you know, one of the things I think we need to bring back about older (like 60s and 70s) TV shows and movies is people having Faces that aren't all exactly a clone of the hollywood standard. and letting makeup artists make them look like people instead of barbie dolls. and letting them have skin textures and moles and crooked teeth and asymmetrical faces and not making them look like plastic models. and doing this unapologetically until people stop thinking it looks "weird" or "wrong" for actors to have faces that aren't perfect symmetrical over-made-up doll faces

the newest episode of bsd inspired me to re-read those chapters of the manga, because i wanted to see my guy (sigma). i’ve made it a point to focus on characters eyes whenever i’m re-reading the manga, ever since i learned about how hurukawa draws eyes:

and one of my favorite nerd activities is re-reading with hindsight to see what the author was planning and such. long story short, sigma’s eyes when he tells teruko that her evading all his stuff what part of his plan punched me in the gut.

his eyes are drawn to appear as the brightest things in the panel. sigma is about to commit great acts of violence and his eyes are glowing because he his inherently good, he is fighting with all he has, for his only home. doing whatever you can to protect what you love is a perfectly sane and good act.

to anyone who needs to hear this: you’re not a bad person for your past support.

I, personally, felt a little gross, for lack of a better word, when thinking about how I was laughing and crying over his characters and his story while he was doing that to someone behind the scenes. But as my good friend @brainrot138am told me: I didn’t know he was like this. It’s not my - or your - fault, and it’s not your guilt to hold, because you simply didn’t know and you didn’t do it.

What’s important now is not supporting him now that you do know. Don’t give him money, don’t defend him, don’t go to his concerts or show up to any livestreams or videos. And certainly don’t make excuses for him, because this is a grown ass man who has clearly NOT changed.

Give all the support and love to Shubble, and take all the time you need to process and process how you need. Your feelings are valid <3

Hmmm just gonna spit this headcanon out in text post form since A. I don't think I could exposit it well enough in image form and B. It's not actually textually/thematically substantiated and I don't like actually staking my stuff on just vibes alone*

But anyway. I'd say it's pretty evident that all the islanders forgot their names, right? King obviously. Because why the hell else would he do that, but also Siffrin No Middle Names No Last Name.

They're 'pretty sure' they've 'always' been 'Just Siffrin' 'as long as they can remember'. It's a pretty cruel twist of the knife to say that they don't even get to keep their birth name as a memento, which is why I'm saying as such.

My utterly unsubstantiated claim is I think it'd be cute to say that Sisyphus *is* the name Siffrin initially picked, assuming the myth of King Sisyphus is recontextualised as idk, just a play or something in the setting. But I like the idea of Siffrin going 'oh shit 🫵 he's just like me fr' at a tortured fictional character long before the irony kicks in.

As for how Sisyphus -> Siffrin. I think that chronic mumbler and emotional doormat Sif just did not correct people who misheard the name during their time travelling, and went through enough places with incompatible phonologies (pronounceable sounds in the language) without ever really writing it down that it just got kinda. Changed until it was unrecognisable, and Siffrin just went with it until the earlier pronunciations slipped out of their swiss-cheese brain. And they just kinda don't remember any of that.

Also, something something the horrid realisation that Siffrin also named themselves after a King. Just not as blatantly.

*(though I think there's something here about Siffrin, a guy from a belief system that seems to thoroughly disincentivise autonomy and self-motivated choice continuously having their hand forced to make changes/choices they don't want but have no choice but to... It's not solid enough to really back this up tbh, but it informs it.)
