Butterflies! Kate Is Alive AU Part Two!
Butterflies!
Riley sat there, rather stunned. Despite everything Kate knew, it did not do more than confirm what Riley had already suspected. The information was interesting, for sure, but it didnât lead them any closer to their goal. Then again, if it would then Kate wouldnât have given up. I suppose. Riley thought to themself.
âLook, there are some tapes scattered around this room if you want to watch themâŚâ Kate sighed.
âAre you going to stick around to watch them with me?âÂ
âNo⌠Iâve already watched them all⌠over and over⌠you know that, I gave you my notes. But I suppose two eyes are better than one. Let me know if you catch something I guessâŚâ she turned to leave. Riley had never heard her sound so drained before. âWait! Amanda has been talking about you! She says she misses you, and wants to talk to you again! Please, just this once, will you watch a tape with me?âÂ
âFine. But afterwards I really do have to go.â She pulled a tape out of a bug catching net and handed it to Riley, who put it in the VCR.Â
The tape begins with Amanda coming out of a store, silently staring at an at-home butterfly habitat for kids. She seems content. There are little caterpillars crawling around inside.
âDonât worry little guys⌠youâre safe. Iâm going to take care of youâŚâ She says gently in a soft, caring tone. The tape changes to Amandaâs living room, where she carefully carries the habitat into the room and places it on the couch. Wooly is already there.
âWhatcha got there Amanda?â he asks.Â
âFor todayâs episode, weâre raising butterflies, remember?âÂ
âI think we did that in elementary school a long time agoâŚâ Wooly remincises, âIt was fun! Until all the butterflies⌠died for some reason. HmmâŚâ
âWell there is absolutely no way these ones are dying on my watch!â Amanda announces. She realizes that the episode has started already. âOh, hi there! Didnât notice you for a second, sorry. Iâm Amanda!â she beams. There is an awkward pause, like Amanda is waiting for something, but Wooly seems to be staring into the distance, deep in thought. âIâm Amanda.â she repeats, but gets no response. âWhatever.â She scoffs and looks around for somewhere to put the habitat. She sees the lamp on the table and a devilish grin forms on her face.Â
âGee, I wish we had a TABLE to put this habitat on!â she says, looking at the screen smugly. Riley taps on the lamp. She grins mischievously, and walks over to the lamp. She shoves it off the table causing it to break and make a super loud crashing sound on the floor.
âHuh?! What are you doing?!â Wooly gasps. âYouâre going to scare the caterpillars!â Amanda panics and looks at her caterpillars.Â
âShh⌠shh⌠itâs okay little fellas youâre absolutely safe here.â Amanda says softly. Wooly rolls his eyes, then he glances at the screen. He seems surprised, then a little annoyed.Â
âOh⌠the episode has started already?âÂ
âYeah Wooly.â Amanda scoffs. She looks at the screen again and does a double take. Her eyes widen and tears start to form âNo⌠no way⌠it canât beâŚâ her voice cracks, âKa-âÂ
âDonât say my name! Theyâll hear you!â Kate snaps. Amanda flinches a bit, Riley does too. It is very unlike Kate to speak in such a harsh tone. She seems⌠scared.Â
âYouâre aliveâŚâ Amanda cries, âI canât believe youâre alive.âÂ
âYeah Amanda⌠Iâm aliveâŚâ Kate sighed, sounding completely exhausted. Amandaâs smile fades a bit.Â
âToday weâre raising caterpillars into butterflies! These ones are called Monarchs!â Amanda beams, âOh⌠but I guess you already know that huh? Heh heh.â She laughs nervously.Â
âSay, why donât you help us!â Wooly suggests. Â
âYeah! SeeâŚâ Amanda pulls out a diagram, âButterflies start out as eggs⌠then they become caterpillars⌠then they turn into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly!âÂ
âOoh! Ooh! What do they turn into after that?â Wooly asks eagerly. Amanda gives him a weird look, as this is a very strange question.Â
âThey die, Wooly. You know that.âÂ
âO-Oh⌠thatâs⌠really sad.âÂ
âNot really, thatâs just the cycle of life isnât it? Honestly I think theyâre kind of lucky, they get to fly south for the winter. I bet they see all kinds of different places.âÂ
âMmm⌠I donât know⌠I feel like there could be dangers along the way. I mean, not every butterfly makes it right?â Wooly says. Amanda ignores him.
âWe have to help these caterpillars grow into butterflies! Do you remember the cycle I showed you before?â She asks. âI'll start us off, the eggs have already hatched into caterpillars, so what comes next?â A voice prompt shows up on the screen.Â
âShoe.â Riley replied. Amanda giggles a little bit.
âWhat the?â Wooly mumbles looking completely confused. âThat's not right.â
âYeah I know Wooly.â Amanda grumbles. âCome on, try again.â the voice prompt appears again.
âGrasshopper.â Riley said with a mischievous grin. Amanda looks kind of mad now.Â
âCome on, didn't you learn this in grade school?!â Amanda snaps.
âMaybe they failed grade schoolâŚâ Wooly comments. Wow Wooly, rude. Kate paused the tape.
âRiley what are you doing?!â She hissed.
âPissing them off on purpose.â Riley shrugged.Â
âWhy?!â
âDunno, they reveal more information when you do that I guess.â
âReallyâŚâ Kate sounded intrigued. She walked over and unpaused the tv.Â
âAlright.â Amanda takes a deep breath, âlet's try this again. After the egg hatches into the caterpillar, what happens?â the voice prompt appears once more.
âFrog.â Kate answered. Riley started cracking up. Amanda's jaw drops.Â
âRiley! You are SUCH a bad influence!â Wooly groans in frustration. Now everyone is staring at him with surprise. âWh-whoa⌠what'd I do?â
âI've never heard Wooly⌠ever refer to a viewer by name before.â Kate mumbled, tapping her chin with interest.Â
âMe neither.â Riley said.
âWooly⌠you just called Riley by their name.â Amanda points out. He immediately covers his mouth, looking incredibly freaked out for some reason. âFrog⌠Grasshopper⌠SHOE what kind of answers even ARE those?!â Amanda shouts in annoyance, âThe answer is-â
âChrysalis!â Wooly shouts out suddenly.Â
âThat's right. Chrysalis.â Amanda says, unenthusiastically. The caterpillars crawl up and begin to weave their chrysalises.Â
âHa! Yessss!â Wooly appears quite proud of himself. Amanda rolls her eyes.Â
âAlright and out form the chrysalis emerges aâŚâ the voice prompt appears again.Â
âDragonfly!â Riley calls out. This time Amanda is not amused.
âDo you think this is funny?â Amanda says, her right eye twitching a bit.Â
âYou seemed to think it was before.â Wooly points out.
âIt's not funny anymore! It hasn't been for a long time!â she shouts, stamping her foot. Red glitches cover the screen. âI'm so sick of all of this!â
âAmanda, don't say that!â Wooly says worriedly looking at the screen.
âDON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!â Amanda screams in his face, Wooly puts his hands up defensively, âI hate this place! I hate you!â Wooly suddenly looks very hurt. The tape glitches red again. Amanda starts to morph into her demon form. Wooly backs away slowly. This time it feels a lot more eerie. Like Amanda is completely in control, she almost seems calm. Too calm. âWhat are you so afraid of, huh?!â She says calmly, almost too calmly. Â
âI- um⌠I⌠IâŚWhoa!â Wooly trips onto his butt and freezes up. âI'm no-not afraid!â he says defensively, Amanda looms over him. âYo-you don't know anything!â tears start welling up in his eyes. Amanda looks disappointed, she returns back to normal and turns back to the screen with a fake smile on her face.Â
âWhen the caterpillar emerges from the chrysalis what does it become?â She asks with an eerie cheerfulness. The voice prompt appears once more.Â
âButterfly.â Kate said quickly. There is a long pause before Amanda says anything. She just stares at them for a long time with a creepy smile.Â
âAmanda?â Wooly mumbles.
âThat's right!â She beams, âA butterfly!â The tape glitches and they hear the brief sound of Amanda screaming but it's glitched out. She returns to a smiling state once again. Wooly looks seriously disturbed.Â
âAmanda, are you feeling okay?â
âNever--- better Wooly, why?â Amanda smiles. Wooly looks unconvinced. The tape glitches again, Wooly looks startled.
âThat's right!â Amanda beams, âA butterfly!â Just then, the butterflies all came out of their chrysalises. âLook! Our butterflies are all grown up now!âÂ
âOooooh⌠they're so pretty.â Wooly grins, he leans on the couch's arm, watching them happily. Amanda sits on the floor and watches them as well.
âNow that they're all grown up, we get to do my favorite part!â Amanda says excitedly.Â
âHm? And what's that?â Wooly asks, also getting a little excited. Amanda picks up the habitat. The tape glitches and suddenly they are in the backyard. Now Wooly looks nervous. âSo⌠what are we doing Amanda?âÂ
âLetting them go!â Amanda cheers.Â
âWhat?! NO!!!â Wooly shouts, the tape glitches. He snatches the habitat from her and hugs it protectively. âThese are our friends! We didn't even get to have them that long!âÂ
âBut they deserve to be free!â Amanda argues. Wooly looks like he's about to argue back but then the tape glitches. He looks down at the habitat sadly. The sparkle in his eyes goes dim.Â
âI⌠guess you're rightâŚâ he sighs, handing the habitat gently to Amanda, who looks at him with confusion and a bit of concern. Just then, the opossum shows up.Â
âOh um, hi there opossum!â Amanda says awkwardly. âLook at these butterflies we raised, pretty right?â The opossum runs up to her and starts trying to grab at the habitat. âWha? No! You can't have this!â She snaps, pulling it away from him. He snatches it from her.Â
âHe's gonna hurt the butterflies! Do something!â Wooly shouts.
âWhat do we do?â Kate asked. Riley taps their finger on the VCR screen. The opossum clearly notices them, he stops for a moment, then glares at Riley directly in the eye and drops the habitat on the ground.
âNo!â Amanda and Wooly shout. They wait a moment, the opossum does nothing.
âWait⌠they look⌠fineâŚâ Amanda says, sounding relieved.Â
âNow we just need to carefully take them back inside where theyâre safeâŚâ Wooly whispers. The opossum glares at them and opens the door to the habitat. All the butterflies fly out of it. Â
âNo! No! NO! Come back!â Wooly cries out, trying to reach for them, but Amanda watches in awe.
âIsn't it beautiful?â Amanda smiles.Â
âBeautiful?!â Wooly says angrily, âth-theyâre gone! We lost them!â
âWooly⌠they canât stay with us foreverâŚâ Amanda says gently. Wooly looks at her sadly.Â
âI knowâŚâ Wooly sighs sadly, flopping down onto the grass, âBut I'm going to miss them.â
âMe tooâŚâ
âBut you wanted to let them go!âÂ
âI wanted to set them free.â Amanda explains, âLook at them, theyâre right where they belong. Arenât you happy for them?âÂ
âThey would've been safer with usâŚâ Wooly grumbles.Â
âBut now theyâre happy⌠now theyâre free.â Amanda says longingly, âI wish I was a butterfly.âÂ
âWhyâs that?â Wooly asks.Â
âSo I can fly far far away.â Amanda stretches her arms out, feeling the sunshine and the breeze. Her eyes seem to sparkle. She lays down in the grass and watches the butterflies fly around above her.Â
âButterflies donât live that long, you know.â Wooly pouts. Amanda rolls her eyes.Â
âBetter a short and happy life than a long and miserable one.â She grumbles.
âYou think so?â
âYeahâŚâ Amanda sighs, sounding a bit more at peace. Wooly stares at her for a bit, looking like he wants to say something. Then he looks away and stands up.Â
âThere are other kinds of butterflies right? Don't you have any books on them?â Wooly asks.Â
âMmm yeah I think so.â Amanda replies nonchalantly, without even glancing up at him.Â
âDon't moths also come from caterpillars?â
âSure they do⌠why?â Amanda answers, looking suspicious of Wooly.Â
âJust curious⌠I kinda forgot⌠it's uh⌠been awhileâŚâ Wooly laughs sadly. Amanda looks sad for a moment then shakes it off.
âAN-Y-WAY!â She shouts jumping up off the lawn, âThat's how caterpillars become butterflies!â The credit music begins to play. âWAIT- WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!!â Amanda calls out frantically. âBefore you go I- I need to ask you something. K-" she freezes, remembering Kate's words from before. âFr-friendâŚâ she says awkwardly, âAre you bored of me?â The voice prompt appears.Â
âNO!! NEVER!â Kate shouted. Amanda's eyes widen.Â
âBut⌠you left⌠and you started making other people watch the tapes for you⌠I mean don't get me wrong I like them both but⌠I missed youâŚâ Amanda whimpers. âI missed talking to you⌠and I finally remembered who you were but you disappeared and I had so much I wanted to talk to you aboutâŚâ Amanda cries softly. The voice prompt hasnât disappeared yet.Â
âWell⌠we can talk now.â Kate says softly.Â
âOkay⌠um⌠Di-did you get the cookies? Did you like them?âÂ
âCookies? What cookies?â Kate asks Riley, sounding extremely confused.
âWe⌠got you some cookies⌠and sent them to you.â
âOh⌠I'm sorry I never got any cookies⌠but I wasn't home so I wouldn't know.âÂ
âI seeâŚâ Amanda says sadly.Â
âUm⌠well it's good to see you're back and okay!â Wooly says nervously. Amanda looks surprised at this.
âYou didn't like K- herâŚâ Amanda points out.Â
âWell unlike a certain someone I know I don't wish the people I don't like would DIE.â
âWell maybe you should, Wooly.â Amanda mumbles. âMaybe we should want them deadâŚâ wait⌠she's not talking about us. Who is she referring to? Probably the people at Hameln, right? Riley theorised.
âLook if this is about Hameln I'm sure they had a good reason-â
âGood reason?! Are you out of your MIND?!â Amanda snaps. Wooly falls silent. âYou don't really still believe that nonsense do you?!â
âI don't knowâŚâ Wooly pouts. Amanda shakes her head with an annoyed expression.
âIâm not completely sure what's going on but⌠don't be a stranger⌠okay Kate?â Amanda smiles sadly. The tape ended and fell out of the machine. Kate slowly begins to break down in tears.Â
âI'm sorry Rebecca⌠I'm sorry⌠I can't save you⌠I know I can't save youâŚâ Kate sobbed.
âWhat do you mean, save?â Riley questions.
âI mean⌠getting her out⌠bringing her backâŚâÂ
âI don't think we can do that⌠but⌠I think we can set her free⌠her and all the kidsâŚâ Riley explained. âI mean⌠she will never be able to return to how she was⌠but I think she would rather be free than trapped in these tapes like thisâŚâ
âI can't do it⌠I can't let her go⌠I promised Sam⌠I promisedâŚâÂ
âSam would want her to be at peace tooâŚâ Riley sighed.
âI know⌠I knowâŚâÂ
âSo will you help me? Can we stop Hameln? Together?â
âYou don't know what you're up against!â Kate argued.Â
âMaybeâŚâ Riley mumbled, âBut I want to try!â Just then there is a knock on the door.
âKate⌠it's me.â an unfamiliar voice says. Kate immediately stands up and opens the door.Â
âWait here, I'll introduce you⌠in a bit. You can handle the puzzle till then right?â She asked. Riley looked behind them. A children's butterfly puzzle is now on the table. They looked back at Kate and nodded. Kate nodded back and left. Riley heard some muffled conversation on the other side of the door. They looked at the puzzle. The pieces are gone. They looked around the room and found a piece with butterfly eggs on it. They placed it into the puzzle. Maybe I need to rewatch the tape to solve this one. Riley thought.
âYou did WHAT?! Have you LOST your MIND?!â Kate shouted. What's going on? They wondered. Well hopefully she'll fill me in later. They take the tape and put it back into the VCR.Â
The episode begins with Amanda and Wooly sitting on the couch watching some caterpillars in a butterfly habitat. She notices us.
âOh hi again! I'm Amanda!â She beams. She waits again for Wooly, who is still watching the caterpillars, kicking his feet in the air happily. âHe's in his own little world, huh?â Amanda grumbles. She elbows him sharply in the arm.Â
âOw! What is it?!â Wooly snaps, sounding really annoyed then he notices us..âOh⌠um⌠and I'm Wooly!â
âSo she isn't here this time?â Amanda questions. The voice prompt appears.
âShe's talking to someone outside.â
âOh, probably our other friend!â Amanda smiles. âToday we're raising caterpillars!âÂ
âSay, why donât you help us?â Wooly points out. Amanda pulls out the diagram, she looks at it for a bit with disinterest. âAmanda?âÂ
âYou remember the life cycle right?â she asks. The voice prompt appears.
âYeah.â Riley replied.Â
âAnd youâre not going to mess with us again right?âÂ
âMaybe.â Riley shrugged. Amanda and Wooly look annoyed. âOkay fine, I wonât.â Gotta speedrun this anyway.
âIâll start us off⌠the eggs have already turned into caterpillars, so what comes next?â
âChrysalis.â
âCorrect!â Amanda grins, snapping her fingers. The caterpillars crawl up and start to form their chrysalises. Riley paused the tape and looked around for the chrysalis piece. Once they found it, they put it in the puzzle. They turn back to the TV and find the chrysalises fully-formed much faster than before. They walked back to the TV and hit play.Â
âWhoooaaaâŚâ Wooly marvels. Â
âWhen the caterpillar emerges from the chrysalis what does it become?âÂ
âButterfly.â Riley answers.Â
âThatâs right! A butterfly!â she grins. Just then, the butterflies come out of their chrysalises. Riley paused the tape and looked for the butterfly puzzle piece and added it to the puzzle. When they returned to the tv the butterflies had already emerged.Â
âLook! Our butterflies are all grown up now!â Amanda beams. Wooly looks around awkwardly, like he wants to say something. Amanda sits on the couch watching the butterflies happily. âYouâre right Wooly, they are really pretty.â Wooly doesnât come and watch them this time. He looks uncomfortable and unsure, like thereâs something on his mind. âYouâre not going to watch them?â
âWHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!â Wooly shouts, then he panics a bit like he didnât mean to say that.
âWhat are you talking about?â Amanda says, confused and kind of offended.Â
âYOU! You were acting⌠strange earlier!âÂ
âEarlier? What do you mean earlier?â Amanda asks mockingly. Wooly scowls at her.Â
âNevermind.â he sighs, âitâs nothing.â Amanda shrugs.Â
âAre you ready for my favorite part?â Amanda grins.Â
âHow did you do that?âÂ
âDo what?!â Amanda snaps.Â
âLa-last time they watched the tape! You turned into your demon form and nothing bad happened!âÂ
âYeah so?âÂ
âWhat do you mean yeah, so?!â Wooly shouts. âNo no⌠thatâs not what I meant to ask atl all⌠ugh forget it!âÂ
âReally? Because it seems like you have something to sayâŚâ
âI uh⌠um⌠hmmâŚ.â Wooly thinks really hard for a couple seconds, âuuuuh ugh⌠no⌠I⌠mmm⌠You-â his voice gets really quiet⌠he sounds almost⌠small all of the sudden, âYou donât really hate me do you?âÂ
âWhat was that?â Amanda asks, looking confused. She didnât hear him.
âNothing. I forgot.âÂ
âOkay then⌠So can we let the butterflies go now?â âFine. Letâs just get this over with.â he groans. The tape fast-forwards on its own and ends. That was weird. Riley thought. They turn around and the next tape is behind them.
Authors Note: Experimenting with some new fic stuff to make it feel more like the games! Also did a lot more research this time to keep everything in character. Obviously though, this is a direct continuation of the second game... and I don't know what will happen then. So some stuff is kind of just made up on the fly. I have no idea if Amanda is actually able to control her demon form or not, but I thought it was a cool idea so I tried it.
Constructive criticism is totally welcome btw, if I didn't say so before! I'm writing fics to improve my writing skills, so seriously, any feedback is welcome (as long as it's not like... straight up rude. If you say "this sucks" with no elaboration that's not constructive criticism).

(i also see smithers as transfem, i use she/he interchangeably due to my headcanons on how gender feels for her. hope u don't mind đ)
i don't have time to respond to all of your individual points, but i will say a bit.
"just because it doesn't revolve around your ship." firstly, please don't condescend to me like that. yes, i enjoy burnsmithers, but that's not really the point i was making here. anyone who knows me personally will know that i don't care that much about canon/canon ships. even with burns and smithers, i don't actually think about them getting together very often. i like it, but i don't need it. my attention towards the ship comes more from the fact that i like both of them a lot individually, so it's convenient to have them in a little package like that. (and i like seeing smithers win.)
i am glad that you are able to personally enjoy and accept the characterization of smithers in more recent material, i truly am. having so much content of a character you love is very lucky.
i'm incredibly picky, though, and i don't think all of the changes in her personality can be reduced to 'character development.' she was written by people, writers who make decisions and have thoughts and change things based on their experiences and biases.
just because the writers may be trying to give their characters 'happy endings' as you put it doesn't mean i'm going to like their creative decisions. it's the simpsons, it's so highly episodic, and even moments that were advertised as big changes in the status quo were eventually abandoned. the writers do not like having to see big changes through. (cough cough cough the burns cage cough)
their dynamic, at its roots, is based around codependency. that's where it was born. without an understanding of that, they lose a lot of their nuance and depth because of how much they're defined by each other. this may not be true of modern writing, but it is true of the early seasons. i don't mean that they can't exist at all without each other, and i apologize if the way i said this lacked clarity, but what i meant was that their personalities were developed with room for their codependency. even when they aren't near each other, they are still people who are capable of relying on each other. the way their characterization has shifted does not often leave that space in their personalities.
i do not mean they always need to be around each other or thinking about each other. what i mean is that their personalities were created as foils, and they are losing that in the writers' inclination towards projected individualism.
in earlier seasons when they're pictured without each other, i like them just fine. i agree that there is more to them than each other. my critique was not that their characters have no potential, it was aimed at the writers' inability to properly utilize that potential.
they have their moments in modern simpsons, but overall, i think it says a lot that my favorite independent modern smithers appearance was one where she doesn't even talk. (werking mom)
on werking mom, i need to bring up that my complaints about smithers' identity come from ME being gay, transgender, and hell, even a doll collector! i see SO MUCH of myself in smithers. and yet, with modern smithers, i experience a palpable detachment. like suddenly, there's something off.
a lot of that does come from the new way they use smithers' gayness. i like it in earlier seasons because it feels so casual, like it doesn't have to be said for us to know it. it's more human like that. modern simpsons is OBSESSED with saying it. constantly. over and over again. in every scene. and it annoys me because it feels like they forgot that there IS more to smithers than that. smithers' experience with gender and sexuality will always inform her life and interests, but the modern emphasis on that doesn't feel like a nuanced exploration on the influence of lgbt identity on everyday life or something. it feels cheap and performative.
when i say "smithers has been reduced to his gayness," what i mean is that his characterization has become a lot more stereotypical. the fact that her writing has become more shallow makes this noticeable to me because most of her episodes revolve around gayness in some way. even if bottle episode wasn't about her being attracted to men, it was still dependent on gay stereotypicality to make the episode work. even the wine court stuff was tied to her involvement in the lgbt community. part of this comes from the simpsons' inclination to make her nicer- it feels like they see 'gay' as being a positive trait rather than neutral, so they struggle not to see gay people through a positive lens. that's stereotyping, even stereotypes that intend kindness can be condescending if they lack depth. smithers being depicted as better than he was in the past is, at least partially, intrinsically tied to her identity as gay.
lackey is in and of itself an example of this double standard. it's noticeable that nowadays, smithers doing good deeds always feels intrinsically linked to her gay experience rather than her individuality. along with that, it's hard to read as 'character development' because, to me, smithers already feels like a husk at the beginning of the episode. his being a good person is tied to his relationship with michael, how she wants love but won't take it at the expense of others... then keeps working for mr. burns. you relate this to in-universe explanations, but it isn't a real thing that happened. it was a thing that people wrote. along with that, it doesn't feel like a development or change. it feels like an easy thing for the writers to do because it would be annoying to let smithers have a new boyfriend. it would do too much to change the show's overall formula, and it's easier to just make smithers drop him to keep things the same. it doesn't matter if your excuse as to why is incoherent, so long as they've dropped the new player by the end.
when i say, "smithers isn't allowed to be gay for mr. burns" anymore, what i mean is that acknowledgments of that attraction feel half assed and chorelike. the writers do not care about the way smithers likes mr. burns. i stand by what i said. the writers don't want to write burns and smithers being codependent, they want to write AROUND it. as in, i believe they want it to affect their plotlines as little as possible. their lack of chemistry is an important signal at the writers' lack of interest in their relationship. to me at least, it just doesn't feel like the writers understand how or why the two could like each other, and bottle episode really encompasses that frustration for me.
i just don't like the decisions they make for their characters in modern simpsons. you mention flanders' grief, so i'll say i didn't like o c'mon all ye faithful's handling of that, either. it has the same problem as smithers' relationship with michael, it has to do with a fundamental fear of change.
at the beginning of lackey, smithers doesn't have a boyfriend. by the end, smithers doesn't have a boyfriend. at the beginning of faithful, flanders believes in god. by the end, flanders believes in god. any "changes" that occur in the plotline are illusory because these episodes pose no threat to the writers' routine. my complaints are not just me wanting burnsmithers fodder. i think the way they're handling the characters is bland, clunky, and uninventive. any 'innovation' is wholly performative or intended to lampshade a flawed understanding of the characters themselves and why they were entertaining and charming at their inception.
thinking abt bottle episode now -_- i think it's so exhausting to watch burns and smithers in recent seasons because it feels like the writers are trying to write AROUND their codependency? they can acknowledge it exists on paper, but in practice, they fail to anchor their interactions in a logical understanding of it.
like, they had burns pestering smithers for help early in the episode to the point it was a catalyst for the plot, and yet, when smithers is INCARCERATED burns doesn't notice until he's specifically told? it just feels like the writers don't want to engage with how these two need each other to function, not just from the watsonian perspective but doylian as well.
without smithers, burns becomes just an evil old rich man. without burns, smithers kind of just exists??? they are both SO important for contextualizing each other and creating respective depth.
along with that, i think smithers' personality has become way too reliant upon his gayness. in the name of "representation," they've brought it into the forefront of his characterization and, in doing so, dropped most of the shit that actually made him unique in the first place. of course the writers can't see why he would like mr. burns anymore! they just see him as a nondescript spineless gay guy! i believe his writing is way more homophobic than it was in the early years because it feels like being gay is all he has at this point. and yet he's also not allowed to be gay FOR mr. burns. and mr. burns is a pathetic old man, but he's not allowed to need smithers because he has to be one dimensionally evil and capable of performing functional independence.
their newfound lack of chemistry drastically impedes their ability to be enjoyable and entertaining, and i think the writers know that but don't realize it's their own fault. it seems like they don't have fun writing the two as the unit they're supposed to be, so they go to great lengths to mischaracterize them even further just to keep them from interfering with each other's plotlines. i mean god, take thirst trap for example. i'll just post what i said about that one on discord.
[text: they got the "smithers likes mr. burns" thing down and they don't seem to know anything else about them and i'm just staring at them like there is no world where mr. burns marries a random shady woman who is blatantly using him for his money and smithers is just like Yeah she's cool because she likes Mr. Burns too!
No. He would want to kill her and wear her skin]
more than anything i wish that burns and smithers would be allowed the codependency that defined them in the first place. they don't just like each other, they NEED each other, and that fact is supposed to create an obstacle that defines them intrinsically. that's where their writing begins. can we just go perform a simpsons coup d'ĂŠtat
#i know how it can be to just try and get your point across and get lost in infodumping#but i do wish you could have viewed my post as though i was saying it from the perspective of someone who does know these things#and whose opinion has been developed based on the same information as yours

thinking about kipperlilly and faith. about how, clearly, whatever plans they're cooking need a cleric. that she went through three whole clerics just to find one who was willing to reject their faith. about the fact that kipperlilly has had her whole life laid out from birth; easy academic run, parents earning a good salary, no dramas, no deaths, no traumas. About anger bubbling in her, despite all this. Kipperlilly has never needed faith, because she's never been lost before.
And so, when faced with needing a cleric who is willing to reject their divinity and their god, and their faith, she loses time and time again. Because she doesn't UNDERSTAND what faith means. She doesn't understand Kristen, and it kills her. Embracing doubt and not knowing when everything is easier when you know what lies ahead. She can't understand it because, again, she's never needed to believe in anything.
And she meets Buddy, who thinks he has faith, but just has obedience. Who believes because he's told to, and he's the perfect person for her to twist that faith, because when it comes down to it, he's more scared of death than of losing his faith. the perfect person to use.
I wonder if she saw Kristen at the beginning of Junior Year, floundering, rejecting the calls of her own deity, ignoring what Cassandra needs, and thought she would be perfect, only to be completely shut down by the utter faith Kristen has in everything.
#fhjy#fhjy spoilers#i think im going insane about kipperlilly folks#unhinged behaviour coming from me#idk why theres just!!! something about her#ive finally fallen into the you are not immune to adoring a d20 villain trap#something about this episode has really changed up my thoughts on her

there's an essay jumbled up in my brain about dunmeshi's beginning and how clever and deceptive it is as a sleight-of-hand trick that distracts the audience from the depth and scope of the worldbuilding and foreshadowing that's being set up the entire time by dangling zany characters and wacky dishes and biology fun facts in front of us, and how that serves to catch invested viewers off guard when those elements come to the forefront, but also how it works against it with other viewers wanting "more" and not seeing it because the plot bait isn't laid out up front
how people getting frustrated with the characters "not taking things seriously" is mirrored and refuted in the confrontation between Laios and Shuro. how the characters' attitudes aren't just a result of shallow low-stakes "comedy rules" where nothing matters, but are an extension of their personalities (Laios's nonstandard expression of emotions being offputting even to people he knows) and the world and social environment (adventurers being desensitized to death and injury because resurrection magic is commonplace). the way the party refers to "saving Falin" instead of "retrieving Falin's corpse," indicating that they still see her with full personhood, and how that phrasing leads to some readers/viewers believing that Falin is alive in the dragon's stomach, conscious of being slowly digested while the party carelessly fucks around "wasting time." how the weird tonal dissonance makes sense in-universe and yet is deliberately challenged more and more the deeper the party goes
all the character building and pieces of lore slowly weaving together the shape of the larger world, laying the groundwork for the major themes that will surface later. so much is right there in the "low-stakes" early episodes if you know what you're looking for (or pass the perception checks).
it can be so satisfying to see new viewers/readers pick up on the clues even in the earliest "simple" episodes, or notice new things and make connections yourself....and it can also be frustrating to see people dismiss oddities and dissonance as shallow or bad writing because they don't expect a "cooking anime" to have depth like that. why try to question and understand and peel back the layers when you don't expect there to be any layers?
why can't laios take things seriously for once?
#mypost#i'm majorly out of practice for doing any real critical cohesive writing lol#trying to put this into coherent words has been such a mess so here's a vague gesture at my thought process about it#it's both my favorite and the most frustrating thing to see#because i've seen SO MANY people say they dropped the show after a couple eps thinking they know what it's about and where it's going#a cute but ultimately unsustainable gimmick#people for whom the characters and the food/biology infodumping weren't enough of a hook#but i wouldn't change anything about the structure to put a more obvious plot hook in the beginning#because it would give the game away TOO much#i LOVE how the audience has to acclimate to the characters' attitudes about death#only for our assumption that it's all normal and fine in this world to be thrown back in our faces#how we're left to notice the winged lion appearing in statues and carvings and coins and armor in the background#long long before it's ever brought up as a real entity by the plot#the history of the kingdom laid out in plain view but nevermind that. magic painting food!#i've seen the language around falin and her resurrection cause so much confusion#but of COURSE the characters involved wouldn't directly say 'we need to get her corpse to revive it'#bc pragmatically they already understand that as their goal. it doesn't need to be stated out loud; it's just how this process works.#but also they don't SEE her as an object. a dead body.#they need to 'save her before she's digested.' 'the spell couldn't reach her in the dragon's stomach.' 'hang in there falin'#death isn't real to them. not really. and so it doesn't quite feel real to the audience either#not until they find her skull and that realization slams home#like......i keep comparing it to gravity falls#which is episodic and goofy in the beginning but also has a much more obvious plot hook to keep people interested#(a main character entering a secret bunker indicating that he's lying about his ignorance of the town's mysteries)#the main characters in gravity falls are AWARE that there is a mystery to be solved and are trying to find more information#but i don't think that approach would work as well for dm!#laios's goals were never that lofty. not until they HAD to be because the situation demanded it of him#it's the characters trying to solve one personal problem and finding themselves entrenched in something vast and dramatic#that they weren't even fully AWARE of when they set out. and we the audience are on that journey with them!#it's SUCH a good structure i wouldn't trade it for anything. but also. tragic to see people give up and dismiss it so fast.

itâs really sad that i always looked forward to rhaenyra and/or alicent scenes last season but i now feel the urge to fast forward every time one of them comes on screen
- every alicent scene is her looking sad or crying or her with cole but nothing she does adds anything of value to the plot
- we get the same black council scene in which the men are undermining rhaenyra twice per episode and still nothing is done (i do believe she will make some progress in the next episodes but itâs just so boring to watch her have the same scene over and over again)
cersei and dany i miss you both so much
#and there are other characters in the show that are so much more interesting but but donât get the screen time they deserve#and i know that theyâre women and they have to face these struggles for it to be realistic but they did that last season too and they found#a way for it to not be repetitive#but rhaenyra just being so soft and always looking for peace is just so frustrating especially after how season 2 ended up#and obviously sheâs the rightful heir and the better option for the iron throne but oh my god they have made her character so uninteresting#to watch#and i really liked rhaenyra in s1 and i thought she had a lot of potential as a character#in a show where the majority of the characters are supposed to be morally grey (even if done clumsily) she doesnât stand out#and what has become of alicent is worse because sheâs not even doing anything anymore but sheâs still being forced into the story#with random plot lines#i wish they would just let the characters be and give them as much screen time as they need#and i donât want to watch a show about good team vs bad team i wish they have given rhaenyra more complexity#because even though aegon sucks and they made him the worse thing a person can be and unredeemable#i am unfortunately not bored whenever he is onscreen#and i think so far they have established that the targaryens suck so many times even if they do good things every once in a while#aegon sucks viserys sucks aemond sucks dany sucks daemon sucks#all of them to different extents and in different ways ofc#but let my girl rhaenyra suck a little too because she deserves it đŤ#she lost her father her son her daughter her throne let her be a little more like she was in the book#she was not a saint and her character deserves to not be reduced to being a good peaceful queen#hotd negativity#anti hotd#i must also say that i am a casual fan im not here to make analysis of the characters or discuss whether plot lines from the book should#have been changed#im not watching the show critically and this is just something i have noticed and has bothered me every time a new episode drops

#told my roommate ive been depressed this weekend and she kindly offered to watch a movie but i knew shed be too tired and need to cancel#bc of the clocks changing and its ok i know how tired she gets i was the one to suggest it was okay if she cant + it was still a nice idea#but now im alone for the evening again ive been alone all weekend and weekends are the hardest for me and i thought i was feeling a little#better but im not and theres nothing to stop me from harming which is okay i keep it safe and its always a choice i make to do it or not#not anyone elses responsibility but i didnt want.to be alone tonight thats all. and offering something she knows she cant fulfil makes me#feel rejected too and i also wanted to talk abt some of her behaviour that upsets me sometimes but gently bc i dont want it to seem like#im blaming her bc its not her fault im so bad at communicating and neurotic and weird abt shit that doesnt even make sense#but its been bothering me for a really long time and it comes up again every time we meet with other people and i get really upset over it#and im the one that keeps putting off talking about it but its so hard when its been gping on so long and i find it so hard to express#anything and communicate especiallt when its shit like this but im so so so so tired of sitting on it i just want it resolved one way or#another and now i wont see her for a few days bc of this family trip and itll be on my mind the whole time and the thought is making me#feel insane already ive wasted so many hours and hours being upset by her and not being able to talk abt it i need it to stop its not even#that big a deal.it just is to me. and i dont know how to say anythign ever#and she wants to make plans with friends next weekend which feels like hoisting an anvil above my head bc if i dont go i risk having a#rejection sensitive episode bc im vulnerable rn and this is exactly what happened over the summer and it took me months to recover from but#if i do go ill get upset bc ill feel unwanted there and ill be dealing with the same issue that comes up every fucking time and either way#ill end up harming in response to it bc i cant handle how intense my emotions are and i dont have any better outlets right now#for these specific feelings and i dont want to do that i want to be a normal fucking human being who doesnt lock themself in a#stupid fucking iron maiden style repression over completely innocuous shit that no one would even know im reacting this way to#i cant do it i cant do thjs anymore i cant i want it to stop im so tired and it hurts so so much feeling so much like this#they should make a mind for me that is capable of not inflicting distress this intense on itself i need to explode#actually. maybe since i wont see her for a couple days i can write a long discord message about it instead. i know its a shitty way to#deliver information but maybe it would be easier that way rather than trying to summon the courage to say anything in person when im#usually actively upset abt it at the time and my immediate response to getting upset is to shut down and not express which doesnt help#and its so stupid but i need it to not be like this i cant keep living with her and getting so upset so regularly it has to stop now#ill think about itand maybe draft it. and then i can decide. but right now i need to eat. and pack. and then cut sorry. but its ok#ughhhhfdhf. please let this week be better ill try harder ill say something i have to im the one inflicting this on myself by not talking#about it!!!!!!!!! so. man and i think my dinner is cold now too. oh well#.vent#tw self harm

I might have said it before but I do like how in PokĂŠmon Horizons Ikue Ohtani isn't just playing Pikachu with a hat on. Captain Pikachu has a distinct voice with gruffer tones than OG Pikachu, and it's generally more serious and less playful. Captain Pikachu doesn't fuck around.
#horizons has moments I really enjoy#but it doesn't do quite enough with its cast of human characters#it's unusual for a PokĂŠmon series to have so many adults in the main cast and I like the crew of the Brave Olivine#and their dynamic with each other and the kids is interesting and fun!#there's a moment in the current episode where Old Man Ludlow pulls off something unexpectedly cool and action-packed#and Roy excitedly shouts out 'You ruleâ Ludlow!'#just little interactions like that - like now Roy thinks Ludlow is really cool - which could be followed up more#there was a very curry-focused episode which was also looking at the friendship between Liko and Dot#I want to know more about the relationship between Murdock and Dot - she's his niece and lives with him but wouldn't talk to him for months#Dot's such an odd duck and her voice actress' performance is really deft and funny (as is Murdock's)#I would like it if they interacted more - like Murdock seems really eager to have a proper close relationship with her but is afraid to pus#Murdock is such a warm and caring character#also they really fumbled the opportunity I thought they were going for - I thought Mollie was going to be a Nurse Joy who didn't want to be#she changed her hairstyle and her name and her demeanour but still ended up being a nurse to PokĂŠmon just on a ship instead of in a Center#I think my problem here is that PokĂŠmon Horizons has all the set-up and characters to be a slice-of-life sitcom *with PokĂŠmon*#which would be really fun and I gather something like what PokĂŠmon Concierge is doing but I haven't really watched that yet#but it's more focused on - y'know - PokĂŠmon and a quest storyline that's honestly a bit limp#there's a HUGE Quirky Miniboss Squad and for what? they're not even getting defeated!#they're not really getting time to shine individually either#I want it to be a different type of show than it is trying to be I guess

(Mild DW Christmas 2023 Spoilers in tags)
#watched the latest xmas episode!!! it was fun I had fun. I like both ruby and 15 a lot and the older ladies BETTER show up again because#they were my favorite (to probably NOBODY'S surprise)#(<-both characters are VERY obviously being set up as recurring characters so yes I'll bet they show up again)#and I laughed a lot!!#and the discussion/parallels between ruby being adopted into a loving home vs the doc finding...uh.........Herâ˘. that was GOOD SHIT#idk if I just have my Skepticism Glasses on but I WAS more focused on like...'oh that was a really good acting choice/oh that line delivery#was the most effective possible line delivery/that shift of expression was excellently-done and felt organic' instead of being#fully immersed in the story? I was very much like 'I am watching a story' and being...aware? of Me Watching A Story?#as opposed to like...getting fully lost in the episode to the point where it felt like I was THERE WITH the characters. if that makes sense#and idk if that was just me side-eyeing russell as a defense mechanism (because he has to prove to me that he's not going to#retread the same ground for the 50 millionth time. and that he's not going to be Weird⢠about the fact that the doc is currently a moc)#or if I was supremely Out Of It⢠or if that says something about the actual WRITING of the episode but it's unusual enough for me#that I thought it was worth mentioning#I have some other like...Preliminary Thoughts⢠but I feel like it wouldn't be fair to put them out there when there's only one full episode#with these characters. so I'll see if anything changes before I talk about them.#I WAS disappointed she didn't ask The Question at the very end of the episode though.#but the most IMPORTANT takeaway. is that the lady they got to sing the Musical Number actually knows how to healthily sing#(<-see the first word in my url lmao)

been rewatching rtte
toothless is called T multiple times, but the letter T doesn't exist in the alphabet of this world
i think hiccup was also called H???
hiccup went to the wedding of the man who tried to kill him and his family multiple times. no wonder he thought he could change drago's mind
snotlout is canonically a theater kid
"you're so small and cuddly" "please never say that again"
the twins are really smart, but they're also just stupid
hiccup straight up disappears when he's working on something
heather had a super noticeable crush on astrid
fishlegs got a love interest!! a plus size main character actually has a cool, badass love interest!
it was super hetnormative but it was cute
there was an island full of flying women who were implied to regularly commit cannibalism
hiccup taught all the riders how to fly with toothless, that's so sweet
everyone is a flat earther except for the twins
hiccup almost directly killed a lot of people
and killed a LOT more when destroying their ships
âscaldingâ cal..ding--" "toothle, plama bla!" was pretty much the funniest part of the entire series
dagur was bullied as a kid by a guy 8 years older than him who literally tattooed an imagine of him beating up little dagur in his arm??? What was that all about
actually we need to talk about how messed up everything about dagur is and about how the things that could've/did happen(ed) to him may be the reasons why he's Like That
just why was he imprisoned by the outcasts??? he didn't do anything to them directly
oof my brain is spiraling. "he loved you" "ig now we'll never know" what do you mean he didn't know if his dad loved him
there's a technically musical episode
tuffnut became hiccup's defense attorney and immediately got him the death sentence
hiccup regularly jumps off cliffs
he also jumped off a boat, with his arms tied and without toothless. just where did he think he was going
snotlout's annoying attitude is actually because spitelout pressures him too much and he feels like he has to be perfect for his dad :((
THE 'HICCUP'S EVIL MIRROR' VILLAIN THEME DONE RIGHT YESS!!!
viggo is the best httyd villain change my mind (you can't, swords at sundown, you may bring backup but i will win on my own)
skrill comeback skrill comeback SKRILL COMEBACK!!!!
"COMEEE TO DADDY"
what is a boar pit???
oh my god i had missed this series so much. it has no right to be this funny
this was my childhood. it has forever shaped the way i am
berserker heather the unhinged >>>
actually good disability rep! yay
hiccup complains about his peg leg pinching him
he straight up cannot walk without it and it is shown many times
"well, there are the benefits of a metal leg" after it got caught in a bear trap
funny moments, like snotlout trying to steal it to use it as a weapon
the jokes!! toothless laughing at the jokes!!! hiccup being so fucking done with the twins, who are always making the jokes!
there's an episode where everyone is so sleep deprived they actually start spiraling
astrid becomes a happy go lucky girl, hugs snotlout and tells him he's handsome
the fucking mood swings snotlout got were insane
the twins were straight up just hallucinating
"i sent them to wash their dragons, how could they mess that up?" cut to heather falling on her face with a bucket full of water in her hands
fishlegs becomes so paranoid, he's yelling at everyone all the time
"don't you know the trapper's trap can trap the trapper?? ...oh gods, i must be losing it, i'm quoting dagur"
YOOOO VALKA!!!! it's so nice to see her
hiccup tried to murder dagur to stop him from getting to toothless, which is scary bc it shows just how far he's willing to go for his bff, but also funny because hiccup. that was not going to work
oh the hiccstrid slowburn, how i have missed you
the twins's made up language
there was a beach episode turned murder mystery and a musical episode held at gun point
hiccup has a whole little speech that he periodically gives astrid to remind her that the twins serve a purpose
#i'll make more of these later#i'm just very bored and i love rtte#race to the edge#rtte#how to train your dragon#httyd#httyd rtte#toothless#hiccup horrendous haddock iii#astrid hofferson#snotlout jorgenson#fishlegs ingerman#dagur the deranged#tuffnut thorston#ruffnut thorston#heather the unhinged#avis' post

My thoughts during âThe Signâ [SPOILERS!!!!!]
ID in ALT
More thoughts under the cut
So I think most of us can agree that this is the best episode of Bluey so far. It was so emotional and satisfying in ways that are kinda new for Bluey. It answered so many questions while giving us a few new ones. Iâve been waiting for this episode for months and it did not disappoint in any way.
This is just a Chekovâs firing squad of an episode. As in a lot of stuff that was set up in earlier episodes all pay off in this episode. I kinda understand why people love soap operas now lol. I will say that this episode was a tad overwhelming for me in the best way possible. As in I had to pause and rewind every 30 seconds or so so I could emotionally process what was happening before moving forward (but thatâs a me thing). There was just so much going on and Iâm happy about that.
Now onto individual thoughts about specific things:
The callback to Baby Race (âyou took your first steps in that house!â) really got to me because Baby Race was the first episode of Bluey that I watched and it immediately made me fall in love with it so it just got to me.
When Chilli said âFrisky and I came up here as teenagers toâŚumâŚthink,â my mind started racing immediately with âwhat the FUCK happened at the Lookout?â âWho hurt Frisky and/or Chilli?â And Iâm just so curious about what made Chilli say that line like that but weâll probably never know what happened.
So yeah that scene at the end when the music was playing and Bandit ripped the sign out of the ground and Chilli tackled him to the ground ABSOLUTELY CHANGED my brain chemistry yâall. I canât articulate my feelings any more than that.
I know some people were upset that Brandy ended up getting pregnant but I thought it was great for her! Iâm happy for her! And I think that even though she got what she wanted in the end doesnât negate the feelings she had about her infertility earlier. But I think weâre all wondering who the father is and I donât know if the show really needs to answer that.
The whole message of âweâll seeâ in terms of if something is good or bad is such a mature message that I never really thought of like that so I will be taking that philosophy forward in life. Congratulations Bluey, you managed to teach a 22-year-old childless person something new and insightful about life that I donât think Iâve learned from another show.
I want to know more about what Bob was going through and feeling and why he went to India, but again, weâll probably never know.
I just love how the wedding photos were beautiful but imperfect. Like of course weâre not perfect and nothing will ever be perfect but itâs beautiful and worth remembering anyway.
So many little jokes and moments were so funny in a mature way (I.e. âare we allowed to do that?â And Nana thinking there was about to be a baby announcement) were just so funny and memorable.
I think some people would say itâs a cop-out to end up not selling the house after building it up for 2 episodes but I donât know, I think it works. I think Bluey and Bingo learned a valuable lesson and Bandit (and Chilli kinda) learned itâs not always about making their kids lives âperfectâ in their eyes. Also Iâm just personally glad they didnât end up selling the house and I also kinda like that it wasnât entirely their choice to keep it.
On a more serious note I think this episode has some interesting commentary on like gender roles and gender relations in straight relationships. In this episode Chilli and Frisky (both women) have to deal with their male significant others pressuring them to move with them far away from what they know and love. In the end they donât end up moving and the men didnât seem to have like malicious or selfish intent with it, they were just kinda basing their choices off their jobs instead of whatâs best emotionally for their loved ones. But I think itâs interesting to have this conflict where gender is kinda brought up in a way (âbecause your husband is making youâ). It kinda plays into the traditional idea of like men are the breadwinners and the family has to move with them regardless of what they actually want. And this episode kinda like deconstructs that and says âno, itâs not always about the job or money, itâs also sometimes about connections and emotional attachment.â And Iâm not saying that you should never move or whatever, but really weigh your options. I just thought that it was interesting that this episode kinda touched on that.
So yeah thatâs kinda the main thoughts I had on this episode if you made it this far thank you for reading my rambles and have a good one!

âAt least it's not ferociously attacking God quite as directly as Steven Universe didâŚâ
Not that Iâm surprised by this statement, but can you elaborate on this? Kinda intrigued by your thoughts on Steven Universe.
Okie dokie, youâre not the only one who has asked me about this, so I suppose Iâll poke the hornetâs nest. đ
I havenât talked about this before because I assumed that everyone who wanted to hear my kinds of opinions on stories wasnât watching or interested in Steven Universe.
Itâs like asking vegetarian if they enjoyed a turkey dinner. The turkey dinner was so obviously not made for vegetarians to enjoy, so why would the vegetarian even bother analyzing the turkey?
But I think if some people are asking me why I think Steven Universe is anti-God (of the Bible) its because maybe they donât know what the turkey is. Not completely. (Maybe not you, because like you said, youâre not surprised by my comment.) So Iâll explain my thoughts on Steven Universe.
If youâre just following me because you liked some stuff I posted, but didnât realize that Iâm a Bible-believing Christian and donât want to hear about it, unfollow me now. Because Iâm going to talk about some hot button issues here and the trolls will come out.
Steven Universe is really well-done. The jokes are funny, the writing is believable, the characters have great chemistry, great design, the concept is fascinating, the slow build-up and reveal of the plot elements is great. But when you watch the throne room scene in the last episode of Season 5 âChange Your Mind,â itâs alarmingly clear how much the whole show is not just settling for defending and championing the LGBTQ+ worldviewâit goes all the way to attacking what Christians believe, on the other side.
Anything thatâs pro-LGBTQ+ is doing that by default, but this show goes out of its way to do that.
You have to understand: God created and designed us. Deeper than that; He created and designed romantic relationships, and invented marriage. He didnât just create loveâHe is love. So when humans come along and do what weâve always done since the fall, and say, âIâd rather define what Your thing is and how it works for myself, God,â itâs not only an incredible slap in the face, itâs an attack on Godâs actual identityâand itâs destructive for us and the people around us. Like a fish insisting it can breathe oxygen.
But Steven Universe goes beyond that. It knows that the Christian worldview is itâs biggest opposition. It digs right down to the heart of the worldview-battle. LGBTQ+ worldview says, âI should get to love what I want and be who I am, because Iâm me. Love is love. (By which I mean, any action or relationship I choose to call love is love, because Iâm the one calling it that.)â
Biblical worldview says âNo, wait, you shouldnât base your decisions on you alone; what you want changes day to day, and youâre broken, so you canât ever be satisfied based on what you wantâthe Bible says God made you for something, and you rejected that, and it broke you. Youâre not how youâre meant to be: even what you want and what you think love is is twisted up and can hurt you and others. But if you submit to God Heâll help you, Heâll fix whatâs broken and give you new life by making you how you were supposed to be: Heâll live in you and through you.â
Are we beginning to get the picture?
See, the whole thing with the opposing views between LGBTQ+ and Christian people is as old as time. Itâs not a new debate. Itâs Satan and Eve in the garden. She says, âThis is not how God said things should be,â and Satan says, âAre you sure thatâs what He said? He knows if you do this thing, youâll be like Him. Youâll be god: youâll get to decide âhow things should beâ for yourself.â
He lied and said that disobedience would satisfy her. That she knew what her own heart needed better than the God that made it did. That the very act of being imperfect would make her godlike.
And then Steven Universe comes along and says âif every pork chop were perfect, we wouldnât have hotdogs.â
And has a cast of created being characters whoâs imperfections (Garnetâs forbidden âlove,â Pearlâs obsession, Amethystâs insecurity) are supposedly âthe best thing about them; what makes them who they are.â
And has a main character who used to be a part of the god-like creator relationship, but used her power to come down to earth and completely change who she is into a fully different person.
And has a godlike Creator character who claims she âdoesnât needâ her created beings (just like the God of the Bible) but they all have a little part of their creator in them so she has to repress their imperfections; she holds them all to a standard thatâs impossible to reach called âperfectionâ and punishes them when they donât meet it even though it hurts them to try; she expects them all to do what they were created by her for; she fixes them when they canât meet her standard by shining her light through them and making them extensions of their Creator.
And has a main character who argues, fights back, tries to stop her, and is answered with lines that sound surprisingly like what LGBTQ+ people hear when Christians argue with them: âyouâre only making things worse; youâre just deceiving yourself; even while you resist it your actual light canât help shining through,â etc.
White Diamond just wants everything to be perfect. Like her. She just wants her created beings to âbe themselves.â But what she means is, be how she created them to be.
And sheâs the bad guy. Sheâs playing God in this show, and Rebecca Sugar is saying, âIf God is telling us that can only be happy by being perfect, as He is perfect, and doing what He created us to do, then Heâs wrong. Our imperfections are what make us specialâuniqueâindividualsâfreeâand there is nobody who has the right to take that freedom away from us, not even out creator!â
And you know what?
If God were like White Diamond, like Rebecca Sugar believes Him to be, Steven Universe would be right.
But He is NOT.
God is not a dictator who forces us to conform to a standard of perfection and then smashes us when we donât meet it. He is a King who made us perfect to begin with, and we rejected him, because He allowed us to do that. He knew that true love was love that had to be chosen, and He wanted us to love Him by choice, so he gave us the option. But Rebecca Sugar doesnât understandâthere was never âChoose God or Choose Yourself.â There was only, âChoose God or Choose Nothing.â There was nothing except God. Then He created everything. There is no version of reality where you have something better than God, or even slightly less good but different, to pick. Youâre not jumping from one ship into a smaller one, but at least itâs yoursâyouâre jumping from one ship into a void, and then complaining that thereâs no other ship. Thatâs humans. Thatâs not God. / White Diamond didnât make her creations perfect (Amethyst) and she didnât make them for love. She made them for power. Thatâs not the God of the Bible.
Even when we did choose to try and love ourselves instead of God, and therefore warped our ability to perfectly love at all, He didnât smash us. True, everything fell and was cursed, which is exactly what He warned us would happen if we chose it, but it was a natural consequence of breaking ourselves. And then He didnât leave us that way. He didnât give up on us. And He certainly didnât just zap us, snap His fingers, quick-fix it and turn us all into robots who are extensions of Him, who say they love Him but only because itâs His voice puppeting us to say it.
No. He came to us, chose to give up His life at the exact point on the timeline when Romans, masters in the art of slow, humiliating, torturous death, would be the ones to carry out His crucifixion, and saved us Himself. Through the sacrifice of His own life. And even then, we still have a choice. We get to choose to accept that incredible self-sacrifice when we donât deserve it, and be given new life and a relationship with the Creator who knows us and loves us better than we can love ourselves or receive love from othersâOR we can just keep stubbornly insisting that our slavery to the opposite of what God wants is somehow freedom, and our twisted versions of love are genuine, and weâre not broken, and die like that. Die broken creatures who lived their whole lives stomping their feet and screaming âIâm not a creature, Iâm a god!â
White Diamond sacrifices nothing, because Rebecca Sugar doesnât know the God of the Bible. She just knows her idea of Him. Sheâs never actually gotten to know Him. If she had, sheâd learn how silly and twisted her idea is.
Because you know what, yeah, if every pork chop were perfect, we wouldnât have hot dogs. But people arenât pork chops. And hot dogs have flavor (not better than pork chops) but they are awful for you.
Christians arenât perfect cuts of meat with no individuality or flavor. Just because we all know and love the same God doesnât mean we have no personalities. It just means we donât think so freaking much about what we are, or who we get to be, or what we like and want. Jeez, what a self-centered, narcissistic, self-obsessed way to live. She plays Steven like heâs this wonder-child, innocent and full of heart, who encourages his friends to love and keep trying. But honestly?
This is very pretty animation but itâs not real. Steven looks happy hugging Steven but self-love doesnât ultimately get you that.
Thatâs all based on the premise that what heâs encouraging them to do is actually good, and will make them happy, and will help them love better. And it just wonât. Not in real life. Thatâs not how any of this works. Self-love is just self-obsession. And that is a sure-fire way to hurt you, and everyone around you.
Youâll never be free by choosing to run to a worse master. Youâll never be satisfied with your crappy attempts at loving yourself, because you were made to be loved flawlessly and forever by someone who is Love Himself.
And choosing to identify with your imperfections doesnât make you uniquely you. It just makes you exactly like every other human being marching in the same line since the Fall.
White Diamondâs not relational. Sheâs up high and distant. Thatâs not God. He made you to be in relationship with Him. He loves you, totally and perfectly, and He proved it by sacrificing for You.
So yeah. Thatâs the problem with Steven Universe. Come get me, SU fans.

â PARENT TRAP
in which, a plan is devised to set the two of you up (1.9k)
contains: luke castellan x fem! reader. mortal au. baby percabeth (they are 12). percys pov. loser older brother luke castellan đđ
kashafâs note: i think we can tell i love my music references by now. (answering requests soon!)
i. remember the time - michael jackson
PERCY HAS ALWAYS liked afternoons: sitting on the green couch in his apartment, the smell of his favorite blue cookies wafting through the air, and the constantly running episodes of gilmore girls on the tv â that you had convinced him to give a try â and sometimes the addition of grover, who was prone to start passionate tirades on climate change.
though after summer camp, his relatively quiet afternoons now included at least two mentions of âseaweed brainâ and two of âwise girlâ.Â
percyâs trying to stay focused on rory freaking out over thanking dean for something (annabeth is almost laser-focused), but the doorbell rang a while ago, and you still havenât returned.Â
âannabeth,â he whispered, to no avail â he guessed dean really had that effect on people. he tried again, waving a hand in front of her face. she blinked twice before being lifted from the spell of gilmore girls.Â
âwhat?â annabeth asked.
âwhoâs at the door?âÂ
annabethâs eyebrows rose. she turned around, looking past where you were still holding the door open, one hand animatedly gesticulating, the other still on the doorknob.Â
âthatâs my brother,â annabeth said, turning back to look at percy.Â
but percy isnât paying attention to her right now, instead, heâs focusing on the bits of conversation audible between you and this stranger, whoâs smiling very peculiarly down at you.
ââ no way, me too,â the stranger is saying, grinning.
youâre saying, âdeadass? prove it ââÂ
ââ are you always so skeptical ââÂ
percy gets up off the couch, annabeth beside him, striding over to you and the stranger, who, for a reason he canât quite put a finger on, seems weird.Â
âhi,â percy says, looking at you, pointedly ignoring the stranger. you and the stranger seem to freeze, your hand halting mid-tuck of your hair behind your ear, something percy has only seen you do around one of your ex-boyfriends.Â
âhi,â annabeth says, looking at the stranger, who smiles in response. again, weird.
âready to go?â the stranger asks, âor are you going to take over their spare bedroom?â
âluke, youâre not funny,â annabeth grumbles, but she doesnât look that put out by lukeâs teasing percy notes.Â
youâre smiling, but youâre not looking at annabeth. youâre looking at luke, your one hand still on the doorknob. interesting.Â
âyouâve got your yankees cap?â you confirm as annabeth laces up her converse, as you and luke are engaged in a tiny conversation of your own. percy wordlessly hands the worn-out cap to annabeth once sheâs finished, saying his goodbye.
once annabeth and her brother are long gone and youâre no longer leaning against the door, youâre still smiling widely, and percy wonders why.
ii. shoop - salt n pepa Â
gilmore girls is on again, and luke is here to pick up annabeth. again. but for whatever reason, annabeth still hasnât left, and you and luke are sitting in the kitchen, alone, conversing loudly.Â
annabeth isnât as hyper-focused on dean and roryâs argument as percy had thought she would be a week ago â he assumed that deanâs appeal died the minute he got mad in that banged-up car. annabeth is saying something about architecture, eyes shining, though heâs not sure which one sheâs talking about, hagia sophia or st. basilâs cathedral. your loud laugh seems to ring from the kitchen every minute or so, and well since youâve begun babysitting him, he canât say the sound is unfamiliar, but the frequency is suspicious. he doesnât trust luke.Â
âannabeth,â he says, when sheâs stopped talking.
âpercy,â she responds in the same tone, her smile bright.
âhow long has your brother been in the kitchen for?â he says, trying to sound nonchalant, but missing the mark horrifically.
annabeth looks at the watch on her wrist, âwoah ââ
âwhat does woah mean?â percy knows heâs being impolite, and his mom taught him to never interrupt people, but he canât help it at this moment.Â
âi was just getting to that, seaweed brain,â annabeth rolled her eyes good-naturedly, âwe were supposed to leave an hour and half ago.â
this was bizarre. âno offense, but what does my babysitter and your brother even have in common to be talking nonstop for an hour and half?â
âno idea,â annabeth says, thoughtfully. âis she in a band? lukeâs in a band.â
âno,â percy says, but he thinks he remembers your last boyfriend being in a band. âis your brother a senior?â
âyeah â does she do boxing? luke does.â
âi actually donât know,â percy pauses, âi think we should see for ourselves,â he stands up.Â
âwait,â annabeth says, âthey might go quiet if they see weâre around. letâs just turn off the tv and eavesdrop.â
percy grins, annabeth was such a genius, âyou got it, wise girl.âÂ
theyâre both so silent, he wonders if youâll notice, but with the way youâre laughing again, borderline giggling, actually â which is odd â as you say, âshut up, you know what i meant,â he doesnât think youâll realize.Â
âerm, actually i donât,â luke says, nasally (in what percy hopes is mockery).Â
percy looks at annabeth, who rolls her eyes at him and mouths, âheâs being ironicâ. percy stares at the patterns in the carpet, and annabeth stares at the picture of percy and his mom hung on the wall, as they continue to strain their ears â which isnât hard because of how noisy you and luke are together.
âyouâre so insufferable.â
âand youâre the one who invited me in, so.â
âi was being nice,â you sound like youâre protesting, but percy and annabeth note the amusement in your voice with another shared glance.
âyou? nice? letâs be forreal.â
âiâm literally not even mean.â
âyou literally are.â
annabeth peeks at him, and percy thinks heâs had enough of listening to this conversation, which is quickly becoming weird. and mushy. he can practically see how youâre looking at luke, and how heâs looking at you, which is not at all something he wants to imagine.
he nods at annabeth, and they both try to make their footsteps as loud as possible when they start approaching the kitchen, just in case.Â
heâs grateful to every higher being out there when he and annabeth find you and luke in the kitchen simply sitting next to each other, no funny business involved.Â
iii. doo wop (that thing) - ms. lauryn hill
youâre on the phone, giggling. annabeth is over again, and thereâs no luke in sight, but percy suspects heâs on the other end of the line.Â
percy sighs and turns to annabeth, who always seems to know what to do because this little situation has gotten unbelievably out of hand.Â
âis that your brother on the phone?â
annabethâs concentration on the teetering jenga tower on the coffee table lingers, doo wop (that thing) playing on the tv in the background, âyeah, i think so.â
âhow do you know?â percy asks, watching annabeth carefully choose a jenga block to remove.
âthey like each other,â annabeth says, looking at him, as if itâs as obvious as grass being green.
âno, they donât,â percy pauses for a minute when annabeth raises her eyebrows at him. âhow do you know?âÂ
âlukeâs always calling her at home,â annabeth said, âand he made her a mixtape.â
âthat doesnât mean they like each other, that just means he likes her,â percy points out, crossing his arms.Â
they hear you giggle in the kitchen again. annabeth looks at him as if that proves her point.
annabeth blinks, her face lighting up, âoh my god, percy, we should set them up.âÂ
percy stares at her. he canât deny that for as long as heâs known annabeth, sheâs seldom been wrong, but he doesnât think this is the best idea. but, percy trusts annabeth, so he agrees.
iv. this is how we do it - montell jordan
percyâs spying on you. well, he doesnât consider it to be spying exactly, heâs just making sure nothing happens to you because despite annabethâs constant defense of her brother, percy still doesnât trust luke. percyâs always thought of you more than just his babysitter, after all the attempts at making blue hot chocolate and the comforting after nightmares, youâve turned into his sister.Â
heâs at annabethâs place now, and both of them decided to put their â what annabeth swears is fool-proof â plan into action. step number one: getting luke to invite you inside when you come to pick him up (which was so unbelievably easy, considering how luke has perpetual heart eyes when youâre around).
currently, youâre in the kitchen with luke (the two of you are always congregating in kitchens for some reason), and annabeth decided that she and percy absolutely had to keep an eye on the two of you.
youâre gasping, âluke castellan, you are such a liar.â
luke is laughing, âno iâm not.â his cheeks are red.
youâve seemed to notice this, and percy can see your gaze soften as you look at luke, but that doesnât stop you from making your point, âno, oh my god, you call me the mean one but here you are, talking shit about your rivals, just because theyâre better?â
percy has seen you argue with your ex-boyfriends, but not like this â not bright-eyed, and smiling, and none of them have been able to just flow the way you seem to with luke. this is it, he thinks, annabeth was completely and utterly right (as she is 90% of the time).Â
âyou take that back right now, those motley crue knockoffs arenât better than us,â luke says, sounding kind of angry, but percy can see his smile.
âyouâre totally bugging,â you say, âwhatâs wrong with motley crue?â
luke looks scandalized, and almost as if heâs pleading, he says, âplease tell me youâve at least listened to guns n roses,â pushing his hands together in a namaste position.
âi donât live under a rock, castellan,â you rolled your eyes at him, pushing his hands down. annabeth shares a look with percy.
âi mean, you never know,â he says, and you scoff, shoving him.
percy raises his eyebrows at annabeth, and she seems to know exactly what heâs thinking â time to put step two into action: set up a going-out idea.
percy and annabeth pretend to walk closer to the kitchen, to give the two of you time to spring apart, because you and luke werenât a very pg distance right now â maybe pg-thirteen, but percy wasnât supposed to be watching those, so.
annabeth jerks a finger at percy, as you and luke looked up at their arrival, addressing luke, âpercy doesnât believe that your band actually plays in public.â
percyâs head whips toward annabeth, trying not to glare at her, because the look on lukeâs face right now was not at all amusing, but at least you were smiling, so youâd definitely stop luke from killing him.
âyeah, luke,â you say, smirking, âwhere do you guys even play?â
luke frowns, âthe usual but weâre playing at the fair next week if youâre so interested.â the last part is aimed at percy, but their plan is going well so far, so percy doesnât think heâll have to sleep with one eye open tonight.
âwhen?â you ask, interested.
percy watches luke turn to you, surprised. âsaturday â why, you wanna come?â
âyeah,â you admit easily.
percy looks at annabeth, whoâs smiling and percy canât help but feel proud of their idea.
âreally? we donât go on until like seven though.â
âyeah, someone has to be there to cheer for you so you donât feel too bad when no one else does,â you grin.
luke turns to you, masking his smile with a fake air of irritation, âgee, thanks.â
âwhat are friends for?â
percy shares a disappointed glance with annabeth who begins to shake her head, as lukeâs smile freezes in place, and you suddenly look extremely remorseful.
time to come up with a new plan.Â

In addition to Yor's epiphany scene, this scene was the other one I was most looking forward to in season 2 - a scene that, in my opinion, is one of the most Twiyor-ish scenes in the series so far đ
Why is it so significant? Because there was no reason for Twilight to put on any Loid Forger acting in that moment. He wasn't conversing with nor being scrutinized by anyone. So why would he give that soft smile followed by such affectionate, comforting words as "ăç˛ăć§/otsukaresama"? (this can be translated in many ways, but generally it's something you say to thank someone for their hard work).
The answer is because it's something he truly felt...he understood the sacrifice Yor made for Anya's happiness and genuinely appreciated it (if only he knew the sacrifice she made on the larger scale, lol). While he's a bit perturbed at first since some onlookers were snickering at him, it didn't take long for him to soften and then graciously carry his queen and princess the girls back to the ship đ
But Twilight overall was really soft in this episode and I loved it~ From his blush upon seeing Yor to the several times he gave that same soft smile when talking with/looking at her...I think Anya was right when she called him out on the ship about missing his wife đ
I liked how the anime conveyed his shock when noticing her bruised face...what must have been his thought at that moment? đ
The scenes of the family activities translated better in animated form in my opinion. While they were each only a single panel in the manga, they lasted a few seconds each in the anime, plus the addition of the insert song helped the with the comfy, wholesome vibe~ Also the part where Yor inadvertently chucks Anya across the ocean is still hilarious.
Loid's dorky skip at the beginning of the episode translated very well in animated form too đ
The ending of this chapter in the manga always felt a bit rushed to me...it quickly jumps from the aforementioned scene of them returning to the ship, to suddenly being home, reuniting with Bond and Franky, having a meal together, then Twilight meeting Sylvia, all within a few panels. Even though I wish the anime added more than just some additional scenes of the ship leaving the island, I felt it flowed much better in the anime since, just like the family activities, each scene in the ending lasted a second or two instead of being a single illustration.
But I love how this chapter/episode ends, with Yor, Anya, and Bond napping while Anya draws about her family vacation. This seems to take place the next day or maybe later the same day they got home, so makes sense they'd still be tired from the trip!
By the way, the manga has this additional scene showing that Olka and company are safe. Weird that the anime didn't stick it in at some point.
Also, the anime team didn't have to go so hard with this episode's key visual but they did...and I love it đ Might actually be my favorite of the key visuals so far!
I was very happy to see the "surrounded by liars" panel finally animated! This is such a funny scene and a great way to fully wrap up the cruise arc.
I also burst out laughing at Yuri's locker đ¤Ł
Damian is surprisingly laid back in this episode. I think the reason is because Anya's antics aren't directly involving him. He tends to go total tsundere only when she's actually talking to him, lol.
The new scene of Yor getting the keychains for her coworkers was a nice addition! Guess it's canon that Yor and Anya didn't sleep for the entire trip back, lol. Glad they got to spend family time on the ship too! (though I wish we could have seen Yor's reaction waking up in Loid's bottom bunk bed, haha. He must have brought her to his room since he wouldn't know where her room is. Unless she woke up before he even put her in a bed, in which case she would have been super embarrassed knowing he was carrying her around in public đ)
Looks like next week the anime will be changing the order of things a bit and giving us the Becky home-wrecking and Fiona chapters (the latter of which seems to have some anime original content?) The Becky chapter is one of my favorite stand-alone chapters...I'm already dying of laugher thinking about it đ

I may go into more detail about âSinsmasâ later, but I did want to talk about what I considered to be the one scene/sequence that I thought was very well done and that I truly enjoyedâOctaviaâs song, âI Will Be Okayâ.
(Song/Character Discussion below)
Octaviaâs song is almost everything I could have asked for. A somber echo of Stolasâ song from season 1, Octaviaâs I Will Be Okay, finally, finally, gives Octavia a voice and the chance to express her grief over her fatherâs abandonment.
For the first time in the series, thereâs no one to tell Octavia that she should give her dad some slack or that she should forgive him. Sheâs finally allowed to be upset, to fully mourn her relationship with Stolas and to get mad about what happened. Sheâs finally allowed to start working towards accepting the ways Stolasâ neglected her, and begin healing from that pain and trauma.
Octaviaâs experience is both terribly heart-wrenching and, in the most painful way, freeing. The lyrics reflect that perfectly, with Octavia acknowledging that while sheâs not okay now because of everything Stolas put her through, she WILL be okay, and will grow into her own person without him.
The song is a direct response to Stolasâ. Octavia is answering him, saying âYes, I will be okay. Not because of anything that you were supposed to or failed to provide me as a father, but because I will forge my own path, and in doing so will heal from the pain you caused me.â
Itâs a bittersweet song about finding the strength to cut contact with someone you loved who has repeatedly failed you in the worst ways, and who isnât going to change.
I do have one âcriticismâ for this song and sequence, not because anything from it was poorly done, but because, in my opinion, the songâs visuals could have been even better.
The following scene was in the original storyboards for âI Will Be Okayâ, and was changed in the final episode:
I think the decision to change the visuals for these lyrics in the song was a mistake. Please donât get me wrong, the animation in this entire episode was fantastic, my critiques of Helluva Boss are almost never about the animation.
But the above sequence just has so much more emotional weight to me. Itâs the visualization of Octavia realizing she canât rely on Stolas, that she has to look to herself for comfort.
Octavia taking her younger self from her neglectful fatherâs arms, symbolizing that sheâs accepted that Stolas cannot be depended on and that sheâll have to take care of herself now, is such a powerful image.
It really is a shame to me that they cut this scene, because I think it fully encapsulates everything Octavia has been through in such a simple and effective way. I think the scene really loses something by cutting this visual.
With all of that said though, Octaviaâs song, and the scene where she FINALLY calls Stolas out for his behavior were very cathartic for me. I know that the sceneâs intent was most likely to make us empathize with Stolas for losing his daughter, but I found myself empathizing only with Octavia, and hoping that she gets the time she needs to heal.
I would love it if the show actually let her decide whether or not she wants Stolas back in her life, but given the way HBâs writers portray women, I worry that itâs likely some big event will happen that ârevealsâ Stella to be awful, and Octavia will forgive Stolas just like that, and will probably end up apologizing to him instead (like in âSeeing Starsâ)
Anyway, just like Octavia being the only good thing in Stolasâ life, âI Will Be Okayâ was, in my opinion, the only good thing in âSinsmasâ. (well that and Octavia calling Stolas out)

Congrats to everyone who has been working on W2H2! đ If it's alright, I'd like to ask to ask 2 questions:
Is there by chance an official ref of colors for Debbie, or is it still up to interpretation at the moment?
Would you say that your personal, real life experiences within the 10 years moving from W2H to W2H2 shifted the tone/story of the series in some way? Something that I've always been fascinated with when I started looking more into W2H was the shift in Sock's character from the original comic -> first film -> second film, and Jonathan's character from the first film -> second film.
Thank you! â¨
I actually just made some 'official'-ish colors for Debbie! Her voice actor Kaitlyn wanted something to use on a banner for conventions haha... so here you go!
2. I'm not really sure how to answer this one, haha. I mean I've definitely changed as a person over the course of making each iteration of W2H. I started the comic while I was at community college, before I went to art school. I adapted it into an animation for my graduation project. And I started W2H2 a couple years after I graduated college. So there's a good 2-3 years between each attempt at W2H I've done, haha. I think a lot of my original ideas from the comic had to change because it needed to be condensed into a short film. I didn't even GET to Jonathan yet in the comic! Some things just didn't make sense to me anymore, like the idea of Sock already having a human body count. It'd just be absurd for him to be able to hide it for so long! Plus, if I made it so that Sock has only ever entertained the idea of murder, it makes his new job that much more appealing-- it's a chance for him to really lean in to this thing he's always had to hide. Between the first and second films though, I mean... I think there's been some tonal shift, for sure (I don't know about a character shift? We'll get to that haha) But basically, when I was first thinking about W2H2, my idea was "Sock and Jonathan hang out and attempt to figure out touch physics, also there's some drama about a journal Jonathan keeps." All of the hell stuff is something that came from bouncing ideas around with my friends, Michael and Neil. I was worried that sending Jonathan to hell would be too bonkers for a "2nd episode", but we all kinda agreed that enough time had passed that the fans would probably enjoy something higher stakes, so it would be fine. (I'll give everyone a moment to realize this conversation would've been happening in 2015-16... ha.)
We also kind of thought, y'know... I have no idea how many more of these there's even gonna' be, so why not go a little bigger with this one? W2H2 is a higher stakes story than what I set out to make in the beginning, that's for sure. It is interesting to compare all of them.. the employee handbook was actually from the comic and I cut that because it wasn't helpful for W2H... but then it became helpful for W2H2, so it came back! Haha. I'm curious to know in what ways people think the characters have changed though. (And is that a good thing or a bad thing?) Especially a character like Jonathan, no one's really even seen that much of him yet, I think most of the characterization comes from fandom, or like... art I've drawn, I guess? Haha... I'm not sure! I guess Sock's a little more confident and antagonistic in this one (though he'll have his moments of hesitation... we're only at Part 1 right now!), and Jonathan has had to become a more vocal/active character, just by nature of the kind of story it is, I suppose. But yeah, I'm not sure! Happy to hear your guys' thoughts though!

episode 19
as you can probably tell, i've thought a lot about what post-canon one would look like in my vision... i've said before that i have issues with straightforward fix-its, and i do genuinely love the tragic open-ended conclusion that the series has, but i... am not immune to playing with characters like dolls LOL
here's some writeups about where everyone is at mentally in these pictures. please please please PLEEEASE feel free to ask me more about this cuz i love talking about my beautiful mind palace
charlotte: somehow the most optimistic person in here, mostly out of necessity. when she died, she saw parker leading her out of a cave as her waiting room and was about to take his hand when airy respawned her, so she has a brief moment of bonding with bryce when he talks about the waiting room and seeing stella. with the knowledge that there is potentially a way to get out (bryce and liam being the proof) and the fear of rotting away again she is by far the most actively motivated to help liam figure out the computer. a lot of her days are spent talking to liam over the mic and writing out the code in the dirt so she can try to understand it. she still has to push against her natural misanthropy (and often shouts at liam or bryce for being fucking stupid and useless) but both working on the code and helping amelia give her something concrete to focus on outside herself. she wants to get home so she can make amends with her friends. charlotte is scared of dying! she's really genuinely horribly scared of dying and has awful vivid nightmares about rotting away. she often pushes amelia into talking about her life which causes some tension, but it's because she really hates seeing amelia lose herself like that - a metaphorical rotting away of the self.
subway seat & atom: not on the same level of pure existential depression as the batch 1 contestants, but they both feel the hopeless mood pretty harshly regardless. subway feels very lonely as the only hidden object still 'awake', and likes to carry whippy creamy around rather than just leave him sitting on the ground constantly. tray is too big and unwieldy for him to do that with, but he 'hangs out' with her anyway, talking to her and whippy creamy in the hopes that it'll get them to want to wake up again. atom doesn't talk much, but he still carries his piece of grass. he's definitely the person who's the least affected by the prospect of being stuck on the plane forever, since he⌠doesn't really perceive existence in the same way as everyone else? he's an atom. but his time in the competition definitely made him view everyone else as friends, and he feels even more powerless than usual in the face of this incomprehensibly difficult problem.
amelia: falls into total hopelessness when bryce rejoins, basically seeing it as the final sign that they're never going home. still calls everyone their competition names (she actually gets into a big fight with bryce about it lol). she gets really clingy and dependent on bryce when he first comes back but it crashes and burns pretty quickly when, during an argument, bryce tells her how much he wishes he could just go back and never have let liam in and forgot about everything⌠which really sucks for amelia to hear, given that she's part of that everything. after that, with bryce isolating himself, she's kind of reliant on charlotte to keep her going. she blames liam for airy dying and secretly kind of thinks he killed him but just isn't telling them⌠she also doesn't really believe there's any way of getting out and is just kind of waiting around to die of, like, old age i guess. after how long she's been here, amelia is convinced that she has nothing to even go back to and frequently forgets details about her life. regularly cries and hates being alone. the shift markings on the side of the water tub have changed from being a way to keep track of time and stay sane to a horrible reminder of how long they've been here and how much longer of an eternity they have before them.
bryce: hates himself and liam and airy and the plane and his entire stupid fucking life. bryce is really, really fucking pissed off at liam for losing the notes and letting texty die and every other mistake he's made, and isn't shy about telling him that. as well as being angry, he's also incredibly miserable, because he was finally starting to turn his life around (he quit drinking after the plane) and now it's all for nothing - and even worse, those 7 months he spent getting better were 7 months he did nothing to help the rest of them, especially amelia. he's horribly guilty about that, and that he didn't tell amelia about the fake votes before he was eliminated⌠but finds it easier to just let liam take the heat for that one at first. after he fights with amelia about it he becomes a bit of a hermit, hanging out by himself next to the plug, and never responds when liam tries to talk. contemplates suicide regularly but pretty much the only option is drowning himself, and the idea of that still scares him more than staying like this forever. would kill for a beer.
liam: tortured by horrible guilt every day over a million different things. these include getting bryce pulled back into this (plus delayed guilt over getting him for real killed), letting texty die and not saying anything about the charger, not telling amelia that everything was fake, knowing that charlotte is going to die if he doesn't get really smart really fast⌠he's frequently gripped by fits of rage where he almost smashes the computer and has to hobble around outside with the axe for a while to blow off steam. he has really bad nightmares and dissociative episodes, made worse by the isolation and spending hours in a dark cave. liam really wants to fix things with everyone but genuinely has no idea how to start that conversation. he assumes airy killed himself (and views it as an unforgiveably cowardly move) and directs a lot of resentment towards him. he has a lot of things he wants to say, especially to bryce, but the fact that he cant talk to anybody one on one makes things difficult. spends a lot of time just reading through the code, too afraid to actually make any changes in case everyone explodes, but talking it through with charlotte at least makes him feel like he's doing something. more than he would like to admit, liam catches himself staring at the plane as if it's a simulation or a livestream.
