Some notes on Power!Zelda ;;

Unlike botw/totk Zelda, she lost her mother before her third birthday and has no clear memories of her, only a tapestry portrait of her parents from their early marriage to even know what she looked like.

She was told from a young age that she would be the bearer of Wisdom, having inherited it from her mother, who carried it until a year or so before Zelda was born.

She took her studies and training very seriously, especially under the watchful, overbearing eye of her father, whose grief at losing his wife manifested in pushing Zelda to be the perfect heir to Hylia's magic.

Because of her father's demands and her isolation in her study, Zelda had very few friends growing up - her closest friend is her advisor, Impa. She loves Impa dearly and knows Impa loves her equally.

As she approached her seventeenth birthday, Zelda became more and more disheartened that her power hadn't yet come to fruition; Wisdom would not awake in her. With her father bearing down on her, speaking harshly about a great evil he'd been told was on the horizon, she became more desperate to awaken the Triforce within her.

And then her seventeenth birthday came to pass - still nothing. Zelda spent her entire birthday up at the Spring of Wisdom, begging, crying, pleading with the goddess statue to grant her the magic. Yet it still never came. Half-frozen as she went back down the mountain, she went to stay in Kakariko Village for the night with her dear friend.

When she returned to the castle a few days later, her father summoned her to the throne room, where he told her of his disappointment - Wisdom had been recognized within another. He tore her down, spoke of her wasted potential and her failure.

Their relationship would never recover - Rhoam spoke little to her, acknowledged her less. Zelda, heartbroken and feeling so alone, took to the library, spending each day studying histories and blue prints, discovering castle defenses and learning about mechanical creatures called Guardians.

Her attempt to mend things with her father, declaring the Guardians as a defense for the great evil Rhoam spoke of, ended in a disastrous failure - Rhoam lost his temper at her, she lost her temper back, and in heated argument, the Triforce of Power woke in Zelda and the first wave of that Power struck Rhoam, killing him instantly.

Anger stirred as she realized what she'd woken - a voice called to her from deep within. It told her who was the blame for her failure, who bore Wisdom, and said that her only chance to gain it would be to kill the bearer and taken it from him.

One of the fun things about playing this version of Zelda is that she herself is not evil ; she simply has no control of the Triforce of Power and the influence of Demise, the demon's voice she hears, frequently takes over in moments of weakness. It's that influence and control of the corruption in Power that causes the most damage and it's not Zelda's consciousness at these times. She is more of a puppet when this influence takes over.

I think depictions of Anya being cruel to Curly or drawing out his suffering are artful and chilling but completely miss the point of the story and her character.

I'm not saying she doesn't deserve to have that "I told you so" moment with him but not in something callous or cold. Even if that is how it happened, she'd immediately feel guilty cause at that point she's not tormenting her tormenter or even the person truly at fault. She's doing something cathartic, similar to how Jimmy likely hits Curly to release rage he can't against the rest of the crew. She'd see herself as no different when she'd come back from the moment and see Curly cowering at her. She wants someone to take responsibility but how does being cruel to the defenseless help? Why would she want the power Jimmy has over her over Curly?

The idea of her extending someone else's pain is just so against the struggles she already faces and how she can't even bring herself to cause someone pain even to help them. Her very desire is to release herself from her own suffering and I doubt she'd even fine some sort of guilty release in being cruel to another.

I’ll never forget when I was arguing with a person in favor of total prison abolition and I asked them “what about violent offenders?” And they said “Well, in a world where prisons have been abolished, we’ll have leveled the playing field and everyone will have their basic needs met, and crime won’t be as much of an issue.” And then I was like “okay. But…no. Because rich people also rape and murder, so it isn’t just a poor person thing. So what will we do about that?” And I don’t think they answered me after that. I’m ashamed to say I continued to think that the problem was that I simply didn’t understand prison abolitionists enough and that their point was right in front of me, and it would click once I finally let myself understand it. It took me a long time to realize that if something is going to make sense, it needs to make sense. If you want to turn theory into Praxis (I’m using that word right don’t correct me I’ll vomit) everyone needs to be on board, which mean it all needs to click and it needs to click fast and fucking clear. You need to turn a complex idea into something both digestible and flexible enough to be expanded upon. Every time I ask a prison abolitionist what they actually intend to do about violent crime, I get directed to a summer reading list and a BreadTuber. It’s like a sleight-of-hand trick. Where’s the answer to my question. There it is. No wait, there it is. It’s under this cup. No it isn’t. “There’s theory that can explain this better than I can.” As if most theory isn’t just a collection of essays meant to be absorbed and discussed by academics, not the average skeptic. “Read this book.” And the book won’t even answer the question. The book tells you to go ask someone else. “Oh, watch this so-and-so, she totally explains it better than me.” Why can’t you explain it at all? Why did you even bring it up if you were going to point me to someone else to give me the basics that you should probably already know? Maybe I’m just one of those crazy people who thinks that some people need to be kept away from the public for everyone’s good. Maybe that just makes me insane. Maybe not believing that pervasive systemic misogyny could be solved with a UBI and a prayer circle makes me a bad guy. But it’s not like women’s safety is a priority anyway. It’s not like there is an objective claim to be made that re-releasing violent offenders or simply not locking them up is deadly.

just came off my shift as an election judge and I honestly think we should make people do this. I support abolishing the draft, and I even think that jury duty can get complicated, but everyone in the country should be forced to learn about election procedure, then have to sit around for 14 hours and practice being customer service for democracy. I think that would fix us.

thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.

what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).

in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.

best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.

I also find it funny that fandom will only accept Lyanna being her non-conforming, wild self in the context of saying that Arya isn't meant to be pretty; Any other day we get back-to-back posts about how Lyanna is actually super traditionally feminine cause she sniffled at a song once, so she's actually more like Sansa. Instead of constantly speaking on Arya and Lyanna, how about you guys reflect on why your standards of beauty for women are attached to how well they perform feminity within the patriarchy?
