#something about giving a himbo a chance at character development

it occurs to me that neo was kinda-sorta typecast to play jock-y, airhead-y characters (na [who was mvp of that show, don't even @ me], duane, up), then i'm sure there was something somewhere about him getting to play a character with a little more to him (kan).
and according to some very complex mathematics i can't possibly share, what that boils down to is that neo trai is the only man who could play resident disaster slut, boston.ve

hi
tyson's actor has been announced
thoughts on that? i remember you talking about tyson's down syndrome coding and the way there's a big chance of being portrayed in an ableist way
I already talked about my main thoughts on Tyson's casting [here] but in summary - yeah, no, confidence is not inspired right now. I had mentioned before that if they didn't cast an actor with down syndrome for Tyson I cannot see it going well no matter what, and given how s1 handled disability themes (aka erasing the majority of references to adhd/dyslexia and other disabilities, turning Sally into an autism speaks mom, etc) I doubt they're going to reference Tyson's down syndrome coding at all, which is disappointing on multiple levels.
A.) His entire character and the arcs relating to his character, particularly his relationship with Percy and Percy's character development in SoM are ALL surrounding Tyson having down syndrome and themes of grappling with ableism. SoM is supposed to be where we solidly establish Percy as a character who stands up for other marginalized kids, particularly other disabled kids, and if you remove Tyson's down syndrome then that entire aspect of the story goes up in smoke - which is a problem because disability themes are central and core to the entire series. You can't remove them without ruining the basis of the entire plot, because it's disability metaphors all the way down. If by some miracle they do try to keep his disability coding, the casting right now at all levels point to it turning out horribly - firstly they've cast an abled actor to play a disabled character - not cool! Especially given down syndrome is not usually an invisible disability - like I give leeway to adhd/dyslexic casting because it really doesn't affect anything at all. It'd be nice but ultimately nothing is different really - But something like this is significantly more important. Secondly, because we know from the casting call that they're keeping the "Tyson is 'actually' a little kid" (< actually part of his down syndrome coding - it's an outdated medical concept from the 2000s which is very ableist so already not looking great that they kept that) them casting a nearly 30 year old for a character who is supposed to be in Percy's grade (Percy being 13) just sounds like a horrible set-up for a very ableist portrayal.
B.) Based on how s1 went, recent books in the franchise, and this casting, the more likely route is they're going to erase Tyson's disability coding entirely and likely replace it with Tyson being a "himbo" character. I was talking with the TA server about this and apparently according to some of them Daniel Diemer in The Half Of It very much gave off the vibe that with his Tyson casting they're going to go the "himbo" route. Which would make sense given in like TOA, TSATS, and CoTG it seems like Rick learned what a "himbo" is and has been trying to shoehorn that character archetype into everything. Also in recent books Rick has just completely started erasing or ignoring disability themes, including applying ableist tropes to characters instead (Percy being a goofy lazy idiot who dislikes school, Nico being infantilized, Annabeth's disabilities basically being entirely erased, etc etc). Suffice to say it's not looking good I'm not happy about it! :T
Like, in all, I'm sure Daniel Diemer is a great actor. I'm not accusing him of being ableist or anything. (Now, Disney? maybe.) But I am really disappointed in this casting and there is literally no way Disney can justify it. Like, what, "he's tall and Tyson is supposed to be tall?" Character height has literally never been a factor for any other casting and it absolutely is not relevant at all for Tyson. The majority of casting so far has been blind casting (save for age for the most part) - why is it suddenly so important now for Tyson's height of all things? When there are SIGNIFICANTLY more important aspects of his character to be casting for? So far it seems the only casting they've actually paid attention to disability with is Hephaestus with Timothy Omundson, which is nice, but one out of A Lot is not great given this is the disability series! We really should not be getting this many abled actors playing disabled characters (and DEFINITELY not be getting this much erasure of disabled and disable-coded characters - Grover's muscular disease, lack of references to adhd/dyslexia, erasure of Percy's PTSD, etc. Chiron's disability being brought from coding to explicit is nice, but they couldn't be bothered to actually cast a disabled actor for it too? Honestly I wouldn't even mind some of the abled casting as much if they actually bothered to acknowledge the disability themes at all!). And this is a trend so far because Disney has also completely neglected casting plus-sized actors for plus-sized characters in the series (INCLUDING TYSON). It generally just reeks of Disney being afraid to cast anybody but able-bodied skinny actors as much as possible, or at the very least being completely unwilling to touch upon the disability themes of the series - which is stupid, given it's the entire basis of the series.
tl;dr: I have exactly zero faith in s2.
#pjo#riordanverse#pjo tv crit#tyson pjo#ask#Anonymous#disability#long post //#i didnt have high expectations for s1 and they let me down. somehow i expect s2 to manage to disappoint me even more than im anticipating.#also forgive if this is somewhat nonsensical i am in a rambling mood this evening#also my eyes are not focusing enough to proofread this lol#tbh there's also an entire 'nother rant one could go on about how easily himbo characters can fall into ableist tropes#but im too exhausted to go on that rant

Scooby Doo: Together Forever
The adult Scooby Doo idea I mentioned starting discussing with @vegalocity
After years and years of making their name known through mystery solving, brushes with the supernatural, and gaining top marks in their college classes, Mystery Incorporated heads back home to Cool Crystal, Florida, for summer break. It's nice to unwind and charge the batteries at home...
Until summer is over, and they are unable to leave.
Old mysteries will be uncovered, and the perfect skin of Cool Crystal will be ripped apart as Mystery Incorporated tries to break free, helped by allies like the DJ Angel Dynamite, ex-Manticore Marcie, and the mysterious Mr. E.
Characters below:
Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated's heart, Scooby has a big heart, a bigger stomach, and an even bigger talent in magic. He serves as Shaggy's familiar and seems to have a magical history of his own. Despite his easily spooked nature, Scooby is determined to protect his friends, his family, no matter the cost.
Shaggy Rogers- 23, majoring in cooking/athletics/zoology: Shaggy is the jack of all trades in the gang and the strongest. He specializes in cooking and kitchen magic, and his powers possibly stem from a family history of magic. He started learning magic after the werewolf incident and flourished with Velma's help. Despite being easily scared and distracted by his stomach, Shaggy loves the gang and will make sure they all survive this.
Daphne Blake- 22, majoring in semiotics/molecular neurobiology: Daphne was a normal wealthy heiress until a demon broke into her home in hopes of stealing her pure soul as a child. Now, Daphne trains in various athletics, hoping one day to take revenge for the death of her mother, having trained her body to actually be able to punch ghosts. She's also the smartest emotionally-wise, actually taking the steps to admit her love for all of the gang.
Freddy Jones- 22, majoring in engineering: Freddy is the himbo of the group and serves as the group's shield- to the point of jumping in front of the gang to protect them from anything, whether ghost or actual person. The ghost thing seems to not be a problem for some unknown reason. Still, he's never seen without his lucky ascot, something enchanted by the rest of the gang. He can also talk about traps all day long if you give him the chance.
Velma Dinkley- 20 (about to turn 21), majoring in criminology/history/etc.: For years, Velma claimed to never believe. However, years of running into various supernatural phenomena have caused her to believe and start training. Thanks to long hours in the library, avoiding the rest of the town as the main source of gossip, Velma can find any book and shares its knowledge with Shaggy. She's also the only one willing in the gang to put on a mask herself.
Other characters-
Mr. Blake- Daphne's father who has spent his life in a mental health ward after the violent death of his wife. He claims to have visions of Cool Crystal burning, so many dead, and over it all... Scooby. Doctors believe that he isn't helped by his room sitting next to Pericles' cell.
Mrs. Dinkley: Velma's suffocating mother, Angie, has long believed in ghosts, to the point of creating an entire business out of the various supernatural phenomena that haunt the town. However, even if she's willing to drag dirty secrets out for money, she has her own secrets.
Angel Dynamite: The town DJ, Angel has provided a safe space for the kids- specifically Velma- since middle school. While she holds many secrets, including how she learned to throw CDs like throwing stars, she has none that she's willing to endanger the kids with.
Marcie Fleach- Velma's former science fair rival, Marcie has developed a strong friendship with Velma and the gang to the point of a mutual crush. She attends online college as an engineering major, having stayed in town to help her dad with their amusement park. Although she doesn't believe in the supernatural yet, she is more than willing to help Shaggy with taste-testing.
Sheriff Stone- The town's sheriff. Also an idiot.
Ed Machine- The CEO of the biggest company in town, Destroido Corp., Machine stays stone-faced throughout everything, even as he serves as an errand boy.
Amelia- A newcomer to Cool Crystal, Amelia has supposedly moved in order to serve as the new head of security of Destroido Corp. She's much nicer to the gang than her stonewalling boss, willing to help them in solving mysteries and turn a blind eye when they sneak in.
Mr. E- A mysterious supplier of clues and hints as the gang learns about the dark secrets of Cool Crystal. He planned to play the gang like chess pieces, but he was unprepared for the weirdness of this group of kids.
Professor Pericles- Pericles has admitted to having caused the disappearance of a group of kids in order to gain "knowledge." He's known to be sadistic, willing to cause whatever harm he needs in order to reach his mysterious goals. The gang provides a way to both reach Mr. E and find information while he is locked up.
Nidhogg- A mysterious spirit, Nidhogg seems to be very interested in the mystery in the city's heart. He's calm and manipulative, bordering on gentle for the gang, whispering in their ears, unlike E and Pericles' blatant power struggle.

Ted Lasso predictions
Ok so I was gonna write this before season 3 started, but then the internet lied to me about exactly WHEN that would be, so now episode 1 is out, and I haven't written it, so I am showing SOME INCREDIBLY RESTRAINT in writing this now, before I watch.
I have a bajillion thoughts, and I want to write them down so I can go either "I told you so" or "wow I was way off base", depending.
Okay let's go.
The biggest question I struggle the most with is whether Ted/Rebecca will be a thing.
The show has consistently built them up as soulmates, showing us the connection between the two. I could point to a million moments of foreshadowing. Jason has called them soulmates. But will that be romantic? I would honestly love it either way. I'd love to see the two of them romantically together, but I'd also love for some a big influential show to keep them platonic and show that that's how they are.
What I do know more or less for sure, is that come 1/3 into episode 11, there will be some big revelation between Rebecca and Ted, in Ted's office. This one has been foreshadowed SO heavily.
And it just seems like they both have had all of the character development to be ready to be together. Rebecca saying she needs to let herself be loved by someone wonderful - but she wasn't able to with Sam so now she's still trying to figure out why. And Ted of course dealing with his emotions and his problems, making him a much healthier partner to be with.
The main thing that stops me from thinking it'll be a thing is that I don't think Ted will stay in London. He needs to go back to Henry.
I already thought that, but couldn't necessarily point to something big, but then Brendan mentioned in an interview something about how Beard has immersed himself in local culture, while Ted hasn't. Which yeah - he's barely changed a single thing in his apartment, or his clothing style, while Beard clearly has. Ted isn't making a long-time home, it's like he's living in a motel.
Also references to Wizard of Oz and the red shoes. "There's no place like home." to mirror "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" in the pilot. (Rebecca is shown with the red shoes. Does that mean she'll come with Ted?)
Nate saying "back to Kansas, where you belong, with your son" and it clearly hits Ted. The phone call where Henry forgot his lunch, and Ted looked devastated to be ocean away. Whatever happens, Ted needs to be with his son, he needs to be a better dad than his own dad was.
I think/hope we'll see Ted's mom. There's only minor things that have told me that might be happening, but nonetheless. Ted making a point of "and my mom" whenever he talked about his dad's suicide. Ted saying "I love meeting people's moms." And there's some filming pics that shows an older lady with him, with a suitcase.
As for Roy/Keeley, I feel like they're gonna break up. There's a lot of build-up to it. The issues between them. Ms Bowen. Jamie still being in love with her. The question is whether it's gonna be forever or not. I have a vague feeling they're the kind of people who come into each other's lives to make each other better - that they're transitional. They both very much needed to date someone like the other one. But that doesn't mean they're destined to be together forever. Could go either way though. We'll see.
And it depends on what they decide to do with Jamie, which I actually don't necessarily have any predictions for. I've loved seeing his himbo development. And I find it deeply interesting how much Ted thinks about him, how he seems to feature in Ted's panic attacks.
And what are they gonna do about Nate? Well, obviously Ted isn't giving up on him. I've read a lovely post about how it's not going to be one big redemption, and I agree. I think Nate has to crawl himself out of the hole he's dug himself (emotionally), and I hope he does that. I hope it takes effort, but I hope he makes it. Whatever his flaws, he does deserve happiness, and deserves a chance to be a better person.
I also think the show is finally gonna dig into homophobia in football. AT LEAST I PRAY. I've been wanting this for so long, and obviously the show is pro-queerness.
So, how? Trent Crimm doing something more meaningful. He's heavily implied to be gay (based on that one pub scene), and he cares about sports, and he cares about major issues. (Everyone and their mum has predicted he'll write a book about the team or about Ted.)
There's also Colin, implied slightly subtler to be gay. ("Like Grindr.") Plus on red carpet a week ago, his actor implied love would be in his future, and he also said something about getting a storyline you can sink your teeth into, and about Colin living his best life. I already thought this might be a thing, but the interview kind of confirmed it.
What about Dr Sharon? Not sure what role she has to play, if it's important or not. Is she involved in the whole gay thing? Does she go work for Rupert? Who knows trtbh.
Also apparently we're getting a new player called Zava, who Dani adores. How will this play? No idea but I'm excited to see.
Sam? Well, he's got the restaurant plot. Making a safe space for his team, because that's what he needed when he got there. It kind of sounds like that's his main plot this season. (I don't think him and Rebecca are getting back together.) Is the restaurant called "Ola's"? That's supposedly the name of an episode, and it's a Nigerian name, so.
There's a new character named Jack. She's described as a charming venture capitalist, so I assume she wants to work with Keeley. The fact she's charming and played by a queer actress makes me think Keeley is gonna dip her toes back into the lady pool, or at least be tempted to.
OH!! And for the love of god, please give us a fucking musical episode. Almost everyone in this show can sing, for fuck's sake.
Uhhhh I think that's it. I can't think of anything more off the top of my head, or looking at the character list and such.
SO NOW I'M GONNA GO WATCH THE FUCKING EPISODE.

YO just wanted to ask who ur fave bleach characters are! I like Toushiro the most, but Karin and Momo grew on me after my recent Bleach binge!
HEY I LOVE THIS QUESTION thanks for giving me chance to ramble about my favourite characters *insert maniac laughter*
URAHARA KISUKE
So as you can see from my URL I obviously love Urahara Kisuke!! He’s such a complex character and I guess I have a thing for Miki Shinichirou because his voice is *chef’s kiss* In the beginning we don’t really think much of him - he’s like the sensei character that almost every anime has that guides the main character (Ichigo). And in the context of an (what seems to be in the beginning) urban fantasy it’s not very jarring to have some random guy appear, and I love how he stands out subtly while also fitting in at the same time. His outfit and entire get up as well - a guy who wears geta with a bucket hat and haori is perfectly normal in Japan, and it actually looks cool on him. He looks like a normal guy and that's what fucks with the audience.
And then you go forward and realise he's a wacky character. He lives with a very hot woman who transforms herself into an equally stunning cat, the definition of a himbo presenting genius, and two kids. Seems like a dysfunctional found family dynamic that would come out of a sitcom, doesn't it? OH BUT WAIT it actually is one!! And these people are actually very fucking powerful!! Why the hell does this man have so much shit lying around?? Is he strong or something?
It's not until the swing back the pendulum arc that we find out he is, in fact, a very strong guy™. I love how little character development Kisuke gets in terms of his personality - most of the central character gets a major revamp; a lot of the Gotei 13 captains either get a reality check on their personalities (Soifon, Byakuya, Hitsugaya etc.) or they decide to go completely fuck it (looking at you, betrayal trio). The ones who don't are 'mentor'-like characters, the ones who are old and mature enough that something like a guy upending the very principles of Soul Society wouldn't affect them very much. Because Kisuke is one of those older characters, he doesn't need a personality change, but also the fact that he hasn't changed much from 100 years ago is very in character for him - or so we thought.
The fact is Kisuke actually very much did get a character change - to be more precise, a change of principles. 100 years ago, his morals are more clearly defined than the present. Sure, he recruits his employees from the Maggot's Nest, but he also tried to defend his innocence against Central 46 and was adamant to do so until Yoruichi broke in and kicked ass. He also struggled with saving Hiyori during that fateful night. This is obviously a part of his personality that points to adhering to the side of caution - which is in line with his entire personality; Kisuke is very much someone who doesn't do anything unnecessary, someone who puts on a friendly mask to exist because giving in to those deeper desires requires compromise. So he doesn't - he doesn't because that's the path that allows everyone to accept him and allows him to slip under the radar. He doesn't want to stand out, you see? And that's what makes him so endearing - everyone is running around playing hero or captain and he just,,,wants to chill in his dysfunctional family and makes stuff. Even though he stops deliberating on the means of how he does things in the present (e.g. Playing dirty in all the battles he's part of, casualties not being his priority in his plans etc.), that sense of wanting to fade into the background is still very much there (I.e. that conversation with Aizen when he's being sealed away).
And that makes him so frustrating to see at times, but also a very multi-faceted character!! Because under ordinary circumstances, anyone would want to stand out, especially when you have such talent and intellect as Urahara Kisuke. Yoruichi even berates him for this - when she nominated him for the 12th Division, he didn't want it and she tells him to shut up. It's interesting how well this aspect of him was written, and I really like the portrayal of his character.
Not to mention his zanpakutou - she intrigues me so fucking much?? There's an analysis of Benihime with Urahara's character that really tackles his personality and it just clicked for me (I'll reblog it someday) but basically there's a sense of masochistic tendency to punish himself and to hide his genius away. And you have to wonder - why does this man do this? What kind of past did he have? Kubo really has to write this because it's literally a crime to leave us hanging like this.
And of course, the fact that he's so fucking queer coded. I can't really elaborate on this because there's no one aspect that signals that to me, but I'm sure queer people understands this - his character is one that doesn't have traditional values of masculinity attached (100 years ago even Shinji, who had long hair, would have a stronger sense of 'traditional' masculinity attached to him, I'd argue) and yet he's still very powerful.
Overall I'd say his intelligence and character design and personality is what makes me love him so much!! And the fact that he treads the thin line between seriousness and humour, being the mentor and the clown/fool. At the end of the day Urahara is the only one who doesn't take himself seriously. And that's very fascinating.
SHIHOUIN YORUICHI
Slightly less like an essay now, largely because I haven't delved into the manga yet so I don't know the back story and more intensities of other characters, esp Yoruichi.
Anyways first thing and reason is that she's hot. She's insanely hot and I appreciate that we got the ponytail on her rather than a female character who's either a tsundere or has a big chest. Yoruichi is able to make her fully clothed self look even more appealing than when she's half naked, which is an absolute shame that Kubo decided to go with that design afterwards. And the fact that she's able to turn into a cat?? Something that was somehow sidelined after her human form was revealed?? Very very rude.
I also love how she subverts expectations. She's a noble, but she's not prim nor proper, and the one time we see her acting like one is that procession in Soifon's flashback. She's a woman, and yet arguably one of the best fighters in the entire series. Unlike a lot of stereotypical female characters, Yoruichi doesn't just use kicks - she throws hard punches and slaps when she needs to, and uses her entire body. I really love the fluidity of her design that Kubo shows because it makes her so beautiful - and it just combines violence and beauty so well??
Yoruichi also doesn't really give a shit about social conventions either, and that in such a socially stratifying society like Soul Society (too many s's) is so attractive - especially since she's a noble because honestly, what can they do? It's this boldness and rebellion that draws me to her.
And again, her being very queer-coded. I love simping over characters who could very much be queer but aren't written as such - your loss, Kubo, really.
HIRAKO SHINJI
This toothy grinning bastard has captured my attention for some godforsaken reason and I can't figure out why?? Maybe it's his Kansai accent. Maybe it's the fact that his character design is so unconventional and things that normally shouldn't go together did come together and ends up depositing this man onto my lap. It's a strange feeling but Hirako Shinji is definitely up there.
(but also I love myself some long haired men. Why didn't he grow it out again in the TYWB. Why did he get a fucking cravet instead. Go back to the long hair Shinji)
Other characters I love but don't want to write an essay on (yet): Ishida Uryuu, Yadomaru Lisa, Otoribashi Rose, Kyoraku Shunsui, Coyote Starrk, Shutara Senjumaru, Ayasegawa Yumichika (also Shihouin Chika and Saitou Furoufushi, of course)
Please tell me more about your blurbos!! I'm very intrigued on why you love them
#Bleach#Seong speaks#Urahara Kisuke#Shihouin Yoruichi#Hirako Shinji#I used to love Soifon a lot but after her tantrums got worse I liked her less#I mean she's very justified but at the same time hmhmhm#I obviously have a type as you can see#Whatever the heck it is#Someone can try and figure it out#These three are definitely queer coded#Anyways I can ramble more but I need to be more awake#It's currently 3am and I'm very desperate to get some sleep#Asks

That was the funniest fucking thing and really just nailed almost every fanfic of them ever. And the thing is, half that isn’t even that bad. Because they can do all that but why is it always either gross or just never explained? Blossom especially because she can be stressed but who the fuck died and gave her that job when, realistically, she’d have had to fight to be able to have some control over their missions or whatever seeing as she’s both a girl and a child? And then the blues is just something else entirely😭 I will say though, it always confuses me when fanfic authors allow for Boomer to somehow be a genius but then never give Butch that chance? Is it just a quick and easy way to slide in their favorite abusive/dominate the ‘different girl’ trope? It’s also misogynistic in so many ways cause why’s Boomer smart and then Bubbles isn’t if the only reason Brick was made smart was so he’d be a counter to Blossom? Is this just to shove dumb blonde needs saving? Also, enough give me my himbos!! I’m so glad so many of these tropes have slowly started to fade away and here’s to hoping even more follow, especially the reds are gods oh my fucking god if I have to read one more story (that’s usually pretty well written with an intriguing plot!!!) about how sad and lonely and hated Blossom is and how she’s the most powerful ever but also nobody understand except her sworn enemy who she cannot love because of whatever rules she made up, then I’m gonna lose it. I love these losers so much and it sucks seeing some of them in abusive relationships and then seeing the girls especially have to give up so much of themselves and their development just to be with some boys. If anything, the boys would cling to the girls like they’re life support. If they’re gonna turn good, who better to learn from than the goodest™️? Which just opens up a brilliant story of friendships and team building that has lots of plotlines, with one of the main ones being the boys steady journey to turning a new leaf, like with Another Buttercrush and the boys having to ease back in via power restrictions and community service.
I was just nodding my head, reading along, and then you added the stuff about Another Buttercrush and had an "oh shit, I know that story lol" moment. Thank you! I know too much about the law that, realistically, the boys wouldn't be able to escape some kind of punishment for their past actions. Townsville would be stupid for denying the help of three extra super-powered people, but they have to make their citizens believe they have authority over the boys, so boom, power restrictions. That's boiled down politics, bby.
and it takes some of the pressure off the girls. Yeah, the girls would like the boys to be good, but they can't be judge, jury, and executioner. A lot of fanfics leave out how influential Townsville is in the girls' origin story. I believe it would be just as influential in the boys' redemption arc, and it gives the writers a chance to explore the boys outside of the girls and invent new conflicts, like person v society, instead of just person v person.
And if you're able to remove the sets of triplets from each other in this way, this also improves the girls' characters as well. Setting up a person v society conflict would allow fanfic writers to not only show how Townsville affects the boys but also allow you to explore why Blossom would feel stressed out about being a leader or why Bubbles feels the need to be infantilized not just in the context of their personal relationships with the boys, but as individuals.
However, I don't think most ppl come to this fandom for those deep dives into Townsville, and that's fine. Some people strictly want romance, which, like you were saying, anon, can be done in so many different ways that aren't determinantal to the girls or the boys. But until more ppl want that, we aren't going to get much more variety in stories. It's seriously not fun writing for three notes ngl, so I understand why ppl cut/paste the same boring, overdone, and problematic characterizations since those tropes get traction.
Nearly every time I try to write something serious, I have to sit there and remind myself that fanfic isn't literature in the traditional sense. People don't care about themes and plot lines when they're reading it. They care about their fave characters getting what they feel their fave character deserves. And it's a lil' depressing, but at the very least, I know a few people who agree with us!
In sum:

Brick and Jo Should Be a Team in Ridonculous Race Season 2 and Here’s Why
Okay, I know Brick and Jo aren’t the most original idea for a Ridonculous Race team, you can see them in quite a few fan-made RR season two lineups. BUT, I feel like people don’t realize the absolute potential for character development that putting them in another season with the Survivor format simply CANNOT give us. Let me explain.
Now, I should clarify that this is mainly going to serve as an arch for Jo and less for Brick. (Don’t get me wrong, I'm not gonna do my boy dirty. He’s my favorite TD character and I would never want to see him derailed. It’s the only reason I'm able to live with him not being in All Stars.) Brick is pretty well a fully formed person by the end of the 7 episodes he’s featured in. Jo, however, even after placing 5th in Revenge and making it to All Starts, is still a bit confusing. She is hinted at having some deeper characterization, but it doesn’t really go anywhere and her time doesn’t end in a satisfying way. To put it simply: WHILE I WANT FURTHER SCREEN TIME FROM BRICK, JO DESERVES IT MORE.
So, to both satisfy my desire for Brick himbo content and need to give Jo a redemption arch, I present to you: The Jocks.
The Jocks (feel free to offer up an alternative team name) are 1 of 18 teams to enter Don’s new world-wide race for win 1 million dollars. We start of with the same Brick and Jo we left off with, they both want to make everything a competition and are constantly getting up in each other's faces. Jo, predictably, takes the first Botch or Watch and, while she’s busy facing her first challenge, Brick makes a confession to the camera:
HE invited HER to do the show. And, he didn’t just ask because he knows him and Jo would be an absolute power house of a team. He wanted to do the race with her because- cut to Jo coming back and Brick dropping his aside as if it never happened. (Don’t worry, these two are gonna be around for a while. We gotta let this fire burn at it’s own pace and give the early-out teams some screen time before they’re gone. This was just an appetizer, stay patient my child.)
Things are mainly the same until Brick has to do his first Botch or Watch, and Jo is pissed. (This is where the character growth for Jo begins.) In the team confessional, Jo reveals (in her own snarky, framing it as a good thing way) that she isn’t used to depending on others and doesn’t trust Brick to make the same choices she would (her choices all being ones that first and foremost increase her chances of winning). Brick (ever being the good lad we know and love), tries to reaffirm that he’s also here to win. Jo brings up their time on Revenge and his constant need to be a hero. Let them bitch at each other (it’s all apart of the process).
Their next significant interaction happens at an Either / Or that the two cannot agree on. Both are fine at one while Brick holds some sort of strength in the other, and he convinces Jo that he can help her complete it. Little to Brick’s knowledge, Jo straight-up cannot do this challenge and she knows it (give her some type of deep insecurity that is unreasonable for her to overcome quickly, or an allergy, anything that makes it so she can’t finish that particular Either / Or). They get pretty far into Brick’s choice before Jo is willing to admit that she can’t complete it. Brick, while frustrated, is mainly concerned at the fact that he almost made Jo do something she was uncomfortable with / exposed one of her weaknesses. Cut to team confessionals where Brick is once again trying to reaffirm Jo that she can trust him. But, he now makes it more of a demand that Jo, in return, communicate with him. She can make a dismissive comment, crumple-up into herself and pretend to not care about what Brick is saying (again, this is a long haul).
Jo’s second Botch or Watch and Brick’s trying to give her some line of advice. Jo, instead of heading his advice, decided to argue with him, interfering with her completing the challenge. Brick, frustrated, yells something along the lines of “Why can’t you just accept that fact that I'm trying to help you?”. That’s when another team gets involved. One of the other Watchers sees Brick’s frustration and gives him a much needed reality check: he cannot help Jo if she is unwilling to accept it. They talk long enough for Jo to notice and she gets upset. Team confessional time and Jo is making it very clear that they are NOT open to making alliances. Brick, starting to stick up for himself more and more, let’s Jo know that he ISN’T a pawn for her to control and, as always, is questioning her reason for doubting him and his intentions. Jo, just as before, does not have an answer for this, or, at least, isn’t willing to admit to one.
Next Either / Or or All In and Brick has formed somewhat of a friendship with the person who reached out to him during the last Botch or Watch. This challenge is a bit more slow (something along the lines of picking tea leaves in India) and the two have the opportunity to talk more. Have the other person ask Brick WHY he puts up with Jo’s constant nagging and belittling of him. At first, he chose to engage in her competitiveness because Brick does enjoy the thrill of having a rival. (Don’t forget that he admits to seeing Jo as his greatest competition and is just as responsible for how far their discourse goes. Brick is competitive. We shouldn’t forget that these two have a lot in common, the main thing that separates them are their senses of morality / the limits they are willing to go to. Let’s not act as if Brick’s a total victim of Jo’s antics.) But, after hearing one-too-many insecure comments from Jo on TDRI, Brick started to feel bad for her. And, after the competition, Brick found out that- and here’s Jo, back again to stall her own character exposition (last time, I swear).
The climax of this plot line would come in Brick’s second Botch or Watch and the boy is struggling. It’s taken a long time and Jo is frustrated to the point where she’s ready to finish the challenge herself. Brick, for both the obvious reason of not wanting to take the penalty and believing that he can complete it, doesn’t want that. She lets him take a few more cracks at it, but after one of the “lower ranking” teams shows up, Jo takes things into her own hands and finishes the Botch or Watch herself. Brick bickers at her about the penalty until they make it to the Carpet of Completion. After being given the penalty, Jo tries to convince Brick that it won’t matter because the other teams are far behind. However, as the time goes by and more teams make it to the Chill Zone, Jo starts to get nervous and tries to shift the blame to her teammate. She thinks that if Brick had just LET her do the Botch or Watch EARLIER, the Penalty Clock would have run out by now and they wouldn’t be in danger of elimination. This makes his angry, for obvious reasons, and argues that she should have let him finish his Botch or Watch. He’s confident that they would have been able to out run the rest of the teams behind them if it came down to it.
Now, obviously, both of them think they’re right and, considering their argument are based on hypotheticals, neither of them can prove anything. But, they still have time on the clock and Don’s not going to stop them from arguing, so, they keep going at it. Eventually, Jo tells Brick that, if they get eliminated, she’s never going to talk to him again and THIS is what makes him crack. (Brick has been a very good boy and teammate up until this point, he has earned the right to reasonably upset with Jo.) As it turns out, Brick, some time after All Stars, tried to reach out to Jo after seeing her being put on the Villainous Vultures. (While he doesn’t think Jo is the best person, he does overall feel bad for her and thinks labeling her as a villain is too much.) Instead of getting her though, he got some form of parent or sibling and they where ELATED that Jo has a “friend” calling. She can’t take the phone right now but the family member is VERY excited and asks Brick all kinds of questions, guaranteeing him that Jo WILL call her back. But, that never happened, and when he tries to call again, he gets the same family member talking about how they’re so happy that Jo’s been talking and hanging out with him. Basically, she’s been lying to this family member and Brick realizes that the only way he’s going to get a hold of Jo is if they’re together in real life. So, he fudges up the idea that he and Jo have agreed on doing the second season of Ridonculous Race. And, as he expected, this gets back to her and she accepts to do it (1. it’s a competition, of course she’s going to say yes and 2. she doesn’t want to admit to lying to her family). (In practice, the last part doesn’t need to be explained in show. That’s just me providing exposition to anyone reading this that is questioning how this situation leads them doing RR together. I’m not saying it’s perfect. I’m an amateur writer so if that sounds stupid and it sucks, sorry.)
In summary, the point of Brick’s rant is that he finds it RICH that JO is threatening HIM with abandonment. She isn’t necessarily in a place where she can make that choice without isolating herself. Brick finds it frustrating that Jo would choose to push him away when he’s been nothing but loyal and has made it very clear that he cares about her. But, before Jo can get in a coherent reply, the last team makes it across the Carpet of Completion and Don interrupts them. “Jocks, I am very disappointed in you. This show is about teamwork and trusting the other in their abilities. I wish you both the best of luck in learning that lesson... IN THE NEXT EPISODE, BECAUSE THIS IS A NON-ELIMANATION ROUND! YOU GET TO STAY!” (Because fuck you, their story isn’t over yet.)
Next episode and the Jocks leave last, cut to team confessional where Jo is basically trying to ignore the last episode ever happened. And, surprisingly, Brick is okay with letting that drama go... granted that Jo be cooperative. He isn’t going to let her get away with pushing him around or away, and he proves it to her in the next All In. Jo immediately goes to lead the way in a manner that includes not communicating with her partner and fucking other people over to get ahead. (She’s been doing this but it’s been less important in comparison to the trust thing up until this point.) And Brick, having decided after last episode that he isn’t going to put up with her shit, demands that Jo tell him what her plan is instead of having her drag him into it. She thinks this is a waste of time, after all, they need to get out of last place and Jo is very good at winning, so it shouldn’t matter what her plan is (just think of how many times she was responsible for her team winning in TDRI). However, Brick is sticking to his word and, upon Jo’s show of stubbornness, decides to sit down and refuse to budge until Jo does.
From here on out, if Jo wants to be disagreeable, she is going to have to LITERALLY DRAG BRICK’S ASS ALONG. This is where the game setup of Ridonculous Race serves much more to a Jo redemption plot line than the traditional Total Drama format. In the Survivor inspired format, Jo could just get rid of Brick or anyone who didn’t comply with her “my way or the highway” attitude. All she needed to do in Total Drama was give her team enough incentive to not vote her off (like, you know, winning her team challenge after challenge. Seriously, theirs a reason she was able get away with being super unlikable and make it past the merge.) Before, she COULD go it alone and still stand a chance at winning. But, NOW she’s competing with a PERMANENT alliance. She can’t just throw Brick away without also losing her chance at winning, forcing Jo to either 1. cooperate in order to win, making her to grow as a person or 2. compromise with her competitive nature and give up.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t think Jo’s going to choose option number 2. I’m going to go with her reluctantly agreeing and slowly realizing that working WITH Brick and not against him is going to save her time and stress in the long run. And, now that more and more strain is coming off of their relationship, the Jock dynamic has more chance to grow into something more than just a rivalry. (Yes, I am going to be taking this down the shipping route... but the rest of this isn’t just going to be a cheesy fanfiction. I'm trying to write this from a more realistic stand point, this post does not end with them winning and heavily making out. Sorry if that’s what you where hoping for.)
As the episodes go on, Jo get’s better at being more open and communicating without the need for Brick to pry it out of her. Maybe she learns to accept and pay back compliments (because holy fucking shit, does no-one talk about this bitch being unable to process kindness in a genuine way). Hell, put in a filler clip of them sitting / sleeping on the plane closer together (contrast it with an earlier episode having filler clips that shows the opposite), because I'm a slut for little details like that. Make them become an actual team. Keep the competitiveness between them, make it more about small things that don’t have high stakes to them. Let it be more playful, give them both more flustered reactions to each others teasing and constant touching of each other (yes, they’re still doing that. These two are both awkward touch deprived idiots and you cannot tell me other wise.)
Sorry for not really having an episode by episode guide for the past bit, but I don’t feel like writing that because 1. this post is gonna be long enough without it and 2. intimacy scares me and I don’t know how to right it without me spending a week just on one paragraph. BUT, I DO have an outline for their elimination episode (like I said, they ain’t winning this one. I have no plans on who they would compete against, but, the Jock’s are not beating them.) And, you guessed it, it’s Botch or Watch time. Brick’s back up on the chopping block and we’re bringing back an old friend: A DARK, CRAMPED CAVE.
Yup, we’re gonna shove this sweet boy BACK into a pitch-black void, and he’s going to deny Jo the chance to do it instead, because he’s a dauntless dumbass that’s determined to prove himself to his girlfriend teammate. And Jo’s okay with that because “she believes in him” (not really, she’s counting on him finishing the challenge by running out screaming and smelling of piss. Jo’s just trying to be supportive in hopes that she can extend the amount of time Brick has before his false sense of confidence wares off.) But, since this is a more dangerous challenge and the Botchers are completely out of sight, the Watchers get walkie-talkies to communicate with their teammates (think of Bahamarama).
So, Brick’s not doing too hot (for obvious reasons), but Jo’s talking him through it and she thinks he’s gonna pull this off. The problem comes when his walkie-talkie stops working / get destroyed, so now he’s stuck in a pitch dark cave without Jo’s voice to distract him from having a panic attack. Don says they can’t really do anything until a certain amount of time passes / they can prove Brick’s in immediate danger. However, Jo ain’t having that shit, so she steals a flashlight and heads in (NOT because she’s worried about losing, but because she KNOWS Brick is absolutely LOSING HIS MIND. Character development, people.) She goes in and finds Brick (not that is should be hard, he’s screaming for help and smells like fresh pee). Insert whatever in-the-dark antics the producers want to put in for two embarrassed young people that are into each other.
Anyways, the two make it out and after speed running whatever the rest of this challenge is, they make it to the Carpet of completion. The last team is right behind them and as that team goes to grieve at their loss, Don interrupts them, “Because Jo went into the cave during Brick’s Botch-or-Watch, the Jock’s technically have a time penalty. Meaning: team x, YOU are in (x) place and continue onto the next round!” Jo tries to argue but Brick pulls her in for a hug and tries to give her a nice little inspirations speech about how they did they’re best and that he’s proud of her (yada yada, I'm not writing that. I’ve spend enough time on this shit already.) And she accepts it...until she realizes that Brick smells like piss and pushes him away (because crush or no crush, that’s gross and your boy needs to take a shower). Run the montage thing they do, Brick’s happy with himself, Jo’s salty about losing but admits that she “learned something from this” and tells Brick that she “just might give him a call when she get’s home”. He probably says something subtle and sweet to try and hint that he likes her but instead of responding like a normal person, Jo bets that she can find the best way back to Canada before he can (or some other shit, it doesn’t matter. The point is that she’s not ready to admit anything and would rather throw another obstacle at her feelings than confront them. Jo’s still Jo, the point was not to completely rearrange her personality and make her a hopeless romantic.)
So, yeah, that’s the end of the Jocks’ time on Ridonculous Race. Overall, ide imagine they placed anywhere from 7th-4th (this is just an idea, the exact placement decision would be up to anyone actually writing this season.) It starts off with their classic frenemy dynamic from TDRI and ends with a blooming romance between two forlorn meatheads. I hope I wrote this in a way that portrays my desire to maintain character integrity, I didn’t want this to just sound like some out-of-reach fanfiction. The goal was to make a plot line that Fresh TV could actually write without derailing these characters.
Honestly, this wouldn’t get out of head until I wrote it, and, I might as well send it out into the rest of Total Drama Tumblr (also gonna post screenshots on r/TotalDrama, hi Reddit) for anyone who might like it. Again, I am NOT an experienced writer, but I do need to start putting my work out their so this is as good of a start as any.
Thank you for reading the entirety of this garbage fire. If it brought you some joy or inspiration, please let me know and validate what little self esteem I have. Have a great, morning, day, night or whatever the fuck else. Farewell friends!

most wanted summer alt(guys included)?
AH i knew i'd forgotten something!
My joke from last time aside, because if I named all of them i'd be here for another 3 weeks, there are 3 big ones.
Avenger Medea, as previously discussed, with an Argo Cruise Ship summer vacation that gives us Jason's Okeanos outfit and Lancer Peleus, Foreigner Orpheus, Rider Circe, a teaser of Caster Penelope, and Pretender/Ruler Jason who is STILL a dedicated Argo support servant but is now a really good one and not a one off gimmick. The villains are the Boreads and you have new allies in Aello, Ocypete, and Calaeno, as well as who else but Medea as the welfare.
Hundred Faced Hassan, who's having an identity crisis and has to come to terms with her DID and sense of self and its blatantly not a gag event but a very serious one because they fucked her out of any chance of real characterization in both Zero and the main story so damnit someone has to do it. The villain is some new Foreigner like Hastur or Shub Niggurath fully formed and the parallel of 1000 young to the 100 personas as you effectively have to go around meeting all these various identities that were a part of Hundred Face Hassan, and also we get Predator Scuba Gramps.
Rider Caesar, but he's played completely straight. Like he's a massive himbo who doesn't even realize he's in a gag event and very seriously thinking he has to save everyone and very egotistical but also too stupid to be mean. Just absolutely PEAK himbo with just enough narcissism to give him room for character development and make his genuine love for Cleo meaningful. He's as ripped and half naked as Summer Gawain but all his skills and even his NP are completely serious, and the costumes are instead the 3 outfits of what he SHOULD look like. The only female swimsuit the entire cast is Summer Cleopatra and it's still only a costume, and the only returning summer servant is Summer Caeneus. All the others are male swimsuits, the reason being Rider Caesar is so OP he broke the game into allowing male swimsuits. The villain or the welfare is my Pretender Brutus i've talked about.
#fgo#fgo au#writing shit#never thought i'd get an ask#summer 7#yes i do have a followup to the Argo idea yes thats what I meant by teaser#fate grand order#fate medea#fgo caesar#hassan of the hundred faces#jason and the argonauts

@bananahkim replied ; yes.
Ok ( mentions of abuse warning )
I want to develope this small lil oc story a bit more, but this is all I have for now.
So basically, the main character of it is a 22 year old guitarist named Harley ( They/He pronouns. ) I talked about them once here and then never spoke about them again.. but in his childhood, Harley was experimented on by his scientist father, and because of these experiments – he developed monster-like qualities though he's learnt to hide them well enough, and they usually only come out when they're scared or angered. He just wants to live a normal life and despises his past.
They have two friends? Partners? I haven't decided, named Honey ( She/Her ) and Craig ( He/Him ), who like him, also suffered from abusive pasts ( Honey's was physical and Craig's was verbal. ) They all find a comfort in each other, and these two are the reason Harley's in a slightly better place today.
Harley is sarcastic and a bit bitchy at times, but he cares a lot more than people would think. Honey is a saint, as described by Harley, she's incredibly kind and always willing to give second, third and fourth chances.. well, that's one thing he doesn't like about her, she's way too forgiving. Craig's a bit of a himbo, but that's fine, he can be a bit dumb but he means well mostly.
The main premise is about Harley, Honey and Craig finding an abused girl running from home, and taking her in.. Harley swears he won't get attached, they'll just hand her off to a police station, or an orphanage, or something like that.. he won't get attached- he won't - he gets attached. She reminds me so much of him when he was younger, and he becomes the parental figure he needed when he was younger.
It's basically one big found family story, because I'm a softie. I haven't decided on the little girl's name yet, but I'm thinking her parents didn't name her, and Honey maybe gives her a name? Maybe something like Lulu or Lily? Something cute like that. They're a family :')
Aand that's probably about it? I didn't go too much into fun facts about the characters because then this post would be too long, and I just wanted to explain basic plot stuff, but if anyone wants me to then maybe I could make a separate post.
#oc tag#shit this is long srry if its confusing im trying 😭#this is rushed as hell#i have more oc stories but this is the only one i feel like talking about rn

Top Ten Historical Figures Done Dirty by The Terror (2018)
So, we all know and love Dave Kajganich and Soo Hugh’s beautiful show, right? Of course. But it’s important to set the historical record straight, especially when there are real people’s life-stories and legacies on the line.
(NOTE: this list is biased heavily toward upper-class individuals because the historical record does a better job preserving those voices for us. Was the real Cornelius Hickey as nasty a person in real life as he was in the show? Almost certainly not – which is why we’re given “E.C.” as a nod to the fact that we shouldn’t assume these characters represent real historical villains, even when the narrative makes them antagonists; HOWEVER, not everyone in the show was given the same courtesy as the OG “Cornelius Hickey.” Which is why this post exists – to show you the best sides of some people you might not otherwise appreciate for their full humanity. That being said, keep in mind the sources used – and, for instance, who has surviving portraits and who doesn’t.)
Thus, below the cut, I give you this list, (mostly) in order from #10 (honorable mention, only somewhat slandered) to #1 (most hideously maligned) – my list of characters from The Terror who deserved better.
(Please don’t take this too seriously – I know there are reasons why choices had to be made in order to make this show work on television, and I do very much love the end product. But I also genuinely think it’s a good idea to remember the real people behind these characters, and think critically about how we depict them ourselves.)
Bottom Tier – The Overlooked Men of the Franklin Expedition
#10. Richard Wall – & – John Diggle
We’re combining these two because they had a lot in common, historically speaking! Both were polar veterans, having served as a Cook (Wall) and an AB-then-Quartermaster (Diggle) on HMS Erebus under the command of Sir James Clark Ross in the Antarctic expedition of 1839-1843. Certainly we do get some good scenes with them in the show, but there was plenty more to explore there – for instance, Captain Ross was apparently so taken with Richard Wall that he hired him on as a private cook after the Antarctic expedition. (One imagines that Sir James may have regretted letting his friends of the Franklin expedition steal Wall out from under him.)
(If you want some more information on Diggle, the brilliant @handfuloftime found this excellent article on him – fun facts include the detail that Diggle’s only daughter bore the name Mary Ann Erebus Diggle.)
#9. John Smart Peddie
Now, I don’t think we should go as far as the Doctor Who Audio Drama adaptation of the Franklin Expedition, which makes Peddie into Francis Crozier’s oldest friend, someone “almost like a brother” to Crozier (no evidence of ANY prior relationship between the two existed, contrary to whatever the Doctor Who Audio Dramas would have you believe!) but Peddie probably earned his place as chief surgeon, however fond we may all be of the beautiful Alex “Macca” MacDonald, who was, in fact, the Assistant Surgeon, historically speaking. It’s hard to find information about Peddie, but someone should go looking! I want to know about this man!
(If you want to know more about the historical Alexander MacDonald, there’s a short biographical article on him from Arctic that you can read here.)
#8 James Walter Fairholme
The only one of the expedition’s lieutenants who doesn’t really get any characterization in the show, which is a travesty! The historical Fairholme (pronounced “Fairem”) was, as they say, a himbo, and the letters that he wrote home to his father are positively precious. He loved the expedition pets (lots of kisses for Neptune!), and he needed two kayaks because he couldn’t fit into just one with his beefy thighs. Fitzjames loaned him a coat when all the Erebus officers had their portraits taken, and then called him a “smart, agreeable companion, and a well informed man,” and Goodsir singled Fairholme out as “very much interested” in the work of naturalist observations. Just a lovely young man who could have gotten some screen time, you know?
(Also, as @transblanky discovered, four separate members of the Fairholme family gave money to Thomas Blanky’s widow when she was struggling financially in the 1850s, making them, combined, the most generous contributor to her subscription.)
Middle Tier – Franklin’s Men Who Didn’t Deserve That
#7. William Gibson
Alright, I want to talk about how uniquely horrible the show’s William Gibson is: this is a character willing to lie and accuse his partner of sexual assault that didn’t happen. I get there were extenuating circumstances, but if I were a historical figure who died in some famous disaster and someone depicted me doing something like that? Let’s just say I’m deeply offended on the real Gibson’s behalf.
What do we know about the historical William Gibson? Not much – but we know a little. Gibson’s younger brother served on an overland exploratory venture across Australia in the 1870s… from which he never returned. (God, the Gibson family had the worst luck?) This description of a conversation that young Alf Gibson had with expedition leader Ernest Giles only days before his death is VERY eerie:
[Gibson] said, “Oh! I had a brother who died with Franklin at the North Pole, and my father had a deal of trouble to get his pay from government.” He seemed in a very jocular vein this morning, which was not often the case, for he was usually rather sulky, sometimes for days together, and he said, “How is it, that in all these exploring expeditions a lot of people go and die?”
I said, “I don't know, Gibson, how it is, but there are many dangers in exploring, besides accidents and attacks from the natives, that may at any time cause the death of some of the people engaged in it; but I believe want of judgment, or knowledge, or courage in individuals, often brought about their deaths. Death, however, is a thing that must occur to every one sooner or later.”
To this he replied, “Well, I shouldn't like to die in this part of the country, anyhow.” In this sentiment I quite agreed with him, and the subject dropped.
(From Giles’s Australia Twice Traversed which you can read here)
Beyond that, one thing we do know is that William Gibson was probably friends with Henry Peglar – they had served on ships together before, and Gibson may possibly have been the poor fellow found cradling the Peglar Papers, according to researcher Glenn Stein. So we might imagine the historical Gibson as a much kinder man than the show’s depiction of him – this was someone who befriended the clever, playful Peglar we all know and love from the transcriptions of his papers, so full of poetry and linguistic jokes. It’s a shame we didn’t get a chance to meet this real Gibson, who actually knew the Henry Peglar whom we love so well.
#6. Stephen Stanley
Look. There’s that one famous line in James Fitzjames’s letters to the Coninghams about how Stanley went about with his “shirt sleeves tucked up, giving one unpleasant ideas that he would not mind cutting one’s leg off immediately – ‘if not sooner.’” And certainly Harry Goodsir had some mixed opinions of the man, saying was “a would be great man who as I first supposed would not make any effort at work after a time,” and that he “knows nothing whatever about subject & is ignorant enough of all other subjects,” whatever…. that means….
But Fitzjames also had some rather nicer things to say about him, that he was “thoroughly good natured and obliging and very attentive to our mess.” Also, the amputation comment? Very likely had a quite positive underlying joke to it – Stanley may not have been much of a naturalist, but he was actually an accomplished anatomist, who won a prize for dissection in 1836, on account of his “bend of the elbow,” which was “a picture of dissection,” according to Henry Lonsdale, who also called Stanley his “facetious friend” and “a fine fellow” (Lonsdale 1870, pg. 159). So, the real Stanley probably was rather droll, but the perpetually cruel Stanley of the show misses some of the real man’s major historical virtues and replaces them with historically unlikely mass-mercy-murder.
#5. John Irving
Now we’re getting into the territory of characters who did get some good development, but are missing a bit of historical nuance. As I’m sure many of you know, the historical Irving was indeed very religious, but the flashes of anger (i.e. against Manson) we see from Irving in the show don’t seem terribly consistent with the Irving depicted in this memorial volume, where John seems more like a quiet, bookish, mathematically inclined young man, with a self-deprecating sense of humor and a gentle sweetness. It’s really not at all far off from the version of Irving we see with Kooveyook in the show – I just wish we could have seen more of that side of Irving.
Top Tier – The Triumvirate of Polar Friends
So, these three DO have many good things to recommend them in the show, but because I’ve done such deep research on them, it can be quite jarring to watch certain scenes in which they behave contrary to their historical personalities, and I find myself pausing when watching the show with friends or family to explain that NO, they wouldn’t do that!
#4. Sir James Clark Ross
First thing – we LOVE Richard Sutton. He did a beautiful job with the material given to him. (This is true of all the actors on the list, frankly, but it’s doubly true here.) But that scene at the Admiralty where Sir James tells Lady Franklin “I have many friends on those ships, as you know,” to shut down her argument for search missions? At that time (aka 1847), historically, Sir James Clark Ross was actively campaigning for search missions, planning routes and volunteering his services in command of any vessel the Admiralty even vaguely contemplated sending out. You could see this real-life desperation in Sir James’s morose attention to his whiskey glass in that scene if you’re really trying, but I think the more historically responsible thing would have been to make vividly clear that James Ross risked life and limb, as soon as he possibly could, to try to rescue Franklin and Crozier and Blanky, men he’d known and cared about and bitterly missed – and, in the case of Crozier, “truly loved.”
#3. Sir John Franklin
The historical Franklin had plenty of flaws – his contributions to British colonial rule certainly harmed no small number of people, and we should question the way that heroic statues of Franklin are some of the only memorials that serve to honor the lives lost on Franklin’s expeditions – especially considering the steep body count of not only Franklin’s final voyage, but his previous missions in Arctic regions as well. (DM me and I’ll scream at you about counter-monuments! Is this a promise or a threat? Who knows!) With that said, most contemporary accounts agree that Sir John Franklin treated his friends, his family, and those within his social orbit with kindness, and his cruelties were systemic, not personal. In this light, the image of Sir John viciously tearing into Francis Crozier’s vulnerabilities in the show feels very off. Though there was certainly some friction over Crozier’s two proposals to Sophia Cracroft, historically speaking, there’s no evidence at all that Sir John discouraged her from marrying Francis – Sophia may have had many reasons of her own (*clears throat meaningfully in a lesbian sort of way*) for not accepting any of the several marriage proposals offered to her (from Crozier as well as from others), and we ought to keep in mind that she remained unmarried all her life. The notion that the real Sir John would have considered Crozier too low-born or too Irish to be part of the Franklin family isn’t grounded in historical fact.
#2. Lady Jane Franklin
Again disclaimer: the real Lady Franklin left behind a legacy with much to critique. Those who rightfully point out the racism of her treatment of the young indigenous Tasmanian girl Mathinna should be fully heard out. Observations of her own contributions to imperialism are important and valid. Though I tend to see her feud with Dr. John Rae as somewhat understandable – given that Lady Franklin didn’t have the benefit of our hindsight knowing Rae was correct – the levels of prejudice that she enabled and even encouraged in the writing of Charles Dickens when he attempted to discredit Inuit accounts of Franklin’s fate are inarguably deplorable. These things being said, everything noted for Sir John re: Sophia Cracroft goes for Lady Franklin as well – there’s no reason to imagine a scene where Jane would bully Francis Crozier within an inch of his life, seconds after a failed second proposal, when, historically, Lady Franklin felt the situation was so delicate that it required the quiet and compassionate intervention of Sir James Clark Ross, a dearly loved mutual friend to all parties. Tension does not imply aggression; conflict is not abuse. We know this can’t have been an easy experience for the historical Francis Crozier, but the picture is a lot more complicated than what can be shown in one small subplot of a ten-episode television show. Because of this complexity, however, Lady Franklin’s social deftness suffers in the show. (I could also write an entire essay about Jane Franklin’s last shot in the show, at the beginning of Episode 9: The C the C the Open C – TL;DR is that framing is very important, and, at the very last moment, the show reframes Lady Franklin as a mutilated corpse, a speaking mouth without a brain, which is….. a choice.)
And, at number 1, the person done most dirty by The Terror (2018) is….
#1. Charles Frederick “Freddy” Des Voeux
Look. I’m biased here because I am fed daily information about the historical Freddy Des Voeux from @frederickdesvoeux so I’ve become, I think understandably, a bit attached.
But this is very plainly the clearest cruelty the show does to a historical figure – the historical Des Voeux was a very young man (only around 20 when the ships set sail) known always as “Frederick or Freddy” to his family, and described by all parties as bright and sweet – Fitzjames said that he was “a most unexceptionable, clever, agreeable, light-hearted, obliging young fellow, and a great favourite of Hodgson’s, which is much in his favour besides,” and described him cheerfully helping to catch specimens for Goodsir. Des Voeux is named “dear” by Captain Osborn in Erasmus Henry Brodie’s 1866 poem on the Franklin Expedition (43) and Leo McClintock reported the young man’s well-known “intelligence, gallantry, and zeal” in his 1869 update to his account of the Franklin Expedition’s fate (xlii). None of this is consistent with Des Voeux’s behaviour in the show, especially in the later episodes.
To reduce Des Voeux to an easily-detested figure, over whose death one might cheer, is not a kindness – the creation of a narrative where his death is satisfying does damage to the memory of a real person, a barely-more-than-teenager who died in the cold of the Arctic and left behind only scraps of a shirt and a spidery signature in the bottom margin of a fragmentary document.
Television shows may need their villains, but it’s important to remember that real life isn’t like that. Surely the historical Frederick Des Voeux was most likely not a perfect person, and, as an upper class officer contributing to a British imperial project, he does bear some responsibility for the harm done by the Franklin expedition, but it’s not accurate to assume he was any less worthy of sympathy than the other officers who considered him a friend – those men whom we now venerate, like James Fitzjames. So as far as I’m concerned, Freddy Des Voeux deserves at least as much consideration, care, and compassion from us.

On Buddie and them potentially being aware of their feelings
So we definitely see evidence of how Eddie might feel about Buck, how he clearly loves and trusts him. He absolutely relies on Buck a lot as someone who loves Christopher, as that person you go to who cares about your kid as much as you do. And he clearly doesn’t handle not having Buck around very well during the storyline that must not be named.
He also looks at Buck like “you’re lucky you’re pretty”, a LOT. And he’s shown to think about Buck’s wellbeing and Buck’s feelings. For a guy who’s not usually great at ~the talking~, he seems to sense that Buck needs to hear him actually *say* things like that he trusts him, out loud. For Buck, someone who’s been told that he’s reckless and impulsive, not diligent, not reliable (and to be fair to Bobby, has been all those things at times, but is desperate to change that view of himself), to be told that he’s trusted - more than anyone else - with someone’s kid? That’s huge. And Eddie knew that he needed to hear that, he also knew that he needed to feel like part of something when Buck was depressed and hanging around at home after the truck bombing. And Eddie was the one who noticed Buck wasn’t around at the station. For Eddie, the fact that they “have each other’s backs” is so important, because, and it’s insane how this is not wishful thinking on the fandom’s part, he actually tells Shannon that she doesn’t have his back. So yeah, absolutely nobody is disputing that Eddie loves Buck.
And I’ve talked about how I believe that Eddie might be bi leaning towards more into men than women (his “not my type” and aunt pepa’s reaction to buck are the foundation for this theory), and his particular combination of upbringing, experience and location really messing with him admitting that to himself (Conservative religious culture, Texas, army, getting married young because of outside expectations). But many of the scenes we get from him could - FROM THE OUTSIDE - very well just show a guy who has a lot of love and respect (and occasionally some fond exasperation) for his best friend. Possibly more, but not in that active, pining way. Not like he’s truly aware of it, yet.
But Buck? He pretty much always looks at Eddie like he’s the best thing that has happened to him, ever, and he can’t believe his luck of getting to be around this man. The smile he constantly gives him, and - in seasons 2 and 3 - only him, is the actual “I want to sleep with you smile” from season 1 Buck. I don’t make the rules.
He constantly finds ways to help him out, reads up on things he knows Eddie is interested in or things that are for some reason something Eddie is dealing with (whether it’s baseball biographies or summer camp brochures), and absolutely always looks to him for approval anytime he does something well or remotely badass. Or even when he makes a joke. It’s almost like 95% of the stuff he does, he does so that Eddie will see.
He sees himself as part of Eddie’s family to the point of not feeling like he’s a guest at their house, he has proven he would actually die for Chris, and he spends much of his free time finding ways of making Chris, the most important person in Eddie’s life, happy. He shares in both the happy and the difficult parts of raising Chris, he gets involved in school problems, and he’s there for Eddie to talk through all the little things that come up when you’re a parent. Often times, with single parents, when the other parent isn’t around, the problem is that there’s nobody else in your life who shares the same love and enthusiasm or worry you have for your child. You could talk about everything relating to them for hours, but even the best meaning friends will at some point reach the limit of how interested they are. Not so with Buck.
But unlike Eddie, Buck is also aware, to a point, of how much he’s focused on Eddie. Where Eddie’s jealousy comes across as more spur-of-the-moment, not something he’s even aware of, Buck seems like.. he’s thought about how he feels about Eddie. Others definitely have. Maddie’s comment about his “man crush” aside, even a random christmas elf (long may she live) comments on it. Hen and Karen immediately agree Buck would invite Eddie, like, Karen knows about this even. Their reaction when Buck is acting irrational over how they might get Eddie out when he’s buried alive and most likely dead already is that reaction of “Oh fuck, this will break this person” that is usually reserved for the significant other or parent. Bobby definitely reacts to Buck in relation to Eddie the way a father would, carefully weighing being amused at how obvious he’s being, and concern over not wanting him to get hurt doing something stupid trying to save Eddie, or by falling for him when it might not be reciprocated. They all know that Buck’s a little (more than) smitten with Eddie. And Buck... of course he’s going to notice how his friends and family react. I think he’s been aware of it for a while and is constantly trying to navigate and balance this.
Of course he hasn’t told his face about balancing anything at all yet, because look at that man’s face any time he looks at Eddie, look at that scene with the medal. He absolutely can’t help it. And sometimes it’s like he wants them to pick up on it - for example, pushing Maddie on the fact that he doesn’t consider himself a guest. And that’s completely understandable, sometimes you want people to pick up on something and maybe even comment on it (because their reaction reaffirms to you that maybe you’re not crazy) while also not wanting attention on that point. People are complicated like that. And Buck may be a himbo, but he’s complicated AF.
We get Buck being really weird about Eddie and Shannon in general - right off the bat. When Shannon shows up at the station and she and Eddie talk, Buck’s in the background and overhears that they’re sleeping together. He clearly struggles with this information, (and Chim possibly notices..) then he get’s real petty about them potentially getting married again (”Maybe you can get a discount”) - and he nopes out of the situation as quickly as he can - because he doesn’t want to risk saying anything snarky.
Then Chim and Buck go christmas tree shopping, and Chim comments on how Buck can’t let Eddie’s situation with Shannon go, and it’s true, he can’t stop himself. But when Eddie asks him for advice in front of the fountain (/metaphorical water penis as I like to call it), he’s suddenly all “I didn’t think it was my business” ... ok, sure, Buck. Then he basically tells Eddie to try and make it work with Shannon. In terms of character development, in a romance, this is the part where person A wants to be with person B but doesn’t think they have a chance, so makes the choice to try and settle for being their friend, which, heartbreakingly, involves pushing them into the arms of someone else.
Also, his kind of “oversharing” of Eddie’s situation with Ana to the rest of the team is, to me, a pretty clear indicator that the topic makes him uncomfortable and he’s trying a Ross Geller-I’m making Fajitas- “let’s show everyone how very completely normal I feel about this” approach, which.. it doesn’t.. work that well. And when does this ever work, it’s super easy to see through this, and it usually just serves to draw more attention to the fact that you’re uncomfortable with whatever is being discussed.
Buck also takes everything Eddie says to heart. Like, fucking takes it and will not let go of it. Half a season after Eddie tells him that he makes everything about himself, he breaks down telling Maddie he’s worried he’s making the situation with the old firefighter about himself again. During the kitchen scene (or “The actual how-to-guide of what to do when you thought the guy you have a crush on doesn’t reciprocate but then you have a fight and he really doesn’t handle being away from you so well so you kind of might as well see where being a little more openly flirty will get you”), Buck’s clearly thought about Eddie’s words from the grocery store fight, and he’s gonna call Eddie out. And maybe do other stuff.
Looking at what the writers are actually doing, to end the season, there’s the clawing at dirt of it all, Buck falling apart when Eddie’s buried alive. Buck being in almost all of Eddie’s memories when he’s close to dying. And Maddie’s comment about not wanting to set Josh up with Buck, which is innocent enough, but why throw that in on top of all of the above, if not because maybe what we’re actually looking at is that they’re setting up a sexuality crisis for Buck, and him realizing he’s maybe into Eddie, but Eddie not actually reciprocating (yet)? And say Buck is then somehow forcefully pushed to see the truth about how he feels, maybe by, i don’t know, coming across TK and/or Carlos on a call, and one of them asking him how long him and Eddie have been together? We might get Eddie with Ana, and a very long, drawn out process of Buck realizing what’s happening and trying to leave them alone, and Eddie being really confused about why Buck’s being like that. Then we would have two options (well, more, really, but these are two I like): 1) Eddie pushing Buck on that point and demanding an explanation and Buck just coming out with it because fuck it and sorry and please let me see Chris still 2) Buck’s sexuality crisis (or not crisis, if he’s always been pan/bi, which, look, nothing I’ve seen has disproven this theory) leading to him dating a guy and Eddie getting really jealous but not actually being aware of the fact what he feels is jealousy (because he doesn’t realize how he feels about Buck, see this whole essay you just read), and Buck being the one who confronts Eddie about why he’s being such a homophobic asshole about this, and Eddie straight up kissing him because he can’t not anymore.

so I recently read through your "Always a hero"-works. And now I am hooked on LfM. And while Adrien Seems so much different from canon, he really isn't? Marinette not being in his "friends-folder" means he sees no reason believing her over Chloe. (I cannot recall situations like that in canon but when does canon explore sidecharas much other than to akumatize them)
It essentially is canon Adrien, though been focusing on his worst aspects as we’re going into 4 seasons, and those issues have yet to be addressed and I’m a tad salty and LfM is a salt fic response fic. And Adrien for a while will have that salty focus. Largely because
And yeah, canon won’t put focus on side characters (or even truly focus on our lead herself) as those characters have to circle around the love square, their akumas, or
Actually the most we got is Chloe.
She got focus outside Adrien and the love square. Unfortunately, all her focus was a big waste of our time and essentially another tease of “is she going to be redeemed or not”. Ultimately not and its like, why even bother spending two seasons focusing on will she won’t she be better. That could’ve been shortened down to one. Now she’s a very irritating character and canon wise, I don’t want to see her with another miraculous ever again.
Which is a shame as I was one of many up to see Chloe redeemed, especially since I’m fed up with the idea that 14 yos girls are irredeemable but Gabriel will probably be redeemed. It shouldn’t be like that for Chloe or Lila. But they want to push that these girls are absolutely evil, more so than the active terrorist who is a neglectful father and by Chat Blanc abusive so...
It’s also a big shame cause there was so much potential in the side characters outside love square and Adrien.
Putting this under cut cause I just go off and it gets lenthy.
Alya could’ve had an amazing arc if she was a full time hero. Could’ve had a struggle of balancing her hero and civilian lives, as one she is essentially living her dream. Another option is learning, hey, being a hero isn’t all glory and glamour. And depending on the miraculous, there was more to learn, especially since I myself am not big on her having Fox anymore and there are better alternatives, both in matching her but also teaching her things she needs to learn. She could learn to be more of a team player and to be more conscious of her friends as when she gets going in her goals, she can be quite inconsiderate. She can also learn to be more self conscious of her own security as she can rival Adrien in reckless behavior around akumas. And in truth, any miraculous can teach her the importance of secrecy, not Fox exclusively.
Honestly, Alya and Nino should’ve had their miraculous swapped (most characters actually don’t have a miraculous that suits them in terms of kwami, powers, or/and symbolism). Alya at the core is meant to be a supportive friend that is supposed to have her friends’ back, but also prefers to be on the front lines. Turtle would allow this, and teach her to be more aware of the danger she and her friends are in. It won’t essentially stop her reactive behavior, but she can learn to be more smart about it.
And with Nino, it was always weird to me how popular it was for him to get Turtle. And then it happened in canon and I’m just put off by the assignment. Nino at the core isn’t a character that wants to be on the front lines, but Turtle is a miraculous that is meant to be on the front lines as a protector. Nino is a support role, but not in that sense. Fox would’ve been better as its more designed to help from the shadows. It won’t be as aesthetically pleasing still as Nino is so color coded for Peafowl, but would fit better as it allows Nino to be a background support. It would also help him learn to be more observant and aware of others, and wanting to be a director, you need to learn to put on a good show that draws your audience in. Mirage can give him a chance to truly practice this. Mindful, Fox still isn’t my top pick for Nino (I think Fox would be more fitting with Marinette or Felix), Peafowl still is as that’s what he is coded for, and even canon wise, it would be a more fitting miraculous for him than Turtle. But of what Fu has, Fox would’ve been the better pick for Nino.
And speaking of Nino, it’s revealed from a tweet from Thomas that Nino had lost an older brother and that his hat belonged to him. That actually gives Nino an emotional tie in to the plot as, while he wants his brother back, he wouldn’t go to the extent that Gabriel is.
Classmate wise, there’s potential too.
Origins shows that everyone was afraid of Ivan and assumed the worst of him, he could’ve had an arc of changing those views. Go from being feared to being seen as a hero to trust. A source of protection and security.
Juleka wants to shine out more. But she struggles in that spotlight and to even be heard. She could have an arc about being heard, and building her confidence.
Rose is a girl ruled by her heart and is full of love and trust for others. It could be interesting seeing her have a miraculous and struggling with the factor that fighting is involved, but she herself is a pacifist (at least I get that impression). And that can be an interesting thing to explore, as she’s not wrong, but sometimes fighting is the only way. She can also learn to be more conscious that there are those who will take advantage of her and will have active malicious intents to her and others.
Kim actually states that he wants to be a hero. Not only could him as a hero be fun, it could help him mature as a character and be more serious, as akumas demand focus and be treated as serious. Copycat shows that he can be an observant character, I’d be intrigue to see ML’s residential himbo be surprisingly observant and offer up advise to his friends.
And of alternative love interests...
Well, this is more Kagami than Luka, at least in terms of character potential and an arc to see. Though, as of now, if all the predictions are correct SPOILER ALERT, Lies will break up Adrien and Kagami, to me its going to make them another Chloe. More specifically, why did we spend two seasons building up and teasing these alternative love interests only to immediately break them up at the start of s4.
To me, that sets them up as pointless inclusions who ultimately didn’t bring anything to the narrative.
Either way, this is about character potentials and I see more potential to explore with Kagami than Luka, and that’s more on the writers and how they handle Luka as most Luka episodes wound up more about Adrien than him. So he is largely a character I just don’t know what to do with.
Kagami though, she’s an aggressive character that could learn to cool it, she wants to branch out/rebel from her mother, she wants to make friends but struggles with it, and can learn to be more conscious of others and step up into the hero role, of helping others.
Honestly, working solely off Riptose, she would’ve been a better rival for Adrien than Marinette. Not just as a love rival, which he truly has yet to have, but a rival in general. While she wants to branch out from her mother’s influence, fencing is still her passion and her goal, something Adrien himself lacks. Outside being romantically involved with LB, he has no passion or goal for himself. Kagami can challenge this, why is he here when he doesn’t truly care about fencing?
And as a romantic rival, she’s one of the few who doesn’t need a miraculous to join fights, she can vigilante to assist LB and pay her back for her helping in cleansing her, but could end showing that she’s a better partner to LB as she takes things more seriously and is more battle smart in fights. Which ultimately would force Adrien to step up his game, take things more seriously, and wise up for throwing a tantrum will only take you so far. Especially when there’s a 3rd party member that’s judging you for your immaturity and shows LB she doesn’t have to bow to his whims just because he’s having a tantrum.
...You know, maybe Luka then would’ve been better as Marinette’s rival. Not a love rival, Marinette has enough between Chloe, Lila, and Adrien’s fanclub. But more of a rival for Ladybug. Though, it won’t so much be an arc for Luka himself but one for Marinette. If Kagami and Luka are supposed to help Adrien and Marinette grow, then this at least keeps in that theme.
With the show taking a turn that Marinette is feeling overwhelmed and stressed with her role as a hero and now Guardian, and slightly playing off Origins and her doubts of whether she’s a good hero; Luka could’ve been an interesting character for her to come across and consider. Ultimately, he is set up to be a very solid hero: he is calm, mature, shown to be a planner, and considerate and aware of others. Only thing he has against him is that he’s a removed character and is mostly seen sitting on that boat.
Romance between them I’d leave as optional, but it could be intriguing to see Marinette considering the possibility of retiring as Ladybug and passing it on to Luka so she can fully embrace her Guardian duties and not be so overwhelmed. And in general, it is a big wonder, who would take over as the Ladybug if Marinette has to leave and not come back, or that she can’t balance between being a hero and being the Guardian (and in truth, Tikki is no longer a good kwami for Marinette to have as she’s developing an Atlas complex through her and she hasn’t been helpful as a guide and adviser in a long time).
Now the show writers would butcher this, but it could’ve been interesting to see. Maybe Luka could’ve been a means to help her learn to manage things better if she has to stay LB and Guardian.
But yeah, it’s a shame that this show won’t delve past the LS which has long since gotten stale and quite toxic. There’s a lot of potential, but they won’t touch it. Won’t care to.

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Wish list
This is a long one so buckle up:
Let Klaus and Allison take centre-stage this season in leading the plot. Both are incredible characters and deserve the chance to shine. And I can think of several reasons why they deserve the chance to take centre-stage: out of the whole Academy their powers are some of the most fascinating and in Klaus’ case he has so many that haven’t been revealed yet. They’ve both suffered and lost a lot as well, particularly in season 2 and their hardships tend to get ignored by others. Their relationship together is already really interesting and supportive and they would be an awesome team up. There’s more but I’ll be here forever if I tried to list them.
No Apocalypse. The world ending in eight days was a great plot driver in season 1 and again in season 2 with the reveal that the end of the world actually followed the Umbrella’s back in time. But if the same thing gets repeated over and over then I’m worried that the show will lose it’s edge as a result. In order for the characters to develop new crisis's need to take its place.
Let Five have a rest. Even if it’s just for an episode or two so he can get a solid eight hours sleep if nothing else. For the last two seasons Five has been running around non-stop trying to stop the end of the world and save his family. Without that Five can grow as a person and get a literal break that he really hasn’t gotten in 45 years.
Oh course that doesn’t mean I want Five out of the drama entirely and I do expect to see Reginald and Five scenes in season 3. Five is the only one of his original children that the bastard seemed to tolerate and he did seem to have some form of twisted respect for Five as well. And I wouldn’t put it past the monocle monster to have some twisted plans in store for the eldest member of the Umbrella Academy. He’s had fifty years to plan for the Umbrella’s return after all.
The Sparrows. I just saw the line up of the Sparrows for season three and I am honestly so interested. I can’t wait to see what their powers are like and I already have some ideas. They have so much potential and hopefully they’ll be done well. And so far they seem to be written as the Umbrella’s foils. Marcus is a natural leader who loves his family, while Luther forces himself into the role and alienated his family as a result. Both Ben and Diego long to be the leader but while Diego is more emotional, Ben’s more strategic. Five is driven by his love and desire to protect his family, while Sloane feels held back by hers. Vanya was treated as an outcast and betrayed her siblings trust while Christopher, a literal Cube, is said to be loyal and is treated as a loved family member
That being said though, I don’t want the Sparrows to be the main focus this season or have the attention split between them and the Umbrella’s. Because while I do want to see the Sparrows and their family dynamic and how they interact with the Umbrella’s, I would prefer to see how the Umbrella Hargreeves’ cope with their existent and how this impacts them and how they move forward with this. Or a team up between Sparrows and Umbrella’s would be fine. Or multiple team ups, I’m not picky.
There is a really good fan theory out there about Klaus and Five being twins and while I know that in the comics it’s Luther and Five, the fan theory in season 3 would be so much better in my opinion. And in all honesty it makes so much more sense. Physically they are strikingly similar, especially as children. Their powers both concentrate in their hands and emit a blue glow when they use them. Their powers themselves are literally time and death, which are linked and they have additive personalities, which can be inherited between family members. And I can’t help but feel that this moment:
lends a new level to their relationship then what we see with them as adults. Look at how alike they are! And that fond smile that Five is giving Klaus? Making them twins opens up a wide range of possibilities for Klaus and Five both character and plot wise.
Give Luther a proper love interest. And I can’t believe that this even has to be said but his sister does not count! Literally all of siblings have have romantic interests, all of them so important in the Umbrella’s life in some way or another. It would be nice too to see Luther form a healthy romantic connection for the first time in his life.
While I’m on the subject of Luther and healthy relationships, it also brings me back to the Sparrows and how their number one Marcus seems to be Luther’s foil. And it would be interesting for the show to explore just how seeing the Sparrows and someone so similar to Luther might just affect him. He did spend thirty years of his life after all being Reginald’s little solider and believing that his position as Number One made him the family leader only to find out it was all for nothing. Only Marcus seems to be respected in his position as leader and loves his family dearly, while Luther was mocked and seems to have driven all of his siblings bar Allison away from him because of it. This has incredible potential for Luther’s character arc this season especially if it makes him acknowledge his behaviour to his siblings as they were growing up; particularly to Klaus and Vanya who probably got the worst of it. Allison after all was his closest companion, Diego was his rival (more or less), Ben seemingly got on with everyone and Five would have bitten Luther’s head off if he tried anything. But Reginald’s disappointments Klaus and Vanya? Luther, wanting to impress their dad and follow his orders probably didn’t treat them the best. And I want Luther to admit that and apologise and make the next step in becoming a better person and brother. He’s made incredible progress in season 2, but I don’t want his past treatment of his siblings to be swept under the rug. It needs to be acknowledged and Luther needs to admit it was wrong so he can grow.
Can we get Diego’s season one hair back too? I wondered just how it got that long considering that he was only in the sixties for around three months. Klaus makes sense as he was in the sixties for years. Plenty of time for him to grow it out, not really for Diego. But I really prefer his season one hair so can it make a comeback please?
What I want to see for Vanya this season is for her to realize that she doesn’t need powers to be special. I kinda noticed that she seems to have defined her worth on her powers and that’s not healthy. So a potential scenario: Reginald seems to have made the power-suppressing drug himself, so he may still have it in season 3. Imagine Vanya getting a dose of it that knocks her powers out for a good chunk of time and in the meantime some of her siblings are in danger (I’m picturing Luther and Diego here the himbos) and she ends up saving them. Not with her powers but because of her intelligence and other skills that she has and she realizes that she doesn’t need her powers to be special or to save the day. A logical step in character growth.
Getting some closure on season 2 character like Sissy, Ray, Grace, the Cult (which I really didn’t like) and the Swede and what happened to them once the Umbrella’s left the sixties. And maybe finding out what happened to season one’s characters since the Umbrella’s didn’t exist in this timeline: Agnes, Patch, Leonard, Pogo, Claire.
For Klaus and Umbrella Ben to talk about their issues and make up. I know that our Ben is now up there with the little girl in the sky but that has not stopped Klaus from visiting heaven before. And I think that if Klaus and Ben do not get at least one final conversation to talk through their issues next season then I will sue. They both did crappy things to each other in season two but they both love each other dearly and they deserve the chance to get the closure they both need. I think that Klaus will definitely need it in order to move on completely.
I know I said no Apocalypse but I’m still going to be expecting some major crisis to happen during the last few episodes. An alien invasion or Sparrows trying to kill the Umbrella's maybe? But no matter what the problem is, I really want Klaus to get his moment to shine by being the one to save the day. Reginald said himself that Klaus has untapped potential and we know thanks to the comics what other powers he has. And thanks to Ben’s antics at the family dinner the old bastard has probably written him off as useless and not a threat when making plans to deal with the Umbrella’s. Which means nobody is going to be looking at Klaus or considering him a potential threat to their plans, leaving Klaus relatively safe to start exploring and enhancing his powers. He was supposed to be the one to have done it in season one with the moon and his abilities were brushed to the side completely in season two or used for Ben’s benefit so I think he’s long overdue his moment to shine. And maybe then will the rest of his siblings stop seeing Klaus as a joke.
Lila. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her, her story felt unfinished and she does have a briefcase. She could pop at any moment in the story. She has so much potential and I did love her actress. Imagine her and Five forcing to team up or something? Or maybe her and Allison?
Another character I’d like to see return is Hazel. He’s someone who really grew on me. And there is a chance that he could return and maybe team up with the Umbrella’s this season. Potential scenarios: Five on the hunt for allies to help him restore the timeline hunts down Hazel who in this timeline is working with the Commission and because the Umbrellas don’t exist hasn’t met Agnes yet. Maybe something happened to her because of the Sparrows?
Finally Dave. I’m a huge Dave fan but I really don’t want him to show up in season three. Or if he does then for the smallest amount of time possible just to give Klaus some ‘closure’. Time travel is in the Umbrella Academy universe after all and it’s possible that by Klaus warning Dave about his faith and causing him to enlist earlier and in a different branch as a result he’s saved Dave and opened up the possibility of seeing Commission!Dave later. Which is the perfect storyline for season 4. Season three is only 10 episodes long and there’ll be a lot going on already so shoving Dave into what will already be a pretty packed season won’t give Dave the attention he deserves and will take away from the other focus. Not only that but Klaus’ motivation for the last two seasons is doing something for either Dave or Ben. I want to see Klaus train his powers either for himself or to help someone else. Also, Dave deserves the chance to grow as a character as well and making him a part of season 3 would take away from the main focus of the Umbrella’s and Sparrows. Making him a main focus in season four instead if we get one will give a great opportunity story-wise to develop both him and Klaus as individuals and as a couple.

hi eris! can't say i have much love for aou or civil war but i'm glad they make you happy. barbie is a really good answer, honestly it feels so perfect that i can't believe they haven't already done something like that lol. also little mermaid!!!! that would be so fun. also thank u for reminding me of the dreamworks holiday specials, i should say that reminds me that one of my favorite pieces of holiday media is gift of the night fury. also since you brought it up: i should start mining for info to make ur present at the end of the month, so if u have any starstruck thoughts that you haven't had a chance to share please share them below (or any other disney channel media!!! neither of us should be limiting ourselves here) also side note: since i've now been paying close attention to your blog, i've noticed you talking about sooo many shared interests but i can't comment because i don't want to give myself away :( maybe on christmas lol
oh sorry i misspoke, civil war is one of my least favorite movies of all time i just think civil war is good tony stark characterization and aou is good steve rogers and characterization but everything else makes me lose faith in cinematic storytelling 💔
i don’t know why but i think about those dreamworks shorts all the time 😭 they’re so cute and dumb and like a greta way to blend media
oof such a loaded question i always have too many thoughts on, well, everything but especially starstruck i guess because it’d take too long otherwise i’ll tell you some powerpoint night ideas i’ve had but have too much ✨ social anxiety ✨ to follow through on:
All The Little Details In Starstruck That Drive Me Hashtag Insane: i know i’ve said this before but i’m such a details person that i think no matter how small those extra details in movies and tv shows are they really make the whole thing better and starstruck has so many! my favorite being the photographer at the beach that took photos of crying jessica leaving the phone booth and christopher looking at her but like he pauses and you realize while he may have told people about it he never sold the pictures! the first pictures of jessica released to the public is like a week later and it’s of her leaving her grandmother’s so it’s just!! idk the little things and i really could talk about them all night (i also want to one day follow through on my tiktok threat)
Have You Ever Seen Taylor Swift and Christopher Wilde in the Same Place at Once?: i don’t know who justin bieber is christopher wilde/ starstruck is actually based solely around the toxic media and building hype surrounding taylor swift, especially the unrealistic annoying romance aspect
Troy Bolton: Disney Channel’s Most Well Developed Character of All Time (also a brief examination of songs portraying his inner most thoughts which is why they’re ‘always’ singing): okay basically the title but yeah i have so many thoughts on him as a character and the way music is used throughout the story not as a storytelling method (like many musicals) but more as a coping or thought process method like in crazy ex-girlfriend
Bunk’d But It’s Actually Good: while i think bunkd is a grade a dumpster fire i do have ideas to make it actually funny (this is just a throw away one solely for the memes)
Why I Should Legally Be Allowed to Punch Christopher Wilde in the Face: it’s one slide and it’s just a screen cap of the ‘I don’t know anyone named jessica olson’ interview
Is Descendants a Good Commentary or Am I Just Bisexual: the answer is both but also neither
and these are just names i’ve come up with:
“Who Would I Legally Be Obligated to Cyberbully if Starstruck 2 Was Released”, “Starstruck Is The Worst Movie I’ve Ever Seen”, “The Anti-Himbos of Disney Channel”, “Would Alex Russo Survive In Modern Media: A Commentary on Flawed Characters”, “Why Ben from Descendants is the Love of my Life”, ect
also if it makes you feel better i have no time to critically think about who has me so i would love to talk about things we have in common 👀 (i don’t have a lot of opportunities to actually DISCUSS the things i like so i’d probably be too excited to over analyze it)
(p.s. sorry for the essay alakalsjksjsjdjd)
#gcwca secret santa#again sorry for the late response!#after finals are over next week i promise i’ll be better just crazy busy#and want to give you a well thought out answer#ask: gcwca secret santa

Can you please make some dating headcanons for the Star Tugs, please? (You can do the Z-Stacks later if you want to)
*screaming* IM BACK
I've been working on this for like 2 months, it sat in my drafts box for about a month and a half with just TenCents' and then Big mac was added like a month ago LMAO
Why not make it an even longer post?👀
Star Tugs, Z-Stacks character relationship headcanons
Sorry about the massive post ya'll hope you enjoy
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
Star Tugs
Tencents
General
Very loving throughout the whe relationship but can be very hardheaded/stubborn.
Will bring you flowers when ever he can or leaves notes on your door/office.
Loves to cuddle and watch movies at night.
Favorite dates are sitting at the end of the doc and talking with you.
Beginning of relationship
Thought that you would never like him or want to date him so be kind of acted cruel when feelings arose.
And then something happened
You were pushed off one of the tugs once and without thinking TenCents dove into the frigid water after you and pulled you out.
He held you in his arms until medical personnel could show up and he broke down when you left in an ambulance.
He showed up to the hospital the next day with flowers and when he saw the tubes and wires he cried
Throughout your stay he cringed a little as tubes and such were taken out.
He stayed by your side and held your hand until you woke up and kissed you the minute he could.
He told you how much he loved you and how he felt so bad for being such an ass and he ended up spending the night curled up in your hospital bed with you.
Oj and Hercules still have the photos
Big Mac
General
Veey sweet man
Loves to tease you though so be prepared.
Will give you kisses on the cheek as a way to show love or as a goodbye if he's in a rush.
Kind of protective, specifically when it comes to the Z stacks.
Beginning of relationship
You never expected him to have feelings for you. Not because he does what TenCents does, but because he shows his love in ways that you really have to look for.
You work with him? He'll help you and work with you whenever he can.
You live with the fleet? Will try and help you with meals or cleaning or just keep you company.
He vents to you a lot and thats another way you can tell you've learned his trust.
When he asks you out it's more or less a "would you like to see a movie together?" Or something along the lines of that.
Your first "date" was very sweet and he did did his best to spoil you and make you feel comfortable.
The first time he said i love you, you bith looked at eachother stunned and then smiled
10/10 amazing man.
Otis Jones (O.J)
General
Very sweet and traditional lover.
Will compliment everything, your eyes, your smile, your laugh, you hands, anything he can compliment he will atleast twice.
Is traditional in the sense that you aren't officially dating until he takes you out a few times
Holds your hands and give you kisses on your knuckles whenever
He also does this little thing that if your hands are scuffed or dried he'll put lotion on them for you.
Beginning of relationship
Very upfront with his feelings as he knows that keeping them hidden can only hurt your relationship with eachother.
Very politely asks you while making dinner or cleaning the dishes with you.
Doesn't want to tell anyone until your officially together and comfortable with it.
As i said before he wants to take you out and test the waters a few times to see how you feel about dating.
Brings you daisies and always holds your hand when showing you something.
Top Hat
General
Shows his love through buying gifts and surprisingly, dancing!
Is like Otis in the sense that he wants to take you out a few times before being official.
Little side note, your first kiss was on the stern of his boat as the sun went down to the song You Send Me by Sam Cooke during a party.
Beginning of Relationship
Grampus and Billy were the first to find out and Tophat was slightly pissed.
His love language is very much physical touch and buying gifts so things like slow dancing, soft touches, and new jewelry.
Kind of rubs that whole thing in Hercules' face
Doesn't want kids but very much loves yours if you have them or your nieces and nephews.
If you have siblings he will definitely have a drink with them and have long conversations with them so long as they are smart and can be sarcastic.
You have a promise ring with it, it's a thing for if he ever has to go out to sea you know he's with you.
Plans on marrying you as you are the only person he's been very attached to.
Warrior
General
Very much a himbo but he loves you so much.
Fell very hard very very quick and Big Mac kimd of teased him for it but definitely cheered him on.
Very very in love with you and was the first to say I love you.
Beginning of relationship
Isn't good at dancing or with his words so he told you he loved you by writing it out in a letter.
Walks down the docks while you take about your day and how you're feeling are his favorite "dates".
Loves to hear you laugh so very much, it never fails to make him smile.
Will give you kisses randomly and that's how the rest of the fleet found out.
He had a job with SunShine and as a way to say good bye he ran up to you, grabbed you, and kissed you and ran.
50/10 very loving and genuine man.
Hercules (my most developed character LMAO)
General
O h t h i s m a n i s a f l i r t .
Lives to make you flush.
Gave you a necklace with a photo of him and TenCents in it (TC is basically his son).
Gave you little hints that he was smitten with you right off the bat.
Wasn't afraid to ask you to dinner but you weren't official as he wanted to test the water bc past relationships went to hell.
Everyone knew he had actual feelings for you, he was sweeter on you and seemed to trust you more, and smile at you more than the others and is always more goofy around you.
Beginning of relationship
Took you to a bar to go dancing and the song Sh-Boom - Life Could Be A Dream came on and when he dipped you at the end of the song he kissed you and held you close as the next song came on, foreheads pressed together.
Definitely sleeps with you in his arms every night and his two cats sleep with you. (TenCents and Sunshine have konked out with guys a few times.
Dates where you lay out a blanket in a field and read or look at the stars are very common (he does this thing when if you're on your stomach reading he'll lay his head on your thighs or ass)
Again, lives to make you blush and he'll do basically anything to make you turn as red as TenCents' Scarf.
Loves to dance and sing.
Dusk is sometimes spent dancing on his boat.
Loves to dance to hound dog with you
Sunshine
General
Relatively mature lover.
Very gentle and sweet on you and loves to make you laugh and smile.
Could be covered in grease or dust after work and would still bring you flowers or a sea shell he found if he got the chance.
"Oh boy, here comes lover boy Sunshine!" -tophat
Big mac definitely soothed him into telling you about his feelings.
Beginning of relationship
Very nervous to tell you and stuttered a little when talking to you.
Grabbed your hand by accident one day and thats when you turned to him and told him you had feelings for him.
Poor man almost passed put and fell into the water out of pire relief.
Nights spent watching movies or sitting on the beach talking about dumb things together are his favorite ways to spend time with you.
Z-stacks
Zorran
General
Oh god you never thought he had feelings for you.
He was a complete asshole and seemed to live pissing you off.
So when he asked you out you were stunned and almost turned him down, but decided you would give it a shot.
Very difficult man, but he was a lot softer on you after a little while.
Beginning of relationship
This relationship definitely started by you snapping at him over something hime dod and him leaning down to your face and saying something like "well aren't you a cutie"
You just about smacked him and then it settled in that he was basically flirting with you.
First date consisted of a walk down the streets of San Francisco (yes this au is in SF CA bite me.)
He took you into a shop and pointed out a cat stuffie that you said looked like one you had when you were little and he bought it for you with a red bow on it a few days later.
His love language is definitely gifts.
Zebedee (my love)
General
Absolutely lover man
Basically the Hercules of the Z-stacks just a little harder to read.
Has a son. His name is Zip. You are a parent now.
Zebedee was brought up in a weird house hold so he works very hard to make sure you are comfortable and he doesnt make the relationship miserable.
Beginning of relationship
Was quite open about the whole thing and surprisingly practically cussed out Zorran when he started with his shit.
Very much a sweetheart and would do anything with you if he could.
Zak
General
Dickwad. Doesn't know how to show his love for you, but it's there.
Shows his love by being protective and always being aroune basically.
Very rarely actually smiles but when he does cherish the fucking moment.
Beginning of relationship
"Sir wtf everyone thinks you hate them" kind of vibe.
Thought he just wanted to get to know you but now you're a week into the relationship and holy fuck i want to get married.
Wants to hold your hand most of the time and just hear your voice.
Zug
General
Little bit of an asshole but tries his best
Buys you little things like journals if you like to write or seeds if you have a garden.
Wears ties and always has you pick them out and if you aren't around he wears the one with your favorite flowers or colors on it.
Beginning of relationship
Teases you and acts like a big man when you first get together but then he realizes how much he loves you and becomes a big softy.
Loves to cuddle randomly and Zorran is a little piss baby about it
Loves everything about you, especially your eyes and he always makes it known.
Zip
General
Kind of a ditz but you have to love him for it.
He was a stuttering mess when he told you he had caught feelings and held out a single sunflower for you to take.
Loves to lay his hedon your lap as you play with his hair and talk or watch a movie.
Likes to write stories, a lot of them involve you, and he reads them to you! He's a very good writer and so many of his characters are really well developed and beautifully designed.
He has a little brother named Zacary (Xacary?) and his brother often helps Zip set dates and such up
Beginning of relationship
I have a little headcanon that Zip might have partial autism but he has ADHD and he was abused as a kid so the relationship is a little rough for him at first.
Adjusting to the whole thing of hey they love me, i love them, i can trust them.
But as he warms up he helps more, and dances with you more, and begins to really thrive in the relationship.
Is definitely in love with you even if he forgets to tell you some days.
He's trying his hardest, give him a little time
Zorran definitely had feelings for you qnd was pissy when you fell for Zip and Zip fell for you

Game 26: Yakuza Like A Dragon Aside from the last 25% of this game, Yakuza Like A Dragon is amazing. Through my time playing the 7th entry in the Yakuza series I was always excited to see what new trouble or development that Ichiban and his gang were dealing with and how he brought everyone together. This game is truly an amazing soft reboot of the series, and while there are plenty of references to the original games, this really feels like a step forward in the right direction. Seriously! The majority of Yakuza 7 is wonderful, but that last part of the game can feel a bit like a drag with how everything is set up. Not so much the finale, but how you get to it. Largely the difficulty spike have to do with leveling up and dealing with Kasuga dies game over mechanic. While I certainly think the majority of this game is easier for newer RPG players; the fact we have to deal with such blunt boss design is not something every RPG player comes across. A lot of RPGs let their main character die in battle because it makes for a much more interesting game dynamic. Having to worry about Kasuga dying certainly isn't a big problem for the majority of the game, but for roughly 3 boss fights, it is. Yakuza 7 is still a stellar game though, and one that makes great use of RPG elements, narrative, characters, and Yakuza staples. Honestly it was a bit worrying when I heard that Yakuza 7 was going to be a RPG, but gosh does this work so well for the series. Not only does it allow itself to open up more, but also gives more characters a chance to shine! Honestly having Ichiban have a whole crew was a great change of pace, and one that helps make the story better due to higher emotional ties. The cast for Yakuza 7 isn't only more diverse, but interesting to boot. I would have seriously loved to see more substories staring the cast, but Ichiban is still plenty entertaining. Ichiban Kasuga really is the meat to this whole game. While I do miss Kiryu; Ichiban fits into his own niche of himbo that feels similar, but drastically different in his own way. Ichiban isn't exactly the smartest person in the world, but his emotional intelligent and ability to inspire others is chad worthy. On top of that, the game highlights the fact that Ichiban grew up in a soap land, and sex workers where a big part of his life. So much so that this game generally shows sex workers as human beings that may not be able to do more than just that. While it certainly isn't the full message we want, Yakuza continues to prove just how progressive it is. Overall Yakuza Like A Dragon is a new start to an already wonderful franchise, and with the way they pivoted into RPG battles and mechanics is amazing. If this was just another brawler, I don't think this game would have me in the emotions nearly as much as it did, and because of how well crafted the story and character interactions were nearly all the emotional beats hit exactly how they were suppose to. Honestly if you ever wanted to get into the series, this is a wonderful place to start, and one that truly shows risks can pay off in ways you never expect.
