Socializing 2.0 - Talking to People Who Are Upset
I was trying to write this as a reblog to my other "how to socialize" post and it keeps glitching out, which is very irritating. So here, let's try it on its own post.
Last time I talked about some tips for making small talk, and some scripts/talking points for how to show interest in what people are saying even if the topic doesn't excite you.
Now, I want to talk about a different scenario that can be really challenging for everybody (but, I think even harder for folks who don't come by empathy easily). Which is: How do you talk to somebody who is upset or having a tough time? How do you express sympathy without making the thing about you and your feelings?
While I'm by no means an expert at this, and I can't claim I've got the solution for every scenario you might encounter, I do have some tips and techniques that have helped me along the way and hopefully they can prove useful to you, too.
STEP ONE: Identifying that a person is upset
Sometimes it's very easy to tell that someone is upset, because they will yell "ARGH I AM SO MAD ABOUT THIS!!!" or they will be crying or some other obvious outward sign. Other times, though, it can be kind of tricky to tell. It's even harder in text, where you sometimes have to guess whether someone is jokingly mad or mad-mad when they post keysmashes, all caps, angry emojis, etc etc.. Folks also sometimes deflect from their actual emotions by joking them off. Or they'll say something you feel is alarming, but then don't act like it's a big deal.
People are complicated, in other words. So it's OK if you get this wrong sometimes. Everybody does.
In general, some signs that people might have something the matter:
Obvious outward expression of emotion (yelling, crying)
Acting more withdrawn or subdued than normal
Appearing distracted or disengaged
Looking more disheveled than usual
Acting unusually rambunctious or like they're compensating
If you notice somebody seems upset but you're not 100% sure, you have a few options:
Politely ignore it.
Let them bring it up if they want to. This is a safe bet if you are not very close -- ie, they're strangers, coworkers, acquaintances etc. HOWEVER, if you choose this route, you can still do this person a kindness by not imposing on them.
For example, if your coworker seems upset about something and you have a question about the job, could you ask someone else instead of approaching upset coworker? Could you quietly do them a favor? For example, could you offer to take over for them at the register and let them work in the back? Offer to watch things while they take a break? Small kindnesses can make a big difference in someone's day. It's not always possible, but it's nice when you can!
If nothing else, try to avoid dumping anything on them while they seem upset. If you're also having a shit day, you can probably find someone else to rant to.
Ask if they're okay.
This is more appropriate if you have a rapport with the person. If they are your friend or romantic partner, or if you have a rapport with them and want to express that you care, it's probably best to acknowledge that you've noticed something is wrong. Avoid saying anything that might be perceived as aggressive; don't way "What's wrong" or (even worse) "What's wrong with you?" Instead, try, "Is everything okay? You seem a little down today."
They may respond:
I'm just a little tired
I'm kind of distracted
What? Oh, haha, no, I'm fine...
Sometimes they mean this at face value, but more often what they actually are communicating is "I'm not OK but I don't feel comfortable talking about it."
That's fine. Don't pry. Drop the subject, and proceed as above -- politely ignore their perceived signs of discomfort, but be kind to them and avoid dumping anything on them unnecessarily.
Do not be surprised or alarmed if, after some time has passed, they come back around to reopen the subject and start to open up about whatever is bothering them. Then again, don't take it personally if you never figure out what the deal was. Maybe they really did just have a headache. Maybe they had an issue they figured out on their own. Either way, it's no longer your problem.
(note: this is a little more complicated if it's someone you live with and it goes on for a while, but that scenario is out of scope for this post).
STEP TWO: They Told Me They're Upset
Okay! So whether you started here with them, or this just came up after you asked if things were ok, you now have confirmed that a person is upset!
If they tell you the gist of what's going on, it's a good idea to acknowledge it. But stay fairly neutral about it and avoid value judgments.
For example: "My grandpa died"
An appropriate response might be, "I'm sorry to hear that" or "Oh jeez, I'm sorry :("
Some other great all-purpose responses when someone says something bad happened are: "Dude, that sucks :(" and "oh no!" or "oof."
Next -- and this is really important -- you should follow up by asking, "Do you want to talk about it?"
(you can also use that question any time someone says something vague like "I had a shitty day today" or "I'm so pissed off.")
If they say no, they don't want to talk about it, follow up with, "Well, let me know if there's anything I can do." And then, ideally, volunteer a couple options of things you can do, depending on your relationship and what you are capable of doing: cover their shift, approve their time off, take care of a chore, listen if they change their mind.
If they DO want to talk about it, by all means, let them talk.
Ask if they would like advice or if they just want to get it off their chest. If they don't ask for advice, don't give them any.
Use your active listening skills and ask questions. Avoid prying or traumatic questions, but don't be shocked if you receive more intensive answers than you expected. A safe question to ask when someone says someone died is to say, "Were you close?" or if a pet died, "How long did you have them?"
Validate their emotions, but avoid bringing your own judgments to the table unless they ask for your honest opinion. For example, if someone is ranting about their romantic partner, it's cool to say, "I'm sorry that happened. You shouldn't have to put up with that." but it's not so cool to say "Your SO sounds like a dick, you should leave them."
Ask if they would like a distraction or to be cheered up. If you're in person, and you're amenable to the task, "Do you want a hug?" is also acceptable. (just respect whatever they said).
You'll want to be mindful of your energy. I personally have the best luck with projecting calm, neutral, slightly joke-y vibes. "It do be like that" and "Dude, that sucks" delivered with some genuine warmth in your tone or an empathetic emoji can go a long way.
STEP THREE: How to Not Make It About You
There are a few ways you can unintentionally make something be about you when someone else brings up something that's upsetting them:
One-upping them. "That's nothing. This one time, I had...."
Invalidating them or passing judgment. "That's not a big deal" or "What an asshole!" (you can agree with them that someone is being a dick, bit they need to be the one who says it first)
Trying to relate to them by telling a story about your own experiences, which ends up taking a really long time, or puts them in the awkward position of feeling like they have to comfort you.
OK. So a couple things.
Relating to people with relatable experiences is not a bad thing! In fact sometimes it can be really helpful! HOWEVER if you go that route you need to be really cautious of a couple points:
The story needs to be brief and stick only to the most relevant details. it's FINE if you don't provide the full absolute context of the entire scenario. You just need to tell them the relatable part, and then relate that back to them and how they are feeling.
For example:
"I'm so sorry to hear your dog died. I had to put my cat to sleep last year and I remember how guilty I felt, worrying whether I waited too long. Did you have a lot of time to prepare with your dog or was it pretty sudden?"
This is good! Here you are relaying information that you understand some of what they're going through, introduce an emotion that may or may not resonate with them, and then hand the conversation back to them with a question. Now they might tell you all about how, yes, they worried about that same thing too! Or no, their thing was really sudden and unexpected. Or whatever they tell you!
Then you can respond to that thing like, "Oh wow, I can't imagine how rough that must have been." or "Jeez, that's so hard. How are the kids taking it?" or whatever else seems appropriate in that moment.
STEP FOUR: OK But Now They Won't Shut Up About It?
One downside to expressing concern in other people's affairs is that this can sometimes mark you as their new confidant, purely because people so rarely just listen and care about other people.
If it's just the occasional bit of ranting, it's probably fine to just let them do their thing. And if they're coming to you to rant and off-load their stuff, then it's probably fine and expected that you can respond in time and maybe you guys are just ranting buddies.
But if you end up in a scenario where they can ALWAYS complain about their thing, but you can NEVER complain about your thing, that is a toxic dynamic! That requires some intervention! Friendship cannot be built on that foundation.
If you've expressed your condolences or listened to someone rant about whatever is pissing them off and you feel you have nothing more to offer the conversation, you can just say that: "I don't know what else to say, really. It's a tough situation and I hope it gets better for you."
And then you can just. Exit the conversation.
Some additional lines to keep in your back pocket include:
"I think that's beyond my pay grade to help with. Have you spoken with (a therapist/counselor/clergy member/whatever)?"
"That's so frustrating! You should definitely go talk to (the person they are complaining about) about that."
"Well, if you ever need someone to (specific thing you actually are willing to do), let me know."
Being kind to people and showing concern for their problems does not mean you have to become an unpaid therapist or doormat. You get to maintain boundaries about that stuff.
Anyway! This is super long! There is so much more I could get into here but I'll leave it at that. I hope this is in some way helpful to you.

Things that have happened to in Fallout 3 so far as I go into the game not knowing anything at all about it, part 3 (part two is in the reblogs of the og post I just don’t want to make it any longer lol):
-Game just straight up crashed randomly (love u Bethesda) but thankfully it was like soon after I turned it on so I didn’t really lose anything important. What was weird though is that after closing it and reopening it, it was still crashing. Like it just froze with glitched audio on the title screen. Also somehow when I tried to open a whole other game to give it a break the glitching sound continued over to a whole other goddamn game for some reason. I am using past tense here but I actively write this stuff as it happens (I have this post drafted) and literally have no idea what to do rn because I’m playing on Xbox GamePass and like wha (I’ll figure it out)
-I found the mechanist and tried to do that speech thing on him where you try to tell him he’s become just as big of a problem as the AntAgonizer, the first time it didn’t work and he killed me. The second time it immediately worked, and after like 3 lines of dialogue he took the suit off and I completed the entire quest. Like. Like the whole thing. What the fuck. I don’t even know what the AntAgonizer looks like yet. I was. I was expecting a little more there
-Was hanging out in the Rivet city marketplace for the first time, got some pre-war clothes, gossiped with some NPC’s, all of sudden one of them starts running and I’m getting shot at, I leave and come back and everything’s normal, don’t know what that was about but I LIVED THIS TIME THOUGH HA
-Was going through hell in DC as you do and started repeatedly clipping through the ground with every step I took, had to reload a save to get it back to normal
-Whatever you do, do not take a left after you discover Friendship Heights
-Found an area that was full of raiders to practice my combat and the raiders just like. Hung a bunch of dismembered bodies from the ceiling of one room and I will not lie I was a bit aghast. Appalled if you would. Flabbergasted. Like have some class???
-Made it to the underworld, I’m considering killing Ahzrukhal to learn more about Charon without having to pay, but the people there already probably don’t trust me and I don’t want them to become hostile because I killed him lmao
-Found a glitched like,,, floating armor I think??? It was just a chest plate and mask floating in midair in some closed off area of an underground metro station, and I’m not joking it scared the shit out of me because it looked like a floating corpse staring straight at me alsjdhakksj. When I walked into it gravity kicked in and it fell to the ground, but when I went back into the same area again later it respawned, floating again.
-I’ve realized that there’s a counter for “pants exploded” in your stats and I am,,, very curious on when that will be a thing I can do
Notes:
-I still have absolutely NO idea how to use V.A.T.S. properly, so I avoid it, so I’m absolutely dogshit at any combat in the game. I kind of think that at this point I should probably work on it because I’m struggling to make any major progress with the quests. So I’ll make sure to practice sometime
-From now on I’ll tag these posts as “fo3 with Stupid” (the old ones are tagged with this as well)

Allison is being quiet. Not that no one else is being quiet. But it’s the kind of silence that makes you think something bad is about to happen.
Maybe it’s the far away look in her eyes or that fact that she is sitting completely still, that has Luther on edge.
“What’s wrong?” he asks her through his own fading voice.
She opens her mouth as if to say something before closing it again, then reopening it. “I feel like I’m going to sneeze” – she cuts herself off with an involuntary breath before quickly warning, “I’m gonna sneeze!”
Luther drops his book out of his grasp before all hell breaks loose.
“Hek’shhew!” Allison leads a chorus of sneezes that sound from around the room.
Diego who had been slow to abandon the box of tissues he had been holding, sends it sailing behind him into a wall.
“Sorry!” Allison squeaks nervously, afraid to look up. She breaths out a sigh of relief when she sees the room still intact. Diego’s tissue box being the only casualty.
“How far did you go?” Luther asks Five who walks back into the room as he picks up his book.
“Only round the corner” he says, waving off Diego who offers him a tissue from the box he had just retrieved.
“Aww, I thought you were going to try beat the record” Klaus whines from where he’s sprawled out on one on the couches.
“I thought I told you I have no control over that” Five reminds as he sits down in the chair next to him. “And even if I did, I’m not going to try and beat a block down the street.”
“You’re no fun” Klaus complains, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Well, did you beat your record? How many ghosts did you conjure?” Five throws him a side-eye.
“I was smart, dear brother, and suppressed my sneeze.”
“See, whose no fun now?” Five rolls his eyes.
“Ha’ussh!” without warning, Allison surprises them with a second sneeze.
This time they weren’t so lucky and after the volley of sneezes does its round, it’s closely followed by screams of fright. Ben’s ghost having manifested in the centre of the lounge, tentacles flailing.
“Sorry, that snuck up on me” Allison apologises guiltily but it is largely ignored.
“I didn’t know ghosts could sneeze” Diego says, picking up the box of tissue that had once again gone flying.
Despite the fact that Ben’s ghost had been too weak to connect with anything, Five was still glad that he had blinked out of the room.
“Good thing he didn’t destroy anything” Luther sighs as he drops his book to the ground, having accidentally crushed its spine.
“Speaking of destruction. Should someone check on Vanya?” Klaus suggests.
“I’ll go” Five volunteers. After all it is the smartest option with him able to make the quickest escape if necessary.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The anechoic chamber still wasn’t a particularly welcome sight for anyone, but it was a vital mechanism if they wanted all the windows in the house intact.
Vanya had kept herself holed up in it over the last few days. They’d offered for her to come up and stay with the rest of them but she hadn’t wanted to risk it, and really neither did they. But she was happy enough down there. They’d made sure to move a mattress and some other bedding down for her, and she had books to read and a few other things to do.
“You still alive in there?” Five asks as he pulls open the door. There was no point knocking since she wouldn’t be able to hear it.
“HAR’USSHH!”
Instead of being greeted by words, Five is meet with a sneeze that shatters the glass of water he held in his hand. He purses his lips and freezes, looking down to the puddle at his feet.
“God, Five. I’m sorry” Vanya groans, leaning her head back against the wall.
“Nah, I’ll take the fault for that. Shouldn’t have brought a glass cup” Five admits his mistake. “I’ll get another one.”
It’s only a few seconds until he blinks back and hands Vanya water in a plastic cup. As he steps back, he pulls the sleeves of his sweatshirt over his hands, clamping his jaw tightly as it starts to chatter.
“Here” Vanya holds out a blanket to him, not missing that he is shivering in his water splattered sweatshirt.
“I don’t want to take it from you” Five shakes his head.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m hot at the moment” Vanya insists.
“Really?” Five’s voice raises a pitch. He was cold even before water got splashed on him.
Vanya nods to him and he takes the blanket from her, wrapping it around himself as he sits down next to her.
“You still got that fever?” she asks, her face slightly pinched in worry.
“Think we all do” he tells her as she reaches forward to place a hand on his forehead.
“I think mine’s about to break” she says before Five reaches out his own hand to feel for her fever.
They stay frozen that way with a look of concentration on their faces until Vanya suddenly laughs and pulls away. “Yeah, this probably won’t work.”
Five scoffs a little as he withdraws his hand as well, both of their temperature judgment being thrown out of whack.
“How’s everyone else up there?” Vanya asks as she leans back against the wall.
Five clears his throat lightly as he leans back as well. “Klaus is still adamant he’s dying, Diego’s constantly complaining, and Luther is strangely tolerable because he’s not saying anything.”
“And Allison?” Vanya prompts.
Five shrugs. “Fine, I guess.”
“And you?”
“Been better, been worse” he weighs up. “What about you?”
“Same as you” she smiles slightly at him. “Get’s kind of lonely down here sometimes. It’s nice for the company.”
“Believe me you wouldn’t have wanted our company before.”
“What do you mean?” Vanya’s brow furrows.
“Allison sneezed, Ben manifested tentacles and all, it was a real shitshow” Five labels down quickly.
“Shit!” Vanya exclaims, sitting up from the wall suddenly.
“It’s fine” Five settles her. “He was too weak to hit anything.”
Vanya breathes out a sigh of relief as she leans back, settling her shoulder against Five’s. “Would have been kind of funny to see it. Did Diego scream? I feel like Diego would have screamed.”
“I don’t know, I was out of the room” Five admits. “But I’m pretty sure everyone left in there did.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
For a while they talk about nothing in particular. Vanya shows Five one of the new books she is reading, and he tells her more stories of things happening upstairs. Mid way through recounting an argument Klaus and Luther were having over whether onion rings are vegetable doughnuts, Five suddenly throws off the blanket and strides a few steps away from Vanya.
“You all right?” she asks, quickly placing a hand out on the ground now that Five isn’t there to lean against. Her face twisting in concern at the sudden movement.
Five nods quickly while his chest expands sporadically. “Gonna sneeze” he manages to stutter out before he ducks into his elbow.
“Heh’isshh, hekishew, hih’isshh!”
Vanya should be concerned with her brother teleporting around the vicinity, after all teleporting even with control is not an ordinary thing. Though she figures that as long as she can see where he lands everything will be okay. And she can, watching him land over by the door to the elevator, back in the chamber, then in the centre of the basement.
“Heh’russhhew”
He finishes his final sneeze in the doorway of the chamber.
“Whoa, that was a lot” she states.
Five sniffles and shrugs before leaning against the doorframe. “At least I didn’t go far.”
He doesn’t say it but Vanya can tell that it took a lot out of him. “You look tired. You should go up and get some rest.”
Five nods minutely. “You’ll be all right down here?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“Just… yell out if you need anything.”
“Come on now, Five” Vanya smirks at him before he disappears. “You and I both know me yelling would be a colossal mistake.”

Nick Amaro x Reader - Chapter 4
Tumblr media
“Nick watch out!” you docked behind a building, just barely dodging the bullet that came hurtling in your direction. You and Nick were in pursuit of a suspect, unfortunately he picked the hard way. Nick was a bit closer to him, his gun drawn. You had the guy cornered in the basement of the building. He didn’t have anywhere to go, you guessed that’s why he was trying to shoot his way out.
Sooner or later he was going to run out of bullets. Nick was marking him. He shifted from the area he was sheltering behind. You frowned, realizing Nick was trying to move in. The guy still had a few bullets. If Nick made the wrong move it was over. You still had your back pressed to a pillar, a safe distance away. Nick stormed out and you panicked, there wasn’t anywhere else for him to use as a cover. The guy must have noticed because he jumped out shooting wildly.
“NICK!!”
 A wave of energy swept over the entire area. The shock wave sent the perpetrator as well as his bullets hurtling away. He crashed into the wall, falling unconscious. Nick was also forced backwards. He hit the ground roughly and you cursed running to him. “Shit! Are you okay?” he grunted, sitting up slowly.
“W-What was that, did a bomb go off nearby?” he was disoriented, looking around for the guy you’d been chasing.
“I-I have no idea, but I’m glad it happened when it did.” you lied. It was getting harder everyday to keep the truth from him. Especially since he was the type to always take action.
You were so scared of him getting hurt, so without thinking you’d use your powers. You helped him to his feet and he moved to the now unconscious male, grabbing his gun and calling for backup. You closed your eyes when you felt the familiar throbbing against your head. Nick moved closer to you when he hung up the phone. “Hey are you alright?”
“Yeah I just need to..” your words trailed off as your body slumped. “(Y/N)!!” Nick held you, lifting you into his arms when he realized you were no longer conscious.
~~~
“How is she?” The doctor came out, greeted by the three detectives. Nick, Rollins and Fin were in the waiting room. “She’s fine, it seems it was just a dizzy spell. No fractures or injuries to her brain.” Nick sighed. Rollins smiled.
“Come on I told you she was tough.”
“Kid’s gonna be fine.” Fin added, tapping Nick on the shoulder.
“There is something that is very unusual.” The doctor’s words made Nick’s head raise. He stared at the woman in question.
“What do you mean?”
She pulled out what looked like an x-ray. “It could have been a glitch in the system but…” she seemed unsure of how to phrase the words.
“This scan is an image on Ms. (L/N)’s brain activity. On a normal scale, we use about ten percent of our full capacity. From what I’m reading on her scans, she’s utilizing at least eighty percent.”
All three detectives looked stunned. “Are you sure?” Rollins questioned.
The doctor shook her head. “It has to be a malfunction, I’ll have the machine checked. Aside from that, everything else is perfectly fine. She’s awake so you can visit her now if you wish.”
“That would be great.” Nick smiled. They were instructed where you were,  more than happy to see your face. The doctor’s words were still very much running through Nick’s head. When they turned the corner they could see you through the blinds, you were on the phone with someone.
“Yeah, it’s the first time that’s ever happened Barry.” When you caught sight of them you hurried to hang up the phone. “I’ll call you later.” you ended the call, a wide grin spreading on your face as they walked in. “No need to bring the cavalry I’m fine.” you said. Fin walked over ruffling your hair. You batted him away with a laugh. “Really gave us a scare there newbie.” Rollins stated.
“I guess the excitement got the better of me.” you said. Nick was looking at you with an unreadable expression. “Anyway, doc says I can leave in a few hours, they just need to make sure they didn’t miss anything. “
“Well, we gotta get back to the precinct. Good job on your bust though. “ Rollins said. You nod.
“I’ll wait until you're done, I’m your partner after all.” You were really hoping Nick would go with them, but you managed a smile. “Thanks.”
“Well see ya, don’t go getting into any more trouble.” Fin said. He turned with Rollins, waving to you as they left. Nick made himself comfortable, he pulled up a chair next to your bed.
“How are you feeling?”
“I’m fine Nick, really. I think all that adrenaline just got the better of me. I got really scared when that guy started shooting at you. Stop putting yourself in danger like that. You could have just waited until he emptied his clip.” Nick smirked. “Now what fun would that be.” you glared at him.
“Alright fine, I’ll be more careful.” you rolled your eyes. “I swear, sometimes I feel like the senior detective.” You really were scared that you were going to lose him. It had to be why that blast released. What terrified you is the fact that you’d never done that before. That’s why you called Barry, in hopes that he could help you figure out what it was, and how to avoid it happening again. It may have gotten the job done, but Nick was caught in the crossfire, and you definitely couldn’t risk putting him in danger.
Your brows knitted when you felt a pounding against your temple. You sucked in a breath, pressing your palm to your forehead, leaning forward in the bed. Nick stood, moving to your side. “What’s wrong are you in pain?” You could tell just from his voice that he was concerned. He was sitting next to you now, reaching over to help in any way he could.
“Do you need me to get the doctor?” you shook your head at his question. “That’s okay, I’m fine. Just a migraine.” you covered. When you reopened your eyes you were shocked at how close he really was. He was sitting directly in front of you. Up close you could make out his features more clearly. For a man he looked awfully boyish, especially for his age. His face portrayed youth as well as maturity. That dark hair, those sinful lips..
“Damn it (Y/N) get it together! He’s your partner!” you tried to get a bit of distance between you, Nick must have taken it as another shock of pain, because he moved closer, placing his hands on your cheeks to check your eyes. “Are you sure that’s all it is?” he was studying you and you were struggling to keep your heart rate under control.
You knew he was just worried, but the lack of space was not helping with your racing thoughts. “I’m fine..” you whispered. At your tone he looked at you, really looked at you this time. He must have realized just how intimate this particular position was.
His hands were still holding your face in his surprisingly soft hands. You expected them to be somewhat rough, especially in his line of work. All you could really feel was the warmth emitting from them, visibly warming your cheeks. His thumb brushed your skin, you shivered at the small action. You clenched your eyes shut. You were positive your eyes were glowing now.
You didn’t want him to see it, your struggle to keep control.
“Look at me (Y/N).”
It sounded like an order, yet it was so needy, like he was begging you to look at him.
You let out a shaky breath, opening your eyes slowly. You were relieved when all you saw was the adoration in his eyes. His smile was so cute, it made your stomach do wild flips. Someone clearing their throat in the background knocked you both out of your daze. Nick pulled away, standing as the doctor walked in. “I’ll wait for you outside.” Nick stated, all but running out the room.
The woman now standing before you gave a wink. “He’s very handsome. I envy you Ms. (L/N).” you blushed, laughing it off. “It’s not like that. We’re just partners.” She just smiled at you.
“I just wanted to let you know that everything is fine. If you get any more dizzy spells, I’d advise that you come back. There may be an underlying cause. It would be better if we spot any problems before they become major.”
“I understand, thank you doctor.”
“No problem.” she replied, scribbling on her clipboard.
Refs and Info for my Anti. Top right picture was made for me by Chenaniaharticles on DA. The reddish lines on his arms are scars. The top left picture is his alternate outfit and the picture was made for me by EvinaRain on DA. Bottom right picture is a ref for the gages he wears with his alternate outfit. Bottom left picture is a more detailed drawing of the choker that is shown in the alternate outfit picture, the symbol on it is the Japanese kanji for demon, Dark gave the choker to him as a gift. I drew the bottom pictures. His bracelets don’t actually glow btw.
Info:
Anti was apart of Jack from day one. But he was originally dormant, not having a purpose and thus wasn’t fully formed. Not untill the fateful day when Jack got that bad cut over his eye and it got infected. Anti finally started to form properly after that, becoming a sort of safety net. His purpose was to take the brunt of injuries and negative emotions, essentially a protective shield, making it seem like Jack wasn’t as badly injured as he actually had been. That first incident is what caused his left eye to be green, he took the worst of the infection and the damage has caused his power to leak out of that eye, making it perpetually green. Over time he developed a mind of his own, and naturally he wanted a chance at being apart of the world at least a little. Jack however was afraid of this entity inside his head and kept him locked away. Anti, being trapped in a mind that didn’t want him and being forced to take on the worst of Jack’s injuries and emotions, grew depressed. He felt broken, like an incomplete being whose sole purpose was to be hurt. That is, till Youtube started. When fans took some of the creepy stuff Jack did for fun and gave it a persona, he saw an opportunity to finally be something more. Previously without a name, he took on the name of the character the fans had created and started molding himself after their ideas. They gave him purpose, and the attention he so desperately desired after Jack had ignored him for all those years. He drew strength from them, finally starting to break from the chains that kept him trapped. And in October of 2016 he started his campaign to show Jack that he should never have locked him away. And he had the perfect plan on how to end with a bang. He had taken the worst of Jack’s injuries for years, so for once, he would harm Jack. Unfortunately for him though he still ended up taking on most of the injury, Jack ending up only having irritated looking red marks on his neck. While Anti got a deep scar that sometimes reopens when using his powers. However, he still got the desired affect. Fans noticed him more than ever and Jack finally understood that what he had done was wrong, agreeing to let him out now and then, sometimes for the fans, as long as he never tried to hurt themselves again. Anti has altered his appearance to fit some of the more popular fan creations. The spiked up, dark green hair a few have, the fangs a few have, the paler skin a lot have, eyes that change between the various versions though they are naturally one blue and one green that both glow green when using his powers, shadows under his eyes, slightly pointed ears, various gages though he uses the small black ones the most, and then two recent additions. After the throat cutting incident he wanted something to cover up the scar when he isn’t in videos. He took inspiration from some fanart for a fan contest Jack had liked on Tumblr and started wearing a black remote activated shock collar and also took a liking to the character’s green and black hoodie, though he wears a long sleeved one with a green and black septiceye along the right sleeve. The collar was originally only to hide the scar but, after curiosity made him want to know what getting shocked feels like, he now wears it for fun as well. He likes the rush of adrenaline he gets from being shocked, plus it kinda just feels cool. Nothing sexual though. Due to taking the worst of Jack’s injuries, Anti has multiple scars along his torso and his arms and legs. Only a few are bad enough to be visible to the naked eye though. Most are extremely faded and only visible under certain lighting. He still likes to cause trouble for Jack, but it’s not meant to be malicious and is all in good fun. He just likes messing around and playing pranks. He is practically a child in certain ways since being trapped for so long didn’t exactly allow him to develop normally. His personality is pretty similar Jack’s, perhaps amped up slightly. Unlike Jack however he has confidence issues and mild depression, though he is very good at hiding it. He’s actually quite modest as well, for example, he’s a fairly good singer but would deny it if anyone said so. He shares Jack’s passion for drumming but is also quite good with electric guitar. He gets quite flustered about sexual stuff, especially when it’s directed towards him. Though he strangely doesn’t mind teasing others in a sexual manner. He carries a lot of guilt about what happened in Say Goodbye, and does his best to make up for it. He loves doing cameo’s in Jack’s videos, always getting excited by the fan theories. He absolutely adores anything mint flavored, especially if it has dark chocolate. He likes just about any kind of rock music, including metal. He really likes soft stuff. So if he finds anything soft he can end up stroking whatever it is for a good while. Something about it calms him. Jack actually found him snuggling with a giant Sam plushie once. Kinda likes my Dark but is unsure what to do about his feelings. Especially since he hasn’t been interested in guys before. Not to mention he doesn’t want to weird Jack out since they share a body and Jack is straight. Likes the smell of a wood fire and spiced cider. basically any scent that can be associated with being warm and cozy such as cinnamon and pumpkin spice. Loves the rain, especially thunderstorms. He likes seeing the lightning flash, hear the rumble of thunder and the sound of rain on the roof and windows. And he really likes the feel of the cold water washing over him, he finds it refreshing.
Powers:
Floating. Speaks for itself, sometimes uses this ability to essentially walk on walls and the ceiling (( indoor walls, buildings go too high )). When not walking on walls or ceilings he floats up to 7 feet off the ground at most. He can’t go much higher than that though, otherwise it would be considered flying.
Can make himself look like Jack. Typical power for an Antituber.
Glitches. He can make electronics glitch out and his body will look glitchy sometimes. He can also teleport with his glitching but only by a couple yards at most. Hence how he was able to suddenly appear and then disappear during the Say Goodbye video. He can also use his glitching to elicit pretty unique sounds electric musical instruments as well as just about anything electrical, hence the odd screeching noises and stuff that are sometimes heard when he’s in a video.
Healing. Any injuries he gets heal rather fast, though scars are left if the injury is bad enough. This ability kinda leaks out onto Jack as well, but not enough to raise suspicion.
Fast. He’s pretty speedy and agile, might not technically be a power though since he’s only a short ways past the scale of how fast and agile a human can be. Just enough that you know he’s not human but nothing like the Flash. The best comparison i can think of would be a cat. He’s as fast and agile as a cat.
Screaming. He has this loud scream that leaves people disoriented. He doesn’t really have control of it though, it’s more of a defense mechanism that kicks in when he’s scared or in danger.
The Sight. If Anti is looking at a person or creature with just his green eye and they have an alternate and/or ‘true’ form, he is able to see it due to some of his power leaking through that eye. This is probably the only power my Anti has that no other Anti has had. He has to be careful however, if he looks at a really powerful creature’s alternate form for too long a black liquid will start to leak from his eye and he’ll become dizzy and potentially faint. Due to this ability Dark called Anti a ‘Seer’ which are people who have the ability to see things normal people cannot. If this Anti were to ever meet with other Anti’s I imagine Seer would be his nickname.
The last ability he has is that he is able to temporarily separate from Jack for a few hours, creating a body out of particles in the air that go back to their original state once he returns to Jack’s mind. He can only stay out for a few hours because he is a piece of Jack’s soul and being separated too long will make him ill and can even kill him.
Felt like talking about my Anti. I’ll probably do the same for my Dark soon.
Lucid dreams?
This happened not too long ago maybe 2 yrs ago. Let’s start at the beginning, my family is not religious or skeptical of the paranormal but we love watching scary movies it was a family thing on weekend. Our dad when to jail 3 yrs during 2 1/2yrs at my house we moved into our grandma trailer bc house was Evicted and grandma offered for us to stay there for a while.
Anyways we had to share a room oh their 6 kids including me. Mom and dad got there own room. How are room is set up was when you open the door one bunk bed was their on the left wall which me and N (12yrs old) had together. Me (13yrs old) on bottom, her on top. Look over 90 degrees right their another bunk bed which my younger brothers (Y 6 & D 8 yrs old) shared sleep on the same bed, M (11 yrs old) sleep on top and older brother ( K 16 yrs old) sleep in the closest.
Anyways it’s started at less after 1 1/2 yrs living there. My dad came back and we still living their. So it was a school night everyone sound sleep so I thought until I hear M crying and banging on the wall calling for my parents to come which our parents literally right next to our room come rushing in and Im laying their like bitch stfu. Dad came in there asking what’s wrong she said something about momo which back then i had no idea what momo was but we all sleep in our parents room even our older brother. Tbh I thought she was making it up so it didn’t bother me much. But still sleep in parents room bc I seen too many horror movies for that. Anyways I said before I wasn’t bother by it in till she told me details. But it was kinda different from momo description she said that she saw the head shadow which she thought it was K on the floor trying to scary the younger brothers bc the way she described it head was round, and it shadow was illuminating on where me and N was sleeping but on the wall but it I was by the younger brothers bed, oh we have a night light by their bed that was causing the shadow and the all of a sudden it ran out the door which she started crying and banging on the door getting our parents. After that nothing happening after 2-3 months, It blowed over. Until Y start crying saying something thing which I got up and turned on the light bc I thought he had to go to the bathroom and he was scared to get up bc it was dark and we got rid of the night light by the way, but when I turn the light on and told him to “go to the bathroom”, he said “she coming to get me” which I was confused which I’m half sleep and I said “go to the bathroom” and that’s when N said he saying “she coming to get him” and which I responded “who she” and look over at him which he woke up everyone in the room bc the light was on and he left and sleep with my parents. We heard him say she was right next to him looking at me and D. And I turned the light off without second thought bc I was too tired to care and fell asleep.
Then it happened I was sleep on my left side and tingling on my left then I told myself not to open bc I can feel something there but my eyes open and I saw it but my brother when he said he saw it crouching over looking at D sleeping and not even a second later it face glitch on the back of it head I don’t know how to describe it but it was still looking forward at D but I saw it horrible face an open slit frowning at me on the back of its head in an instant I shut my eyes. Can’t move to shock to reopen it the I hear it crawling fast toward me. My voice caught in my throat, screaming in my head then suddenly l yelled “back tf away” out loud then that gave me something type of courage to continue “this is my house bitch you need to leave now” happy I don’t have restrictions on my voice, after that my body was able to move which I immediately pull the blanket in front my face not wanting to open my eyes again. After want feels like eternity I look the got up and turn the light. I thought it was just a lucid dream. which my sisters was awake asking why I was screaming in my sleep which I was thinking you know want I’m sleeping in my parents room tonight gathering my stuff and lefted which my sisters and brothers follows. My older bro was in my parents room already. And I feel asleep on the floor like the other but my younger sleep in bed with my parents.
Next day I told my parents and sisters not brothers but they didn’t believe me so I just forgot about it. And when I went to school I told my friend the story she said that it’s so creepy.
The day went by, like regular and then bed time I went to sleep nothing happened but the tingling feeling was back so I throw the blanket over my head closing my eyes shut not wanting it to happen again and fell asleep. Woke up with no blanket on me. “It must fell off” I told myself thinking of how I use to do this when it got to hot. Went to school and my friend told me about her dream last night and how she saw the thing too I got shivers bc she said “I was there getting dragged out of the room by it into the dark abyss”, remembering my blanket was on the floor. “Just a Coincidence” I repeated to myself.
We stay their until February 2, 2019 we found a new house and left but at that house I would always get tingling feeling sometimes here too. But now I sleep well nothing happens anymore but I still love hearing , and watching scary movie and anything scary l love the thrills of my heart beating fast and I know we to stop when it get to scary for me which rarely.
Recommend me something scary for me pls😶
Chapter 2: From Under the Bed
[This is a chapter of my Harry Potter fanfic written back in 2007 just prior to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. Chapter 1, along with a general explanation of context, is here.]
“Just when I thought you couldn’t get any thinner, you out-thin yourself,” groused Mrs. Weasley as she put platters on the table in the Burrow. “I want you to eat no fewer than three helpings of this meatloaf, and no excuses!”
“They’re better than Hagrid’s rock cakes any day, Mrs. Weasley,” said Harry happily. “Are the rest of the family here?”
There were eight simultaneous cracks, and Harry blinked as Arthur, Bill, Charlie, Fred, George, and Ron Weasley, along with Fleur Delacour and Hermione Granger, appeared in front of him, almost knocking him over in his chair.
“Yes, I would say that we are all here,” said Fred lightly, “that is, all but a certain piece of dung who still hasn’t apologized to certain other people about not believing that a certain Personage-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has returned.”
“As well as another certain female person who seems to already be making deliberate efforts to avoid you,” added George.
Harry sighed and looked at the ground. Suddenly, he wanted desperately to change the subject. “So, any news of what Voldemort’s up to now?” he said, attempting a lighthearted tone of voice and ignoring seven simultaneous flinches aimed in his direction.
“The usual. Still killing. Still maiming and torturing. Still trying to recruit more people to his side. Still wreaking chaos and havoc in every direction,” sighed Mr. Weasley. “We’re doing our best in the Order. Working every day against him, even on weekends and after hours, except we’ll be taking this Saturday off for Bill and Fleur’s wedding. Then it’ll be back to fighting the Death Eaters as usual. And that’s enough to be getting on with, without the Deathly Hallows clamoring for attention all the time.”
Harry had no idea what Deathly Hallows were, but didn’t have the energy to ask.
“We don’t even have Dumbledore’s quirky jokes to keep us happy anymore now,” said Charlie sadly. “Or his terrifying anger to keep us in line. We’re on our own.”
“Speaking of Dumbledore, I just got the news from Scrimgeour that Hogwarts will be reopening after all,” said Mr. Weasley. “We’re just going to have even stronger security. I’m not allowed to give the details, though.”
Harry noticed a new clock on the wall. There was one hand for each Weasley, and only two phrases written around the edge: “In Moderate Mortal Danger” and “In Danger of Dying a Particularly Painful Death in the Imminent Future”. Harry was glad to see that all nine hands were pointing at “In Moderate Mortal Danger”.
“Observing our newest possession, are you?” said Mrs. Weasley grimly, gesturing towards the clock. “Yes, I thought it might come in useful, and the old one was getting rather boring, with everyone’s hand always pointing to the ‘Mortal Danger’ spot. This new one was sold to me on the street by a woman by the name of Trelawney. She said she had built it herself to perfect accuracy.”
Harry suddenly felt a lot less reassured.
After dinner, Harry went up to Ron’s room with Ron and Hermione. On his way up the stairs, Harry could see Ginny’s eyes peering out of her bedroom door, which was open a crack, before she quickly closed it. Harry sighed, pulled himself together and continued on his way up the stairs. At least this wasn’t as bad as it had been to watch her snogging Dean Thomas.
“So Hogwarts is staying open after all,” said Harry to his two friends. “I wonder who the headmaster will be now.”
“Have you considered the possibility that Dumbledore might not really be dead?” said Hermione musingly. “He might be coming back to Hogwarts, you know.”
“That’s not a nice thing to joke about,” said Harry quietly.
“I’m not joking!” said Hermione shrilly. “I’m not convinced that he really died! The evidence isn’t exactly watertight!”
“Not exactly watertight?” repeated Harry incredulously. “What d’you mean? In case you’ve forgotten, I saw him blasted off the astronomy tower by Snape’s Avada Kedavra curse! I saw his dead body! He’s dead! There’s no denying it. No getting around it. Dumbledore is no more*. Snape murdered him!”
“Actually, we don’t know that for sure,” said Hermione evenly. “We still don’t actually have proof that Snape isn’t on our side.”
“Oh, you’re not still saying that, are you?” snorted Ron. “The one issue between us where I got the privilege of turning out to be right, and you won’t admit it?”
“Come on, have some imagination,” said Hermione, although soothingly, squeezing Ron’s hand. She glanced at Harry and let go with a start. “Snape and Dumbledore could have been putting on a show for the Death Eaters to help Snape keep his cover and give Voldemort a false sense of confidence about Dumbledore supposedly being dead. Snape and Dumbledore probably planned it all out beforehand. Or maybe when Dumbledore said, ‘Severus… please…,’ he really meant to please kill him. You never know. Dumbledore always trusted Snape, remember? D’you think he really could have made such a misjudgment?”
“I think you’re barking,” said Ron. Harry nodded his head in agreement.
“I’m serious!” retorted Hermione. “I don’t know how it could have worked, but I’m sure that Dumbledore couldn’t have really died that easily. And I’m sure that Snape isn’t really evil. He just can’t be! Not if I have anything to say about it!”
“Whatever,” said Ron, rolling his eyes. He was still subconsciously stroking the hand that Hermione had squeezed as though he never wanted to wash it again. Harry pretended not to notice.
“Anyway,” said Harry, “either way, we still need a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. And then there’s the factor of how unwilling most of the parents will be about sending their kids back to Hogwarts.”
“How could the seventh years’ parents be so unwilling?” gasped Hermione. “This year is our N.E.W.T. year. That’s extremely important! It could affect our entire futures!”
“Honestly, Hermione, you’re way too obsessed with academics,” said Ron lazily. “Anyway, I suppose if my parents give permission, we’ll go without you, Harry?”
“Why do you say that?” said Harry sharply.
“Well,” said Hermione tentatively, “you did say something at Dumbledore’s funeral about not coming back next year, didn’t you?”
Harry sighed and gave a small smile. “Oh, you know I never really mean things like that. I just have trouble controlling my emotions sometimes, and I say stuff. Of course I’m coming back. How am I supposed to be able to keep my mind on destroying the Horcruxes and Voldemort himself – oh, stop spasming uncontrollably like that, Ron, it really disturbs me – if I’m weighed down with homesickness for Hogwarts?”
“We hoped you’d see that logic properly, Harry,” said Hermione in relief. “It really is quite obvious, you know.”
“Right now we should put our efforts into living with Bill and Fleur until their wedding,” said Ron. “And it would help if we don’t get any Death Eater attacks during that time, either.”
“He’s worked out a way of making himself immune to Phlegm’s presence,” said Hermione, smiling wryly and jerking her thumb towards Ron. “It’s one of those mind control things…”
“Have you made any progress on R.A.B.?” Harry asked Hermione now.
“No,” she said sadly. “I decided to stop thinking about it for a while and let the answer come to me. Wait a minute…” She suddenly looked transported. “I think I just figured it out!”
“Tell us!” said Harry and Ron together.
Hermione seemed far away. “I… no, but… no, that would make sense… except that… but maybe…”
“Have I told you how much I hate it when you do this?” said Ron grumpily.
“I’ve got to go to the library,” said Hermione abruptly.
“There is no library here,” Harry reminded her.
“Oh, yeah, I forgot about that,” said Hermione. “All right then… how about Regulus Black?”
There was a thirty-second silence while Harry and Ron thought this out. Then…
“It never occurred to me,” said Ron dully.
“How could it not have?” said Hermione to Ron in a superior voice. “He was your own best friend’s father’s best friend’s brother, after all.”
“I bet you think we’re really stupid, do you?” snarled Ron.
“Yeah,” said Harry. “How could we have been expected to remember about Sirius’ Death Eater brother out of the blue like that?”
“Harry should have been taking notes while Sirius lectured him on his family tree the summer before last and then studied them with Ron,” said Hermione severely, and she left the room to let Harry and Ron stew in their own indignation.
The wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour was by and large a successful event, although not without its glitches. During the whole ceremony, while staring at Fleur, Ron’s face appeared to be screwed up in concentration, and when Bill and Fleur were pronounced man and wife, he tried to clumsily hide from Hermione the fact that he was woefully wiping his eyes on his father’s handkerchief. Meanwhile, Charlie, the twins, Ginny (who was looking anywhere but at Harry), and Hermione were all struggling to stifle involuntary gagging noises. Nymphadora Tonks distracted and offended everybody with her bright, blue hair in the Mohawk style, and Mundungus Fletcher was busy the entire time examining the jewelry that had been given as wedding presents. After the ceremony, the party found that the cake was virtually inedible after Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody had checked it for 138 different kinds of poisons and jinxes. The festivities went on late into the night. When Mrs. Weasley and Mundungus Fletcher got into a verbal cut-down argument about what kind of incompetently concocted potion the other had been dropped into as a baby, it was unanimously decided that it was time for everybody to go to bed.
Two days later, four owls arrived, one each for Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny. They were each letters from Professor McGonogall which included the school lists for Hogwarts.
“Still no mention of who the next headmaster or headmistress will be,” remarked Harry, who was sitting on Ron’s bed with Ron and Hermione.
“It says something about something called ‘Deathly Hallows’ though,” said Ron. “What d’you reckon those are?”
“No idea,” said Harry. “Your dad mentioned something about them the other day.”
“You know, maybe we’ll be better off without Dumbledore this year,” said Ron thoughtfully. “I used to think of him as a genius who was also insane, and now I just think of him as insane. I mean, honestly.” He put on a croaky, sing-song voice. “‘I trust Severus Snape! I trust Severus Snape! I trust Severus Snape!’”
Just then, all three froze, staring at the foot of the bed. A shriveled, blackened hand was reaching out from under it. Hermione clutched Ron’s arm in horror and then seemed to decide to clutch Harry’s as well, just to be fair. And then a deep voice said, “Not a bad impression, although you might want to work on the syllabic intonation a little.”
And as the long, thin, wizened form of Albus Dumbledore began to drag itself out from underneath the bed, Hermione gave Harry and Ron a significant look which clearly said, “Told you so.”
* I’m pretty sure I was trying to allude to Monty Python’s “dead parrot” sketch here and wish I’d remembered the lines well enough to add something like “He has ceased to be. He is an ex-Dumbledore”, etc.
