 13 year old boy in Busan, South Korea.

His depth of self-knowledge, indicative of his unusually high intelligence, is at the source of his magnetism and charisma. In my opinion. You can see it in his eyes and it amplifies his already unnatural beauty.

I recently started speaking with a Jimin-bias on Twitter and we've become good friends. She described Jimin like this (and I've linked in sources):

That is one reason I am ecstatic about FACE. The music itself is one thing and we'll deal with that when we get there - I may or may not like the music (though given what he's released so far, the fact he's in BTS, and him working with RM and PDogg, I doubt it). But the subject matter of FACE: Park Jimin, would interest me even if I was on my death bed with only 10 KB of data available for me to use one last time.

I'm not very good at explaining what I mean, but I hope those who love him don't take offense when I call Jimin a freak. Because that is what I'm absolutely convinced he is. I don't know how else to express just how beastly I think he really is. Looking at him for me is like looking at one of those lenticular prints that shift into different things depending on lighting - like you turn your head one way looking at Jimin and you see a panther, turn your head another way and you see a dove, turn yet another way and you see a snake. And each animal is the most perfect expression of its form. He hones every quality he expresses with a meticulousness that scares me sometimes, because every example of that sort of personality I've seen in music has burnt out or passed before 40 (Prince being the only exception). The rapline have an identical quality but they seem less volatile than Jimin to me for some reason.

Anyway, I'm rambling. I'm excited about FACE and Anon when I saw your ask come in days ago, I suspected you were fishing (lol), but also I love Jimin and will take every excuse to talk about him. It's also way easier to talk about him than it is to talk about Yoongi, Namjoon, and Hoseok for me lol.

Speaking of which, it goes without saying that Jimin's evolution in self-awareness is also a result of his relationship with the rapline in BTS, as well as some other members. Jimin's comments about how he relies on those three, of what he thinks of their characters, and about how those three have assisted and influenced him, are consistent with how I see them too.

Back to Jimin, he's a once in a lifetime personality and there's nothing wrong with admitting it.

Hunter x Hunter. It's not my first fandom, but it's the first one that i've liked enough to write fic for.

I don't have 5 fics yet, but my most kudos'd one by far is "No, I Don't Accept Your Stupid Rose"

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes! I always try to respond, but I tend to do it all at once when I'm logged in to update, so it can take awhile. I'm not reading as much fic as I used to, so chatting in the comments and on tumblr is sometimes the only way I engage in fandom, and I appreciate the interaction that much more.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I guess "oh well, whatever, never mind" is the closest to an angsty ending? I still think it's happy, but I left it open ended.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

NIDAYSR is definitely the happiest. I even gave them an epilogue.

No

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I can finally say yes! There's just the one so far, so idk if I can say what kind it is? I'm into pining though, so any smut that I write will probably be the result of super pent up longing and frustration, since that's what I'm the most interested in.

I would love to say humour, but I think it's writing cringe. I've been told multiple times that I've induced terrible secondhand embarrassment on behalf of the characters (usually Gon), so I think this is my gift/curse.

Action for sure. I still have a hard time working out how to drop info so readers know what's happening.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Whenever I've come across it in fics or books it's cool, and I like when authors add extra info and context in the notes. I only speak one language, so I'd need help if I ever wanted to try it for myself.

To anyone reading this— I hope things are going well for you. If they aren't, I hope things start to look up for you soon.. you are worthy and are deserving of good things, and are beautiful in the ways that actually matter. You need to be kinder to yourself. I know it's hard sometimes, but you need to take care of yourself, even if you can only do so much at a time. That is enough.

The way people in your life have treated you, doesn't make you unlovable either even if it feels like it. Having a wood stove was nice compared to its electronic counterpart. It heated the whole house and didn’t have that annoying buzzing noise, according to Crystal.

It also meant having a lot of wood chopped and stored away. Which was fine by Nerissa. The others helped every now and then, but she didn’t mind having this chore all to herself. It was a good way to clear her head and let out some energy.

And being outside doing just that most days made her easy to find. It was usually common to have Cinder and Crystal come out to keep her company and chat, either together or separately. So turning to see Issac walking up to her instead, neither of the other two in sight.

They locked eyes for a moment, leveling each other up. Then she just shrugged, going back to her current tasks.

“What brings you here?” she asked, splitting a half log into quarters, throwing the chunks on the pile in her wheelbarrow.

“I’m going back to my parents’.” he said, then went quiet again.

It was annoying, having to pull conversation out of the other alpha. He didn’t have any issue talking to anyone else, just her it seemed.

Chop. Thud. “So you’ve come to say goodbye?” she prompted, glancing over at him from the corner of her eye.

“Yeah.”

Seriously, was she that terrifying? “When will you be back?” She fought to keep her voice light, not annoyed. Chop. Thud.

“I won’t.”

She stopped, turning to face him, to which he took a step back, avoiding her eyes. “What?”

Shrugging, he kicked the ground. “There’s not much point of me being here. Crystal isn’t my mare, she’s yours. And Cinder’s clearly happier with you around than me, so it’s easy math.” That had to be the most he’d said to her in one go. And he kept going. “I can find a new job, so you don’t have to feel guilty about that. And-”

“Is this because of what you were telling Crystal the other day?” she interrupted, placing her ax on the ground as she picked up her water bottle.

His face flushed and he laughed nervously. “Well we talk a lot, so you’ll have to be more specific.”

“When you were talking about being trans.” she said bluntly. “If that’s what you’re leaving for, you don’t need to. Cinder already sees you as a guy and that wouldn’t change if you told him you weren’t always. And I don’t think any different of you either, if that means anything.”

The emotions flashing rapidly across Issac’s face was kind of funny, even as his face grew worryingly red.

“But, but that was weeks ago!” he spluttered. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

She just shrugged, sitting down on the stump she’d been chopping on. “Because I figured you’d get awkward about it. Or didn’t want me to know. But if I knew you were thinking of leaving us because of it, I would have.”

At least he wasn’t gaping at her like a fish anymore, even if he still stared at her with wide eyes. “You… don’t want me to leave?” he asked in a small voice.

Shrugging again, she said, “You’re good company, even if you annoy me sometimes. And you make Cinder and Crystal happy. That’s all that matters to me.”

“Oh.” He smiled, still pink and shy. “Cool.”

It was like he was trying to test her. “Just promise me one thing?”

“Hmm?”

She got up and wrapped his forehead with her knuckles. “Talk to me like a normal person, please. I’m not going to tear your tongue out if you say more than five words at a time.”

Rubbing his head, he grinned up at her. “Deal!” Then he disappeared back into the house.

She sighed. At least that was progress. Somewhat. He was lucky she loved him, even if he hadn’t figured that out yet.

Someone in my life posed some interesting questions about stories recently! In considering them I figured I'd keep a record of my thoughts here on my tumblr web log, because what void should I holler into if not this one?

First, how I think about stories. I try to avoid thinking about them as morality plays or parables (mostly because this can keep me from engaging with challenging art) but I also don't like thinking about them purely as escapism. Each story has a reason it exists, whether that's entertainment, communication, or contemplation. They're designed to draw out our empathy, communicate a feeling, create a mood. Sometimes that's in service of something important to the author. Other times, it's something meant to distract. I don't judge a story based on its pretensions, or on its naked commercialism -- I try to judge based on its execution, how it's doing what it's doing, and how well it succeeds. There are great artists right now working solely with other people's licenses, doing work-for-hire gigs, and their skills are just as worthy of praise and appreciation as the latest semi-original high-concept novel hanging in the middle of the New York Times bestseller list.

Basically, I think about stories like stories! Or, if I absolutely have to be metaphorical, like buildings. Are the foundations strong? Is it doing anything special? Can I navigate it easily? How accessible is it? That last matters a lot to me, because it doesn't matter how cool the interior is if most people can't find their way inside.

Second, what do I need a story to do to recommend it to someone else? I'm gonna go with "accessibility" at the top, not in the disability sense but the populist one. Yeah, playing to the cheap seats can hurt a story a lot, and you obviously can't please everyone, but ignoring your audience doesn't make me appreciate your story much myself, let alone get me to recommend it to anyone else. You have to find a balance where what you're communicating isn't absolute nonsense to most of your audience. Not all! Just most. Effective communication of your thoughts, feelings, and ideas to a layman is something I think a lot of storytellers could stand to care about more when it comes to honing their craft, and that goes for folks outside of the arts especially. So if I find a story with a big concept, beautiful craft, intense emotion, and it's not too esoteric or inaccessibly written? That's great art in my book, and I'll tell everyone about it.

Next, what do I look for in stories? Now that is a tough one... I guess, beyond sheer execution (if your prose is good enough you can take me almost anywhere) I look for something that makes me care about its characters as it introduces me to their world, and does so without me feeling like I'm being told why I should care about the characters or what their world is like. This goes for everything from period pieces to stories set in places or communities I'm unfamiliar with, just as much as it goes for fantasy or science-fiction. I do generally have to care about the characters in a piece to really devote a significant amount of time to a story, though. If I don't, the other elements of the work (craft, originality, feeling) have to carry a whole lot more of the weight in order to get me to finish something.

What are red flags for me? Honestly, a big one is feeling either preached or condescended to. Even if it's politics or perspectives I agree with, if I feel like I'm being told what to think rather than thinking it on my own, or if I simply think the author doesn't trust me to understand what they're trying to say? I check out. Beyond that, when a story excuses terrible behavior in the interests of forcing me to sympathize with a character the author clearly favors, I also check out. There's other stuff too -- I don't much care for certain tropes when they feel obvious or sufficiently undisguised (at least try to put some kind of spin on it!) -- but those are the big ones I think. If I see those, my desire to continue drops real sharp.

A recent example of a story I really loved, because I try to stay positive: earlier this year I finished a book called A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine, which almost instantly became one of my favorite stories. I had to sit with my feelings for days before I really settled on that, too! I worry about recency bias sometimes, that an impact will dull with time, but Empire has lived in my head since I read it. It's a well-told and compelling yarn that dips into a number of my favorite genres (science-fiction, murder-mystery, political intrigue, thriller) told from one of my favorite POVs (first-person) that also happens to dig into concepts that I find super cool and interesting! Things like history, how it's recorded, who makes it, what matters versus what historians only think matters. Things like the colonialism, cultural imperialism, and the politics of empire -- the pressure of being a small community being subsumed by a larger, more dominant one, the complicated nature of being a person from two worlds, whether by choice or by birth, and so on. It's got a lot of thoughts about that stuff, and it can't touch on all of them with the depth that they deserve, but it knows enough to know there's no easy answer for a lot of its questions, and it manages to make that feel like a natural conclusion rather than a copout. A great novel, and one I recommend to most everyone I know!

One I'm still in the middle of that I need to get back to: Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. That's a work that I think is a bit inaccessible, with characters that I don't necessarily love (the protagonist is a professional torturer, if that tells you anything) but the sheer craft on display... my god. There are whole sections I've read, passages that describe a feeling that I've had before but never put to words, and it expresses them so effectively and with such excellent language that it carries me forward on those passages even when I'm unsure what this person's quest is or whether or not I even like them. And that's to say nothing of the depth of the text itself -- Ursula K. Le Guin famously called Gene Wolfe genre fiction's Herman Melville, and that's been borne out in what I've read so far. I've been listening to the Shelved by Genre podcast as I've been reading the book, and their own insights and analysis illuminate whole sections of the text that I would never have noticed otherwise, or would have without knowing exactly why! Awesome stuff.

well i just finished the demo with my first Ripper! I definitely did keep enjoying it, because holy shit!!!

1) the themes and atmosphere??? immaculate

2) your writing??? so beautiful and masterful it feels like I'm watching a live film rather than reading! great flow great descriptions

3) the characters??? im already so attached to all of them. I love our brother already and I'm dreading something bad happening to him arhg. All the characters are so compelling and nuanced! And the love interests??? Hello??? I canNOT choose between them. The dynamic each of them has with the Ripper (or can have) is simply perfect.

Idk, I don't have anything more to add. I'm not really eloquent when I write these asks alskkd but my point is I absolutely adore the demo and will be excitedly waiting for the next update.

Question: 1) will you keep updating often or wait until a good chunk/all of it is done? 2) will I be notified about the next update via email (subscribed after demo ended) or should I check here more often?

I will keep making public updates as much as I can, sometimes small and sometimes large, at least before the climax, where I would most probably keep the rest for private testing until the end (I haven't really thought much about it yet, so this might change). Also, the email subscription at the end is actually for CoG, not for my game specifically, so that won't really help, unfortunately.

For keeping track of updates:

Hollowed Minds does have a discord server where I post all my announcements, although it's a bit inactive at the moment.

to say the vibes have been off lately would be an understatement, wouldn’t it? because there has been a lot of negativity, too much for a place that is supposed to be about finding an outlet for your creativity and people to share your interests.

i know it has been difficult, draining to be around here and face all the discourse cankering the fandom.

Anna, this is so sweet, thank you for spreading some much needed love around here.

So, how i am feeling...

I'm not gonna lie, these last few months on Tumblr haven't been easy. And I'm guessing it hasn't been easy for many others. It really breaks my heart to see how easy it is for some people to spread hate and forget that behind an url there's a human being with feelings. People constantly fighting because they have different opinions, people stealing other people's work, people sending anon hate and people feeling like they can't find their place here. I hate that a place where we're supposed to share our love for someone/something can be so toxic sometimes.

I've had that feeling, several times, that I simply didn't fit in in the fandom and that as non writer I don't bring anything to the fandom. But then I think about the few amazing people I got to meet here and how happy interacting with them and getting to know them make me feel. These people are so important to me and are the reason why I log in every day.

On an even more personal note, I've been seeing a psychiatrist for a few weeks now and my new medication seems to work (fingers crossed it stays that way) because I have more good days than bad days. I hope that people who also deal with mental issues make this a priority and ask for help because they are definitely not alone.

Asmo Appreciation Week, Day 2: Best Cards, Part 1!

Welcome back, everyone!

So...Obey Me's cards, eh? Some are good, some are not-so-good, some send people into screaming frenzies, some send others into...other types of screaming frenzies.

When it comes to Asmo and his cards, I take it seriously. Since 2021, I've had a goal of collecting every card the game has released of him, and it's actually going pretty well. The same applies with Nightbringer; last night I put many stockpiled D-Energy cans to good use and grinded enough to get his UR+ achievable from the Hard Ruri Tunes missions!

Which leads me to today's topic: which of the lusty boy's cards do I think is the best?

It took so much strength to pick. And in the end, I couldn't choose just 5, just 7, or even just 10. Nope, I'm going all out and showing my TOP 20 cards! Because Tumblr has a limit on how many images can be used in a single post, today I'm going to be revealing the first half of the cards, from #20-#11, with the top 10 coming very soon.

A couple of things before I start. I did not include any of the NB-exclusive cards in this list, as those three I want to save for another day. And two, I am not basing my ranking on any of the Devilgrams attached to the cards, as some of them I have yet to obtain. I may mention them for some that I do own, but the basis of these ranking is on the art of the cards, the theming included, and meaningful context around its release. Lastly, all of the images here were found on the fandom's unofficial card-logging site, Karasu-OS.

Anyway, let's begin!

To start with, I have a couple of honorable mentions that just barely missed the cutoff:

HM 1: HLD, the New Dream Team! (Toys event SSR)

That event with the onesies was definitely one of the more chaotic ones, that's for sure. And while it's not one of my favorite sets, I always liked Asmo's pink bunny outfit. It's so floppy and derp that I can't help but smile.

HM 2: Memories and Pale Shades (Cursed Seed SSR)

This event...oh boy. Remember when I said that release context played a part in my ranking? This is one where it's a bit clear. The art and composition is beautiful, being fed a dango and admiring the blossoming trees, but the circumstances that this card came out in spoiled a bit of the joy it would normally have. Still, the positives still weighed out enough for it to land here with a good word.

Now then, on to the list!

#20: Party Hopping

It's cards like this that get the wheels in my brain turning. A funny thing about cards is that their image sometimes doesn't match the Devilgram attached or even the event or Nightmare entirely. Even without having the card in my possession (yet), cards like this let my imagination run wild in terms of what is happening in the image. Why is Asmo dressed like Little Red Riding Hood? Why is he crying? Did he come from a party? Did something happen before or after it? The card itself is simple, but allows for lots of mental creativity.

#19: Asmo Gives Back <3

This one unfortunately got held back by the initial design of the card. For some reason, that blue suit of his just irks me... But the unlocked DF version makes up for it in spades. For as much of a party animal Asmo is described to be, we don't see him much in any kind of club or bar setting with the works attached in art. This card remedied that, showing him flushed and happily drinking away, clothes rustled around and overall giving proof of a good time for his special day.

#18: Illuminating My Love

This is an example of simplicity reigning supreme. Both of the card versions don't have anything special with outfits, just casual and demon forms, but it's the actions that hit it in the feels for me. Small lights, whether it be from fairy lights or tiny candles, bring a sense of warmth to both of the card arts. And considering these were released for Devil Day '22, warmth and love are the perfect things to feel when it comes to these.

#17: Asmos and the Fox Mask?

Much like #19, this is one where one design makes up for another, but this time for a different reason. I'll admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the yokai-style theming the DF unlock was attached to, but that is mainly just personal preference. The initial art given though? AMAZING. This is the start of where theming starts to be a basis for why I like a card, and to start it off, I LOVE masquerade balls. And this be one of many cards you see where Asmo is wearing a dress, get used to it.

#16: The Annoying Influencer

Another type of simplistic card, but this one gets bonus points for bringing ALL the color, enough that some may find it a bit annoying (eh? get it? I'll stop). Another birthday card, it warms my heart whenever I see images of Asmo enjoying a treat or any food in general. One of the tropes thrown around a lot involves him going on diets often to keep his figure, so to see him openly enjoying snacks he likes (especially here, with his favorite Surprise Guest item!) will always make me just a bit happier.

#15: A Gorgeous Phantom Thief

There was a time when I adored the Phantom Thief and Detective trope in stories, a sort of cat-and-mouse game, if you will. Also usually having a Tuxedo Mask-esque aesthetic about them, it always felt like you were on the edge of your seat, waiting for what would happen next. And while this is another card that I don't own as of now, I can still imagine the picture in my head of this lovely man wanting to steal every rare diamond and gem in existence, but the one thing he can't seem to take so easily is your heart.

#14: Looking at Someone

WHY DID THIS CARD NIGHTMARE HAVE TO BE SO SHORT?! Outside of the screaming, this is one of the cards I would be ecstatic to own, if only the circumstances on its release weren't so daunting with no re-release in sight. But even so, it's another example of simplicity being all you need. Asmo surrounded one of his most iconic motifs, makeup as far as the eye can see with a relaxed look on his face is really all I need when it comes to this card.

#13: Asmo and a Treasure Chest

Both of these images, the themes, expressions..."shoot through my heart" indeed... While pirates aren't my favorite universe to dabble into (similar to yokai in terms of preference), the two art features given to this card of the same thing go beyond my choices and SLAY me. Double revolvers on the initial, and...THIS...on the DF unlock? Oh anyone in the three realms take me now!

#12: That Special Someone

Oh the nostalgia! Even if it's only 4 years ago, the initial set of cards will always be special to me, and this particular initial UR is no exception. It was definitely a tricky sucker to get, taking me almost THREE YEARS to get lucky in Chapter A, and it still remains part of some of my best teams to this day. And the theming gives another combination of fitting the character (you can't expect someone with their own private bathroom to NOT have a shot of themselves in the tub), and my own secret tastes (self-care and beauty elements are addictive to me).

#11: Catch the Lost Bunnies!

Rounding out the first half is the inverse of the following card. Instead of taking nearly three years, this sucker came home on a FREE single pull! I have never had better luck on that gacha since then, and I'm glad it came from this lovely card. Bunnies and rabbits are Asmo's secondary animal motif (the primary being scorpions), and combining this with the bunny boy event happening at the same time, it's just a celebration of two different kinds of cuties! I wanna cuddle them both!

And with that, I have to hold the breaks. But don't worry, soon we'll go through the second half, the top 10 of the bunch. Which cards can top these? Have any guesses?

HI BEAUTIFUL Honestly all I can say is use a bunch of tags and post often and be active. Post memes about fandoms, post fanfiction, post aesthetics or moodboards or pictures or cosplays, ect. whatever your thing is and do it often.

Follow people because that'll get their attention to look at your account, and like I mentioned earlier use those tags like you have a collection of clothing tags from the store (aka use a lot of tags this is like the most important thing).

Really it takes a while sometimes, I just started getting more popular like two months ago and I've already been on Tumblr for a while, so patience is also the key.

And no matter what, some posts won't do as well as others, so sometimes having a post with not many or even no likes is bound to happen, and then you'll have some posts that like BLOW UP.

Just be patient and have fun, do it for yourself, not for likes! So like stated before, just use tags, follow and interact, be active. And also log all your random ass thoughts here because people tend to think random stuff is funny Lmao.

I WAS LIKE ‘hey let me check where my bkg fic is and how it’s doing cuz like why not’ AND I CANNOT FIND IT ANYWHERE IN THE TAGS ??? it then makes sense that i just suddenly stopped getting notifications bc people weren’t discovering the post either !!!! it’s not like i’m inactive either - i literally post shit on the dash everyday bc i’m talkative???

the other red flag is that not even three hours before this happened, i was automatically logged out of tumblr??? for no reason??? this happens sometimes but i have no idea why and it’s freaky every time it occurs.

and so i’m like ‘aw man, that sucks :( i’m gonna input every tag again one by one on the post to see if it shows up’ (and it does eventually), but i was so ready for my recent bakugo fic to just be a secret between me and my followers bc it could not be discovered any other way…

it’s not abt the notes at all, i mean WERK I LOVE GETTING APPRECIATION FOR MY WRITING, but tags is one of the main ways you can get discovered on tumblr and i love finding other simps !! not having that visibility is scary bc what’s even more freaky is that not showing up on tags or search means that you could have been shadowbanned for a reason that tumblr won’t disclose !!!
